The dangers of open water The family of teenager Cameron Gosling who died after jumping in a river last summer are launching a campaign to try and get water safety on the national curriculum. Cameron from Crook, was only 14 when he jumped off rocks into the River Wear in July 2015 and died after suffering a shock reaction to the cold water. His family are urging others to sign a petition to try and get water safety added to the national curriculum and taught throughout school. As well as this they have also launched Campaigning for Cam which is to raise awareness about the risks of drowning and the effects cold water can have on the body. Cameron’s Mam Fiona said: “People understand that water is dangerous but I don’t think they understand the real dangers of water shock. People say it should be up to parents but I don’t think parents understand it either. We’re trying to get that out there and get it out to as many people as possible. I know kids are still going to go down to the river so we want them to know the dangers.”

Cameron had gone swimming with his friends near Paradise Park in Witton Park and jumped into the Wear from rocks beside the river. He got into trouble immediately and despite attempts by his friends to rescue him he was swept away, prompting a river search with a local dive team. Fiona said: “On that day Cameron was the only one that hadn’t acclimatised at all. Everyone else had put their feet in or paddled up to their knees so their bodies were ready. He hadn’t touched it so when he jumped in he went into shock. Kids need to know they have to prepare their bodies for going in the river. Every now and again I go down there to put flowers down and there are kids as young as nine still hanging around near the river and a simple slip could do it.” To sign the petition visit www.petition.parliament.uk/petitions/124748

Five issues have been identified as key to water safety. Dubbed the ‘fatal five’ they are: 1. Cold water shock - Low water temperature can numb limbs and claim lives.

3. Currents or water conditions - Includes flooding, unknown depths, ice and riptides.

2. Dangers beneath the water surface There may be hazards under the water that could trap you such as machinery, shopping trolleys, dead branches, fish hooks or fishing line. Pollution from rat urine can cause Weil’s disease and parasites is also a problem.

4. Alcohol consumption - Never ever swim if you have consumed alcohol. 5. Swimming competency - Never assume because you can swim in a pool that you can deal with the challenges of open water swimming. Only swim in safe areas or where there is supervision or a lifeguard.

Crook’s got talent Natural High, a Crook based theatre group is helping to transform young people’s lives in the area, and are looking for new members to make sure that the group continues to help local children. The group welcomes children from the age of seven right through to young adults, and is also open to those with learning difficulties. Some of the youngsters in the group have experienced difficult childhoods, while some have been bullied, both of which have resulted in them having low self-esteem or very little self-confidence.

Nathan commented: “I was bullied at school, but Natural High has allowed me to be myself. I can be the person I want to be.” 12 year old Emma didn’t know what she wanted to do when she was older, but since joining Natural High it has given her a focus and a dream of working towards being an

Natural High was formed in 2000 to give children from the local areas the opportunity to develop and harness their creative ambitions. They achieve this by working alongside volunteers specialised in music, dance and drama and also provide a place where children can be themselves and not worry about what other think. One thing that the members of Natural High all agree on is that belonging to the group has resulted in them growing in confidence in all areas of their lives.

actor in London’s West End. Emma said: “One of the great things about being part of Natural High is it enables me to learn lots of new performance skills, something which I’d never done before.” The group do not hold auditions which ensures every child has a part in their productions no matter what their ability. Their ethos is that ‘every child matters’, this attitude certainly helps their members to bloom with confidence.

Natural High member Nathan, aged 14, lost his dad when he was only six years old. When he joined Natural High in 2010 he was very shy, but the leaders helped him to gain confidence. 12

In the past the group have preformed many shows including, Mary Poppins, Joseph, The Wizard of Oz plus lots of their own productions. The shows give the children the experience of performing in front of an audience and working alongside theatre professionals.

Local musicians also offer their time and expertise for free. This gives the children access to instruments which they would otherwise not have opportunity to use. The most famous ex member of Natural High is West End star Matthew Gent, who has performed in Les Misérables and Phantom of the Opera. Most recently he appeared as the At the moment they are working towards their summer show titled ‘Round the World’ – which highlights different styles of music and dance from around the world.

vocalist on the tour of ‘The Last Tango’ with Vincent Simone and Flavia Cacace, stars of Strictly Come Dancing. Being a member of the group has given 16 year old Daniel so much more and taught him important life skills. He has been a member for six years and is working towards being a leader himself. “It has opened up lots of opportunities and is giving me great experience for my CV. I’ve been able to gain so much confidence and I’m making my family proud” commented Daniel.

