‘TIS THE SEASON FOR FIRST IMPRESSIONS By Kip Reynolds
S
o you’re looking to sell or refinance your home. Maybe you just want to increase the value of a recently purchased property or you bought bare-bones and want luxury. It’s possible and you can do much of it yourself with some simple tips that will really pay off. Begin by going through that mental list of “honey do” items and write them down. Then tackle the list. Dripping faucet? Shower that needs caulking? Squeaky hinges? Loose hinges? Homeowners often overlook many minor repairs, putting them off until later, but a prospective home buyer will notice quickly. First impressions are paramount when selling real estate and it’s often the little things that tip the scale. Realtors, property managers, and investors can tell you one thing for certain: a fresh coat of paint will revitalize any space. You don’t have to go bold. Neutral colors are best and help make a space look clean and updated. You can affordably purchase enough paint to cover every room of the house and buy all the supplies you need. So hit the home improvement store, invite some friends over for painting and pizza, and before you know it the job is done. Many homes need some updates and upgrades to help raise value. Be sure to ask your Realtor if a permit needs to be pulled before making any moves. Many tasks are mostly cosmetic like that gorgeous salmon-colored sink. You can even tackle minor electrical issues such as converting a non-grounded outlet to grounded. Change all those burnt out light bulbs too! Perhaps a closet system to give
your storage spaces a more modern flair. Clutter can make it difficult and distracting to sell your house. Cluttered cabinets, closets, floors, and even too much furniture can draw attention away from all the features that make your home valuable. Decluttering and organizing your living space shows that you’ve cared for the property and strong evidence of well utilized space. When it comes to adding value, clutter is not only a problem indoors but also outdoors. Walk or drive by your house and try to get a clear idea of what is lacking. Ask a friend or your Realtor for input on your “curb appeal.” Again, this is key for that first impression and really enhances a stronger perception of value. Rent a power washer for a long weekend. This will surely breathe new life into siding, bricks, tile roofs, sidewalks, and driveways. Plant flowers and shrubs, or purchase potted plants to beautify the front door or porch. Pull weeds, mow grass with nice edges along walkways. Consider a fresh color on the front door for that special pop to catch a buyer’s eye. Although the purchase of your home is likely one of the most exciting and challenging experiences of life, selling your home is just as tricky. If there is anything you should take from this article it’s first impressions mean everything to bringing value to your home. Be sure to protect your investment and seek the advice of a real estate professional to help you achieve the highest level of success and realize your home’s greatest potential. I wish you a happy holiday season and a fruitful new year.

THERE IS NOTHING LIKE A DAME By John M. Hayden
Photos Courtesy of Celebrity Impersonator Michael Walters as Dame Edna
I
“
f you can’t laugh at yourself, you’re missing the joke of the century.” -Dame Edna Everage
The fabulous frock. The bejeweled glasses. The attitude. Dame Edna rules her roost at the Monkey Bar at Georgie’s Alibi like none other. Faithful possums flock in Monday nights for music and comedy with no holds barred. The character was pioneered by Australian Barry Humphries back in the 1950s. In Fort Lauderdale, the iconic character is portrayed by Michael Walters. He’s celebrating a decade at the Monkey Bar, a room he says has become a home. “It’s fun for me. I still can’t believe it’s been ten years,” Michael said. Every Monday, a crowd of regulars and newbies pack the room for a comedy and broadway-style music. Now if you know the original Edna, you know she doesn’t sing much, and when she does it’s not great. “They’re there to see what I do with the character,” he told me. “Usually they’re in for a surprise. If you hear the real Dame Edna sing ‘It’s not pretty!’ It’s hideous.” Michael has expanded the character, letting us know more about Ms. Everage. A lot of people don’t know that Edna has three children and one that she never talks about because the baby girl was kidnapped by koalas. “Turns out that child was, in my world, Susan Boyle, and she has taken away the opportunity Edna had to become a world class singer.” That answers so many questions. “She put her family last. She left them behind and sought her own dream.” Michael hasn’t always been a Dame. “I’m a more rounded performer than people might think, and I’m not just talking about my [butt].” He’s been performing for 39 years, a proud Actor’s Equity member, and a Carbonell winner 08 | OutClique.com
for his role in Pirates of Penzance. Before Edna, he worked for a few years at Walt Disney World in some of their live productions, but doing three to four shows a day marching, waving, dancing, and yelling can take its toll. In his heart, he knew it wasn’t his true calling. “I’m not what you’d call a ‘corporate entertainer.’ I don’t fit in well with their mold of central casting,” he told me. He was looking for something more adult. “I’m somebody who’s likely to say something horribly offensive. Or at the very least, not PC. I despise PC culture. You have to laugh at the world or you go mad and spend your days looking for things to be offended by.” Eventually, Dame Edna worked her way into his life in Wilton Manors at a time he was ready to retire the character. “I was hosting a Dame Edna look-alike contest. Hosting it because they didn’t want me to enter it because they said it would look like you’re a ringer.” He made his way through the community and bar owners began to ask if he had a show. He didn’t, but he didn’t say that. He developed one on the fly. In the pre-Youtube® days, he had to track down videotapes and recordings of Edna’s shows. His voice was easily in the range and Michael
worked on the costume and mannerisms. “That was one of the things, when I started doing this, I was determined that I wanted to make this my own.” It was around this time that Michael met his partner of ten years Doug Michael Lucas, who is responsible for managing schedules, running the shows, and keeping Edna’s hair in showroom condition. “Without Doug, I would have retired this character ages ago. He keeps me centered, sane, and focused. We fight like cats and dogs, but every couple has their differences, especially when they work together.” By the time Edna was ready to run amok in Wilton Manors, Georgie’s Alibi was looking to expand its slate of entertainers. “[Alibi] is the founding flagship, that started live entertainment on The Drive.” The showroom got a makeover this fall, but Michael started when the room was even less conducive to a live performance. “I didn’t really have a stage. I had this little thing up there.” Now he has a room fit for the show and a loyal crowd that loves the show. If you’re new to Dame Edna, he has a warning: put down your phones. He’s putting on a show, not some background music. Some people have learned this the hard way. “I want you to be immersed in the experience of the theater. I don’t want you to be on Grindr® the entire night. I would grab their phone away from them and humiliate them in front of an audience.” He’s not trying to be mean, that may just be a side benefit. For him, it’s all about the quality of the show. “When they argue with me they lose. I have the microphone.” You also need to have a good sense of humor because even if you’re off your phone, you may still catch Edna’s eye and become a part of the act. “Believe me, I’ve pissed off a lot of people over the years in this room.” Remember, Edna’s quick wit and sharp tongue are what make Edna, Edna. “The funny thing is what they don’t know is if I ever thought I had hurt someone’s feelings, it would crush me. Getting a smile
out of people, that’s really important to me. We need to laugh now more than ever. If I can make that happen, I’ve done my job.” The show is two and a half hours, and it’s tough on Michael and Edna. “To stay in character, especially after a couple of [cocktails], is always a real hassle. It’s also murder on the voice. You don’t want to let people forget that they’re here to see something.” Michael is getting ready to hit the road for an international tour, but he loves coming back to the Monkey Bar at Georgie’s Alibi. “This is my therapy. This is also my happiness. Being in here for this long makes me realize how many friends I have in this community.” OutClique.com | 09
IS HAPPINESS ABOUNDING? By Steven O. Evans, PhD
A
“
s I sit down to write and think about this upcoming holiday season, I want to dedicate this issue to my dear friend, Dr. Angela Easterday-Holder, who suddenly passed earlier this year at the age of 52. At the time of her death, she was Chair and Professor of Music at Carson-Newman University in Jefferson City, TN.
I knew Angela when I lived in Lexington, KY and was the organist at our church. Yes, Angela had an amazing voice that captured the entire room. One Christmas I accompanied “Gesù, Bambino” for her. She sang above the entire Schantz pipe organ with her ability and enthusiasm. But it was Angela’s smile and spirit that left you a better person. She was one of the most joyful people I have ever met. She had a peace that passes understanding and a happiness that was contagious to everyone that knew her. It was also captured in her namesake, Easter-Day. Although she departed from this life in May 2019, her Facebook profile is still being filled with comments from those who miss her and cannot believe she is gone. She was known for asking, “Is happiness abounding?” After her death, many of her friends have made shirts with that saying emblazoned across the front and posted their photos to social media. That is what she wanted to be remembered for. Joy. This issue starts OutClique’s fourth year in print. I leave you with this, Dr. EasterdayHolder’s thought for your life, “Is happiness abounding?” May your holidays and all of 2020 be filled with joy, love, and peace. Happy holidays from all us at OutClique Magazine. Steven O. Evans, PhD

