What are you Thankful For?

November invites us to pause and appreciate the small joys in our lives—the changing leaves, the warmth of shared meals, and the connections we forge. It’s also a month associated with gratitude and reflection.

I took time recently to reflect upon what I’m thankful for, and came to the conclusion that I have much more to be thankful for than I realized. I appreciate our LGBTQ community that enhances our lives and fosters a sense of belonging. I’m grateful for our partnerships, whose support and collaboration play a crucial role in OutClique’s success. And, I’m thankful for our dedicated team whose hard work, creativity, commitment, unique skills, and perspectives enrich our content and strengthen our community.

Several members of the team also shared what they appreciate in their lives. Will White, Senior Associate Editor, said, “I’m thankful for the companionship of my 3 dogs that are always by my side.” Chandler Scott, Social Media Director, added, “I’m grateful for the fall season, the changing leaves, and the cool weather.” Charles Baran, OCQ Ambassador and writer, shared, “What I am most thankful for are my friends and family. As I get older, we grow closer. And for that I am truly thankful.” Sach Chokami, Director of Graphic Design, expressed, “I am always grateful for having excellent friends around me who are like family. Most importantly, I am thankful for being raised to be resilient in life and to never give up. My father often said, ‘Enjoy life as best as possible without hurting yourself or others, and never give up when facing obstacles along the way.’”

We hope you’ll take time this November to think about what you’re most thankful for. You’ll find that gratitude helps to lift your spirits, focus on the positive aspects of life, and strengthen relationships.

May happiness be abounding.1

Warm wishes,

Easterday-Holder, A. DMA (former Chair and Professor of Music at Carson-Newman University and choir member Immanuel Baptist Church, Lexington, KY). (www.ibclex.org)

Cher: The Memoir, Part One Available November 19

Dey Street Books, an imprint of the William Morrow Group at HarperCollins Publishers, is proud to announce that Cher: The Memoir, Part One, will be published in the US on November 19, 2024.

The extraordinary life of Cher can be told by only one person . . . Cher herself.

After more than seventy years of fighting to live her life on her own terms, Cher finally reveals her true story in intimate detail, in a two-part memoir. Her remarkable career is unique and unparalleled. The only woman to top Billboard charts in seven consecutive decades, she is the winner of an Academy Award, an Emmy, a Grammy, and a Cannes Film Festival Award, and an inductee to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame who has been lauded by the Kennedy Center.

With her trademark honesty and humor, Cher: The Memoir traces how this diamond in the rough succeeded with no plan and little confidence to become the trailblazing superstar the world has been unable to ignore for more than half a century.

Cher: The Memoir, Part One follows her extraordinary beginnings through childhood to meeting and marrying Sonny Bono—and reveals the highly complicated relationship that made them world-famous, but eventually drove them apart. Cher: The Memoir, Part Two will follow in 2025.

Cher: The Memoir reveals the daughter, the sister, the wife, the lover, the mother, and the superstar.

It is a life too immense for only one book.

B&D Trap BBQ

Bringing Authentic Texas-Style Barbecue to South Florida

B&D Trap BBQ has quickly established itself as a goto destination for authentic Texas-style barbecue since its opening in the heart of downtown Fort Lauderdale in March 2024. As the restaurant expands with a second location in Miami, co-founder Kevin Rodriguez sat down with us to share the inspiration behind this culinary venture and his vision for bringing the rich flavors of Texas BBQ to South Florida.

What is the inspiration behind B&D Trap BBQ?

I've always loved BBQ. So, when my business partner and I decided to explore the BBQ scene, we traveled across the country, tasting different styles. We just kept coming back to that Texas style. It's got this robust, smoky character that's hard to beat.

We knew we had to bring that authentic Texas BBQ flavor back to South Florida. We aimed to create a place not just to eat, but to really enjoy—like a big backyard family gathering. Seeing that vibe come alive in Fort Lauderdale has been incredible, and now we’re thrilled to extend that welcoming atmosphere to our new location at Shoma Bazaar in Doral.

What are some must-try dishes at B&D Trap BBQ?

For starters, our brisket is a labor of love, smoked low and slow to get that perfect blend of tenderness and flavor. Our ribs are another favorite—they’re seasoned with our sweet and savory dry rub, which complements the smoky goodness without overpowering it. For those who love their sauce, we offer our signature BBQ sauce along with a variety of others, but we suggest trying them on their own first! And for dessert, our banana pudding is a musttry—it’s creamy, sweet, and the perfect way to end a meal.

How does B&D Trap BBQ plan to foster community connections during this holiday season?

During this holiday season, we plan to partner with local organizations for charity events, reinforcing our commitment to giving back to our community.

We've enjoyed catering everything from graduation parties to office celebrations to big community events at B&D Trap BBQ. Especially around the holidays, we love stepping in so you can hang out with your family or watch the game without fussing over the food. It’s all about enjoying those moments, and we’re here to make that happen.

Eagle Wilton Manors Soaring Like Never Before

Like all good leather bars, Eagle Wilton Manors only gets better with age. The venerable bar is celebrating its fifth anniversary with a new look and a new party.

Florida Leather Weekend is November 14-17, 2024, and Eagle is about the party. They’re kicking off the weekend with a Welcome Party and Harness Night on Thursday, November 14, at 9 p.m.

The harness is a ubiquitous part of the leather look, but not all harnesses are created equal. Eagle’s Chuck King says this party is a chance for people to strut their stuff.

“There are literally thousands of styles of harnesses. They are made for all types of bodies, and not all harness types look good on everyone, so individuals should spend time trying different types to see what compliments their body the best.”

The night is also a chance to meet this year’s contestants for Mr. Eagle. There’s a lot on the line, as the winner will go to IML in Chicago in May. Making a good first impression on judges and patrons is crucial.

“Contestants should be open, eager, humble, and able to approach individuals and judges to show their true

selves,” King said. “We want them to be comfortable and represent themselves by doing some service for their own travel fund.”

As for what makes a good contestant, King says it’s all about the attitude.

“We are looking for a male-identifying individual who will represent the Eagle brand in a positive light, embrace leather as part of their lifestyle, do community service, and love to travel.”

