The story of Will Stones Story by Aaron Cowen

Until recent years, one local man’s name fell into obscurity. On 18th January 1917 Lance Sergeant Joseph William Stones known affectionately as Will was shot for Cowardice. Like many service men even his family were ashamed of him and so they rarely mentioned his name. It was not until his Great-Nephew, Tom Stones was doing his family tree that his name was rediscovered. Tom became a prominent figure in the campaign for a Royal Pardon for Stones and the other servicemen executed for cowardice. Joseph Stones was born in Lance Sergeant Joseph William Stones 1890 at Jobs Hill, Crook and was the husband of Elizabeth Edith Stones. He had 3 daughters. He was a coal miner and in 1914 did not meet the height requirements of 5’ 3” and so was unable to join up. He was 5’ 2”. Later that year however this height restriction was reduced to 5 feet and so called “Bantam” Battallions were set up. In January 1915 the 19th (Bantam) Battalion Durham Light Infantry was formed. Stones now meeting the height requirements enlisted with this Battalion in West Hartlepool. They firstly went to Cocken Hall with 1000 men. In June, the 19th Battalion moved onto Masham, North Yorkshire as part of the 106th Brigade of the newly formed 35th Division. Training was completed on Salisbury Plain before 19 DLI sailed from Southampton on 31st January 1916. However, on 11th February, before the Bantams entered the trenches near Neuve Chapelle for the first time, the battalion along with the rest of 106 Brigade was

6

inspected by Lord Kitchener. On 1st July 1916, the 19th Battalion moved south by rail to join the Somme battle in the trenches near Longueval. The Bantams did little fighting though as the battalion were ordered to dig new communication and reserve trenches. Never-ending shell fire, however, caused many casualties. At the end of August 1916, the 35th Division, including the Durham Bantams, left the Somme for the front at Arras. The daily shelling and gas reduced the battalion’s numbers, and too many of the replacement Bantams from home were physically unfit for front line duty. Then, on 26th November, a German raiding party attacked the front line at Arras held by the 19th Battalion. In the aftermath of the raid, seven Durham Bantams were court martialled. Three were executed. Stones was one of them. However as for Stones himself it did not take him long to move up the ranks, being promoted to Corporal and then to Lance Sergeant. His Character was considered to be very good. Accused? At about 2am on 26th November 1916, as the Durham Bantams were holding part of the British front line near Arras, Lieutenant James Munday and Sergeant Stones were attacked by German raiders on the edge of King’s Crater (A huge depression caused by an underground detonation), and Lieutenant Munday was mortally wounded by revolver fire. The Lieutenant ordered Stones to go for help but as he was unable to fire his rifle because the safety catch was on and the cover was over the breech, he jammed it across the trench to slow down the advancing German soldiers. Sergeant Stones then left his wounded officer and was later stopped behind the front line trenches by

Don’t forget to quote Out & About Magazine when responding to adverts.

military police, who asked him where he was going and what had happened to his rifle. Meanwhile, in the dark and confusion, though the German raiders had not pressed home their attack, other Bantams led by Lance Corporals Peter Goggins and John McDonald abandoned their front line trench. These men were also stopped behind the front line by military police, who found that neither Lance Corporal was carrying a rifle. On Christmas Eve 1916, Joseph Stones was tried by court martial for “shamefully casting away his arms in the presence of the enemy”, whilst Peter Goggins and John McDonald were tried for leaving their posts without orders from a superior officer. All three were sentenced to death. In spite of Mundy’s orders, and a statement from his commanding officer that, “He is the last man I would have thought capable of any cowardly action.” Stones was convicted of “shamefully casting away his rifle” in the face of the enemy, and sentenced to death. Brigadier-General H O’Donnell upheld his conviction, in spite of his doubts about the quality of the evidence presented. An eye-witness account of the executions of Peter Goggins, John McDonald and Joseph Stones, 18 January 1917, Rollencourt, France. “Three stakes a few yards apart and a ring of sentries around the woodland to keep the curious away. A moto ambulance arrives conveying the doomed men. Manacled and blindfolded they are helped out and tied up to the stakes. Over each man’s heart is placed an envelope. At the sign of command the firing parties, twelve to each, align their rifles on the envelopes. The officer in charge holds his stick aloft and as it falls thirty-six bullets usher the souls of three Kitchener’s men to the great unknown. As a military prisoner I helped clear up the traces of that triple murder. I took the posts down… I helped carry those bodies towards their last resting place; I collected all the blood-soaked straw and burnt it. Acting on

