SHELLS OR CASTLES? By Eric Noel Roman

H

ere comes the meltdown. Winter is over, time to come out of the caverns that we enjoy calling home. It is springtime. No more snow. Trees will have leaves again. Animals emerge from hibernation. Wait a second, this is Florida. There is no reason to stay indoors during winter months. We have nothing but sunshine and palm trees.

Yet so many hermits lurking in our sands. Hello, I am king hermit. My shell is not the biggest one but it is the most isolated one. Even if I live a "social lifestyle" as a DJ and amatuer athlete, I keep to myself. The winter months led me down a path of isolation and depression, and finally reflection. As the new year approached I began looking for change. Little by little, the shell I put around my life began to crumble. I then noticed a beach filled with other shells, many open and welcoming to guests. I began to walk away from the solitude I noticed that this beach was filled with exquisite wildlife. At first, I found this beach to be overwhelming. Each new connection was awkward. My personality was brash, and unrefined. Communication with other species on this beach was frustrating. These other animals judged me and pushed me away. At least it is what I perceived. I was not off on my conclusion, but it was also my fears that made me unrelatable. However, I needed to face fears of change. I needed to embrace that maybe by opening up and getting close to other wildlife I would become a better crab.

Over the span of a few months I took the time to look at my progress. I realized that instead of having a shell, I built a castle. One built with confidence in knowing that as long as I trust my abilities I could reach my goals. Some of my goals are easy to reach others are ever evolving works of art. Combined, these goals add layers to a resilient structure that I enjoy letting others see. In addition to new accolades, I noticed that I was not alone. I had friends that I shared moments with. Times of sadness, failure, celebration, and success. I am not looking to flaunt a lifestyle of flashing lights and shiny shells and a large entourage of animals. Instead, I promote a life where interaction should be honest, genuine, but most important, comfortable. One should always reach past a comfort zone and explore the outside world. However, it should not be done alone and can be more rewarding when those life lessons are shared with others with which you are connected. Get out of your shells and see what the world holds for you.

WHAT MAKES US CLIQUE

MICHAEL MOODY, BALLBUSTERS SOFTBALL TEAM MANAGER By Andy Armano

T

his series focuses on individuals who give to our community and make a positive impact on the lives of others. Often it is through our personal adversities that we discover who we are and transform the challenges into strength. Michael Moody helped found the Broward Ballbusters, a softball team for men and women in recovery that helps give them an outlet for fun, friendship, and support. He has been the team manager for eight years. Andy Armano: Tell us a little bit about how the Broward Ballbusters started. Michael Moody: Sports and beer go together. For a while, most softball teams were sponsored by bars. But people would say, “You know, I've decided to turn my life around and stop using drugs and alcohol because I have to. But now, how do I have fun and do the things I love? It's probably not the greatest environment for me to be in if the team is sponsored by a bar and their social part of it is to go to the bar after the game. So we wanted to create an environment where we could go take part in that. It was a great outlet for people to have fun and play sports and be part of something. We were . . . The Bad News Bears comes to mind. We had a lot of people who hadn't played before or had played in high school or grade school, but wanted to give it a shot. We didn't win a lot of games in the beginning. Of course we looked fabulous. We had wonderful uniforms because we are a gay team, and we wanted to look terrific. But the players were sober and the league wasn't really sure what to do with us for the first couple of seasons. We had a few key players that had experience and they really helped the new players get better and better. 16 | OutClique.com

AA MM

How was the team received by the community?

At most softball games there aren't too many people in the stands. Most softball games it's like, yeah, somebody's boyfriend, their partner, their mom and dad will come watch them play every once in a while. But the Ballbusters would have packed stands and people standing around, but we had an immediate fan base! We weren't really that good, but sort of created a community around it. People in the league saw the excitement and our support, and that was attractive to them. Then they got to know us and were like, “These guys are awesome!” Eventually it got to be like, “Well, can I play with you guys?” I felt this would really be a success when players can go play on the next level up and be welcomed onto those teams and sought after by those teams. Even though they're from that weird team, which, because we kept showing up they're like, “They're not that weird and they are having a ball.”

AA

When did you realize that what you were doing was really making a difference for people?

MM

Early on every once in a while I would get a phone call from someone who knew me in the league saying, “I have a brother who's really in trouble and I don't know what to do. How do I help him get help? What do I do?” And then an amazing thing happened. Players from other teams that were struggling with addiction would call me and go, “I need help and I want to play on your team.” That really made me pause and ask the question, “So why wouldn't we continue to do this?” There are people that say to me, “The Ballbusters saved my life. I don't think that I would have been able to get my life back on

track and get out of the darkness of addiction if I wasn’t shown how much fun and joy I could experience without drugs and alcohol.” Because that is a challenge that most people face, especially when they're starting out in recovery. They are like, “My life is over, I'm not going to have any fun again.”

AA

Do you find that your fans get attached to the team the same way the players do?

MM

There's a guy who's been going to Ballbuster games since they first started. He's been in recovery for a long time. He’s not an athlete, just a supporter. He comes to games all the time, but he travels a lot for work. This is a guy who, on Facebook, when they announce the games, if he knows he can't be at the games he still posts the message, “Go Ballbusters! I know you're going to have a great time today.” From like Amsterdam, he's posting this. You see that on a national level and die-hard fans for sports teams. I had no idea that any kind of thing like that would happen around a silly softball team. But it does. There are people that don't miss games. That’s just baffling to us, and it's also beautiful. Turns out it isn’t silly after all.

AA MM

How do you feel about the future prospects for the team?

We're now in our 13th year, which means that's 26 seasons that we've played ball and we haven't missed any season. And here's to 26 more. I am not going to lie and say I’m not tired. It’s a year-round commitment and I am ready to step back a bit. I still want to be able to go set up my chair on Sundays and watch the team play, though. I still want to be able to go set up my chair and watch those Ballbusters play. I'm excited because more people are getting involved and working hard to ensure that it continues. I'm blessed by that and I'm excited by it. OutClique.com | 17

A CURE FOR HIV/AIDS?

DON’T UNCORK THE CHAMPAGNE JUST YET. By Tony Adams

I

n the history of HIV/AIDS, March of 2019 will be remembered for the announcement that, twelve years and many failed attempts after the first cure, a second person has been cured of AIDS. In 2007, Timothy Ray Brown, now 51 and living in Palm Springs, became known as the “Berlin Patient” when he was cured of both AIDS and cancer by a bone marrow transplant. A second man, known only as the “London Patient” has been cured through the same difficult procedure carrying frightening complications. Scientists temper our euphoria over the possible vanquishing of HIV by reminding us that the successful transplants are risky, often life-threatening, and not easily replicated. On the other hand, this second cure demonstrates that even though we are probably many years away from a wide spread cure, a road to it has been identified. What is the reaction to this news in South Florida where new infection rates continue to lead the nation at an alarming rate? Steve Stagon, founder and current board member of the World AIDS Museum in Wilton Manors says, “It was exciting to hear about the London Patient, but not as exciting as the original Berlin Patient. I’m actually surprised it took so long to duplicate those results. “In our HIV support group we’ve extensively discussed and researched the Berlin Patient and why this worked for him, and why it’s not a practical application for a general cure. It’s simply too dangerous. The HIV infection rate in South Florida is among the nation’s highest, but I think Broward County is taking the necessary steps to reduce that through testing, treatment, PrEP, and PEP.” When asked if he believes he will live to see a cure for HIV/AIDS, Stagon says, “I take this 22 | OutClique.com

news very skeptically and realize that it’s only a cure for a select group of people also infected with another disease that requires a bone marrow transplant. There are two basic types of ‘cures,’ an eradication cure that would remove all virus from the body, versus a functional cure that would remove HIV from the blood and remove any negative effects like developing AIDS or premature aging. I don’t believe I will live to see an eradication cure but I might see a functional cure. I am very grateful for the drugs we currently have and the improvements that have been made to them over the last 20+ years, and I’m looking forward to the next generation of drugs such as monthly injections instead of daily pills, and less toxic drugs.” Lorenzo Robertson, Prevention Interventions Coordinator at The Pride Center Equality Park, says, “It sounds like this could be a game changer, but only if the process can be replicated more frequently and with more diversity in the future recipients of this ‘cure.’ As a same-gender-loving man living with HIV/ AIDS, I am extremely excited for myself and the many others who are thriving with HIV/AIDS.” When asked if this news will impact the problem of “stigmatization” of those with HIV/ AIDS, Robertson says, “No, because the stigma associated with HIV/AIDS will still exist even after there is a cure. The stigma is about how people are viewed and labeled because of their behavior or perceived behavior. It has less to do with the virus and more to do with how people are judged morally." Stagon adds, “The stigmatization of HIV/AIDS is primarily caused by silence. The London Patient brought HIV/ AIDS back into the news temporarily, but it will take a lot more to significantly reduce the stigmatization of those with the virus.” How should we read the headlines about a cure for HIV/AIDS? With cautious and realistic optimism.

