WHAT MAKES US CLIQUE

MEGAN SCUTTI

Photo by Andy Armano | www.AndyArmano.com

By Andy Armano | www.AndyArmano.com

This series focuses on individuals who give to our community and make a positive impact on the lives of others. Often it is through our personal adversities that we discover who we are and transform the challenges into strength. OutClique.com | 07

M

egan Scutti is the Community and Inclusion Manager at the Museum of Discovery and Science (MODS). She organizes events to engage the LGBTQ+ community and our allies and works to create an inclusive space for staff. I recently sat down with Megan to discuss her important program and how her life experiences illuminate her work. Andy Armano: Tell me a little bit about your upbringing. Megan Scutti: I grew up in Fort Lauderdale, probably 20 minutes from here. I was raised Catholic. My mother and father are still together. I was homeschooled and I went to Florida Atlantic University and majored in Psychology.

AA MS

How did you come to be dedicating your career to inclusivity?

AA MS

So this drive to help others has always been in you?

AA MS

Have your personal experiences helped you in your daily work?

Yeah, it's always been there. My mom tells a story about when I was about four years old. We were at the playground and I saw a little boy picking on a little girl, and I got so mad I went over there and pushed him. I'm not advocating anyone getting pushed, but my Mom always says, “You were always sticking up for the underdog.

Like it is for many people, I had many challenges coming out. It took me a while to come to terms with my own identity because of bi-erasure and bi-phobia, even in the community. When I started to disclose, I had friends who were not understanding. When

I always knew that I wanted to work with the LGBTQ+ population. I identify as queer or bisexual. I went through my own hardships, and I don't want anyone to feel that way.

I disclosed to my immediate family, there was pushback. I had some family that I didn't even come out to at all. For a time, I had a girlfriend and I had to hide that. But my parents got over it, and then I was able to have my girlfriend over, and we'd have dinner nights and stuff. I'm really fortunate with my family. My mother has even said things to me, like, “I just want you to be happy, whoever you're with. As long as that person is healthy, and good for you, and you're good for them, that's all that we care about.” So, I was able to grow through these experiences. I’m a stronger person now, and I hope that shows in my work. I want to help other individuals that are struggling to love themselves and accept themselves and to know that they are valued; they are important and celebrated.

tickets you see that sign right there.

AA MS

Can you give me a highlight of your work on the inclusivity program?

It was so special to see all types of families enjoying our Pride Day program. What was wonderful to experience was the sheer authenticity from everybody here at the museum. This last Pride Day the energy was incredible. The staff came in extra early to help set up; everyone was just so supportive. We had shirts made for the staff. It was optional for them, and every single one of the staff wore those shirts because they wanted to. I could really tell that people were genuinely excited about it and proud of it.

AA

Tell me about your career path. How did you end up working to promote inclusivity at the MODS?

MS

In college, I was a peer mentor for LGBTQ+ students under a program in the psychology department. After college, I worked as a mental health care caseworker before I came to the museum to run our Transitional Independent Living Program, which provides internships and support to young people aging out of foster care. When the inclusivity initiative came about at MODS, I interviewed for it and got it. Tell me a little about the MODS inclusivity program.

Photo by Andy Armano | www.AndyArmano.com

AA MS

The museum has a strong history of community involvement. Since Joe Cox, our president and CEO has come on, he has really led us in being even more involved with the community. For inclusivity, we have our Museum on Wheels science program, and we go to different LGBTQ+ organizations in the community to bring our science programs to them. We looked over the museum’s handbook and policies. And we also have decals of our rainbow arches outside on the box office, so when you come here and you're getting your OutClique.com | 09

HOW TO PREPARE FINANCIALLY FOR A LONGER LIFE By Linda Buccilli, Northwestern Mutual

If you ask people, many of them will tell you that they are not afraid of dying so much as they may be afraid of outliving your resources. No one looks forward to the time when you can no longer care for yourself. When that time comes, your ability to live as good a life as physically possible will depend on what preparations you make today. Exercise, eat right, stay mentally fit and financially prepared. Long-term care can be expensive and costs can quickly impact a person’s financial security. People are living longer, which increases the odds of developing a chronic illness that could require ongoing care. If the day comes that you are unable to do basic things, such as dressing yourself, getting in and out of bed, eating a meal or going to the bathroom alone, you will need to be prepared for the costs of paying professional caregivers for the help you need. As health care costs escalate, an increasing number of people are protecting themselves by planning for long-term care. Though Medicare covers skilled care for acute conditions such as heart attacks and broken bones, in general, it does not cover the custodial care required for chronic medical conditions.

When making your plans for a secure retirement, it’s also important to consider long-term care needs as a way of helping to protect your assets so they aren’t exhausted by possible extendedcare costs. By planning ahead, you can help maintain your independence and help ensure you have financial security to live your life your way. There are quite a few factors to consider when planning for long-term care. For this reason, it’s important to work with a financial professional who understands your needs, and who can design a plan that will meet those needs at a cost you can afford. Specifically, look for a financial professional who is supported by a well-established company with a solid history of strength and stability. A company that is well-positioned to deliver long-term value and will be there when you need it most. The right long-term care plan can provide you with options on how you receive the care you need and where. It gives you choices about how your final years are lived and where. And maybe, with such a plan can help reduce the fear of outliving your resources.

THE DYNAMIC DUO OF CINDY & RISA By Steven O. Evans, PhD

B

uying a home is one of the most important decisions of a person’s lifetime. Not only is it the place you will call home, but also it is one of the most important financial decisions that one will make. Finding the right realtor is key to choosing the place you will lay your head at night. I talked with Cindy & Risa Goffin, also known as the Goffin Team, about the home buying and home selling process and their expertise. Steven O. Evans, PhD: What things do you do to help get property sold quickly? Cindy & Risa: We work hard to make each property presentable for the buyer. Staging homes is vital. We go the extra mile with each client’s property to make sure the home is presentable. We utilize professional photography. This is key for good presentation for those buyers shopping online. When we list a house, the listing goes on more than 50 different websites. We make brochures on each home, so each buyer has something tangible to refer to from their visit. We use hard stock paper and include a floor plan, special features of the home, as well as upgrades. Virtual tours are also part of our marketing plan to get potential buyers to see the home before stepping onto the property. We can also utilize drone photography for certain properties. These photos give great aerial shots of the home and the surrounding areas. We assist with pricing to sell. Getting the right price for both the buyer and seller is important to closing the deal. We get quotes up front in anticipation of questions from potential buyers: from painting contractors or a pool company if one does not exist. We also created our own curb to fence form. This is a critical analysis of the entire property and unique only to the Goffin Team. We take a great deal of time to see all of the pieces and parts of the property that need to be addressed to ensure the property is ready to be shown. We anticipate any questions potential buyers could have

ahead of time and have estimates ready to go.

SOE C&R

Why should someone choose you?

SOE

What sets you apart?

First, we are honest people. We are upfront with all of our clients about the properties and any part of the buying and selling process. Second, we want people to feel comfortable with us. We build relationships with our clients. Third, we listen to our clients. We treat our clients as if they are part of our family. We love seeing people move along the property buying process and taking the next step in their lives to sell their property or acquire a home.

Cindy: I’ve been working in real estate for over 20 years and have always been an advocate of the LGBTQ community. My experience, knowledge, follow through, and personal touch will make your home buying or selling process an amazing experience. Risa: As a member of the LGBTQ community, I work with several organizations in Palm Beach and the South Florida area. I also bring expertise with technology and social media. I am working with OutClique magazine to start our Q-Connect mixers here in Palm Beach and more outreach to the LGBTQ community.

