REFRESH AT LA CONCHA HOTEL & SPA By Steven O. Evans, PhD

K

ey West is open again after Hurricane Irma pounded her way through, and it's ready for guests to make their way back to soak up the rays with cocktail in hand. Located right in the heart of Key West’s Duval Street, La Concha Hotel & Spa is a lovely spot to escape the daily grind and refresh. Originally opened in 1926 as a luxury hotel, this National Historic Landmark stands out on Duval Street as a beacon for travelers. It was updated in 1953, and continues to be a traveler favorite. Here you’re right in the midst of the best of what Key West has to offer - shopping, dining, nightlife and beaches. No need to drive while you’re here, as everything is within walking distance. Take a walk from the hotel and you will notice rainbow flags flying up and down Duval Street and LGBTs aplenty. You’ll notice right away La Concha isn’t your typical Key West resort. It’s a contemporary version of classic Key West style, incorporating an element of chic design to the interior, so it’s not all bright colors here. As you step into the lobby you’ll immediately feel like the hotel is a haven, with a shady, relaxed vibe, which is more than welcome break from the blazing Florida sun. Not only is the hotel located in the historic

district, but there is some real history within the hotel itself. Some famous guests here have included both Ernest Hemingway and Tennessee Williams. Williams most famously was noted to have stayed here as he finished his arguably most famous work, A Streetcar Named Desire. You might see where he got some of his inspirations in the surroundings. With 160 rooms, guests have several room options for their stay, from standard 2 double beds to a Deluxe King Suite (with or without a balcony view) featuring a private bedroom with a king-size bed and a queen-size sofa bed. All the rooms are very spacious and continue on with the Caribbean chic design, dark wood plantation furniture, coastal-inspired shutters, marble showers, granite countertops and a very unique detail—the ceilings are painted a deeply calming shade of blue. It’s a stark change from the usual white, but you’ll find it has a positive impact on your mood. There are also all the modern amenities one could need with a few added bonuses to help make your stay more comfortable: free wifi, 42” flatscreen TV, mini refrigerator and CD player. There’s really no need to leave the hotel to have a fun vacation and experience Key West. With a Jamba Juice, Starbucks, wine bar, and

restaurant all connected to the hotel, you have plenty of options in which to indulge (or energize for a day out). Wine-O, the hotel’s wine bar, is a lovely stop for happy hour, serving up more than 200 wines, either by the glass or bottle, small plates, craft beer and even flights of rum. The hotel’s lobby restaurant, 420 Duval, is a “casual but elegant” experience with a lounge-y vibe, open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It’s not just hotel guests you’ll find dining here, as it is an island favorite. The choices here won’t disappoint, including a menu consisting of fresh seafood and Caribbean-inspired dishes such as herb-encrusted grouper picatta (made with local parmesan), sautéed spinach, whipped potatoes, brown butter, and crispy capers, or a more traditional Southern dish like shrimp and grits. Whatever you choose, be sure to start with a fruity cocktail and end the meal with a slice of Key Lime pie to be sure you get a true taste of the island life. This is the Keys after all! We’d be remiss not to tell you to take a swim in the hotel’s rooftop pool (right next to the bar if you want to swim with cocktail in hand), or better yet, schedule time for a spa treatment. La Concha’s award-winning Top Spa on the hotel’s sixth floor offers deep tissue massages, pedicures, facials, and sugar scrub body treatments. The truly unique part of the experience here is that sessions take place in private suites with panoramic views of downtown Key West. Added features like rain showers, a flat screen TV, fully stocked mini

fridge (with healthy snacks of course) and even the ability to order beverages or Tapas while you’re relaxing make it the perfect spot to recharge for couples or small groups of friends. And best of all, your treatment comes with a complimentary glass of wine from Wine-O. We highly recommend making an appointment to start your stay off right, getting you in the mindset of island time! La Concha has a knowledgeable concierge on hand if you are in need of assistance booking activities while you’re in town. Whether it's circling the island by jet ski or renting scooters to explore the city by bike, there are several ideas for all different types of travelers. If it’s nightlife you’re after, Key West’s gay bars are all within walking distance. Visitor and local favorites include the clothing-optional resorts Island House or Equator (day passes are available for both if you want to take a naked swim or just say you’re there for a drink to avoid a cover). Aqua Bar & Nightclub is a popular spot for drag performances (and that means for everyone, straight and gay alike!), or the more local spots like Sidebar, 801 Bourbon Bar or Saloon 1 - not for the faint at heart. You’re also within walking distance of other favorite Key West staples, including the repainted and restored Southernmost Point marker. Wander over to Fort Zachary Taylor to catch the sunset or stop in at the Hemingway House. Whatever you choose to do (or even if you choose to do nothing at all - hey, it’s Key West), La Concha makes for a very relaxing escape.

BYEBYE, BOOZE!