THIRD TIME’S A CHARM. RIGHT? By Eric Noel Roman
E
"
ric it's okay, you were one of eight hundred who tried. It does not matter that you didn't finish." Remarked my good friend Alan as I sat sobbing. It was September 15, 2018 and I was embarking on my second attempt to complete the Spartan Ultra Beast in Killington, Vermont. My first time was the same weekend of 2017 and I finished roughly thirty-two miles close to fifteen hours. This second try, I felt stronger, healthier, and confident I would finish. The race began in morning darkness and chilly. The race director's voice could be heard through a sound system explaining the rules, followed by the inspirational speech heard at every race. The speech finished and I darted off on the second try to this monster race. Lap one was roughly fifteen miles and was littered with all types of spartan obstacles, incredibly hard inclines, and the beloved transition area. Upon completing the first lap in about eight hours, I felt more confident than the year before, to the point I was talking trash. I left the transition point where I restocked my hydration pack with proper nutrition and a fresh change of clothes. I felt spectacular as I chatted with other racers pacing this mountain. I stopped regularly to absorb the views and heard my running mate call out my name. So I decided to slow down as he caught up. Not much longer our third member caught up. Three stooges walking together nearing three-quarters of the race. As we scaled down the side of a hill I saw Alan waiting for me. We approached him and noticed scissors in his hand. "I hate to do this, but I have to cut off your time chips fellas. I told you guys I was going to be waiting for you." At mile twenty-seven of thirty I was pulled off due to time constraint. This failure did not hit me hard because I slowed down to
help push other racers as well, as give emergency nutrition. I was proud to not finish 2018 because I was helping others. One year later, I returned to the same mountain for redemption. The scene was the exact same just colder and cloudier. This time I was fighting to keep my body temperature steady. I reached obstacles only to fail them due to the frozen state of my hands. I was running along the ridge of Killington Peak and the temperature was in the thirties. I was running in the clouds and lap one came to a miserable end. Suddenly I began to shiver uncontrollably and began to lose feeling in my feet and legs. Hello hypothermia. Needless to say, I gave up my time chip and walked into the lodging. I sat down and began to cry. This year was a redemption and I failed. However, this loss was different because I knew I could finish. I was prepared physically and mentally. Then the unexpected cold hit, and stopped me, with a sharp punch to my ego. After few days, I began to realize that I did not fail, I learned a lesson. Prepare for the unexpected. Failures are lessons in disguise. Those lessons are the building blocks to accomplishment.

WHY LONG-TERM CARE IS A WOMEN’S ISSUE By Linda Buccilli, Northwestern Mutual
P
rotecting your independence, your choices, and your retirement savings from the potentially high cost of longterm care is important to everyone. But if you’re a woman, that challenge may be even more significant. That’s because women not only provide but also receive the majority of long-term care services. Consider these statistics. Today, approximately 75% of unpaid caregivers are women, according to the Institute on Aging (2018). This can be physically, emotionally, and financially draining. According to the 2018 C.A.R.E. study by Northwestern Mutual, 68% of caregivers provide financial support as part of care. With 48% of caregivers spending 6-16 or more hours a day providing care, it’s not surprising that other areas of their lives were affected as well. 54% said their jobs were impacted by caregiving and 76% had to choose between caregiving and spending time with their spouse, children, friends, or taking personal time for themselves. In addition, women live longer on average than men. This means they not only are more likely to need long-term care, but also tend to use those services for a longer period of time, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
A common misconception is that Medicare and private health insurance will pay for long-term care needs, but Medicare pays for only a small part of long-term care costs, and only if certain conditions are met. While Medicaid does cover long-term care, it is available only after you’ve spent down most of your own savings. As a result, you may need to cover the costs of care out of your own savings and retirement assets until you qualify. In light of this, it is obvious why it’s critical for women to plan for the potential of long-term care, and it’s why funding potential long-term care needs has become an essential part of retirement planning for a growing number of American women today. This is where a qualified financial professional can make a difference. An experienced financial professional can discuss your needs and concerns, help you understand your options, and then design a strategy to help protect your assets so that they aren’t exhausted by possible extendedcare costs. By planning ahead, he or she can help you maintain your independence and ensure you have financial security to live your life your way.