AN EYE FOR DESIGN

SOUTHERN SANDS’ ROMAN FOSTER By Denny Patterson

Photos By Sach | www.SachAdGroup.com

S

outhern Sands Design owner and operator, Roman Foster, first opened the doors to his unique store in November 2017. Combining the best of where he has lived and worked, many of his pieces are custom made. Growing up in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains and now living in South Florida, he wanted to bring a design style that he describes as mountains meet sea. Foster is also a floral designer for events and weddings and honed his craft while working at private membership clubs in North Carolina and Florida. Southern Sands Design provides individuals and designers an option to find unique accent pieces that will work with any home. This is the first business Foster has ever owned, and he is most excited about the freedom owning your own business provides.

26 | OutClique.com

Southern Sands is located within Island City Plaza at 1436 NE 26th Street in Wilton Manors. I spoke more with Foster about the business and his passion for design and décor. Thank you so much for taking the time to chat with me, Roman. Can you tell me more about Southern Sands Design? Southern Sands is a concept store located in Wilton Manors featuring unique interiors and floral design. The décor is authentically crafted and nature inspired. We offer one-of-a-kind art and décor, as well as expert personalized floral design for weddings, events, homes, and businesses. We specialize in getting to know our clients and assisting them in creating a vision for their home or event that reflects their individuality and encourages their happiness

within their space. How did you get the idea/concept for the business? With the majority of today’s dÊcor being streamlined from large factories, I wanted to create a design store that would break from the mold and seek to feature unique creations from craftsman and artists like myself. I derive the essence of my look from my Appalachian Mountain roots, my appreciation for nature, and my longtime love for coastal life. Natural materials and motifs are at the heart of my decorating style. Hardwoods, native foliage, fauna-inspired materials, and earthy palettes are utilized to create one-of-a-kind pieces that function to provide the home with a tranquil escape from hectic modern-day urban life. Has this business been a long-time dream of yours? Having my own showroom and design studio has long been in the works. A dream that came to fruition with a great deal of foresight, hard work, and an immense amount of creativity. Owning your own business is no easy task. However, Southern Sands has opened a whole new world of opportunity, allowing me to explore my own personal style and develop exclusive designs. Have you always had a passion for this type of work? Even as a child, I looked forward to decorating for Christmas, Halloween, or any event that required a little extra pizzazz. Growing up, I loved creating and crafting with my father who taught industrial arts. In high school, I was involved with the prom committee and I obsessed over every detail from linens, to flowers, to the perfect theme song. Unlike other hobbies and interests that came and went, decorating/designing is a true passion that always came with ease. It was something that didn’t require a lot of thought. It is simply in my nature. What did you do before opening Southern Sands Design? I have a unique, diverse background within OutClique.com | 27

the design industry that provides me with a one-of-a-kind perspective. I received a BA in English from UNC Chapel Hill and a Masters in English from Western Carolina University. My background in language arts inspired me to utilize floral/interior design to create spaces and pieces that tell a story. When selecting items on buying trips or creating in my studio, I gravitate towards “conversation pieces.” I have worked as a photographer, managed a flora studio, served as a decorator for country clubs, and most recently prior to opening Southern Sands, I was Director of Member Events at Tower Club in Fort Lauderdale. What are some goals and accomplishments you would like to see Southern Sands achieve? South Florida homes are often decorated in a sleek, clean contemporary style. Although visually beautiful, without a touch of warmth many such homes risk coming across as cold or uninviting. Southern Sands has the potential to become South Florida’s go-to-destination for one-of-a-kind pieces that provide character and the perfect contrast within a modern space. From the beginning, Southern Sands has sought to give back to the community and contribute to its culture. We have partnered with several of the community’s not-forprofits for event décor/fundraisers. We also host a bi-monthly complimentary local artist showcase and reception. As business grows, we hope to continue to give back and enrich the community that supports us. How would you say Southern Sands is unique and stands out from other similar businesses? Our desire to get to know our clients and provide custom tailored service is a big part of what makes us so special. Also, because we specialize in handcrafted unique pieces, Southern Sands cannot help but stand out from other design stores. My father, Larry Foster, uses timber from our land in the mountains of North Carolina to make the beautifully crafted live-edge tables sold in the store. I use natural driftwood to make lamps, sconces, and sculptures. Our all-natural soaps and candles are handcrafted utilizing pure essential oils along with organic or wild herbs. I also source 28 | OutClique.com

from talented local and international artists whose creative designs mesh with our style. In addition, we salvage and repurpose vintage industrial pieces. These exclusive showroom offerings combined with our expert floral design studio makes Southern Sands a unique destination within the design world. Do you think Southern Sands has been beneficial to the South Florida community? It is my hope that the South Florida community continues to show us the love and support that they did in our inaugural year of business. I anticipate that more and more people will discover our showroom and incorporate these special pieces within their homes. Our décor creations, flora design studio, and community involvement have the potential to make a positive impact in South Florida for years to come! It sounds like Southern Sands has been received well by the community so far. I am grateful to the many faithful clients who continue to spread the word about Southern Sands and what we do. I have been more than pleased with our success and accomplishments during the first year of business. Southern Sands was recently showcased in Go Riverwalk magazine as their

“Small Business of the Month,” featured in Florida Home & Garden magazine’s “Design Buzz,” appeared on the popular “SoFlo Home Project” show with design expert Martin Amado, and won the Salvation Army Red Shield ReDesign Bash’s – “People’s Choice Award.” What is the number one thing you will do to make sure Southern Sands continues to be a success? Southern Sands is committed to providing service that exceeds expectation. I know our product is creative, authentic, and unique. A great product combined with excellent client driven service will ensure we continue to succeed in our endeavors. Although you are still relatively new, do you have any plans to eventually expand the business? Many people who come into Southern Sands comment on its calming “Zen” nature. We give superior attention and care to each customer. Maintaining and improving on our friendly small business qualities are my main priority. At least for the near future, our expansions will come in the form of more diverse selections from artists we represent. A larger, more equipped design studio is also in the works!

MAINTAINING A TRADITION

AN INTERVIEW WITH GAY POET JERICHO BROWN By Gregg Shapiro

J

ericho Brown is a gay poet. Poets are known for their economy of language. That said, as a storyteller (and one telling his own story with a blend of humor and honesty), Brown has a lot to say. The author of two highly regarded poetry collections, Please and The New Testament, Brown’s latest is the highly anticipated forthcoming The Tradition (Copper Canyon Press, 2019), out in April 2019 in time for National Poetry Month. What follows is some of what we talked about in advance of the publication of The Tradition, as well as his April 2019 appearance at the Mission Creek Festival in Iowa City. Gregg Shapiro: Jericho, which came first for you, writing poetry or reading books of poetry? Jericho Brown: This is a great question! Reading poems came first because poems are available to us before we can actually be very good (writers of poems). There are great poems available to you when you are five years old or even before you have speech, maybe! At least to me they were available.

GS JB

Do you remember what you read or what was read to you?

I grew up in a black church. There were always occasions for which young people had to get up and recite a bible verse or something or to sing or to be in this play or that pageant. You can be on the debate or the drill team or the swim team, and you can do this among a series of churches. Everything you can do in the world [laughs], you don’t really have to go to the world to do if you’re in the right church affiliation. I was in that kind of church. If you went on an Easter Sunday to hear young people recite their Easter speeches, you would also hear somebody reciting “Ego Tripping” by Nikki Giovanni or “I, Too” by Langston Hughes or “Still I Rise” by Maya Angelou.

GS

Something by Gwendolyn Brooks, too?

34 | OutClique.com

JB

“We Real Cool” is something that would be recited, though they had no idea what it actually meant or said [laughs]. Those are the kinds of things I was hearing or seeing or reading when I was growing up. Then, when I was in elementary, middle and high school, I spent a lot of time in libraries. I think the idea that rhyme is attractive comes to us very early. When you’re very young you notice and get caught up in the music of rhyme. I know I did. My mother distinctly remembers me walking around the house saying words that rhyme before I was in the first grade. When I could finally write, I was writing lines and poems that I thought were good, that really aren’t that good, and my mom would put them on the refrigerator. The idea of revision wouldn’t come to me until high school.