WHAT HAPPENED WHEN I STOPPED DRINKING By Joey Leslie

People sometimes think it’s weird that I don’t drink. I’m totally okay with that. It’s usually the first hurdle to dating in Miami. When I mention that I don’t drink, guys tend to think that means they can’t drink around me, and I can see them playing out our entire (short) relationship in their minds. “Seriously,” I assure him. “You can drink. I don’t have a problem with it. It’s just a personal choice for me. No judgment.” And that’s where he usually asks me why I stopped drinking. I’ve gotten so good at the story that I thought I’d share it here. It’s been a life changer for me, and you’re probably shopping around for your own New Year’s resolution. So maybe I can challenge you to a little experiment while we’re at it. For context and to establish my authority on the topic, this is the second time since I started drinking in college that I’ve gone totes sober. The first time, I didn’t drink for an entire year. Then I started working in corporate America and that all went sour. Last August, I decided to do a booze detox again before a trip to visit friends in Puerto Rico and I felt so good that I kept it going, even during my vacation. Here’s how cutting out alcohol has improved my life, health, bank account, body, and brain, all over the course of a year. WITHIN 30 DAYS OF NO DRINKING 10 | OutClique.org

No more hangovers For some people, hangovers tend to get more intense with age, even after only a few drinks. I was one of those people. But after years of drinking, waking up to sluggish mornings with red eyes, and a dull throb in the back of my brain, were all things I had come to accept. All the cost of doing business. Nothing two cups of water, an aspirin, and 3 cups of coffee couldn’t handle. Or if they didn’t cure it, I’d call in a Bloody Mary. Within the first two weeks, consistently waking up without a hangover, while feeling fully rested, hydrated, alive - it was basically like being a Disney princess. I literally caught myself flinging open my shades one morning, half expecting a pair of bluebirds to help me slip into a sundress for a day of picking flowers and spinning gracefully in a field. No shame spiral With hangovers handled, by the end of the first month I felt a lot of my anxiety was gone, freeing up space for other wonderful things

(see my comments below). For a lot of us, drinking leads to shenanigans that take up a lot of time and mental space. Not drinking meant no drunk texts, being able to find my car, no broken or missing phones, no sluggishness reminding me that I overdid it, no “write off days” when I was doing just enough to get through the day, no hair of the dog, and no anxiety. The absence of that ragtag posse of symptoms freed up so much space in my life. And, here’s the thing. When I took out all that negative, the empty space left behind just automatically felt positive. Because I was feeling better in general, sometimes I found productive ways to fill that space. Sometimes I just watched TV. Either way, instead of feeling bad about all those things and going into a shame spiral, I felt good about being a badass and taking control of my life. I’m going to call that a fame spiral. More money Drinks are expensive when you add up the after-work Wednesday cocktails, my Friday and Saturday at-home pregame routine, and then some drinks on the town, and why not throw in a round for my friends? To my sober surprise, I was easily spending more than $400 per month in alcohol. And after one month booze-free, I had saved as much as my car payment, a really amazing feeling. Those savings have really come in handy. Read on.

the business dinner was actually just a way to extend work discussion into the night. Cutting alcohol meant less social activities for a while because I wasn’t confident that I could go hang out with friends and coworkers and not drink. The temptation and the habit would be too strong. And the thought gave me anxiety, which I figured was a trigger. I waited it out until I knew I was steadfast in my sobriety and instead found productive ways to keep myself busy. Now I’m enjoy going out sober and actually remembering everything about everything. When I’m ready to go, I go. No more waiting around for something good to happen while I have one more because let’s face it, if you have to drink for it to be fun, it’s not. WITHIN 90 DAYS I started looking better My complexion cleared up, my face looked refreshed, and my eyes were brighter. I lost weight without changing my diet (mostly water weight, probably) and felt like exercising more, and since I had more non-drinking free time, I started going to the gym. Looking better and feeling better made me want to look even better and feel even better. #FameSpiral (This is now a thing.)

Less social activity (More “me” time) Since college, social settings and alcohol were a dynamic duo in my life, never one without the other. Even the corporate setting I was in this time last year, booze was a part of the culture of business dinners, after work drinks with colleagues, and nightcaps to take the edge off of a stressful day. There were a lot of these as part of the culture. In some settings, I’d have another drink because the party was lame, I wasn’t getting any attention at the bar (#realtalk, #smh), or OutClique.org | 13

I was motivated I was feeling inspired and creative again and started dabbling in old habits like writing and photography. I realized how much I enjoyed those old friends. I took my casual hobbies to the next level and started planning how to turn my Instagram into a portfolio and how to get back into a constructive writing regimen. I didn’t know it then, but all of that was a springboard to where I am today creating content for clients and writing regularly as evidenced by this very article. WITHIN 6+ MONTHS I was on fire About 6 months in, I started feeling passionate about living the fullest life possible. I took a clear look at my life, the clean reality I had come to know, understand, and appreciate these past few months. I not only realized that it was a good life, but also there were still parts of it I didn’t love. And because of that, I’d previously been numbing myself with booze. Without the drink, I was able to literally pinpoint the things that I didn’t love. I didn’t want to fix a drink and forget about

my responsibilities. Eventually, I was able to shift my focus to the things I actually did love. I started planning how to get a bit more of those things in my life, and redesigning myself around them entirely. A couple of months later, I started planning my new life. Later, I quit my corporate job, moved to Miami, and started my own business. I’ve never been happier in my life. I’m grossly oversimplifying that last part, but the point is this, I took a big risk moving to Miami to design a life that I love. I wouldn’t be here today, looking and feeling better than I ever have. I am loving my life for the first time in a long time, and all because I had stopped drinking. This is obviously a personal choice and I’m not preaching that you should adopt a booze-free lifestyle. But, if you’re up for a little experiment, I’d like to challenge you to cut out alcohol for 30 days and take notes about the differences you notice in your life, your health, your bank account, your belly, and your brain. I’d love to hear about your experience so find me on Instagram @JoeyGoes_Mia or at JoeyLeslie.Life and let me know how it goes.

CELEBRATE THE HOLIDAYS WITH

ALAN CUMMING

F

By Denny Patterson

rom Broadway’s Cabaret to CBS’s The Good Wife, Alan Cumming is a man of many talents. He acts, he sings, he dances, he writes – there’s not much he can’t do. On December 17, The Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida welcomes Cumming as he headlines their one-night only, holiday concert at Hard Rock Live at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Hollywood. This festive spectacular will feature an evening of music and magic with the perfect blend of love and laughter to celebrate the diverse traditions of the holiday season. Tickets and more information can be found at www.GayMensChorusOfSouthFlorida.org. I received the pleasure of chatting with Cumming about the upcoming concert, in addition to other projects, and how he celebrates the most wonderful time of the year.