THE RIGHT INSURANCE CAN MEET BOTH SHORT- AND LONG-TERM NEEDS
I
f you’re going to achieve your important financial goals, you’ll need to build an appropriate investment portfolio. But that’s only part of the story – because you also need to protect what you have, what you earn and what you’d like to leave behind. That’s why it’s a good idea to become familiar with the various types of insurance and how they can address short- and long-term needs. For starters, consider life insurance. You may have important long-term goals, such as leaving an inheritance for your family and providing resources for your favorite charities. You may be able to fulfill some of these through the death benefit on your policy. You can also purchase life insurance to help fill the gap between the amounts you have saved and what your family would need if you died unexpectedly. Thus, insurance can pay for liabilities (such as a mortgage, car payments, student loans and other debts), education expenses (such as college for your children) and final expenses associated with your passing. Next, consider disability insurance. If you were injured or became ill and couldn’t work for a while, the loss of income could be a big problem for your family members – in fact, it could disrupt their entire lifestyle. Even a short-term disability could prove worrisome, while a long-term disability could be catastrophic. Your employer might offer shortterm disability insurance, and that could be enough – but do you really want to take that chance? To protect your income if you were
out of work for an extended period, you might need to supplement your employer’s coverage with your own long-term disability policy. Longterm disability insurance, which generally kicks in after you’ve used up your short-term benefits, may pay you for a designated time period (perhaps two to five years) or until your reach a certain age, such as 65. Longterm disability insurance likely won’t replace your entire income, but it can go a long way toward helping you stay “above water” until you recover. You may also want to think about long-term care insurance. Despite its name, a long-term care policy could meet either short- or longterm needs. On the short-term end, you might need the services of a home health care aide to assist you in your recovery from an injury such as a broken hip. On the other end of the long-term care scale, you might someday need an extensive stay in a nursing home, which can be extremely expensive and which isn’t typically covered by Medicare. But in either case, you might be able to benefit from a longterm care insurance policy, or possibly a longterm care rider attached to a life insurance policy. And the earlier you take action, the better, because long-term care insurance, in particular, generally becomes more expensive the older you get. This list of insurance policies, and the needs they can help meet, is certainly not exhaustive, but it should give you an idea of just how important the right insurance coverage can be for you – at almost any stage of your life.

CELEBRATING OUR LOCAL SMALL BUSINESSES By Rod Davis CEO BBB Serving Southeast Florida and the Caribbean
T
he unique restaurants, shops, bars, and businesses give our communities the flavor that makes them special. When visitors come to town we enjoy taking friends and family to unique memorable spots that they won’t find when they return home. These fun bars, cool clubs, great shops, soothing spas, and unique venues help define our communities. Once a year, the nation celebrates our small businesses with Small Business Saturday. This year we will celebrate Small Business Saturday on November 30, 2019. I hope you will stop into your local coffee shop, buy some holiday gifts at the one of a kind store, and hire a local designer to give your home a makeover as a gift to yourself. As part of our community, these stores employ our neighbors, participate in planning to improve our neighborhood, and contribute to important causes with funds and people power. Each of these businesses has a
local person or group of people serving our community while they follow their dream to build their business. At BBB we routinely meet with these business leaders and see firsthand the passion and unique vision that make each business special. I thought I would share just a few of the cool local businesses with you to get you excited to find and support other local small businesses during this holiday shopping season and all year. Since I am a notorious plant killer, I am often looking for new plants. Garden Works Supply Center on Oakland Park Boulevard is a great local option with helpful staff and some unique pots and plants. After learning of my propensity to send plants to an early grave, they recommended a few plants that even I have managed to keep alive and looking great. Local businesses are able to know their customers, provide good advice, and take the time to help you find the best option. OutClique.com | 63
How often do we go down to the big box home supply company come home and see that our neighbor has the exact same door, shed, cabinets, etc.? Our community knows being unique is a gift and finding a unique door to welcome people into our homes is made much easier by the www.CustomerDoorShop. com and other local businesses. This small business started in 1999 and has thousands of their own designs to share with you or work with you on one just for your home. You don’t even need to venture out to the local businesses to support them since they are using eCommerce to make shopping easier. www.MaleBasics.com let’s us guys shop for boxers, briefs, or boxer briefs in the comfort of our own home. I might be a little old fashioned. There are some purchases I like to make without other people judging my style. www.Tropaholic.com is a small business that started in 1947 from a small snack stand. They provide unique island inspired clothing that is actually made in Hawaii, USA, and Bali. Instead of an ugly holiday sweater why not sport a Hawaiian Holiday shirt? Speaking of the holidays, I used to channel my
inner Martha Stewart, create a menu of tasty treats, and bake my butt off for three days and prep and serve the food during my holiday party. Afterwards, everyone had a great time, except for me; I spent the rest of the night and following day cleaning. Another great small business to support during the holidays and throughout the year is the caterers who do all the work so we can enjoy our friends and family. BBB, OutClique, and the Sun-Sentinel recently hosted an event in Fort Lauderdale for our business community and www. PrideCateringFTL.com prepared and served great hors d'oeuvres and drinks by Chef Mazza and his staff. We enjoyed our guests and networking and the catering team handled all the hard work! Every day a new business joins our community. Take time to visit them, support them and welcome them to the neighborhood. Whether you live in Delray, Miami, West Palm Beach, or Wilton Manors, our local businesses need your support, and when appropriate, suggestions to improve and prosper. Let’s make every day Small Business Saturday by supporting those local businesses that make our community special.

