Alejandro Castillo is not as tall or as bulky as you might expect. Film, so they say, has a way of making an individual appear larger than life. It was a Sunday afternoon, the middle of May, in Puerto Vallarta.

The newfound heat of summer revealed itself in a few small wet spots on his royal blue cotton tank top as Castillo breezed in toward the patio at Incanto for our interview.

His outfit complete with solid gray shorts, sandals, and a sturdy black ballcap—one that he adjusted throughout our hourlong chat, from back to front and then back again—Castillo immediately seemed to me more approachable and personable than the lusty, libidinous stares that his social media channels suggest.

The adult film performer smiled and shook my hand, sat down, and dutifully we got down to business.

“I want to make a difference,” he said. “I’m regularly in touch with all my fans. What I have been noticing for the last two years is the kind of fans that contact me, it changes according to the social media platform. The guys who contact me on Instagram, they are younger, around 20s. They always ask me, ‘Does your family know what you do? Do you ever have any problem with society and how they see you?’ Of course, they want to know this because they are comparing their lives to what I’m showing.”

“Twitter is a little more aggressive media than Instagram,” he said. “There are more trolls, more hate. There are more critics about how you look, what you do, how you do it, because Twitter was made for you to follow someone that you don’t know. Instead of Facebook, which is

connecting you with people that you already know. Facebook people are a little older, 40s, 50s, the messages are more kind.”

“What I try to do is explain that they shouldn’t compare with us,” he added, “because what they see on social media is just the final result. It is a product. Sometimes we are not only sharing our job but we’re sharing a little social life, some selfies, but what they see is not exactly how it is.”

It has been an enlightening experience for the 32-year-old actor, the past two years. Though his ambition to act in adult films began a decade ago, his entrance to the industry occurred when the famed Lucas Entertainment brought a production to this city and employed him as a location scout. When a performer canceled at the last moment, the company’s founder and CEO Michael Lucas asked the local if he knew of any potential replacements.

“He told me, ‘We’re looking for another model. Who do you think is the hottest guy in town?’ and I said ‘well… me!’ and he was like, ‘No!’ and I said, ‘Seriously. It’s me!’ so he told me to send some videos, some pictures.” “He liked them.” “It happened with that first production,” he said, “I had to do my first scene and, I don’t know, that time for the other models they didn’t do it so good as they always do. They were average. Maybe it was the weather, something different. We were filming it on the beach and different places. My scene, it was the best from all the production. The cameraman, photographers, they were happy. They said, ‘Okay, let’s give you more’ and then they offered me an exclusive contract so I’ve been working with them for two years now.”

Almost immediately he found himself dealing with inquisitive friends and family, all surprised to learn his performances were unprotected. Castillo became an unwitting educator about safe sex practises to the people who cared about him.

“I had to become someone that can let the people know that we are okay,” he said, “and we’ll be okay as long as we are informed. So I explained it to my mom, my brother, my sister. People in Mexico don’t really like to talk about AIDS because they are afraid. We have a shadow of AIDS because we grew up in that generation, so still the stigma exists but it is with us where the stigma can change. It’s a personal thing. I don’t find a lot of people talking about this, as I do, with the right information because they don’t know.”

“Older people they don’t really understand yet because they maybe lost a lot of friends during their life, or they lived for so many years they’ve lived with this fear that, for them, they cannot really understand it completely, that PrEP protects you [if you’re HIV negative] and medications make you undetectable [if you’re HIV positive]. They cannot understand that, of course, it’s not a cure, but it’s a way to live healthy. You just need to know it. Young people don’t really know either but when you explain it, it’s easier for them to understand it.”

And so began a journey of educating people, particularly gay Mexicans, about risks and consequences, sexual liberation and responsible protection. Alejandro Castillo feels a responsibility now to bring this enlightenment to as many people as possible.

