Build Your Support By Steven O. Evans, PhD
I have the absolute honor of working with some amazing people through the venture of this magazine. Stop this moment, grab a pen and paper, and write down ten people you are thankful for and how they have influenced your life. Tape it to your bathroom mirror. I’ve made it a goal to be transparent about 2020 and some of the darkness. I posted one night on Facebook, a simple post - “I’m having a rough time. Who is available to talk?” I’m not saying this to boast, but I had to take the post down in 45 mins because of the number of calls, texts, and messages from people who were truly concerned and reached out to help, that it was inundating my phone. When you need a lifeline, I’ll borrow an analogy from the title of a book by Richard Nelson Bolles, What Color is Your Parachute?1 Who is there in your world that you can count on when you need that support? I want to take this time to thank those people that were there for me. Life is so short and so precious. I hope that in the last year we have all learned to appreciate the people in our lives, because in the end, those individuals are what make us who we are, and bring us the joy within. 2021 promises to be a new year. Let’s celebrate it, as we are truly Greater Together2. May happiness be abounding3. Steven O. Evans, PhD

Light the Night
Innovative tech uses art to unite community
B
By Christina Wood
roward Cultural Division, working in partnership with the Dania Beach-based creative agency Yes We Are Mad (MAD), commissioned four South Florida artists for the open-air exhibition, Light the Night, a technologybased public art activation, that unleashed the power of color and creativity to lift spirits and bring the community together. “We have been so isolated. I think being outdoors provided a moment for people to go out within their community and enjoy a different scale of art,” says exhibition curator Sofia Bastidas Vivar of MAD. Workers heading home after a long day were surprised by the 10-story high montage of vivid designs and thought-provoking images projected on the side of Society Las Olas. Bicyclists out for evening rides, put on the brakes to take in the swirl of light, color, and motion projected on the façade of the Broward County Government Center. Area residents and business owners passing by NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale didn’t have to go inside to experience art.

Some, like Liz Cole of Hollywood, came out specifically to see the illuminating exhibition, which ran from March 1–7, 2021. “This is the first time I’ve been out at night since we went into lockdown last year,” she said. “I’m so glad I came. The creative energy of this event is making me feel alive again.” Behind the Scenes “One of the goals was to make sure that we brought people together in a safe outdoor space to enjoy art,” Bastidas Vivar says. “Another goal of this project was to introduce local artists to projection mapping and give them an opportunity to work with this new technology.” Months before the project lit up the streets of Fort Lauderdale, the Broward Cultural Division sought out South Florida artists who had experience working with video. Eight were selected to take part in a paid, one-day residency hosted by MAD, where they learned about the technology involved with 3D video mapping, a projection technique that considers the unique dimensions and features of a building. “Partnering with MAD
Following the residency, each of the eight artists submitted design proposals for original videos to be projected in downtown Fort Lauderdale. The Broward Cultural Division’s Public Art & Design committee reviewed the submissions and selected four artists who were then commissioned to participate in Light the Night. Edison Peñafiel, whose work is a response to issues concerning displacement, forced migration, and identity, was one of the artists selected to participate in the innovative exhibition. “It was very exciting to create something specific for a public space,” he says. “We received some guidelines of how 3D mapping works, how to approach the spaces, and what to take into account when creating the digital work.” Agustina Woodgate, Jen Clay, and Monica Lopez de Victoria are the other artists commissioned to create projection mapping videos for the project. Light the Night also featured videos created by artists Jen Stark, David Lewandowski, and Matthew Schreiber.
Beneath the Surface “I love that the Broward Cultural Division has invested in South Florida artists by supporting their creativity. This year especially,” says Lopez De Victoria, whose work highlights underwater movement. “It is a great project because the county is making the artwork accessible to people who might not normally go to a museum or gallery by bringing the artwork to the streets!” Bastidas Vivar agrees. “You’re not excluding anybody from the experience,” she says. “It’s outdoors. It’s public. It’s open. And it’s extremely large, so you have better reach.” “It’s always so exciting to see the juiciness of projected shapes and colors moving in a giant way on a building,” Lopez De Victoria says. “It then makes the video piece an animated mural that anyone can see!” “I have lately been inspired by the feelings of isolation and the holding suspension of being underwater. I wanted to go inward in this piece and reflect on this hard time that we are experiencing with COVID[-19],” Lopez De Victoria says. “I am visually expressing the rippling emotions and contemplation that comes with time alone.”
Also on display were videos by Quisqueya Henriquez, Susanne M. Winterling, Samson Kambalu, Raul Ferrera-Balanquet, Diana Shpungin, Rachel Perry, and Samantha Salzinger, courtesy of the collections of NSU Art Museum and the Francie Bishop Good and David Horvitz collection at the Girls’ Club.
“Bringing 3D mapping video into the public sphere creates more connections and accessibility to the public to experience art,” Peñafiel says. “Regardless of the work, which can focus solely on a visual experience or a socio-political theme, it is great to have these spaces facilitated by the county government and in collaboration with MAD.”

enabled us to provide a unique opportunity for local artists to learn how to use this cutting-edge technology and work with a creative team to expand their artistic practice,” Broward Cultural Division Director Phillip Dunlap says.

Airport Employee Art Exhibition I Bet You Didn’t Know! Artworks by 43 airport employees on view until September 10, 2021 Photos by Curator Christina Roldan
B
roward County’s Fort LauderdaleHollywood International Airport (FLL) is proud to announce the fifth installment of its employee artwork exhibition titled I Bet You Didn’t Know! The artworks will be on display through September 10, 2021, in the walkway connecting Terminals 3 and 4. I Bet You Didn’t Know! features a wide range of artworks including acrylic, watercolor, and oil paintings, bronze and ceramic sculptures, mixed media installations, photography, video, poetry, and music. Since its debut in August 2018, this rotating employee exhibition program has been enthusiastically received by the airport community and visitors, and employee participation has grown significantly. “Public art in an airport helps to create a sense of place and serves as a creative welcome

for visitors,” said Mark Gale, CEO/Director of Aviation of the Broward County Aviation Department (BCAD). “At FLL, we are fortunate to have such talented employees who can offer visitors a warm greeting to our destination.” The latest I Bet You Didn’t Know! installation displays the work of 43 employee artists and is curated by Broward County Cultural Division Public Art Manager Christina Roldan. The exhibition rotates every six months to give the more than 15,000 FLL employees a bi-yearly opportunity to be inspired by their colleagues and submit new work. The exhibition also serves as a unique platform to showcase the creative side of airport employees to the airport’s guests. “The invitation to exhibit an art piece at the airport revived my enthusiasm for art,” said Alejandro Cuevas, a BCAD Expansion Project
Administrator and participating artist. “The entire process of creating my sculpture, I’ll Drive the Bug, a tribute to my 1964 Volkswagen Beetle, reminded me of how much I love to draw, design, and create. Also, in my kids’ eyes, the sculpture reassured them that daddy is still cool by building fun stuff.” I Bet You Didn’t Know! is a collaborative exhibition presented by FLL and Broward Cultural Division’s Public Art & Design program. Additional temporary exhibitions currently on view at FLL: • En Plane Air in Terminal 2: Territory Takeoff, an exhibition of artworks created by children ages 6-18 inspired by the Florida Panthers hockey club’s logo/brand and the team’s namesake animal, the Florida panther and its natural habitat. This exhibition is a partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County, the Florida Panthers, and FLL. • En Plane Air in Terminal 3: Florida Nature Prints, an exhibition featuring paintings created by children attendees ages 4-10 of the Roosevelt Gardens Park summer camp in the Broward Municipal Services District.

