Moravian Murder part 2 Story by Aaron Cowen
In last month’s edition of Out and About we learned of how Margaret Robinson through a moment of brief insanity took the life of her 7 month old daughter. A few have pointed out the deliberate error of Nelson Street being shown in the photographs and not that of Moravian Street. Newspapers at the time name Moravian Street, but as can be seen in the 1891 census returns which were taken just a few weeks previous the family were

Superintendant Banks, Sergeant Smith and other Police Constables were present as was Mr George Summerfield of Darlington, Inspector to the S.P.C.C. or N.S.P.C.C. as it is today. in fact living in Nelson Street and not Moravian Street. So the photo is correct, the tabloids at the time provided some errors which was typical of the time when such news relied very much on word of mouth. The events which unfolded following the murder were somewhat expected. The North Eastern Daily Gazette strangely described the Town of Crook being thrown into a state of “Great Excitement”. Sergeants Smith and Rispin had attended the scene to apprehend her only to find she had disappeared and was found later by her Husband at Harperley Gate. She was taken back to the Police Station and kept in the Sergeants Kitchen and was guarded there by a Policeman over night. By morning time her mental state was showing no change. An inquest was then held by the Deputy Coroner Mr. J.T. Proud at The Royal Corner Hotel just 2 days after the murder at 11 o’clock. 12
At intervals Margaret hid her face in her handkerchief and sobbed bitterly gazing round curiously but vacantly with her head thrown back in rest against the long settle. The evidence was heard and a jury reached a verdict of “Wilful Murder”. Margaret showed no signs of consciousness on this verdict being given. She was moved back to the Police Station where a large crowd watched. The next day Margaret was taken to Bishop Auckland Magistrates Court. There Margaret was able to ask some questions of her own, however often incoherent. She seemed to have begun realising at this time the act she had carried out and said “She was sorry, not for herself, but for those she had left behind”. She was conveyed to Durham Assizes indicted on the capital charge, however on leaving friends, family and even Police officers gave her a kiss stating that nothing had affected them more. On 10th July 1891 Margaret attended Durham County Courts where she was committed to the County Lunatic Asylum so that relatives

could have easy access to her. This was in Winterton, Sedgefield. The Criminal Register read “The Grand Jury having returned a true Bill of Indictment for Wilful Murder and the Petty Jury having found that the accused was guilty of the act charged against her but was insane at the time she committed the act, ordered that one be detained in strict custody until Her Majesty’s pleasure be shall be known respecting her”. How long Margaret spent at the Asylum is unknown however it is known that she left and returned again. By 1901 however, Margaret had returned home to her family and was even caring for grand children in 1911. However things did not end there and in 1917, Margaret suffered a relapse in her home at Jobs Hill Farm. Her son John Robinson aged 30 years had decided to join the Army to fight in the War. Being her only son Margaret was upset by this and had already been very depressed. She
went to a sister-in-laws house and asked for two gun cartridges which she said were to be used against birds. The next morning Margaret prepared breakfast and she was seen to be very depressed. Her husband noticed the gun was missing from the press top, but Margaret declared that it was in an absolutely safe place. Mrs Robinson afterwards went upstairs and the John Robinson, her husband followed. He saw his wife standing at the bedroom door with the gun to her shoulder and she exclaimed “Stand Back,” and fired immediately. The bullet whizzed past his head and struck the door. Murder he wrote This month Out & About speaks to former Norfolk police officer and Crook based author Chris Clark about his life and writing career. First could you tell us a little bit of history about yourself and how you ended up settling in Crook. I am a retired Norfolk police officer 1966-1994 before that I did two years 1964-1966 working in the Royal kitchen gardens at Sandringham for HM The Queen. My Dad Tom was a Scot who moved from Galashiels and lived in Newcastle 1935-1939 and his paternal Grandmother Agnes Renton Wares was born and lived in Newton-By-The-Sea, Seahouses, Northumberland. Tom joined the RAF and eventually was stationed at Bircham Newton, in NW Norfolk and that was where I was born on Christmas Day 1945. My Wife (Her Mum, Grandparents and Great Grandparents all hailed from Gateshead) and I moved up to Trimdon Station during 2004 after falling in love with County Durham and in November 2006 moved to Low Mown Meadows, Crook. We love the town, the people and the area and would not wish to live anywhere else. How did you first get into writing? I started writing at the grand old age of 65 some five years ago which was a 25 year WW2 and Cold War Royal Air Force biography 1939-1964 of my late Father Tom Clark of whom I knew little about his service as he was a very personal man and spoke little of himself. Quickly following-on was a WW2 story of two Squadrons 55 and 223 who fought 1940-1945 side by side together with the Eighth Army in North Africa, Sicily and Italy. The book is full of first hand accounts from veterans who were in their 90’s during 2012 when they gave them to me. Additionally Tom was with one of them during 1944 in Northern Italy.