GS JB

How did you arrive at the name Jericho Brown?

I was living in New Orleans and I had a great full-time job. When you have a full-time job, you go to bed at a certain time. I had a dream that I was in a hot and sweaty waiting room filled with men. You know how whoever is beyond the waiting room door is taking too long and things get anxious? People were coming in on time, and in spite of that, they would not be seen anywhere near on time. There was a woman with a little box haircut,

a little frame around her face, calling names. When a name was called, they would go through a door that was just beyond her little desk. She got to the name Jericho, and repeated it. I realized that I was in a dream and that the law of the dream was that if no one got up to go beyond the door, I would never get up. I would just be in this dream with this woman saying Jericho forever. I said, “I’m going to be Jericho” and she looked at me strangely as if to say, “Why are you announcing that to me? Don’t you want to go through the door?” And then I woke up. It was some weird time. I decided to go for a drive toward the [French] Quarter. I got to a bar. I met someone and he asked me my name. I said, “My name is Jericho.” He said, “Oh, so you’re straightly shut up.” I said, “What?” He said it literally translates to “literally shut up." Loosely, it means “the fence." That’s why the city was called Jericho, because of the wall, the fence. I had been thinking about changing my name for a while before that. My friends were all making fun of me about it. I was actually thinking of changing my name to Rooster, that’s how bad it got. My birth name is Nelson Demery III. That third always did drive me crazy. I didn’t feel free to write about my family with my family name, at least not at that time. I was finally getting poems published. I would see them in print and get all excited, then I would see what seemed to me like my grandad or dad’s name and the gift of seeing the poem in print would be taken away at that moment. I wanted the gift back.

GS JB

last name would be. I knew I wanted it to be four syllables, like Michael Jackson and Diana Ross [laughs]. I decided my name would be Jericho Brown that summer, I think I changed my name in 2002.

GS JB

Does your driver’s license say Jericho Brown?

GS

In what ways would you say that being gay inspires and influences your

Uh-uh. My mother would kill me [laughs]! I have a business, in Atlanta, Jericho Brown, Poet. So, if you make a check out to Jericho Brown, I can indeed cash it [laughs].

work?

JB

I think in every way, and therefore in no way at all. Thinking about queer poetic, there’s no other way for me to be able to proceed since it is who I am. It turns out to be all of my perception. That doesn’t mean that being black isn’t all of my perception, too. That doesn’t mean that being Southern is all of my perception. That doesn’t mean that coming from a kind of impoverished background isn’t part of my perception. I think it allows for me to be able to see things. If I wasn’t queer, I wouldn’t be a poet, that’s certain. I think being queer allows me to see opportunities in language that can create for me an existence in a world that keeps trying to erase the fact of my being.

In essence, you were reclaiming your work?

Yes! I changed my name to Jericho starting that night. Later, I saw a friend of mine from high school, whose last name was Brown, in a gay bar. He had been very closeted up until that point. When I was in high school, I hung out with Leonardo Brown, Shanetta Brown and Jason Brown. I was Nelson Demery III; the only one whose name was not Brown. When I saw him, I instantly offered him a drink having figured out what my 36 | OutClique.com

The initiative is being shaped and supported by community representatives comprised of thirteen LGBTQ+ community leaders and advocates. The program has been made possible by support from the following Community Foundation of Broward Funds: Richard Frisby and Edward Burkhart Fund, Gay and Lesbian Broward Community Fund, Edwin A. and Jane N. Huston Fund, Everett H. Metcalf, Jr. Unrestricted Fund, and Mary N. Porter Community Impact Fund. The Community Foundation of Broward grant is part of its Broward Pride program, with the

goal of uniting Broward’s diverse community to ensure equality, justice and inclusion of Broward’s LGBT neighbors. The program aims to create a more inclusive Museum experience to better serve the community, formulate and enhance inclusivity practices, and ultimately improve accessibility along with perceptions of accessibility. The advisory committee has been working with Museum staff to create a formal LGBTQ+ engagement strategy focused on community partnerships, staff training, target marketing and specialized programming and events. Museum staff member, Megan Scutti, leads the initiative to enhance the facilities and programs to become a more welcoming partner to LGBTQ+ organizations, individuals and families. Joseph Cox, Museum President and CEO, said, “Each and every day the Museum welcomes

the entire community into our programs and exhibits. This incredible grant from the Community Foundation of Broward will allow us to specifically welcome all LGBTQ+ individuals and families to the Museum and allow us to work with our Task Force to reach out to LGBTQ+ partner agencies.” Museum staff recently participated in the Pride Fort Lauderdale beach day with activities for families. Staff will also participate in the annual Wilton Manors Stonewall Pride Festival on June 17, 2019 with a number of fun science activities and demonstrations. On June 22, 2019 the Museum will host its own Pride Day Celebration with activities for all ages, including LGBTQ+ science speakers, movies, a program on the science of rainbows, demonstrations and more. Reduced admission will be $5 and City of Fort Lauderdale residents will enjoy free admission.

COMEDIAN AND ACTOR HAL SPARKS

By Denny Patterson

Hal, thank you so much for taking the time to chat with me. I am a big fan of Queer as Folk, and I never thought I would ever get the chance to talk with the OG Michael Novotny. [Laughs] It’s my pleasure. I would like to start off by talking about Queer as Folk. Has there been any more confirmation about a reboot? No. We have our antennas up all the time, and we are constantly on the lookout for some ideas. I think the cast in coordination with some of the writers and certainly the execs on how they think it should happen are all for it. So, that’s not the question. The question will come from either Showtime deciding to do it, or the execs. Until that happens, we are all just kind of floating down the river blindfolded. If a reboot does happen, will the original cast come back and pick up where they left off? I think some time will have to pass, and it will be more of a recognition. I think we all aged fairly well, but you know, it would have to 42 | OutClique.com

U

nique. That is the word that can practically sum up actor and comedian Hal Sparks. Many of you may know him as the loveable and charming Michael Novotny on Showtime’s groundbreaking series, Queer as Folk, while others may remember him in Dude, Where’s My Car? and as the host of E!’s Talk Soup. No matter where or how you may know Sparks, he is one of a kind. In addition to television work, Sparks is a LGBTQ ally and outspoken activist who regularly participates in charitable events for organizations like the AIDS Walk and Farm Sanctuary. However, stand up comedy will always be one of his greatest loves. No matter what project he is working on, he will always schedule some time for stand up. I had the absolute pleasure of chatting more with Sparks about his current and upcoming projects, and I asked the question that is still on many people’s mind – will there be a Queer as Folk reboot?

pick up a couple years down the line. If they decide not to do that, that’s fine, but that’s my general feeling. Also, people like to have a sense of continuity about characters, and fans of the show are going to assume you are alive and doing stuff during that time they didn’t see you. Make it a natural shift opposed to picking up 45 minutes later. What direction would you like to see the show head toward, and what changes would need to be made in order for it to be a success today? In the beginning, the story was about gay marriage. That was the main controversy. Now, the relationships like Michael and Ben and Lindsay and Melanie, I think we need to see if they stood the test of time as a way of diminishing any critique that existed in the first place. Those preconceived notions of gay relationships. I would love to see what the cast’s friendship base and circle of friends look like now, because certainly it would have widened since the show. I think what you are getting at is should the show be more diverse

and cover more characters, and I think the answer is of course, but it needs to happen organically. I think there needs to be a genuine reflection of what’s going on these days, and I think it should genuinely reflect the community. I read in other interviews that you were very eager to play the role of Michael. Why is that? Because it was extraordinarily well-written and it worked. I was just coming off Talk Soup and just did Dude, Where My Car?, and I was very aware that dramatic roles, especially dramatic roles of value, were very limited to me since I am a comedian. It was a miracle how it timed out. Ultimately, I didn’t understand anybody’s reservations about doing it, and I was puzzled by the what ifs. You know, the fears some people had. It certainly worked to my advantage because had there been more people auditioning, I would not have gotten it. Was it at all difficult being a straight actor playing a gay role and were you ever afraid of any negative consequences in terms of your career? As far as negative consequences, I guess there technically have been some. I have lost some projects over the years, but on the upside, I didn’t have to work for bigots, so it was a blessing. Why would I want to work with those kind of people? As far as difficulty with my character, I don’t think it had anything to do with my sexuality. It was trying to convey Michael’s personality. His optimism and open heartedness would get him into trouble, and he would not see the bad things coming, but that was part of his charm. It was also very challenging to play him because there were a lot of scenes where he got a lot of bad news that hit him very hard. When you have to reshoot that 20 times and reset to happy a bunch of times, it is a lot of work. What do you think Mikey is up to these days? I certainly hope Ben and Brian are still in the picture. I think he is still in touch with Brian, but I dearly believe he and Ben are still happily married. I think Hunter is better off for having them as parents and I think more than likely that they have another child. Either through adoption or other means. I think it would make a lot of sense.