You are headlining the The Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida holiday concert. That must be quite exciting for you. Yes, I am looking forward to it very much. I look forward to coming back to Florida and doing this concert with some incredible people. What do you hope to take away from this experience? I hope to have fun and have a nice concert where we can all laugh and remember the Christmas spirit. I want to meet lots of new people and have drinks, laugh, and have a great time. What can audiences expect? It’s a Christmas concert, a holiday spectacular, so a lot of holiday songs. A few from my own repertoire, but mostly holiday songs. Some with old traditional arrangements, others a little more spiced up. We’re just going to keep the audience guessing. What are the holidays typically like for you? I usually go up to my house in the country in New York state and spend the holidays and New Year’s there with a bunch of friends and family. I like to get away from my work and career and have some down time to relax and spend it with people I love. Last year, I did a New Year’s Eve concert in Park City, Utah, and that was quite unusual. 18 | OutClique.org

What is your favorite holiday film? How the Grinch Stole Christmas. I absolutely love that film, and I am actually singing, “Where Are You Christmas” in this concert. What other songs will you be covering at this concert? Am I allowed to say? If you want to. I understand if you would rather keep it a secret. Let’s keep it a secret. It’ll be a surprise. Fair enough. How is your husband Grant doing? He’s good, thank you. Have you and Grant worked on any projects together lately? A book we did together just came out not too long ago. You and Grant worked on a book together? What is the book about? It’s called The Adventures of Honey & Leon. It’s a children’s book based on our living in the East Village and having two dogs. They follow their dads around the world since they travel so much for work. The dogs take it upon themselves to follow them and check up on them. You and Grant have extremely busy lives and

schedules. What do you think is the key to making your relationship a success? I think we are very different people and we have our own lives. We have a healthy understanding that it’s important for us to have our own lives, but we check in with each other all the time. We are very good at communicating. We just get on incredibly well and laugh a lot and we genuinely like each other. We have been together for 13-14 years now, and it just keeps getting better and better. We keep things exciting. Our lives are quite exciting and dynamic, and I think that has also helped our relationship. I know you said in the past that you would like to adopt a child, but your schedule was way too hectic at the time. Is adoption still on the table for you? No. Well, I’m still going to ask this because I am curious. If you did have a child, what is the most important lesson or value you would teach them? [Laughs] You still went in with this question even though I said no. Well, I would teach them kindness. That’s not just for our child, but it’s for anyone. I don’t believe there is ever a situation in the world that doesn’t get better as a result from kindness. Just go into the world with an open heart and kindness, and you’ll be alright.

Fantastic. Let’s chat about your other work for a bit. Are there any projects you are currently working on? Right now, I am doing a new TV series on CBS called Instinct, which is sort of a cop show, but the difference is, I’m a professor who went into academia, but I was a CIA spy. I am being lured back by the NYPD to help solve certain murders. I drive a motorbike and I’m gay. I have a husband. This is the first ever network TV drama to have a gay character in a leading role, ever. So, it’s been great. It’s hardcore with long days, but I’m enjoying it. Other than that, I opened a bar in the East Village called Club Cumming about a month ago. How would you say you are constantly growing as a performer? I think by doing other things like writing books and other stuff. I have learned that the more authentic you are in life and the more honest and open you are as a person, that definitely helps. I find that I get better at it and I’m more willing to be open and vulnerable in the stories I tell and the songs I perform. As an actor and performer, I am evolving by being completely authentic. What keeps you motivated? Just life. I want to have fun and learn more. I want to be happy. My lust for life is what keeps me getting up in the morning.

SEARCHING FOR GIFTS? By Rev. Patrick Rogers, MDiv.

As a pastor, people sometimes tell me that they are “searching for God.” My response is “God is not lost.” My favorite print cartoon has a homeowner answering the front door to discover two religious door knockers and recruiters who ask the question, “Have you found Jesus?” with Jesus seen hiding in the person’s living room behind the window curtains. In the Old Testament, the Israelites, upon their exodus from Egypt, spent 40 years in the desert and wilderness searching for food, water, and the Promised Land. David searched for a way to overcome a “giant” obstacle. In the New Testament, we find the Syrophoenician Woman searching for Jesus and Zacchaeus searching for just the right tree to climb to see and talk with Jesus. In secular music we sing, “I’ve been searching for a long time,” “I’ve been looking for love in all the wrong places,” and if you are single like me, you may be searching for a boyfriend, girlfriend, husband, or wife. During the holidays, the quests intensify as we begin the search for the perfect holiday gift for our loved ones, and the perfect holiday tree. We search for a parking space at the mall. We 24 | OutClique.org

search for the right ingredients for that special holiday meal. But it just doesn’t stop. Even in the Christmas story at the end of the season, we find Joseph and Mary seeking for a place to stay, only to discover that there is no room at the inn. Often, life feels like a spiritual, “Where’s Waldo?” It may feel like we spend our entire lives searching. The answer to our search is reflected in the movie, The Wizard of Oz. At the end of Dorothy’s journey through the barrage of obstacles in her path, her enlightenment comes from the disciple named “Glinda” the Good Witch. Dorothy learns that she had the power all along. Those ruby red slippers are symbolic of the power and presence of the divine in her life. They had been present with her all along. And I

love the cast of characters and the diversity of the community around her and how that added to her journey.

divine within her. Her search for God is over as she says yes to God within. It isn’t the witch who is baptized by the water, it is Dorothy.