The Mr. Eagle Contest will be held at the bar at 7 p.m. on Friday, November 15.

The Eagle team is also excited about a new event: a Folsom-style street fair. On Saturday, November 16, from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m., the lot behind the bar will be home to local artists, retailers, leather makers, and fetish vendors.

Anyone familiar with the San Francisco-based party that inspired this event knows it will be a very fun and unique afternoon and night. There will be bars, DJs, performers, and more on the patio.

Charles Horton Helping Shape Wilton Manors’ Future

When Charles Horton moved to South Florida, his goal was to retire. Turns out, retirement just isn’t his thing.

“I came here planning to retire and ended up buying businesses,” he told OutClique

If you don’t know his name, you likely know his bars, LIT and LeBoy. He’d like that list to get longer.

“I want to do a big, mega club that keeps people from going to the ones in Miami and instead has Miamians coming up here.”

But that is still a work in progress. Finding the right spot at the right time and, most importantly, the right price is not easy. He’s looked at several locations, including the bright, colorful building by Home Depot on NE 4th Ave and a spot near Peter Pan Diner. Wilton Manors, Oakland Park, and Fort Lauderdale all have onerous parking regulations. Add to that the fact that buildings and businesses are going for one million dollars or more above value, Horton has to look hard to find the right opportunity.

While the income is great, Horton says he’s motivated by pushing the community forward.

“Wilton Manors is a very unique little place. You couldn’t replicate it anywhere in the United States. I’m glad I moved here.”

Horton is becoming an increasingly important player in and around Wilton Manors. He opens his doors to organizations to hold fundraisers. LeBoy has welcomed arts and entertainment groups for events, and LIT sponsors teams for various LGBTQIA+ leagues. The back patio is often hosting parties and events.

“My philosophy has always been that everyone who’s nice is welcome.”

Horton also opens his home. In addition to a semiregular monthly mixer for friends and community leaders, the Horton household hosts events for philanthropic organizations by his gorgeous pool.

For him, building businesses is about building community. In 2023, LIT was named the best bar for lesbians. LIT also hosts a fun trivia night, even though Horton says he is far from being a trivia king.

“Remember that show Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader? I’m not. If I get one or two of the questions right, I feel good.”

When he’s not helping shape the future, he’s hanging out down south, as in South America. Horton regularly travels to Medellín, Colombia.

“Medellín is like Puerto Vallarta was ten years ago. It’s a great place to go. It’s still a good deal.”

Several of his friends usually go with him, and some have even bought their own vacation homes there. Horton also reveals he’s dating a guy in Medellín, and despite the distance, they are making it work and having fun.

“People that love it, love it.”

So for now, Horton owns two thriving bars and is in a multi-hemispheric relationship. It’ll be exciting to watch his professional and personal lives grow and see how his generosity will continue to nurture our community.

AHF Fund Fuels Emergency Relief in Haiti

Through an AHF Fund grant, non-profit organization Hope for Children - A Promise for Haiti braved unpredictable security situations while delivering lifesaving medicines, HIV testing, and free hot meals to school children across three communities amid the country's humanitarian crisis.

Throughout the four-month grant period this year, Hope for Children served 6,000 hot meals to school children, tested more than 4,300 people for HIV and syphilis, and established a mobile medical clinic for hard-to-reach communities. Along with testing at local community centers and schools, staff provided counseling and educational materials and promptly referred anyone with a positive result for treatment.

The mobile clinic, a core element of the project, reached more than 7,400 people, offering accessible healthcare and medications to ease the strain on the local healthcare system. Alongside these services, sessions were held on disease prevention and management, empowering community members to take control of their health.

The initiative provided immediate relief with vital services and laid the groundwork for sustainable health solutions for the future, fostering hope and resilience among those served.

Dating a Daddy Are Age Gap Relationships Good

Are age gap relationships weird?

Here’s the deal: it’s only weird if you let it be. People are always going to have opinions, but the power lies in whether you let those opinions dictate your happiness. I’ve seen younger guys in toxic relationships with someone their own age, and I’ve also seen couples with a big age gap absolutely thriving.

So, is an age gap a good or bad thing? Let’s break it down.

The Good:

1. A Fresh Perspective: Being in an age-gap relationship can be amazing for both partners. The older partner often brings stability and wisdom, while the younger partner brings fresh energy and a sense of adventure. It’s a win-win!

2. Learning Together: Here’s something I firmly believe - learning never stops. Age-gap relationships can be an incredible learning experience for both partners. Older partners might gain a new outlook on life, and younger partners can mature and pick up some serious life skills.

3. Balance is Key: Balance is everything, especially

Danny Morales

or Bad?

in age-gap relationships. From the outside, it might seem like only the younger partner benefits, but that’s not the case - it’s about both partners contributing to the relationship in different ways.

The Bad:

1. The Social Stigma: Let’s be real - people can be judgy, and the social stigma around age-gap relationships is real. Sometimes, the toughest opinions come from those closest to you, like your parents. If your partner is closer in age to your parents, it can make for some awkward conversations!

2. The “Father & Son” Dynamic: This one’s tricky. Some age-gap relationships can fall into this dynamic, which can be hard to break free from. It’s where that whole “Daddy” thing comes from, right? There’s a lot of psychology behind this - attachment theory, Oedipal complex, you name it. But the key is to recognize it and work on keeping things balanced.

3. Generational Gaps: Let’s not forget - different generations can have different views on life, politics, and social issues. These differences can cause friction if you’re not on the same page.

Where Health is More Than Your Lab Results

Latinos Salud’s hugely popular Food Bazaar last month in the parking lot at their Wilton Manors community clinic was just the latest demonstration of the agency’s holistic focus on health.

In between bites of home-cooked dishes, each prepared by Latinos Salud’s own staff and members, and each showcasing the cuisine from one of a dozen different countries and territories, OutClique magazine asked the agency’s leaders about what had led them to center a holistic health approach in all the services they offer.