f you take a close look at your community, you will find that a lot gets done by just a few people. The ones that see working their nine-to-five as just the beginning of their day. The ones who dedicate their time and talent to lifting everyone up and see it as a privilege, not a burden. The Greater Fort Lauderdale Gay Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (GFLGLCC) recently named their heroes, people making a difference in our community. Their mission is promoting business and economic opportunities for the LGBT and LGBTfriendly community, and being an advocate and resource for all member businesses working towards those goals. The GFLGLCC is just a few years old, but is already making an impact on our community, and recognizing their success stories, their heroes, is important to them.
Linda is a powerhouse success in all three phases of life: family, professionally, and in the community. "I try to have a work-life balance. I'm a single mom and I have two beautiful boys." I met with her at her office to talk family, finance, and philanthropy. "My family comes first and also so do my clients." Her kids are both in high school, which means band practice, fundraisers, homework, and projects. Add to that helping clients plan their future finances and organizing community projects, it could be overwhelming. I’m exhausted just thinking about it. "When people say 'Linda how do you do it?' I say don't tell me that. I just do it. I don't think, I do it."
After initially being reluctant, LInda jumped into philanthropy head first. "I kind of like fell into it. I was nominated five years ago as one of the 100 Outstanding Women of Broward County by Boys & Girls Club." Linda was flattered but tried to decline because she thought she didn’t have time. But after a visit to a club, she saw a need she knew she could fulfill. The basketball courts and facilities were in need of refurbishment. But, when she got to the computer lab, Linda knew something had to be done, and she was the one to do it. There were just six old computers with old school monitors, and kids, who don’t have internet at home, were limited to ten minutes a day to do homework, check their grades and do other online assignments. "My heart was driving me to do something.” Linda went to her boss and asked what happened to the laptops her office replaced every two years. He said they were wiped clean and put in storage, and that she was welcome to do whatever she wanted with them. So she grabbed the keys and when she opened the door, she knew she hit the high tech goldmine. "I kid you not, floor to ceiling laptops." The difference in these kids’ lives was immediate. "Now we have an entire computer homework room. I gave them the cables, everything." Now Linda is more involved in myriad communities. In addition to Boys & Girls Clubs, she’s on the Leukemia Lymphoma Association, organizes Wine, Women, and Shoes, hosts breakfasts and much more. "I want to leave my footprint. I want to be known for making a difference. I don't need
to be known as the top fundraiser, I just want to make a difference." But it took her office to point out that she was also making a big impact on the LGBT community. "I'm an ally. It was actually Northwestern Mutual that identified me as an ally." Someone pointed out that 27% of her clients are in the community. It wasn’t a conscious effort, just something that happened naturally. "Before you know it you get into the community because people do business with people that they know, like, and trust. It doesn't matter that I'm not gay of lesbian, what matters is I'm an ally and I care.” She’s also proud that her company has a 100 score with Human Rights Campaign. “They’re tough. You have to dot all your ‘i's and cross your ‘t’s.” Linda says it all comes from making connections. "We have intimate conversations. Talking about your finances is very intimate." And she sees faces, not dollar signs. "When I look at someone, I don't know if they're a millionaire or not. Funny, people who look like they have money with their Maseratis and $5,000 shoes and $10,000 bags, they have nothing. And the ones driving the used vehicles and renting, they're the ones that have money. I don't look at someone and go 'hmmm, what can they spend in premium?' I look and go you need help. You need guidance. You need my expertise. How can I help you today?" If it’s her time or her expertise, to her family or a stranger, Linda is driven to give, and that’s the mark of a true hero. "I gave a little because I saw, and now I give so much. You can never go broke giving. And it warms my heart." OutClique.com | 67

CHRISTMAS PRESENCE By Rev. Patrick Rogers, MDiv.
C
hristmas isn’t a day, it’s not a holiday, it’s a “lifestyle” that we can choose!
We are so often surrounded by stress. Challenges regarding jobs, relationships, friendships, finances, health, housing, theology, politics, and social justice issues, the list can seem endless. Overwhelming is an understatement! But then, there is the good! As the pastor of United Church of Christ Fort Lauderdale, our church has an outreach called Ruth Ministry. Over 8,000 meals are served a year plus clothing, shoes, toiletries, referrals for jobs, housing, and more, all served with side dishes of love and compassion. When I search for hope, I look around me! I see hope in the love that exists in our community and beyond. Just today, Fritz and Mark from Smarty Pants bar donated and delivered ten 20lb turkeys for our Thanksgiving holiday meal that is fast approaching. The Thanksgiving turkeys, together with the appropriate side dishes, will be lovingly prepared by our Ruth Ministry kitchen volunteers! I see a community supporting Ruth Ministry. The clothing distributed yearly amounts to over 5,000 shirts, 3,600 pairs of shoes, pants, socks, underwear, and more. Where does all this come from? It comes from the heart of a community who cares about those in need. The love comes from individuals, families, fundraisers, nonprofit and forprofit organizations, people who work for the businesses near the church from both
Fort Lauderdale and Wilton Manors that are aware of this program, and God’s numerous loving and giving ways. Every Christmas season, Ruth Ministry distributes empty Christmas stockings to individuals, families, and companies who volunteer, in return, to fill them with Christmas presents and Christmas presence. Each stocking contains some basic toiletries, candy, a couple of small presents, love, and joy! Come Christmas, they are given out by Santa and Santa’s helpers to many who would otherwise receive nothing. Our Christmas meal is prepared and served by volunteers coming from Temple Adath Or and our regular volunteers help put it all together. The food for that meal is prepared by their chef and his helpers. The presents and presence that are given from this place daily are done so out of love that doesn’t judge nor have condition. This holiday party lasts all year long and it is one where all are welcome. And as we sing the words as the confetti drops on Sunday nights at Hunters, “Love is in the air.

SEASONAL AFFECTIVE DISORDER (SAD)
I
f you’ve ever wondered why you just can’t get into the holidays like you used to or actually felt depressed in the fall through winter, you may suffer from seasonal affective disorder (SAD), a type of depression related to changes in seasons. While SAD during the fall and winter months is more common, you may also be affected in the spring and summer months. First of all, clinical depression is not your fault. It may not be something you can just “snap out of” without the help of medical intervention or therapy; it is a mood disorder that affects the neural circuitry in your brain. Signs and symptoms of SAD may include:
Feeling depressed most of the day, nearly every day Losing interest in activities you once enjoyed
Appetite changes, especially a craving for foods high in carbohydrates Weight gain Tiredness or low energy Spring and summer SAD, or summer depression, may include:
Trouble sleeping (insomnia) Poor appetite Weight loss Agitation or anxiety When should I (or a loved one) see a doctor about seasonal depression?
Feeling down for days at a time
Having low energy
No desire to engage in activities you normally enjoy
Having problems with sleeping
Change in sleep patterns
Experiencing changes in your appetite or weight
Change in appetite
Feeling sluggish or agitated Having difficulty concentrating Feeling hopeless, worthless or guilty Having frequent thoughts of death or suicide Fall and winter SAD, or winter depression, may include:
Oversleeping
Increase in alcohol use Feeling hopeless Suicidal thoughts The cause of seasonal affective disorder is not certain but should not be taken any less seriously than depression as we know it traditionally. As with other types of depression, SAD can get worse and lead to more complex mental health problems if it's not treated.

