Spotlight on the Crook Rotary Club. This month we shine the spotlight on the Crook Rotary Club who do lots of great work in the local community. Could you start by telling us a little bit about the Crook Rotary Club? Whether you are volunteering by helping your local community food bank or responding to local or international disasters, there is a project or activity to suit everyone. By volunteering with Rotary, you know that you will be changing people’s lives for the better. Being part of Rotary is more than just giving back to the community by volunteering . It is also about you bringing your skills experience and enthusiasm to help it thrive, whilst making friends along the way. Crook Rotary Club is a friendly place, we invite speakers to our meetings from a wide range of backgrounds to share their knowledge, increasing members social and cultural understanding. Members share a common interest in friendship and if you visit any club around Great Britain and Ireland you will immediately feel the sense of camaraderie and fun.
committed to ensuring that our endeavours in helping local communities are well organised, productive and value for money. Could you tell us a little bit about the local causes that the Rotary Club have helped support? We have just completed a project to install three public access defibrillators in Crook Town Centre. The defibrillators are held in metal cases with a coded lock, mounted on the exterior of buildings. Access is achieved by dialling 999, where the ambulance service will issue the access code for the box, to retrieve the defibrillator. Use of a defibrillator can save the life of someone suffering a heart attack. Each Christmas we stage a Carol Concert involving local school choirs, proceeds from such events are donated to the choirs and local causes, including the local hospital
Nationally what are the aims of the Rotary Club organisation as a whole? Rotarians are business and professional men and women who give a little of their time to help others. We experience an enormous sense of achievement by working with other community leaders and being actively involved in international projects. Rotary gives you the opportunity to do something really worthwhile. We benefit from being part of a large internationally trusted organisation

Parkside achieves Inspiring STEM School Status Recognising excellence in STEM Provision Parkside is delighted to have achieved Inspiring STEM School Status; the award was only introduced to the North East in September and we are extremely proud to be the first school in the region to be awarded the status. Mrs Sumega worked with staff to identify evidence within the school to show the effectiveness of our provision for STEM subjects; both inside and outside of the classroom. Our effectiveness was rated in the following categories: leadership support of STEM subjects, extra-curricular activities, outreach opportunities and family participation.
Parkside Academy Hall Lane, Willington, Crook Co. Durham, DL15 0QF Tel: 01388 746 396
We had two inspections from RTC North and our evidence was then verified by independent representatives from STEM businesses in the North East who identified our strengths: “We were very impressed at the amount and range of activities that were going on in the school. In particular the use of STEM Ambassadors in lessons as part of the curriculum was impressive.” Evidence shows that this consistent and widespread approach is the most effective way to ensure that the STEM programme has high quality impact. “It’s clear that the school have demonstrated significant engagement with the STEM Ambassador programme through their varied programme of STEM enrichment and engagement. This level of additional support will impact their students in the educational and life choices they are making.”

Shops of yesteryear - Willoughby’s Story by Aaron Cowen
Crook once had a thriving high street, but like everywhere it has suffered the wrath of the internet where more and more people now do online shopping. However, there are shops that have over the years been treasured by local folk. Many of them have long gone, yet they are still fondly remembered. I could probably write a book alone on the subject. I was recently sent some photographs of Ruby Cottage. Built in 1903 by the Willoughby family who ran their small sweet shop there until 1985. Being born in 1981, I surprisingly remember going into the shop for sweets, usually on my way to my Grandparents house on South End Villas. I can also remember the little white-haired lady that was Mrs Willoughby (See image on oppisite page). The family’s confectionery skills dated back to 1881 at least. Joseph Willoughby was born in 1840 in Northallerton, Yorkshire. The Willoughby family moved to Crook around 1858 and in 1861 Joseph was living with his brother William in Arthur Street, Crook. He was a labourer and married Jane Sedgewick in 1868 and in 1871 was living at Church Hill, Crook working as a Cartman.
By 1901 Joseph’s son John Thomas Willoughby who was born in 1873 set up his own confectionery business at 22 Hope Street Crook. Today this is the Traditional Turkish Barbers shop and for a lot of years previously was A.B. Fruiterers. John was married in 1897 to Jane Anna Parkin. They had 3 children, Maud Vera born in 1900, Joseph born in 1906 and Ena born in 1907. (See the the family photograph to the left). Maud married James Arthur Robinson who was related to Alan Robinson of Robinson’s Top Shop and they divided the land up at Ruby Cottage to build their own home which is now named Applegarth. Joseph moved away and Ena married Mark Bell. Ena however continued the business at the premises as Ena Willoughby since Mark died in 1964. Everyone knew her as Mrs Willoughby. She herself died in 1994. Ruby Cottage, 1 New Road, Crook was built in 1903. The photograph shows Ruby cottage being built with David Mather fourth from the left (Great Uncle to Tracy Watson who remembers visiting the cottage as a child. She remembers all the polished wood and the bell). This is where the famous Willoughby shop continued to sell its sweets from. At that time the cottage would have been surrounded mostly by fields, since Morson Avenue was not built until 1914 and South End Villas was not built until 1923.
According to the 1881 and 1891 census the family had moved to 57 Gladstone Street, Crook. Joseph was now a confectioner. Although his premises were simply a house. Where he sold his goods at this time I do not know. Perhaps on a market stall? Joseph died on 3rd June 1907 in Crook. His wife Jane died in 1928. 16

Inside the shop, the till was a wooden draw with a buzzer and jars of sweets lined the windows. For years even after the shop had closed for good these jars remained. A bell rang when you opened the door. Many may remember buying crab apples from the garden orchard wrapped in blue paper. The coloured photos show the Cottage being altered in 1985 which is when we believe the shop closed. Ena would have been 78 at the time. Neville Anderson bought the house in 2001 and built the extension onto the property. The cottage has changed hands again since then. Many people remember the shop over the years, buying penny sweets on their way to school or the swimming baths. One lad was once sent in for a packet of assorted crisps. What he was looking for was a packet of crisps like a 10p sweet mix up. Poor Mrs Willoughby looked all over in her stock for these crisps that simply never existed. Do you have any specific memories about the shop? If so, please let us know. Aaron is a keen amateur historian and one of the admins of the Crook Town and District History Group Facebook group, he is also Chairman of the Empire Electric Palace group.