“Your health is more than your lab results,” said Dr. Stephen Fallon, the agency’s co-founder and Executive Director. “Of course, testing and screening are the foundation of our services. Our providers and staff use lab results to effectively diagnose and then treat everything from diabetes to HIV. But you don’t live in a test tube, and your condition is not your identity.”

Co-founder and Director of Health Programs, Rafaelé Narváez, added that the person-centered cultural norms that the agency’s staff activate each day play a critical role in the remarkable success of Latinos Salud’s patients and clients. “It’s second nature in many Latino cultures to focus first on you as a person, not as a problem to be solved. You feel respected and calm right from the start when you enter our doors, from the smile that first welcomes you to the clean and spacious foyer in each of our locations.”

Latinos Salud’s patients are more likely to stick to their health goals because, at every step, they know that they’re not in it alone. Staff reach out to support their clients and patients regularly, not just to schedule the next appointment.

If you’ve ever spent too long in a cramped waiting room, felt your concerns were brushed aside by your medical provider, or felt too embarrassed to call when confused

about medical instructions, then you were probably at a clinic that does not use a holistic approach. Latinos Salud sets the benchmark for holistic screening and care; it goes beyond merely respecting your time, it’s about relating to you.

From their North Miami location, Health and Culture Specialist Angel Virla maintains a WhatsApp group of nearly 300 Latinos Salud members, who are as likely to dish about a binge-watchable TV show or upcoming concert as they are to ask about a health concern. “Some members tell us that this constant connection has made them feel less alone, more appreciated. We’re not just

calling to lecture them to take their PrEP or HIV meds.”

Community events are the most visible form of Latinos Salud’s holistic approach. Latinos Salud hosts multiple events each month that bring members together, whether to kayak on the Intracoastal, belt out their best karaoke song, learn to dance in heels, attend a play, or enjoy the tactile expression in painting or sculpting classes.

Just like the savory scent of a favorite dish can linger long after a meal, the warm vibe at each of Latinos Salud’s community clinics brings people back and improves health outcomes for the community.

Slow Burn Theatre Company’s 15th Anniversary Season Soars in a Celebration of Love and Laughter

In August 2009, South Florida saw the birth of a remarkable theater company that has continued to redefine the local arts scene since its inception. Founded by director-choreographer Patrick Fitzwater and actor Matthew Korinko, Slow Burn Theatre Company emerged with a bold mission: to produce contemporary, challenging, and modern musicals that were often overlooked by other theaters in the region. As it celebrates its 15th anniversary season, presented by American National Bank and Visit Lauderdale, and its 10th year at the Broward Center, Slow Burn has delivered an impressive array of entertainment, including 67 full-scale musicals, in a journey marked by innovation, resilience, and artistic excellence.

The company’s inaugural production, Bat Boy: The Musical , debuted in February 2010 at West Boca Community High School’s auditorium. This show set the tone for what audiences could expect from Slow Burn: daring performances that pushed the boundaries of traditional musical theater. The company’s commitment to this vision quickly garnered attention and support from both the community and the broader theater world.

The fall of 2015 marked a significant milestone when Slow Burn Theatre Company began a partnership with the Broward Center, broadening its reach exponentially. This collaboration allowed Slow Burn to stage productions in the Amaturo Theater, a state-of-the-art venue befitting its ambitious projects. The company’s southeastern premiere of Big Fish marked the beginning of this exciting new chapter.

“The partnership with Slow Burn has been instrumental in helping us deliver on our mission of building community through outstanding arts, entertainment, and impactful educational outreach,” said Matt McNeil, Broward Center’s Vice President of Programming and Marketing. “Patrick’s artistic vision and commitment to excellence advance these goals, while also reaching new audiences and providing memorable experiences.”

Slow Burn’s founders bring a wealth of experience and passion to their roles. Artistic Director Patrick Fitzwater, a visionary, has been nominated for 10 Carbonell Awards, winning for his choreography in Memphis and direction of Next to Normal . His personalized approach to theater has been a cornerstone of Slow Burn’s success. Over the years, he has also served as the company’s choreographer, sound designer, and wig designer. Executive Director Matthew Korinko complements Fitzwater’s artistic leadership with his strategic oversight and operational acumen. Korinko has also captivated audiences onstage in countless critically acclaimed performances with Slow Burn.

“When we started Slow Burn Theatre 15 years ago, we never could have dreamed the size and scope of what we’ve become. We truly wouldn’t be where we are now without the team at the Broward Center and our partnership,” said Korinko. “We’ve reached more people with our productions than we could have ever imagined, and together, we’ve been able to inspire the next generation of both theatergoers and theatermakers – and we’re just getting started.”

Slow Burn’s impact extends beyond the stage. Its commitment to fostering local talent has helped the company become a beloved institution in South Florida’s arts community. It provides a nurturing environment for creative professionals, offering a platform for actors, directors, and designers to develop their talent and showcase their skills. Just this past season, they offered 248 contracts to 119 union and nonunion actors, 82 production designers and crew, 21 musicians, 21 scenic carpenters, and five seamstresses.

The company’s educational programs and community outreach further underscore its dedication to making the arts accessible to all. This includes free performances for Broward County Public School students through the Broward Center’s SEAS program, teacher and student ticket discounts, programs for the neurodiverse and

hearing-impaired through sensory-inclusive and opencaptioned performances, and engagement of the senior community through Elder Arts workshops. For these many accomplishments, the company received the Carbonells’ 2024 Bill von Maurer Award for Theatrical Excellence.

This year, the company topped the Carbonell Award nominations list with an astonishing 28, including at least one nomination in every eligible category—the most of any local professional regional theater company. These nominations acknowledge Slow Burn’s work in its most recent season, featuring Disney’s The Little Mermaid, Into The Woods, and The SpongeBob Musical. The Carbonell Awards will be presented on November 11, 2024.

Last month, the season opened with the Southeastern premiere of the Olivier Award-winning musical The Witches of Eastwick , inspired by the iconic 1987 film starring Jack Nicholson, Cher, Susan Sarandon, and Michelle Pfeiffer.

Next up, Anastasia: The Musical is set to light up the holidays. With a book by celebrated playwright Terrence McNally and music by Stephen Flaherty, the stage musical is inspired by the beloved film and transports

audiences from the twilight of the Russian Empire to the euphoria of 1920s Paris. The soaring score includes hits like “Journey to the Past” and “Once Upon a December.”

