Dem Bells, Dem Bells Esmeralda! Story by Aaron Cowen

Prior to 1994 the church bells at Our Lady Immaculate and St. Cuthberts Church in Crook had been silent for a good many years except for the Clock Chimes. I was 13 years old at the time and had heard them being played by someone while carrying out maintenance on the clock and thought it would be nice to learn. Roger Kelly the organist at the church

initially showed me the ropes. After one lesson I was on my own. Since that point I have played them almost every Sunday before mass, countless weddings and even for the Duke of Kent. Generally I am the only person who plays them, but recently we have had a few more looking to try their hand including my 5 and 7 year old sons, Joel and Kieran. Sadly this is a tradition that may be lost in the not too distant future, as churches struggle to maintain a congregation and an aging population of priests having to cover 3 and 4 parishes each. Fr. Gordan Ryan the current parish priest himself has to manage Tow Law, Wolsingham and Crook. Fr. Brian Murphy who was once parish priest in Crook manages the parish at Willington. Roughly 150 parishioners regularly attend the church at Crook today compared to a staggering, 1500 attendees back in 1895. How on earth did they fit them all in the church? Back in the 1980s attendances were around 450 and the church was at that time packed. 8

When the church was built in 1854, architect Edwin Pugin had designed the building to have a tower and spire. However funds at the time would not allow this. By 1897 parish priest Fr. Augustine Pippet, decided it was time to finish the church off by completing the tower and what better time to do it than Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. Lots of fundraising and collections were taken along wit a massive 4 day bizarre which was held by parishioners to raise funds, even non Catholics contributed. The amount raised was thought to be something near a day’s wage for each person in the town. Something else you don’t see in today’s climate, while trying to raise funds to buy the old Empire Electric Palace cinema for example. The basic cost of the construction was recorded as £1269.00. Architects Dunn, Hansom and Fenwick of Newcastle were commissioned, and they came up with a new design with the spire omitted. Designed in a Tudor Gothic Style, the tower would reach a height of 100 feet to the top of its pinnacles and providing a set of ornate cast iron spiral steps from top to bottom, totalling 103 in number. On opening day red white and blue jars with candles inside to symbolise the colours of the Union Jack were lined along the towers constellations shining out in the night sky like a beacon. The Clock which has two faces, was built by William Potts and Sons of Leeds and is still maintained today by the same company. Once over the clock was hand wound every day to keep it ticking and it’s huge pendulums swinging. Today this process has become electronic and the pendulums have been removed.

There are 8 bells making up one octave. They are made of a bronze alloy and were cast by John Warner and Sons of Cripplegate in London. The same bell founders also casted the Great Bell known as Big Ben here in the North East at Norton, near Stockton on Tees. All bells were given a blessing similarly to a baptism, and as such are each are given a name of an important religious figure. They are 1) St. Cuthert, 2) St. Mary, 3) St. Augustus, 4) St. Ethelbert & St. Edward the Confessor, 5) St. Thomas of Canterbury, 6) St. Thomas Perry, 7) St. Thomas More, 8) St. Cuthbert Maine.

drunk. He decided to fix the bells in position and rack the bell ropes together. This meant that the number of players could be reduced to one. The first system of this kind was installed in Ellacombes Parish of Bitton in Gloucestershire. Many of the Ellacombe chime systems today have been removed and many which remain are now, like ours used to play tunes or hymns like that of a Carillon system. Fr. Pippet, one would assume favoured a chiming system since he was from Somerset and would have seen them in action. No doubt the unruly drunken bell ringers may have played a part in his choice. He was strongly against the consumption of alcohol and he was known to chase out his parishioners from the nearby pubs. Finally a stained glass window depicting St. Cuthbert being requested and made Bishop was installed at the base of the tower dedicated to those who helped to raise the tower. Today the tower can sometimes be seen flying either the Union Jack or the Papal Flag, usually indicating that the parish is holding its annual Garden Fete.

Only the largest of the bells, or the St. Cuthbert Bell can be used for Full circle ringing. However the

bell today can only be rang at a quarter circle. The bell when in full swing creates a force far greater than the bells actual weight of 1 ton and as such it causes the tower to sway, putting strain on the structure. 7 of the 8 bells are fixed in a stationary position allowing them to be chimed by myself using what is known as an Ellacombe chime system. This system was only devised in 1821 by Rev. Henry Ellacombe of Gloucestershire, who was tired of his bell ringers turning up unruly and

And for those who get close enough may even notice the carvings along the top of the tower. The four Gargoyles at the four corners represent the four gospel writers of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. You can find a video of the tower on youtube and see the chimes being played. Type the following into you web browsers address bar: https://youtu.be/Ca3UTUDXLYU

Spotlight on T20 Promotions boss Shane Dent. This month we take a look at Shane Denton, boss of Willington based T20 Promotions who promote and hold events. What do T20 Promotions do? T20 Promotions put on events and promote singers (Currently manage and promote one). How did you get into this? Getting into this was by chance, I was wanting to raise money for a charity and set up an event to help with this. The event sold out in 1 day, the money raised went to local causes and local people struggling. At the time I wanted to go self employed so I created T20 Promotions to put on events so I could build a future for me, my fiancée and my loved ones.

What do T20 Promotions hope to achieve in the future? What I want to achieve with T20 Promotions in the future is to be putting on events Nationwide as well as local (I’ve already achieved this with an event in Essex on 13th May 2017 ). We want to be putting on nationwide events on a regular basis and I personally want to be recognised by the CPA (Concert Promoters Association) to get into the big arenas (One day at a time ha ha). We also want to invest in the grass roots level of music to give people starting out a platform on which to shine. Aside from music we also put on comedy nights, Q&A events plus much more. so we put on a wide variety of events. You started T20 Promotions from scratch so far what’s your greatest achievement? Its not been easy all the time, its hard work but very rewarding in the sense of when the

night arrives of an event there’s no better feeling watching the night ahead. Greatest achievement within the business to date would have to be the rapid growth of T20 Promotions going from my home town of Willington to an event in Essex. Overcoming lots of obstacles to get where we are today. Do you have your eye on any local acts at the moment? I’m taking bookings for a local lad called Corey Spence who has featured in the magazine before, I help manage him and book him on events. He is definitely a superstar in the making, incredible voice, incredible passion and gives 110% into everything not much more you want from an artist. Where do you see yourself and T20 Promotions in the next 5 years? In the next 5 years I would love nothing more than to have a sell out arena event. I want the business to run itself so to speak financially as I’ve invested a lot of time and money into this. We are building a great team too, so everything is building up to where we want to be. How can people follow what you are up to? People can follow what we up to via facebook.com/T20promotions and via twitter @T20promotions. I would like to take this time to thank Out & About Magazine for having us feature and wish you and the team nothing but success with future. Are you a talented musician, artist or worthy charity that would benefit from some publicity? Do you want to feature in the next edition of Out & About magazine? Then simply email me at ads@outandaboutmagazinenortheast.co.uk
