KEEPING IT IN THE FAMILY This April saw the newly refurbished Stephenson’s Market Plaice on South Street, Crook open it’s doors to customers both old and new. Graeme and Paula Stephenson first opened in February 1998 so are currently enjoying their 20th year serving the people of Crook with quality fish and chips. Not only have they completely revamped the downstairs fish and chip shop and created a much larger cooking area they have also opened up a wonderful 30 seat restaurant upstairs, where you can enjoy a very generous portion of fish and chips as well as a range of other foods and
desserts. Of course you can still enjoy your takeaway if you are looking to eat on the go! The restaurant is also fully licensed, every Friday they have a Fizzy Friday where you can get a bottle of Frizzante for only £10 when purchasing a meal. Out & About Magazine chatted with owners Graeme and Paula in the new restaurant, the decor of the restaurant made me feel as if I was in some upmarket harbour town with lots of rustic touches and nods to the sea. Paula mentioned that their family have been frying fish now for 4 generations. Paula’s Dad John Rocks taught them everything they know.

CrookFEST Review Story & images by Karl Utley
The first bank holiday weekend of May is always a big one in Crook, as that’s when CrookFEST is held at Crook AFC’s home ground. Out & About reader Karl Utley gives us his views on this years bumper offering and shares with us some of his fantastic images from the event, Karl is no stranger to the music scene having begun his business career by opening “McCoy’s” music store in Hope Street in the mid 90s. This year saw another great CrookFEST, it was the 5th that I’ve attended having only missed 3 since it began. It’s always great to catch up with people you probably haven’t seen since the last CrookFEST and probably won’t see until the next one. Even that big ball of flames in the sky (AKA the Sun) made a much appreciated appearance after poor weather over some of the past years. This year I saw some fantastic bands, including Ohasis, the Bandits, The Kill & The Scandals to name a few. I was really impressed with Metal Militia (a Metallica tribute band), the bass

player Daniel Genner is a Crook lad and it’s always good to see a local lad doing well. As anyone who knows me knows only too well wherever I go I always manage to pop the camera out and take some photos, not only for myself but to capture and share those moments for others to enjoy. When it first began, CrookFEST was ran over 2 days, Saturday was historically a dance music day, and Sunday the rock day, but unfortunately there is no dance day now (which should be brought back IMHO). I have to say all of the organisation that goes in to organising CrookFEST must be no easy feat and I can only commend the main organiser Marshall Rippon and everyone else who is involved for putting on such a splendid show and as always will be looking forward to next years event. See you all next year!

He has been professional throughout the experience, from the initial contact, to meeting at our venue before the big day to then being there on the day itself. On the day we hardly realised Ritchie was taking the photos and wow what an amazing story of our big day he has delivered. The quality of the photographs, the presentation in its own little wooden memory box, along with the memory stick with so many quality photos on. On Monday 30th April I braved the night by sleeping outside at Durham Cathedral as part of the CEO Sleepout Durham charity event in order to raise money for homelessness and people living in absolute poverty. they are. A lack of social care often ends with people forced to live on the streets, often people with mental health problems or veterans that find it difficult fitting back into civilian life after years away fighting and seeing some of the most horrific things. This is not how these people should be treated. Once I had a cause I was all signed up!
The charity that organised the event is CEO Sleepout who were created to fight homelessness and poverty throughout the UK. Their fight is funded with money raised by business people who sleep outdoors for one night to raise sponsorship from their business contacts and friends. They hold lots of organised events throughout the country as well as here in the North East and are always looking to recruit business leaders, community leaders, owners, managers, execs and anyone who thinks they can raise a significant amount of funds, and who are willing to give up just one night of comfort. When my Dad died in early 2017 I decided that it would be a good idea to try and raise money for various good causes by taking part in an organised charity event once a year. Last year I did a zip line jump from the Tyne Bridge in Newcastle and raised £1,838.92 for Cancer Research UK, so this year I was looking to do something slightly different. Running was definitely out, as with a business to run and a young family to look after I just don’t have the time to train. Then one Saturday night up popped on advert for CEO Sleepout and I thought what a fantastic idea and a great cause. This is 2018 not 1818 so people should not really be homeless in this day and age, but yet 16
Once the big day was here I prepared myself and arrived at Durham Cathedral at about 8pm with some thin exercise mats to sleep on, 2 sleeping bags and a pillow ready for the long night ahead. The weather forecast had already said the temperatures would get down to a cool 2 degrees so it was going to be cold. Once I was in the Cathedral we were told that we would be sleeping in the cloisters, which is an outdoor courtyard area which featured in the first Harry Potter movie. Someone pointed out that the Cloisters hadn’t seen any sun for centuries so that was refreshing to hear. Before we settled down for the night a lady that had been homeless herself stood up and gave a truly inspiring talk about how the charity had helped her turn her life around and got her back into work. It was a sad story, she had been bullied from a young age and through this fell into doing drugs and ended up in £21,000 of debt by the time she was 21. Eventually she found herself homeless on the streets and ht. became a My bed for the nig prostitute for

around 2 years. I couldn’t believe that someone was brave enough to ht. stand up in front My view for the nig of 50 plus strangers and talk about this. She then told us how the charity had helped her get back on her feet and how she was now working as a financial analyst, proof indeed that this whole thing was worth doing. It was about 10pm when I picked the spot where I would be sleeping, I was luckier than most people that do this for real in that I was prepared with 2 sleeping bags, 3 pairs of trousers, 4 tops, plus a hat, scarf and gloves to keep me warm. The first thing that I noticed as I laid down on my bed for the night was how uncomfortable it was lying on a hard stone floor, even though I had a foam mat underneath me I could still feel the hard stone floor rubbing on my hips and back. The next thing that I couldn’t fail to notice was that the Cathedral Bells ring out loud, every 15 minutes, ALL NIGHT! Even though I had lots of layers on you could still feel the cold blasting through all the layers whenever you moved, my face was the only part of me that wasn’t covered and you could certainly feel it as the temperature dropped. I found the hard surface hard to sleep on and struggled to get comfortable enough to drift off to sleep, eventually I must’ve though as I was awoken by a startle at 11:15pm as the Cathedral bells started to ring. Again it took me a while to get comfortable enough to get to sleep in the blistering cold but I managed it until I woke at 3:00am, not sure if it was the cold or the bells that woke me this time. Eventually after struggling to find a comfortable position on the hard stone floor I managed to sleep until 5:30am when I was awoken by the light and the sound of people talking. When I got back to my
car the windscreen was . The next morning covered in ice so we had indeed picked a good night to get a taste for what it is like sleeping rough in the cold. Given the conditions I thought that I had a decent nights sleep but as the following day progressed I began to feel exhausted and parts of me that I didn’t know could ache were aching from lying on a hard surface. That night I was in bed for 8pm, I felt so lucky to be back in my bed. After sleeping out for one night I came to the conclusion that after a week of it, you must find it hard to function properly due to a lack of sleep and must be aching from head to toe from not having a comfortable place to sleep. I myself raised just over £450 from the event but in total the event had raised almost £25,000 at the time of writing. A lot of the money goes to Changing Lives who have a number of facilities across the North East. They run specialist services across the country, designed to help people change their lives for the better. They work with people experiencing hardships that many would struggle to imagine: homelessness, sexual exploitation, life-threatening addictions, mental and physical health problems, long-term unemployment and poverty. They help people to leave behind problems that have previously held them back and get them back on their feet, living independently, safely and successfully in their community and back into work.
