Holiday Door Decor Goes Fab

Green wreaths with red holly berries draped around for a splash of color is fine.. if you’re living in the midwest in the 1980s. But this is Wilton Manors in 2024 and fab Christmas decorations are mandatory.

Pub On the Drive is holding its eleventh annual Charity Wreath Auction on Thursday, Dec. 12, 2024 at 7 pm. Let the Christmas creativity begin! Some wreaths may light up, others may have animated Santa or Frosty figurines. The possibilities are endless.

People can start dropping off their wreaths the Sunday before. Pub patrons will be able to begin staking out their favorites as the decor starts pouring in. Proceeds will go to Kids In Distress, a Wilton Manors-based agency that helps children in our area. “We love working with Kids In Distress. They are a wonderful organization,” Pub owner Alexander Sadeghi told OutClique

As in years past, the one and only Electra will host the night and serve as auctioneer. Be prepared and bring your wallet, because she knows how to drive up bids. Electra also knows how to throw a little shade, so make sure your wreath is flawless and your bid is worthy of her effort.

Sometimes, the wreaths make their way back year after year. People will purchase a fab wreath and return it the next year so it can raise more money and decorate a new place.

Empowering Wellness and Inclusivity Dani Forteza Leads HIV Prevention and Holistic Health Initiatives at The Pride Center

At The Pride Center at Equality Park, the commitment to fostering health, wellness, and empowerment within the LGBTQ+ community is a driving force. As the Wellness and Testing Coordinator, Dani Forteza leads a dedicated team to provide essential HIV testing, education, and preventive care across Broward County. Through a network of diverse locations, including community spaces and partner sites, they aim to bring accessible, inclusive care directly to those who need it. I was able to catch up with Dani recently to learn more about his role and the impact of The Pride Center on the local community.

OCQ: Hi Dani! Thanks for sharing some of your time with me. First of all, what is your current position and overall responsibilities at The Pride Center?

Dani Forteza: I am the Wellness and Testing Coordinator at The Pride Center at Equality Park. While The Pride Center offers many diverse programs, I am proud to be part of the Wellness Program, which provides a wide range of services using a holistic, status-neutral approach to health and wellness. My primary responsibility is overseeing our HIV testing services, which includes managing our team of eight Wellness Specialists and our in-person testing service at 12 different locations across Broward County. These locations range from our campus at The Pride Center to non-clinical community settings like two private clubs for men, four Walgreens stores, and five behavioral health and recovery treatment centers.

At each site, we don’t just offer HIV testing; we also provide comprehensive HIV education. During these sessions, we empower clients, particularly those in vulnerable populations, by educating them about HIV and AIDS, modes of transmission, testing options, prevention methods, treatment, Florida laws on HIV/STD status disclosure, and dispelling common myths.

In addition to HIV testing and education, I help coordinate wellness initiatives such as town halls, workshops, and health fairs. Part of my role involves fostering partnerships with community organizations to broaden access to care, ensuring that our services reach as many people as possible. I collaborate closely with our outreach and community engagement team to provide essential health services like sexual health education, preventive care such as PrEP, and linking clients to HIV-positive medical care and pharmaceutical services.

OCQ: You’re a busy guy! How long have you been with The Pride Center?

Dani Forteza: I’ve been with The Pride Center since February 2022. Over the past couple of years, I’ve had the privilege of being part of many impactful initiatives and working with an incredible team dedicated to community health and well-being. Before that, I was also a client, having joined in 2019 when I moved to Fort Lauderdale.

OCQ: What inspired you to join The Pride Center team?

Dani Forteza: I’ve always been deeply passionate about public health and social justice, and The Pride Center’s mission to serve the LGBTQ+ community, particularly in health and wellness, resonated with me. The chance to directly impact lives by increasing access to crucial services like HIV testing and prevention felt like a perfect match for

my background and values. The Center’s commitment to inclusion, advocacy, and community support aligns with my personal beliefs.

However, my main inspiration comes from my own journey with HIV. After going through a difficult experience with my diagnosis, I wanted to ensure that no one else faces the same fear, shame, or uncertainty I did. I aim to be a source of support for people newly diagnosed, guiding them through emotional challenges and connecting them to resources that will help them live healthier, happier lives without stigma.

At The Pride Center, we have a program called PROMISE, where community members share empowering stories to inspire positive change. My own story drives me to continue this work every day, ensuring that others have the support and care they need.

OCQ: That sense of community and acceptance is so important - thank you for acknowledging the need and bringing positive change to the people right here in Wilton Manors who need it most. Speaking of community, what do you see as the biggest need in our community currently?

Dani Forteza: Right now, the biggest need is reducing health disparities, particularly in access to mental health care and preventive services like HIV testing, PrEP, and treatment. Stigma remains a huge barrier, and we need to speak up and not let others define us. Additionally, a lack

of resources and systemic barriers prevent many people from accessing the care they need. Addressing these gaps and creating inclusive, accessible spaces is crucial to improving our community's overall health.

OCQ: The Pride Center offers so many programs and services. What is one thing about The Pride Center that most people might not know?

Dani Forteza: Many might not realize the extent of our HIV testing and prevention services. In addition to on-site testing, we bring HIV testing to 11 other locations in our county, bringing these essential services directly to the community. We also provide HIV self-testing kits for use at home, offering a private, convenient option for those uncomfortable with coming into a physical setting.

Our programming is also diverse and innovative. Lifeenhancing programs, events, and groups at The Pride Center focus on holistic wellness, advocacy, Active Aging, Women with Pride, transgender services, the arts, recovery, community outreach, HIV prevention, spirituality, athletics, skills-building, and more.

