An Outstanding School

Parkside’s

World Class Status! Students and staff at Parkside Academy are delighted to join an elite group of schools who have been awarded the World Class Schools Quality Mark (WCSQM). Parkside is the first school in County Durham to receive this prestigious award and we are proud to be one of only sixty world class schools in the country! Our Student Senior Leadership Team led the school’s application. As part of the rigorous application process students produced a detailed audit covering all aspects of the school’s provision and produced a video

entitled ‘A Week in the Life of our World Class School’ which showcased Parkside’s teaching and learning and extra-curricular provision. Students also attended an assessment centre in Leeds where they worked with teams from other schools to complete a challenging project based on re-modelling the Learning and Resource centre at Morley Academy in Leeds. Miranda Perry, the Director of the WCSQM, said that she was “extraordinarily impressed” by the way that our students represented Parkside Academy. Everyone at Parkside Academy is proud that we have achieved the accolade of becoming a World Class School. Our Student Senior Leadership Team thoroughly enjoyed attending the presentation evening, which took place at Cambridge University. Kelvin Simpson, Headteacher, said: “The achievement of this prestigious award is testament to the skills and dedication of the staff who have created an aspirational culture where our students believe in their abilities and are proud to strive towards the highest of academic outcomes.”

Operation Pied Piper! Story by Aaron Cowen

World War II broke out on 1st September 1939 although Britain did not declare war for another 2 days. The government knew that industrial areas would be targeted by the Nazis, but they were also aware that many homes were likely to be hit as part of this. In the first 4 days of September 1939, nearly 3 million people were transported from towns and cities in danger from enemy bombers to places of safety in the countryside. Operation Pied Piper was put into action on Thursday 31st August 1939 at 11.07am with the instruction to “Evacuate Forthwith”. Many of the evacuees were school children, accompanied by 100,000 teachers acting as guardians. It must have been a traumatic experience for many and perhaps an adventure to others. Traumatic since they were separated from parents and family, sent out on their own to an unknown place, for an unknown length of time. Some would never see their families again. The plans of evacuation had been set out for many years prior to the outbreak of WW2, however the estimates of casualties were somewhat over exaggerated and rather than controlled movement the Government Propaganda caused near panic instead. Sir John Anderson was in charge of the evacuation and seemed to have little understanding of the emotional upheaval that might be created by evacuation. Many were evacuated by train. Scenes of busy stations and sobbing mothers are recalled by many evacuees. But in true British style they marched to their trains behind their teacher singing tunes as they went. The evacuation seemed to go well, however in many cases children were sent to the

10

wrong areas and the government had underestimated the space required for the evacuees. Finding them a home was difficult since they filled up fast. Many of the children were lined up allowing potential hosts to pick out which they would have live with them. Some children were treated well and placed with kind, generous and loving families. Others however were not. They were beaten, mistreated and abused by families who simply did not want them there. Some even had their rations stolen from them. It is not surprising then, that many evacuees ran away and returned home. Shildon, Crook, Willington, Wolsingham and Tow Law hosted many evacuees, mostly from Jarrow, although some did come from places like London such as Ann Donovan (nee Nesbitt) who was evacuated to Tow Law. The McConville family which included, Catherine, Margaret, George (Cass), Bede and Arthur were evacuated from Jarrow to Crook. Some remained in the area after the war and some returned home. On 31st August 1939 - Stanley Crook formed an “After Care” Committee to cater for the social and recreational needs of the evacuees coming from the Gateshead area. This committee would work in conjunction with the Reception Committee. The evacuated children were visited on 31st October 1939 by the Mayor and Mayoress of Jarrow to thank those in their area for organising the evacuees. With them came Jarrow MP Ellen Wilkinson who was involved

in the well known 1936 Jarrow March, which many of the evacuee children may have witnessed setting off for their long walk to London. On 6th March 1940 it was reported that of the 2370 evacuated to the Crook and Willington Area only 495 had remained in the area. It was expected that 800 more from Gateshead would be evacuated to the area, with Mr. W. G. Omand clerk of the Council raising concerns as to whether they had the room for them.

dropped. The ceiling fell down on top of her. Her mother was blinded and so, having no home was evacuated to Stanley Crook along with her two brothers and sister. She arrived in Stanley by car and her brothers and sister went to live in Crook. Her brothers and sister returned to Jarrow after the war however this particular lady remained in Crook. The door opening seen furthest left on the photo was her house at the time, and shows just how lucky she is to be here today.