Winner of the 1999 Tony Awards for Best Score by Jason Robert Brown and Best Book of a Musical by Alfred Uhry, as well as 2023 Tony for Best Revival of a Musical, Parade is a riveting and gloriously hopeful musical that follows a newlywed Jewish couple, Leo and Lucille Frank, who are struggling to make a life in the old red hills of Georgia. When Leo is accused of an unspeakable crime, it propels them into an unimaginable test of faith, humanity, justice and devotion.

In spring, prepare for laughs with Something Rotten !, a smash hit nominated for 10 Tony Awards. This hilarious journey back to 1595 follows brothers Nick and Nigel Bottom as they compete to write a hit play against the insufferable superstar Shakespeare.

The season culminates with a sizzling summer production of the West End hit The Bodyguard The Musical . Former Secret Service agent turned bodyguard, Frank Farmer, is hired to protect superstar Rachel Marron from an unknown stalker. Each expects to be in charge; what they don’t expect is to fall in love. This breathtakingly romantic thriller features a host of irresistible classics including “Queen of the Night,” “So Emotional,” “One Moment in Time,” “Saving All My Love,” “Run to You,” “I Have Nothing,” “I Wanna Dance with Somebody,” and one of the biggest-selling songs of all time, “I Will Always Love You.”

All’s Fair With Fair Fare

From food on a stick to fried everything, there’s no food like fair food. Just the thought can conjure up the smell of carnival confections wafting through the air. Netflix’s competition show, The Blue Ribbon Baking Championship, puts all those tasty treats on display and pits a group of blue ribbon-pedigreed chefs against each other for the most delicious competition yet.

The champion is Nathan Chandler, a baker from Pocatello, Idaho, a gay man and big fan of South Florida. He vacations here frequently with his partner, Josh (a flower producer), and their friend LD (a florist). Chandler shared his journey and winning creations with OutClique.

One of his social media posts caught the attention of a producer who slid into his DMs and said if he was ever interested in a fair-food-themed competition, to let them know. Before he knew it, he was on set mixing up flour, compote, strawberries, and more. They looked so good the judges hated cutting them.

The competition spanned several rounds, with new challenges each day. “They tell you going into the challenge, and you have a little bit of time to figure out what you’re going to do. It’s an on-the-fly situation,” he said.

Chandler wasn’t afraid to push the limits of baking. “I made a pineapple upside-down cake, which is the one thing everyone says you can’t make quickly. The cake is hot, the fruit is hot. It was scary, but when the culinary people yell at you and say, ‘Bakers, you have twenty-five

minutes left,’ you don’t have a choice. You just gotta go.”

The show is hosted by Jason Biggs of American Pie fame. He not only takes viewers through the challenges but is also the one yelling out how much time is left. Chandler says that was all very real and very stressful. When asked if he ever wanted to turn around and yell, “Shut up, pie guy,” he was quick to respond.

“Oh, absolutely! Or I would look at the other contestants. I’d look over and see they’re halfway done, and I’m still way behind. Every time they would yell a time stamp, I was like, ‘Be quiet!’”

Idaho is known for being very conservative, but between Chandler, Josh, and LD, they’ve carved out a niche for themselves in the community. Call it a Justice League of Fabulousness. They create beautiful arrangements and confections for major events as far away as Salt Lake City and Palm Springs. Since the series dropped, Chandler says people from outside Idaho have detoured from their planned vacations to get fresh treats from his Confections Bakery.

There has been some pushback from LGBTQIA+ haters since the show aired, but mostly, he’s been feeling the love.

“The love outweighs the hate. I’m waking up every day to hundreds of messages from people all over the world. We’re not on there doing anything crazy. We’re baking cake.”

The Easiest Prayer is “Thank You”

As a pastor, people often tell me, “I don’t pray,” or “I don’t know how to pray,” or, probably my favorite, “My prayers are really bad!”

My usual response is: “Don’t worry. The words don’t matter. It’s the intention of your heart.”

I believe that God already knows what is on our hearts and minds. Prayer is an opportunity for us to make sense of things, to prioritize our problems, come to grips with our struggles, and to feel empathy and compassion for others. The words don’t matter all that much.

But still, prayer can be hard, even if God already knows what we want to say. This is why I encourage everyone to start with the simplest prayer of all: thank you.

These are two easy words. You can utter them under your breath, shout them out loud, or have them running in your head throughout your day.

“Thank you” is an opportunity to pause and be mindful of the blessings in your life. “Thank you” is a way to appreciate the people who care for you and offer you their love. “Thank you” is a reminder that every moment is a gift, and we are called to savor all that life has to offer.

In this season of gratitude, I’m reminded of the words of the Medieval mystic Meister Eckhart: “If the only prayer you ever say in your entire life is thank you, it will be enough.”

Friends, let us be grateful for the lives we have and the love we share as a community.

Happy Season of Thanks!

Sunday morning worship at 10:30

We are Open and Affirming!

For the LGBTQ Saints

“O blest communion, fellowship divine! We feebly struggle, they in glory shine; yet all are one in Thee, for all are Thine. Alleluia, Alleluia!”

Those words by William W. How will ring out in many churches on the first Sunday in November. November 1 is All Saints' Day on the Christian calendar, and November 2 is All Souls' Day. On these days, we remember the heroes of our faith tradition and also our departed loved ones, perhaps less well-known to the world but always dear and important to us.

At Sunshine Cathedral, we pray a Litany of the Saints at this time and focus on LGBTQ+ heroes and healers, or as we call them, “saints.”

This year, for All Saints' and All Souls' Sunday, we’ll again remember in prayer: Adele Starr and Jeanne Manford, who started PFLAG; Alan Turing, a gay World War II hero; and Bayard Rustin, the gay man who worked closely with Dr. King to organize the March on Washington. We’ll recall those killed at Pulse in Orlando. We’ll remember Ugandan gay activist and martyr David Kato, pioneering gay politician Harvey Milk, gender role-defying Joan of Arc, transgender activist and Stonewall warrior Marsha P. Johnson, and gay priest Mychal Judge, who was the first recorded first responder to die on 9/11, among many others. Let us bless and be blessed by the memory of our saints.