OCQ: I hear you just received a very special award. Can you tell us about that?

Dani Forteza: I’m excited to share that on October 22, 2024, I was honored with The Louis Curbelo Leadership Award, which is given to leaders committed to raising HIV/AIDS awareness within Broward County’s Latino community. This award holds deep significance for me, as it represents our progress in breaking HIV stigma and the need for continued education, compassion, and support.

Louis Curbelo, who was HIV-positive, used music to inspire, educate, and spread hope. I strive to follow his footsteps by using my experiences to help others. Receiving this award is a reminder of the importance of our work, motivating me to ensure no one in our community feels isolated in their journey with HIV.

OCQ: It’s been a pleasure getting to know you, Dani! Anything else you’d like to share before we wrap up?

Dani Forteza: I just want to express my gratitude to everyone who supports The Pride Center and our mission. Whether through volunteering, donating, or simply spreading the word about our services, every bit helps us continue providing essential resources. We’re here to support, empower, and uplift, and we’re excited to see what the future holds for The Pride Center.

Bisexual Men: Faithful Lovers or Serial Cheaters?

This issue is one that’s really close to my heart because I am bisexual. I’ve worked with many bi men who feel misunderstood, especially within the gay community. I’ve been there—facing criticism, discrimination, and even hate from both the heterosexual and gay communities. It can be confusing and lonely, but that’s why I’m here to clear up some common misconceptions about bisexuality.

Since I have dated both men and women, I have heard it all! Gay men have told me, “You’re not bi, you’re just too scared to come out as gay,” and straight women have said, “You’ll probably just cheat on me with a man.” I often speak to bisexual men who feel like they don’t belong in any community. It breaks my heart because I have felt the same many times before. Here’s the truth: bisexual men can be incredible partners—if you give us a chance!

So, let’s start with the basics: What is bisexuality? In simple terms, it’s an attraction to more than one gender. For this article, we’ll focus on attraction to men and women, but remember, bisexuality is part of a broader spectrum that includes pansexual, omnisexual, and other bi+ identities.

Let’s debunk some myths:

1. Bisexuality equals promiscuity: Nope, being bi doesn’t mean we’re more likely to cheat. Like anyone else, we value trust and commitment in our relationships.

2. Bisexuality is a phase: Wrong again. Bisexuality is a legitimate sexual orientation, not a stopover on the way to being gay or straight.

3. Bisexuality means equal attraction to both genders: Not necessarily. Attraction can be fluid and varies from person to person.

If you’re dating a bisexual man or considering it, here are some tips:

● Understand bisexuality: Educate yourself and acknowledge the fluidity of sexual orientation.

● Communicate openly: Discuss your relationship expectations honestly and respectfully.

● Build trust: Don’t let stereotypes cloud your judgment—trust is key.

● Support and celebrate: Embrace the uniqueness of your relationship and show your love proudly.

Staying Clean & Sober During the Holidays Tips for a Joyful, Substance-Free Season

The holiday season can be especially challenging for those striving to maintain sobriety or contemplating the journey of recovery. Holiday gatherings often involve social events centered around alcohol or other substances, which can make it difficult for those in recovery to feel comfortable or stay on track. However, with a few mindful strategies and support systems, it is entirely possible to navigate the season with peace and confidence.

Setting Clear Boundaries

One of the most empowering steps you can take is to set clear boundaries for yourself. This means acknowledging which events support your goals and which may pose risks. If you’re invited to a party where alcohol will be the focus, consider whether it’s best for you to attend or if you should politely decline. Remember, your recovery comes first, and it’s okay to prioritize your well-being. True friends and family will understand and support your choices.

Speaking with a Recovery Coach

Connecting with a recovery coach during the holiday season can be a game-changer. Coaches are trained to offer guidance, encouragement, and accountability. They can help you set specific goals for the season, such as attending only certain events or staying sober through potentially triggering situations. A coach can also help you develop a plan for managing holiday stress, loneliness, or anxiety—emotions that often amplify around this time of year.

Relying on Friends in Recovery

One of the most rewarding aspects of the recovery journey is building connections with others who understand the challenges. The holiday season is a wonderful time to lean on these friends for support and companionship.

Spending time with others in recovery can help you feel connected and safe, as they’ll likely be facing similar feelings and challenges.

Additionally, many 12-step programs and recovery groups offer holiday-specific meetings, providing a safe space to share and listen to others’ experiences. Virtual meetings are also widely available as well.

Practicing Self-Care

During the holidays, it’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle and neglect your self-care routine. However, regular self-care practices, such as exercise, meditation, journaling, or spending time in nature, can help keep you grounded. These activities relieve stress, boost your mood, and reinforce your commitment to sobriety.

Planning for Triggers

Anticipating triggers and preparing responses can be incredibly helpful. If you know certain people, places, or topics are likely to make you uncomfortable, plan for how you’ll handle these situations. Having a friend or recovery coach on speed dial for a quick chat can make all the difference if you feel triggered or tempted.

Embracing the Joy of a Sober Season

Finally, remember that a sober holiday season opens the door to experiencing genuine connections and emotions. By staying present and prioritizing your well-being, you can discover the real joys of the season—joys that aren’t dependent on substances. With the right support, boundaries, and self-care, you can navigate the holidays confidently, making new memories to celebrate in a healthy, fulfilling way.

TIME TO CELEBRATE! at Genesis

Health Institute

Chatting with Dr. Cabrera about Genesis’ Dec 12th holiday party.