Do you believe Queer as Folk paved a path for other LGBTQ representation on television? I would like to think so. I certainly hope so. I guess yes, technically, but there is not a lot of representation like Queer as Folk. Everything is still relatively safe in a lot of fronts as far as television goes and there’s value in that. There is nothing wrong with it, but Queer as Folk would often be compared like to Sex and the City. I was like, really? When did they deal with addiction, substance abuse, domestic violence and HIV? Like never. I think the depth of how we dealt with stuff, I would like to see more of that, and I think there is room for it these days, but unfortunately, it sort of happens in isolation these days. It seems if a series has a gay character or gay couple, they are in constant torment or the source of comedy, and I think there needs to be sort of a deeper understanding of the interaction of gay characters on television. I think that would be the next step. What other projects do you currently have going on? Your publicist said you are shooting a show in China. Can you tell us a little more about that? Yes. It is a travel show and they needed a host. I am fluent in Chinese and I am so invested in the culture, it’s kind of just a normal part of my life. So, this opportunity to go to China and experience it in sort of a deeper and more personal way, it was something I could not pass up. I am shooting in different cities and experiencing everything from big metropolitan areas to very small, personal stories told by townspeople. Do you have any upcoming comedy specials we should be on the lookout for? I am writing the next one now. I shot a new hour written show last year that will be out this spring, and then I will shoot this one this spring and it will be out mid-summer. Between doing regular acting work and other projects, it is hard to get stand up dates scheduled, but I always make a point to. When this China show came up, it threw a monkey wrench in everything because it’s not like I’m shooting in New York or LA and can postpone a couple of nights. I am basically not speaking English for a couple months. OutClique.com | 43

SPA SEACRETS ADULT ACNE By Brian David Douglas

W

oof! What a stud! You’ve found your dream guy on the dating app and finally have your first date this evening. OMG! You look in the mirror and realize you woke up this morning with a volcanic-size zit on your face. Why is this happening? Aren’t I too old to be getting acne? Acne is caused by excessive skin oil, bacteria, inflammation and sticky skin cells blocking your pores. Adult acne can be frustrating to treat because the products you used as a teenager are no longer effective. Teenage skin regenerates quickly, but as we age our skin becomes more sensitive and dehydrated causing acne to develop deeper and more painful. Some things that affect adult acne are: Fluctuating Hormones Whether it’s due to menopause or low T, as we age our hormones fluctuate. Hormone replacement therapies help, but can also send your body’s hormones through a rollercoaster ride. If you are taking testosterone for example, you may notice flair ups around the time of your dosage - especially in areas like the chest and back. Stress There is a proven link between our level of stress and acne flare-ups. When we are stressed our body produces more of the androgen hormone. This stimulates the sebaceous glands causing them to produce more oil. This oil can clog the pores and create an environment for acnecausing bacteria to thrive.

Poor Skin Care Habits Over-cleansing and over-exfoliation can actually be detrimental to the skin’s health. It can strip away essential moisture and irritate the skin leaving it more vulnerable to infection.

Please, please stop picking at and squeezing your face! This creates more inflammation, can cause further outbreaks and even worse – scarring. Acne is a true medical condition and, in many cases, the best option is to consult with a dermatologist. There are many facial treatments and skin care products that can help keep acne at bay. It’s always best to find a licensed esthetician that you trust other than experimenting with drugstore products. Here are my favorite products from Repechage for treating adult acne: 1. Hydra Medic® Face Wash is a deep cleansing formula with Willow Bark Extract to gently exfoliate excess grime buildup, helping to prevent a greasy feel. 2. Hydra Medic® Astringent is formulated with plant extracts to balance the skin, leaving it clean and refreshed. 3. Hydra Medic® Mattifying Moisturizer is a non-greasy formula which helps reduce the appearance of shine while leaving skin with a soft, velvety-matte finish. 4. Sea Mud Perfecting Mask deep cleans and helps absorb excess oil, reducing the appearance of shine. The best pore-shrinker!

PRIDE JOURNEY

PROVINCETOWN/CAPE COD By Joey Amato

B

y now, most of you know I march to the beat of my own drummer, so when I decided to visit a summer time destination in the winter, people weren’t surprised. Cape Cod is known for attracting throngs of LGBTQ beach and partygoers to its northernmost tip, Provincetown. Having never been to P-Town, the locals found it surprising that I would visit during the winter, when the towns population is a fraction of what it is during the summer.

My first stop on my Cape Cod journey was the town of Hyannis, located about mid-way up the cape. On the suggestion of a friend of mine, I booked a stay at the Sea Street Inn, a lovely 5-bedroom bed and breakfast located just blocks from the ocean and minutes away from the historic Kennedy Compound. The Sea Street Inn is not your typical B&B. Upon arrival, I was greeted by the proprietor Adrian and offered a lobster roll as a “welcome to the Cape” gift. The property was designed by Adrian and his wife Xenia in 2018 and features a beautiful art gallery, sitting area and dining solarium where guests can enjoy breakfast or their morning coffee. Adrian is a classically trained French chef who studied under JeanGeorges Vongerichten, so the Sea Street Inn offers a dinner menu that rivals any 4-star restaurant. I had the opportunity to sample some of the best food in recent memory including a delectable smoked trout and brie dish in addition to a crab BLT. A short drive from the Sea Street Inn is the John F. Kennedy Hyannis Museum, a multimedia exhibit designed to highlight the days JFK spent on Cape Cod relaxing with family, entertaining world leaders, and sailing on the ocean, one of his favorite hobbies. The Museum’s exhibits feature videos and photographs spanning the years 1934 to 1963. In addition to photography, an orientation 62 | OutClique.com

video narrated by Walter Cronkite depicts the President’s experiences on the Cape. I decided to take an afternoon adventure to Nantucket on the high-speed ferry, which whisks you to the oasis in about an hour. Even in the winter, Nantucket is gorgeous. With limited time to explore the island, I wasted no time and headed straight to the Whaling Museum to view their Festival of Trees exhibition which transforms the museum into a festive winter wonderland for the entire month of December. The highlight of the museum is the Whale Hunt Gallery which explores all aspects of the demanding and dangerous trade of 18th century whaling. Although I am against this trade, it was an important part of the area’s history. The centerpiece of the gallery is the skeleton of a 46-foot male sperm whale, which died on Siasconset beach on January 1, 1998. Nantucket is filled with wonderful boutiques and family-owned restaurants. I asked around and almost everyone on the island recommended I try the Lola Burger at Lola 41. It was probably the most expensive hamburger I have ever ordered at $22, but the perfectly cooked burger was served with Cabot Cheddar Cheese, a red onion compote, and foie sauce. One of my favorite things to do is pair a burger with a nice glass of Pinot Noir. It was the perfect way to end my journey before heading back to the mainland.

About halfway between Hyannis and P-Town is The Cape Cod Museum of Natural History, a small museum which also serves as a nature education center which is worth visiting if you have some time to spare on your way up the Cape. The museum offers guests a variety of programs, classes, lectures, panel discussions, and interactive exhibits that reveal the many facets of Cape Cod’s natural wonders. Driving into Provincetown for the first time was magical. I felt like I was exploring a small island town filled with narrow cobblestone streets, dozens of art galleries, quaint restaurants and of course LGBTQ establishments. The more time I spent in P-Town, the more I began to realize why people are in love with this destination. You feel like you’re in a gay oasis a million miles away from the rest of society and free to do whatever you want, without judgment. Even the straight community that visits the town is accepting of LGBTQ people and everyone is extremely welcoming and friendly. One of my first stops in P-Town was the Provincetown Art Association & Museum, a collective gallery exhibiting the works of local artists, many of whom identify as LGBTQ. One half of the space is dedicated to museum caliber works while the other half serves as a gallery space where people have the opportunity to purchase local art. There are many lodging options in P-Town, but I decided to stay at Land’s End Inn for its location at the tip of the peninsula. My room, which was called the Library Room, offered unobstructed views of both the sunrise and sunset and is located just a few minutes from Herring Cove Beach. Antique lovers will be in heaven at Land’s End Inn. Its décor is more traditional than I usually enjoy but lends nicely to the property’s rich history. In addition to complimentary breakfast, the Inn also offers a daily wine reception where you can mingle with other hotel guests.