Most people don’t remember the exact last words of the Wicked Witch of the West as she melts away. The sound is muddled (or should I say puddled?). “Oh, what a world! What a world! Who would have thought a good little girl like you could destroy my wickedness! Oh! Look out! Look out! I'm going! Oh! Oh!”

Back to the other good book. We find that after Joseph and Mary’s search, they also found God was with them then, and especially in the stable. It was there that the world’s Christmas present was delivered.

The witch represents Dorothy’s doubts and fears that she allowed to rule her life. The wickedness was the influence of humanity and society that led her to feel powerless. Yet it is Dorothy who tosses the cleansing waters onto those limitations. Dorothy says yes to the

At the church I serve, this year’s Advent and Christmas theme is “Be the Presence.” But the presents we can give the world this holiday season is to know and believe it. Be the gift of hope, peace, joy, and love! Those presents are received, and it is okay to re-gift! Happy Holidays!

A LITTLE KINDNESS GOES A LONG WAY By Dr. Beau A. Nelson, DBH, LCSW

M

y husband and I enjoy a good cruise. I’ve just taken my longest vacation in many years to enjoy an eleven day cruise in the Mediterranean. It’s been a good rest and a nice chance to see new places and do something I also enjoy, people watching. Nothing like being on a ship with 2,100 other people to gain some thoughts on human behavior. A take away we have both had is that a little kindness goes a long way.

There was a particular incident that we have both talked about as sad, and lightheartedly laughed at, that my husband observed one morning at the buffet on board, or as I like to think of it, the cattle call of scarce resources. It is amazing to watch people shuffle into the dining room and wander up to the buffet. It is a combination of the aimless and the selfabsorbed. One group is of the lost souls staring blankly at a buffet loaded with food. One will stand right in front of the bacon for ten minutes oblivious to the people standing behind them, just to turn around and walk right into you without even a slice of delicious bacon on their plate. The other part, more disturbing, although not perhaps as annoying, is the entitlement of cruisers (not in the gay bar sense of the word) and the poor way they

treat the staff on the boat. From the behavior of some of the passengers, you would suppose they think of themselves as the Queen of England and that they paid a million bucks for this cruise! So the story was related to me by my husband. One morning a petite older woman with jet black hair, glasses and wearing a blouse and stirrup pants, walks up to the prepared egg station. For those who may not know, it is staffed by an assistant chef who makes eggs to order or omelettes. This woman walks up and asks for one fresh fried egg. Bear in mind, the eggs are set-up as two already cracked eggs in a bowl. So the genteel man behind the sneeze guard puts some oil in the pan and then she scolds him “not that much oil, are OutClique.org | 31

you crazy.” So he apologizes and wipes the pan, then adds just a little oil and she responds, “You can use more than that” and he adds some more oil. At this point the chef is obviously uncomfortable, but still polite and smiling; customer service can get ugly! He goes to fish out one egg, with a spoon, from the pre-prepared cracked eggs that are in a bowl (again there are two) and if you have ever tried this, you know it is not easy. She gets angry and says “Jesus Christ, just put them both in!” He complies and then she turns to my husband and says, “Can you believe this,” exasperated by her experience as if the chef was torturing her, to which my husband replied, “A little kindness goes a long way.” That went over like a lead balloon and elicited a response of “humph,” then she got her eggs and stormed off. Needless to say we both were taken aback by her demanding attitude. We have, however, had many laughs at her expense, with “Jesus Christ, this or that” when we were reminded of her behavior. For in fact, while a sad commentary on human kind, laughter is sometimes the only response. Every day we all have a chance to make a difference on this planet. Too often we think that a successful life is one that is marked by large and well-known accomplishments and that this is what “makes a real difference” in the world. I would challenge this point of view with the alternative thought, that life is more about the little kindnesses that are shown each day and that is what truly keeps the world spinning. It can be a smile, a nice hello, a thank you, or a shoulder to cry on when someone is struggling. If you think back in your life at the people who made a difference for you, was it because they did something superhuman or huge? Perhaps there are some big things that are memorable, but isn’t it the hug

from a loved one, a kind word, a funny text, or a supportive encouraging word, when repeated, makes life more pleasant and bearable than it would otherwise be? Take a moment to look not to receive, but to give. Don’t focus on what others do to you but what you add to the worldwide consciousness of kindness and compassion. Small drops of rain can make an ocean. A few dollars saved faithfully over many years makes a fortune. Take a step and share what you can with others and make this world a better place. Misery loves company, but happiness has more fun. You choose for yourself.

YOUR PROPERTY AND YOU By Marty Kiar

Our office receives numerous calls every year asking us to confirm property tax exemptions on the recent tax bills. The Property Appraiser’s Office does not set your tax rates or collect property taxes. We simply assess property for tax purposes and grant tax-saving exemptions to qualified individuals. The property tax bills are mailed by the Broward County Tax Collector’s Office each year to more than 459,000 property owners. All qualified Florida residents are entitled to a Homestead Exemption on their homes, condominiums, co-op apartments, and certain mobile home lots. To qualify for Homestead Exemption, you must own and make the property your permanent residence on January 1 of the year in which you are applying for this valuable exemption. Pursuant to Florida Statute, all assessments and exemptions are based upon the status of the property on January 1. If you purchased or made the property your permanent residence in 2017 and have not applied for Homestead Exemption, you can apply for 2018 exemptions at any time – there is no need to wait until 2018. You can easily apply online at www.bcpa.net or at one of our many outreach events. New Home Purchase in 2017 If you purchased your home in 2017, the tax bill you received from the Broward County Tax Collector was for the 2017 tax year. If the previous owners of your new home were entitled to and received Homestead Exemption or any other exemption on January 1, 2017, you may have inherited their exemptions on your 2017 property tax bill. Florida Statutes require these exemptions be removed for 2018