C&R

With the Goffin Team, you get the expertise of two people with a blend of unique, but complementary skill sets. We walk you through the entire process. For the seller, we take you through the listing, marketing, showing, offer/acceptance, inspections, financing, and closing steps. And for the buyer, we walk you through qualifying, finding the home of your dreams, inspections, financial paperwork, and the final closing. We love what we do, but most of all, we love the clients and friends that we make along the way.

2019 TRIM NOTICES

T

he Broward County Property Appraiser’s Office mails the TRIM (proposed tax) Notices in mid-August each year. The proposed property tax notice will show your 2019 property assessment, exemptions, and the proposed taxes along with dates and times for the various taxing authorities’ public budget hearings. The TRIM Notice is your opportunity to review your property assessment and ensure you are receiving all the tax-saving exemptions you are entitled to. The absolute deadline to apply for any 2019 exemption or to appeal your property assessment is September 18, 2019. Many property owners ignore their TRIM Notice until it is too late to appeal an assessment, question the proposed tax rates, or file for exemptions. If you wait until you receive your tax bill in November to inquire about your property assessment, you will lose your right to appeal. The first thing to know is your taxes are calculated using this formula: TAXABLE VALUE x TAX MILLAGE RATES + SPECIAL ASSESSMENTS = TAX BILL The Property Appraiser determines the market value and assessed/Save Our Homes (SOH) value of your property. If you want to question your proposed tax rates, non-ad valorem fees, special assessments, or services, you should contact the elected officials who serve on

these taxing authorities and attend the public hearings in September 2019. Why Are My Property Taxes Higher than the Prior Owner’s Last Year? Florida law requires property be reassessed at market value as of January 1 the year following a change in ownership and/or the year the property receives/loses the Homestead Exemption. After this reset in value occurs, the property will be protected by an assessment cap starting the following year. For Homesteaded property, the assessed/ SOH value can increase by no more than 3% above last year’s assessed/SOH value (or the consumer price index, whichever is less), regardless of the increase in just value. For tax year 2019, the assessment increase is capped at 1.9% for all Homesteaded properties. For non-Homesteaded property, the assessed value can increase by no more than 10% above last year’s assessed value. The 10% cap does not apply to the school board taxes. SHINGLES

EFFECTIVE RELIEF FOR ACUTE OUTBREAKS By Dr. David Webb

S

hingles is caused by an infection of the nerves with one of the herpes viruses, herpes zoster. This is the same virus that causes chicken pox, and in fact, you can only get shingles if you have previously had chicken pox. It is important to quickly diagnose and treat shingles, since untreated, the outbreak can be extensive and extremely painful. One of the tell-tale signs of shingles is that the rash and blisters are, with very few exceptions, isolated to only one side of the body, not crossing the midline. The first symptoms are pain in the skin and muscles. In this initial stage there is no rash or blisters, and this stage can last for several days. After this initial stage, the painful area breaks out with rash and small, fluid-filled, painful blisters. Even with conventional pharmaceutical treatment, this stage can last for several weeks. When the rash and blisters resolve, it simply means the virus has become dormant again. Currently there are no conventional treatments that can completely eliminate herpes zoster from the body. The conventional approach to treating shingles involves the use of antiviral pharmaceutical drugs, such as Acyclovir. Antiviral medicines shorten the course of the outbreak, shortening the time until the virus again becomes dormant, but for many this still means weeks of excruciating pain. In San Francisco, in the 1920s, a group of MDs lead by Dr. Albert Abrams, did pioneering research into the use of specific

electromagnetic frequencies to heal various diseases. Dr. Abrams discovered a frequency pair useful in the treatment of infections. As it turns out, current use of this frequency pair has shown that it is very specific to the herpes class of viruses, including herpes zoster, the virus that causes shingles. The modern treatment that evolved from this discovery is called Frequency Specific Microcurrent (FSM). It is a completely painless and noninvasive treatment that has quickly become the most effective treatment available to date for resolving the pain, rash and blisters associated with shingles. In the "Non-Pharmacologic Treatment of Shingles" published in Practical Pain Management in 2010, Dr. Carolyn McMakin, the creator of modern FSM, has observed that the widespread use of her FSM shingles protocol has resulted in a very predictable treatment outcome. If treatment begins in the initial stage, before any rash or blisters are seen, a single two hour treatment will cause the virus to immediately go dormant again, ending the acute outbreak. If treatment begins after the rash and blisters have appeared, following a single two hour treatment the pain usually goes away completely within 20 minutes and the blisters dry up and heal in about 48 hours. Further treatments are usually not needed. For further information on FSM, or to read the entire paper on the FSM treatment of shingles and find an FSM practitioner near you, visit www.FrequencySpecific.com.

LONG-TERM EFFECTS OF SPORTS INJURIES

J

ust when the days of pushing our bodies are long gone, that’s when the past may catch up with us. There have been numerous studies surrounding the long-term effect of sports injuries, but you don’t need scientific data to show you that what you’re feeling probably didn’t happen overnight — wear and tear often compounds the injury. If you have experienced any type of sports injury, you owe it to your present and future body to be extra vigilant about some warning signs. Here are six common injuries and the effects that can occur years later: Sprain. Serious or minor, a sprain happens as a result of stress to the ligaments or joints. It is one of the most common sports-related injuries so we really don’t tend to give it the attention it deserves. The most common effect is vulnerability to reoccurrence of the sprain in the same spot. If the sprain happened to the ankle, you risk ankle “instability.” Hamstring strain. The hamstrings are tendons that attach the large muscles at the back of the thigh to the thighbone. Recurrent hamstring injuries can affect your mobility and your flexibility. If you continually hurt your hamstrings doing something such as sprinting or jumping, you to need consider retiring from that activity to save yourself some pain in the future. Stress fracture. This is another sports injury that doesn’t garner the automatic attention it should. Stress fractures occur in weight-bearing areas and once they happen, they are likely to repeat in that same place. Stress fractures that aren’t properly managed can lead to larger, harder to heal stress fractures, or even chronic problems

such as pain or discomfort in your daily life. ACL injury. An anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury is the overstretching or tearing of the ligament in the knee. It is most commonly torn in sports that involve sudden stops, jumping, or changes in direction — including basketball, football, skiing, or tennis. Depending on the severity of your ACL injury, rehabilitation or surgery is the prescribed treatment. Meniscus tear. The meniscus is a piece of cartilage that provides a cushion between your thighbone and shinbone. The constant rubbing of a torn meniscus on the surrounding cartilage may cause wear and tear on the surface, leading to degeneration of the joint. Over time, this can compromise your mobility and cause chronic pain. Fracture. A broken bone may cause swelling, obvious bruising, and tenderness around the injured area. Unlike some stress fractures (through some may require a cast), a traditional fracture must be set with a cast. Repeated injuries to the same bone will increase your chance of arthritis in the future. While sports have many positives, no one can deny the toll the physical pounding can take on the body. Common sense is essential. Treating your injuries as soon as they occur is crucial, and to allow your injury to fully heal before getting back in the game. There is the pressure to get back in the game and not let your teammates down, or if you’re a runner, to get back to your personal best, but slow down - it will only help you in the future. Plus, your future body will thank you.