Andrew Christian’s Trophy Boy of 2021 By Alexander Rodriguez, Host of On the Rocks with Alexander Photos Courtesy of Andrew Christian, Inc. and Sasa Productions 32 | OutClique.com
E
yebrows, and more, started to rise as adult film star Lucas Leon started to pop up in the Instagram stories for Andrew Christian. With a chiseled, handsome face that rivals any telenovela star, a muscled body with perfect pecs, a light sprinkling of body hair in all the right places, and a mischievous grin that could charm a nun and seduce the saintliest of gays at the same time, it is no wonder that Andrew Christian, the Patron Saint of Men’s Underwear, has chosen Lucas as Breakout Trophy Boy of 2021.
alter Lucas’ Trophy Boy coming-out parties. Until it is safe to venture out, Andrew Christian has turned its focus to more interviews and alternative events, especially virtually. But, once the world gets the green light, Lucas will tour around the globe visiting various pride events and working with Trophy Boy VIP Card partners. Meanwhile, Andrew Christian has partnered with over 100 brands worldwide to bring exclusive offers to the fans via the Trophy Boy VIP Card, so that they can feel like the Trophy Boys they are.
So what does it take to become an Andrew Christian Trophy Boy? According to Andrew Christian, it’s more than just a great body and full package: An Andrew Christian Trophy Boy is a brand representative and must be aware of the image they are projecting. We look for a diverse group of boys that will [not only] uphold the Andrew Christian name, but show the diversity within our community. There’s a big responsibility with touring the world, getting to know fans, and, not only being a face, but an entire lifestyle of the brand. All of the boys have strong personalities that are magnified through this role and it is important that they are always professional and appreciative of the experiences they’ve been blessed with. Trophy Boys are positive influences in the world and show love for themselves and the greater community.
I chatted with Lucas for this exclusive rapid-fire chat where we chatted about his past, the adult industry, becoming a Trophy Boy, and what his type is – you may be surprised!
You may have seen the Trophy Boys in person during Pride, nightclub, or pool events around the nation. They do have the reputation for causing a little mischief and maybe some romance drama from time to time, but their personalities and charm have established the Andrew Christian blog and YouTube channel as the barely safe-for-work fun place to play. COVID-19 and the pandemic has certainly changed the gay nightlife experience and will
Alexander
Rodriguez:
What do you miss most about life in Brazil?
Lucas Leon: I miss some of my friends and how warm and affectionate most people are.
AR
What was the hardest to get used to in moving to the U.S.?
LL
It wasn’t that hard to adapt. The hardest part was holding back when it comes to kissing and hugging strangers after you just meet them!
AR
You moved to the West Coast for a boy! Are you glad you moved there? Would you ever move again for a boy?
LL
When we are young, in love, and stupid, we do crazy things sometimes, but hey, some good things came from it. I do like the West Coast a lot. Los Angeles is very urban and diverse, which I love, but I’m definitely gonna miss dressing up all pretty like I did during those New England fall months.
AR
How did you get used to all the thirsty comments on your social media pics? OutClique.com | 33
LL
I mean, the thirsty comments are usually good feedback that I’m pleasing the audience, and I love that.
AR LL
What made you want to get into the adult industry?
I thought I looked kinda cute and the money is good, so...why not? You get to meet all different sorts of people and travel to different places, so that’s great!
AR
first day?
What was your first adult scene? What was it like on your
LL
The plot was wild, LOL! My brother-in-law just broke up with my sister so I thought that I could cheer him up with a [something]... hahaha! I was quite nervous at first, but you get used to it.
AR LL
What do you love most about filming a scene?
I love the camera and the idea of all eyes on me. It’s kinda hot, to be honest.
AR LL AR
What do you like the least about filming a scene?
When we have to cut to adjust. I like it when it’s more natural.
What kind of guy do you find attractive in real life, but never get paired up to film with?
LL
Big strong, very hairy bears; they’re my favorites! I’m never paired with them.
AR
You are single. How should someone approach you to flirt with you? What do you find the cutest about someone?
LL
It’s easy; talk about video games, Japanese culture, or anything geeky. Those are my favorite things. I think it’s super sexy when guys are nice

and caring. It’s a big turn-on.
AR LL
How did you come up with your stage name?
That’s quite an interesting story. One of my good friends is named Lucas and I wanted the name to have some connection to my gaymer and geeky side, so Leon is actually the name of a character in the Kingdom Hearts series who’s originally from Final Fantasy 8.
AR
What was your first reaction when you found out that you were the newest Andrew Christian Trophy Boy?
LL
I was shocked and super excited! It’s always so much fun working with Andrew, and being the 2021 Trophy Boy is a huge deal! It’s really an honor to have been the one picked this year!
AR LL
What does being a Trophy Boy mean to you?
I feel like, as a Trophy Boy, I should try to convey a sense of embracing and celebrating yourself. Geeky things were not very trendy amongst the popular kids when I was growing up, so it’s really cool knowing that even a videogame nerd can be a sexy Trophy Boy.
AR LL
Which one of Andrew Christian’s underwear do you love the most?
I do love briefs the most! Most people would say jocks, but I think briefs make my butt look super sexy.
AR

If you were to design a pair of Andrew Christian underwear, what would they

It would be a cute pair of briefs, either red, pink, or black with geeky elements like joysticks and manga books all over it.

What do you do differently in the bedroom that you don’t do on camera?
Top! Just kidding, I don’t do that at all! [Laughs] I’m a big fan of puppy play. You LOVE gayming! What is your favorite recent game?
My favorite game right now would be Final Fantasy XIV. I’ve played it so much during the lockdown it’s not even funny. [Laughs]
AR LL
Are there hot guys in the gaming world?
There are tons of us, we just hide in our gayming caves every once in a while, so it’s hard to find us. We are like rare Pokémon! LOL!