Surprisingly, 2018 was the first time Provincetown held a gay pride festival. I guess when the town is gay all the time, people didn’t find the need for one. This year’s festival is scheduled for May 30 through June 2, 2019. Last year’s festival featured a rainbow laser installation, a disco dance party and a pride sashay/stroll. Bear Week will take place this July 2019 and is an annual gathering of…bears. It’s one of the largest and busiest theme weeks in Provincetown, attracting tens of thousands of men and hosting dozens of parties and shows. Another fun event is P-Town’s annual Carnival, which will take place August 15-25, 2019 and celebrates the towns LGBTQ culture. To get the best view of the town, climb to the top of Pilgrim Monument which was constructed to honor the Pilgrims’ first landing in Provincetown. President Theodore Roosevelt laid the cornerstone in 1907 and the 252-foot tower was completed in 1910. The only thing I didn’t like about Provincetown was the cost of food. An inexpensive dinner can easily run about $30. I tried finding a few less expensive places to dine and stumbled upon Canteen. Try their homemade clam chowder, you won’t be disappointed. If you want something sweet, head to Purple Feather Café and indulge in one of their special desserts or famous white hot chocolate. During my stay, the gay bars were a bit slow, but this is something that I expected. Visiting in the winter helped me navigate the town easier than during the summer months and when I return, I’ll feel like a local. If you aren’t into crowds but still want to get a feel for the town, I would recommend visiting during slower season…May or October. Otherwise, be prepared for one non-stop party if you decide to visit this summer. I know I’ll be back! Enjoy the Journey!

COMPLAINT TRENDS IN OUR MARKETPLACE 2017 TO 2018 Rod Davis CEO BBB serving Southeast Florida and the Caribbean

O

ur BBB receives over 40,000 complaints each year from consumers about businesses in Southeast Florida and the Caribbean. While it is good to be on some top 10 lists, being the top industry on the complaint list is not a good thing. For 2018, online retailers topped the list with 3,019 complaints, a 220% increase over the complaint total for 2017. Prompting the kind of consumer complaints with online retailers include: 1. Delays or failure to deliver orders 2. Poor quality products 3. Refund issues 4. Customer service issues The internet has made it easier and less costly to start online businesses and while many startups are good quality businesses, many are not and some just get overwhelmed by the volume of new sales. Since the businesses can be located in other states it also makes it more challenging to address issues if they do arise. Here is a sample complaint from a consumer against one of the online retailers generating significant complaints: This company takes your money, but never sends you the order! I purchased an item in Oct. After still not having a ship date weeks later, I decided to cancel the order. They charged my paypal account immediately and received payment. They have not answered their phone, answered my emails, or even responded to my open Paypal case. This company is a complete scam. They are getting away with robbing people and never shipping the items. How can this be allowed? And so far Paypal hasn't done anything except open a case and allow them 2 weeks to respond!!! I am furious. I have read the reviews of this company (wish I did it before ordering) and they are ALL negative, they have done the same thing to many customers! 68| OutClique.com

As this consumers points out, he should have checked out the business first! Here are a few tips to follow when buying online from a retailer: 1. Go to www.BBB.org and review the history of the business. How long has the business been in operation? Do they appear to be stable and have a good marketplace history? What type of complaints are being filed and how is the business responding to the complaints? Does the business respond professionally and are the complaints sporadic or do they show a pattern that might extend to your transaction should you purchase from them? Look at other internet sites and see if they have similar information about the business. You can always find a good business to work with, so don’t spend your dollars on a business that does not do a good job of taking care of customers. 2. Review the delivery schedule and return policy of the business before you purchase. Well run businesses will let you know approximate dates/times to deliver and will provide routine updates to keep you, as a valued customer, informed about the progress of your order. If this information is not outlined on the website and the complaints indicate the company does not communicate with their customers in a timely and professional manner, you may want to move on to another option. 3. Product quality and warranty coverage are other issues to evaluate, especially if you are making a significant purchase. If you see complaints about the quality of the product and the business routinely challenges coverage of the product under the warranty terms, you are taking a big risk to purchase from the business. Look for another option where the product quality is good and the business demonstrates a commitment to stand behind their products and services.

Several other industries saw significant increases in complaints from 2017 to 2018. The moving industry (companies and brokers) experienced a large jump in complaints. Most complaints in this industry relate to: 1. Increases in cost from estimates to final amounts due. When searching for a moving company it is essential to find a business that will conduct a thorough in house inspection to establish a solid price for your move. By checking the information online about a moving company you can also see any businesses that are routinely receiving complaints about price increases. Find a business that works closely enough with their customers to set solid prices that rarely need adjustment. The government provides good information to assist consumers at www.FMCSA.DOT.gov/Protect-Your-Move. 2. Damage when household moves take 70| OutClique.com

place is another key complaint driver for this industry. It is always smart to pay a little extra to have full insurance to protect your goods since some damage is likely to happen with most moves. The basic coverage only provides consumers with 60 cents on the pound and that coverage will not even begin to cover the cost to replace a TV or other items. Just as the customer indicated in the complaint earlier, the best thing to do to avoid problems is to do enough research in advance to find a good business before you make a purchase. Use www.BBB.org and other resources (family, friends, and other research sites) to find a trustworthy business with a good reputation. While no business is perfect, a good business will proactively work with customers with legitimate concerns to find a solution. Begin your search at www.BBB.org/Self.

UNITED METHODIST VOICES FOR INCLUSION By Pastor Jill Auman

T

he United Methodist Church (UMC) is the second largest Protestant denomination with approximately 80 million members across the world and 12 million in the United States. General Conference occurred in February to discuss and vote on language related to human sexuality in the church’s official guidebook called, “The Discipline.” Some United Methodists are grieving after a narrow margin vote which was hotly contested preserved a statement which excludes LGBTQ persons from ordination and marriage in the UMC. Pastors, Bishops, and leaders wanting to convey love, inclusion, and respect have been working overtime to seek ways to boldly proclaim opposition to this decision. Church leaders gathered to own and to celebrate their church’s diversity and inclusion of all. “We are a diverse and inclusive congregation in the heart of Fort Lauderdale committed to serving our Lord Jesus Christ through passionate worship, intentional discipleship, and engaged mission work that embodies the good news of Jesus to all.” Congregations, conferences, districts, Boards of Ordained Ministry, and Methodist University and seminary presidents decided to make statements, take out ads and send in articles to local papers and print media, as well as post inclusive signage on their properties. Delegates cast 384 votes for the more inclusive One Church Plan, promoted by a

majority of the U.S. delegation and bishops, yet the Traditional Plan passed with 438 votes. Under this legislation clergy who officiate a same sex marriage ceremony would be suspended without pay for one year. Methodists across the connection are bearing witness to the way they reach out in ministry to all persons. The executive committee of the UMC in Germany issued a letter stating that the Traditional Plan is “not acceptable for our church.” In a document called “The Michigan Statement” these words appear, “We stand ready to chart a way forward for United Methodism. Now is the moment to unite in confessing the harm we have done…covenanting to faithfully keep our baptismal vow to follow Jesus and resist evil, injustice, and oppression in whatever forms they present themselves and boldly sharing the good news of God’s abundant grace.” Methodists sense the Holy Spirit moving in local communities. There is a movement underway to insist that All means All and that the church can play an important role at the local level to challenge this decision. Conservative voices thought that gaining members from conservative nations in the continent of Africa and Russia that are hostile to alternative lifestyle inclusion would make it easy to take the UMC in a more conservative direction. What they are finding though is a very vocal resistance to their efforts. God isn’t finished with this yet and neither is the UMC.

