Spotlight on the The Dementia Support Cafe. This month we take a look at The Dementia Support Cafe which is held at St. Catherine’s Church in Crook every month. What is the Dementia Support Cafe? The Dementia Support Cafe is a safe, friendly and caring environment for people living with dementia to meet and take part in activities while giving them an opportunity to talk about any anxieties. It enables caregivers to meet others in the same situation on a regular basis and also provides caregivers with the opportunity to learn more about dementia caring. When and why was the Dementia Support Cafe setup? After 2 initial meetings where we asked those living with dementia to come along and let us know their concerns and how they felt we could help. These meetings were supported by Dementia UK, the initial cafe was set up on 4th March as a fund raiser for Dementia UK which was then followed by monthly events run by St. Catherine’s Church. Who runs the Dementia Support Cafe? The cafe is run by a team of volunteers from St Catherine’s Church and the community. It is further supported by the County Council, local businesses and the Police and 6

Fire Brigade. For example we received a grant from the County Council and Greggs provided the refreshments for our first 2 events. With regard to activities, at our first cafe we had carpet bowls down the aisle and a floor target game which was provided by AA Flags from Consett. We also had a story teller from Durham University and last but definitely not least we had Maddie Fisher who gave us Singing for the Brain. At our second cafe we had a trip down memory lane with Michael Manuel which was fantastic followed by Maddie who led us in Singing for the Brain again. On Saturday 13th May we were all entertained by singer Chyrelle Addams and as always there was carpet bowls, a target game plus tea, coffee and cakes. Each cafe starts at 10am and ends at 12 noon. It is open to all, not just those living with dementia and its a free event and everyone is welcome. Tell us about any events you have coming up. On Tuesday 20th June we will be at Crook Library promoting Dementia Awareness.

We will be holding a fund raising evening on Wednesday 12th July at the Blue Stone Tea Shop with songs from the shows with David, Paul and Anna. Tickets will be available soon from the Blue Stone Tea Shop on Commercial Street in Crook. For further details on the Dementia Support Cafe please contact Hazel Campbell on 07419 329 952 or Rev Vince Fenton on 01388 760 939. Reader’s Views R.E. Parking Misery In response to Chris Clark’s comments on parking in Crook. I have lived in Crook all my life, not just 10 years paying Council rates which now stand at over £160 per month, to then have to pay for parking my car for which I pay road fund tax. This is what stops people from shopping in places like Crook when they can park free and shop in supermarkets. As regards the Tuesday market, people

already use the Glenholme drive. What we really need is dedicated overnight parking for tourists i.e motorhome and caravan travellers to stop on their way to the dales, thus spending money in our local shops. Ideally opposite the football field and also at the new sports centre, where nearby is an excellent pub for food. Let’s encourage people into our town not deter them with parking restrictions. The Wilkinson’s of Harperley Hall Story by Aaron Cowen

Following on from last month, we take at the Wilkinson Family of Harperley Hall. George Hutton Wilkinson was born on 25th January 1791 in Greenwich, Kent and was the son of Thomas Wilkinson and Jane Hutton. George was called to the bar in 1814 and went to the George Hutton Wilkinson Northern Circuit. He frequently presided as Judge at Durham in the trial of prisoners. He was selected by Lord Brougham as one of the commissioners for inquiring into the state of the corporations in England and Wales. He was a commissioner in Bankruptcy in Sunderland and Stockton Districts, and for many years revising barrister for Yorkshire and Lancashire. He was also for some time Chairman of the Great North of England, the Bishop Auckland and Weardale, and the Wear Valley Railways; and in addition was a magistrate for the County of Durham. In 1834 he was appointed as Recorder of Newcastle upon Tyne and Judge of the County Court of Northumberland. He owned a lot of land in the Crook area. An inheritance gained through his marriage to Elizabeth Jane Pearson daughter of George Pearson Esq. Clerk of the Peace of the County of Durham. With this marriage he also gained Harperley Park. It is highly likely that Wilkinson gave his name to the now demolished Wilkies Square which was located in High Hope Street, Crook. George died on Friday 23rd December 1859 10

after a long illness which was described as mysterious and defied all medical skill according to his obituary. He is buried next to the West Window of Witton-le-Wear The grave of George Hutton Wilkinson parish church. George and Elizabeth apparently had 11 children although only 8 are known. Many of them gained notoriety in their own right. 1. Dorethea Anne Wilkinson born in 1823 married the Rev. Arthur Duncombe-Shafto a descendant of the well known Bonny Bobby Shafto. He was the Rector of the Parish of Brancepeth and both himself and Dorethea are buried in the church yard of St. Brandons. 2. George Pearson Wilkinson born in 1823. He married Frances Vernon Mills daughter of Colonel William Mills Esquire of Helm Park and Willington Hall. George was educated at Durham University where he took his BA degree in 1844 and his MA in 1845. He then studied for the legal profession and was called to the Bar. Growing tired of law he took to religion and was ordained a deacon in 1857 and a priest in 1858 by Bishop Longley. He was appointed Rector of Thornley Village. He was also appointed to Commission of the Peace in 1854. George inherited Harperley Hall following his father’s death however lived at Helm Park Hall. A bell was added to Helm Park Hall in 1859 by Mr. Wilkinson presumably as a memorial to his father. He died in 1890 and is buried at Thornley Church.