TIMESHARE PARADISE OR TIMESHARE HELL? Rod Davis CEO BBB serving Southeast Florida and the Caribbean

O

ur sister BBB in St. Louis recently conducted an in-depth study into timeshares and their findings provide insight into the pitfalls to avoid. Unlike most major purchases, a home, a car or even deciding which college to attend, most consumers polled in the study indicated they had not planned on making a purchase and were only attending for the vacation or other incentive provided as the trade for sitting through a timeshare presentation. As a result, most consumers had not researched the issue and were not prepared to make an informed decision. One of the factors we see contributing to consumer complaints coming to BBB is a lack of understanding about some aspect of a purchase. For example, in the moving industry, consumers don’t know how their move will be priced, the difference between a binding and non-binding offer and that without additional coverage, any damaged goods will only be reimbursed at 60 cents on the pound. The very best moving companies include a thorough education process for consumers during their initial discussions to make sure consumers

are active and informed partners with the mover and avoid potential misunderstandings. The St. Louis BBB report recommends the following for consumers: Do your research before making a purchase Don’t give in to high pressure sales pitches Take your time to make any decision Fully understand the total cost of a purchase (e.g. initial purchase price, closing costs, annual fees). Additionally, if you plan to be part of a network exchange program include the cost of the annual membership fee for the network. Compare the cost with other options (e.g. what you would spend for a similar vacation package each year, buying a timeshare on a secondary resale market, etc.) If you have second thoughts act quickly. Each state and country will have different terms to negate a purchase and make certain you know the law where a purchase is made. OutClique.com | 47

The Federal Trade Commission also provides great background information that helps consumers understand what they are buying when they purchase a timeshare: Two basic vacation ownership options are available: timeshares and vacation interval plans. The value of these options is in their use as vacation destinations, not as investments. Because so many timeshares and vacation interval plans are available, the resale value of yours is likely to be a good deal lower than what you paid. Both a timeshare and a vacation interval plan require you to pay an initial purchase price and periodic maintenance fees. The initial purchase price may be paid all at once or over time; periodic maintenance fees are likely to increase every year. Deeded Timeshare Ownership. In a timeshare, you either own your vacation unit for the rest of your life, for the number of years spelled out in your purchase contract, or until you sell it. Your interest is legally considered real property. You buy the right to use a specific unit at a specific time every year, and you may rent, sell, exchange, or bequeath your specific timeshare unit. You and the other timeshare owners collectively own the resort property. Unless you’ve bought the timeshare outright for cash, you are responsible for paying the monthly mortgage. Regardless of how you bought the timeshare, you also are responsible for paying an annual maintenance fee; property taxes may be extra. Owners share in the use and upkeep of the units and of the common grounds of the resort property. A homeowners’ association usually handles management of the resort. Timeshare owners elect officers and control the expenses, the upkeep of the resort property, and the selection of the resort management company. “Right to Use” Vacation Interval Option. In this option, a developer owns the resort, which is made up of condominiums or units. Each condo or unit is divided into “intervals” — either by weeks or the equivalent in points. You purchase the right to use an interval at

the resort for a specific number of years — typically between 10 and 50 years. The interest you own is legally considered personal property. The specific unit you use at the resort may not be the same each year. In addition to the price for the right to use an interval, you pay an annual maintenance fee that is likely to increase each year. Within the “right to use” option, several plans can affect your ability to use a unit: Fixed or Floating Time. In a fixed time option, you buy the unit for use during a specific week of the year. In a floating time option, you use the unit within a certain season of the year, reserving the time you want in advance; confirmation typically is provided on a firstcome, first-served basis. Fractional Ownership. Rather than an annual week, you buy a large share of vacation ownership time, usually up to 26 weeks. Biennial Ownership. You use a resort unit every other year. Lockoff or Lockout. You occupy a portion of the unit and offer the remaining space for rental or exchange. These units typically have two to three bedrooms and baths. Points-Based Vacation Plans. You buy a certain number of points, and exchange them for the right to use an interval at one or more resorts. In a points-based vacation plan (sometimes called a vacation club), the number of points you need to use an interval varies according to the length of the stay, size of the unit, location of the resort, and when you want to use it. Now that you know a little bit about what you don’t know, I hope you (and all consumers) will take time to research and only make informed decisions when confronted with a timeshare opportunity. If you can’t walk away from the deal the day it is presented and get the same deal the next day or a week later, then the business is relying on pressure rather than the true value of a product to make the sale. SAGE SOUTH FLORIDA CELEBRATES ITS 25TH ANNIVERSARY

O

n Sunday, September 22, 2019, SAGE South Florida will celebrate its 25th Anniversary Dinner at the Pelican Grand in Fort Lauderdale. Everyone worries from time to time about what life will be like for those of us fortunate enough to become an “eldergay.” Will it mean isolation and an inability to access needed services? Will it mean being without advocates and a supportive infrastructure? Will days be saddened by the absence of friends and family? Those worries are allayed by vibrant SAGE South Florida (Senior Action in a Gay Environment) that’s celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. Founded in 1994, SAGE South Florida was a fledgling group of about 10 members, using New York’s group as its model. It now has over 300 very active members and serves Broward and Palm Beach Counties. SAGE South Florida succeeds with its mission “to enrich the lives of the LGBT senior community. We accomplish this by sponsoring social alternatives providing personal interaction, offering educational opportunities to deal with the special needs of aging, and promoting contact with the isolated and homebound persons of our community.”

By Tony Adams

For 25 years, SAGE South Florida has fostered an array of enjoyable activities for its members. These include piano and vocal recitals, dinners, picnics, holiday parties, cruises, sporting events, Sunday brunches, and theater excursions. In short, all the experiences that no one should forfeit because of the needless restrictions of age. The current president of SAGE South Florida, Patrick Vida, notes that many of their activities are held in the afternoon for the sake of those members who are disinclined to travel at night. Kenneth Goodman, a past president of the group, talks about his fifteen years with SAGE South Florida, saying. I believe the opportunity to socialize and feel that you are part of a community with friends is what SAGE does best. As a 75 year-old senior myself, I appreciate that SAGE offers me a way to get out of the house and be with friends often in a place that is [LGBTQ] friendly. Socialization, rather than isolation, is what we get at SAGE.” SAGE South Florida welcomes new members throughout the year. Membership in SAGE South Florida is open to anyone 18 years of age and older who subscribes to its mission and goals. You don’t need to be a senior to join. SAGE promotes inter-generational communication in the LGBTQ community.

JESUS LOVES SOCCER By Rev. Patrick Rogers, MDiv.

I

feel that Jesus has been converted like the rest of us Americans and finally loves soccer and especially women’s soccer! How could he not be inspired after following the path of Megan Rapinoe! Megan as a pivotal member of the United States women's national soccer team, helped the U.S. win the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup.

Megan’s belief in human rights for the LGBTQ community and all oppressed people inspires her. Anyone who watches or listens to her can easily feel her passion for life. Megan’s passion for soccer and equality has recently elevated her to become a national figure for both. On Sunday, July 7, 2019, it was the Women’s World Cup soccer finals. The game began at 11:00AM that Sunday morning. Many churches were missing attendees! We know where they were! At home glued to the television set! The excitement over following Megan’s journey became so inspiring that people from all over the world were focused on her passion for soccer and for life! In 2007, Rapinoe suffered her second seasonending injury two games into the season. As difficult as that may seem, her strength was expressed through her statement: “I know this sounds weird, but getting hurt was one of the best things that ever happened to me. It really gave me a different perspective. Before, everything was going how it was supposed to be and I wasn't really appreciative of what I was doing and what it took to be there. The injury grounded me in a lot of different ways. The rehab process makes you stronger on all fronts, mentally and

physically. I feel stronger and a better person for it. I would never wish it on anyone, but I don't wish I could take it back." — Megan Rapinoe (2007) Now that the soccer finals are over Megan will return to focusing on her work for equality and philanthropy. Rapinoe has done philanthropic work for the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network (GLSEN) and the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee. In 2013, she became an ambassador for Athlete Ally, a nonprofit organization that focuses on ending homophobia and transphobia in sports. In September 2017, Rapinoe and U.S. teammate Alex Morgan were part of a group of soccer players who signed up for the "Common Goal" campaign created by Juan Mata of Manchester United. As participants in the campaign, players donate one percent of their individual wages in support of other soccer-related charities. Rapinoe and Morgan were the first two women players to sign on to the campaign. Megan Rapinoe – inspiring, passionate, generous, loving, a great example for us all – may God continue to bless you as you bless the world!