Maureen Aspey, one of the leaders of Natural High, said: “Seeing the effect that Natural High is having on the lives of the children we work with is incredibly humbling. To see children who barely said a word when they first joined, to then perform in front of proud family and friends is fantastic and long may it continue. That’s why we want to encourage more children to join us.” Natural High meet every Friday evening at St. Andrew’s Church, Dawson Street, Crook, County Durham DL15 8NH from 6 - 8pm during term time. If you are interested in joining call Maureen Aspey on 07811 166 763 for more information.

A Blast from the Past Story by Aaron Cowen

Our area grew largely due to the excavation of coal. Coal mining was a very dangerous job and accidents occurred regularly. On the night of 23rd June 1934 a fatal shot-firing accident occurred at Roddymoor Colliery. Louis Jewell who was 34 years of age and of High Grahamsley, Crook was killed. Harry Makinson, 26, a coal cutter attendant from Wood Houses, Crook and Jake Fothergill, 50, a stone man from Wheatbottom Crook were also injured. Jewell who was a fully authorized shot-firer, charged a bottom canch shot at the face of the tailgate of a longwall conveyor face. After stemming the shot-hole he coupled the detonator leads to what he thought were the bare ends of the shot-firing cable. As soon as the connections were made the shot exploded. Jewell sustained fatal injuries, three other workmen who were leaving to take shelter were also injured. It was found that Jewell had inadvertently coupled the detonator leads to the bare ends of the face conveyor signalling cable, a very similar cable to the shot-firing cable, which had been disconnected from the face signalling wires and laid back into the tailgate to prevent damage.

6.5 volts. The company at once introduced a three-core cab-tyre sheathed cable for signalling purposes. This new cable was considerably larger in diameter and totally different in construction from the ordinary shot-firing cable. The difference between the two types of cables was so apparent that the likelihood of a similar accident occurring in the future was very remote.

The conveyor signalling cable was connected with a battery of five Leclanche cells giving

Councillor’s Corner with Councillor John Hart

This month’s Councillor’s Corner is about cleaning up our streets from the scourge of dog poo. One of the best things about being councillor is representing so many different communities, all with their own unique personality. But sadly they share some of the same problems. One of those issues is speeding motorists – which we’ll talk about next time – another is dog poo. I honestly can’t believe some people don’t have enough pride in their community or respect for their neighbours to clean up after their pets. So I organised our area’s first ever anti-dog poo campaign, with a series of events and activities in Tow Law, Billy Row, Sunniside, Roddymoor and Stanley Crook persuading dog owners to pick up their dogs’ mess and dispose of it correctly. High intensity patrols saw 58 people spoken to about properly picking up after their pets. 12 dog owners seen cleaning up after their dogs were entered into a prize draw, won by Mr Chapman from Tow Law and his dog Honey. 36 people also signed up to become Green Dog Walkers, volunteering to encourage responsible dog ownership in our communities. Education is key to tackling this problem, and myself and Civic Pride officers (and the council’s responsible dog ownership mascot Scoop the Dog!) visited our four primary schools and taught 440 pupils about how to look after a dog properly. The children also designed posters encouraging people to pick up after their pets 16

and a picture by Libby Thompson from Peases West Primary has now been made into stickers and placed on bins around the area. If you’ve seen them I’m sure you’ll agree they look absolutely brilliant. Dog fouling spoils our streets and can cause serious health risks, particularly to children. It’s also illegal and offenders face fines of £1000. If there is a problem where you live, or you see someone failing to clean up their dog’s mess – let me know. It’s a real help if you can tell me dates and times and give a description of the dog and owners. All reports will be dealt with in confidence. Together, we can tackle this. You can get me any time on 03000 268 719, john.hart@durham.gov.uk and @JohnHartrPR on Twitter.