and the Save Our Homes Value be brought up to the 2018 Just Value. This will often result in an increase in your 2018 property taxes so it is important you apply for 2018 Homestead Exemption and any other exemptions you may qualify for. Your new 2018 Homestead Exemption will be reflected next year on all 2018 property records, notices and tax bills. Should you have any questions regarding your new exemption, please stop by our monthly outreach event or call me directly. The Broward County Property Appraiser’s Community Outreach Department is at The Pride Center at Equality Park (2040 N Dixie Highway, Wilton Manors, FL 33305) on the 2nd Tuesday of each month between 10:00am12:00pm to assist residents with exemptions and other property related matters. If my office can ever be of assistance to you, please do not hesitate to contact me at 954.357.6904 or by email at MartyKiar@bcpa.net. Take care, Marty Kiar

CIRQUE DREAMS HOLIDAZE’S

FRANK VOMERO BROWARD CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS

By Denny Patterson

T

he iconic holiday stage spectacular, Cirque Dreams Holidaze, will light up South Florida’s December season at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts as part of its 10th Anniversary National Tour. From the mind of Neil Goldberg, this one-of-a-kind show takes celebrating the holidays to a whole new level. Families of all ages are invited to celebrate the most wonderful time of the year while watching twenty of the world’s best acts fly, balance, and stretch their imaginations. In addition, 11-year-old Diana Pombo, who recently gained national recognition on NBC’s World of Dance, will be joining the fun. This is Miami native Frank Vomero’s first year with Cirque Dreams Holidaze. A performer and fitness instructor, Vomero is thrilled to perform and showcase his talents at the Broward Center. While living in New York City, Vomero studied under jazz dance master, Luigi. He was later seen in Luigi: A Tribute at Symphony Space. Some of his other regional credits include La Cage aux Folles, West Side Story, A Chorus Line, and 42nd Street.

This will be his first national tour. Why don’t you start off by telling me more about the show. What exactly is Cirque Dreams Holidaze? The show is a wonderful, holiday spectacular with over 20 acts and 30 performers. We are also bringing in Diana Pombo from World of Dance for our Fort Lauderdale performance. It’s super exciting to have another native artist in the show. This is just a huge holiday extravaganza for all. Family, friends, I’m just glad to be able to perform in my hometown of Fort Lauderdale and be able to share this show with everyone who sees it. What is your involvement with the show? I guess you can call me the ringleader of the show. I have my own act towards the end of Act 1, but I help thread the story together, bouncing from act to act. A lot focuses on the performers, but since it’s Broadway musical inspired, there’s singing, dancing, and movement throughout the stage. We are all playing many hats and making magic come alive. OutClique.org | 41

So, it’s basically like a circus? It’s a Broadway holiday circus, yes. Although there is no solid storyline, it’s more like a cohesive celebration of the holidays.

change act that is super intriguing to me. The actors pull on and off two to three dozen costumes within seconds. And it’s not just a shirt, this is full costume, full dresses, and full tuxes. The costumes are so colorful and beautiful. There’s so much happening on stage, you don’t know where to look. I will be in the background dancing and interacting with other characters. We help make this performance come alive. It’s a busy and fun production number.

Audiences can expect quite a bit then. Oh, yes! That’s really what the show prides itself in. There is something for everybody no matter what background you come from, no matter what you enjoy. You can go to the theatre every weekend, or this could be your very first time. No matter what, audiences can expect to be wowed.

I heard this show has some pretty elaborate costumes. There are over 300 beautiful costumes dazzled with sequins and crystals. Colorful headdresses, hats, and just anything you can think of. We could probably parade across the stage in these costumes and the audience would be as equally impressed to be honest.

Besides your own, which act do you enjoy the most? There are so many to choose from and I was actually having this conversation with somebody the other day. There is this quick

And to be in our rehearsal studio space down in Pompano Beach, the costume warehouse where everything is made, there is so much that is put into these pieces. Neil Goldberg, the creator of Cirque Dreams, has a say on

What kind of other acts are there? You can find anything from strength acts to aerial, and roller skating to jump ropes. We also have three wonderful and talented Broadway caliber singers to help narrate the stories.

every rhinestone that goes on these costumes, which is so wonderful. He is really passionate about what he shares with the audience. Did you audition for the show or were you approached and asked to be in it? Kind of both. I was initially approached by Jen Sierra-Grobbelaar, who works with Cirque Dreams, when I was working on another project. She was in the audience. She said they needed to find an actor, particularly someone local since the director, Neil Goldberg, is local, so we would be able to work with one another before heading up to rehearse in Rhode Island. I came in and started the process of meeting with Neil and the board before they asked anything artistically from me. It was nice to speak with them beforehand and run over ideas and then afterwards. They sent me home with the material and I had to really commit and sit down and memorize and understand what they were asking for. The next day, I came in and presented to them what I had come up with. They were excited and decided to move forward.