KINDNESS COMES EASY FOR FR. BOB CAUDILL By Tony Adams

I

n 1990, when Fr. Bob Caudill started his church All Saints Catholic Mission, he just wanted to do what any priest would want to do: say Mass and dispense sacraments such as baptism and marriage. He had no idea that he would also be dispensing hot meals daily for a huge community of folks in need including the poor, those in transition, addicts, and LGBT people down on their luck. Fr. Bob says, “One night, soon after I started the church, there was a knock on the window. The visitor said he was hungry and asked if I had anything to eat. I told him that all I had was some PB&J, chips, and a coke. Would that be okay? He said, ‘Sure!’ He sat down with me and we ate together. The next night he came back with a friend. That is how it started.” Fr. Bob’s parish has grown from five people to 450 families and includes a soup kitchen

60 | OutClique.com

where he serves hot meals every afternoon from 2:00-3:30PM. He says he does not lack for donated food and has expanded his service to include groceries and other basics for anyone in need. He remembers a gay couple that came to him when one was laid off and the other was ill. They had lost their apartment, and told him that someone had stolen their bicycles. A parishioner donated bikes without hesitation. Fr. Bob is a person who finds happiness in his service to others. You’ll hear it in his voice. He is also a man of patience who is accustomed to dealing with the usual roadblocks to simple charity. When he was a priest of the archdiocese of Miami, he could not openly marry same-sex couples. “After I started my own church, I was glad to be asked to marry a same-sex couple who were my friends,” said Fr. Bob. “Of course I said yes, and I laughed

when I told them that for the first time in my life I would be able to officiate at a samesex wedding without being worried that the photos would get back to the archdiocese!” Interestingly, the clergy of all the nearby Roman Catholic churches gave Fr. Bob their generous and wholehearted support, demonstrating that at the local level, most Roman Catholic priests follow the dictates of their consciences and hearts even though they do it under the radar. Fr. Bob could not personally operate that way, but he is grateful to those priests for their kindness and help. His experience of a hidebound church bureaucracy has well prepared him for dealing with a municipal bureaucracy with its own set of rules, regulations, and roadblocks. Fr. Bob and the City of Oakland Park hold different views about how his church and soup kitchen fit into the plan of development for that stretch of Powerline Road and how his operation and property should enjoy the status available to all other religious institutions. He is focused more on his ministry and less on legal wrangling. Through his work with the poor, Fr. Bob says he has learned not to label addicts and the destitute with a broad brush. He says, “Just as the LGBT community is diverse, the poor include many different groups, and it’s sad that many of us shun all of them entirely, refusing to talk to them, and never touching them.” In a world of calculations, optics, and influencers, it’s good to know there is someone in our local community who simply gives what he has to those in need. To learn more about his church and soup kitchen, call (954)-801-8283, check out the postings on Facebook (www.Facebook.com/ Soup.Kitchen.16), or stop by 3460 Powerline Road, Oakland Park, FL 33309 and say hello to Fr. Bob in person.

WHO AM I?

By Eric Noel Roman

P

lan ahead, prepare for the future, and remember life is fast paced. Always have a backup plan and give it your best all the time. Living life in the red line is engraved in our brains from day one. Staying focused, working hard, and moving forward are all great themes that help in the process of life and growing. However, it is also a great idea to tap those brakes. Slow down and soak in all of the sites in life.

Recently, I began to look at myself and explore my world. I began my journey as a regular guy pushing my hardest to be happy and balanced. I pushed hard to become a great obstacle racer, ultra marathoner, athlete, and excel in my career as a DJ. All of these accomplishments took time, drive, and determination. I was taking my spare time to work hard on my goals. Fast pace life, working in the night clubs, coming home early in the morning, sleeping three hours, only to bounce back up and train for various races. The routine is set. This led to many great discoveries of myself. I found that my potential is only limited to my own restrictions. Depression slowly crept back into the shadows; self awareness also helped to remove negative thoughts, but I was still somewhat lost. I had hit another bump in my road. What is missing? Ultimately, I realized, after listening to a few self-improvement audiobooks, that I was neglecting myself as I am. My body improved, my mind sharper than ever. Still, I kept asking myself, "Who am I?" My identity was missing. I fit into the worlds in which I had placed myself. As a DJ, I have

become locally known and am still ever expanding. As an athlete, people are inspired by the weight loss and finishing some of the more difficult races in the Spartan series. Am I an athlete? Am I a party animal? Let's face it, these worlds do not mix. However, through self-exploration I realized that it’s a balance. There are times as a top athlete I enjoy to let go and enjoy the party. In turn, the party has to stop and I have my body to hone. I added a third step to my routine. I now take time to be sure that my balance is present. I check to see how happy I am. There is no shame in living life enjoying all of the fruits. This is not a talent only I possess. Everyone has this skill. To keep your engine running strong, tap the brakes. Ask yourself everyday, "Am I happy?" Be proud of anything you accomplish. Stop once in awhile to celebrate your discoveries. Take the time to see if your actions make you happy. Balancing life is an important maintenance to keep that engine running strong. There is no shame in acting as two or more roles. We are dynamic and we should lead dynamic lives.

THE SPARROW HAS LANDED

AT THE DALMAR

By Steven O. Evans, PhD

h, the view. Yes, let’s start there. Overlooking all of Fort Lauderdale, FL, the new Sparrow bar at the sparkling Dalmar offers its visitors a roundabout scene of our beautiful city. Sit inside or outside, the floor to ceiling windows will give you a bird’s eye view of the city. Inside, you’ll step back in time with this 80’s retro look. No, Marsha, Greg, Jan, and Cindy won’t be there, but you might wonder if they had just stopped by for a drink. Sparrow boasts splashes of color, mixed with comfy couches, cozy tables for two, and cocktails that make for a snazzy look. Order your drinks at the bar highlighted by the pink neon lighting. You’ll wonder if Priscilla from down under will be around the corner. Start your night with their Let’s Get Incredible, Espolon blanco tequila, salted grapefruit cordial, rhubarb, lemon juice, seltzer, and black salt make for the perfect liquid refresher in a glass. Had a long, hard day at the beach? Try their Sunstroke. Sparrow blends Wild Turkey 101Rye Whiskey, pineapple, and lime juices, Ancho Reyes, and cinnamon for this enticing drink.

It’s served up in a tall glass with ice, so no need to worry about overheating. Looking to be more adventurous? Served up in a super cool glass from your grandma’s china hutch, the A1A boasts jalapeño Olmeca Altos Tequila, Lustau Amontillado, sherry, celery, lime juice, and salt. I would suggest using the Nashville filter when you post it on Insta so you will look super retro. Don’t forget to tag @thedalmar @theterracegrill @sparrowrooftop

@rosescoffeebar when you do.