If you were to create a video game, what would it be and what would it be about?
LL
It would be probably a fantasy JRPG (Japanese role-playing game) that mixes a lot of elements of sci-fi and magical girl anime, set in a digital world. The characters would be 3 E-girls that get trapped in a digital world. It would probably be called E-girl Fantasy…wait, I might have to think of the title a little bit more cause that sounds like the title of a [something else]! [Laughs]

Spice Life
an Interview with Chef Yaniv Cohen By Gregg Shapiro
Photos Courtesy of Fernando Christo
Cover Photo by Fernando Christo 42 | OutClique.com
D
on’t talk to chef Yaniv Cohen if you are the least bit hungry because by the end of the mouth-watering conversation you may find yourself in the kitchen, rifling through the refrigerator and cabinets, looking for something delicious to prepare and consume. Cohen, the man behind the popular Miami restaurant Jaffa, the author of the cookbook My Spice Kitchen, proprietor of TheSpiceDetective.com, and a fierce competitor on Netflix’s Best Leftovers Ever!, took time out of his busy schedule to answer a few questions.
Gregg
Shapiro: I’d like to begin by
congratulating you on the expansion of your restaurant Jaffa, including the forthcoming new location in Hallandale, FL. Why was Hallandale selected?
Yaniv Cohen: It was a combination of
a few things. My first location is in Miami. We started getting a lot of clients from Hallandale, Hollywood, Aventura, and even Fort Lauderdale, driving all the way down to Miami. People always want you to be in their neighborhood. I realized there was a huge potential. A developer, who is also the landlord, started developing a beautiful place between Aventura and Hollywood in Hallandale Beach called Atlantic Village. He wanted to create, in Hallandale, a place for people to go and have great food and activities for kids. He has a swimming academy for kids and a soccer field on the rooftop. Language schools, gyms, and beauty salons. Things that it felt like that specific area was missing. The community is growing. A lot of people are moving from the north. There was a need for all those elements in the community. He loves Jaffa. He actually approached me and said, “I have a space for you. We would love to have you here. I will help you as much as possible to get this thing started.” Of course, this was before COVID! I felt that it was a great win-win situation. We are getting closer to some of our clients. We are providing a great experience of Israel, Middle Eastern, and Mediterranean influences.
Sometimes things come together, and it was the right moment and the right location. I felt there was great potential to be a part of that community.
GS
What would you say is in your background that led you to want to cook and host?
YC
As you know, I come from Israel. My family made aliyah (immigration) from Iraq and Tunisia. Countries with incredible food. Family, Jewish holidays, and Shabbat (sabbath) were always important. Every Shabbat dinner we had a huge meal with friends and family coming over, or we would go over to their place. You could say that hospitality is part of my DNA. Before I even went to school, all I saw was food appearing from like the smallest kitchen you can ever imagine. We have a lot of holidays and Shabbat is once a week. My mom needed help. I’m the oldest of five boys. I told her I would like to help her. I started cooking for my brothers first. Then my mom let me cook for her and my father [laughs]. Their taste buds were a little more developed. Every time I would get stuck on a recipe or I had questions, I would ask my mom. I burned quite a few dishes and made mistakes, but I have to say my mom gave me a lot of encouragement. Almost like a blank canvas on which to experiment. That’s how it all started.
GS
From your perspective as the Spice Detective, is there one spice you simply can’t live without?
YC
[Laughs] that’s the question everybody asks me. It’s a very tough question. What can I tell you? I love all of them. I want to say one and then another one comes to mind. But, if I have to choose one, there’s one that I really love because you don’t even have to cook it. It’s za’atar, which is a Middle Eastern herb from the family of thyme and oregano. We grind it and add some toasted sesame and a little bit of salt. It can go on cheese, your pizza, salad, or fish. You can just sprinkle it in your OutClique.com | 43
44 | OutClique.com
olive oil and dip your bread in it. It’s like a whole new experience. It’s so delicious and earthy.
GS YC
What would you say is your favorite, late-night indulgence dish?
I would have to say pizza, to be honest. If it’s late-night and maybe I had a couple of drinks, the thing that could soak it up is a nice slice with delicious spices and toppings. Za’atar would go very well on it. My favorite is the Neapolitan pizza which has a very nice crust. There’s a delicious doughiness to it. It’s crispy on the outside and the cheese just stays in the center. It’s so good. Melted cheese with tomatoes and bread.
GS YC
What could be bad? When did you first become aware of the link between spices and wellness?
I think from a young age all of the conversations at the dinner table would be, “This is healthy, this is healthy. Eat some onions, eat some herbs.” It wasn’t like my family only had health foods. I didn’t see the inside of a restaurant until a late age. All my food was homemade. Everything, every meal. Even a sandwich I would take to school would have an omelet with onions, cilantro, parsley, a little bit of turmeric, salt, and pepper. All in a fresh baked pita with hummus and Israeli salad. That would be lunch. Home-cooked meals are usually healthier because they’re not processed food. That makes a big difference. The body can recognize all the ingredients, take them apart and use them for fuel and nutrition. I was taught when I was young about the benefits of food. Sometimes you take it for granted. As a kid, you think every family talks about it or everybody knows the anti-inflammatory benefits of turmeric. When I got to the U.S., I realized that wasn’t the case.
GS YC
What drew you to Miami?
I love Miami. When I moved from Israel, I moved to New York first, in the late 1990s. New York was very exciting then. I suffered with the cold weather and the lack of a nearby beach. The climate was very different. I was absorbing a lot of knowledge and working for different chefs, different restaurants. It was exciting. But, every time I would come to Miami for a little vacation, I would be like, “Oh my God, I need to be by the beach!” What I was doing back in New York was working, together with my business partner, for a catering company. We moved to Miami in 2005 and we were not happy with the catering (here). We would come as guests. We thought to ourselves, “We love Miami so OutClique.com | 45
much. Florida is so beautiful. Miami is growing. Art Basel is happening every year. We might need to bring some of our services down here.” I had been thinking about opening a restaurant in New York; thank God I didn’t. We decided to open a Miami branch of our catering service for different corporations and companies. I fell in love even more with Miami and Florida.
GS YC
How does being gay in South Florida compare to being gay in Israel?
I think that what has happened in Israel in the last 20 years is incredible, as far as gay and trans rights. Israelis are very vocal about everything, including their rights. Tel Aviv is a very gay and gay-friendly city. Gays are a part of life. There’s no gay neighborhood in Tel Aviv. Every neighborhood is a little bit gay, or straightfriendly. Gays are also all over the media. You have gay actors, gay anchors, and gay hosts. The 2019 Eurovision (song contest) was one of the gayest! On the one hand, Israel is a very traditional country with family and religion and history. On the other hand, it’s very advanced.
GS YC
It’s progressive.
It’s very progressive on many issues including gay and transgender visibility. They’re not afraid or ashamed, and they speak up. You know how it is, Jews always speak up [laughs]. It’s in our DNA. I find Miami to be very gay-friendly, as well. Fort Lauderdale is a very gay city, too.
GS
Being from Israel, what are your top three off-the-beaten path sights every person needs to see on a visit to Israel?
YC
Most tourists never check out the underground pools in Ramla. This unique boat ride takes you through a 500-square-meter fish-filled reservoir within an eighth-century arched structure in Old Ramla called the Pool of the Arches or the Pool of 46 | OutClique.com