Baxter Martin: I am chatting today with Dr. Ferdinand Cabrera, Medical Director, at Genesis Health Institute about their upcoming holiday party on December 12th. Dr. Cabrera, the upcoming holiday party sounds truly special. Can you tell us what inspired this celebration?

Dr. Cabrera: Absolutely! At Genesis, we’ve always believed in fostering a sense of community and gratitude. This holiday season, we wanted to create an evening that embodies giving back, appreciation, and the spirit of togetherness. It’s our way of saying thank you to our clients and friends while supporting meaningful causes.

Baxter Martin: It’s wonderful to hear. What can guests expect during the event?

Dr. Cabrera: Guests will enjoy an elegant evening filled with music, delicious hors d’oeuvres, and refreshing libations. We’ve arranged valet parking for added convenience and have planned raffles with exciting prizes. It’s not just a celebration; it’s a moment to connect, reflect, and spread cheer.

Baxter Martin: I see you have a special holiday offer. It seems intriguing. Can you share more about it?

Dr. Cabrera: Yes, we’re offering $500 gift certificates for just $400—essentially a 20% saving. The best part is that Genesis will donate 10% of all net sales from these certificates to Sun Serve and Abandoned Pet Rescue,

both remarkable organizations making a difference in our community. And, even if guests can’t attend, they can still take advantage of this offer by purchasing before December 12.

Baxter Martin: That’s fantastic. Any final words for those considering joining?

Dr. Cabrera: We’d love for everyone to come and experience the evening’s warmth and joy. Please don’t forget to RSVP using the QR Code below. Let’s celebrate together, share gratitude, and contribute to causes that matter.

Baxter Martin: I look forward to seeing you on December 12th

Dr. Cabrera: Likewise!

A Time of Giving

Lately, it seems that everyone is focused on what separates us: regions, identities, beliefs, cultures.

How can people dismiss or denigrate entire groups of people, based on their race, ethnicity, gender identity, age, or economic situation?

You may have felt the tension over the Thanksgiving table last month. You may even be skipping this month’s holiday gatherings, just to avoid those awkward conversations.

This same, awkward holiday season is also the time when many non-profits activate their fundraising efforts, hoping that everyone will help out, with generous gifts that can empower services in the coming year.

Be the change you want to see in the world.

Do you support the local non-profits in South Florida that make life safer, more supportive, and just plain better for our LGBT community? More specifically, do you support non-profits even if they primarily serve people who don’t socialize where you do, or may not even look like you?

One local non-profit agency that may not have been on your giving list is Latinos Salud. “But I’m not Latino,” you may say. Did you know that Latinos Salud serves the entire LGBT community? That’s right: while they focus their recruitment primarily on the underserved gay Latino community, they have always welcomed friends, partners, and allies to their four South Florida locations.

From one-stop PrEP enrollment, to same-day HIV testing appointments and walk-in services, to on-site

STD treatment, to engaging free community events, Latinos Salud serves 20,000 community members each year.

If that sounds like a non-profit that supports the community, why not step up and show your support of their efforts, during this time of giving? Best of all, when you donate to their Florida AIDS Walk team, your donation will be matched dollar-for-dollar! (Your tax receipt will come from the Walk’s hosts, AIDS Healthcare

Foundation. But all the benefits of your generosity will go directly to Latinos Salud.)

Scan this QR code, or go to their website www. LatinosSalud.org and click on the red Donate button. You can also visit any of their locations from 10 AM to 9 PM, and see the fine services they provide.

In a time of division, you will find that your gift of any size makes you feel connected.

He will be missed by everyone under the sun. Richard Gray has spent the last 30+ years preaching the gospel of inclusion and telling the world that Greater Fort Lauderdale is the pot of gold at the end of the LGBTQIA+ rainbow.

Now Visit Lauderdale’s Senior Vice President of Inclusion & Accessibility is retiring. Gray will be taking a three month break and will then start a Consulting Company specializing in Inclusion & Accessibility.

“I still have plenty of strategies that I want implemented. I want to continue to implement global change and influence global standards for serving disadvantaged and marginalized communities,” said Gray.

“It’s been a tough decision and I’ve been thinking about it for a few years. I feel the time is right,” he said during an exclusive interview.

Gray has spent his career with Visit Lauderdale, Broward County’s tourism arm, creating diversity programs and luring tourists, especially LGBTQIA+ tourists, to Fort Lauderdale.

In short: if someone has decided to visit Fort Lauderdale in the past 30 years, Gray likely had a role in bringing them here.

His first LGBTQIA+ campaign came in 1995 with a $35,000 budget. Even back then, that wasn’t a lot of money to do an intensive project. But Gray made it work despite being in the era of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell and the so-called Defense of Marriage Act. Saying ‘Gay’ still wasn’t easy.

“It was a question of not having the courage or the confidence to say the word ‘Gay.’ We had to start off with baby steps so we said ‘rainbow.’ We were one of the first destinations in the United States to even go close to launching a gay campaign,” he said.

The campaign was called Immerse Yourself, a reference to our miles of coastline and inland

waterways. But Gray based it on a gay icon of that time, Greg Louganis. The Olympic swimming champion trained at the aquatics center.

“The image we used was a man diving into this big, bubbly swimming pool. I loved it and immediately thought of Greg,” he said.

Eventually Gray told Louganis that he served as inspiration for the campaign that began highlighting the best Broward County has to offer.

The team realized they had become thought leaders and other cities started slowly dipping a toe into the LGBTQIA+ tourism arena.

“At the end of five years we found gold right at the end of the rainbow,” Gray said.