But don’t “just” go for the atmosphere, the view, or the drinks. Take yourself and your date for the food, as well. Start with the Tempura Rock Shrimp. There’s lots of them and plenty to share. If you want to put your date “in the mood,” order up some of their oysters on the half shell. Finish up with some key lime pie, a little slice (pun intended) of Key West in downtown Fort Lauderdale. So make a date to check out the glamorous, new Dalmar Hotel and Sparrow at 299 N Federal Highway, Fort Lauderdale FL, 33301. Call (954) 945-9500, or for more information, visit their website at www.TheDalmar.com. OutClique.com | 79

TALKING ABOUT THE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM

Niki Lopez | Photo by Micheal Anthony Clark

By John M. Hayden

T

here is art you hang on your fridge. Some art you put on a wall to fill space. And then there is art that leaves you speechless. And that’s the type of art Niki Lopez creates and inspires. But instead of leaving you speechless, she wants to get you talking. Niki’s groundbreaking art project, What’s Your Elephant, is a thought provoking venture with the purpose of making you feel uncomfortable and giving you a safe space to talk about those feelings. “What's Your Elephant uses the arts to create safe spaces and talk about anything unspoken,” Niki told me. “Whether it's sexual abuse. Whether it's gender equality. Whether it's racism." The project gets its name from the old phrase ‘ignoring the elephant in the room,’ a situation everyone knows exists but no one wants to talk about. “It’s about acknowledging the elephant and owning it, so that it doesn’t

100 | OutClique.com

define you. It's really vulnerable talking about those things. Other people have been ‘Wow, me too. I want to go home and look at my own elephants.’” She knows what she’s talking about. Niki has a few elephants of her own. She was raised and sexually abused in a “religious” cult. It was there she began developing her artistic instincts. Then it was an escape from reality. It wouldn’t be until many years later and well into young adulthood, that she would begin to see art as a calling. “I had a regular job but didn't fit into anything like that. But I was always drawn back to art." Taking her raw talent to the next level turned out to be easier said than done. “At that point, because I didn't have traditional training, I was actually intimidated to paint because I never painted before. I just knew I wanted to.”

“Each piece has significance and shares segments of myself and journeys of self discovery.” Niki’s work consists of paintings, mixedmedia sculptures, video and installations. “Some of my work allows me to explore symbols and concepts from ancient cultures and ideologies, as well as provoke thought as to the probability of life in other dimensions and galaxies and how we are all interconnected.” When speaking on some of her alien themed works, “People feel we're the only life force on Earth in all of the galaxies, which I feel is silly." What’s not silly is her What’s Your Elephant project and using divisive topics to unite people. "It shifted in my work in terms of still doing the artwork but having a much larger meaning and impact in community building.” Step one, is getting people to come together, even when they know just showing up can be uncomfortable. “We do exhibitions and artist talks and workshops, and seeing the impact these people are getting. Not all elephants are about abuse. Sadly when I do workshops I can count at least two, three, four projects being about sexual abuse."

From there, Niki helps them use art to go to an uncomfortable place. “Everybody works on a piece about an elephant they want to share and then talk about it. Using the arts, but definitely the discussion is a huge part of it.” One person sticks out in Niki’s mind to this day. “An elderly woman said she was molested by both of her parents and never told anybody until that day. She never felt safe to tell anybody, she never dealt with any of those things." Many come to deal with other issues. “A woman participating in the workshop said she didn’t understand why people needed to say black President. She said she didn’t see color. Through the discussion she became aware of her privilege. My kid doesn't even have to doubt whether he can be a president one day, because our presidents are typically white." "It gives people the space to talk about those (issues). People aren't going to be comfortable saying 'I'm a racist' or 'I went through a period of time when I was a racist.'" Niki welcomes those opinions, because unless you open up, you stay closed off. "The thing is you can't get to the solution if you can't even give people a space to say 'I have a prejudice.’ ‘I am racist.' I have homophobia.' Now we can deal with it."

FLOCKFEST 2019 By Denny Patterson

T

housands of people made their way downtown to Sebastian Beach on Fort Lauderdale Beach July 6 for the fifth annual FlockFest. FlockFest Events is a non-profit organization dedicated to creating events that are fun and benefit the local community’s charitable organizations. “It is basically a day of celebrating South Florida’s sun, sand, and surf while raising money for charity,” founder Steven Crawford says. “FlockFest started five years ago with a group of friends. It just seemed like something fun to do. There were about 30 people at the first FlockFest, and by the third year, people started approaching me with the idea of turning it into a charity event. FlockFest 4 was the first charity event, and we partnered with the Renand Foundation to raise money to fund the event.” Crawford estimated around 3,000 people to be in attendance, and they experienced all that Fort Lauderdale Beach has to offer, and then some. “This is a free event, and we provide a cash bar, food, and DJs for the general attendee,” he says. “For our VIPs, well, they get food and drinks provided as well as some FlockFest beach gear like sunglasses, an event tank top, and a few other gifts. Oh, and let’s not forget a giant flamingo float!” Proceeds went to the Renand Foundation, Julian’s Fountain of Youth, and United Dog Rescue. “FlockFest is a fun way to hang out with your friends and help raise money for charity at the

same time,” Crawford says. “We provide people with a way of giving that seems more like a day at the beach.” Although Flockfest has several perks, like any event, there are some challenges. “The biggest challenge was making sure we all respect the beach and the turtles that nest there,” Crawford says. “And getting all the floats blown up on the beach is no easy task either. Luckily there are more than enough volunteers to help us make this happen. I am always surprised at how many people offer to volunteer instead of partying with their friends on the beach. I am indebted to them all.” Miami resident Marcus Christi and his husband Jakob decided to check out FlockFest after hearing about it from some friends. “Jakob and I are always in Fort Lauderdale,” Christi says. “When we heard about FlockFest, we were like sure, let’s go. I am so glad we did. This was such a fun event, and the fact that proceeds benefit local non-profits makes it even better. We will for sure be attending next year’s event.” In the past, FlockFest has been held either at the end of June or beginning of July, but Crawford is undecided if it will always be in conjunction around the Fourth of July weekend. However, his goal for next year is simple. He will continue to make FlockFest bigger and better. A MUSICAL REVOLUTION COMES TO SOUTH FLORIDA

hush comes over the audience. The conductor raises his arms. The musicians inhale. What comes next is a musical moment unique to Fort Lauderdale. The South Florida Pride Wind Ensemble has been hitting a high note in our community for more than 30 years and is tuning up for another landmark concert. The ensemble is working on a show called "Revolution," commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots. Dan Bassett is the Artistic Director for the group, and told Outclique the show takes the audience on a musical journey that will "trace the path of the LGBTQ movement, and will contemplate where we are headed next." Dan says there is also fresh music in store. "Two brand-new commissioned pieces will be debuted at the Lesbian Gay Bands Association (LGBA) national conference the weekend prior and will be featured on our concert. Both composers are part of the gay community and they have shared with us how excited they are to have their pieces performed to commemorate 50 years of the LGBTQ movement." Aside from the amazing music, Dan says the big show will also have the hostess with the mostest. "I am also very excited to announce that Ms. Coco Peru will be our host and emcee for the concert. You may have seen Miss Peru on recent episodes of Will and Grace. Coco's performances always have a very timely message, which is why I believe she will be a great addition to this very important concert." Dan's heart has beat to the rhythm of music his entire life, and the love kept growing with every step of his music education. "I received a tremendous music education through my public school system in Malone, NY. From there I went to Ithaca College in Ithaca, NY, receiving a bachelor's degree in music education and trumpet performance. While at Ithaca College, I began working summers at French Woods Festival for the Performing Arts where I played

