Spotlight on Stanley Crook Community Centre. This month we shine the spotlight on Stanley Crook Village Hall. Kelly Mason is one of the newest members of the Village Hall Committee. So Kelly, you’ve recently became a member of the Village Hall Committee, what made you join and what are you hoping to achieve? Having grown up in the Village I’ve been involved in the Hall in some shape or form since I was little. My family have been members for years, with my grandparents being regular attendees at the weekly “Bingo” and “Carpet Bowls” back in the day.

In my younger years I was a regular attendee at the weekly Youth Club; as I think nearly every young person in the Village has been at some time in their life. The Hall has also been the Venue for a few of my birthday parties. Nowadays I help out at the weekly parent-led Baby and Toddler Playgroup session held in the Hall on a Monday morning. A recent leaflet through my door advertising the Annual General Meeting and calling for volunteers to join the Committee made me decide to go along to find out more about the Hall and what being a Committee member is all about. Sadly there is a lack of volunteers to help run some of the more popular activities such as Fun Club. We rely on volunteers to keep it running, and if it wasn’t for the hard work and dedication of the Committee (present and past) and those that help run some of the activities it would not be able to remain open. The Hall is a thriving community hub and it would be a shame given the Hall’s history 6

and the social activities it provides to see it have to shut its doors due to lack of support. What sort of activities are held at the Village Hall? The Hall is well used throughout the week for a number of different activities including: Baby and Toddler Playgroup (term time only), Fun Club (term time only), Zumba classes, Active for Life, Pilates, Social Club, and a Bingo session on a Friday evening. Fun Club is for children aged 5 to 11 years and is that popular there is often a waiting list to join. Fun Club is held on a Wednesday night and has an annual summer trip to South Shields, a Halloween party and Christmas disco. There’s also some fantastic Taekwondo classes ran by Shaun Kelly. Bishop Auckland Amateur Radio Club also meet at the Hall on a Thursday evening. They are the Hall’s longest running group and have been using the Hall for around 25 years. The Hall is also very popular for parties and celebrations. The size of the main Hall and the excellent kitchen facilities make it a excellent venue for hire. Tell us a little about the Village Hall and the facilities you have on offer. Stanley Crook Village Hall is a fantastic multifunctional venue, very different from the old “Green Hut” it replaced back in 1988. The original “Green Hut” as it is fondly remembered was demolished to make way for the current building. Funding from Banks Group, and support from the local community, saw the building of a purpose built venue to host social activities for residents from the Village and surrounding areas. Support for the Hall at that time was so popular that some residents were even involved in helping to clear the site and dig the foundations for the new building.

Don’t forget to quote Out & About Magazine when responding to adverts.

In 2014, the Hall was fully redecorated inside and out and new signage erected thanks to funding from our then local Councillor John Hart. The Hall has a fully equipped kitchen, with oven, microwave and tea making facilities. Hire of the Village Hall also includes full use

of the kitchen. There is free Wi-Fi available throughout the building and there is ample off road parking for visitors. How can people get involved with the Village Hall? With the Hall being tucked away round the back of High Road, some of the newer residents in the Village and surrounding areas may not be aware of it existence, let alone the range of activities held there and its availability for hire. Annual Membership is £3.00 per adult and the monies raised are used to help fund the cost of running the Hall. You do not have to be a member to attend the current activities or to hire the Hall. However, non-members are not allowed to vote at any Committee meetings or the Annual General Meeting.

The Committee are always looking for new ideas for activities and would encourage anyone who is keen to host a new activity or session to get in contact. From September 2017 there are two new activities planned for the Hall. A “Coffee, Cake and Chat” social session is planned for a Thursday afternoon. The session will be open to all ages, and for a small entrance fee you can enjoy a slice of cake and a refreshment. There are also plans to revive the weekly Film Club, providing films for both children and adults alike. In the past the Film Club has been a popular activity at the Hall, and it is hoped it will prove popular again when it starts back up in the Autumn. If you are interested in attending any of these activities please see our Facebook Page, or Newsletter for further information. The Committee are particularly keen to hear from anyone that may be interested in helping out at Fun Club. Although you do not require any formal Youth Work qualifications any volunteers will be required to complete a DBS check. Without the support and help of volunteers Fun Club will not be able to continue to run.

The Hall is available for hire for parties and social events at £8.00 per hour. You do not have to live in the Village, or be a Member to hire the Hall.