“I would love to work with a hospital or an organization that can provide information,” he said. “I cannot change my country so that it will provide all the medication or give PrEP to everyone. I wish, but I can’t. What I can do is to go to them and tell them: use me. Use me to explain why everyone should use condoms if they are not on PrEP. Or use me to tell them that if they are positive that they will be okay and they’ll live with HIV and they will be happy and healthy. I don’t think there is even one person in Mexico who is talking that way openly.”

The need for this awareness, according to the actor, is unique to Mexico and he believes it is therefore incumbent upon him, as arguably the industry’s biggest Mexican star, to share the information he’s learned. Are there no other performers who do the same thing?

“I don’t think so and I’ll tell you why,” he said. “They live in other countries where there is less stigma and maybe more information and they live with different societal rules. In this case, I’m in the middle. I’m not living in Europe or the United States. I live in a Catholic country that has a lot of guilt about sexual life.”

“I looked for YouTubers in Mexico who talk about HIV because I had to know everything about it so I can explain to people who come to me and ask me,” he said. “I like to tell people, relax, just live your life, enjoy your sexual life, just know that everything has consequence and also to have a porn star sexual life you have to take those precautions. I always tell the people around me, doctors must be your friends. If you don’t feel that you have a doctor who is your friend, then you need another doctor. If you are gay, try to find a gay doctor so you feel that you can tell him exactly how is your behavior and you don’t feel that he is judging you.”

And in the meantime, Alejandro Castillo is building a career that he intends will span many more years. Along with sexual health, he’s learning the business of adult films. In an era of social media, and in a city filled with businesses relentlessly promoting themselves to the visiting masses, he understands the role he plays in the promotion of his star. As with mainstream film, book publishing, and recorded music, gone are the days when an exclusive contract with a major distributor leads directly to a lifelong ticket to the big time.

“Being exclusive means that the beginning [of a career] can be a benefit for you because they can boost your career. They will promote your name and you will be part of that team. Eventually if you want to grow you will be looking for your independence, when your name is super big then you can do whatever you want and people will come with you wherever you go, if you have onlyfans or justforfans sites, they will pay, or if you have a live show they will go and see you. But in the beginning you have to work very hard and you won’t see results very quick. It takes time.”

“I want to have my own club,” he added. “My own dance club. I want to write about how you can live your life with your own rules. Maybe in three or four years it will be a good idea to share my experience as a gay man doing gay porn and living in a society that most of the time they call themselves straight.”

“I’m in contact with different activists,” he said. “A lot of people follow me on social media who are not gay. They follow me because they like what I say and what I think. They are finding an ally. We are in the middle.”

imaginar. El cine, o como cuentan, tienen una manera de hacer que un individuo parezca ser más grande de lo que parece.

Fue un domingo por la tarde a mediados de mayo, en Puerto Vallarta. La reciente llegada ola de calor se hizo presente en algunas zonas de su playera de algodón azul mientras Castillo entraba al patio de Incanto para nuestra entrevista.

Su atuendo se complete con unos shorts grises, sandalias y una brusca cachucha negra- la cual se estuvo acomodando constantemente en el transcurso de nuestra entrevista de una hora- Castillo inmediatamente aparento ser más accesible y con más personalidad que las miradas vigorosas y libidinosas que se reflejan en sus canales de redes sociales.

El actor de películas para adultos sonrió y saludo mi mano, se sentó e inmediatamente nos pusimos a trabajar.

“Quiero hacer la diferencia” nos comentó. “Yo estoy en contacto constante con todos fans. Lo que he notado durante los últimos dos años es que el tipo de fans que me contacta cambia dependiendo de la plataforma de redes sociales. Los chicos que me contactan en Instagram son más

jóvenes, en sus veintes. Siempre me preguntan, “¿Tu familia sabes a lo que te dedicas? ¿Alguna vez tienes algún problema con cómo te ve la sociedad? Y por supuesto que quieren saber esto porque comparan sus vidas con lo que muestro.

