Spotlight on the Royal British Legion. This month we shine the spotlight on the Willington, Crook & District branch of the Royal British Legion. Obviously everyone associates the British Legion with poppies near to Remembrance Sunday, what sort of activities do you do throughout the rest of the year? The British Legion branches and the Poppy Appeal are two separate parts although we do support each other an
Flanders Fields’. After the First World War, the poppy was adopted as a symbol of Remembrance. Remembrance is part of modern British life, culture and heritage. It becomes a particular feature of the public calendar each year when public, private, formal and informal Remembrance events take place throughout the UK.
Although the main Poppy event is during the two weeks before remembrance Sunday, fundraising and promotion goes on all year round for both the British Legion their Branches and the Poppy Appeal.
The money raised from the Poppy Appeal supports serving personnel, veterans and their families but we also help with counselling, pensions, legal and financial support for beneficiaries.
As we’ve previously mentioned it could you tell anyone that’s been living in a cave for the last 100 years exactly what the poppy symbolises and what does the money raised from these help.
Some of the projects that we support:
In the spring of 1915, shortly after losing a friend in Ypres, a Canadian doctor, Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae was inspired by the sight of poppies growing in battle-scarred fields to write a now famous poem called ‘In
Battle Back - Legion funded , MoD run recovery facility in Shropshire for serving personnel (no veterans). Bravo 22 - Theatre project that started in London, and has run regionally. Care homes - We run six across England. Break Centres - They offer respite breaks for older veterans and family breaks during school holidays. There are also adventure breaks for kids that take place at centres around the country. Admiral Nurses - Dementia care and advice for carers. National Memorial Arboretum - UK’s Centre of Remembrance, in Staffordshire. The NMA is part of the Legion family of charities, but it has its own charity number, Board of Trustees, fundraising etc. Andrew

Brancepeth Castle - the first 500 years Story by Aaron Cowen
We have a few castles around us in the area, all of which are massively overlooked. Durham, Brancepeth, Witton, Stanhope and even one at Eastgate. So I thought I would take a little look at each one starting with my favourite. Brancepeth. The Brancepeth Castle was founded by the Head of the Anglo Saxon Bulmer Family. Bertrum de Bulmer was Baron of Brancepeth and High Sheriff of Yorkshire between 1128 and 1130. He died in 1166 at Brancepeth. He had a daughter called Emma who married Gilbert de Neuville, a Norman baron who came to England with William the Conqueror. The castle was first mentioned in 1296 as castrum suum de Brancepad. The name Brancepeth is said to derive its name from a Wild Boar which terrorised the area to be finally slaughtered by Sir Roger de Ferrie. This may be false since Sir Roger de Ferrie was likely of Ferryhill. There is a small church next to the castle which is of Saxon origin (possibly as early as 700AD). It is the church of St. Brandons and as it predates the castle it is likely that Brancepeth derives its name from “Brawndons Peth” or Brandons Path. St Brandon the Navigator was an Irish Saint who could well have walked through the area travelling from Argyll in Scotland to Wales. There is in fact a Roman Road which passes through the Village of Brancepeth. ville 1st Earl of Ne Tomb of Sir Ralph h Staindrop Churc Westmoreland at er side of him. eith es wiv two with his

Gilbert de Neuville, or Geoffrey de Neville became Lord of Ashby and Brancepeth. The Nevilles were said to be descended from Uhtred who was a descendant of Crínán of Dunkeld the father of King Duncan I of Scotland. They continued to be the proprietors of Brancepeth as well as Raby Castle for many years afterwards. The Castle itself was extensively rebuilt in 1398 by Ralph Neville 1st Earl of Westmoreland. England at this time was at war with France.
A War known as the Hundred years War (1337-1453). The Battle of Nevilles Cross (see image above) took place on 17th October 1346 as part of this war and the site took its name from the Nevilles of Brancepeth Castle. In 1569 Queen Elizabeth I was on the throne. The Northern Catholic Barons including the Nevilles decided to plot together to overthrow the Queen in favour of Mary Queen of Scots in what was known as the Northern Rebellion. They failed and the Castles of Raby and Brancepeth were confiscated from the Neville Continued on the next page.

Family. Nine men from “Elmyden Rawe” joined in with the rebellion and two were executed. Their bodies were put on display at Helmington Row in a Gibbet to warn others against carrying out such acts. There is a place called Peter Hill in Helmington Row and on an old tithe map names a field “Gibbet Field” in 1840. This may be a coincidence or this may be the location where the bodies were displayed. Could one of the men have been named Peter? The incumbent of Brancepeth Castle and one of the leaders of the Rebellion was Charles Neville, 6th Earl of Westmoreland (see image). He fled
firstly to Fernyhurst Castle, Lord Kerr’s house in Roxburghshire, Scotland. His wife remained with his children at Brancepeth. In the summer of 1570 he fled to Flanders since the Earl of Northumberland had been executed, he did not want the same fate for himself. His castles were confiscated and remained the property of the crown for many years afterwards. Charles was to never see his wife again and he died on a pitiful pension from the King of Spain. His wife appealed to Queen Elizabeth I to show her mercy but she was imprisoned in Norfolk for the rest of her days. The castle was then granted by King James I to one of his favourites, Thomas Carr, 1st Earl of Somerset, except it was then confiscated from him due to him being found guilty of poisoning Sir Thomas Overbury. The Castle remained property of the Crown until 1633.

Owner, Fondant & Apron Strings, Stanhope
Autumn has well and truly arrived with leaves turning orange, occasional morning frost on the car and big woolly jumpers. At this time of year at Fondant & Apron Strings, my customers really appreciate the warm ovens and that great home baked smell radiating from the kitchen in our Cake Café in Stanhope . Warm and cosy, the perfect place to spend time with friends. This is also the time of year when I bring out some of my favourite autumn recipes like this Apple Crumble Cake recipe. Give it a go and make your day Cakelicious!
What you need r, 200g Softened Butter, 300g Plain Flou ar, Sug tor Cas 275g , les 4 Eating App 4 large Eggs, 2tsp Vanilla Extract and ¼ Tsp Cinnamon Crumble Topping 125g Plain Flour, 50g Castor Sugar, er ¼ Tsp Cinnamon and 60g Melted Butt
How Its Done Heat the oven to 180c Prepare a spring form loose bottomed oven tin by greasing and flouring it and placing a piece of non stick baking paper in the bottom. 1) Peel, halve and core the apples. Cut into slices about 5mm thick. Put the slices into a bowl, toss through 2 tbsps of the castor sugar and the cinnamon and set aside. 2) Beat the butter and remaining sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs and vanilla Add the flour and the salt. Pour the mixture in the prepared tin and level the surface. 3) Push the apple slices vertically down into the mixture as far as they will go and very close together. 4) Crumb Mixture - Using a spatula, mix together all the ingredients for the crumb topping until you have large damp lumps . Scatter over the top of the apples in the cake pan. 5) Bake in the middle of the oven for 1 hr 30 mins - 1 hr 45 mins until a skewer comes out clean. (Each oven is different so timings may vary depending on the oven). 6) Cool in the tin for at least ten minutes then transfer to a cooling rack. Serve warm or at room temperature with custard or my favourite, extra thick whipped double cream. Yummm!