the Goats (in olden times, residents would water their goats between the arches). Five rows of three stone columns each hold up the ceiling and special lighting affords beautiful reflections on the water. Ga’ash Beach is located about a 35-minute drive to the north of Tel Aviv. You’ll need a car, or a local with a car to get there. It’s not an official beach, and there are no lifeguards, but it is beautiful, and the rock and cliff formations are unique. The sandy and rocky beach is clothing-optional and has a reputation as being a gay beach (although many clothed and straight people also go there, too). The beach is popular with locals, and there is plenty of space to relax, bring water, drinks, and snacks. Akko (Acre) is often skipped by tourists while visiting Israel, but I think it is a must see. The old city is stunning! It represents tumultuously the history of the Land of Israel possibly better than any other city in the country. Akko is a city that has been shaped by the Romans, Ottomans, Crusaders, Mamelukes, Byzantines, and British, and fittingly is today home to a brilliantly coexistent mixed population of Jews, Christians, and Muslims. The Old City of Akko is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the oldest ports in the world. The city is also home to part of the Bahai World Center (the other part being in Haifa, just down the road). I would say don’t miss the world-famous fish restaurant Uri Buri in Akko, and check out one of the best hummus spots in Israel, Hummus Said.

Customer Questions for BBB By Rod Davis, CEO, BBB serving Southeast Florida and the Caribbean
E
very day consumers visit our local BBB site (BBB.org/SEFL) here in Southeast Florida and the Caribbean to check on businesses. In January of 2021, consumers checked over 21,000 BBB Business Profile Reports each day to make decisions about whether to hire or purchase from a business.
is our search tool. Next, just enter shutters into the search tool and your zip code. You will be asked if you want to search only BBB Accredited Businesses or all businesses.
Many of the questions coming to us at BBB directly relate to what information is available to help consumers and how to use BBB information. Let’s see what questions have been coming to us from our local consumers and perhaps the questions and answers will help you use BBB information to make good decisions.
BBB Accredited Businesses have agreed to abide by the BBB Code of Accreditation (i.e. good business practices) and work with BBB to resolve disputes should any arise. Once you make your selection, you will be given the option to use other filters. You can sort by distance from your zip code, the BBB Rating (e.g. A-F), and specific types of work needed to help find businesses that deliver exactly the services you need.
Question: Arleen asked, “I need accordian shutters. Which companies have the best rating?” Answer: Hello Arleen, you can use the BBB Online Directory to find businesses using filters to find the best business for you. Just visit the BBB.org/SEFL site and at the top of the website
It is also a good idea to review customer reviews on any business you are considering, in addition to BBB, on review sites like Google, Yelp, and other sites that provide additional feedback to help you find the business that excels in providing great work and working with customers if any issues should arise.
50 | OutClique.com
Question: An anonymous consumer asked BBB on Google about Car Shield. “How long has Car Shield been in business, does BBB recommend the business, and what is their rating?” Answer: The BBB report for all businesses provides some basic information (e.g. how long the business has been in operation, where it is located, the website, reviews/ complaints submitted by customers and any business response, alternate business names used by the business, the number of complaints filed over the last 12 and 36 months, how those complaints are handled, and a BBB Rating based on marketplace actions of the business). Specific to this customer’s request, Car Shield has been in operation for 16 years. The BBB report also indicates that they have an F rating based on advertising issues, 1,624 complaints, and a pattern of complaints that has not been corrected. Additionally, the BBB report includes 826 customer reviews on Car Shield with an average rating of 1.43 out of 5. BBB gathers the collective experiences of our community and that information is the basis for the BBB report/ratings. BBB presents the information and does not endorse a specific business and trusts that consumers will use BBB information and other resources to make
smart decisions based on what information is most important to them. Question: Maria asked, “Can you help me find a good nursing home for my mother?” Answer: When it comes to in-home care or nursing home care for loved ones, BBB encourages you to do a comprehensive and thorough review that includes up front research, onsite visits or extensive interviews, and verifiable references to help substantiate your research findings are solid. You can begin your research on BBB.org/ SEFL and medicare lets you add information into your consideration based on onsite health inspections, staffing to provide quality care, and the quality of resident care. The medicare tool is on their website at Medicare.gov/Care-Compare /?ProviderType=NursingHome&Redirect=True. AARP also provides some great resources and you can review their tips at: AARP.org/ Caregiving/BasicsIinfo-2019/Finding-A-NursingHome.html. We encourage our community to come to BBB. org/SEFL and share your experiences (positive and negative) to help our neighbors find good businesses and reward those businesses that go the extra mile for us!

Committed to Healthy Sex Condoms are Essential to Wellness Condoms are an essential component of highimpact STI (sexually transmitted infection) prevention. They are integral to safe sex, serving as a protective barrier between sexual partners. Setting comfortable terms and boundaries during sexual encounters, including condom use, is essential. When behavioral health is affected, individuals are more likely to neglect this crucial step and engage in high-risk behaviors. It’s important to overcome the stigma surrounding sex and discuss the role of condoms in having safe and informed sexual experiences. According to a 2017 study by the CDC, nationwide, 48% of male students who had sexual contact with other males did not use a condom the last time they had sexual intercourse. 20% of male students who had sexual contact with other males drank alcohol or used drugs before their most recent sexual encounter. Teens should have appropriate and accurate information about sexual health, including STI and HIV prevention. If they choose to have sex, they should know how to protect themselves. Inconsistent condom use extends to older men who have sex with men (MSM). A 2015 CDC study, “Condom Effectiveness for HIV Prevention by Consistency of Use Among Men Who Have Sex with Men in the United States,” reported
that the estimated effectiveness of condom use for gay men with HIV-positive partners is 70%, but only for those who reported “always” using condoms. However, among the thousands of men in the study, only 16.4% reported “always” using condoms with all sexual partners over the year or more the study lasted. Inconsistent condom use with HIV-positive partners offered “minimal or no protection” from HIV. Teens and adults seeking a safe, nonjudgmental space to discuss safe sex and access condoms at no-cost, can reach out to Care Resource’s Health Promotion Services Department. The health center’s navigators can suggest proper condom use in conjunction with other biomedical HIV prevention options, including PrEP. Care Resource encourages the community to reflect on their sexual health habits, and consider how they can be more mindful. Reach out to a loved one who is at higher risk of contracting STIs, including HIV. Let them know you are talking to them because you care. Reach out to a young person who could use guidance and support, and tell them it’s okay to talk about sex, especially if they’re sexually active. Health interventions can start in our relationships. Prevention is our duty; we do not have to wait to receive an unfavorable diagnosis to make healthier decisions.

he Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau (GFLCVB) has started a refreshing and prideful rebranding: Visit Lauderdale, Everyone Under the Sun. The new brand rollout, including a new logo, is currently taking place. Visit Lauderdale is thrilled to launch this new brand which really aligns with their beautiful community and destination. Richard Gray, Senior Vice President of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion at Visit Lauderdale, is extremely proud of their new tagline, Everyone Under the Sun, complementing, “Regardless of gender, gender expression, body size, race, age, disability, or religious beliefs, Greater Fort Lauderdale welcomes everyone. We have evolved from just a sunny beach place to a diverse and cosmopolitan destination. ‘Hello Sunny’ was the brand for many years, but ‘Visit Lauderdale’ needed a new brand to better reflect where we are today.” When Visit Lauderdale says ‘Everyone Under the Sun,’ they mean it. “The historic campaign includes trans, drag, lesbian, gay, non-binary, disabled, straight, and minorities in a very non-resort way,” Gray explained. “As part of this campaign, I added black and brown to the pride colors to show Greater Fort Lauderdale’s commitment and belief in black and brown people. This is the first DMO (destination marketing organization) to add these colors to its [pride] flag.” To learn more about Visit Lauderdale’s places to stay, things to do, and planning your trip to the beaches and beyond, follow them @VisitLauderdale on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Youtube, and visit their website at Sunny.org.
Taking Steps of Change Continuing the Journey By Steven O. Evans, PhD

ast month, I started working with Dr. Cabrera at Genesis Health Institute, here in Wilton Manors, FL. My journey has included natural supplements, dietary changes, exercise, and hormone balancing.
we can take chances on opportunities on how to live our best lives possible.
Thus far, I have seen a dramatic difference in my health. I am enjoying more energy and a better outlook on life. It’s only been a month, but I can see and feel positive changes.
What was 2020 like for you? What did you learn from that year? For me, it was a time of reflection. I’m wanting to make 2021 a year of renewal and changes. The steps I’ve been given by my friends at Genesis Health Institute are part of my journey to a new me, as I am excited for what’s to come.

Sunshine Cathedral’s Food Sharing Ministry By Denny Patterson
Sunshine Cathedral has been a bright spot within the South Florida community for several years, and it continues to get better thanks to Rev. Dr. Anne Atwell and their entire staff. As the Minister of Connections, Atwell works with congregants to ensure they have the resources they need and works with community organizations to connect them with congregants. She is also head of the Cathedral’s Food Sharing Ministry. “The Food Sharing Ministry began in 2016 with our Brown Bag Lunch Program,” Atwell said. “We create lunch bags which are distributed to various organizations and locations around our community. We are intentional in our outreach, specifically connecting with those in the LGBTQ+ community, as well as those who are most vulnerable and food insecure.” The Cathedral’s Food Sharing Outreach expanded in 2019 by beginning its food pantry. “It was a dream to expand beyond the Lunch Program and to offer grocery bags, also with a specific focus on the LGBTQ+ community,” Atwell said. “We will serve everyone and we want those who are part of the LGBTQ+ community to feel very comfortable here. Our food pantry is very unique in that we offer grocery staples, bread, snacks, and fresh produce with no questions or judgment. You do not have to ‘qualify’ for food at Sunshine Cathedral. If you are hungry and need food, we will do everything we can to help.” For more information, visit SunshineCathedral.org. If someone has a specific question or would like to make an appointment, contact Atwell directly at (954) 462-2004 ext. 208, or email her at Anne@SunshineCathedral.org. ou may ask “What does this monthly article on spirituality have to do with spring cleaning?” The Christian season of Lent, which we just traveled, is a time of reflection and renewal. In other words, spring cleaning! In our spiritual journey, we often should take time to stop and assess our relationship with our Higher Power. Spiritual spring cleaning may include: • • • • •
Can we see or are we blind to the need of love for ourselves, our neighbors, and our Higher Power? What do we need to overcome in order to see more clearly in our faith journey? Are our spiritual batteries in need of a boost? What do we need to dispose of or add to our lives in order to grow in our faith and blossom? Remember our mortality; it is from dust we come and to dust we will return.
After the 40 days of Lent, and this time of reflection and renewal, we celebrate Easter. It’s a time of celebration and joy. Due to the pandemic, a lot of change has occurred in our world in the last year. The time of Lent and Easter has left us with a lot of questions. How will we build together a “new normal” where love is at the center of all we do? May our lives make a difference as we move forward. Let us praise our Higher Power and be grateful!

here must be occasional times of prayer over extended periods when we separate ourselves from the affairs of daily living. God must have a chance of speaking to us in the quietness of our hearts. Therefore … We, the family of the Parish of Sts. Francis & Clare, are a Catholic, Christian community that reaches to all God’s people by providing a living witness to all called from various and diverse backgrounds – all are welcome
to the table of Jesus. As followers of Francis, we are called to celebrate the diversity and uniqueness of every person as God’s gift to us. In the spirit of Franciscan joy, we go forth to proclaim the Good News, using words if necessary. We want to welcome the entire community to enjoy the warmth and love of our parish by participating in the sacramental life of the Church, especially those who have been turned away by others. Spring Into Action By Eric Noel Roman
A
s winter comes to a close and spring bounces into fruition, this is a perfect time to renew yourself. Even though in South Florida we really don’t experience the dreariness of snowy weather, we do experience many of the same situations that snow days bring upon the world. As the sun creeps from behind the thick winter clouds, rain begins to fall regularly and the world returns to a lively state. During this time of the year, the rain washes away the collected grime from the previous season. Also, life begins to flourish outdoors. Bugs, birds, and all types of wildlife come out from hiding to socialize and play. The world appears to spring into life and have a fresh start after a solemn period. I like to take an example from nature. Regularly, I try to refresh, renew, and rejuvenate my life. During these days, it is a great time to wash away the negatives and refresh your life. Wash away anything that has held you down. Renew your goals so that you reach new heights in the coming future. Rejuvenate yourself by going out and bringing life back into your regiment. This is the time of the year when you can wrap up last year’s endeavors and refresh your spirit to spring into action any new accomplishments. Eric Noel Roman DJ, obstacle racer, motivational writer from North Miami Beach, living life one day at a time, and making a difference one person at a time.