On 14th June 1940 two boys from Byker (Newcastle) had gotten into trouble for being away from school. They had previously been evacuated to Westgate and so decided to walk all the way back there from Byker. They followed the Durham buses into Crook and slept the night in a wooden hut, before making their way to Stanhope and on to Westgate. They were obviously tired and hungry with sores on their feet but asked to stay in Weardale, because they liked it there so much. On 2nd July 1940 bombs were dropped in the Tyneside area killing 13 people and injuring 110, mostly children. A now 91 year old lady who wishes to remain anonymous was climbing her stairs when the bombs

In 1944, 300 more evacuees out of 20,000 Tyneside evacuees came to Crook and Willington.

Childhood Memories Story by Ritchie Coatsworth

A lot of people say that your school days are the best days of your lives, I have some wonderful memories of my time at Stanley Crook Primary or just simply Stanley School as it was known then. Stanley School was originally built in 1873 and at one-point pupils used to attend there until they began working life – usually down the pit. Thankfully by the time I started in the early 80s, small boys were not welcome down the pit and the many pits that Stanley once had were long gone. My first experience of Stanley School came in around 1983 when a lot of the local Mam’s ran a pre-school group in one of the former classrooms at the school that is now a private house. I remember it as a whole lot of fun, playing wonderful games such as “The A-Team” with my friends as well as organised activities like painting and singing songs. It was at this “play school” as it was known, that I met one of my best friends, Richard Carlton so it was definitely a worthwhile experience. By the time that I started school proper it was January 1985. On my first day I can vaguely recall making the long walk from Cooperative Terrace via Wooley Terrace to the school. I was excited to link up with my friends again as some of them had started school in the previous September. During my first few years at Stanley

School we were a really small school with only 45-55 pupils spread through 3 classrooms. The teaching staff consisted of the head teacher Mrs Smith, Mrs March who looked after the younger ones, Mrs Richards who taught the middle class along with Mrs Smith and finally Mr Holiday who taught the older children. I have happy memories of all of these teachers but remember everyone being scared of Mrs Smith, she wasn’t particularly scary but being the head teacher there were always rumours that she still kept the cane in her office (even though this had been abolished by the time I started school). Lastly there was the caretaker Mr Craig, who was known to the pupils as “Bob-a-Job”, at least he was when he wasn’t nearby. As a small 5-year-old Stanley school was absolutely huge, by the time I started there, the top 2 classrooms were largely redundant; there were only 3 in use as previously mentioned, these 3 are still in use today. What is now a private house is also were the dining room and old cloakrooms were situated, then you came down to where Mrs Smith’s office was with my favourite room opposite – The Craft Room, I spent many a happy day in here and this is perhaps where my love for art, design and

photography began. Through the doors from there you had the main corridor, which had the staff room at the top, and the 3 classrooms on the left, on the right you had the assembly hall that was attached to a redundant dusty building which is now the kitchens. Back in the 80s staff rooms were very smoky places, us pupils loved trying to see a teacher with a cigarette in their hand, I recall when the door opened a puff of smoke would come out, it’s funny how times change. Lastly on the right you had the film room where Mr Holiday would be in charge of loading the huge rolls of film onto the projector, I can’t actually recall what we watched apart from they were always about road safety, say no to strangers etc… and normally featured a young Michael Barrymore or had Chris Tarrant as the narrator. At the end of the school you had the 2 blocks of toilets, a cloakroom and the caretakers cupboard. I attended Stanley School from 1985-1991 and have lots of happy memories from my time there, school trips, sports days, plus the constant rumour of a resident ghost called “Oliver”. To be continued…