in band, jazz ensemble, orchestra, and pit orchestras. I also taught private lessons. Following college, Dan had a brief tour as a pit orchestra musician. That journey was what led him to our community. "I came to South Florida where I taught high school band in Boca Raton. I continued my music education at Florida State where I received a master's degree in music education. I have performed as a church musician at MCC Sunshine Cathedral and the First United Methodist Church of Fort Lauderdale." It was then that he found The Pride Wind Ensemble. "Soon after moving to South Florida, I knew that I wanted to continue playing my trumpet in some way. I was told about the South Florida Pride Wind Ensemble (known as the Flamingo Freedom Band at the time) and called their personnel director. He was very persistent, which I am very grateful for. I attended a rehearsal, met some great people, and was hooked. His instrument of choice is the trumpet, a choice he made early in his music education for dubious reasons. "I chose the trumpet because I thought it would be easy, just three buttons!" Turns out, it's a lot harder than it looks. Lucky for all of us, he stuck with it. "Even though I was wrong about that, I was lucky enough to have great instructors throughout my trumpet playing career." The Pride Wind Ensemble has been around for several decades under several names, and wouldn't be here today if not for the passion and hard work of a couple of men. Dan told us that, "In 1986, Mort Jonas and Bruce Freeman decided to form a musical group for the gay and lesbian community in South Florida. Jonas had recently returned from a vacation in San Francisco where he had connected with an organization called the Lesbian and Gay Band Association (LGBA) that was performing at the Gay Games II." And like Dan when he joined, Bruce was a new Floridian with a love of music. "Freeman had just moved to Fort Lauderdale OutClique.com | 111

from Washington, D.C. where he had been a founding member of the DC's Different Drummers, one of the more established gay bands in the country. Together Mort and Bruce created the band that over the years has gone through two name changes, several artistic directors and many concert venues. Clearly a connection was made with the LGBA. The Pride Wind Ensemble has hosted their convention seven times. This fall Dan's group will co-host the convention in Orlando with the Tampa and Orlando bands. Staying creative, especially in the entertainment field, is always a challenge, but Dan was quick to share what sets this ensemble apart. "I get inspiration for our concert themes from just about everything. Sometimes the theme comes from a really great song, a meaningful event, or ideas from musicians in the ensemble. The fall and spring concerts are with just the adults and we always include collaborations with local talent." And when he says 'local talent,' he's not just talking about musicians. "We've had everything from magicians and circus performers to dancers and full-sized choirs join us on our concerts. In terms of themes, I pick something that I think our audience will respond to and build the concert from there. Our members also have a chance to request songs to be played that fit the theme." Dan also loves working with and supporting the next generation of musicians. "Our Youth Pride Band, which is going into its ninth year in existence is truthfully my pride and joy. I was able to have a hand in the creation of this incredible group. High school students, mostly

from the tri-county area apply to be a part of the Youth Pride Band whose main objective is to give children of all backgrounds a safe space to be themselves all while standing up against bullying in our schools. Each year multiple $1,000 college scholarships are awarded to high school juniors and seniors from the Youth Band. These are made possible through private donors and grants. To date, we have given away $104,000 in scholarships." And if you think you've got what it takes to hit a high note with the Pride Wind Ensemble, Dan says anyone who plays an instrument is welcome to try out. They rehearse every Wednesday at 7:00PM at St. Mark's Episcopal School in Fort Lauderdale. While Revolution may be the most high-profile and anticipated upcoming show, it's not the only iron in the fire for Dan and the group. He told us they keep a very busy schedule. "The Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble and Marching Band produce two major concerts per year at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. In addition to formal concerts, they have performed at pride events from Jacksonville to Key West, Christmas on Las Olas, Christmas Eve at MCC Sunshine Cathedral, the Tuesday's Angels Bike Ride, and many other events as requested. The bands regularly share the stage with local performers and believes strongly in supporting local talent. The wind ensemble has had the pleasure of collaborating with the Fort Lauderdale Gay Men's Chorus, Lambda Chorale, In Harmony, MCC Sunshine Cathedral Choir and the Florida Singing Sons Boychoir. Along with these local collaborators, singers, dancers, special lighting and video presentations all add to the bands' large-scale productions."

The Revolution concert is set for October 19, 2019 at 7:00PM in the Amaturo Theater of the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. To learn more about the South Florida Pride Wind Ensemble and all its upcoming shows, head over to www.PrideWindEnsemble.org/Home.

TRANS COMMUNITY FINDS COMFORT IN FORT LAUDERDALE

outh Florida is transcending perceptions and transparency. Leading members of the Trans community will be visiting Fort Lauderdale to attend the annual Southern Comfort Transgender Conference (SCTC). The weekend of August 15-17, 2019 will feature plenty of guest speakers, networking, seminars and tons of fab fun.

“Greater Fort Lauderdale is a progressive destination, and we are very proud to sponsor this conference,” said Stacy Ritter, President and CEO of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau. “Celebrating diversity and inclusion is something we are very passionate about and this signature conference does just that.” “The trans community is too often overlooked and underrepresented. This amazing conference is taking its turn in the spotlight to focus on everything from inclusion and acceptance to family and fun,” said Richard Gray, Senior Vice President of Diversity and Inclusion for the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau. He’s worked for 28 years to make Broward County a destination for everyone, and bringing Southern Comfort is an accomplishment that came courtesy of a special bit of inspiration and vision when thinking about the LGBT+ community. “Four years ago I said to myself, ‘I have this enormous global tourism platform and I say LGBT+ all the time, but what is the T, the forgotten T.’ After the first ever transgender travel study that we sponsored we launched a trans campaign called, ‘Where Happy Meets Go Lucky.’ We never looked back after that. It has been an amazing journey.

“The conference sits really nicely here. And it shows that we, in Fort Lauderdale and South Florida, welcome all travelers. The trans platform is a complex platform. I learn more and more each day about the trans market. We highlight how inclusive we are. We feel that trans people are really important.” Having a conference like this fits perfectly in a mission nearly 25 years old in Broward County. “We’ve been in this platform as global thought leaders since 1996 when we launched our Rainbow Campaign. We are one of the longest running bureaus that markets to the LGBT+ traveler. We have become global pioneers in the trans platform.”

The theme of this year’s conference is A Safe Space to Explore and Celebrate the Gender Spectrum, something Richard says is perfect for Fort Lauderdale. “This is a destination where the trans community feels safe and free to be themselves. I think that sums up greater Fort Lauderdale.” Our community was the first destination in the world to promote being trans friendly and the first destination in the world to include trans, lesbian, gay and straight people in their mainstream marketing. “We want all of our travelers to have a better experience. Now we’re focusing on the trans community.” Lots of guest speakers are coming and will hold seminars on a variety of topics. Makeup artist extraordinaire, Amy Vodkahaus, is very excited to be back. She hit up last year’s conference and has had a busy year telling organizers, “Over the past couple of years, I have expanded my horizons in this field within our community. I started attending all the conferences and before I knew it, this is the only thing I do for a living. My dog loves it, we get to spend so much time together. Every day I wake up grateful for all the wonderful people I meet through my work, networking opportunities that are presented to me, and for all the love, respect, and acceptance for

me and all those around me. I guess I found my happy bubble.” Also on the beauty front, Laurie Chisum, the founder of Everyday Beautiful Wigs & Glam is coming. She is an industry leader specializing in both custom wigs and glamorous transformations and is driven by her love of helping people. There will also be plenty of speakers highlighting visibility, from living day to day in your community to political awareness and advancement. Sarah McBride is the National Press Secretary for the Human Rights Campaign and the author of, Tomorrow Will Be Different: Love, Loss, and the Fight for Trans Equality. She was also the first openly transgender person to address a major party political convention when she spoke at the 2016 Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia. And visibility is important. As Richard points out, there are still a lot of closets yet to be opened. “A lot of trans women define as lesbian. A lot of them are stealth. A lot aren’t out to their own partners. It’s a very stealth community. Which is why safety is important but they want to blend in. It’s about being free to be themselves.”