The Fantasticks

Off-Broadway's longest-running and most beloved musical, The Fantasticks, continues its run through November 17, 2024, at Island City Stage. Audiences are in for a treat with Island City Stage’s South Florida premiere of this reimagined version by original librettist and lyricist Tom Jones, featuring two young, compelling gay leads.

“The Fantasticks is the classic it is for a reason — it’s a beautiful story with a sumptuous score,” said Andy Rogow, artistic director of Island City Stage. “This new same-sex version just makes it all the more relatable to fans, like me, who wore out their albums listening to it. We worked hard to obtain the rights to perform this version, and I'm sure our audiences will fall in love with the show all over again.”

The Fantasticks is an allegorical story loosely based on Edmund Rostand's 1894 play The Romancers (Les Romanesques), concerning two neighboring parents who trick their children into falling in love by pretending to feud. The LGBTQIA+ focused rewrite features two young gay men, Matt and Lewis, at the center of the story, instead of a young man and woman (the original characters were Matt and Luisa).

According to Playbill, during its original run at the Sullivan Street Playhouse in Greenwich Village, The Fantasticks logged a record-breaking 17,162 performances. When the original production closed in 2002, news of the closing made the front page of The New York Times. In 2006, the revival opened at The Theater Center, directed by Jones. That production closed on June 4, 2017, after playing 4,390 performances in the Jerry Orbach Theatre, for a combined total of 21,552 performances in New York—still the longest-running musical production worldwide. Over the years, notable names who have appeared in the OffBroadway and touring productions have included Liza Minnelli, Elliott Gould, F. Murray Abraham, Glenn Close, Keith Charles, Carole Demas, Kristin Chenoweth, and Bert Convy. This newly revised version of the classic show premiered in 2022 in Michigan.

Island City Stage’s production of The Fantasticks is directed by Rogow and stars Jonny Lee Jr. (Lewis), Kevin Hincapie (Matt), Jesse Luttrell (El Gallo), Margot Moreland (Mildred), Michael Gioia (Henry), Rayner Gabriel (Mortimer), Louie San Luis (Mute), and Jeni Hacker (Bessie).

Tony Award-Winning Musical The Cher Show

The Cher Show is 35 smash hits, six decades of stardom, two rock-star husbands, a Grammy, an Oscar, an Emmy, and enough Tony Award-winning Bob Mackie gowns to cause a sequin shortage in New York City, all in one unabashedly fabulous new musical that will have audiences dancing in the aisles!

Superstars come and go. Cher is forever. For six straight decades, only one unstoppable force has flat-out dominated popular culture - breaking down barriers, pushing boundaries and letting nothing and no one stand in her way. The Cher Show is the Tony Award-winning musical of her story, and it’s packed with so much Cher that it takes three women to play her: the bright-eyed kid starting out, the glam pop star, and the icon. Parker Playhouse Presents Sophie Ellis-Bextor

Acclaimed British music artist Sophie Ellis-Bextor, best known for her unique blend of dance-pop, disco, and indie sounds, will be bringing her highly anticipated debut U.S. tour to South Florida’s Parker Playhouse on November 12, 2024.

With a career spanning over two decades, Ellis-Bextor first came to prominence in the late 1990s as the lead singer of the indie rock band Theaudience. She then established herself as a pop diva after captivating audiences worldwide with hits like "Murder on the Dancefloor," which gained renewed popularity after appearing in 2023’s cult film Saltburn, surging on streaming platforms, rising on the U.K. charts, and giving the singer her first appearance on the Billboard Hot 100.

Ellis-Bextor took some time to talk more about her upcoming concert with OutClique, as well as her special connection with audiences, how "Murder on the Dancefloor" is taking her career to new levels, and additional projects.

Denny Patterson: Sophie, what can we expect from this concert?

Sophie Ellis-Bextor: We’ve been doing sort of a whistlestop party through the albums. I’ve got songs as recent as the ones I brought out last year, and then I’ve got all the old stuff and covers that I do. I suppose it’s kind of an extension of what we were doing in the UK, which is called the Kitchen

Disco Tour. I’ve got a spinning wheel with a load of my songs on it as well, so there’s a bit of the unknown in there too. My intention, I have to say, is always to dance with people. Wherever we start, that's usually where we end up.

Denny Patterson: And what do you always hope audiences take away from your sets?

Sophie Ellis-Bextor: I just want people to walk out feeling that they have a bit more spring in their step than they walked in with. I’ve dealt with lots of different themes musically, but ultimately, I’m an optimist, so there's a lot of optimism in my music. I think it's a really big deal if someone buys tickets to my show. It’s not lost on me that someone made the decision to do that. They’ve kept that evening free so they can come and see me, and I want people to feel like they made the right decision.

Denny Patterson: As one of Britain’s biggest pop artists, you emerged in the late 90s/early 2000s. Have you always had a passion and desire to pursue a music career?

Sophie Ellis-Bextor: I believe so. The moment I started singing on stage with a band, which was when I was 16, I really had no other career plans. No matter what kind of twisty road it’s taken—and it’s been very twisty—it’s always been the thing that I do. Ultimately, I’m very fortunate to have something that I feel that way about because you can kind of take it for granted. As soon as I started singing, I was like, This is what I’m supposed to do

South Florida Symphony Orchestra (SFSO)

Launches Its 2024-25 Icons & Rebels Masterworks Season

South Florida Symphony Orchestra (SFSO), led by the award-winning Sebrina María Alfonso, will launch its riveting 2024-25 Icons & Rebels Masterworks season with “100 Years of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue,” an anniversary tribute to one of popular culture’s most beloved masterpieces, featuring acclaimed pianist Benjamin Hochman, the orchestra premiere of Prokofiev’s The Love for Three Oranges Suite and Elgar’s Symphony No. 1 The programs will take place on Wednesday, November 13, 2024, at 7:30 p.m. at The Parker and on Saturday, November 16, at 7:30 p.m., at New World Center.