“Twitter es un poco más agresivo que Instagram” nos comentó. “Hay más busca pleitos, más odio” Hay más críticas sobre cómo te vez, lo que haces, por qué lo haces, entre otras cosas. Twitter fue creado para que siguas a personas que no conoces, lo cual es lo contrario a Facebook, cuyo objetivo es conectarte con personas que ya conoces. Las personas que usan Facebook son un poco mayores, en sus cuarentas o cincuentas, así que los mensajes son más amables”.

“Lo que yo trato de hacer es explicarles que no se comparen con nosotros,” agrego, “porque lo que ven en las redes sociales es solo el resultado final. Es un producto. A veces no solo compartimos nuestro trabajo sino también nuestra vida social, algunos selfies, pero lo que ven, muchas veces no es lo que es.”

Durante los últimos dos años, esto ha sido una experiencia enriquecedora para el actor de treinta y dos años de edad. A pesar de que su ambición por trabajar en películas para adultos inicio hace una década, su entrada a la industria ocurrió cuando el afamado Lucas Entertainment trajo a esta ciudad una producción y lo contrato como reclutado local. Cuando algún actor cancelaba a último momento, el creador y CEO de la empresa, Michael Lucas le preguntaba al local si conocía algún remplazo potencial.

“El me comento, ´Estamos buscando a otro modelo. ¿Quién crees que sea el chico más atractivo de la ciudad? ‘a lo que yo le comenté ´ ¡pues…yo! y a esto le comento ¡No! Y yo le comente ¡Claro que soy yo! Asi que me comento que le enviara algunos videos y fotos.” “Le gustaron.” “Esto sucedió con esta primera producción,” nos comentó, “Tuve que hacer mi primera escena y no sé, pero en aquel entonces, los demás modelos no fueron tan buenos como de costumbre. Todos ellos estuvieron promedio. Quizás fue el clima, pero algo estuvo diferente. Estuvimos grabando en la playa y en diferentes locaciones y puedo decir que mi escena fue la mejor de toda la producción. El camarógrafo, fotógrafos y todos ellos estuvieron muy contentos. Ellos me comentaron ´Okay, vamos a darte más’ y después de eso me ofrecieron un contrato exclusivo con el cual he estado trabajando durante los últimos dos años.”

Casi inmediatamente se encontró lidiando con las preguntas de los amigos y familia, todos sorprendidos al aprender que sus actuaciones eran sin protección. Castillo se convirtió en un educador sobre las prácticas sexuales seguras con toda la gente que se preocupaban con él.

“Me tuve que convertir en esa persona que le puede decir a los demás que estamos bien,” el agrego, “y estaremos bien siempre y cuando estemos informados. Así que se lo explique a mi mama, hermano y hermana. La gente en México no habla sobre el SIDA porque tienen miedo. Tenemos la sombra del SIDA porque

crecimos en esa generación, así que el estigma sigue existiendo, pero es con nosotros donde cambia. Es algo personal. No sé si mucha gente habla sobre esto, pero, siempre y cuando la información sea correcta, yo lo hare.

“Las personas mayores no lo entienden todavía ya que quizás perdieron muchos amigos durante su vida, o vivieron muchos años con el temor y es por esto que quizás aún no entienden en su totalidad que PrEP te protege (si eres HIV negativo) ni a los medicamentos que te hacen indetectable (si eres HIV positivo). Ellos no entienden esto, y por supuesto, no es una cura, pero es una manera de vivir saludablemente. Tu solo necesitas estar informado. Las personas más jóvenes tampoco encuentran interés, pero una vez que se los explicas, se les facilita entenderlo.

ESTAMOS CREANDO CAMBIOS TODOS LOS DÍAS

Y así fue como comenzó su proceso de educar a las personas, en particular a los gays mexicanos, sobre los riesgos y consecuencias, liberación sexual y protección responsable. Alejandro Castillo se siente responsable de traer este tipo de conocimientos a la mayor cantidad de personas posibles.