TREATING THE WHOLE PERSON
COMPASSIONATE, COMPETENT, AND COMMITTED CARE FOR THE TRANSGENDER COMMUNITY
C
are Resource is a nonprofit, Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) with locations in Midtown Miami, Little Havana, Miami Beach, and Fort Lauderdale. Since its founding 35 years ago, Care Resource has shown dedication to LGBTQ health, in addition to the health of South Florida’s underserved communities. The health center is continuously recognized as a leader in LGBTQ Healthcare Equality Index (HEI). Care Resource’s best practices in LGBTQ care include but are not limited to: an Equal Employment Opportunity Policy to ensure nondiscrimination in management practices and decisions, LGBTQ Patient Training for staff, and an LGBTQ-inclusive patient non-discrimination policy. In this short interview, Ben Hersh, MD, Primary Care Physician, shares lessons and experiences gained from working with the transgender community. Since joining Care Resource in August 2019, he has positioned himself as a leader in providing respectful and accessible care for transgender patients. OutClique: Tell us a little about your professional background. Dr. Ben Hersh: I got my start in the medical field working as a medic at a local men’s free clinic. While I was there, I became empathetic to the experiences of trans men because although we intended to serve all men, we didn’t have the capacity to offer certain services for trans men. I later worked within a different clinic network where we were the first site in our affiliate to prescribe hormones to transgender individuals. These early experiences were especially formative in shaping my desire to serve transgender individuals.
94 | OutClique.com
When I began my formal medical training in Boston, I knew I wanted to focus my career on investing in the health of the whole person. I started with the intent to learn primary care and discovered Family Medicine. Family Medicine is unique in that it considers not just the individual, but their families, communities, systems of care, and the policies surrounding them. It assesses how these factors affect the individual and how they can be addressed to improve the individual’s health and the health of populations. While in medical residency, I continued to gain skills in transgender health and received the opportunity to follow a panel of transgender patients at an affiliated gender clinic. I also helped create a training program for future primary care providers that taught learners how to conduct a respectful visit with a transgender person and the basic tenets of prescribing hormones.
OCQ
Tell us more about addressing the health of the whole person.
BH
For my first job in the South Florida area, I was looking for a missiondriven organization that embodied the principles of Family Medicine – excellent care of the individual while addressing the larger context they live in. One model of care that many clinics are adopting is the Patient-Centered Medical Home. It’s not just about accessing health care in a visit, but care coordination: accessing case managers, behavioral health, and lab and pharmacy services within a unified context. This model of a one-stop-shop has proven to be very effective for patients. On top of that, I was trying to find a community health center that offered specific services that fulfill my professional passions: primary care, pediatric care, transgender care, general LGBTQ care, HIV care, and Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) therapy for substance use disorder. I was worried I wouldn’t find an organization that would meet all of those different needs in South Florida—until I found Care Resource.
OCQ
What does it mean for a health center to provide quality transgender care?
BH
Transgender individuals shouldn’t have to go to a health center that’s specifically transgender-friendly in order to receive quality care—they should be able to go anywhere. It is important that health centers like Care Resource exist. Here, patients are assured that they are being cared for by knowledgeable providers. They know that they can access behavioral health services, case managers that are well versed in transgender issues, and receive safe referrals to ancillary services, including surgical support or speech therapy. In addition to trans-specific needs, transgender individuals have the same health issues as everyone else. It’s important to me to know that I can send my patients to a cardiologist, nephrologist, or any specialist if needed, and know that they will receive respectful care.
OCQ BH
What are the specific issues trans individuals experience?
It’s important to keep in mind that every transgender individual’s journey is unique. Their desires and needs in how they want to represent themselves and the transition they want to undergo are all different. The options range from a social transition with the adjustment of legal documents to the inclusion of medical services such as hormone therapy, speech therapy, and surgery. We have to acknowledge that everyone has their own journey, and we have to be able to support them in it. Many transgender individuals, but by no means all, are very affected by social determinants of health: lack of housing and social support, substance use disorders, behavioral health issues, a disproportionate risk of suicide, and risk of HIV. They also experience trauma within the healthcare setting and harassment by providers—some have been told by providers that they shouldn’t be transgender or have had had inappropriate exams performed that had nothing to do with the reason they were coming in for care. These social determinants have a trickle-down effect on people’s health. Hopefully, as transgender individuals are more accepted into society, these determinants will become less of an issue, but right now, they’re present, and they need to be acknowledged and addressed.
OCQ
How does Care Resource further address the various social issues that affect the health of transgender individuals?
BH
Generally, FQHCs have a better handle on addressing the social determinants of health than private practices that work in isolation. Care Resource does an excellent job with that. When you see a high ratio of case managers to health providers, you know that the health center is prioritizing understanding and addressing social determinants. Care Resource has taken the time to identify resources and put them together for patients, OutClique.com | 95
which means a lot in a less resource-rich state like Florida when it comes to health services for the underserved. You can tell that Care Resource is a safe place where members of underserved communities can be themselves and don’t need to worry that they will be harassed or disrespected.
OCQ practice?
What are some lessons you continue to apply in your medical
BH
One of the most important things I’ve learned, and that has been told to me by trans patients, is that simply treating someone with basic respect, respecting who they are, is such an important part of the visit. Acknowledging their gender identity, using the correct personal gender pronouns (PGPs)— many patients have never experienced that in a health center. It’s such a low bar to provide that safe space for folks. We have to acknowledge that each of our patients has their own story and remember this in all of our interactions with them. Even within a community or group, each individual is different. Yes, a provider should understand issues that affect the trans community, but they should also see the unique person in front of them.
OCQ
What are the services Care Resource offers for the transgender community?
Given how much HIV and AIDS affect the LGBTQ community, we are encouraging people to come in for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), a once-daily pill that prevents HIV. The CDC is just recently starting to extrapolate data on the rates of HIV within the trans community. Men who have sex with men (MSM) are thought to have the highest rates of new infection in the U.S., but I believe the rates within the trans community, especially among trans women, could be higher. It’s important to get people at risk of acquiring HIV on PrEP—that will have a huge effect on our health outcomes. We need people to know PrEP is available, and that the medications are incredibly effective and highly tolerable: patients are not experiencing adverse reactions. We have vouchers that allow uninsured patients to access an exam and basic labs at no cost to begin the PrEP regimen, including a follow-up visit for lab results. Depending on income and insurance, PrEP can be obtained for little to no cost.
OCQ
What is one word you would use to describe your commitment to transgender healthcare?
BH
Passionate: I’m passionate about providing quality care to individuals and improving care for all trans folks, within and beyond our health care center.
BH
In addition to primary care, the health center provides hormone therapy, surgical referrals, legal document assistance, letters of support, and behavioral services from trained and licensed professionals.
About Care Resource: Care Resource is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization and a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) with four locations in Midtown Miami, Little Havana, Miami Beach, and Fort Lauderdale. The health center provides comprehensive health and support services to address the full health care needs of South Florida’s pediatric, adolescent and adult populations. MARTY CHILDERS By Andy Armano | www.AndyArmano.com
This series focuses on individuals who give to our community and make a positive impact on the lives of others. Often it is through our personal adversities that we discover who we are and transform the challenges into strength. 100 | OutClique.com