Celebrating 100 years of Rhapsody in Blue, George Gershwin shocked critics who did not know how to process the unconventional work when it debuted in 1924. Gershwin’s melding of American jazz and classical music broke boundaries and shattered norms. Today, he is revered as one of the greatest American composers of all time. Acclaimed pianist Benjamin Hochman lends his talents to the masterpiece.

Hochman states, “I am excited to perform George Gershwin’s Rhapsody with Maestra Alfonso and the talented musicians of South Florida Symphony Orchestra. It’s an iconic work by a great American genius of the 20th Century who bridged the gap between classical music,

popular music and jazz. Everyone knows this piece and for good reason. I love playing it and can’t wait to share it with you all.”

Sergei Prokofiev, unorthodox and inventive, is known for his neo-classical, modernist approach. His The Love for Three Oranges Suite, taken from his comedic opera, is a whimsical musical jaunt about a cursed prince who is forced to journey to distant lands in search of three rather large oranges, each containing a princess. Will the affable prince break the curse and find his ‘main squeeze’ or run out of juice along the way?

A symphony in A-flat major? Quite rare indeed. Sir Edward Elgar’s Symphony No. 1 stands out as a remarkable exception in this regard. As a violinist, Elgar understood the challenges of playing in A-flat, yet that’s what he boldly composed in his first symphony, which beautifully explores the universal human experiences of love and hope.

Now in its 27th season, SFSO invites audiences to a tantalizing season featuring upcoming works by Mozart, Strauss and Berlioz, plus a glorious Handel’s Messiah performance and an eagerly anticipated orchestra premiere of Bernstein’s satirical masterpiece Candide. The concerts will take place in Fort Lauderdale, Miami and Key West.

For additional information, visit SouthFloridaSymphony.org, call (954) 522-8445 or email info@southfloridasymphony.org.

South Florida Symphony Orchestra’s 27th season opens with an American classic – 100 Years of Gershwin’s genre-defying Rhapsody in Blue, featuring acclaimed pianist Benjamin Hochman. Plus, Prokofiev’s whimsical The Love for Three Oranges Suite and Elgar’s cherished Symphony Number One.

ArtServe Invites Local Artists to Imagine How They’ll Be Remembered in a Thousand Years

When anthropologists unearth our present-day culture a thousand years from now, what will the artwork they find tell them about us and how we lived?

ArtServe posed this question to its local member artists and invited them to display the artwork they feel best represents themselves, their lives, family, and culture in an exhibit, Anthropologist’s Delight, that opened on October 4, 2024, at ArtServe in Fort Lauderdale.

“Humans have been creating art for as long as we’ve been on the Earth,” ArtServe CEO Jason Hughes said. “What they’ve left behind has taught us so much about human nature, what we valued back then, what the world looked like at that time, and how important community has always been for us ever since.”

Anthropologist’s Delight, which features all types of mediums and focuses on the themes of legacy, culture, humanities, and personal interpretations of what being an artist means, is on display through January 3, 2025, and will be open for viewing on New Year’s Day.

ArtServe is located at 1350 E. Sunrise Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale and is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Daily admission is free.

ArtServe inspires, supports, and advances its diverse members, artists, and community by promoting artistic development, education, and prosperity through the exploration and presentation of the visual and performing arts.

Sunshine Cathedral Presents Queer Entertainer

Marty Thomas

Grammy-nominated recording artist and actor Marty Thomas, who has built a dynamic career spanning stage, film, and television, will be bringing his talent and good looks to Fort Lauderdale’s Sunshine Cathedral on November 29, 2024.

From winning Star Search at age 12, beating a thenunknown Britney Spears, and performing in Broadway hits like Wicked, to touring internationally and releasing three full-length albums, Thomas is a versatile performer who continues to shine across all entertainment platforms.

He took some time to talk more about his upcoming South Florida visit and illustrious journey as an LGBTQ+ artist.

Denny Patterson: Marty, how excited are you to perform at South Florida’s Sunshine Cathedral?

Marty Thomas: I'm very excited to perform at Sunshine Cathedral for a lot of different reasons. One, I love visiting the Fort Lauderdale/Miami area because it’s beautiful, I have so many friends there, and I always have such a good time. However, I’ve never done a concert in South Florida before. Little pop-ups and private parties here and there, but never a full set. So, I’m thrilled!

Denny Patterson: Can you give us a hint as to what we can expect from your set?

Marty Thomas: I’m a Broadway baby, so you'll definitely hear a lot of show tunes. Some songs will be from shows that

Sunshine

I’ve done, and some will be from shows I dream of doing. I also grew up around country and gospel, so you’ll hear those types of songs, as well as a little bit of opera. I like to think of my shows as an eclectic experience because I don't like to be put in a box, so I don't put my audiences in a box.

Denny Patterson: What do you enjoy the most about performing for a live audience? What do you feel every time you step out on stage?

Marty Thomas: It's interesting because, like all performers, I get minor stage fright when stepping in front of a large group of people, which I think is completely normal. There’s no way of knowing, and there’s no rhyme or reason as to whether an audience is going to respond well or poorly to you. There are so many factors at hand, and I just try to remind myself that this is not an experience to be frightened of. This is an opportunity to meet a thousand new friends and connect with a thousand new people, spreading the only mission that you have, which is love and light. I have the opportunity to make people feel something and allow them to get to know me better, and I get excited about the experience.

Denny Patterson: Do you have any music projects currently in the works?

Marty Thomas: Yes! I’ve been working on a standards album for the last few years, which will include some jazz music, some country music, and some show tunes, but all songs that have helped shape and guide my career. Kind of like a map.

Men Who Dance Humanity Lives on Stage and Film

It’s no secret that ballet, jazz, modern dance, and hip-hop have brought pleasure and excitement to audiences around the world for many years. It’s a special treat to sit in an auditorium and watch in awe as technically gifted dancers push their physically toned bodies to limits that we ordinary humans think are impossible. It’s also no secret that to be a professional dancer, long hours of hard work and discipline are required. But a dancer’s life is much more than years of training and dedication; it is often filled with heartache, disappointments, and pain, both physical and emotional. For male dancers, issues of homophobia, cultural machismo, and discrimination also come into play.

