Spotlight on the Save the Empire Pantomime. This month we shine the spotlight on the Save the Empire pantomime that is running again after last years success. Tell us a little bit about this years Panto? There was a university lecturer who worked at the Archway Campus of Middlesex University. At lunch he used to look at the statue of Dick Whittington and his cat on Highgate Hill dreaming of moving ‘up north’. That academic ignored the calls to ‘turn again’ and moved to Durham, becoming a Trustee of Empire Electric Palace Theatre. Now he’s there, he has booked TaleGate Theatre Productions to bring Dick Whittington up the A1 to the Wear Valley for this years Pantomime – will Dick ‘turn again’ for the City of London or will he make it to the Wear Valley? Following the amazing panto in 2016 we are REALLY lucky looking forward to seeing James and the other TaleGate Theatre performers back in Crook. They are a REALLY impressive touring theatre company and trying to get a booking is near impossible. The Empire group is excited that TaleGate are happy to come back to us and bring us Christmas panto FUN.
For many of us panto is our first memory of theatre – LIVE THEATRE. Theatre is excitement, participation (oh no it isn’t….oh YES IT IS!) and the chance to smile regardless of your age. Panto is the chance to relive youth and have fun. Panto is the chance to sing along and make memories. This panto is based on the life of Richard Whittington. The story is said to be the only panto based on real people and it is an English tale. The panto follows the old pattern of ‘Poor boy makes good and gets what he deserves’ (in this case he gets to be Lord Mayor of London)….to tell more would destroy the excitement which is to come… “oh no it wouldn’t….oh YES IT WOULD!” Dick Whittington is a really old play dating back to the early 1600’s. There are records of the play being performed at Southwark Fair in 1731 and the first pantomime version is said to have been in 1814 with the Clown Joseph Grimaldi playing the Dame. Over the years there have been many famous people in Dick Whittington pantomimes, George Formby, Tommy Steele, Mary Hopkin, Cannon & Ball to name but a few. Once again the Empire Electric Palace Theatre brings REAL family pantomime fun for a fraction of what you will pay elsewhere. We hope you fill the venues and raise a lot of smiles!

season in 2018 BUT this all depends on local people helping THEIR theatre grow.
At the Empire you can see James and Phillip here in Crook with adult tickets at £6, The project desperately needs local people to support it, there are members in Auckland New under 14’s £4 and family tickets (2+2) only Zealand but they find it difficult to come just for £14. the evening! More than anything we need to credit and debit cards and there is no be able to demonstrate that the people of the booking fee. We have 2 performances – area want the Empire and that means we need Crook on Friday 8th December at 6.30pm people to join the Empire project. Membership is and Wolsingham on Saturday 9th available on line at www.panto.eep-crook.com December at 3pm or you could travel to or by calling 01388 240 024. the London Palladium where you could you’d be able to see Julian Clary and Nigel Whatever people can do will help – could YOU be Havers in Dick Whittington …. but it would an usher, an ice-cream salesperson, a chair cost you upwards of £27.50 a seat (the straightener….old, young, middle-aged whatever cheap seats at £15 are all sold!). YOUR EMPIRE NEEDS YOU!! Call us on 01388 240 024 or email us at info@eep-crook.org Visit www.eep-crook.com & www.panto.eep-crook.com
How is the Save the Empire project going? We have been VERY lucky in getting the support of the Co-op Group over the past 6 months and this has enabled us to get this years panto at a really low, subsidised, price. The big news is that the Co-op members have donated £1400 to the Empire.... amazing....! As well as the panto we will be using the Co-op money to finalise our business plans and we also hope to have a film

Brancepeth Castle - the last 500 years Story by Aaron Cowen
This month I’m continuing looking at the much overlooked Brancepeth Castle, this time focusing on the last 500 years of it’s history. In 1633 Brancepeth Castle was sold on to Ralph Cole of Newcastle. His Grandson Ralph Cole MP then sold the property on 9th April 1701 to Sir Henry Belaysyse (1648-1717) who was MP of Durham. Sir Henry’s son William then inherited the castle in 1717. No castle is complete without its own ghost. Brancepeth has just that, known as the White Lady. William Belaysyse’s daughter Bridget was madly in love with Robert Shafto. Robert’s brother Thomas, was the rector at Brancepeth at the time. The Shafto Robert Shafto family lived 2 miles away at Whitworth Hall. Robert Shafto became immortalised in the nursery Rhyme, “Bonny Bobby Shafto”. The Rhyme seems to have had verses added through the years for different reasons. However the earliest published version of the rhyme in 1805 read: “Bobby Shafto’s gone to sea, Silver buckles at his knee He’ll come back and marry me Bonny Bobby Shafto 12
Bobby Shafto’s bright and fair Panning out his yellow hair He’s my love for evermore Bonny Bobby Shafto.” In 1768 Bobby Shafto stood down as MP at the general election but stood again 6 years later. There is no evidence that he ever went to sea, and that may be the story he gave poor Bridget in order to visit another woman. In 1774 he went and married Ann Duncombe of Duncombe Park in Yorkshire. Ann was a better prospect for Robert due to her wealth being greater than Bridget’s. However Robert sharp spent all the money from Ann’s estate so Bridget probably had a lucky escape. Even so, Bridget was said to have died of a broken heart 2 weeks after the marriage. This was not true however as her will was read out the week prior to the marriage, and she likely died from Pulmonary Tuberculosis. Bridget’s ghostly figure is said to stand on the castle walls looking out towards Whitworth Hall, hoping for her Bonny Bobby Shafto to return to of course, marry her. The castle on Bridget’s death was left to her relation the Earl Fauconberg and subsequently sold to John Tempest who sold it to William Russell Esq. for £75,000 at the end of the eighteenth century. William Russell of Newbottle was a Sunderland Banker, coal owner and one of the richest and most powerful men in the North. He was one of the “Grand Allies” a cartel of coal barons who dominated the

eighteenth century coal trade.
The Staircase.
William’s son Matthew, MP for Saltash practically rebuilt Brancepeth Castle beginning in 1817. Russell spent £80,000 a year over several years employing labourers from Brandon working under a Scottish Architect named John Paterson. Matthew was married to Elizabeth Tennyson, Aunt of Lord Tennyson a famous poet who reputedly, after a visit to Brancepeth composed “Come into the Garden Maude” in 1857. The castle then passed to Matthew’s son William, and then passed to his sister Emma Maria in 1828. Emma married the heir to Viscount Boyne and adopted the name Hamilton-Russell. They remained there until the 1920s, until they simply could no longer afford the upkeep. During World War I, part of the castle was used as a convalescent hospital for soldiers from Newcastle General Hospital. After the war it became the headquarters of the Durham Light Infantry. The land comprised a large
military camp and over 100 huts. The DLI disbanded in the 1960s and several uses were found, but the castle was struggling to find a permanent owner. In the 1970s it was rumoured that Telly Savalas famous for his role as Kojak, was interested in buying the castle. The castle was eventually purchased by London publisher Margaret Dobson who moved to Brancepeth in 1978. Margaret died in 2014 aged 86.

“Now adrift in the wake of this glorious slaughter. He’d seen many a soul cleansed in filthy water. Seen godless men reach out for the bible. As lead tore the flesh from friend and rival. Soon home to the joy and celebration of kin. Drunken slaps on the back at a favourite inn. But heavy in his pocket lies a small piece of card. And the note written on it will break a mothers heart.”
