Spotlight on the The Dementia Support Cafe. This month we take another look at The Dementia Support Cafe which is held at St. Catherine’s Church in Crook every month. For those that missed the last article we ran on you in June 2017 tell us, what is the Dementia Support Café? The Dementia Support Café provides a safe, friendly and caring environment for those living with dementia and those caring for them. It’s an environment where you can meet others in the same situation on a regular basis and be supported by them. The Café meets in the side aisle of St. Catherine’s Church on the 2nd Saturday of every month and offers entertainment, activities and a place where you can relax and enjoy a cuppa plus it’s all free. During this last year we have been entertained by solo artists, a duo, a group, a ukulele band and many others. Some of our entertainers are local and some are from further afield giving us songs from Doris Day to Abba. In October we were entertained by Noel Brooks who took the microphone around and had everyone joining in with the songs. In the interval, while we played a game of bingo, Noel produced hats made out of balloons and gave them to everyone to take home. We had a party of residents join us from West Lodge – we loved having them and they had a wonderful time. Those diagnosed with dementia, and their carers, are faced with all kinds of challenges, including social isolation, and our Dementia Support Café offers a little oasis of brightness in what can otherwise be a very lonely and exhausting life. The Café enables caregivers to share experiences and tips with people in similar situations in relaxed surroundings. 12
Tell us a little bit about the origin of the Dementia Support Café and who can it help support? St. Catherine’s Church in Crook carried out a lot of research and it was found that there was little or no support for those living with dementia or their carers and set out to open a Dementia Support Café to address this – you don’t have to be a church goer to come to the Café – it’s free and open to all. What has changed over the last 18 months since we last chatted? There have been many changes but most have happened during this year. Initially we had 8 families joining us on a regular basis but during this year 5 of our members have gone into nursing homes and although their carers still come to the Café, we would love to welcome more. Another change is that, with Alzheimer’s UK,

we are now working to become a Dementia Friendly Community and are amazed at the support we have received from the people of Crook. This initiative can take up to 3 years and further information about this will be coming out in the next few weeks. A major bonus is that we have been awarded funding to carry our Dementia Support Café through into 2020. This support has come from Durham County Council, Durham Community Action, Altogether Better Durham, Jack Drum Arts, The Scotto Trust, our local Independent Councillors, and the Greggs Foundation. We have also been supported with donations, either in cash or kind from The Blue Stone Tea Shop, The Freezer Shop, The One Stop Shop, Mary’s Ice Cream Parlour, the local Branch of Greggs, Clemitson’s Pharmacy, and Ritchie Coatsworth and this enables us to offer this free resource to all who need it. We are indebted to them all and give them our sincere thanks.
popular request, we have Noel Brookes back with us again, he’s a singer, balloon artist, and magician. In March, also new to us, we have the Twilight Two. As mentioned earlier we have a variety of activities but we always like a game of Bingo. Once again this is free with lovely prizes donated by friends of the Café. How can people get in touch or get involved with the Dementia Support Café? You can contact Lynn on 01388 329 615, Hazel on 07419 329 952 or Vince on 07577 452 766. At our Café we know we cannot offer a cure for dementia but we can offer support and signpost families in the right direction to get additional support and we do this with care, understanding, and love.
Who runs the Dementia Support Café? The Café is run by St. Catherine’s Church with approximately 10 volunteers who set up, serve tea, coffee and snacks, wash up and clear up at the end and anyone wishing to help can just pop along any 2nd Saturday in the month – we would love to see you. Tell us about any events you have planned. On 8th December we shall be having our Christmas Lunch at the Blue Stone Tea Shop then in 2019 we shall have a different entertainer each month. In January, new to us, we have Seatones Singers, February, by Don’t forget to quote Out & About Magazine when responding to adverts.