Thirty Years Later

Fast forward to today and Gray’s team is pushing more envelopes than a stationery store. In 2022 Visit Lauderdale launched the Everyone Under the Sun campaign. When they say “everyone,” they mean everyone. Yes, it is LGBTQIA+ inclusive, but there is so much more. It features Black and brown people, a disabled person, and more.

In fact, one-in-four Americans have a visible or invisible disability. Gray says they are welcome here. “We put Broward County in a great place, highlighting inclusion,” Gray said with a bit of an extra smile crossing his face. “We have always been a welcoming destination. I’m proud of that.”

Gray is also a champion of the most maligned member of the LGBTQIA+ acronym: our trans brothers and sisters. Broward County was the first destination in the world to do a marketing survey of what trans tourists would look for in a vacation. The subsequent campaign was titled Where Happy Meets Go Lucky

The biggest concern of trans travelers was safety. Gray reminds us that we live in a “bubble” of acceptance

and inclusion in Broward County. While we are in Florida, we’re not the Florida the state government in Tallahassee shows to the world.

Visit Florida, the state’s tourism website with no connection to Visit Lauderdale, recently removed the landing page for LGBTQIA+ businesses, saying the state’s website should conform to the state’s policies. Those policies include erasing and bullying LGBTQIA+. Book bans, healthcare restrictions on trans, attacking drag entertainment, and Don’t Say Gay are policies passed under Gov. Ron DeSantis.

Gray says that’s not happening here. “We’re firm believers that travel transcends politics. We are continuing to market to the LGBTQ+ community and allies. We’re continuing to

welcome everybody. For us it’s business as normal,” he said.

Visit Lauderdale’s work with the trans community was recognized by the United Nations. Indeed, Gray’s mantle is getting crowded with accolades. He won a Suncoast Regional Emmy® Awards (2018) for the Greater Together Video campaign.1

ITB Berlin gave him their LGBTQ+ Pioneer Award, Travelbility recognized him as an Access Hero, and he was named to Out100’s list of most influential leaders.

Out of the Box, Into the Parade

Gray says it’s his boss, Stacy Ritter, who challenges her team to always think outside the box. Gray excels at this

because he was never in a box to begin with. “We’re savvy, we’re edgy, we push the envelope,” said Gray.

One campaign used black and white images.

“Celebrate You was one of my favorite campaigns. It was very unusual because we used black and white images. I wanted to include trans, non-binary, plus-sized, lesbian, latino, white,” he said.

This year Visit Lauderdale has been working with the Provincetown Business Guild to cross-promote LGBTQIA+ business. It’s an obvious opportunity for synergy and more than one million people have been reached and it’s been a huge success on social media.

On New Year’s Day, Visit Lauderdale made its biggest

statement yet, entering a float in the Rose Parade. They commissioned an original song and got several minutes of sunny coverage from Southern California. “I said, ‘I love it, let’s do it,’” he said.

The float featured the beach’s iconic wave wall, the Guitar Hotel, and the Florida Panthers. The best of Broward’s people were on board, including a member of the Seminole Tribe and Broward’s teacher of the year.

All the work is paying off. In 2023, 3.375 million LGBTQIA+ visited Broward County and spent $1.3 billion. Their work is primarily funded through tourist taxes and the bottom line proves the effort is paying off.

Gray believes his worldly outlook is helped because he came to Florida with a different perspective. “I’m English.

Richard talking about Accessible tourism at the FLOCC in Coral Gables | Courtesy of Richard Gray

I think internationally. For 33 years I’ve been a piece of the pie. It makes me feel good that we’ve evolved that way,” he said.

He evolved because LGBTQIA+ tourists have evolved. “In the early days it was very easy,” said Gray. “You stuck up a rainbow flag, ran an ad and you got business. LGBTQ+ travelers are more savvy now.”

Now you don’t have to choose between being in the “gay” area or the beach. Just about all hospitality businesses in Broward welcomes the community.

Active Retirement

Gray’s official last day is January 3, 2025, and his first plan is to have no plan. “The plan is just to take it easy for a while, not having my email inbox full. Take better care of

myself, enjoy my family in Britain,” he said.

He’s traveled all over the world – almost. There is still one spot he wants to hit: Antarctica. The world’s largest desert is not easy to reach and getting there is a trip in itself.

Also, he’ll still pick up when Ritter and his Visit Lauderdale colleagues call. “I’ve got lots of ideas. I’m here still,” he said. “I believe we’re here to make a difference. Even in retirement I want to make a difference. Travel is in my blood.”

As for his legacy, he hopes that since he blazed the trail many others will follow. “I would like to be remembered as someone who pushed boundaries and created paths for others to follow,” he said. “It’s all about the rainbows.”

Pastiche Pays Tribute to Vizcaya’s Past

Take one American agricultural industrialist with a penchant for European art. Throw in an Italian Renaissance inspired mansion. Then add an openly homosexual interior designer. If you think this sounds like the recipe for an episode of HBO’s The Gilded Age, you’re not wrong. It is also, however, part of the rich history of Miami’s legendary Villa Vizcaya, today known officially as Vizcaya Museum and Gardens.