What do you hope to gain from this experience? I hope to get an incredible amount of experience and knowledge by being around so many different cultures under one roof. So many people collaborating like this is really exciting. And being a professionally trained actor and dancer who does musical theatre, that realm of familiarity is there, but there are new aspects to be gained by being with gymnasts and others with their unique talents. I hope to stretch my skillset. What do you hope audiences will take away from this show? Just remember that no matter who they are or what they are, the tradition of the holidays is what’s important. This show brings joy to the holiday season, regardless of what beliefs you may have. It’s just a fun, entertaining two hour production where I hope people will not think about anything else that is possibly bothering them. With all that is currently happening in the world, I hope this show can be a distraction and make you smile. OutClique.org | 43

Have there been any challenges you’ve encountered? The most challenging part for me is my act. It is very audience participation driven and I will not really have an audience until we open. The rehearsal process has been very helpful and tedious, but there are elements just like any live performance situation, that have you interact with the audience one-on-one. That is going to be another level that I won’t be able to experience and figure out until it’s happening. What is Diana Pombo like? I actually got to meet her a couple of weeks ago when we did a publicity engagement. She’s on tour with World of Dance right now and won’t be with us until we get to the Broward Center. She is a lovely, young, and vibrant girl who is ridiculously talented. She has so much to offer. Not just in the dance world. Speaking of the Broward Center, will this be your first time performing there? I have worked with Slowburn before, being on the Amaturo stage last season in Aida, and I will return to the Abdo New River Room doing Disaster: The Musical, then back to the Amaturo for Memphis after Cirque Dreams Holidaze closes. This is my first time on the main stage. How exciting is it to perform at the Broward Center? It’s so exciting! It has been a dream to go literally from one stage to the next. I’m living at the Broward Center for a solid four months. Since this is your first national tour, what do you look forward to the most about it? Being able to travel and see all of these different cities that I wouldn’t have much reason to visit. Within our own country, we have so many different cultures and variations that many don’t even know exist. We are literally a melting pot, and I look forward to seeing these places and meeting the people. 44 | OutClique.org

What would you say is your favorite part about performing? The reaction the audience leaves with. The purpose of performing is to get into people’s emotions. Whether they be happy, sad, or whatever feelings, we allow them to feel a variety of emotions. Just seeing their reaction leaving the theatre is my favorite part of performing. Cirque Dreams Holidaze has become quite an annual tradition. Do you think it will continue for another 10 years? I mean, it continues to grow every year. It adds more and more because that is what the audience is asking for, and that’s very exciting. Will you be involved with next year’s performances? That is up to Mr. Goldberg and my debut performance on the stage. Assuming all goes well, I intend to join the family. I don’t believe the production company would invest so much time in their performers if they didn’t want to build long-lasting relationships with them. There are some people who have been with the company at least 20 years . That’s a testament within itself.

What are the holidays typically like for you? Honestly, I am usually working over the holidays. I grew up in a close-knit Italian family and Christmas was always big. But in adult life, I am usually working. It’s joyful for me and I don’t mind it. It’s nice to provide something for an audience whose holiday tradition is coming to a show.

What do you like to do in your downtime when you aren’t performing? I love my dog and I love animals. I am also a fitness instructor. I thoroughly enjoy teaching. And I love going to the beach. Cooking is a fun hobby of mine. If I have nothing else to do, I am usually cooking.

What is a holiday memory you will always cherish? I am just going to be so cliché and tacky with this one. It’s definitely ice skating in Rockefeller Center. It’s something you always hope to see. There are so many things on TV about it. You have some idea, but things are way different when you experience it first-hand.

Anything in particular on your list for Santa? Hm, I wouldn’t mind a new pair of tap shoes.

Cirque Dreams Holidaze will run for one week: Tuesday, December 26 – Sunday, December 30, 2017. Tickets range between $29.50 - $69.50 with $123.00 for Latam Airlines Club Level tickets and $99.00 VIP tickets. THE SEMINOLE HARD ROCK CASINO By Steven O. Evans, PhD

T

he present and future are meeting in typical Hard Rock fashion at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood.

For more than a decade, the resort has been one of South Florida’s top destinations for gaming, live big-name entertainment and the free-spirited lifestyle that distinguish Hard Rock properties throughout North America, the Caribbean, and Mexico. The Seminole Tribe of Florida and Hard Rock International will up the ante in the summer of 2019 with the addition of a 35-story, guitar-shaped tower that will

48 | OutClique.org

bring Seminole Hard Rock Hotel’s number of guest rooms to nearly 1,300. Undoubtedly, the neon-blue tower, already more than six years in the design and construction phase, will be the centerpiece of the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino experience. But until then, there is still plenty to experience, from the resort’s plethora of bars and restaurants, to the Rock Spa, and to the guest rooms. In short, if you can’t find something to do here, you aren’t looking hard enough.

Begin at the L Bar. Every resort needs a great lobby bar and at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, it’s L Bar. It opened in 2015 and features upbeat live music. It also offers outstanding signature cocktails such as Queens Park Swizzle (Ron Zacapa rum, mint, bitters and lime), Passion Flower (passion fruit, lemon juice and Ketel One), and its Rosemary Dirty Martini (the original reimagined with vodka or gin, rosemary, a garlic-infused olive brine, and vermouth). Its location, within just a few steps of the casino action, has given L Bar a terrific local and guest fan base, particularly for its tequila and mezcal menu. Each is an intriguing part of the Menu Secreto – a secret, have-to-ask-forit cocktail menu. “Part of the fun of L Bar is discovery,” said Justin Wyborn, Vice president of Food & Beverage for Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. “You can plan for some amazing music, stumble on a great new DJ, find a band you don’t yet know, listen to an artist you love who is suddenly playing three feet from you, or acquaint yourself with a menu of specialty cocktails. L Bar is a place where your night out takes an exciting and unexpected turn.’’ Where to go after L Bar? The resort has a variety of restaurants, including the great Council Oak Steak & Sea Food, but the culinary “must-go’’ is Kuro.