police instructions I took all their belongings from the dead men’s tunics (discarded before being shot). A few letters, a pipe, some fags, a photo. I could tell you of the silence of the military police after reading one letter from a little girl to ‘Dear Daddy’, of the chaplain’s confession that braver men he had never met than those three men he prayed with just before the fatal dawn. I could take you to the graves of the murdered.” From ‘Shootings at Dawn’ by Ernest Thurtle, Daily Herald, 1925. During the First World War, over 3,000 British soldiers were sentenced to death, though most of these sentences were subsequently commuted to imprisonment, which were then suspended. Seventy of these men were from the DLI. Seven of these DLI soldiers were ‘Shot at Dawn’. Joseph Stones was 27 years old at the time and was buried at St. Pol Communal Cemetery Extension, France, in the care of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. In 1997, after being pardoned his name was added to Crook Cenotaph. As Joseph Stones had been executed, no campaign medals were sent to his widow, who was informed in February 1917 that she was not eligible for a widow’s pension. THE EMPIRE ELECTRIC PALACE GROUP will be showing a film by Lonely Tower Film and Media for Wessington U3A War Memorials Group and funded by the Heritage Lottery on 21st November 2016 at 7.30pm at the RAFA “Spitfire” Club in Crook entitled “The Wear at War” which describes Stones Story along with other local men and women from WWI. A further showing by another group will be on 25th November 2016 at 7.30pm at Howden-le-Wear Community House.

What’s on at The Chyrelle Addams Cancer Support Trust?

Patricia (Trish) is a singer and has proformed all over the world. When she sings, she uses the stage name Chyrelle Addams. Trish was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007 and vowed to fight it with all her heart. She raises funds by organising events with fellow entertainers and volunteers to help her in her fight against Cancer. She founded the charity in 2007 to help other cancer patients.

Monday is craft day which includes knitting, card making and cake decorating. £5 per person includes tea, coffee, biscuits and materials.

About the Chyrelle Addams Cancer Support Trust

On Fridays the hair & beauty students from Bishop Auckland College provide hair (hair put ups) and nail treatments for £5 each.

We also run complementary therapies including reflexogy. This service is open to the general public but is provided free of charge to cancer patients. On Tuesdays we run meditation & mindfulness sessions which are provided free of charge but a donation is welcome. Monday & Thursday is health & wellbeing day where you can pop along for games and a slice of cake.

The Chyrelle Addams Cancer Support Trust supports anyone who has been affected by a diagnosis of cancer. They recieve no goverement funding and rely solely on donations and fundraising. Sales from their charity shop located in the Royal Corner (Above Robinson’s Estate agents) helps to raise money for the charity so any donations are greatfully recieved, they are unable to accept any electrical items. The aim of the charity is to support those that have developed the horrible disease with the provision of equipent and facilities for cancer patients which would not otherwise be provided by statutory means to hospitals in the North of England. The trust provides equipment for Cancer wards, holistic health treatments, hair & beauty treatments, advice and a holiday home. For further details call 01388 205 157 or 07425 139 223. 18

“Now adrift in the wake of this glorious slaughter. He’d seen many a soul cleansed in filthy water. Seen godless men reach out for the bible. As lead tore the flesh from friend and rival. Soon home to the joy and celebration of kin. Drunken slaps on the back at a favourite inn. But heavy in his pocket lies a small piece of card. And the note written on it will break a mothers heart.”