In 1910, James Deering, the youngest son of farm tool conglomerate Deering Harvester’s founder William Deering, set out to build his masterpiece, a seventy-room palatial stone Italianate mansion on one-hundred-eighty magnificently landscaped acres overlooking Biscayne Bay in south Miami. To complete his daunting task, he employed as his “artistic director,” the interior decorator and artist, Paul Chalfin, who was well known in society circles of the time for having exquisite taste. He was also known in the very same society circles for being an openly gay man, a fact that Deering, a progressive individual, had no problem with. In fact, Deering allowed Chalfin to live in a houseboat behind Vizcaya’s main house with his romantic companion at the time, Louis Koons. Together, Deering and Chalfin would sail to Europe, sending back important 15th through 19th century furniture, architectural elements and objet d’art to furnish a project so vast that it was possible to arrive by ship in its own backyard Venice inspired mooring. Sadly, Deering only got to enjoy his stunning estate for a brief nine years, from 1916 to 1925, passing away suddenly on an ocean liner headed back to the United States. Chalfin, however, remained involved with Vizcaya and oversaw repairs to the damage suffered from the Great Miami Hurricane of 1926.

Chalfin, who died in 1959 at the age of 84, would have turned 150 on November 2nd of this year. To celebrate and honor the designer’s contribution to the history and culture of South Florida, the Contemporary Arts Program (CAP) at Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, has commissioned Miami based artist Lauren Shapiro to create an exhibit titled Pastiche. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines pastiche as “a literary, artistic, musical, or architectural work that imitates the style of previous work.” This is exactly what Shapiro has set out to do. Vizcaya Museum curator, Helena Gomez, explained that in each of the rooms the artist selected for the exhibit; the Breakfast Room, the Reception Room, and the Enclosed Loggia, Shapiro drew from various elements and themes contained in each when developing her sculptures in bold Miami shades of pink, green and blue, thus playing off the concept of pastiche. Gomez further explained that while Shapiro’s work has traditionally focused on environmental issues, specifically through the lens of the South Florida land and seascape, her nature-based practice ties in nicely with Vizcaya, a building in which coral and other locally sourced materials were used in the design. “There was an organic synergy between artist and site.”

This exciting exhibit opened to the public on October 23rd and will remain on view through May 19, 2025. More information on Lauren Shapiro and her work can be found on the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens website, Vizcaya.org, along with admission times and tickets. Have Yourself a Queer Little Christmas!

If I had to pick the gayest of holidays, I would have to say Christmas tops the list. All the decorations, the dazzling lights, the flirtatious kisses under the mistletoe; not to mention the gay apparel we get to don!

And as a gay pastor myself, I can’t help but notice how queer the Christmas story from the Bible is, as well. We’ve got:

A woman who gets pregnant and doesn’t need a man A bright, shining angel who appears in the sky and starts conducting a choir Three men traveling together from afar, bringing fabulously impractical gifts to baby Jesus

But, honestly, the story of Christmas is a truly queer tale; a subversive story that challenges us to find the holy in the ordinary stuff of life. At Christmas, God takes on human flesh, which shows us that our bodies are good, beautiful things. At Christmas, a courageous young girl says, “Yes!” to her Creator and brings new life into the world. At Christmas, the poor and lowly shepherds are the first to witness the birth of their Savior.

Indeed, Christmas is the queerest of holidays; when all the norms and conventions of our world get turned on their heads. In this world of fear and hatred, we get to proclaim peace and love! In a time with plenty of Scrooges, we get to deck the halls and sing fa la la la la! And when others tell us the future is nothing but doom and gloom, we get to say, “There is hope, for God is with us!”

I hope you all have a fabulously queer holiday season! Let’s make the yuletide gay!

Sacred Memories

December is a month of magic, myth, miracles, and memories. Everywhere we turn in December we are reminded of the magic that seems to be in the air, or maybe it’s in us and this season is meant to remind us of that.

In the Christian calendar we have Advent, which begins the Christian year. Advent is a time of waiting and expectation. After Advent there is Christmastide, celebrating the birth of Jesus. Christmastide is 12 days long, starting December 25 and going through January 5. There are other feast days, too, such as those commemorating St. Nicholas, Our Lady of Guadalupe, and St. Stephen.

In Judaism there is Chanukah, which recalls a limited amount of oil lasting longer than it was thought possible. The oil kept lamps lit for eight days while a small band of warriors reclaimed the Temple in Jerusalem from occupying forces in the Second Century BCE. The reclaimed Temple was rededicated.

Buddhism has Bodhi Day celebrating the enlightenment of the Buddha. Hinduism celebrates Pancha Ganapati honoring Lord Ganesh. Neopagans celebrate Yule. Kwanzaa honors the cultural heritage and traditional values of people of African descent.

I hope one or more of these traditions will remind you that the power of love enfolds you and you deserve all that Love offers. Happy holidays!

Bishop Durrell is the Senior Minister of Sunshine Cathedral in Fort Lauderdale and is an Auxiliary Bishop for the Global Justice Institute. Sunshine Cathedral Christmas Eve services are at 7PM and 9PM on December 24.

Don’t Drop the Ball on New Year’s

Head to Bourbon St. Pub for the Annual Shoe Drop Featuring Randy Roberts

In Key West the last thing anyone needs to worry about is waiting for the other shoe to drop—because there’s truly just one. On New Year’s Eve, as the countdown to midnight begins, La te da’s Randy Roberts will take center shoe as the 8-foot-long red glittered heel drops from the balcony at Bourbon St. Pub.

The New Year’s Eve festivities kick off with Roberts’ full show at 8 pm in the Crystal Room at La te da, seating is limited so advance ticket purchase is recommended. Then a free show featuring live entertainment on Bourbon St. Pub’s Duval Street stage follows at 9 pm and the shoe drop at midnight.

Roberts, who calls himself the luckiest performer in the world, has become a Key West must-see, with his show running for 26 years at La te da. Roberts will be the third person to step into the shoe, following Sushi’s 25-year tenure and Christopher Peterson last year. OutClique had the chance to chat with Roberts as he prepares to fill one really big shoe.