50 | OutClique.org

True to its Hard Rock roots, Kuro is the resort’s 240-seat Japanese restaurant that features a deep menu of contemporary artisanal dishes using locally sourced and imported ingredients from Japan. Kuro opened in March 2015 at a reported cost of $12 million and has been worth every penny. Kuro’s menu includes sushi, sashimi, and outstanding land and sea entrees. Among them is a thin-sliced Japanese Wagyu Beef served on a hot stone (you cook it yourself). Kuro’s Sake menu, not surprisingly is one of the most extensive you’ll find in South Florida. The staff also is top of the line. Each server knows the menu inside-out and can offer recommendations based on each guest’s palate. Each guest room at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino measures a minimum of a comfortable 450 square feet. If you’re looking for something a bit more special, go for the 550 square-foot CBGB King Suite (named after the legendary music venue in New York City) that features a King bed and lounge area great for entertaining. Much of the resort’s shopping plaza has been removed to make room for the $1.5 billion guitar tower and a new shopping and entertainment plaza, but don’t fret, the resort’s Hard Rock Shops are still open inside

the Hard Rock Cafe for caps, shirts, and everything “Love All Serve All.’’ When it opens, the 450-foot guitar tower will be home to elaborate casino complexes, including a Hard Rock Casino that will nearly double its current size with 3,267 slot machines and 178 table games such as blackjack and baccarat, plus a new 18,000-square foot poker room. The expansion will also include 60,000 square feet of new retail and restaurant space and a $100 million redesigned and completely rebuilt Hard Rock Live venue with 7,000 seats in a theater-style configuration. The expansion will include 806 additional guestrooms and suites, with 638 in the guitar hotel tower, where each guestroom will be 525 square feet and larger. An additional 168 guestrooms and suites will be located in a seven story Pool Tower that will flank the pool complex. Other amenities will include restaurants, lounges, a business center and a 41,000-square foot spa. At the base of the guitar tower will be a 10acre pool complex highlighted by the “Bora

Bora Experience,” with private villas surrounded entirely by water and waterfalls. The villas will offer luxury accommodations with private plunge pools and butler service. Chickee-cabanas will dot the banks of the lagoon-style resort pool, which will also include beach club dining and walls of multilevel waterfalls. The 5,500-seat Hard Rock Live arena will be razed in March 2018, and replaced with a state-of-the-art 7,000-seat Hard Rock Live in a theater-style configuration. The new Hard Rock Live will house its own television studio and broadcast center to produce and televise awards shows and other events. It will also open in mid-2019. In the interim, a full schedule of concerts, comedy shows and other events will take place in a newly constructed venue in the northwest corner of the Seminole Hard Rock site, adjacent to the existing poker room and meeting facilities. Once the new Hard Rock Live venue opens, the temporary performance hall will become a 37,000-square foot ballroom.

4 WAYS TO STAY FIT DURING THE HOLIDAYS

By Bobby Jackson BA, CSCS

E

veryone knows that consistency is the key to success with a fitness and nutrition program. It takes consistent effort, day after day, week after week, before you can expect your body to show measurable results. Unfortunately, factors like varying work schedules, frequent travel, and especially the winter holiday season can make that quite challenging. That’s why I have laid out the 4 Best Ways to Stay Fit During the Holidays!

1

PORTION CONTROL

The hardest thing to do during the holiday season is avoiding unhealthy eating. This time of year is famous for all of the calorie dense, sugar packed foods that we know will keep us from our health and fitness goals. However, it can also be a great time to “recharge” our minds and refocus on our goals and the reasons for why we want, or need, to achieve them.

2

Unless specifically prohibited by a doctor, I always tell my clients to enjoy themselves this time of year but to apply one simple rule to your nutrition - portion control. Eat the cookie, try the candy, just don’t over indulge. If we use moderation, we can still get the mental satisfaction from a few of our favorite holiday junk foods without letting our progress slip.

GUEST PASSES

Traveling during the holidays is a major factor that causes people to fall off their health and fitness programs. Being away from your regular gym can make it easy to mentally detach from your training. A better way to approach your holiday traveling should be to finally have an opportunity to try out a new gym, studio, or fitness class. There are several ways to find local gyms and fitness classes in your new area, many of which will offer reasonable 52 | OutClique.org

prices on guest passes or short-term holiday specials. Our favorite search tool is the MindBody mobile app. MindBody even allows you to search specifically for local deals, book sessions, and pay, all from the convenience and security of your phone. A new workout environment or program is a great way to add some excitement to your fitness journey, keep you on track during your holiday travel, and is the perfect way to discover fun new styles of training.

3

WORKOUT EFFICIENCY

Most of my clients who can’t stay active during the holidays attribute it to not having any spare time. Whether it’s the travel time or the time spent preparing for incoming family and friends, it can be hard to set time aside for a workout. The most effective time tends to be first thing in the morning. No matter what

4

time you squeeze your workouts in, try to make them as efficient as possible. My strategy is to do full-body routines, focused on large compound movements so I can get the most out of even the shortest workout. This will also dramatically cut down the stress of rushing to and from the gym when time is limited.

STAY ON SCHEDULE

With so many variables in our schedule during the holidays, we should try to keep control of as many of them as possible. First and foremost, sleep. If we can continue getting our usual amount of sleep, as close to our regular sleep schedule as possible, it can be a huge help in maintaining our productivity level, even in

vacation mode. The other schedule we need to try to maintain should be the times of day that we normally eat. Don’t let yourself get wrapped up in vacation activities and begin missing your breakfast or lunch, that’s when we end up overeating at dinner to subconsciously make up for the missed meals earlier in the day.