WHAT MAKES US CLIQUE
Andy Armano: So start by telling me a little bit about where you grew up and your background. Marty Childers: I grew up in Kentucky and spent the biggest part of my life there, in a rural community in Eastern Kentucky. I graduated from college, went to work in a car dealership for 10 years as a finance manager. At that time, I got involved in theater on stage. I also began working on the board of directors and managed a theater. I truly have a love for the theater, and I truly have a love for excellence. It’s not just on the stage. It's also in the experience when a theater-goer calls, when the audience is checking in, when we are trying to park. You have to present good theater, but you also have to treat people well, and make them feel like you're doing this for them and their experience is important. Actually, that's any good business, for profit, nonprofit, you name it.
AA MC
How did you get to Island City Stage?
AA MC
Oh wow. So you moved here for this job? How was the move?
I was living in Kentucky and I saw the job posting for the position. I knew a little bit about Fort Lauderdale because I had visited here. So, I applied for it. And they called me the next day, and within a few months I was hired and started in January 2016.
Big change. It's one thing to visit, but when you move somewhere, and you actually live there, you're immersed into the culture of the area. It was so different and the adjustment was difficult at first. But working here has been great from day one. I love being a part of an organization that is growing and thriving.
AA
What do you see as the role of the Island City Stage in the broader community?
MC
We're creating professional theater that has an LGBTQ focus, but it's for a universal audience. We are telling stories. It's our lives, our stories, and they are powerful.

AA
Do you think it's important to see your life reflected in a play? Have you had that experience?
MC
“A Perfect Arrangement” is one of my favorite shows that we did. It's about a couple living during the 50s, and it's about how living a lie doesn't help anyone. There comes a point when one character had to say, "Am I going to lie, or am I going to live the truth?" And in my own life, it was very painful going from living a lie for most of my life. For me, living where I lived, it was about keeping my mouth shut. For the sake of my family, I never said a word. And then, I was outed in a very purposefully painful way. And, at the time, it did everything I feared it would do, except for one thing. My biggest fear was that I would lose my family, but that didn’t happen.
AA MC
I’m so glad to hear that. How did your family react?
AA
Thank you for sharing that. It’s in our darkest hours that we see who shines brightest in our lives. There can be great healing in that. It’s inspiring to see others grow from their difficulties. Were you able to find peace or resolution in time?
MC
Yes, for sure. It really is part of what has shaped me, and gave me compassion for other people going through things, and a passion for the kind of work that we do. It was a painful time as you can tell, it still is. But if it hadn't happened, I wouldn't be here. I would not have met my partner, Harold, and I wouldn't be the strong person that I am now. I wouldn't be as compassionate as I am for other people who are dealing with having to hide parts of their lives, just to survive.

They were the very first ones to support me. For the first time, my brother texted me and said "I love you brother." The rest of my family told me they loved me. And my nephew said, "Is there somebody's
ass I need to kick for you?" And then even my pastor supported me. I had emailed him and said, "I don't want the church to take a hit over this, so please just take my name off the roll." And he said, "Hell no, you're not going anywhere."

