wing to the Covid pandemic, last year's Pride was cancelled so it is with pleasure that we are #together again to celebrate Pride 2022. The last 2 years have been trying for all sections of our community. Many members of our community have lost their jobs, queer bars and venues have had to close and morale, in general, has been low. But we have not let that get us down. We have learned new skills and new ways of navigating the Pride landscape. So when people ask what we have been up to in the last 12 months, we can confidently say that we have been representing our community all over the World. Cape Town Pride has been involved in: United Prides of Africa, Global Pride and food drives. The Team at Cape Town Pride hasn't stopped working. Furthermore Cape Town Pride was awarded "The best Pride in Africa" by InterPride, a global Pride organisation. All our Pride events are however subject to Government Protocols around COVID-19 to ensure that whatever we do is safe and socially responsible. This year we a have a full Pride calendar ensuring that all the stakeholders have as much visibility as possible. These include the Pink Party, Mr & Miss Cape Town Pride Pageant, Diva's Extravaganza, the classic movie night is sponsored by the Embassy of Sweden and the Swedish Institute and the Pride March and Pride Festival Mardi Gras, brought to you this year by Microsoft - Gilead Sciences and OUTReach Africa will happen, albeit with lesser numbers than in the past. Crowning this years Pride is a fabulous new event, which we plan to make an annual happening on the Pride calendar - The Cape Town Pride Proms in conjunction with Artscape and the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra. We have also highlighted the Nkoli House Project as the project that Cape Town Pride is going to be supporting and raising funds for this year. We know that it is a terrible year for fundraising but every single cent counts these days.

I
t has been two years since we have been able to get together as a community to celebrate the most important day in the Pride calendar. The Pride Festival Mardi Gras will be happening at the Green Point Track on the 26th February and will be, as in the past, a day of music and entertainment. Opening the event will be the Premier of the Western Cape, Mr Alan Winde and joining him on the Pride stage will be the new Mayor of the City of Cape Town, Geordin Hill Lewis as well as the ward councillor for the are Clr Ian McMahon who needs no introduction to the community. Last year Cape Town Pride received the InterPride Award for the Best Pride in Africa, which is a huge feather in the City's cap. This year there are a number of events happening during Pride month. The Pride Festival and Mardi Gras this year is brought to presented by Microsoft, Gilead Sciences and Outreach Africa. For a full list of the Pride events turn to page 20. New on the Pride events calendar, and the final event is the Cape Town Pride Proms with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra, featuring South African artists making for a spectacular night of music. This event will be happening at the Artscape Opera House on the 9th March. Covid has taken its toll on everyone. In light of this we are required to adhere to Covid protocols, so proof of vaccination, PCR test, Antigen or Lateral Flow test will be required for all in-person events. he final event of the Pride calendar is The Cape Town Pride Proms ... which is being presented by Fitch & Leedes, The City of Cape Town and Outreach Africa with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra. This spectacular event is happening on Wednesday 9th March at the Artscape Opera House and is a first on the on the African continent. This fabulous night of music will be one of the highlight events of Cape Town Pride 2022 calendar, and is set to become an annual event, showcasing local talent and featuring music that has been written or performed by LGBT+ people. Modelled on the world-renowned BBC Proms, the Pride event will feature the full Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra accompanying both well-known singers and new talent. The Cape Town Pride concert line-up will be a mix of classical music; well-known arias such as the rousing Nessun Dorma, to songs from musicals and timeless pop songs including those made famous by the likes of Freddie Mercury and Elton John. The theme connecting all the music is that it was either written or performed by LGBTI+ people which, being a part of the city’s LGBTI+ pride calender is appropriate. Three Tons of Fun, those iconic, larger-than-life ladies who perform at Pride Cape Town every year are included in the lineup as well as local Cape Town soprano, Lynelle Kenned and the awesome voice of Siphesihle Mdena, a local upcoming tenor; Earl Gregory will be performing a song from the hit musical Kinky Boots in which he played the lead to critical acclaim. New to the Pride stage is another local Diva, Lady G, otherwise known as Grant J. Peres. Hailing from the small Western Cape town of Ceres this talented performer will belt out some classic gay anthems and I Am What I am from the acclaimed LGBTI musical La Cage Aux Folles. Enjoy the astounding talent and presence of Yahto Kraft, who made a name for himself on the South African music scene with the release of his first album Ugly. Also needing no introduction, and a regular on the Pride stage is Natalia Da Rocha, who was recently inducted in to the SA Music Hall of Fame. She will perform songs from Motown which will get you on your feet. Capetonians need no introduction to Craig Lucas, a local singer/ songwriter who has appeared on the Pride stage in the past. Craig is set to blow us away with all-time favourites including Barcelona. Earl Gregory starring in the hit musical Kinky Boots