West Road Horror (Part 1) Story by Aaron Cowen

The Great Depression in the 1930s led to a lot of hardship globally. In the UK the North of England was particularly hard hit. No change there then! As a result Crook suffered a number of murders and suicides as a result of financial hardship. One such story a number of people have asked me for details about it. Joseph Edward Wailes, had it all. A nice house, Wife and children. He had servants to look after the house even. He was a well-known coal company agent who had an office at Newcastle-Upon-Tyne. His brother Sydney Wailes was managing director of Steels House Colliery, and it should be noted for interest that their father Thomas Wailes was manager in the 1880s - 90s at Abbots Close Colliery. Joseph had a keen interest in a range of sports and was a familiar figure at race meetings in the North East. He was described by his brother as a “Jolly, open-handed generous man, always living on top of the world” “his family came first in everything”. Perhaps is over generosity was his biggest downfall. His company was suffering financially and this seems to have come to him as a big shock and he was too proud to seek help and did not talk to anyone. It seems that the stress of losing everything was too much.

At 3.30am on Monday 8th January 1934 Margaret Ann White aged just 19 years old of 24 Helmington Row and a domestic servant in the employment of Mr Wailes house was awakened by a shot and a dog barking in the yard at the house of Mr Wailes. She then heard Mrs Wailes scream, “Douglas, Douglas, go down” Douglas was the 17 year old son of Joseph and Isobel Wailes. The maid then heard two or three more shots and locked her door in fear. Mr Wailes could be heard saying “Dry up, this has got nothing to do with you. I have done it”. Then the maid’s door handle slowly turned and it seemed like someone was trying to force their way in. She put on her sandshoes and jumped about 20 feet from the bedroom window to the gravel path below, but was not injured. She ran through a privet hedge to get help and awoke Mr Thomas Carr a nearby neighbour. Mr Carr went and knocked up Mr. Sydney Wailes Joseph’s brother to tell him something was wrong. Sydney looked across and saw the light was on in the dining room of his brother’s house. He called the police and got dressed. He then accompanied P.C. Lamb and P.C. Sowerby to the house. What did he find? Read next month’s article to find out more.

Aaron is a keen amateur historian and one of the admins of the Crook Town and District History Group Facebook group, he is also Chairman of the Empire Electric Palace group. 10

Cooking With Lee

Owner, Fondant & Apron Strings, Stanhope

Summer has finally arrived in the North East, well, as much of a summer as we are probably going to get. With summer comes the BBQ and that means sausages, burgers and lots of lovely side dishes. BBQ side dishes don’t have to be boring, they certainly don’t have to take a lot of effort to make or cost a lot of money. One of my family’s favourite dishes every year, and a dish that Fondant & Apron Strings, are asked for a lot when we are catering for events and parties, is Satay Noodles with Carrot When I’m making this dish, I prefer to make it with whole-wheat pasta. It adds a great nutty bite to the dish, but you can make it with Chinese noodles, white pasta or even leftovers from the nights before. Give it a go.

What you need Whole Wheat Pasta 1 pack/500g Smooth Peanut Butter - 1/2 Jar Carrot - 2 Large, Grated Sesame Oil 120ml Soya Sauce 4 Tablespoons Sesame Seeds 3 - 4 Tablespoons Spring Onions 1 bunch chopped small

How Its Done

Enjoy and have Cakelicious day X

1) Cook the pasta as per instructions and let cool completely. Once the pasta is cool, place into large bowl and using serving tongues or a large fork, separate the pasta so as to loosen it. Add the carrot and mix to combine. 2) Place the peanut butter, sesame oil and soya sauce into a bowl or jug. Mix well until thoroughly combined. 3) Pour the peanut mixture over the pasta and carrot and mix well so that all of the pasta has a glossy coating of the peanut mixture. 4) Sprinkle over the sesame seeds and the chopped spring onions. Serve and Enjoy.

Ritchie photographed our Blanchland wedding in April and we couldn’t recommend him enough. From consultation to ordering our album he was great to liaise with. We are over the moon with his service and our photos are wonderful. Ritchie offers a professional and friendly service at a very reasonable price. We always felt that Ritchie had everything in hand which is great when you have so much to think about. He arrived early on the day and put us all at ease through the nerves. Ritchie is really down to earth and easy to like. We were both a little self conscious being photographed and he made it a lot easier, remembering my ‘best side’ requests. The mixture of colour and black and white shots are lovely and we have just the right amount of natural and staged shots. All in all he captured our special day wonderfully and would definately recommend him. Ian and Victoria Dargue