“Me gustaría trabajar con un hospital u organización que pueda proveer más información,” él nos comentó. “Yo no puedo cambiar a mi país para que este pueda otorgar o facilitar el medicamento PrEP a todos. Me gustaría, pero no puedo. Lo que sí puedo hacer es comentarle al respecto y motivarlos a que lo usen, y si no, que usen condones, así como comentarles que si tienen HIV, que es posible que pueden vivir saludables y felices. No creo que exista alguna persona que hable sobre esto tan abiertamente aquí en México.”

La necesidad de este tipo de educación, de acuerdo con el actor es única en México y el cree que es algo con lo cual tiene que participar, ya

que es, indiscutiblemente uno de los más grandes actores de México, y cree tiene que compartir esta información la cual ha aprendido. ¿Acaso no hay otros actores que hagan lo mismo?

“No lo creo y te comento porque,” nos comentó. “Ellos viven en otros países donde hay menos estigma y quizás mas información al respecto, y viven con otro tipo de reglas. En este caso yo estoy en el medio. No estoy viviendo ni en Europa ni Estados Unidos. Yo vivo en un país católico que tiene mucha culpa sobre la vida sexual.”

“Estuve buscando a youtubers en Mexico que hablen sobre el SIDA porque yo tengo que saber todo al respecto y explicarle a la gente si me pregunta,” nos comentó. “Me gusta hablar con las personas, comentarles que se relajen y vivan su vida, que disfruten su vida sexual, y que sepan que todo tiene consecuencias y que, si quieren tener una vida parecida a la de un actor porno, que tomen sus precauciones. Yo siempre le comento a las personas que me rodean que los doctores tienen que ser sus amigos. Si no tienes un doctor el cual consideras un amigo, tienes que buscarte a otro. Si eres gay, trata de buscar a un doctor que sea gay para que sientas que le puedes contar exactamente todo lo que tiene que ver con tu comportamiento sin sentir que te juzgara.”

Y mientras tanto, Alejandro Castillo esta construyendo una vida que piensa extender a muchos años más. Al lado de la salud sexual, él está aprendiendo el negocio de la industria. En una era de redes sociales, y en una ciudad inundada con negocios que están promoviéndose a sí mismos sin descansar a todos aquellos que visitan la ciudad, el entiende que su papel es el de promover a su estrella. Y con el cine principal, editoras de libros y grabaciones de música, ya hace mucho que dejo de existir eso de tener un contrato exclusivo que te lance a la fama eterna.

“Ser exclusive significa que el principio (de una Carrera) puede ser un beneficio para ti porque puede apoyar a lanzar tu Carrera. Ellos promoverán tu nombre y serás parte de ese equipo. Eventualmente si quieres crecer, tendrás que buscar tu independencia, y una vez que tu nombre sea muy grande ya podrás hacer lo que quieras y tendrás a personas que estén contigo y te siguán a donde sea. Y si tienes paginas creadas por tus fans, ellos pagarán o irán a verte en un show en vivo. Pero al principio tendrás que trabajar duro y no veras resultados rápidamente. Todo toma su tiempo.”

“Quiero tener mi propio club,” el agrego. “Mi propio club de baile. Quiero escribir acerca de cómo puedes vivir tu propia vida con tus propias reglas. Quizás en tres o cuatro años será una buena idea compartir mis experiencias como un hombre gay haciendo porno gay y viviendo en una sociedad donde se hacen llamar bugas la mayor parte del tiempo.”

“Yo estoy en contacto con diferentes activistas,” el comento. “Mucha gente me sigue en las redes sociales sin ser gay. Ellos me siguen porque les interesa saber lo que pienso. Están encontrando un aliado. Estamos en el medio de todo.”

“Estamos creando cambios todos los días.”