Rafi Maldonado-Lopez, the former Director of Contemporary and Jazz Dance at Miami City Ballet when the great Edward Villella helmed the esteemed company as Artistic Director, dreamed of one day creating an allmale dance festival. His vision was not only to showcase the tremendous talent of South Florida’s professional male dancers but also the talents of leading male dancers from prestigious companies around the world. His goal was to tell, through dance, the backstories of their lives and the efforts spent fulfilling their destinies—simply to dance. In my conversation with Rafi, where we discussed at length the inspiration for an all-male dance festival, he mentioned a black-and-white 1967 Bell Telephone Hour program, now available on YouTube, where Edward Villella pushes himself through the physical pain and exhaustion of dancing three major roles twice in one day, collapsing each time he exits the stage. It’s difficult to watch—heartbreaking, actually—but necessary to see to fully understand the private world of a professional dancer. This was the passion and humanity that Rafi wanted to explore and capture on stage in his “dream” festival.

Rafi, who now serves as the Principal Managing Director of the Sanctuary of the Arts in Coral Gables and as the Founding Artistic Director of the Inter-American Choreographic Institute (ICI), nurtured the seeds of his dream for several years. Finally, five years ago, his vision became a reality with the first Men Who Dance festival. Since 2020— unbelievably, the year of the pandemic marked the debut of Rafi’s monumental undertaking—the festival, which partners with The Broward Center and considers Broward County its natural home, has grown from a single evening to a two-night festival featuring the bravura performances of fifty-plus male dancers from twenty countries. Rafi, in his humble way, stated that “Men Who Dance is now the largest all-male dance festival in the United States.” It has grown so large that Rafi finds it difficult to decide which amazing dancers will be featured. He wishes he had room for all of them. At the rate the festival is growing, that may one day happen. This year, 2024, Rafi is proud that the festival will feature the talents of five principal male dancers from the leading companies of Paraguay, Mexico, Chile, Argentina, and Brazil, who will be dancing alongside principal male dancers from South Florida’s Miami City Ballet and other local professional dancers.

Needless to say, it has taken tremendous focus and effort to grow the festival to its current status. But all the hard work has certainly had its rewards—not only in an increased presence, growing audiences, and a permanent

place in South Florida’s cultural landscape, but also in a documentary film to be released in 2025 by film Director and Producer Abbas Motlagh, and Producer Anne Pollack. Anne, who has a dance background, learned about the Men Who Dance festival only last year when Kent Savage, the Executive Producer of the documentary, contacted her with the exciting proposal. He was passionate about the idea that there was a bigger story to be told. Anne then contacted her friend and colleague, Director Abbas Motlagh, who, in addition to an impressive body of work, had won an Emmy for HBO’s highly acclaimed Hostages. Anne expressed to Abbas that she felt they could create “more than just a documentary on dance.” Abbas, who instantly fell in love with Men Who Dance and the opportunity to preserve the dancers’ stories on film, agreed. As he put it, “I was very lucky the film chose me.” Abbas' films examine “humanist stories that explore the deep relationships between individuals regardless of whether they are gay or straight, male or female.” In fact, his recent independent film titled Across the River deals with the relationship between two heterosexual soldiers, one Iraqi and the other Iranian. In one heartfelt scene, the two men dance together in a clumsy, playful, and awkward way until they disappear over the horizon. Abbas shared, quite empathetically, something a friend recently told him: “Being human is beyond gender.”

Driven by a mutual passion for human rights, Rafi, Abbas,

and Anne began their work on November 11, 2023, three weeks before last year’s opening night. Abbas was so excited about the project that he put work on a feature film aside. Six male dancers and choreographers were selected as the main focus of the film, with Abbas and Anne following them through their daily lives as they prepared for the festival. Initially, Abbas was unsure what to capture and show of these brave individuals who have uncompromisingly dedicated their lives to dance. However, as it turned out, he didn’t need to worry, as the dancers themselves were instrumental in guiding his work. African American dancer and choreographer Randall T. Ward even had Abbas and Anne over for Thanksgiving, sharing a meal with his mom, grandma, and nephews.

The day I spoke with Rafi, Anne, and Abbas was a day of joy. The “final cut” had just arrived in Abbas' inbox at 4 a.m. After viewing the film, Anne was exuberant that their goal had been achieved. Together they had created a film that “validated humanity in the most gracious way possible.” She added, “Yes, it’s definitely much more than just another documentary on dance.” Preparations are now underway for screenings, film festivals, and a 2025 premiere that will most certainly include Broward County. Until then, we have this year’s Men Who Dance festival to look forward to on Saturday, November 30, at 8 p.m., and Sunday, December 1, at 3 p.m. Tickets are available at BrowardCenter.org.

Party with DJ Eliad Cohen at URGE Miami Festival

URGE Miami Festival will return this Thanksgiving weekend with three massive nighttime events and two sizzling daytime fêtes, including the Royal Palm Pool Party and the legendary Beach Party on the sands of South Beach.

“Throughout the years, URGE has become a place where friends, old and new, meet up to celebrate gratitude,” Event Producer Luis Morera says. “It offers a space like no other where everyone has the freedom to express themselves while dancing to the sounds of the greatest DJs of our time.”

Featuring a list of the world’s most famous circuit DJs, OutClique had the opportunity to catch up with gay influencer Eliad Cohen, who will spin at the Saturday pool party at the weekend’s host hotel, alongside Yazz Burrell and DJ Jerac.

D Denny Patterson: Eliad, how excited are you for your upcoming appearance at URGE Miami Festival?

Eliad Cohen: I am so excited! I have been working with them for 12-13 years now, and each year, the festival has gotten bigger. Seeing different crowds and meeting people from all around the world, it’s fantastic.

D Denny Patterson: You will be playing at the Saturday pool party at the weekend’s host hotel, The Royal Palm South Beach. What can we expect from your set?