All-in-all with a variety of musical styles and genres, creative lighting, and a full orchestra, an awesome evening is envisaged, with something for everyone ... The one night musical event will be taking place at the Artscape Opera House with the Cape Town Philharmonic under the musical direction of Stefan Lombard and conducted by Cape Town maestro Brandon Phillips. Compères for the evening will be wellknown radio personality Julian Naidoo and a former Miss Cape Town Pride, Wendy La Rosa. Notable honorary guests will include the Premier of the Western Cape, Mr Alan Winde and the Mayor of the City, Geordin Hill-Lewis, the ward councillor for the area Mr Ian McMahon as well as other well-known, high-profile LGBTI+ celebrities. is year, the movie night will be hosted by the Embassy of Sweden and will feature two films - a Swedish documentary and a classic LGBT+ film. Movie night is on the 25th Feb at the Labia Theatre in Gardens.
The classic movie is Harvey Fierstein's Torch Song Trilogy. A film that will make you laugh and at times cry as you follow the ups and downs of a Jewish homosexual, drag queen, and torch singer through three phases of her life. Excellent acting from Harvey Fierstein, Matthew Broderick, Brian Kirwin and a brilliant performance by Anne Bancroft who plays Fierstein's mother. The film is funny, touching and very human and rates as break though in gay cinema especially when it first premiered in 1988. The Swedish film being screened is a documentary about five Swedish transgender girls who talk about themselves: their inner lives, dating, parties and everyday life. Girls like us is about Saga, Vanessa, Xenia, Ivy and Heidi – all with different backgrounds and different experiences. We are all more than the gender we are assigned. What you have between your legs does not define you as a person. The night will be attended by the Swedish Ambassador as well as staff from the embassy. The beneficiary project is the Nkoli House Project. Cape Town Pride have identified the need for a community centre aimed providing a home and safe space for our diverse LGBTIQ+ community to gather, meet and mix with like-minded people – with special emphasis on the often overlooked needs of the silver seniors in our community. ZOE ZANA
YAHTO KRAFT, is openly queer, and described as a "fabulously fierce powerhouse of a performer". With a background in classical singing, Yahto went on to attend Stageworx School of Performing Arts in Randburg. His vocal coach entered him for Season 3 of The Voice, where he chose Team Lira. He says “Lira taught me how to be a diva and get what I want.” He was sadly voted off before the finals, but loved the experience saying, "We did it guys! We got through to them and showed some people how we do it, and we aren’t done yet. We’ve got a long way to go but hopefully I’ve opened some doors for y’all.” He released his debut single “Ugly”. As a queer performer he feels a responsibility to LGBT+ people “I do what I do, for the people who don’t have a voice, for those queer kids who can’t come out because the families aren’t accepting, or they’re afraid, and they’re just not ready. To have your family not love who you are, I can’t imagine how terrifying that must be, but to not love yourself is something far more terrifying.” He's incredibly talented with a powerful voice...

Zoe sky-rocketed to stardom after reaching the finals of South African Idols in 2013. Since then she has performed both locally and internationally as well as appearing in musical theatre productions. At the Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees she performed in the musical theatre production Droom and later in the Afrikaans theatre musical Gly. After Idols she worked with Loyiso Music establishing her solo career. She has always dreamed of a career as a singer and loves appearing at Pride saying, "gay audiences are the most supportive crowd to perform to... no judgment, just happiness and fun times, when I sing to gay folk I feel loved and supported".

LATHEEM GABRIEL
LATHEEM GABRIEL is a singer/songwriter who comes from a talented creative family. After school he got involved in charity work and activism, joining The Inner Circle where he co-directed and wrote the documentary Fitrah which focused on issue faced by queer Muslims. He has shared the stage with the famous Nakhane performing at the invitation of the Mayor of Stockholm, Sweden. He also appeared on the United Prides of Africa on-line event earlier this year, which was viewed by over a million people worldwide and was the recipeint of Cape TGown Pride Icon Award for best performer last year. Performing alternative music, with his musical inspiration being his own life experiences. It’s a pleasure to have this enormously talented musician back at Pride again!!

