The Forgotten Scout Story by Aaron Cowen
Since I write a lot of historical articles, I thought I would take the opportunity, to remember a man, I never met, my Grandfather. Robert “Bobby” Hodges was born in Horden, County Durham on 2nd December 1927 (an only child!) to Crook born Robert “Bob” Hodges (one of 16 children!) and Jane Hodges (nee Laing). The family were not long at Horden before moving to rented
Robert “Bob” Hodges & Jane Hodges (nee Laing)
accommodation at Constantine Farm near North Bitchburn and then onto Bridge Street, Howden-le-Wear. The young Bobby was raised a Catholic and the family could not be any closer to the Catholic Church when they lived at No. 35 Church Hill, Crook from about the age of 6 years old. Being so close to the church meant that he was able to get to the school to ring the school bell which hangs on the gable wall of the old St Cuthberts School. (Must be something about bells in our family!) Some of you may have seen the old Crook Cine Film which was filmed in 1933 (Available on Youtube – Search “Crook Cine Film”). No doubt Bobby was one of the children in the playground in this old film footage along with school friend Aussie McCabe. I know very little of his childhood. At the age of 6 years old he won a fancy dress competition as a chimney sweep at Wheatbottom Carnival. 8
He can be seen in the photo here with the old Wheatbottom pub in the background. Bobby is at the bottom of the photo in black. He would often go on the bus to Durham with his grandmother Catherine Hodges (nee Martin) where he would wander around the Indoor Market while his Gran would visit the Market Tavern. He was too young to fight in the war, however he did not escape his 2 years National Service. He was posted to India with the RAF as a nurse in 1946. Something he wished he had kept up in later life. There he learnt to swim in a rather unconventional way.
They decided to tease some of the local Baboons who gave chase. The only way to escape was across a lake. While on service there he witnessed the Admiral Lord Mountbatten inspect the troops.

Many Crook lads would have at sometime been in the scouts. However Crook always forgets the small Scout Group linked to St. Cuthberts Church. The 5th Crook 1st Scout Troup was first registered in 1943 by James “Jimmy” Galbraith. However my grandfather, after completing his National Service took over as Scoutmaster in 1949 until 1957. “He would tell us ghost stories which would frighten us so much we were scared to walk home – he always knew if someone was having a sneaky tab in the tent and would come in and confiscate them from us and have them for himself” said Alan Thompson. Incidently Woodbine cigarettes was his favourite. Bobby took the below group of scouts to Ireland (with the addition of Joseph Keogan), which he paid for out of his own pocket. “Bobby was a lovely man. The lreland trip was a train from Durham to Hollyhead, then ferry to Dun Leoghare, then a train to the campsite in the Vale of Avoca in County Wicklow. We should of stayed two weeks but got rained off, so came home after ten days” said Phil Clark.
He married Catherine Bigley in 1953 at St. Cuthberts Church and had five children, Robert, Mary, Ann, Ruth and John. I won’t include a photo as this may be my last editorial if I did so. Bobby worked in a few places but most notably in a foundry where he cast his own lead soldiers and painted them for his eldest son. He was always making something, including props for the Catholic school stage productions. If asked what was he doing by one of his children, his response would be building “wigwams for ducks!”. He was also the Projectionist at the Top House Pictures in the late 60s. He could play the harmonica, the piano accordion and the organ although unable to read music, played completely by ear. He enjoyed brass band music. Sadly he died at a young age on 10th February 1972 aged just 44 years. He left behind his wife and 5 children, the youngest only 5 years old, but all have their tales to tell of him and 45 years later is still missed by those who knew him. Back row left to right: John Lally, Scoutmaster Bobby Hodges, Brian Hedley, Phil Clark, Jim Hedley, Senior Scout Ted Ellis. Front row left to right: Bobby Caile, Jack McGrath, Joe Hayton, Jim Gayson.

Spotlight on The Tow Law Lunch Club. This month we take a look at the Tow Law Lunch Club which aims to get the over 60s out of the house and socialising. For those that don’t know, what is The Tow Law Lunch Club? Our Lunch Club is a monthly service aimed at the over 60s where we meet to enjoy a 2 course lunch with organised activities and entertainment. It’s a chance for people to chat and meet with friends old and new. When and why was The Lunch Club setup? The Lunch Club was started in June last year after months of research and fundraising. We identified a need for the service through our own personal experiences and backed this up by holding coffee mornings and asking if people thought it was a good idea. Social isolation in the age group we are aiming for is a major problem in this area. Alongside the Lunch Club we run a monthly drop in from 10am till 12pm. We offer unlimited tea, coffee and biscuits for £1 and have also recently started doing a book swap at these sessions. Everyone is welcome to these and its a great way to find out more about what we do and what events we have planned. There is a great atmosphere and we have juice for the kids too if any come. You’ve recently been planning some events for the Lunch Club can you tell us about those? We have some great events planned for 2017 both to provide fun activities for the community and if we are lucky to raise some funds for The Lunch Club. On March 19th we
12
have a huge spring fair and have worked very hard to organise over 40 stalls offering a wide range of products. The kids will have a great day as we have face painting, games, crafts and a very special interactive story telling session from Step into Storyland (from 11.30am till 1.30pm). We will also be serving hot beef sandwiches, hotdogs, cakes and drinks. On April 9th we will be holding our Children’s Easter Party. After the success of last years Easter Afternoon tea we are holding it in a bigger venue this time to allow more children to attend. This year we are trying something different with an indoor teddy bears picnic and will have our usual
Don’t forget to quote Out & About Magazine when responding to adverts.
Easter themed games, egg hunt and Easter bonnet competition. In November we are having a night of Ska. We have been lucky enough to have the opportunity for a band called the Skapones to perform for us in Alex Bar, Tow Law. They have supported bands like Bad Manners and The Lambrettas and also played with members of The Specials and The Selecter. They play at major UK festivals so we are very lucky to have them. Tickets are £6. We will be holding a raffle on the night to raise funds and will be offering some great prizes. We have many more events to come in the year ahead. For anyone that would be interested in attending the Lunch Club when and where is it? Lunch Club runs on the last Wednesday of the month and must be booked in advance. The contact details are Emma Hindmoor 07867 697 612 and Erica Thorpe 07825 663 325, email us on thelunchclubtowlaw@hotmail.com or via our Facebook page www.facebook.com/ Towlawlunchclub. It costs £4 for a 2 course lunch with an organised activity. What do people think? “Thanks for everything today. My parents really had a good day. They loved the meal and thoroughly enjoyed the company. Thanks a million.” Anne Reed. “Nice lunch good company, waited on hand and foot, what more do you want.” Winifred Hird. Are you a talented musician, artist or worthy charity that would benefit from some publicity? Do you want to feature in the next edition of Out & About magazine?