Following on from that I learnt about an abduction attempt which occurred to my Wife when she was an early teenager during 1971 this led me to fully research the early years of Robert Black the serial child killer. Pending publication with John Blake publishing circa Spring 2017. Coming up against a solid wall on the Black research, I then investigated unsolved murders and attacks which had occurred to lone females all over The UK during the 1970’s and from that research had a book published. Currently I have written and published Part 1 of my autobiography with Part 2 due out in the autumn. I also have a further Pot Pourri of unsolved murders nearing completion and ready for submission. How many books have you had published to date? Currently I have had four books published: 2011: “From Hitler’s U-Boats To Khrushchev’s Spyflights” 25 years with Thomas Buchanan Clark RAF. Pen&Sword Aviation Publishing. 2012: “Rommel Versus The Imperturbable Eighteen” (AKA The Twelve Night Intruders) Following the Exploits of 55 and 223 Squadron in North Africa Malta Sicily and Italy during WW2. Coast & Country Publishing. 2015: “Yorkshire Ripper: The Secret Murders” by Chris Clark and Tim Tate John Blake Publishing. 2016: “The Laughing Policeman” Policing in Norfolk 1966-1981 my autobiography Part One.
Don’t forget to quote Out & About Magazine when responding to adverts.
Roughly how much time do you spend researching each subject or case? Research time varies but in the case of my Father’s story I spent from 2007 until 2010 building his story from the many Squadrons and roles that he served in from various sources including his Personnel History and National Archives. The Tribute Book to 55/223 Squadrons had to be researched very quickly and published within several months due to the fact that most of the contributors who were aged 93 plus were dying off rapidly and I wanted them to see their account written down before their demise. The Robert Black book I spent some five years fully research before submission for publication. The Peter Sutcliffe book I started researching at the end of 2011 and it was published June 2015. My own story I had written down in scrap book form from 1986 until retirement in 1994 but it took a further 20 years to see the light of day. What are you working on at the moment? The current book project is a Pot Pourri of unsolved murders and Rapes in stand alone chapters in which I examine and analysis each case or number of cases in detail with a suspect for them. They cover “The Hammersmith Nude Murders 1959-1965” aka “Jack The Stripper” where I have an identified suspect. The case of Judith Roberts a 14 year old schoolgirl murdered near Tamworth, Staffs in 1972 which led to the wrongful arrest, 25 year imprisonment and miscarriage of justice to Andrew James Evans.
Seven Scottish murders of women during the 1970’s which I have attributed to Angus Sinclair the convicted (twice trial) 1979 “World’s End” murderer. The other chapters range from West Country Dog Walker murders to Kent Bed-Sit Murders and The Riddler Bath Rapist. I am also finishing off Part 2 of my autobiography entitled “The Urban Spaceman” ready for autumn publication. To date what is your favourite piece of work that you’ve had published? For me the most satisfying book is “Yorkshire Ripper: The Secret Murders”. Peter Sutcliffe clearly murdered and attacked far more women (and men) than the 13 murders and 7 attempted murders which are attributed to him and in my co-authored book we lay a case for Sutcliffe (in June 2015), who was a sexual deviant and necrophilac killer, to be removed from Broadmoor to a normal Prison (raised in December 2015) and for 23 additional murders and further attacks which we identify to be re-investigated with Sutcliffe in mind. It also covers the 3 miscarriages of justice one of whom is Stephen Downing wrongfully arrested and imprisoned for the 1973 murder of Wendy Sewell in Bakewell Cemetery which was recently featured (Wed 29 June) on Judge Rinder True Crime Series. Additionally I was interviewed in Leeds last month for a forthcoming documentary about Maureen Lea a 21 year old Art Student who was left for dead by Peter Sutcliffe in Leeds during October 1980. Lastly why should people read a Chris Clark book and where can they get them from? All of my books are on very diverse subjects and I would recommend the Ripper book (and Robert Black one when that comes out) all currently released are readily available via Amazon or my www.armchairdetective.org.uk which also houses many newspaper articles, TV and Radio Interviews.

From 17th August there will be a drop in session each month from 10 till 12 that will be ÂŁ1 with unlimited tea, coffee and biscuits.
They have already have one member who barely leaves the house and said the highlight of her week was going out to the recycling bin.

Crook Town Juniors Crook Town Juniors were formed at the start of the year by a group of parents who just want their children to have fun. They are very lucky to have 2 sponsors in TLR property maintenance and Matalink and were very grateful for a kind donation from Northumbrian Water. Crook Town Juniors have been training on a Friday night and last month saw their first match. They played amazing and won 6-1 and following that their 2nd match was an equally fantastic 1-1 draw. Well done boys!