Eliad Cohen: You can expect energetic, happy music, as well as very sexy beats. To me, daytime parties and nighttime

parties are completely different from each other. During the day, you’re outside with your sunglasses, jumping into the pool, and the music just feels happier and more uplifting. I am preparing a very special set for attendees.

D Denny Patterson: Why are special events like URGE so important, especially to the queer community?

Eliad Cohen: We are living in such a crazy world. Things may be so much better for the LGBTQ+ community, but there is still a long way to go. Events like URGE unite us as a community. Every group within the community, whether it be bears, fem queens, drag queens—we’re all coming together, celebrating, and having the time of our lives. It’s such a unique and memorable experience.

D Denny Patterson: And how did your journey with music begin? Has this always been your passion?

Eliad Cohen: Music has always been my passion, but it’s funny. While I was at the water park during the circuit festival, the owner met me and asked if I wanted to dance at the next pool party. I told him I’d never danced at a party before, and he was like, “You’re such a good-looking guy! You’ll do just fine.” So, I did, and I very much enjoyed it. Then they booked me to dance again. Later on, I started my own party, Papa Party, which became very popular very fast and is now one of the top three biggest gay parties in the world. However, when COVID hit, I decided to focus more on music, and I’m excited to announce that I will be releasing my debut album either at the end of this year or early 2025.

Before Abbott Elementary, there was Patrice Patterson at Dartmouth Day School. Shortly before Christmas break, a third grader named Sharifa stands in front of her class and says, “Santa Claus is a Black man from Detroit," sending the school into an uproar. To quell the storm, Patrice, the school's only Black teacher, is asked to create an ad campaign within the school to make Santa white again. As events unfold, Sharifa’s enrollment is placed in jeopardy, and Patrice must decide how to protect Sharifa and ultimately herself. This absurdist comedy examines how race and racial bias can have a foothold on one of the most benign figures — Santa Claus.

POPS HOLIDAY

Plasma Talks Christmas Tour, Drag Race Journey, and More

Are you ready to once again spread holiday joy and merriment with the queens of RuPaul’s Drag Race?

Murray and Peter proudly present the 10th anniversary of A Drag Queen Christmas, bringing its 2024 tour to Florida later in December. OutClique recently caught up with Season 16’s Plasma, who is celebrating her first year with the tour. Exuding vintage-inspired charm and drawing inspiration from the golden age of Hollywood, this New York City queen was a standout and confidently displayed her musical theater chops, which earned her two maxi challenge wins.

Denny Patterson: Hi, Plasma! How excited are you to embark on your debut Drag Queen Christmas tour?

Plasma: I’m thrilled! Christmas in my family—although we’ve parted ways from the Christian Christmas in a lot of ways—remains a huge tradition. So, to be able to celebrate it on the road with some of the titans of our industry is a cool privilege. I’m very, very excited.

Denny Patterson: Coming fresh off the most recent U.S. season, how much of a whirlwind has this year been for you?

Plasma: It’s been wonderful! Drag Race is truly a singular launch pad for drag performers, and I’ve met some of my heroes in the Broadway community because of the show. I’ve met Tony-winning choreographer Jerry Mitchell, Paul Wontorek—who I used to watch on Broadway.com growing up in my parents’ house—and Harvey Fierstein, a prolific

playwright and queer person in the Broadway industry. I got invited to the Emmys and was six feet away from Meryl Streep. The people I’ve been able to be around, that I’ve looked up to for so long, have reminded me of the bombastic opportunity that I was given. Aside from everything that happened on the show, the aftermath has been wonderful.

Denny Patterson: Theater queens seem to not have the best records in the competition. Did that discourage you at all?

Plasma: Look, they gave me a sketch comedy challenge about Barbra Streisand and a rusical about Julie Andrews! When I say I don’t have many complaints or regrets, I genuinely don’t have many complaints or regrets. I don’t feel like I could have gone on at a better time. They were looking for a seamstress, and by God, they found her in one Miss Banana Queen. I don’t feel like I got screwed over. I very much feel like the show happened at the right time, and I was in the right mindset at the right point in my life to capitalize on the same things that Plasma is inspired by or born of. It felt like I was there with intention, purpose, clarity, and focus.

Denny Patterson: If asked to come back for an All Stars season, would you?

Plasma: (Laughs) I’m lucky I get asked this a lot, and my official statement is: I’m not in the habit of turning down good opportunities. So, if the time is right and it makes sense for me, and I’m in a good mental health, financial, and work capacity, then I would absolutely do it.

GMCSF Awarded $13,000 From BBX Capital Foundation Grant

GMCSF proudly attended the BBX Capital Foundation Arts & Culture Grant Presentation, where we were honored to receive a generous $13,000 grant. BBX Capital Foundation's support recognizes our contribution to the arts and celebrates our vital role in uplifting our community through music and advocacy. GMCSF was acknowledged for its significant commitment to fostering inclusivity, diversity, and culture in South Florida. The foundation awarded $201,000 to twenty nonprofits that did not receive state funds. This recognition is a testament to the collective efforts of our members, supporters, and the integral role of our community.

Kerry Waldee, Board Vice Chair; Edward Otto Zielke, Director of Marketing and Sponsorship; and Fidel Garcia, Development Manager, represented GMCSF on Wednesday, October 16, at the BBX Capital offices. Jarett Levan, President and CEO of BBX Capital and Trustee of the BBX Capital Foundation, stated, “The BBX Capital Foundation supports these organizations and initiatives because they align with the Foundation’s commitment to promoting arts, education, and cultural

experiences. We believe they are essential to the growth, economic vitality, and development of our Broward County community.” Executive Director of the BBX Capital Foundation, Lois Marino, added, “This much-needed funding opportunity can provide a significant boost to organizations that work tirelessly to foster creativity and improve the overall well-being of community members.”

The grant we received will directly support our mission to inspire and unite through music. This support is particularly significant, as it will help us continue to create performances that elevate voices within the LGBTQ+ community and amplify our stories. This grant will enable us to expand our reach, ensuring our performances continue to resonate across South Florida and beyond. The ceremony celebrated the collective impact of the organizations present and strengthened the bonds within our nonprofit community.

Congratulations to all the well-deserving nonprofit arts & culture organizations!