The fabulous, MANILA VON TEEZ is back on the Pride stage this year after a triumphant, exciting and very busy year As a finalist in SA's Got Talent, Manila is a professional consummate performer, whose act is nothing short of mind-blowing. GRANT JOSHUA PERES, originates from Ceres and had is induction into the industry at age 19 where he performed under direction of Hennie Van Greunen in Die Laaste Aand alongside Natalia Da Rocha, AJ Van der Merwe and Pedro Kruger in 2002 at KKNK and Aardklop. In 2003 he made it to SA Idols Top 100 and came 3rd Nationwide in the KykNet Zing 2 Competition in 2004. He’s worked alongside the legendary Natalia Da Rocha at Artscape. From 2010 he worked alongside Alistair Izobell on productions and re-recorded Kaapse Draai for Die Burger for the album Dra Jou Hart op jou Tong. Grant has travelled the world with Applauz Arts Initiative, and as been a Male Headliner on Costa Italian Cruise liners for 12 years and made appearances on the Scandinavian Ferry, Silja. THE IMPORTANCE OF CELEBRATING PRIDE
P
ride reminds us of the importance of celebrating the diversity within our community and the achievements that we have made …
The fight to have our rights recognised by the South African government was a long and hard-fought struggle. The Apartheid government criminalised sexual intercourse between men under the common law crime of “sodomy” and “unnatural sexual offence”, as a part of the governments Immorality Act. In 1969, an amendment to the Immorality Act further prohibited men from engaging in any erotic conduct when there were more than two people present. This galvanised the formation of several groups to oppose and fight for our equality. There are some notable people who spearheaded this movement: Simon Nkoli, Beverley Ditsi and Edwin Cameron (who was later appointed to the high court), and many other workers and activists operating in their support. In the late 1980’s, Cape Town Pride’s Tommy Patterson organised one of the first “gay” fund-raising days called Shaft 8 which for the first time in the country, saw top South African talent performing at an LGBTI+ event. The event held in Johannesburg was a huge success. The first Pride march was held on 13 October 1990, as a part of a broader struggle to decriminalise homosexuality in South African law and a protest against Apartheid. Marchers feared for their safety, and many wore masks during the event. Simon Nkoli addressed the crowd, saying, “I am black, and I am gay. I cannot separate the two parts of me into primary or secondary struggles. They will be all one struggle”. In the following years Pride marches have become annual events and were held primarily in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban. Under South Africa’s ruling National Party from 1948 to 1994, homosexuality was a crime punishable by up to seven years in prison. In 1993, as a direct result of the activism, the interim Constitution prohibited discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. In 1996 the constitution was approved and two years later the court gave its ruling on 9 October 1998 that the law prohibiting homosexual conduct between consenting adults in private violated the Constitution, made it legal. The court ruled that its order should be retroactively applied to 27 April 1994.

In 1994, during his inauguration speech as president, Nelson Mandela stated the following: “They speak of a constitutional, democratic, political order in which, regardless of colour, gender, religion, political opinion or sexual orientation, the law will provide for the equal protection of all citizens.” South Africa’s Constitution became the first in the world to prohibit unfair discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation. It thereby guarantees equality for gay and lesbian people. We are still taught that being gay is evil, especially by religious groups, meaning that the fight that each person with a sexuality different than the run-of-the-mill straight person has is a fight for acceptance, a fight for equality and a fight for being able to just be who you are. Whilst attitudes are changing, the process is slow, so the fight

must continue – this is why we need Pride. It is the one day, which should be every day, that we can celebrate being who we are.

So many young LGBTI+ people are anguished by revealing their sexuality to their families, their friends, and are tormented as to how to transition this secret from inner to outer.
Other African countries still have the death penalty for being homosexual. Our government needs to pressure these nations and let them know that these laws are not acceptable to this country, in light of the constitution they represent. On the 2nd February two Iranian men were executed for being gay after spending 6 years in jail. “The two Iranian men were executed today after being found guilty of charges related to homosexuality,” Iran Human Rights Monitor tweeted. “Human rights websites identified the men as 32-year-old Mehrdad Karimpour & Farid Mohammadi.
Coming out, firstly to oneself can be a distressing experience but once one is able to embrace one’s sexuality, only then can one move ahead in life, with nothing to hide. The fear of ‘coming out of the closet’ is very real. LGBTI+ people have their sexualities ridiculed, with some being cut-off from family, and ostracised by their communities. People tease them relentlessly, especially at schools which lead to bullying. Pride is a time to celebrate the ever-growing, diversity of people whose sexual identity differs to the ‘norm’ of everyone else. We strive for a day when no one needs to struggle with the stigma of being gay. We strive for a day where we don’t have to have labels. We strive to celebrate everyone, regardless of sexuality or gender, and show our love to the people who make this world a better place, by the diversity they give. For people to put so much focus on another’s sexuality is absurd. It should not matter who loves which sex, or what sex they identify as, as long as they are living their life with love and compassion. We strive for the day when we don’t have to hear any news about so-called controversy because of the addition of a gay couple to a children’s television show. We strive for a day when we don’t have to read about someone who has been driven to suicide just for being themselves. In 1998, discrimination in the workplace based on sexual orientation became illegal. In 2002, the Constitutional Court gave same-sex partners the same adoption rights as married spouses. Same sex marriage is a reality – that became legal in 2006 Whilst the fight for equality under the law has almost been achieved … there is still The Prevention and Combating of Hate Crimes and Hate Speech Bill, which is pending in Parliament. This bill will outlaw hate crimes and hate speech on grounds of race, gender identity and sexual orientation, which we need to fight to get passed. We also need our government to take a stand against other African governments who discriminate against their LGBTI+ citizens. After all, they represent our constitution and have taken an oath to uphold it, both here and abroad. Some countries, like Ghana, where currently a bill is being pushed through their parliament will criminalise all LGBTI+ people as well as anyone who associates