A HOLIDAY FROM THE ORDINARY By John M. Hayden Photo by Andy Armano | www.AndyArmano.com 106 | OutClique.com
L
ED Christmas trees blinking in time with “Jingle Bells.” Mega-Menorahs on wellmanicured lawns. Traffic jams by the malls. Yes, the holidays are in full effect. While most of the country is indoors to stay out of the cold, we still duck inside to get a break from the heat. One place to stay cool and have a cool time is the Museum of Discovery and Science (MODS) in downtown Fort Lauderdale. Joseph P. Cox, the President/CEO of MODS, is excited for the season both personally and professionally. He took some time to tell OutClique what he’s most excited about and what MODS will use to keep us cool during the warm December days. Like so many people in Florida, he loves discovering what the area offers in December and creating his own routines. “Spending the holidays in a tropical climate always reminds me of how lucky we are to live in South Florida.” And he tries to bring that experience inside the Museum. “We bring the science and the spirit of the winter holidays, no matter which one your family celebrates, to MODS with family experiences, interactive and charming activities like snow in our bus loop and holiday slime, and we provide the perfect photo opportunities to remember the day. Let it snow south Florida-style at MODS!” For Joe and his team, that means coming up with engaging activities for natives, transplants, and snowbirds. “We look forward to welcoming both local residents and visitors who come to South Florida for the holidays. We are eager to share with them our array of engaging holiday programming including the North Pole Pajama Party!” With attractions like this, it’s clear MODS isn’t your average or traditional museum. It turns out there’s plenty more for the community to get on board with. “For the second year in a row, MODS has partnered with Rail Events and Brightline to bring The Polar Express Train Ride to South Florida.” As sure as radios blare Christmas music and
people wear ugly sweaters to the beach, there will be classic holiday movies. Joe’s taking that tradition and bringing it to the biggest of big screens. “MODS also will feature screenings of the classic holiday film, The Polar Express, on our giant IMAX® screen.” He added, “When you’re thinking of holiday gifts, consider the gift of a MODS membership to experience the Museum all year long.” When the holidays come to a close, New Year’s Eve will arrive 12 hours early at MODS. “Join us to ring in the New Year with a special Noon Year’s Eve program for families. MODS is a great place for family time. A popular family hangout is in our newest exhibit, the remastered and expanded To Fly Exhibition Hall and stateof-the-art makerspace, The Leighton Family Hangar. The Hangar fosters innovative handson experiences in a unique blending of hightech and low-tech to make for a memorable visit this holiday season,” Cox continued. “The makerspace fosters the development of new skills, where visitors are encouraged to roll up their sleeves and tinker. It is a fusion of a science lab, engineering workshop, innovation workshop, and art room and is designed to be flexible to accommodate a wide range of collaborative activities, from robotics and electronics to sewing and 3D printing. It’s all happening at MODS.” Even though we’re still a few days away from ringing in 2020, Joe told us that he’s already got big things virtually lined up for the new year. “Entering the year 2020 feels like we are arriving at a major collective milestone. The future is actually here, and MODS is poised and ready. We are leading MODS into the future by featuring mixed reality, or ‘XR’ (augmented reality, virtual reality, spatial computing), a leading-edge makerspace and infusing 21stcentury skills such as collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking to help prepare South Florida’s future workforce. MODS has an opportunity to support workforce development through this technology.” OutClique.com | 107
Joe’s commitment to the LGBTQ+ community also will continue in the new year. In 2019, the Museum held its first Pride Day. The MODS team plans to build on that success. “With more than 2,000 attendees, MODS’ first Pride Day was exhilarating and inspirational.” That community support makes it even more imperative in the future. “The support we received from our community, partners, friends, and staff reinforces our important work. Inclusivity at MODS represents a true cultural openness where we celebrate and embrace our diverse community. The Museum’s doors are open to everyone, including all family structures, ethnicities, physical and emotional disabilities, and all education, social, and economic levels. Everyone is welcome at MODS.”
Photo by Andy Armano | www.AndyArmano.com
Though Pride is still months away, Joe makes sure it’s an attitude that exists more than one day or one month each year. “We stand at the forefront of diversity, creating specific inclusive programming, an all gender restroom to ensure all guests are comfortable, staff training, and the establishment of our LGBTQ+ Inclusivity Task Force. The Task Force is comprised of more than 18 community members, from leaders of corporations to LGBTQ+ media outlets who come together to plan and support future programs at MODS. This inclusion initiative is funded in part by a generous grant from the Community Foundation of Broward. We are actively planning next year’s Pride Day at MODS, and we encourage and welcome the community to get involved and attend!” Joe mentioned the AutoNation® IMAX® Theater is showing a holiday favorite this month, but in the new year, the screen will go retro, as in prehistoric. “As the first 108 | OutClique.com
original large-format dinosaur film in more than a decade, Dinosaurs of Antarctica in IMAX® promises to be epic. With an early 2020 premiere, viewers will explore these prehistoric creatures through next-level computer-generated imagery (CGI) on the largest IMAX® screen in South Florida. Visitors to MODS can then step into the sand-covered shoes of a paleontologist at our Expedition: Dinosaur! exhibit.”
About the Museum of Discovery and Science (MODS) Founded in 1976 as the Discovery Center, today MODS is at the forefront of science education, innovation, and exploration. The Museum showcases more than 300 interactive exhibits, immersive films, and experiential programs. With a designated STEM Center and new aviation-themed makerspace, The Leighton Family Hangar, MODS is committed to engaging, enriching, and inspiring tomorrow’s workforce today. The Museum celebrates diversity and welcomes more than 400,000 visitors annually from all walks of life. MODS is open every day of the year, except Thanksgiving, one day in the spring for its Annual Wine, Spirits, and Culinary Celebration (March 13, 2020), and one day in the fall for the Annual Gala (October 2020). Hours are Monday through Saturday from 10:00AM to 5:00PM, and Sunday from noon to 5:00PM. MODS is located downtown at 401 SW Second Street, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33312. For more information about the Museum, please call (954) 467MODS (6637) or visit www.MODS.org.

Joe says he’s looking forward to a bustling holiday season and an even busier future in 2020 and beyond for MODS and South Florida. “The Museum has played such an important role in our community for many years, and its future potential is beyond measure and very exciting.”

est Side Story. Beauty and the Beast. Kinky Boots! Some of the biggest Broadway shows are coming to South Florida, and you probably don’t even know they’re here. The Lauderhill Performing Arts Center (LPAC) is one of our area’s newest venues and is already bringing through top acts and shows. Now in its fourth season, LPAC is hitting its stride, serving Lauderhill and all of Broward County. The building has a sweeping glass entrance with a gorgeous view. Inside you will

find only around 1,100 seats looking down on a grand stage. It’s this type of intimate setting that helps the LPAC stand out. There are lots of theaters, large and small, in our area, but the newness of the venue means big acts can come in and not sacrifice the quality of the production. And speaking of acts, we mentioned the iconic Broadway shows coming to the LPAC this year. But that’s just scratching the surface. The mission of the Lauderhill Performing Arts Center is to provide diverse, quality performing
arts programming to the City of Lauderhill and its neighboring communities, and to serve as a hub for community involvement, engagement, and artistic expression. The center also strives to be an influence for positive economic growth and development for its neighbors. And that means more than just over-the-top musicals. The stage hosts numerous performances by South Florida legends. This season they’re taking on Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and The Big Bopper in The Day the Music Didn’t Die. Gone But Not Forgotten will feature tributes to Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, and Donna Summer. But if long gone musicians doesn’t do it for you, you can come down and laugh out loud. Last month they hosted the Sistrunk Comedy Festival. This month on December 28, 2019, Coming Through America will take the stage. What better way to fill the void between the
Christmas food coma and parties of the new year? In 2020, Russian comic Pavel Volya will take the stage. Also on the schedule is Dan Naturman, a breakout star from America’s Got Talent. For the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, the city of Lauderhill is putting on the 2020 MLK Old School Music Celebration. Regina Bell and Freddie Jackson will headline the show. And bringing it back to Broadway shows, the Tony award winning show Once is on the stage in December 2019, and Kinky Boots strut into Lauderhill in January 2020. Their 2019-2020 lineup has something for everyone who likes a night out at the theater. If you haven’t been, go to a show and check out the LPAC. It could become your new favorite place to watch a show.