Alibi began operating and staffing all the food and beverage outlets at AxelBeach Hotel in March 2021. Chasing Dreams Together By On & Dave Mekahel Cederberg
D
reams make the world go round. Literally. Without them, life is bleak and stagnant. We all have dreams. For some of us it’s a few, and others it’s a list that never ends. The amount of time we, as humans, spend in a dream-like-state with our consciousness suspended somewhere between dreaming and reality is quite vast. While food creates physical energy, dreams fuel the soul. They feed our desires by helping to push us towards progress and pleasurable feelings of accomplishment. If both partners truly understand and value the concept of a dream, with good communication, just like anything, boundaries can be set and compromises be made. Okay, so the message has been relayed, but now what? Well, for starters, begin your mental stretching. Approaching something as grand and complex as conquering a dream will require a good bit of flexibility. Not just as it pertains to your approach, but also how you envision it in your mind versus the way it actually plays out in reality. Also, dreams evolve and can transform over time, especially as you live life and allow your experiences to guide you. Malleability within dreams is like lube. Use it as needed, even in copious amounts at times, as it will render the most satisfying experience. The last

thing you want is to give up on something just because you are too caught up in what you think it should be rather than what it is. Another thing to consider is that within a partnership, sometimes the most fulfilling dreams are the ones that are shared. And not just as it pertains to “partner goals,” like a family, a house, or marriage. It’s also the way that one person’s dream can be eventually picked up by the other over time. In our relationship, On is the rigid dreamer, as to where Dave considers things from a more wavering perspective. Within the balance that we continuously try to achieve, On’s personal dreams have also become Dave’s, as Dave takes an active role in the process toward helping On to realize his. This has also brought about an abundance of opportunity for On to open Dave up to realms of life via his dream that Dave never experienced. Here enters new dreams for Dave both individually and aligned with On’s. In this scenario, we both win. All in all, yes, the process seems complex, but trust us, the concept is simple. Strike the balance, stay open to new things, set a boundary or five, and let the journey resume! In the end you will find that the best, most meaningful dreams in life are shared.
Is Leather Calling? How Do We Answer?
D
By Cory David, Mr. Eagle Wilton Manors 2020/2021
Your style is yours. There are no laws in leather style, but there are traditions. I personally love Old Guard style traditions, Tom of Finland, military royal gear, a sexy biker with a little English Hunter/Jumper. Now that’s my personal perfect look, a mixed style of looks. I don’t believe in stereotypes or square boxes. My walls all fell down years ago. So now what? Make it yours! Start with a modest piece to explore and feel out your leather intrigue. A leather vest is a must investment. As leather apparel goes, a vest is a modest cost with several levels of versatility making it a great piece to start with. At its most basic, it goes well with just jeans and t-shirt, or no shirt, but also compliments a regular or a leather shirt, as well as leather pants, chaps, or leather shorts. If your love for leather is present, no matter how you identify, the vest may also be the most important piece in your wardrobe when “vested” in your leather self. It is known to showcase title patches including clubs, organizations, groups, biker emblems, community pins, and more. It can express your personal position in the leather community and showcase your pride when attending events. Collect vest pins and share your community efforts of your cause, love, and pride. Leather items can have multiple uses with just a few accessories, such as leather suspenders always have a look for you. I LOVE mine, which transforms into a backpack harness. For bar nights, a harness is also a good start. If you decide to take your shirt off dancing, a harness is a good way to accessorize yourself. A must is a pair of black leather biker boots, a classic belt, and a wallet chain. These are a staple and 90 | OutClique.com

always go well with any other leather pieces. When exploring, bring someone that has some knowledge to help you, ask to speak to a leather adviser, or consult your local leather craftsman. Now, as I plan for the International Mr. Leather (IML) Title run, our local, talented craftsman Lanz Adams truly knows my vision. He is here to make my leather mine and, just as passionately, to make your leather YOURS! His craft makes you feel leather the way leather should. If you pick the right fit, it makes you feel sexy and confident with your amazing leather armor of strength. Remember, there is no right, no wrong, there is just yes-it-does, and it-reallydoes! rom marginalization to marriage, the closet to living life out and proud, the history of the LGBTQ+ community has been marked with heartbreaking violence to soul-restoring triumph. The keepers of that history have long been in Fort Lauderdale at the Stonewall National Museum & Archives (SNMA), and they are asking you to join them. Their membership drive is underway, and Executive Director Hunter O’Hanian told OutClique that it’s not just about raising money, it’s about being part of the community. “In its 50 years, Stonewall has been a community resource. Membership has always been part of who we are. We have had thousands of people who have stepped forward to say they support the need to preserve and present our heritage. That’s what membership says. It says: this is something important that I support, not just for me but for those who were before and also who are yet to find their voice.” With more than six million pages of documents and records, SNMA holds critical pieces of our story, a story that often isn’t told to much of the world. To tell that story, they hold exhibits year round. In addition to the physical displays at the museum (they reopened in July 2020), many of the exhibits are available online, and they just opened two shows. “First, we
have Off Our Backs, a look at early lesbian publications from 1950 to 2000. We also have The Saint, a look at the iconic disco in NYC in the 1980s. Both exhibitions have objects and ideas found in Stonewall’s archives.” Hunter says the pandemic created a lot of challenges, but also provided an opportunity to find new fans. “We’ve challenged ourselves on every front and found new ways to tell cultural truths. We have launched a virtual programming series which has found a national audience. We have smart, professional exhibitions based on LGBTQ+ history. We have launched a queer studies journal. We have received funding from major national foundations and begun the digitization of our archives which can now reach an international audience of scholars, writers, and artists. We have retooled our vision and plan for the future.” Hunter has been with SNMA for a year and a half, and says the history he learns makes it all worthwhile. “I like the stories I hear,” and he wants our community to join him. “While we are a small and mighty non-profit, we are blessed to have the responsibility of accurately preserving history for future generations. Thankfully many people understand our charge and actively want to be members.”

Haiti Sends Awareness Over Airwaves Nationwide By Julie Pascault
A
HF Haiti has commemorated International Condom Day (ICD) in conjunction with a private gay pride celebration for the past two years. But, for 2021, the team changed things up and put condom advocacy in the spotlight by joining a national television talk show, which also shed light on the stigma and discrimination often exhibited against the LGBT+ community. Participants included public health professionals, including AHF healthcare providers, activists, and partners. Key topics discussed were the importance of condom use, access, and affordability, as well as practicing tolerance and ensuring equal rights for the Haitian LGBT+ community, particularly regarding healthcare and employment. “The LGBT+ community, which is tremendously discriminated against in Haiti, is entitled to respect and tolerance from everyone,” said AHF Haiti Country Program Manager Karine Duverger. “Due to this stigma and discrimination, particularly among men who have sex with men – which have an HIV prevalence rate as high as 12.9% – it’s difficult to reach them to provide access to proper care.
AHF Haiti Country Program Manager Karine Duverger
Mediums like this television broadcast help us educate the masses and break down these critical barriers to equality.” The innovative project was broadcast nationwide and reached an estimated 30,000 people. “We urge the Haitian government to strengthen its health policy to allow the National AIDS Program to enhance collaboration with partners working to control the HIV epidemic in Haiti,” added AHF Haiti Marketing Coordinator Mikson Antoine. “It’s vital that condoms be made available free of charge to everyone who needs them, regardless of their sexual orientation, religion, or social status – and particularly to those who’re less fortunate.”

