Toponomy Revisited Story by Aaron Cowen

In my very first article for Out and About Magazine, I discussed my theory on the Toponomy of Crook. Toponomy is the study of place names. Generally we think of our area as being relatively modern and born of the Victorian Industrial age, when the railways were laid and coal was beginning to be mined more heavily. It is clear however by various place names in the locality, that human occupation goes far into the distant past to the Neolithic and Bronze Age. Tow Law is of that period and it is interesting that prior to 1865 all that existed in that Tow Law House, just area was off Ironworks road. Tow Law House. The building still exists today. The word “Law” is prominent in County Durham such as Harelaw and Maiden Law. The word derives from the Anglo Saxon word “hlaw” which means rounded hill and was often given to places with an ancient burial mound. Certainly the area is somewhat littered with Bronze Age burial mounds. There are known Bronze Age burials at Hedleyhope, another at nearby Wheatley Grange and one at Satley. The word “Tow” (pronounced how it is spelt rather than “toe” like when towing a car), is also used as a surname. This may derive from pre 7th century “toh” meaning tough, vigorous or stubborn or it may derive from “Tulach” a steep knoll, which is my preferred choice as Tulach could quite easily become Tow Law. However with all that snow, they are certainly a tough group of people. The Romans left their mark at Stonechester between Stanley Crook and Willington. The word “Chester” being Roman for Camp. Rumby Hill uses the suffix “by” which means farmstead,

6

village or settlement and is of Viking origin. During the 9th century County Durham would have come under an area known as Danelaw, or under Danish Rule. This was defined in a treaty of 885AD by Viking King Guthren. “Rum” was likely to have been a Viking who owned this farmstead. Despite the place name origins, in 1957 some Neolithic Flints were found here confirming that humans roamed the area long, long ago. Another Viking Word was “Gate” or “Gata” meaning street. Watergate in Crook would therefore be Water Street and it is interesting to note that Roddymoor was originally written as Rhodamore Gate. Howden-le-Wear may derive from pre 7th Century Danish-Viking word “heafod-denu” which means the head of Rumby Hill. the valley and of course “le-wear” means close to the River Wear. “Wear” is an old Celtic word for “River of Blood”. The Saxons also left their mark by places using the suffix “ley” which means clearing. Since our area was part of the Forest of Brancepeth, there are a large number of places with this suffix. Stanley refers to a stone clearing. Like Tow Law, no village existed prior to the 1840s and the name Stanley Crook is taken from Stanley Hall. In the past the area was simply known as Mount Pleasant. However this became Stanley Hilltop and then Stanley Crook. Harperley

is another example which would be Harpers Clearing. Hunwick supposedly was a farm or village belonging to a Saxon named Huna. Hunwick itself dates back to pre medieval times and was notably affected by William the Conquerors harrying of the North in which he burnt all of the lands destroying crops and therefore the locals food source. And of course Crook from the Saxon word Cruck meaning Bend which relates to the bend in the beck. Willington uses the suffix “ton” which means settlement. Willington was therefore a saxon settlement of the family of Wifel. Helmington could have been a settlement belonging to someone at the helm so to speak. It is known that during the reign of Edward I

(1272 - 1307) there was resident in the area a Hugone de Bycheborne. “de” meaning “of”. It is thought that Beech or Birch trees grew along the banks of Crook beck. Also the word “burn” is an Anglo Saxon word for “River”, and on some maps, Crook Beck is referred to as the River Beechburn. Other areas became Bitchburn. The place names all around us were given their names for a reason and so each name can and does in many cases tell us a story. Many of our local streets reflect well known individuals from our past, or of historical figures and even historical events. Such as Inkerman Row at Tow Law, Sebastopol Terrace at Bowden Close and so on. If you know about the origins of your street or house, then please let us know.

Aaron is 34 years old, is a keen amateur historian and one of the admins of the Crook Town and District History Group Facebook group, he is also Chairman of the Empire Electric Palace group.