SONG AND DANCE

An Interview with Megan Mullally and Stephanie Hunt of Nancy And Beth

By Gregg Shapiro

I

f you only know Megan Mullally from her acclaimed, scene-stealing role as Karen Walker on Will & Grace, then you don’t know the half of it. In addition to being a comedic actress with flawless timing, she is a chanteuse with the ability to belt listeners into next week. Mullally, who won raves for her performance in the Broadway revival of How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying, as well as debuting the role of Elizabeth in the Young Frankenstein musical, also has a more experimental harmonious side as she demonstrates with co-lead vocalist Stephanie Hunt in their band Nancy And Beth. With an eponymous debut album already under its belt and a sophomore full-length scheduled for release in 2020, Nancy And Beth are taking to the road for a US concert tour before jetting off to Australia in June. I had the pleasure of speaking to Megan and Stephanie about the band, the music and more. Gregg Shapiro: For the uninitiated, I’d like to begin by asking you both to say a few words about the genesis of the band name Nancy, capital A And, Beth – Nancy And Beth. Megan Mullally: Oh, my God! People can’t get over their emotional distress over the capitalized A. Stephanie Hunt: [laughs]

MM

They can’t calm themselves [laughs]. Let me explain the capitalized A. First of all, it’s because we like it. Second of all, we’re Stephanie and Megan. But this is a band. We didn’t want people to think it was just two people who were just going to stand there. It’s a band! So, we capitalized it. But I’m telling you, the furor that that has caused. People have refused, publications have refused to print that capital

A, and I’m like, “But you put a dollar sign in Ke$ha! Why can’t you use a capital A?” I don’t get it.

GS

On my (gay) honor, I will make sure to inform my editor that the A is capitalized.

MM GS SH

You are a dreamboat.

Thank you! So, where did the name actually come from?

I would say it came from the ethers and solidified a telepathic communication that Megan and I have together. All of this was done over email. It was in a long list of names that we were considering. We had a dinner and we talked over a long list of names, then Megan sent me a bunch of those in an email,

and she included Nancy And Beth somewhere in the middle. As soon as I saw Nancy And Beth, I emailed back, “Nancy And Beth, that’s the best one!” She had thought that Nancy And Beth was the best one, too. We both immediately understood the comedic undertones and existential hankerings and it works perfectly.

SH

GS

GS MM

Among the “dollfaces," as the band is referred to in the liner notes, is Joe Berardi, who played with you, Megan, in the Supreme Music Program. Is Nancy And Beth in any way an outgrowth of SMP?

MM

Only in the sense that I wanted to have a musical concern going again. But it really is because of Stephanie. I don’t think I would have set out to start a band again, because Supreme Music Program never really broke up. We could have continued playing. But then I met Stephanie and it turned into this whole other thing.

SH MM GS

[Laughs] To put it mildly.

As the anniversary of the release of the eponymous Nancy And Beth debut album approaches, what has the experience been like for each of you?

MM

The first record came out great. The second record, which comes out in 2020 is so good! We’re so excited about it.

SH MM

There’s a horn section in it.

We got Quincy Jones’ horn arranger to do some arrangements for about four or five of the tracks. All of the tracks sound totally different from each other. We do so many different genres and eras. This will be our third year in a row of touring. I look forward to it so much. This year we get to go to Australia and all around the States. It’s going to be cool.

Every year it changes. Our show evolves as we both evolve as human beings. We let that effect whatever the show is. We don’t even know what it’s going to be [laughs], which is one of my favorite parts about this band. It’s a very stream-ofconsciousness experience on stage. Of all the songs in Rufus Wainwright’s canon, why was “Vibrate” selected?

That was one that I knew of. I have a couple of his records and I’ve always liked that song. The way we choreographed it is kind of witty. I come up with the steps and then Stephanie remembers them. That’s how it works [laughs].

SH

I also knew about that one before. But it also hinted that it could use some movement in it, with the “Vibrate” lyrics, even though we mostly stand still. We do subtle, cool choreography. On our new record, and in the set we do now, the LGBTQ community will be pleased to know that we have a Doris Day song that goes over like gangbusters.

GS

Megan's character Karen sang "The Man That Got Away" on a recent episode of Will & Grace. Is there any chance that we might ever hear a Nancy And Beth song incorporated into an episode of the show?

MM

I wish [laughs]. I feel like the chances are relatively slim, but that would be amazing. But wait, you gave me an idea. Stephanie and I could do “The Man That Got Away” in harmony. One genre of music that we’ve never done is a torch song. Instinctively we don’t do victim songs. I asked Stephanie a few months ago, “Do you realize that we’ve never done a “my man done me wrong” song? We don’t pick those. Unfortunately, because it’s probably the all-time greatest torch song, “The Man That Got Away” is a victim song. We want to do a little of everything, so we could do it.

A CALL FOR LGBT HEROES APRIL 4-7, 2019 By Christian De La Huerta Photo Courtesy of Soulful Power

W

hat does it mean to be a hero, to live heroically, in these times, when we don’t have a horse hitched outside, armor to wear, and demons to slay, except the ones within? We associate heroism with those of great courage who accomplish extraordinary feats or selflessly place themselves at personal risk for the sake of another, a larger community or a cause. What if we expanded the way we think of heroism to include everyday struggles and challenges that lead to our own personal growth and spiritual transformation, in service to something greater than ourselves? Perhaps in so doing we do not place ourselves at risk of physical survival in the way a warrior hero does, but being willing to look within, face ourselves and do the necessary work of selfhealing is no less heroic. Freeing ourselves from our conditioning, healing our wounds and transcending our past traumas is an act of tremendous courage and selflessness that is truly the stuff of heroes. Perhaps the “s word” trips you a bit. It’s no wonder, because many of us confuse spirituality with religion, and given the way we have been treated and continue to be treated by many religions in the world. But, as I put forth in my book, Coming Out Spiritually, that many LGBTQ people reject spirituality is tragic and unnecessary. In fact, people we today call lesbian, gay, bi, trans, or queer have a long

tradition of fulfilling spiritual roles such as teachers, healers, scouts of consciousness, mediators, and keepers of beauty throughout history and all over the world. Part of my work over the last 30 years has been to help our community reclaim and redefine that spiritual heritage. As far as I am concerned, trying to reject our spirituality is as ludicrous as attempting to do the same with our sexuality, something many of us tried to do as we struggled with self-acceptance and internalized homophobia. They are both intrinsic parts of being human. But what does it mean to come out spiritually? Have you known or even suspected that you had a role to play as teacher, healer, or spiritual activist? How are you giving expression to those roles in your life? Are you ready to step things up a bit? It’s time. Come spend a weekend with an intimate group of like-minded committed seekers. Identify, and release, whatever obstacles may have been holding you back from stepping fully into your power and purpose. Let’s explore what we may do together that we may not be able to do separate and alone. We will enjoy inspiring dialogue, soul-nourishing camaraderie, deep healing, rituals, four life-changing breathwork sessions, and exquisite meals as we break through beyond past limitations to unleash our true potential. And, we will have fun!

MAGIC TO DO

AN INTERVIEW WITH GAY ILLUSIONIST AND ACTOR MICHAEL CARBONARO

By Gregg Shapiro

F

orget Harry Potter! If you aren’t under the spell of gay illusionist Michael Carbonaro then you don’t know what you’re missing. Carbonaro, the star of the mind-bending magic, hidden camera TruTV series The Carbonaro Effect, which is currently in its fourth season, with a fifth in the works, is a witty trickster. He’s the kind of presto change-o illusionist who gains your confidence before completely rocking your world, all done with nothing up his sleeve (or so we’ve been led to believe). First crossing many gay folks’ radar in 2006 as adorable Andy in Todd Stephens’ Another Gay Movie, Carbonaro has parlayed his first love – magic – into a successful industry and one bearing his name. I spoke with Carbonaro in March 2019 while he was in the midst of his tour. Michael Carbonaro performs on April 10, 2019 in Fort Lauderdale at Parker Playhouse. Gregg Shapiro: You are the star of the TruTV series The Carbonaro Effect, which began its fourth season in May 2018. What has the positive response to the show meant to you as a performer? Michael Carbonaro: I’m really delighted that people have found both the television show and the live show a source of entertainment to which they can bring their entire family. In a way that it’s not like a kiddie show, by any means, like going to the circus or, “Oh, let’s bring the kids.” It really is for everyone on the complete age spectrum. I love that. I love that there’s an entertainment like that. I’ve always admired humorous performers like that, back to the days of Johnny Carson. Someone to whom everybody can relate and you’re able to hit on different levels and different people can find humor and laughs in different places. I’m so excited to have that and I really believe that it came from the fact that I spent most of my life performing at events such as parties where there were kids and adults, as a professional magician on Long Island. I performed my magic

show at birthday parties, communions, christenings, Bar Mitzvahs. I trained myself to have a personality to cater to that audience of completely different age groups.