Poverello Continues to Help Those In Need
W
By Denny Patterson
hen we last spoke with Poverello’s CEO Tom Pietrogallo in May 2020, he spoke about the nonprofit organization’s good work, how it has positively impacted millions of people, and how he planned to face COVID-19 head-on. Millions of small businesses and nonprofits across the country have been forced to shut down, but thanks to Pietrogallo’s strong leadership, Poverello continues to march forward. We caught up with Pietrogallo for an update.
Denny Patterson: How has Poverello been
managing during these difficult times and navigating through the pandemic?
TP
This pandemic really showed the weakness of our funding mechanism. We rely on retail to fill in the gaps of what we do for people, and when retail tanked, that meant a lot of our income tanked. It really made us look at what we are doing with pricing our services and trying to make sure that funders are adequately paying. What we do is high quality, and it is a great product. We sometimes do not value it enough to price it the way we should. Instead, we have been pricing it whatever they will give us and then we have been filling the gaps with
what we make from the thrift store. When money does not come into the thrift store, it messes up the relief effort right in the middle of the time when people need it the most. Thankfully, donations are way up for us this year. People who know what we do have really stepped up and donated. Also, the PPP program has been beneficial to us. It allowed us to have three months of salaries paid and hazard benefits. We tried to beef up the benefits and show our staff how much we appreciated them working so hard during this pandemic. They have worked so hard to get everything done. We have definitely improved our services. Before, people would always come to us. Now, 20-40 per day are getting deliveries from us. They can either come in and receive food, or we deliver.
DP TP
What safety protocols have been implemented?
The staff have all agreed to get tested on a regular basis. We clean regularly and do a professional spray every week to the whole facility, including the vehicles. We ask everyone to wear a mask, we provide masks to our customers who do not have them, and we ask people to observe social distancing.

ward-winning character actor Jonah Blechman celebrates the release of four diverse yet dynamic projects over the first half of 2021, including the SXSW World Premiere competition film Swan Song, the release of the Director’s Cut of his iconic queer cult comedy classic Another Gay Movie, the new dark comedy series Pet Peeves, and a turn in the horror comedy film Claw. To kick the year off, Blechman and iconic director Todd Stephens (Edge of Seventeen) have teamed up once more for the upcoming SXSW feature Swan Song. Blechman shared the screen alongside Udo Kier and Jennifer Coolidge when the film held its world premiere on March 16, 2021. “I’m thrilled to return to SXSW this year, and with Todd’s wonderful Swan Song,” said Blechman. “Working with Udo and Jennifer on what is surely Udo’s greatest role was a total pleasure and true honor.” Blechman and Stephens will also see the re-release of their first collaboration, the 112 | OutClique.com
breakout queer comedy Another Gay Movie, in celebration of the film’s 15th anniversary. Released from Breaking Glass Pictures on March 30, 2021, the cult comedy classic is sure to shock new audiences with this special Director’s Cut, complete with never-before-seen footage, certain to please diehard fans. “Another Gay Movie was one of my most outrageous performances in what I like to call my queer protest film,” said Blechman. “I’m forever proud of the boundaries we broke that still today haven’t been topped in the queer genre!” On the small screen, Blechman takes the lead in the upcoming dark comedy TV series Pet Peeves, starring as Milton, a newly paroled pet psychic who is determined to restart his career, only to discover the past won’t stay buried for long. With neurotic pet parents to furry fourlegged friends, the series premieres on global queer TV network Revry for National Pet Day, April 11, 2021. “I fell in love with playing Milton,” shares Blechman. “The concept of going intimately into the lives of people and their pets
totally titillated my funny bone and was equally fascinating to explore. Oh, what our animals could tell about us!”
character or in storytelling, then I’m powerlessly compelled to through my real life and through my own experience.”
Finally, to cap off the first half of 2021, Blechman will appear alongside a deadly prehistoric terror in the dinosaur horror feature Claw. Directed by Gerald Rascionat (Open Water 3: Cage Dive), Claw will see a limited theatrical and home entertainment release this summer from ITN Studios. Blechman said, “Claw is a horror hybrid comedy with a dinosaur. What more can I say – absurd and hysterical!”
This is true of Blechman, as his curiosities have led him to successfully dive deep into alternate life paths including being an ABT ballet dancer (trained by Baryshinkov), an Orthodox Jew, a fashion designer, a publicist, and a TV network entrepreneur - all facets culminating into a truly creative life. Blechman has just added directing to his repertoire, having directed the television show QueerX LIVE! featuring Jennifer Lopez and President Joe Biden on National Coming Out Day. As an advocate, Blechman continues to champion the queer community through his partnerhship with the global queer TV network, Revry.
In a career spanning over three decades, Blechman’s first role of note had him breaking boundaries by kissing Leonardo DiCaprio in the critically acclaimed This Boy’s Life alongside Robert DeNiro and Ellen Barkin. Since then, he has appeared in over 70 roles in film and television, many of which have garnered awards and nominations at The Spirit Awards, Sundance, Tribeca, SXSW, Outfest, Frameline, and a Best Actor Award at the Los Angeles Independent Film Festival. Blechman has acted opposite such industry greats as Mickey Rourke, Tobey Maguire, James Garner, Ann Margret, Nick Offerman, and even RuPaul. Whether it’s comedy or drama, Blechman stands out with performances that ignites critics and moves audiences.
Once the pandemic subsides, Blechman is set to star in two feature films in Prague with awardwinning director Wiktor Grodecki (Mandragora), and is preparing to star in and direct his opus feature Ball Room.
Also a longtime theater performer, Blechman was the youngest Equity lead in the tour de force that is Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Facile with different disciplines, he learned sign language to perform in the groundbreaking Deaf West production of Pippin at L.A.’s renown Mark Taper Forum. That work, and his shepherding the arts for the disability community, gave him the honor of speaking in front of our nation’s Presidential Committee for People with Intellectual Disabilities. “My love of acting became rooted in its innate permission to be out of control in a controlled environment”, says Blechman. “That freedom and safety satiates this inherent, passionate curiosity I have to experience and express humanity. The Justin Flippen Memorial Scholarship at Our Fund Foundation Scholarship Awarded to Florida Atlantic Student on Anniversary of Flippen’s Untimely Passing
W
hen Justin Flippen, the beloved late mayor of Wilton Manors, died unexpectedly from a brain aneurysm last year, Our Fund Foundation swiftly launched the Justin Flippen Memorial Scholarship Fund to honor his enduring legacy.
To pay a fitting tribute and offer respects on the one-year anniversary of Flippen’s untimely passing on February 25, 2020, at the age of only 41, Our Fund Foundation will award the inaugural scholarship to Emily Miranda, a Political Science major at Florida Atlantic University. As the first recipient to receive the Justin Flippen Memorial Scholarship, Miranda has a proven record of community service and political activism combined with a passion for social justice. “Our Fund Foundation is honored to administer the Justin Flippen Memorial Fund which will help prepare future generations of leaders to follow in the footsteps of Justin ’s thoughtful and passionate public service,” said David Jobin, president and CEO of Our Fund Foundation. As Florida Atlantic University’s first openly gay Student President, Flippen went on to become Wilton Manors’ Mayor. His life and career in public service were guided by Thomas Jefferson’s foundational principle, “Governments are the servants, not the masters, of the people.” “Ignorance serves as the fuel for gaps in social justice and equity, and the battle against it is lifelong,” said Miranda. “It is my honor to receive this scholarship in the name of Justin Flippen as it allows me to take a step further in learning
about, confronting, and promoting equality and justice.” Scholarships from the Justin Flippen Memorial Scholarship Fund will be awarded annually and in perpetuity in increments $1,000. Our Fund Foundation will oversee the endowment which was created to provide financial support to Florida students who are aspiring to enter public service and pursuing a degree in political science or a related field. Preference will be given to students exhibiting interest in promoting LGBTQ+ equality. Flippen’s parents remarked, “The recipient impresses me as she is an honors student in a similar place as Justin was at that time in his life. Justin would feel good about her determination, particularly as a first-generation student,” said Stephanie Flippen Chandler. With Jim Flippen recalling, “Justin always said a school is four walls with a roof and the future inside.” Our Fund Foundation intends on continuing to raise monies for the Justin Flippen Memorial Scholarship Fund so the non-profit can increase and expand the number of future scholarships. For more information or to make a donation, visit www.Our-Fund.org/Justin_Memorial.

