Garage reopens Pop Top Leisure recently opened up their new operation in the Old Prince Bishop’s Garage site on New Road, Crook, the site had been empty for a number of years and was in need of some TLC. Not only had the former garage stood empty for several years it had been hit hard by vandalism and was badly damaged by fire, both of which resulted in it being exposed to the harsh County Durham weather for a number years which then caused further damage. Pop Top Leisure spent a number of months getting the site back to it’s former glory much to the satisfaction of local residents.

Moravian Murder Story by Aaron Cowen
The area has seen its fair share of murders, however one such story, mostly forgotten about occurred in 1891, you cannot help but wonder what was going through the murderers mind. This was no ordinary murder as it was the murder of a 7 month old baby girl by her mother, who was not of sound mind. Margaret Robinson (27) described as a fresh comely young woman of no. 9 Moravian Street, Crook lived with her husband John (27), a horse keeper for the Crook Co-operative Stores, and her 3 children, John (5), Margaret (3) and Ethel Jane (7 months). John was well respected in Crook especially with the upper classes. Margaret had suffered from depression over the years. She had threatened to poison her whole family in times of brief insanity. John being very concerned for his wife went to see Dr. Mackay with his Father-in-Law. The family did not want her to be confined to a mental institution, so the Doctor advised that someone should be with her at all times. It was arranged that Margaret’s sister Emily would live in with the family until such time she appeared well. After 2 months Margaret’s mental health seemed to have improved considerably and Emily decided she no longer needed to stay with the family. She informed her sister that she was going to go away to Ireland. Margaret appeared to make no reaction to this, however nothing could be further from the truth and what Margaret did 12
next was enough to shock anyone and shows just how fragile the human mind can be. Margaret was visiting a friend, Elizabeth Patterson at 13 Moravian Street along with her baby in her arms on the Sunday night on the 19th April 1891. Elizabeth had been unwell and Margaret went home to collect a bottle of cough medicine. She returned briefly to Elizabeth’s house without the child and advised her to take a spoonful of the mixture. 15 minutes later Elizabeth saw Margaret run past the window very fast and made for the direction of Harperley Crossroads. Emily, Margaret’s sister returned to the house at about 8 o’clock in the evening on hearing that the baby was not with the mother. She found the door locked so went around to the back door only to find it open, but the children were absent and the babies cradle was empty. Missing the baby she went upstairs to find the baby hanging to the bed by a silk scarf around its neck. It was Mrs Mary Ann Dixon who cut the baby down finding the body to be still warm. Her husband went to fetch the doctor. John Robinson, who had been out for a walk around the Market place, heard that his wife was on the Harperley Road and went after her. He found her about a mile and a half

away from the Harperley Crossroads on the Wolsingham Road. At this time he did not know that the child was dead and his wife said nothing. He learnt of the sad news on returning to Crook. Shortly after 8 o’clock, Dr. Mackay had been called in to see the child who found no signs of violence and the injuries were consistent

with hanging. Margaret had been taken to the Police Station however she was not locked in a prison cell and instead taken to the Kitchen. Dr. Mackay went to see her and found her to be wildly insane. She was crying and saying “Oh what have I lost. Have you found it?” She was suffering from Melancholia from which recovery was sometimes sudden and other times gradual, with sometimes as in this case, an outburst of madness. Next Time: Find out what happened next and how Margaret was to suffer for the rest of her life with this mental illness.