Megan Fitzgerald: How did you find out that you were chosen for the shoe drop?

Randy Roberts: I was having dinner with friends in London, England on October 1, and I got a Facebook message from Patrick Gallineaux, who will co-emcee the shoe drop show with Bria Ansara., asking if I was interested. He also works with the Bourbon St. Pub owner Joe Schroeder.

Megan Fitzgerald: Wow!

Randy Roberts: Yeah, right before dessert. It made for a good dessert. I’m also really grateful to Christopher Rounds of La te da for letting us move my show earlier to accommodate the shoe drop.

Megan Fitzgerald: How has living in Key West influenced your work and artistic expression?

Randy Roberts: I think the diversity of people that come here. The acceptance in Key West. It has a very village towny feel to it, but it’s also very open. When I got here, in the eighties, and then when I came back in 1998 it was

not uncommon to go to dinner at someone's house, and on your right was the CEO of a Fortune 500 company. Across the table was a Pulitzer prize-winning author, and next to them was the bar-back from the restaurant down the street. Everybody was accepted. So, you were made to feel comfortable, to do what you do best and try things out as long as you were authentic with it. So, Key West allowed me to try and thrive and grow. I also got here at the right time with the right thing. My show was what they were looking for when I got here. And they've gone along on the ride with me. Saturday night at my show, I had a couple come to me and say, we've been together 25 years, and we saw your show 25 years ago—here.

Megan Fitzgerald: What words would you use to describe New Year's Eve in Key West?

Randy Roberts: Out of control at times, festive and raucous!

Megan Fitzgerald: How does the shoe drop reflect the vibe of Key West?

Randy Roberts: Well, everything looks better with a good shoe! And I think there's also a little bit of the Wizard of Oz, because it is a ruby slipper. It's a big red shoe. So, you’re over the rainbow when you’re in Key West.

Megan Fitzgerald: Why do you think events like the shoe drop are important for Key West?

Randy Roberts: These events bring everyone together. It doesn't matter—race, creed, color, sexual orientation, political affiliation. People come there to watch a drag queen get lowered in a big old shoe in Key West, Florida. Where else does that happen?

New City Players Culminates Their Christmas Trilogy with a World Premiere

Hot off their sold-out runs of A Streetcar Named Desire and Short Plays: Lauder Made, New City Players begins its 9th season with a world premiere by local playwright and ensemble member Tyler Johnson Grimes, titled The Last Christmas.

Fans of New City Players’ last two holiday productions will see continuity between this new play and 2022’s It’s A Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play and 2023’s A Christmas Carol: A Live Radio Play

For one, The Last Christmas brings us back to WNCP Studios, the fictional Fort Lauderdale-based radio station founded by Freddie Filmore in the 1930s and made famous for its live radio broadcasts.

To recap: In 2022, audiences enjoyed WNCP’s 1947 magical live radio production of It’s a Wonderful Life In 2023, we jumped ahead to 1971, where things got groovy—and a little meta. Freddie Filmore’s children, Alastair and Frances, have inherited the radio station, and Alastair is ready to sell. After the broadcast of A

Christmas Carol, he plans to shut it down—until he has his own Christmas Carol experience during the broadcast! For those immensely interested, check out the WNCP timeline, which highlights major historical moments for WNCP from 1938 to 1998.

Johnson Grimes penned the WNCP-specific adaptation of A Christmas Carol last season, and this year, he created the wholly original play The Last Christmas, where WNCP finds itself at the turn of the millennium on Christmas Eve 1999. The biggest change? Radio plays are a thing of the past, and the station now has a flagship program: “Calling Claire” (a young Claire Phillips played a key role in the 1971 A Christmas Carol broadcast).

The Last Christmas invites you to tune in once again to WNCP Radio. It’s December 24, 1999, and Eve Hart finds herself alone at the mic for the first time, filling in for the legendary host of Calling Claire. As anonymous callers share memories of love, loss, and a little holiday magic, Eve and her close-knit crew of radio misfits discover that sometimes the heart of Christmas isn’t wrapped in

a bow—it’s found in unexpected moments and imperfect connections. Set against a backdrop of Y2K jitters and ’90s nostalgia, this third and final entry in our WNCP trilogy reminds us that even in the face of uncertainty, a shared story can help us all find our way home.

In addition to writing the script, Johnson Grimes returns as sound and foley designer. Producing Artistic Director Timothy Mark Davis will direct the production, and the cast includes WNCP regulars Carlos Alayeto, Caroline Tarantolo*, and Marlo Vashti Rodriguez*, along with newcomers to the WNCP universe: Casey Sacco*, Susanna Ninomiya, Summer Davis, Harold Petion*, and Nick Valdes (*denotes NCP Ensemble member).

New City Players has planned some exciting post-show events that take audiences Beyond the Stage:

● Opening Night Reception: Enjoy libations, baked goods, and bites with the cast and creative team immediately following the show! December 7 after the 8 p.m. show.

● Friday Carolers: Enjoy live caroling from the Yuletide Carolers plus complimentary holiday libations immediately following the show. December 13 and 20.

● Secret Santa Saturdays: Bring a wrapped gift ($15 or less) for a post-show gift exchange! December 14 and 21 (8 p.m. shows only).

● Sunday Talkbacks: Dive deeper into the process of bringing a new play to life with the cast and creative team after every Sunday performance. December 8, 15, and 22.

● Pay What You Wish Preview: This special “pay what you wish” performance offers tickets from $5–$25. Friday, December 6, at 8 p.m.