It does not require an immense amount of work to maintain or even increase the physical progress that we have made throughout the year as we go through this long winter holiday season. With the right planning and a little extra attention to time-management, there should be no reason to see any significant setback in our health and fitness. Just make sure to end each day with a general plan of success for the next day (wake-up time, breakfast, workout time, etc.) and get up each morning ready to execute that plan one step at a time.

KYBELLA. WHY WE LOVE IT! does not require updates as the fat is destroyed and will never return. “WHAT DO YOU MEME” CARD GAME FOR ADULTS

Where to Buy It: UncommonGoods.com Price: $20.00- $58.00 This gift is perfect for the classy drinker in your life. Forget the ice, we really are serving “on the rocks.” These innovative soapstone cubes were designed by Andrew Hellman who was a fan of single malt scotch. However, he wanted to discover a way to chill his spirits without diluting them. After much research, Hellman came up with the idea of using natural soapstone to chill drinks due to its softness, the fact that it will not scratch the glass, and its unique ability to retain temperature for extended periods of time. Whiskey stones keep the drink at a perfect 50 degrees, whereas ice can make the whiskey too cold and ruin the flavor. Simply freeze the stones, add three to your next drink, and let stand for five minutes. The gift set includes a set of six whiskey stones and two sipping glasses.

DON’T LET THE GRINCH STEAL YOUR CHRISTMAS OR HANUKKAH BBB SERVING SOUTHEAST FLORIDA AND THE CARIBBEAN

re you looking for that special gift for your family, friends, colleagues and most importantly, the partner with whom you share your life? If you are like me, that is not always easy. Fortunately, we have some great businesses in the neighborhood to assist you in finding that perfect gift. One of my favorite gifts of all times was a group spa trip with friends. There are many spas that can provide a wonderful experience for an individual or a group. Check out spas in your area by talking with friends, checking them out on sites like BBB, Yelp, and Google. Then stop in to visit the ones offering the best option for the type of services you are seeking, like location, price, ambience, and reputation. Also, check to make sure the spa is able to

62 | OutClique.org

accommodate several guests if you include more than one or two people. Ask about the training and licensing of people working at the spa. You can check licensing requirements at bit.ly/2zVDGBX. If the gift will not be used immediately, it is smart to find a spa with a proven track record that will be around for years to come. If you are providing a certificate, check any conditions for use and the length of time it may be used, so your gift will be used and enjoyed. Lastly, so your guest does not have to worry about a tip, include the tip as part of the gift. Maybe you are an avid Project Runway groupie (like me) and want to have a gown, shirt, tie, or suit made just for your loved one. Luckily, at Rex Fabrics in Miami, they have every fabric

you can imagine and will tailor the perfect fit. Why not start a new holiday tradition and take that special person in your life out for a great lunch and a trip to Rex Fabric to get that once in a lifetime gift. (www.RexFabrics.com) Since moving to Florida from Washington DC, I had to learn about the plants and landscaping in a new climate. If you need some help, or just lack a green thumb, how about giving someone the gift of a landscape makeover. You can find landscape designers at go.bbb. org/2yyxRpY. Look for a business that is licensed, has experience in the type of project to be done, and offers that design esthetic for the recipient of your gift. Never pay the full amount for a project up front. Always retain a payment to ensure satisfaction of the project even when it is a gift. You can check licensing requirements at bit.ly/21aBGsO. If your budget does not permit a landscape makeover, stop in to GardenWorks in Oakland Park, or another nursery, to pick up a plant or a unique garden accessory. As a kid, when my mother said she wanted a new sofa for Christmas, it was not something I could appreciate. Now, the idea of new furniture or the opportunity for a designer to download the image in my head to create the house of my dreams sounds pretty good. Southeast Florida has many unique furniture stores like MH2G and designers like Puschendorf Interiors. Finding the right business will help you wow your partner and is something you will both share in the years to come. Many interior designers will help design not only a look, but also a one of a kind piece of furniture. Visit the Department of Professional Business Regulation to check on the license of any interior designer you are considering for a job (bit.ly/2AHE6sN). Also check on their report at bbb.org/South-East-Florida. Saying you are special with a piece of jewelry is another option to consider this holiday season. Many jewelers will design something for you that is unique and one of a kind. Most businesses will not permit the return of custom jewelry so remember this as you

consider options. If you are making a high end purchase, do your research on the business and the process and qualification of the person setting the price of the stone or metal. BBB offers complete tips for you at go.bbb. org/2drBxPC. So, if your budget is not letting you splurge, or you are not feeling too creative, here are a few tips to remember this holiday season.

1. Gift Receipts: Always ask for a gift receipt. This way the recipient can return or exchange a gift if it’s not just right. 2. Gift Cards: Gift cards are a quick and easy gift. Here are a few tips to ensure the recipient is able to use the card without problems. Buy gift cards from reputable locations. Read the fine print and avoid cards with fees and conditions that make use difficult or that have expiration dates that may prohibit use. Verify that the protective stickers and the PIN on the back of the card are not exposed. Be sure to provide a gift card receipt. 3. Warranty Information: Inquire about the

return policy before purchasing. Also, be sure to pass along any information about returns, exchanges, repairs, and warranties to the person who will use the item.

4. Research: Read product reviews, check BBB.org for Business Profiles, look at the sales flyers and ads, compare prices, look for early promotions, and “flash sales.” When ordering online, always take the cost of shipping into account as you compare options. 5. Charity Disclosure: Check out give.org to

find BBB accredited charities that have fully disclosed information to BBB Wise Giving Alliance. Although participation is voluntary, you may want to be cautious of charities that don’t disclose requested information to BBB. If you want to give a charitable donation in the name of a loved one, find a charity that supports the cause important to the recipient that also cares enough about their reputation to meet appropriate standards.