01388 762598 3. Thomas William Wilkinson was born in 1825 and was educated in Harrow and Durham University where he took a B.A. degree. He converted from Church of England to Catholicism in 1846 having been influenced by the later Cardinal Wiseman. He was ordained a Catholic Priest in 1848. He founded the parishes of Tow Law (1848), Wolsingham (1849) and Crook (1853). He became affectionately known as Father Tom. He became Titular Bishop of Cisamus in 1888 and 5th Bishop of Hexham and Newcastle in 1889. He also became 12th President of Ushaw College until his death in 1909. He is buried at the college. 4. Frances Octavia Wilkinson born in 1829. She married the Rev. Henry Algernon Baumgartner the son of a Doctor who became vicar of the Parish of Nettlebed in Oxfordshire.

6. Charles Hutton Wilkinson born in 1833 became a Commander in the Royal Navy. He died in 1871 having never married and is buried in Witton-le-Wear cemetery. 7. Edward Abercrombie Wilkinson was born in 1834 who married Edith Rosa DuncombeShafto another of the Shofto dynasty. Edward graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge where he took his B.A. in 1857 and his M.A. in 1860. He was ordained a deacon in 1859 and a priest in 1860. From 1850 to 1866 he was curate at Bamburgh, Northumberland. From 1866-1883 he was Vicar at Tudhoe and then from 1883 until his death in 1900 was vicar of Whitworth. He was the first representative of Spennymoor on the County Council. He was also a County Magistrate for 25 years. 8. Anne Sibella Wilkinson was born in 1837, She married Matthew Charles Woods in 1854. Matthew was Major of the Yeomanry Cavalry and they lived at Holeyn Hall in Wylam, Northumberland.

5. Mary Emmeline Wilkinson born in 1831 who was last seen living at Harperley Hall in 1860.

No doubt a great many more characters were descended from George Hutton Wilkinson. But one thing is for sure. They left a strong mark on our area. They are a family which emphasises Victorian society and Empire. They carried out law and order and taught from a pulpit how to be law abiding.

FREEMASONRY WHAT IS FREEMASONRY?

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF FREEMASONRY?

Freemasonry is one of the oldest and largest fraternal societies in the world. It will provide you with a code of living in today’s community, based on good moral and ethical standards. It is an organisation of men who try to live by the principles of integrity and goodwill which unifies them, regardless of colour, creed or worldly status. It is a non profit making organisation that is involved in supporting charity and service to the community. It will provide you with a common interest where you can meet and enjoy the company of like minded men from all walks of life.

We try to impress upon the minds of our members the principles of personal responsibility and morality, encouraging each member to practice in his daily life the lessons taught through the symbolic ceremonies held within the Lodge. Although these stories and symbols are from times of long ago, we relate their relevance to modern Freemasonry and describe it as a special way of life. Freemasonry also has an important part to play in a world where the only constant is change. It sometimes appears that every known thing in today’s world is changing at an ever increasing and sometimes alarming rate. With our principles, which have survived many changes for over 300 years, our organisation will provide you with a solid foundation upon which to anchor yourself and will encourage you to accept and move with these changes.

WELL DONE WILLINGTON A.F.C. Northern League Division Two side Willington A.F.C today won two categories at the 7th Annual Onion Bag Awards 2016/17. They won Favourite Non-League Ground Visited: “In my mind, it’s a ‘temple’ of north-east football. Quirky, charming, and beautiful” The Onion Bag and also Most Friendliest Club Welcome (North) “The levels of their friendliness held no boundaries. They deserve an OB (Onion Bag) Award and a visit to Willington comes with my very highest recommendation” The Onion Bag. Shaun Cooper also got a special mention “His passion and incurable

optimism for the club shines through so brightly” Club Chairman, Richard Tremewan said: “It’s really fantastic that our volunteers have been recognised in this way. It is great that all of the unpaid hours they put in their spare time hasn’t gone unnoticed. It is the volunteers of non-league clubs like ours that are the heartbeat of the club and without them, we wouldn’t exist. It makes me really proud to be involved with a club like Willington”
