Save The Empire! Story by Malcolm Read
We’re lucky in Crook to still have a Market Square which gives us an imposing centre to the town and welcomes visitors from all around, if only for the weekly Market. For a moment stop and stare at the buildings along South Street. As you look down the road you see a parade of shops, including a car parts warehouse, Speedo, which is packed full of everything you could possibly need for your car. This building has a long history and behind the shop is a gem - a historic building that is still largely intact and ready for an enthusiastic group to bring it back to life as The Empire Electric Palace Theatre.
Stepping behind the false walls of the shop brings you out into a small auditorium which has largely survived the ravages of time and use as a Bingo Hall before becoming a shop. The auditorium looks in many ways as if the audience has just left, although the paint peels from the walls and the gas lights clearly have not been used for many years! For the past 6 months a small group has been working to try to restore the theatre to it’s previous glory. The project has grown from a small idea into an exciting project that, with support, will see us once again with a working cinema and theatre in Crook.
With some generous donations the group has worked hard and has already gained charitable status as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation and they are now ready to start applying for funding to drive the project forward. Mark Eversedge, the Secretary of The Empire, talking to Out & About said, “What we really need at the moment is to be able to demonstrate to funders that the local people really want this theatre. They keep asking us to prove that people are behind us before they will consider investing in us’‘. Clearly, as you can see, there is much to be done but you can make a real difference to this project by pledging your support for the return of the Empire Electric Palace Theatre by visiting the website and filling in the membership form, you can become a member for only £5 a year or a Charter Member for £50, or simply give what you can afford. Whatever you do please pledge your support and if you want to get involved, we need you, so get in touch. Out & About Magazine fully support this exciting project and will bring you news as it happens from your Empire Theatre. Spotlight on sRs As I pull up at the rear of the Crown at Crook ready to photograph up and coming 3 piece band, sRs rehearsing, I can hear a fantastic rendition of Jumping Jack Flash blasting out from inside. I wonder to myself if the Rolling Stones are actually rehearsing inside rather than the 3 young men I was coming to photograph. As I walk in I see I was wrong and that the booming voice is actually that of 14 year old Jak Hope and not Mick Jagger, I am amazed at how talented these 3 young men are, it seems such a waste that they aren’t playing to a crowd even though they are only rehearsing. Who are sRs and what are your roles in the band?
What has been your favourite venue to play and why?
sRs are Jak Hope, Guitarist and Lead Singer. Carlton Banks, Drummer and backing vocals, and Edd Stringer, bassist.
Our favourite venue to play is the O2 Academy in Newcastle. Growing up, we all went to go and watch our favourite bands play there so we always wanted to share the same stage as them. We were lucky enough to do so in 2012.
How long have you been in SRS and what other bands have you been in? Jak and Carlton have both been in sRs for 5 years and bassist Edd joined last year. Jak sang in the band the Little Giantz from when he was 7 until he was about 9 years old when he left and set up sRs with Carlton Banks. This is Carlton and Edd’s first band.
If you could play one song at any venue in the world, where would it be and what would you play?
What are your musical influences and what is your favourite song to preform? Our musical influence vary between bands such as Kings of Leon, Young Guns, The1975 and The Rolling Stones. Our favourite song to play is we found love by Rihanna. 16
We would choose Wembley arena because it’s one of the UK’s most prestigious and largest Venus. It has always been our ambition to play a sold out show there. We would play our latest original track “She Might be the One” Because we have written the song ourselves, so every aspect of the track resonates with each of us and it would be amazing to hear the crowd singing a song which we had written.
Don’t forget to quote Out & About Magazine when responding to adverts.
Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years? In the next 5 years we see ourselves out on the road, touring the UK relentlessly, playing shows and festivals. It would be amazing to also tour Europe and play to our international fans. We would love to release an album over the next couple of years. And last of all why should people come and see you? People should come and see us at one of our shows because we make every show unique and personal. We play a range of tracks spanning over 60 years, so we cater for the whole audience, playing songs that everyone loves. As well as integrating a few original tracks into the set. We always leave the stage with people wanting more and everyone has an amazing time at our shows. Thanks sRs.