But it’s the keynote speakers you won’t want to miss! Reality star, Van Barnes, will be addressing the conference, talking about her successes and, just as impactful, her struggles. Van is probably best known as the first person to out the CIS male lead actor who was eventually fired from Amazon’s award winning and critically acclaimed TV show, Transparent, when she joined the #metoo movement, disclosing her experience working several seasons as the personal assistant to the lead actor. Van began acting way back in the early 1980s, appeared on plenty of daytime talk shows in the 90s as a club kid, and finally transitioned. That was likely her biggest challenge, having to do it twice before finally getting it right. She appeared on Caitlyn Jenner’s reality show, I Am Cait, on E! and is now married and proudly living a self-described, Green Acres style hillbilly life.

Now if you think the group is going to stay cloistered in the Riverside Hotel quietly talking amongst themselves for three days, you don’t know the SCTC. They will be out and about across Broward County. Richard says it’s their opportunity to just be themselves. “The wait staff doesn’t give them a second look. They’re people. Another reason why I think this is a great destination.” There will be a dinner at Lips, a Princess Event Day, and a gala to wrap up things (or really get the party started) on Saturday night. The trans community is still fighting for acceptance in all areas of life. This month they bring the fight to South Florida for three days of fun, education and, most importantly, visibility. “They inspire me,” Richard says. “Their journeys are remarkable. Those journeys inspire me and make me want to do more for trans people.”

honorees will be recognized at similar events throughout the upcoming artistic season. ArtServe will also reveal its creative laboratory, where guests will connect with “HOME” featured artists as they are immersed in their creative processes, rehearsing work throughout the space that will be brought together at the close of the evening in a collaborative performance art piece celebrating the concept of ‘home.’ Under the artistic direction of Dario J. Moore, a Broward-based director and choreographer, the performance features former Miami City Ballet dancer and stroke survivor Isanusi Garcia Rodriguez and his mother, Perla Rodriguez, a renowned former dancer from Cuba. Following a stroke that left the right side of his body paralyzed, Rodriguez was forced to reinvent himself, subsequently discovering a new joy and purpose in life through art, family and community. The evening’s collaborative performance is partially inspired by Rodriguez’s perception of ‘home’ through a celebration of his Cuban heritage and transcendence of his physical limitations. Also making significant contributions to the performance are Broward filmmaker and Sistrunk-A-Fair co-founder Emmanuel George, photo artist David Muir and visual

artist Anna Goraczko. Spoken word from Thou Art Women, an inclusive LGBTQ organization founded by event producer Ghenete “G” Wright Muir, and live music from local musicians further enrich the work. “Providing opportunities for artists and the community to further diversity, inclusivity and social change through the arts is just one part of the equation,” added Johnson. “We also have a responsibility to celebrate and recognize the individuals who have been trailblazers in that domain. ArtServe and Broward County never would have reached this incredible turning point had it not been for arts professionals and aficionados like Andrew Martineau and Evan Snow, who served as catalysts and pioneers of using art to bring people together. Our honorees embody ArtServe’s new vision and it’s a privilege to recognize them and their achievements.” For more information and tickets, visit www.Artserve.org. Tickets to attend the VIP Preview Night on August 22 are $75 each and include valet parking, gourmet bites, an open wine bar and a silent auction. TWIN SPIN

AN INTERVIEW WITH GAY IDENTICAL TWINS MICHAEL AND ZACH ZAKAR

By Gregg Shapiro 132 | OutClique.com

Even if there was just one of them, the story that the Zakar twins, Michael and Zach, have to tell is unlike anything you’ve ever heard. First told in their 2017 memoir, Pray The Gay Away, Michael and Zach convey how their devout (and deeply homophobic) Chaldean Catholic mother not only didn’t accept the fact that her identical twin sons were both gay, but employed a series of absurd methods to cure them of their homosexuality. The good news is that she failed miserably. In addition to their childhood home being ruled by their religious zealot mother, Michael and Zach also had a surprisingly antagonistic relationship that changed dramatically when they came out to each other. Fast forward to 2019 and Pray The Gay Away has been adapted for the stage starring none other than the Zakar twins! After all, who better to tell their story than the guys themselves. I spoke with the brothers shortly before the show opened in Fort Lauderdale. Gregg Shapiro: I recently interviewed actress and singer/songwriter Jessica Harper who is a twin. In fact, there are two sets of twins in her family. What would each of you say is the best part of being a twin? Zach Zakar: Having a twin is like having a built-in best friend. Being a twin makes you feel naturally special. Sometimes I get this strange feeling we were put on this planet for something special because of the mere fact that I am a twin.

GS

What’s the worst part of being a twin?

Michael Zakar: The worst part is working together. We tell everyone we’re like an old married couple that does everything together, except play around [laughs]. So, six out of seven days a week, we’re fighting. They say your worst critic is yourself, obviously that person didn’t have a twin [laughs].

GS

I’m glad you mentioned fighting, because early on, your story shatters a couple of myths about twins. One is that twins have a sort of telepathic connection and know everything about each other, and another is that twins are the other’s best friend and are kind and loving to one another. In fact, on p. 202, Zach wrote, “We fight. It’s our dynamic.” Can you say something about the exceptions to the twin rule?

ZZ

We’ve been together for 26 years. We wouldn’t call it telepathic connection, but knowing the person inside and out. One thing that I do find true about twins is the whole “yin and yang” concept; Michael and I look the same, but we’re definitely two very different people.

GS

When religion is used as a weapon, as it was in your home and at church, do you still think it’s possible to find faith from another source, say becoming a Buddhist, a Quaker, or a Unitarian Universalist, or converting to Judaism?

ZZ

Religion can be a beautiful thing. But similar to what we saw in our mother, if you rely too heavily on it, is it healthy? Believe what you want, but if you treat religion similar to how you use drugs, as a way to cope, then it becomes a problem.

GS

What was the impetus for you to co-write your memoir Pray The Gay Away, and was it a synchronous decision or did one of you come up with the idea first?

ZZ

We went to film school. After our mother tried “de-gaying” us with green grapes blessed by a priest, I told Michael to write down that whole experience to be used later for inspiration in a movie script on a sticky note. Then our mother began to do more and more things to de-gay us. The sticky notes added up and the book wrote itself. OutClique.com | 133

Photos courtesy of Zakar Twins

GS

Michael, on p. 71, you wrote, “I never felt different until people started looking at me differently.” In context, this refers to being treated differently because of your Middle Eastern heritage. Would you also say it’s applicable to being gay, and what advice would you offer to those who are also looked at differently?

MZ

You’ll find that people won’t like you for no reason whatsoever. Accept the fact that every person you meet will view you differently, but just be a person you’re proud of and everything else will fall in place. Being Arab males, we’ve always resonated with being gay first and then Arab because it always felt like this was truly who we are. 136 | OutClique.com

GS

A turning point occurs on p. 87. It’s the moment you both discover the other is gay. Do you recall the feeling, and does it still resonate with you today?

