Reader’s Views Parking Misery Being a retired police officer having lived in Crook for the past ten years and seen other towns in the country lose their life-blood local businesses. I believe addressing the current car parking situation is the way to preserving Crook’s rich past, present and future with local traders continuing to flourish. To that end the car park situated behind the Hope Street Surgery which serves both surgery and shops should have free parking 2 hours machines installed to compliment the half hour parking in Hope Street which would be enforced by parking wardens; but with designated long term bays for businesses without rear access parking. This will discourage the all day parking and taking up of valuable shopper/surgery spaces which is taking trade away from upper Hope Street. This is a particular problem on Tuesday’s when the Market takes over the Market Place (what used to happen was the Co-Op car park took the brunt of it to the detriment of shoppers.
A State of Disrepair I find it so sad driving past Helme Park Hall every morning and seeing it in such a dishevelled and dilapidated state. The only future that I can see for this lovely old building is for it to be flattened and the land be used to build new houses on. Such a shame as this was one of my favourite venues for weddings and parties over the years. In more recent times it was a little like Fawlty Tours but it always remained a charming quirky place to me. Hopefully someone will see the potential in it and give it the much needed TLC that it has needed for years but for a whopping 1.2 million I can’t see that happening. David Allen, Sunniside
New Supermarket
There is more than enough unused grassland off Glenholme Drive to make a free long term carpark on the lines of the attached image the cost of which would be offset of the council not having to mow/maintain the grassed area. This need is going to be made prevalent when the new Lidl and Aldi stores open which will have automatic number plate cameras and free parking for 90 minutes.
Am I the only one in Crook who is not looking forward to the new Lidl store opening? I’ve always been a supporter of small quality local traders much like the old days when I was young and you could walk up Hope Street and get your shopping from a variety of different shops, wet fish, butchers, bakers and even a tea shop, the list was endless. Because of this I’ve always prefered to get my shopping from different shops rather than one large supermarket. Let’s hope it brings more people into Crook rather than damages what’s already there.

Investigating Harperley Hall Story by Aaron Cowen
This month we investigate some of the vast history of Harperley Hall. Harperley meaning Harpers clearing is a very ancient place.
Harperley Hall
Harperley Park itself belonged to the Conyers family of Sockburn during the times of Bishop Richard de Bury (1333-1345) and Bishop Thomas Hatfield (1345-1381). In the time of Bishop William James (1606-1617) George Conyers obtained a licence to alienate the manor to Marmaduke Tunstall and John Athy. Low Harperley Farmhouse was the original Manor House for Harperley Park and therefore the first Harperley Hall as it was in fact originally known. It is a Grade II* Listed Building.
Low Harperley Farmhouse
The building reflects 16th Century and 17th Century construction probably incorporating an earlier building. It has had 18th century alterations and additions. Low Harperley Hall was built of stone with two stories with attics and ancient beams, and was provided with mullioned windows. On the north side above the door is inscribed “SC:MDC., 1765” (This likely refers to Sheldon Cradock with MDC referring to Marmaduke and Dorothy Cradock). Beneath this “JCJ 1949” has been 10
added, referring to Joseph Craig Johnson. The Johnson family had the farm for at least 3 generations until the death of Charlie Johnson in 1998. On the south side, also above the door “S.C., 1762” is inscribed; (Which may refer to the death of Sheldon Cradock) Over a window is a shield of the Cradock arms. A subterranean passage leads from the room on the west side of the garden door on the south towards the river. It is blocked a few yards from the front of the house. There was and perhaps still is a secret chamber in the chimney on the western gable on the first floor of the house. Perhaps this was a priest hole? The estate would seem to have passed about 1760 to the Cradocks of Gainford. Marmaduke Cradock built the older portion of the present Low Harperley Hall. His Great-Grandfather, Richard had purchased the tithes of Harperley from Sir Joseph Cradock in 1673 who seems to have himself acquired Harperley through his marriage to Jane Maxton. Her father was the Rev. Anthony Maxton who was Prebendary of the 8th stall at Durham and Rector of Wolsingham. Maxton buried the Cathedral plate in his garden at Harperley around about the time the Scottish Army