The Last Christmas will run for 12 performances from December 7 to 22 and performances will take place at Island City Stage. Tickets can be purchased online at NewCityPlayers.org/Season or by calling (954) 376-6114.

Hallelujah! Embrace the Joy of the Season with South Florida Symphony Orchestra’s Performance of Handel’s Messiah and Holiday Pops

South Florida Symphony Orchestra (SFSO), led by Sebrina María Alfonso, returns to illuminate and inspire joy this holiday season with its beloved performances of Handel’s glorious Messiah (Part 1, the Christmas portion) culminating in the iconic “Hallelujah” chorus, and timeless uplifting Holiday Pops on Dec. 7, 2024 at 7:30 p.m., at The Parker in Fort Lauderdale and on December 8, at 4 p.m., at Barry University in Miami. SFSO will be joined by vocal soloists Rachel Blaustein (soprano), Lisa Marie Rogali (mezzo-soprano), Norman Shankle (tenor) and Rafael Porto (bass-baritone) and the South Florida Symphony Chorus.

Each season, orchestras the world over delight in performing one of classical music’s most well-known and uplifting masterworks. Jonathan Kandell of Smithsonian magazine writes, “A musical rite of the holiday season, the Baroque-era oratorio still awes listeners 250 years after the composer’s death.” In 1789, Mozart posthumously paid Handel the supreme compliment of reorchestrating Messiah but even Mozart confessed himself to be humble in the face of Handel's genius describing his orchestrations: "When he chooses, he strikes like a thunderbolt." In 1823, Beethoven proclaimed Handel to be the ‘greatest’ composer that ever lived.

“SFSO’s annual Messiah concert has fast become a timehonored tradition,” said Jacqueline Lorber, president and CEO of South Florida Symphony Orchestra. “We love and are honored to share in the spirit of the holidays with our audiences in celebration of our families, friends, and beautiful

music. It is our way of bringing communities together with a message of joy, appreciation, harmony, and peace.”

SFSO’s 2024 holiday program will open with a selection of Holiday Pops festive favorites including “Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree,” “Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire),” “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” “Ocho Kandalikas,” “Ave Maria” (Schubert), and “Dreidel Song.” Audiences are also invited to sing along to a special medley of cherished classics - "Jingle, Bells," "Silent Night," "Joy to the World" and more.

Per tradition, SFSO will close the joyous evening with Part I of Handel’s Messiah culminating with the iconic “Hallelujah” chorus as sung by the South Florida Symphony Chorus, made-up of seasoned chorale singers and community talent, directed by Dr. Giselle Elgarresta Rios. Rios and Maestra Alfonso collaborated to create the South Florida Symphony Chorus in 2019, which made its debut at the Beethoven 250th celebration in February of 2020.

Tickets for Handel’s Messiah at both venues start at $25, plus fees.

For the Dec. 7, 2024 concert at The Parker, purchase tickets online at southfloridasymphony.org/handels-messiah or via the Broward Center for the Performing Arts Box Office at (954) 462-0222. For the Dec. 8, 2024 performance at Barry University’s Shepard & Ruth K. Broad Performing Arts Center, order online at southfloridasymphony.org/ handels-messiah or via phone at (954) 522-8445.

Holiday Fabulosity! Todrik Hall and GMCSF Unite In Song

With an endless supply of energy, Todrick Hall accomplishes more in an hour than most people accomplish in a week. Fresh on the heels from sold-out runs in Glasgow, Scotland and Manchester, England of a new West End bound musical titled Burlesque, The Musical, where Todrick not only plays the role of Sean, but also contributed new music and lyrics for the score, Fort Lauderdale will once again get to experience the “Todrick Hall phenomenon” when he teams up with our very own Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida for a spectacular holiday concert. I was lucky enough to catch up with Todrick for a pre-concert chat and was delighted to know that he was super excited to be back performing for our welcoming LGBTQ+ audiences.

Charles: Hello Todrick! Welcome back to Florida! This year you’re at the Seminole Hard Rock in Hollywood with our amazing GMCSF in their December 17th holiday show. What do you have in store for us?

Todrick: I’m excited to sing some songs that are classics and I’m excited to share the holidays with people who are proud members of the LGBTQ+ community, who have invested their time in the arts to create this musical community within our own community.

Charles: Is this your first time performing with the GMCSF?

Todrick: Yes, this is my first time performing with them, but I have performed with several gay men’s choruses before and it is always such a rewarding experience.

Charles: You’ve been Lola in Kinky Boots on Broadway, Billy Flynn in Chicago on Broadway and the West End. You’ve choreographed music videos for Taylor Swift and Beyonce. And you’re a YouTube sensation with over 3.5 million subscribers on your channel. You’ve even been on Bob’s Burgers! My favorite show! What’s left on your bucket list?

Todrick: I am currently working on writing my first full length musical with eyes of getting my show to Broadway or the West End. I love all forms of entertainment but I think live theater has always been my favorite and has always felt like home to me.

Charles: I love your 2021 album Femuline. My favorite track is “Fabulosity” with the great Chaka Khan. What is yours?

Todrick: I think that “Show Off” featuring Nicole Scherzinger is one of my favorite songs from that album. It was inspired by a song from The Drowsy Chaperone. The song, while sexy, has a fun layer of humor. I also really love “Rainin’ Fellas.” I had the time of my life shooting that music video.

Charles: Who inspires you?

Todrick: I think if the first answer that comes out of anyone’s mouth isn’t Beyoncé there’s a huge problem. All seriousness, she is the person who inspires me the most, not just for her incredible artistry and the level that she performs at but I also have had the privilege of working with her and know firsthand that she’s an incredible human being. Also, my mentors RuPaul and Billy Porter. The fact that they are such trailblazers for our community and have been long before it was the popular thing to do, makes me respect them even more.