of the World AIDS Museum and Educational Center. “This exhibition has deep meaning as we look back to the origins of the AIDS epidemic and to where we are today; and how this, in some ways, mirrors the COVID-19 experience.” The Through the White Door photography project by Pool spans over two decades following a remarkable group of people who faced the HIV/ AIDS crisis head-on and saved a generation of children. The project culminated with an oversized hardcover book with 212 pages of his photography. Text for the book was written by Jessica Johns Pool, his spouse, who is a writer specializing in health care. Together, Through the White Door is their way of sharing the stories of the extraordinary and inspirational people they have met along the way. Welcome Back to Our Wilton Theaters By Chris Caputo, Wilton Manors City Commissioner
I
am honored to serve as one of Wilton Manors’ City Commissioners for many reasons. As a big supporter of arts and culture in our community, our local theater community is a real point of pride for me. Wilton Manors is honored to have two fully operational gay theaters side by side. It’s truly an amazing thing. As vaccines pave the way for a safe return to theater, I want to encourage residents and visitors to support these local theaters that make Wilton Manors great. Island City Stage and the Foundry (home to POW!, Plays of Wilton) are located right next door to one another on Dixie Highway near The Pride Center at Equality Park. During the pandemic, both theaters pivoted and innovated to stay relevant. Island City Stage and Plays of Wilton both offered online streaming performances as well as limited capacity, socially distanced, and mask-required seating. While this helped them keep the doors open, it was undoubtedly an incredibly difficult year for both organizations and that is why they need our support now more than ever. Island City Stage’s next on stage showings are The Niceties (running April 2–18, 2021), followed by Bright Colors and Bold Patterns (running June 4–13, 2021). Both shows also have virtual showings running April 16–25, 2021, and June 11–21, 2021, respectfully. You can get your tickets to watch them live, in person (with COVID-19 safety procedures in place) or streaming online by visiting IslandCityStage. org. Plays of Wilton at the Foundry will be releasing their upcoming performances, which will be opening soon, at PlaysOfWilton.com. I hope you’ll join me in supporting our theater community. It’s one of the many things that makes Wilton Manors great.

prestigious concert pianist who has performed with orchestras, recitals, and festivals worldwide, Svetlana Smolina is returning to the South Florida Symphony Orchestra to perform Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No. 1 for its virtual Masterworks VI series scheduled for April 24, 2021, at 8:00PM. OutClique had the opportunity to chat more with Smolina about this engagement, as well as how she has been managing these unprecedented times of the COVID-19 pandemic. You can purchase your $20 Household Virtual Pass with promo code OUTCLIQUE6 (savings of $25) to watch Svetlana Smolina and the South Florida Symphony Orchestra perform Masterworks VI: Shostakovich | Tchaikovsky at www.SouthFloridaSymphony.org.
Denny Patterson: Hi, Svetlana! Thank you for taking some time to chat with me again. How does it feel to return to the South Florida Symphony Orchestra?
Svetlana Smolina: It is always special for me to come back. It is a very common trend for orchestras to have a fabulous artist for one year, but try another for the next season. When you get invited so many times, it means a lot. I love the South Florida Symphony Orchestra so much, and they are such a special organization. I have had so many cancellations within the past year because of COVID-19, so the fact they were able to keep this concert even without an audience and stayed true to the music, I am very grateful. I saw my friends and we have some plans to do some concerts in the summer and the following February. So, I already have at least two invitations to come back after this.

This was a very innovative idea from Sebrina [Maestra Sebrina Alfonso, SFSO Music Director]. Audiences will see that this concerto is kind of a double concerto. It is not just piano, but there is a wonderful trumpet soloist from Florida, Kevin Karabell. The [Shostakovich Piano] concerto was originally intended as a trumpet concerto, but the piano came in later. We also have two soloists on stage. This is a very exciting orchestration.

How have you been managing the days of the pandemic?
It has been hard because most of my scheduled performances have vanished. Nothing is really going on right now, and most of my bookings have been moved to 2022. They were first postponed until fall, maybe summer, but they were eventually canceled because of quarantines and lockdowns. So, it has been very hard psychologically, but I tried to stay afloat and take on as many virtual performances as I could and take the time to learn new programs and pieces. I learned a lot of new music, as well as a couple new concertos. I also expanded my solo repertoire and have been doing pre-recorded performances.

Are there any upcoming projects we should keep an eye out for?
I do have plans to perform in the summer, but I do not want to say too much at this time. I also have concerts in China and Asia that I hope will happen by the end of April [2021].