MZ

That moment is a day we will never forget. Everyone always asks if we knew one another were gay, but truthfully, we were both [too involved in] dealing with our own gay problems to notice the other’s gay issues. So, when we both had that “you too?” moment, it reminds me that we are the same. The first thing we did was grab our yearbook and circle every guy we thought that was cute and would date from our grade [laughs].

GS

As I was reading the book, I kept thinking, about the possibility of

reconciliation with your mother. Then I read the final chapter and saw the acknowledgement where you express your gratitude to her. What does reaching an understanding with your mother mean to each of you?

ZZ

MZ

For me, I just want both sides to be happy. I don’t want to live a life filled with guilt and or shame, but I always thought I played a part in my parents’ happiness and emotional state and I didn’t want to hurt them because I just wanted to be myself. It was more of a learning process for our mom, we had to teach her acceptance.

Photos courtesy of Zakar Twins

GS

Please say something about the process of turning Pray The Gay Away

Photos courtesy of Zakar Twins

For me, it was getting that feeling that I was good enough and she was proud of her son. I want her to see that I can be gay and successful, that being gay was helpful, not a hinderance. Our mom has a notion that gay people can’t be successful. You have to realize the word “gay” doesn’t have a translation in our dialect of Arabic so to our mom it was literally a confusing concept of what we are. A new disease? into a stage show.

MZ

Nuts [laughs]! Especially for the fact that we are not just acting in it, but [we] also wrote the show along with the original editor, Bobby Brower, a brilliant playwright in NYC. Our executive producers Murray and Peter Present, gave us complete creative freedom in the writing process, which doesn’t usually happen for independent writers. Sometimes Zach and I have to take a step back and realize that this show is literally about our life in Michigan, about a book we thought no one would read, when 50 book agents said it wouldn’t resonate with many people.

GS

What are you most looking forward to about bringing Pray The Gay Away to a live audience?

ZZ

Many gay plays can be very sad. Pray The Gay Away is a funny night out that people won’t forget. It will remind you of all the silliness that comes along with coming out. We are an all gay cast and crew and excited to bring this story to life. Three years in the making and it’s ready for Florida!

BREATHTAKING

AN INTERVIEW WITH TERRI NUNN OF BERLIN By Gregg Shapiro

Gregg Shapiro: Before you became a musician known for dance-oriented music, you played Jeannie in the 1978 disco movie Thank God It’s Friday, alongside Jeff Goldblum, Debra Winger and the late Donna Summer. Is there a special memory from making that movie that you’d like to share? Terri Nunn: I think the most special thing about that is that it was the debut of Donna Summer. She was getting some recognition for the music, but this was her on the screen. The amazing thing is that Giorgio Moroder to me, was just wow! I couldn’t believe the sound that he was getting. I got to meet him on the set. The movie was produced by Neil Bogart at Casablanca Records. I met Giorgio and I was speechless and excited. He was so not interested in me at all. To him, I was just a stupid little 18-year-old actress. A few years 138 | OutClique.com

I

n 1982, when Berlin’s debut album Pleasure Victim was re-released on Geffen Records, pop music was in a state of flux. The homophobic and racially motivated 1979 Disco Demolition pushed dance music off the radio paving the way for rock and roll hair bands to take over. At the same time, UK new wave bands, including The Human League, Duran Duran and Depeche Mode, subversively made dance beats and synthesizers cool again. Berlin’s controversial first minor hit single “Sex (I’m A…)” (from Pleasure Victim) effortlessly combined the energy of new wave and disco. By the time the group’s big hit single, “No More Words,” arrived on the airwaves, dance music for the masses was becoming acceptable again. A couple of years later, Berlin would have its greatest triumph with the track “Take My Breath Away” from the Tom Cruise movie Top Gun. Lead vocalist Terri Nunn, who has been there throughout Berlin’s nearly 40 year existence, was kind enough to answer a few questions before the band embarked on a summer concert tour.

Berlin performs in Fort Lauderdale at the Broward Center on August 29, 2019. later, to have an Oscar with the song that we created together (“Take My Breath Away” from the 1986 movie Top Gun), who could have known? It wasn’t on my radar yet! I wanted to make music, but I wasn’t even close to that. He had no idea that later on he would be creating “Take My Breath Away” with me, which he has said numerous times that he feels it’s his greatest work.

GS

I’m so glad you mentioned Giorgio because I think the Berlin song “Sex (I’m A…)” was the best song that Giorgio Moroder never wrote.

TN

[Big laugh] You know why it sounds like a Giorgio Moroder song? I’ll out us. We have already said this before; this isn’t an exclusive because we’ve copped to it before. We took his bass line from “I Feel Love” (sings

the part and the lyrics) and inverted it (sings the part). So, it’s going up instead of down. We started with that groove which we took from him and changed it a little bit and built on that.

GS TN

Did he ever comment on it?

Oh, yeah! We told him right away. We were on our hands and knees begging him to work with us on the second album. We had no money yet, but we managed to snag him for the song “No More Words.” That was exactly the time he got the Top Gunsoundtrack. It was literally being in the right place at the right time because we had no name (recognition) yet. Nobody knew who we were because we hadn’t had a hit yet.

GS

Thank you for mentioning Top Gun. Kenny Loggins is said to be rerecording “Danger Zone” for the Top Gun sequel. Have you and Berlin been invited back to contribute to the soundtrack?

TN

We are in talks. I hadn’t heard anything about Kenny. They haven’t decided, I think, because the music is the last thing to go on a movie. I think they’re still shooting it. Of course, we’d love to be part of it. If I could be part of it with Giorgio, even better!

GS

Back to “Sex (I’m A…),” for a moment. I was thinking about how the line “Am I bi” was a daring lyric to include in a song in 1982. Do you remember the reaction that line received?

TN

The entire song received such a strong reaction. We were banned in certain states. A couple of states in the South wouldn’t play the record or have us play live there. They thought it was awful and blasphemous and we were the devil’s children. I actually heard that said [laughs]. Now you look at that and it’s nothing with what’s said!

GS

Yes, it’s so tame by comparison.

TN

At the time, that specific topic had never been said in a song. I think people were up in arms because they’d never heard a woman talk that way, even though women talk that way to each other all the time. About our fantasies, about how we feel, about how guys are, and all that, but it had never been put to music.

GS

Because dance music has been a central component of Berlin’s music, as recently as 2013’s Animal album, and the queer community has a fondness for that style of music, are you aware of an LGBTQ following?

TN

Oh, yes! We get invited to do Prides quite often. Of anything that we do, that’s one of my favorite shows to do. What could be more fun than a Pride? There was one in South Carolina that was really rough. There were so many protestors, people with signs outside. It was like, “Dude, really? What year are we in?” It’s just so much more of an accepted concert experience for people that this (kind of protest) was really unusual. I’m glad that that’s unusual now. It’s a wonderful gathering of people. It’s both the most outrageous and the safest musical experience with people together that I’ve ever had. When we get asked to do a Pride, we’re there!

GS

Berlin is on tour this summer with the B-52s. What are you most looking forward to about that concert tour?

TN

Two things. Getting to play a lot of cities that we have not (played). We’re doing 32 cities – headlining and on tour with them. We’re going into places we haven’t been in a while. I’m looking forward to that. The B-52s are, for me, one of the greatest bands in music. Kate with her beehive hairdo! They’re like Devo and Pink Floyd. Bands that are so unique. They never sounded like anyone else to begin with. There’s no way to place them in any time frame because they were completely their own animal in the time frame they were in. Therefore. it never ages. It’s just this music that is amazing forever. I’m so honored to have a chance to get to do a bunch of shows with them this year. OutClique.com | 139