Charles: Do you have a special Christmas memory that you would like to share with us?

Todrick: My favorite Christmas ever would probably be the year I turned 10. Fog machines were not something that you would buy a child as a Christmas gift but I had done several seasons of the Nutcracker ballet and I desperately wanted one. My mom moved mountains to be able to get a fog machine in Plainview, Texas. When they surprised me with it, you would’ve thought I won 3 billion dollars in the lottery! I’ll never forget that Christmas.

Charles: If you could grant the world one wish this holiday season, what would it be?

Todrick: If I could grant the world one wish I would give every single human the level of empathy that it would take to not judge others and offer forgiveness to those who make mistakes, which is all of us.

Charles: Thank you so much for your time Todrick. I’ll definitely be there on December 17th.

Todrick: I can’t wait!

Cirque Dreams Holidaze

Is Set to Illuminate The Kravis Center in December

The Raymond F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts is proud to have Cirque Dreams Holidaze returning to Dreyfoos Hall this month. Cirque Dreams Holidaze will be dazzling audiences in West Palm Beach during its 6-week, 60-city U.S. tour this holiday season. Audiences from coast-to-coast will be captivated by this brilliant and whimsical holiday spectacular. As the nation’s premiere family holiday tradition, Cirque Dreams Holidaze will convey the magic of the season with a Broadway-style production infused with contemporary circus arts.

As lights dim and the music swells, a fantastical cast of holiday storybook characters come to life. Both critics and audiences alike agree that Cirque Dreams Holidaze is “a show for all ages to enjoy where families can make Christmas memories together.” And Broadway World

exclaims, “Lose yourself for 90 minutes and go back to those wonderful dreams you had as a kid.”

Imaginative and fun for children to seniors and everyone in between, Cirque Dreams Holidaze features a worldrenowned cast of performers accompanied by an ensemble of aerial circus acts, sleight-of-hand jugglers, fun-loving skippers, breath-catching acrobatics, and much more. An original music score includes new twists on seasonal favorites such as “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” and “Carol of the Bells.” Singers, dancers, penguins, toy soldiers, and reindeer invoke the dreams behind a child’s eye on the most magical of nights. Amidst a backdrop of new sets, scenery, and storylines, this family-friendly production is sure to put a twinkle in your eye!

Drag Superstar Roxxxy Andrews Is Here to Spread Some Holiday Cheer!

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, and the queens of RuPaul’s Drag Race are excited to make your holidays a little extra special.

Murray and Peter proudly present the 10th anniversary of A Drag Queen Christmas, bringing its 2024 tour to the Jacksonville Center for the Performing Arts (December 26), South Florida’s Coral Springs Center for the Arts (December 27), the Straz Center in Tampa (December 28), and the Fillmore Miami Beach at the Jackie Gleason Theater (December 29). Featuring winners, all stars, and fan favorites, this annual production is a festive experience full of jaw-dropping performances and electrifying lip-sync battles.

Among this year’s iconic cast lineup is Roxxxy Andrews, fresh off her run with All Stars 9, where contestants competed for a $200,000 contribution to a charity of their choice. Back for the third time, Roxxxy showcased her evolution and growth as an artist, proving she remains a force to be reckoned with.

OutClique caught up with the superstar to talk more about A Drag Queen Christmas and what the holidays mean to her, as well as her return to the mainstage, why she chose the Miracle of Love for her charity, and redemption for pageant queens.

Denny Patterson: How excited are you to be a part of this year’s Drag Queen Christmas?

Roxxxy Andrews: Oh my God, so excited! I was involved with the earlier days of the Christmas tour, and seeing what it has evolved into 10 years later, it’s super fun to be asked back. I love the holidays.

Denny Patterson: Can you give us a hint as to what we can expect from your set?

Roxxxy Andrews: There’s two performances for each queen, and for me, I always start with a little holiday

cheer. Then I go into good ol’ Roxxxy that everybody wants to see. A little shaking and a little bumping with a good classic number. I’m a lip sync assassin; I've got to keep that reputation!

Denny Patterson: There are several LGBTQ+ people who struggle during this time of year. What advice or words of comfort can you offer them?

Roxxxy Andrews: Listen, I feel you. I’m with you. I get it, and know that you’re not alone. If you don't have family, celebrate with the people that you do love, because it's the exact same. Just because you don't have the same blood running through your body doesn’t mean you’re not family. And for the people who are struggling money wise, know it's not about the materialistic things. It's about those moments you get to spend with those people you love. I always tell people, just bring yourselves. They're like, well, we don't have any presents and whatever, and that shouldn’t matter. We just want to celebrate with each other, give a shout out to those who are going through tough times, and remember the people we lost. I go through Christmas morning reaching out to everybody I love. With today’s technology, it’s quick to send a text saying ‘Merry Christmas,’ ‘Happy Hanukkah,’ or whatever, but a phone call means so much more.

Denny Patterson: Coming fresh off the most recent U.S. All Stars season, how much of a whirlwind has this year been for you?

Roxxxy Andrews: Insane! People, of course, have their feelings about the show, and I always say, everything that’s meant to be will be. Unfortunately, it wasn’t for me, but the fans had a way of making every girl from All Stars 9 feel like a winner. It was for charity, the first of its kind, and we were so excited to raise money for all our charities. The whole shebang of All Stars 9 has literally been my favorite from all the seasons. Filming, touring, the girls. Sorry, RoLaskaTox, but this was a lot of fun for me.
