Big Bears, Bigger Fun: Brawny Bear Weekend Is Back!

CUDDLES, SNUGGLES, BEAR HUGS … OH MY!

Prepare to witness the arrival of the friendly, happy-go-lucky male specimens, the gay bears, during the fifth annual Brawny Bear Weekend in Puerto Vallarta around American Thanksgiving week in November 2024.

The term ‘bear’, which originated in the 80s within the gay circle, has been used to describe a subculture of larger, hairier, and often more masculine gay men who identified with certain physical and behavioral traits. The bear community quickly grew in the early 90s and social groups and events began catering to it.

These gatherings provided platforms for inclusivity for men who’d felt marginalized in mainstream gay gatherings in the past based on their interests or appearances. Over the years, this community has continued evolving, embracing diversity and camaraderie among its members. And today, the bear identity is celebrated in various social events, bear runs, and bear-themed activities worldwide.

And the Brawny Bear Weekend is no exception as it promises to have several fun-filled activities planned for these larger-than-life, fun-loving men looking forward to laughing, eating, drinking, and dancing. Open to many bear types such as polar, grizzlies, cubs, and even otters and RATS—rapidly aging twinks—yes, that is a thing—the event has plans for everyone.

With Brawny Bear now In its fifth year, Brian Kent Productions has partnered with Mantamar Beach Club and Industry Nightclub, promising four days of daytime pool events, T-dances, and house music starting November 21st.

The event celebrates the bear community and offers an inclusive and fun-filled experience for larger men and their admirers. Attendees can look forward to mingling with friends and enjoying a vibrant atmosphere.

It is also Brian’s birthday weekend so be sure to offer him a birthday wish if you see him at the Meet-andGreet at One Sixe One PV, the bar he owns.

When Kent informed me over the phone that house music is offered only once a year in Puerto Vallarta during the Brawny Bear Weekend, I could sense the excitement in his voice. Renowned DJs such as Karsten Sollors and Tony Moran will offer chest-thumping beats during the nightly events at the Industry Nightclub, he said. You might also catch a glimpse of Brian at the DJ booth entertaining and mixing electronic dance music.

In contrast to Beef Dip, another yearly bear event that has grown significantly over the years, Kent told me, the Brawny Bear offers intimate energy. This event promises a comfortable setting that allows attendees to mingle among friends and carry a conversation, he added.
