The Monuments Men part 1 Story by Aaron Cowen

Being an Architectural Technologist it is not surprising that I have an interest in Architecture. I take the Architects drawings and then detail up how that building should go together. I worked on the very controversial Tindale Towers in Bishop Auckland, detailing much of how it should be built. So why not look at the buildings and architecture around the area. Who were the people who created what we see around us? The area that Out and About Magazine covers did not see any renowned Architects until the 1840s however it has long been connected with one of England’s most highly acclaimed architects Sir Christopher Wren. You know? the one who designed Sir Christopher Wren London’s St. Paul’s (1632-1723 ) Cathedral after the Great Fire of London in 1666. The Dome of the Cathedral was some feat of architecture in itself. Sir Christopher Wren is a descendant of the Wren family of Billy Hall who were thought to have moved here from Denmark in the 14th Century. Legend has it that Sir Christopher Wren used to visit Billy Hall and Binchester Hall for a holiday. However being such a distant relation of the Wrens at Billy Hall I find this unlikely. But hey! We are building towns here. And every town has its landmark buildings. Those buildings which make a statement that jumps out and says “hey look at me”. The ones we would fight to protect or keep, that gives the

place some sort of visual identity. But architects just draw pretty pictures. They don’t actually build things. John Kellet was born in 1813 in Stanhope, County Durham and moved Headstone behind St. to Crook and was Catherine’s Church, Crook in given the accolade memorial to Pheobe Kellet, 1st wife of John Kellet “The of “The man who man who built Crook”. built Crook”. Many of the early buildings encircling the Market place, Commercial Street, Bridge Street, Mill Street and one side of Hope Street was mostly built by him in the 1860s. Crook and surrounding areas really began to expand from 1840 especially with the introduction of the Railways, enabling the easy transportation of coal. An ever increasing population meant that we needed more buildings to facilitate this growth, and we didn’t just want ordinary buildings. Only the best would do. In 1841 Ignatius Bonomi was commissioned to design St Catherine’s Church. Although a very plain structure, Bonomi was somewhat a well Ignatius Bonomi (1787-1870 ) known figure in Durham. He was known as the “First Railway Architect” with

his work including one of the first Railway Bridges in the country over the River Skerne in Darlington and depicted on an old Five Pound Note with George Stephenson on it. It is not surprising that a Railway Architect would design buildings in the area since, George Hutton Wilkinson who owned Harperley Hall and much of the land in Crook was the Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Great North of England Railway. He even had his own Station at Harperley designed by Darlington and Stockton Railway Architect John Middleton

renowned architect. The Catholic Church in Crook had to go one better. In 1853 they commissioned Edward Welby Pugin (1834-1874) (son of Augustine Pugin who was a pioneering figure in the Gothic Revival and designer of the interiors of the Palace of Westminster), to build a church and school. However since the land was given to the church by George Hutton Wilkinson because his Catholic converted son Thomas requested a piece of land lower down the hill, we seem to be seeing a pattern here. Edward was just 19 years of age when he designed the church on the hill. Although his design was never completed as it was meant to have a tower and spire. The tower was later redesigned by Dunn and Hansom of Newcastle in 1897. Spotlight on local musician This month we point the spotlight on local musician Ashlea Whitfield. Ashlea is 25 years old and is from Sunnybrow. How long have you been into music? As long as I can remember I have been drawn to music. I was in a Jazz band for over 10 years, in the percussion section, I would arrange music and played the xylophone and marimba from around 8 years old. The Jazz Band brought so much community spirit to our area and gave young people something to commit to and focus on. I have so many great memories of my time competing in the band. I love how playing music and putting on a performance can bring people together like that. I knew I had a natural musical ear, but didn’t find out I could sing until later on. Who are your musical influences and what is your favourite song to preform? I take inspiration from anywhere I can and listen to music across all genres from Serj Tankian to Catherine Jenkins. I am mainly influenced by the likes of Alicia Keys, Amy Winehouse, Lana Del Rey, Sia and strong artists who have faced struggles to get where they are. My favourite song to perform is “Wherever You Will Go” written by The Calling, I sang this song at a friend’s funeral after he sadly committed suicide. It was the first time I had performed publicly. That played a huge part in why I changed my path and dedicated my life to music. Every time I sing that song it reminds me of why I started doing this in the first place.

songs I sing to life in my own unique way, telling the story behind it in my voice. I try to capture the moment and get what that song means across, like when a bride requests a song to walk down the aisle to. I perform a lot of acoustic sets with various musicians, and also use pre-recorded tracks. What has been your favourite venue to play and why? My favourite venue so far would definitely be The Beverley Minster. I performed here on behalf of The Prince’s Trust. Those cathedral buildings are designed to amplify the acoustics for choirs and hymns. So singing in there was an absolute pleasure. I can’t wait to do it again someday!

How would you describe your style for those that haven’t heard you? I have a smooth, sultry vocal and have my own natural style. I love to perform acoustic blues and soul music. I aim to bring the 16

Where do you see yourself musically in the next 5 years? I want to make and produce my own music. I am starting a degree in Music Technology this year where I will be learning to record and create music live and edit sound on computer software. I want to gain as much experience performing live alongside my studies as I possibly can. I hope one day, to be able to set up a project in Willington/Crook, that will bring the community together just like the Jazz Bands did, to help give children from this area something similar to be a part of. As a child in the Jazz Band I learned so much about music, team work, competition, drive and focus. I’d like to be able to bring that back to the community someday.

my music, so I give my all when performing. I like to tell a story that moves and connects people. Music for me is about feeling, emotions and having a good time together, this is what I try to deliver to audiences. If people want to hear more about my upcoming music projects, book live entertainment for an event, or even just more on how I started singing, they can visit my new website: www.ashleasnotes.com Facebook: /ashleasnotes Twitter @ashleasnotes YouTube: Ashlea Whitfield

And last of all why should people come and see you or book you? I put a lot of work and time into my voice and