rebelled against King Charles I for trying to force them to accept Bishops. The Army used the cathedral as a barracks. One wonders if Maxton remembered to dig it back up again since he died circa 1642. George Hutton Wilkinson He was interred at Wolsingham Church. It is also interesting to note that he would have been Princess Diana’s 11th Great Grandfather. Harperley was again sold to William Cradock of Gainford in about 1690.
Walsham-leWillows, Suffolk. Wilkinson was the Chairman of the North Eastern Railway company and in 1847 had his own private station built on the Railway line at Harperley. Today only the Colonel Stobart and his wife platform remains on the current Weardale line. The property remained in Wilkinson’s possession until his granddaughter, Frances Dorothea, who inherited the estate, was succeeded by her eldest son, Colonel George Herbert Stobart, who in the 1930s quit the mansion and took up residence at nearby Helm Park near Tow Law. In 1939 he allowed the hall to be used to billet evacuee children from Jarrow Secondary School. At the time the hall was gas lit. Today the Hall is a Police training establishment as it has been since 1946.
Harperley Station
On 21st November 1786, Harperley Park was acquired by George Pearson, clerk of the peace of the County Palatine of Durham. After devoting much time and ability to developing the estate he died in 1798. Harperley Hall is a Grade II Listed Building and the building record suggests it was built for Marmaduke Cradock. However I feel that it this was unlikely and that it was more likely built by George Pearson. George’s daughter Elizabeth Jane Pearson married George Hutton Wilkinson, of
Reverting back to Low Harperley, the land was used during the First World War to house German POWS at that time in tents. It wasn’t until much later the well known Harperley POW Camp came into being. The Farm building was also severely damaged by lightening on 5th July 1939 demolishing a chimney stack and leaving a big hole in the roof and stopping the farmers watch and Grandfather clock from ticking. In the next issue Aaron looks at The Wilkinson Family of Harperley Hall.
Aaron is a keen amateur historian and one of the admins of the Crook Town and District History Group Facebook group, he is also Chairman of the Empire Electric Palace group. Don’t forget to quote Out & About Magazine when responding to adverts.

Community news Success for under 8s Rugby
the Westoe Rugby Festival. A special mention to Phil for keeping time and informing me when it was half time and full time. Freddie for keeping score and notes on the match. Tom for giving direction to the Bishop tags. Well done boys and thank you for your help. A massive thanks to Sherwoods for sponsoring us. Coach Russ.
Charity zip line The under 8s tags from Bishop Auckland Rugby Club enjoyed a festival at Westoe RFU Club. They played 3 teams Westoe, Darlington, and Barbarians. It was a fantastic day, all Bishop tags played well, their defence was outstanding and held strong. Working on a 6 Tag turn over they stopped the opposition from making tries by gaining the ball. Using great team work they passed the ball and gained try after try. All 5 tags managed to get tries. Tags from all sides enjoyed the day and the hospitality including hot dogs from Westoe RFU. The Mams where surprised and delighted to receive gifts of daffodils donated by Lidl Bishop Auckland and cakes donated by Greggs of Tow Law. The tags are based at Bishop Auckland Rugby Club and train/play on Sunday mornings at 10.30am. A big thank you to all of the tags
On Sunday 2nd April I conquered my fear of heights by zip lining off the side of the Tyne Bridge and over the River Tyne in memory of my Dad, John Coatsworth. The jump raised £1,838.92 for Cancer Research UK so was well worth the worry as I was sat on the railings of the brdge looking down at the Sunday Market and River Tyne down below. Funnily enough the worst part of the whole thing was actually climbing the ladder which is madness as that’s only a small part when you are jumping from a bridge.