However, it would seem that the stigma against the LGBTQIA+ community is beginning to change, but there is still much work to be done in changing society's attitudes towards our community and celebrating the diversity around us.

GOODBYE TO A LGBT+ ICON & ALLY
O
n Boxing Day, 265 December 2021 South Africa lost one of her favourite sons. Archbishop Desmond Tutu passed away at the age of 90.
Known affectionately as The Arch, he embodied all that is right in a person who spent his life fighting against the injustice of apartheid. After the first democratic election in South Africa, The Arch famously urged the nation to “Be nice to whites, they need you to rediscover their humanity.” In 1984 he was honoured with the Nobel Peace Prize “for his role as a unifying leader figure in the non-violent campaign to resolve the problem of apartheid in South Africa.” and a year later was selected to preside over The Truth and Reconciliation Commission. He was, as President Ramaphosa said in his eulogy, "our moral compass and national conscience.” He was a man small in stature but with a heart and commitment to fighting against inequality and injustice the size of a giant. Our community remember him for his outspoken stance on advocating LGBTQI+ rights, decrying all forms of violence and discrimination against our community, famously saying in a video: “I oppose such injustice with the same passion that I opposed apartheid.” He received the 2020 Cape Town Pride “Lifetime Achievement Award” for his support of our community. He will be sadly missed - May he rest in peace.

T
he Nkoli House Project has been established to set up a Pride Community care cebtre in Cape Town.
The Nkoli House Project, so named in honour of the late Simon Nkoli, a gay activist and anti-apartheid campaigner, who fought tirelessly for freedom, equality and social justice. Cape Town Pride has identified the need for a community centre aimed at providing a home and safe space for our diverse LGBTI+ community to gather, meet and mix with like-minded people – with special emphasis on the often-over-looked needs of the silver seniors in the community. In light of this, Cape Town Pride is currently in negotiations with the City of Cape Town, and Provincial as well as National Government and other stake-holders, to secure a suitable premises. One has been identified and Pride has been in contact with the owner who is supportive of the project and its aims. However, the property is in dire need of renovation in order for it to be fit for purpose. The pandemic did put a spoke in the works as the City of Cape Town and other players attention was diverted by Covid-19. To achieve this goal in getting the Nkoli House Project

up and running, we NEED to raise at least 1 million rand. A huge undertaking. To this end we have put out appeals to the international LGBTI+ funders for their help. Furthermore, the proceeds of a number of Pride events, such as the Cape Town Pride Proms and the Icon Awards will go towards the Nkoli House Project. It does not matter how small your donation is – every amount matters. Pride is hoping to have this funding in place by 1 June 2022 and have the ear-marked property secured before this date. As you can imagine, there are a number of requirements which need to be satisfied, both legal and social, but the Project is on track.

Cape Town Pride doesn't happen without the fabulous effort from our community who volunteer
C
ape Town Pride is run by volunteers. Some of us work on short-term projects or campaigns – and some of us work all year round as part of the core team. Taking part is an incredible experience and we’d love you to join the team.
The group of volunteers every year are passionate about equality and diversity. We are a not-for-profit organisation, and any surplus funds we raise are used to support the LGBTQ+ community bring them new and exciting events each year. Together, we run the South Africa’s biggest, most diverse pride, and our job is to make sure we provide a platform for every part of Cape Town’s LGBTQ+ community (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans*, queer, questioning, intersex, non-binary, asexual, polysexual, genderqueer and gender variant people) to raise awareness of LGBTQ+ issues and campaign for the freedoms that will allow them to live their lives on a genuinely equal footing.

From Pink Party, which helps to raise funds for the events for the Pride week, to our annual Parade through Green Point and the amazing 2 week, city-wide festival that precedes the Pride weekend, everything Pride and the volunteers do is designed to give LGBTQ+ people a platform to be visible and speak loudly to the rest of the city about what we have achieved, how far we have come and what is still needed. Cape Town Pride includes people of every race and faith, whether disabled or able-bodied, and all sexualities and genders including lesbian, gay, bisexual, asexual, queer, questioning, intersex, trans*, genderqueer, gender variant or non-binary as well as straight and cis allies.