A Royal visit in history Story by Aaron Cowen
You cannot speak much about the history of the United Kingdom, without mentioning the rulers of the country. Royalty imposes a certain curiosity and mystery and often stories, whether true or false have been attached to these Royal figures. Stories such as King Charles I slept a night here. Our locality is no different. Firstly, Hunwick was named by two Icelandic researchers Stefan Bjornsson and Bjorn Vernhardsson as the site of the Battle of Brunanburh. The battle was fought in 937AD between Æthelstan, King of England, and an alliance of Olaf Guthfrithson, King of Dublin; Constantine II, King of Alba (now known as Scotland) and Owen, King of Strathclyde. One of the historiographical crux’s of this battle is the fact that it is often cited as the point of origin for English nationalism. Additionally, historians such as Michael Livingston argue that “the men who fought and died on that field forged a political map of the future that remains [in modernity], arguably making the Battle of Brunanburh one of the most significant battles in the long history not just of England, but of the whole of the British Isles.” The road through Rumby Hill from Crook to North Bitchburn is called Constantine Road and on an old map from 1810 is named simply Constantine. Constantine lost a son in the battle who was supposedly buried near the battle site. Hunwick was also believed to have suffered at the hands of William the Conqueror during the Harrying of the North. Although it is unlikely William took part or visited Hunwick. The Roman Road known as Dere Street from York to Corbridge was well used even in medieval times and parts of it is still in use as modern roads. Dere Street ran from Binchester Roman Fort, through 16
Hunwick and Willington on route to Lanchester Roman Fort. In Willington it branched off towards Durham. We have to wonder who may have travelled along such a road since it was considered to be such an important route. What is certain, is that a road would be far easier and quicker to travel along than rougher, unmade ground. We know for instance that in 1298 King Edward I used the road when he marched with his forces on his way to the Battle of Falkirk. In Wolsingham the oldest houses there are at Whitfield Place on Front Street. Here there are 3 cottages, the left-most dated 1677 and with the initials ‘DM’. The other properties here have an even longer history. They are said to have been converted from the former Pack Horse Inn where Edward III may have rested on returning from his unfruitful encounter with the Scots in Weardale in April 1327. Another King, Charles II, is said to have ridden his horse up the internal staircase of the house in the 17th century and it still has an impressive staircase today. Whitfield Place.
Wolsingham Grammar School was established in 1614, and in 1911 a new building was opened. It is now part of a split-site Comprehensive school with another part built from 2014–2015 and opened in 2016 by the Duke of Gloucester. King Edward I

Neville (relative of the Neville’s of Brancepeth and Raby Castles). There had been too many threats to her in Scotland and so she came to Northern England. Apparently, she Mary Queen of Scots. crossed the moor at Spennymoor and is said to have rested on a stone on the moor. This stone is thought to be in Willington and is still there to this day. She was later arrested at Workington, Cumberland. This helped to bring about the Rising of the North which involved the Neville’s and men from Helminden Rawe were arrested for their involvement. I am a little dubious about this story as somehow the dates of these events do not add up. I can also find no reliable reference for this visit to Spennymoor. pitches. Although it shocked the local miners that the Duke was wearing makeup, to presumably look his best. Men simply did not wear makeup did they! I wonder what they would have thought about the likes of David Bowie? In 1975 the Queen Mother had an overnight stop at Witton Park. On 27th January 1987 Princess Anne drove through Crook Market Place on her way to visit Ramars dress factory. At 6 years old I remember walking from St. Cuthbert’s School down to where Lidl now stands. Children on both sides of the road lined the road waving Union Jacks. When the car approached, we did not really understand who she was, except that she was someone important. As the car drove past the window was wound so far down and all we could see was a hand waving through the window. The Duke of Gloucester visited West Durham Youth Club at Glenholme, Crook in 2010. This was originally the Boys Club and was originally opened by The Duke and Duchess of Kent in 1963 The Duke of Kent visited St. Cuthbert’s Centre to unveil a plaque and to plant a tree. If you know of any other stories connecting the local area to a Royal visit, do let us know.
In 1938 the then, Duke of Kent visited Greenhead Sports Complex which had been gifted by the family of Smelt House (now Fir Tree Grange) in Howden-le-Wear. The locals at the time moved around tons of colliery waste to form two football