GS

Humor, which you mentioned, is such a big part of the TV and live shows. How important is it for humor to be a part of The Carbonaro Effect.

MC

I think it weaves in really well in the same way that some of the greatest horror movies go back and forth with humor and moments of being scared. With magic, it weaves a spell, seduces you into a state of surrender. You’re laughing and then, “Wait a minute! How did that happen?” And then you’re laughing again. That’s a really cool formula to make magic transcend to an audience. On another level, magic for me was kind of the tool that I used through which to filter my personality. I love humor and it’s a way that my personality can come through. I think that magic helped me get that out there.

GS MC

Is there a fifth season of The Carbonaro Effect in the works?

Yes. We’re jumping into writing sessions right after this tour wraps up. We’re going to be shooting the fifth season in Chicago again. We also have plans for a 100th episode in front of a live audience. That’s going to be a total blast. That’ll be new. Usually, I end up hosting the show – just me to the camera. A regular episode of The Carbonaro Effect is out in the real world with a hidden camera set up. This is going to be fun. We’re inviting a live crowd to come in and watch. We’re going to show clips on a screen and celebrate the hundredth episode. That blows my mind. Honestly, [laughs] when I was signing a deal to do a hidden camera magic TV show, in my mind, I was thinking to myself, “If I really put my head to it, I bet I can come up with 10 really great episodes. We are at 100 and I’m so proud of all of them. It’s accomplished with OutClique.com | 105

an amazing team of people. The same with my live show. We’ve got a great crew behind the scenes that makes me look flawless out there. I’m really excited about it all.

GS

As a former Chicago resident, I recognized several Chicago locations from the seasons of The Carbonaro Effect. Can you please say something about why that city was chosen?

MC

We love a place that has a great variety of different locations that can include suburban to metropolis. Chicago is awesome. It’s a fast-paced place. The people are attentive. Bluntly, another reason we chose it is because there are only a few states that actually allow the kind of work we do to happen. The kind of hidden camera shows to take place. Some states, you must ask somebody to sign a release first before you film them.

GS

Watching you on TV is one thing, but seeing you live is something else. When my husband and I attended your show in South Florida a couple of years ago, he was called onstage as a volunteer for one of your illusions. Have you ever had an overzealous volunteer onstage with you and how did you handle it?

MC

Yes, I’ve had an overzealous volunteer. It can be difficult because you might get someone up there who’s trying to over-perform and they want to be the show, which can take away from the show a little bit. It’s a balance. I take my chances. There’s nothing like not knowing how someone is going to behave. The same thing with the TV show. That’s part of the fun of it. You have to surf along with whatever moment is going to happen. I love that energy.

GS MC

How is it that goldfish and other types of fish have become part of the act?

We’ve done thousands of trick on the TV show at this point and fish just keep popping up. I scratch my head about it, too. They’re fun to work with and they always get a great reaction from the crowds. They’re

fun to use in the live show. I can make a fish appear and then we can send somebody home with it. We sell off a fish bowl that I sign at each show and that goes to a cool cause that we support known as Hocus Focus. It’s a group that uses magic and magicians to help kids with learning differences. We raise money for them across the whole tour. At each tour date, I sign a fish bowl and we raise money for that group.

GS MC GS

Have you ever been upstaged by one of the goldfish in your act? [Laughs] no, I don’t think I’ve ever been upstaged by one.

In what ways would you say that being gay influences your life as an illusionist, if at all?

MC

I’m not sure that being gay influences my magic. I think as an artist – and artists are always thinking outside of the box – I was lucky because growing up in a heterocentric world and being told that, “You’re going to meet a girl and get married and have kids,” knowing at an early age that I didn’t think that that was going to be the path I’m taking, was an early indication that the world doesn’t work the way people say it does all the time. I think that echoes through in magic. You’re showing people a moment where they go, “Wait a minute! I thought the laws of physics worked differently!” And you’re like, “The world isn’t exactly what you thought, is it?” There’s an openness there and an ability to think outside of what we think we know that is the same in sexuality and magic.

GS

Very well said! Does your husband Peter Stickles still go out on tour with you and will he be with you when you are at Parker Playhouse here in Fort Lauderdale?

MC

Peter comes out on stage to help out. He’s driving the van right now as we tour from city to city. But he won’t be with me in Fort Lauderdale.

THE “T” STANDS FOR TRANS AND THEATRE

T

heatre has long been hailed as one of the safest places for self expression and exploration. I’m lucky enough to share that experience. The arts are where I feel safe and where I can make others feel the same. Hi! My name is Daimien J. Matherson and I am a theatre owner in South Florida. Oh, and I’m transgender. Since childhood, I knew there was something that wasn’t quite right. I attended Catholic schools, uniforms included, where I was in a sea of everyone who looked, thought, and believed the same. Except me. I always thought maybe my clothes just never fit properly. I was uncomfortable and hated the mirror. I recognized my eyes but everything else was foreign. High School introduced bullying, both physically and verbally. My light in the dark was my discovery of the arts when I joined the school’s choir and I found my strength. Junior year, I came out as a lesbian, becoming the school’s first openly LGBTQ+ individual. I joined a GLCC where I learned about the term, “transgender.” Something I wouldn’t, for a long while still, let myself identify with. Flash forward to 2012, a series of abusive relationships and an intimate encounter with suicide goes by and I can finally enroll in college. Music develops into a love of theatre and I dive in soul first. Theatre became my

ultimate safe space. I worked myself through school with clients in recovery where I first implemented theatre as a form of healing. While running these activities, I found my own healing and acceptance, and in 2015 at the age of 25, I came out as a transgender man. Immediately, the theatre community became my first line of defense and support; solidifying my dream to start a theatre company. And in 2017 Measure for Measure Theatre was created with my partner, Kelly Johnson. I vow that, Measure for Measure will not only provide high quality theatre productions but also a nurturing and accepting environment to anyone who works with us. We are an evergrowing family and there's always room for more. Now in 2019, we at Measure for Measure Theatre are two shows in. We have received a Carbonell Nomination and won Silver Palm Award for out production of Next to Normal (Sabrina Lynn Gore/Best Actress). April brings promise as we make our Broward Center for the Performing Arts debut with a production of Murder Ballad. I believe our success is powered by those that support us. MARK MACKILLOP

NEW YORK TO FORT LAUDERDALE WITH BODY BY TACO BELL

By Steven O. Evans, PhD

M

ark MacKillop, star of Anastasia, West Side Story and Dirty Dancing is bringing Body By Taco Bell to Florida. This is the third in MacKillop's series of solo shows humorously pulling back the curtain on social media life. In the online era when anyone can claim to be anything (or anyone), Mark takes on the Instagram job of "Life Coach." If you've ever rolled your eyes at social media "influencers," you won't want to miss Mark's tongue-in-cheek dishing of life advice through song. Mark will be performing at The Grill, on April 29, 2019, at 8:00PM. Tickets can be purchased at www.BodyByTacoBell.com Steven O. Evans, PhD: Mark, we are excited to have you come to Fort Lauderdale! Tell us about your show! Mark MacKillop: Well, this whole thing started because I have such a love and a dislike for social media. I love that I can keep up with what my friends are doing in their lives. Now look, don’t get me wrong, I’m all about a fakeit-till-you-make-it situation, but the things people claim they are in their social media bios is some next level witchcraft and tomfoolery. So that’s kind of where the inspiration for this show came from. I kept seeing people posting thirst trap pics, but with motivational quotes and life advice. I would look and saw that they called themselves a life coach. So I wrote a show about it. In the show I give out terrible life advice and sing songs. So essentially it's a fun tongue-in-cheek self-deprecating read of “influencers.”

SOE

What’s the scoop on your Instragam and how you work it into your show?

MM

What I’ve tried to do with my shows about social media, is kind of pull back the curtain on the facade we have all built up around us. People are so obsessed with likes and followers that I wanted to shine a spotlight on these things and laugh at them because we’ve gotten so ridiculous.

SOE MM

Is there one song in particular that’s always in your shows?

SOE MM

What’s your favorite part of performing?

SOE MM

What’s it like to be in Anastasia and travel?

With this particular show I have my set list of songs, but I have wiggle room to adjust the show wherever I’m performing it to change things up to accommodate my special guests in that particular city. So the advice I’ll be giving to local diva, Jennifer McCLain, while I’m performing in Fort Lauderdale will be a different song or duet I’d sing with someone else in a different city.