Spotlight on singer/songwriter Corey Spence This month we take a look at Corey Spence, a 24 year old singer/ songwriter born and bred in Crook. How long have you been into music? As long as I can remember I’ve always had a passion for music. I used to sing in the shower to my favourite songs by the likes of Stereophonics, The Verve, Oasis, Nirvana and R.E.M. My Dad, “Gavin Spence”, an avid music fan himself used to listen to music in the house while I was growing up and would often sing along, I loved his voice and even though my Dad isn’t really a singer he has a great voice and great taste in music. As I went through school I was influenced by dance music and shortly after got a set of turntables to learn how to DJ and MC, if it wasn’t for that genre of music I would never have learnt how to write songs and rhymes, although I’m not a big fan of the rave scene anymore I do find that it helped me with songwriting and timing. Who’s your musical influences and what’s your favourite song to perform? I have many musical influences, a lot of which come from what albums my Dad used to play when I was younger. I found this style of music was suited to my voice and once I’d taught myself to play guitar, songs like, “The 16

drugs don’t work”, “Wonderwall”, “Songbird” and “Time of your life” were all songs I felt I wanted to learn. I guess my Dad has had a massive influence on me in terms of music. My own influences include Paolo Nutini, Ed Sheeran, Tupac Shakur, Stereophonics and Bob Marley all for different reasons. Tupac Shakur went through rough times but always put his thoughts into music, no matter how hard times got for him and I find that inspiring. Ed Sheeran used to busk and that’s how I started singing in front of people and look what he has achieved, selling out Wembley being one. I’ve been compared to Paolo Nutini a few times which is a huge compliment. He’s got soul, style and is an amazing performer and that’s what I love about him. I cover his song “Last Request” as it’s one of my favourite all time songs to perform. Bob Marley is a massive influence as I love reggae music, it’s so mellow and relaxing, at the moment, “No woman no cry” and “Redemption song” are 2 of my favourite songs to perform as they get the crowd going. How would you describe your style for those who haven’t heard you? I would say my style is sort of rough and rugged. I’ve been told I have a husky/gravely voice with a nice tone so I’d say I have a different/raw style but that works really well with the kind of music I perform. What has been your favourite venue to play and why? My favourite wedding I’ve performed at has to be Gary and Dawn

Don’t forget to quote Out & About Magazine when responding to adverts.

Spence’s wedding at Matfen Hall Hotel, although we share the same surname we are not at all related so I guess that’s just a coincidence but I loved every part of performing on their wedding day. Also whilst working in Salou, Spain in 2015, I did an Ed Sheeran tribute show in one of the hotels and the crowd were amazing, I had the crowd on their feet singing “Sing” and they kept on singing and clapping for around 10 minutes after I’d finished the song, so the atmosphere there was incredible. Lastly I’ll never forget being a support act for 2016 Blues Award Winner Rebecca Downes at Mickleton R&B Club as it was a ticketed event and I’d never performed at a ticket selling venue before. Where do you see yourself musically in the next 5 years? It’s hard to predict where I will be in 5 years, but my immediate plans are to create my own merchandise, write and record my own original album. My message is love and happiness and that’s what I intend to spread to make others feel

happy and positive. I hope that in 5 years time I can be selling out arenas and music venues all over the UK and the wider world. I would love to show the world that a lad from a small town in County Durham can make a difference to the music world. I’m a self taught singer, songwriter and guitarist so that’s proof what you can do with a practice and dedication. I first learned to play guitar when I lived in Sunniside, being a small village I found there wasn’t a great deal to do, so I taught myself to play the guitar. Why should people come and see you? I have a unique style combined with a powerful voice and have more to offer as each day goes by. You can come along to one of my shows in December as I perform at The Red Lion in North Bitchburn on 2nd and 30th December and The Mill in Crook on 23rd December. I also appear with an incredibly talented support act named Pip Waite who sings a variety of jazzy/blues music from Norah Jones, Amy Winehouse, Pat Benatar and Shania Twain. For all bookings and enquiries you can contact Corey on 07879 547 613.
