The Toponymy of Crook Story by Aaron Cowen
Toponymy is the study of place names and many suggestions have been given over the years as to the origins of Crook. Some say it was named after a person. Certainly a Walter Croc owned land in nearby Wolsingham. Also a Petri del Croke is mentioned often in the 14th century, although his name translates as Peter of the Croke and therefore lived in a place by that name, rather than the place being named after him. Petri most likely belonged to Crook Hall in Durham. Others say it comes from the shape of a Bishops Crozier with links to the Bishops of Durham. The word “Crook” comes from Old Norse ‘krókr’ or Saxon ‘Cruc’ meaning crooked. The general consensus is that the word derives from a geographical feature rather than a personal name. There are of course other such places in England named Crook. Cumbria and Devon, provide us with the best known. Crook in Devon lies on a series of bends along the River Devon. Crook, Cumbria, again lies on a sharp bend, in a nearby stream. Our Crook was first mentioned in a Will of Sir Ralph Neville, 1st Earl of Westmoreland in 1425. At that time the area was part of the Forest of Brancepeth with Raby and Brancepeth Castle being part of the Neville’s estate. The Will states “Cruyk and one watermill there”.
An 1839 Tithe Map reveals the location of the Water Mill which was in fact a Corn Mill with a Mill Race and a Mill Pond. The beck does not provide enough power to turn a water wheel and so the water was diverted from the beck along a Mill Race and to an area which was dammed to provide the Mill Pond. Water was then fed to the Water Wheel and back into the beck. The remains of the Mill Race can still be seen adjacent to the Allotments at the top of Arthur Street and strangely enough, was diverted from the beck on a very sharp bend. Could this be the bend in the river? I believe so and certainly the bend is a prominent enough feature when you look at it close up.
In 1498 Ralph Neville 3rd Earl of Westmoreland died and again left a Will in which it states “A tenement called Croke (a watermill in Brancepeth)”. So it would appear that Crook began as a Water Mill. Aaron is 34 years old, works as an Architectural Technologist and is a keen amatuer historian, he is also Chairman of the Empire Electric Palace group. The Station’s return In today’s climate it’s become the norm for local pubs to close down and never serve another pint of ale. So in November of last year, it was a pleasant surprise to see The Station on Tow Law High Street reopen after serving it’s last pint in 2009. No strangers to the pub trade, Aaron & Shaun Hicks-Henry completely revamped the Station all within a 4 week period since taking it on in November 2015. Over the years they’ve ran the Earl Derby in Stanley Crook, The Burn in Willington and The Coach and Horses at Crook.
Walk into the Station and you are immediately made to feel at home, cosy seating areas, contemporary decor and a log burner burns away in the corner as the smell of home cooking fills the air. The kitchen serves up a range of home cooked dishes plus traditional Sunday lunches every Sunday 12pm - 3pm.

Spotlight on acoustic singer Meghan Nicholson This month we point the spotlight on local musician Meghan Nicholson. Meghan is 19 years old, from Crook and currently lives in Scotland while studying Psychology at the University of St. Andrews. How long have you been into music? I have been into music for as long as I can remember, and I have always loved singing. Learning to play the guitar when I was 13 was a big step forward because it meant that I was able to accompany my singing and play without restrictive backing tracks.
more laid back and softer acoustic style. For a taste of what I do, please check out my YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/ officialmeghan.
My first ever instrument was the violin, which gave me a basic understanding of music when I was younger, and I am now taking beginner’s piano lessons at University, which I love. Who are your musical influences and what is your favourite song to preform? I have a wide range of musical influences, which is essential in order to be a rounded musician. For my live acoustic covers, I look to artists such as Ed Sheeran, and covers artist Boyce Avenue for inspiration. I love Ed’s ‘stripped back’ sound and Boyce Avenue’s ability to put their own twist on any song you could possibly think of. My favourite song to perform is the Guns and Roses’ classic, “Sweet Child of Mine”, as it sounds incredibly beautiful when played acoustically, and it always gets a fantastic response at gigs. How would you describe your style for those that haven’t heard you? My style is versatile, and as a covers artist, I like to adapt popular songs to fit a much 18
What has been your favourite venue to play and why? As I now live in Scotland while doing my degree, I love coming back to my hometown of Crook to play in the pubs and clubs here, as I am continuously overwhelmed by the amount of people that come to support me.
Don’t forget to quote Out & About Magazine when responding to adverts.
Where do you see yourself musically in the next 5 years? I hope to never stop playing live music, and I intend to continue singing alongside my studies in psychology. And last of all why should people come and see you? My set consists of some fantastic rock and pop classics, so there is something for everyone. I enjoy changing these songs to make them my own, and I adapt them to an acoustic style. Plus, it is important to support all live music, especially in County Durham! To book Meghan for gigs or special occasions, please contact Eileen Graham on 07981 262 037.

Plan for your funeral There comes a stage in all our lives when it’s natural to think about when we won’t be here. We wonder about loved ones and what to leave them. There are some things, however, that we wouldn’t wish to leave them. These include the burden of high funeral costs and the worry of deciding on the funeral arrangements. If you have concerns about such matters, a pre-paid funeral plan, managed by an independent trust, will bring you peace of mind. Gold Charter Funeral Plans Hardy’s Funeral Services offer Golden Charter Funeral Plans exclusively. Your money is held in trust in an independently managed trust fund. The cost of your funeral will be paid from the Golden Charter Trust at the time of your death.