I’m just so drawn to it. I love singing and acting and transforming into other people. Ever since I was a little kid you could put me on stage and I’d perform. I think it’s the middle child syndrome. We all feel the need to be seen and if you don’t listen I’ll just put on a show and make sure you do.

Honestly it’s a pretty crazy experience. There is such a fandom for this musical. They call themselves Fanastasias. As a performer in a show you couldn’t ask for more supportive fans. They love this show and the people in it. I grew up watching this cartoon as a kid so it’s a cool thing to be a part of the first national tour.

Catch Mark live, in person, April 29, 2019, at The Grill! www.BodyByTacoBell.com 116 | OutClique.com

EASTER CANDY

By Rev. Patrick Rogers, MDiv.

O

ver ten years ago, I graduated from seminary with a Masters in Divinity degree. The other preparation for pastoral ministry included years of educational units with hospice and voluntarily serving churches before being officially called to serve as a full time pastor. The long wait was over and I felt ready and was extremely excited about this call which had taken so many years of preparation. I began this new position as the church was about to enter the Lenten/Easter season and my enthusiasm was bubbling over to ensure this was the best Easter worship experience ever on record. I love God for steering me towards this personal life changing call to serve and my gratefulness included this plan to give back!

Easter Sunday arrived and it indeed was a worship experience like no other. The church leadership and I had worked diligently for weeks. On Easter Sunday, the church and her pews were filled to capacity. The celebratory music was perfect for the occasion as we celebrated the “Risen Christ” through music, song, prayer, and word. We journeyed through the path where God had given the greatest gift ever given. I stood at the front door of the church and shook hands and gave hugs to each and every person who had given time from their Sunday mornings to attend. I was still wearing church vestments and the long flowing white robe with gold accents which were appropriate for this grand Easter celebration. As I shook the hands of the last attendees, I hurried as the children were having an Easter egg hunt on the church grounds. I love Easter candy so even hoped to find a few personal treats for later in the day as I would sit back and reflect upon the morning service. Yes indeed, the children were busy running all around carrying their Easter baskets and searching for their treasures. There was so much joy in my heart until I walked up to one

little girl whose Easter basket seemed as tall as she was. She literally was almost dragging the basket behind her. I looked into it and there were only three Easter eggs and the event was almost over. I felt the need to comfort her and said, “Oh you did okay, look at me, I don’t have even ONE Easter egg!” She stopped what she was doing and looked also in the basket and then thought about my statement as she paused. Next, without hesitation she reached in, took one of her three Easter eggs, and handed one to me. Regarding her “lack” or what she would or would not have later, she gave fully from her heart. She also gave without condition. It was then that I felt in my heart for the first time the true meaning of Easter. Especially in the present time of controversy, church division and schisms in mainstream denominations about who is included in the kingdom and who is not, it is a reminder for us to get back to the heart of Easter and how to truly love and give. I thank her to this day for the best gift she could have given this “still wet behind the ears” pastor. Love without condition and with all your heart.

RAY OF LIGHT

AN INTERVIEW WITH AMY RAY OF INDIGO GIRLS

By Gregg Shapiro

N

ever one to sit idle, Amy Ray has released a new solo record in September 2018, her sixth. Holler (Compass/ Daemon) continues in a similar countrified vain as 2014’s Goodnight Tender. Featuring guest musicians including recent Grammy-winner Brandi Carlile, Vince Gill, Lucy Wainwright Roche, Justin Vernon (aka Bon Iver) and Rutha Mae Harris (of The Freedom Singers), Holler is another powerful musical statement from Ray. Indigo Girls performs May 4, 2019, at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts.

we tour, and get more and more in the groove with them, we’ve been working in old songs from the rock and punkier stuff. It’s adaptable to that. When I was writing Stag and Prom, I was playing a lot with the Butchies and I was writing to their style. My collaborators typically have a lot of influence over what I’m writing. They’re who I’m creating with, touring with, playing with from day to day. I like a lot of different kinds of music. I don’t prefer this to that, it’s where I’m at. This record has a little more of the earlier, punky, eclectic style mixed in with traditional country. I think I was crossing over into that line in my writing a little bit.

Gregg Shapiro: Why was now the right time for a new live album such as Live with the University of Colorado Symphony Orchestra?

GS

Amy Ray: Mostly because we’ve been touring with symphonies for about four or five years now. We felt like we’d gotten to a place where we knew the material well enough and wanted to document it. When we came upon a symphony that fit all the parameters that we needed to make a live record with a symphony; that was the University of Colorado Symphony. So, it worked out. It was kind of a long process. We had been hoping to get it done for a couple of years.

AR

GS

Your new solo album Holler continues the country-oriented style of your 2014 solo album Goodnight Tender. Is this a direction you see yourself going in for the near future?

AR

I don’t know. This was just what I was writing. I have a band that I’ve been touring with for four or five years. This is really a strong suit for them and for us together. As

124 | OutClique.com

Because Holler is so steeped in that tradition, what do you think that says about country music and its listeners? I think country music is opening up. Sarah Shook and Heather (H.C. McEntire), I’m a big fan of both of them. Both of those artists have found that they have a place in Americana, which is the progressive side of “country.” It’s the place where people who play country, but don’t fit into a more conservative demographic feel comfortable. Pop country musicians like Sugarland and Dixie Chicks and others probably also feel like they don’t want to be restricted by being expected to have a certain political perspective. I don’t think music categories need to be restricted by political perspectives in any way on any side. It’s great to me that all these artists are getting some play and that they have some place where they can sit comfortably and be honored in a way that makes sense to everybody.

CRUEL INTENTIONS’ JOHN BATTAGLIESE By Denny Patterson

C

ruel Intentions: The ‘90s Musical Experience will be making an appearance at the Coral Springs Center for the Arts on Sunday, May 19, 2019 for a one night only engagement. Based on the French novel, Les Liaisons Dangereuses, and the classic cult film starring Reese Witherspoon, Ryan Phillippe, and Sarah Michelle Gellar, Cruel Intentions pulls viewers into the manipulative world of step-siblings Sebastian and Kathryn. Soulless and vindictive, these two spoiled rich kids have an insatiable appetite for sex and ruining people’s lives. Place a bet on whether or not Sebastian can deflower their incoming headmaster’s daughter, Annette Hargrove, the two set out to destroy the innocent girl and anyone who gets in their way. I had the pleasure of chatting with John Battagliese who plays Greg McConnell. A Philadelphia native, he is excited to hit the road for his first national tour. Some of his other theatre credits include Link Larkin in Hairspray, St. Jimmy in American Idiot, and Romeo in BAZ: Star Crossed Love, a musical version of Baz Luhrmann’s films with music from Moulin Rouge, Romeo and Juliet, and The Great Gatsby. This show had a residency at the Palazzo Theatre in Las Vegas. Thank you so much for taking the time to chat with me, John. Let me start off by asking, where did your passion for acting come from? One of my earliest memories was seeing a production of Grease in Philadelphia starring Frankie Avalon as the Teen Angel. Aside from being a national celebrity, he was a bit of a hometown hero. He walked on stage and immediately received entrance applause and a standing ovation. I turned to my parents and said, “I want to do that!” Do you remember the moment when you decided you were going to pursue this as a career? I truthfully do not remember a time that I made the decision. I was telling people that I wanted to be an actor from as early as fifth grade.

126 | OutClique.com

You are playing closeted jock Greg McConnell. How would you say you relate to your character? Well, unlike Greg, I am definitely no superstar on the field, but I absolutely understand the pressure that comes with living that sort of double life. High school and the years surrounding it are difficult for everyone. Add on the fact that you have this huge secret weighing you down, it can become daunting. I think everyone can relate to a character like Greg because whether you are grappling with coming out, like I was, or you have some other secret within you that no one knows yet, there is this huge fear of the unknown that comes with revealing and ultimately becoming your true self. What are you looking forward to the most about performing in Cruel Intentions? I am really excited about the cast we have, they are so talented and hilarious. I am obsessed with the music – we get to sing all the songs I would belt out in the car growing up. Only now they are for an actual audience and not just my mom! What can audiences expect from this show? Audiences who are familiar with the film will definitely get their fill of all their favorite movie moments, but I think new and old Cruel fans will leave shocked at the emotional chord the show may strike. There is a sort of magic that the musical numbers spark once integrated into this iconic script. What do you personally hope to take away from this experience? I really hope to become better at packing! I am obsessed with clothes and living out of a suitcase will be quite a challenge for me. Stay tuned to see how many pairs of shoes I buy on the road!