JUST DESSERTS AT THE CAKE By John M. Hayden
C
ake has a checkered history. It’s a ubiquitous treat at birthdays, going away parties, and other celebrations. It also led to Marie Antoinette’s date with the guillotine. These days the dessert is at the center of the civil rights movement. Searching for ways to protest marriage equality, some bakers refuse to bake cakes for gay or lesbian couples tying the knot. The issue is deeply personal to anyone involved, and at this point most people know where they stand on the issue and aren’t open to changing their minds. It’s against that seemingly implacable backdrop that the play The Cake is set. Just in time for the holidays, it runs December 5-22, 2019, at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County and will give us all something to talk about over dessert and coffee. Margaret Leford’s directing the play and told us a little bit about the characters and the challenges of bringing their story to life. “We meet Della, a North Carolina baker, on the day her best friend’s daughter, Jen, comes home announcing her engagement and asked Della to bake her wedding cake.” Seems reasonable, but Margaret tells us, there’s a twist. “Upon finding out Jen is engaged to Macy, a woman, Della says she is too busy to bake the cake. And that is scene one.” Since the attitudes and actions of the main characters are established so quickly, it leaves lots of time to look at what drives them. “From there, the play explores how this hastily made choice affects Della (and her husband Tim) and Jen and Macy. This play really examines both sides of the issue with humanity, truth, and humor, believe it or not.” It would be easy for this type of story to be a black and white, right and wrong morality play, but Margaret says the point is to avoid that type of simplicity. “None of us are perfect nor are these characters, but the play allows the characters to explore their own truths, where their belief systems come from, how they
formed, and how to be better in the ways that they can.” Jen faces her own challenges as well. “Not only is she trying to live up to her dead mother’s expectations of the perfect wedding, but also Jen struggles with the understanding, which Della confirms, that her mother would not approve of this union.” That leads to some existential reflecting. “Jen is torn between her southern roots, her instilled and installed belief system, and the world she is exploring in NYC, the lesbian culture she finds herself in the middle of when falling in love with Macy. She feels displaced in both places and seeks to reconcile the duality within herself.” Even though most people already have an opinion, Margaret hopes the show starts a discussion. “It is only through good discussion and conversation that we can begin to understand what we do not know or understand, what puzzles us, or what we have yet to explore.” The key to success on a topic like this is engaging, not alienating, the audience, but she says that’s a way to find our similarities. “At our core, we are all the same: we have hopes, fears, people, or things we love, and people or things we are afraid to lose. When we can recognize those qualities, these inherent attributes, in a character on stage or the person sitting next to us, we have a place of commonality from which to draw.” It’s that recognition that moves the conversation. “If we can recognize our own selves in another person, then we might be able to understand where the differences of opinion come from, as we have walked different paths in life. We might not be able to change a person’s opinion, but may open their mind and heart to those who haven’t been formed or informed in the same way. So, it is through the recognition of a fellow person’s humanity that we can have these conversations and, hopefully, understanding and compassion.”

AN EVENING WITH
THE FORT LAUDERDALE GAY MEN’S CHORUS By Denny Patterson Under the direction of Dr. Gary Keating, the Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus proudly presents its annual holiday concert, If You Just Believe, on Saturday, December 7, 2019 at the All Saints Episcopal Church. Showtime begins at 8:00PM.
C
elebrating the holiday season and sharing gratitude and good cheer, Keating says audiences can expect a fabulous performance that will make them leave with a smile on their face and a song in their heart. “We performed a couple heavier programs last spring,” he said. “First the tribute to Leonard Bernstein and Matthew Shepard, then the combined concerts with the Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida and the Miami Gay Men’s Chorus in honor of the 50th anniversary of Stonewall, so I programmed a lighter concert for this holiday season. If You Just Believe will present lots of favorites that people will appreciate for the holiday season. A stunning new Hanukkah song, favorites like ‘Mary Did You Know’ and ‘Feliz Navidad,’ and a reflective version of ‘Pure Imagination.’ About four years ago, we created an artistic committee that works with me to create what we call Choral Theatre. These bits of dialogue often share personal experiences of members, or new material that tie our program together.” Because the concert is on December 7, 2019, National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, there will be a special tribute to honor those serving in the military.
“It would be inappropriate to not honor the men and women who fought and gave their lives in that battle and those who have or continue to serve all over the world,” Keating said. “We will sing ‘A Grateful Nation’ from our commissioned work, Living Out Loud, that specifically honors LGBTQ soldiers. Then, with our guests, the LGBTQ Veterans Association of South Florida who will present the colors, we will sing a tribute to the Armed Forces, each song representing each of the different branches. It will be our honor to ask anyone who has served to stand when the song from their branch of service is performed. We will finish with the ‘National Anthem.’” Keating is preparing himself for the concert’s emotional impact. There will be several spots in this concert where I will get emotional,” he said. “I had an uncle who helped raise me who earned both a Silver Star and Purple Heart in WWII and a nephew serving in the United States Army who I am very proud of. That will be special. Additionally, it is always important to see how the music affects my singers. Concerts are what we do, but what we really do is provide a safe space for gay men to come together each week and make music. When that happens, you can see the feeling of success on their faces or the emotional impact. That excitement will never go away for me.”
Last year’s concert was standing room only, so Keating is shooting for another sold out event. For more information and ticket prices, visit www.FTLGMC.org. 122 | OutClique.com

IN THE HOLIDAY SPIRIT WITH LEANN RIMES By Gregg Shapiro Photo by Sara Hertel

A
t only 37, LeAnn Rimes is what you would call a showbiz veteran. A childhood superstar at 13 when her cover of Bill Mack’s “Blue” rose to the top of the country and pop charts, Rimes has grown up before our eyes (and ears). Known for hits such as “How Do I Live," “Can’t Fight The Moonlight," and her duet with Elton John on “Written in the Stars," Rimes is also a longtime friend and supporter of the LGBTQ+ community. In fact, she performed at the Chicago Pride Fest in June 2019. In addition to her country and pop work, Rimes has a few Christmas albums in her catalog. Therefore, it’s not all that surprising that she has her own holiday music concert tour, “You and Me and Christmas." I spoke with Rimes shortly before she embarked on her Christmas music tour. Gregg Shapiro: LeAnn, you are coming to South Florida to perform your Christmas show “You and Me and Christmas” at The Pavilion in Seminole Casino Coconut Creek. What is your earliest Christmas memory? LeAnn Rimes: My godparents always made Christmas into an all-out celebration. Some of my first memories were at their house where I would sleep over on Christmas Eve. We would leave out cookies and milk for Santa, but when I caught on that my godfather was sneaking out to eat the cookies before Santa, I began leaving out sugar-free cookies for him because he was a diabetic. My godfather didn’t like that so much [laughs].
GS
If you had to pick one or two Christmas songs, which ones would
you choose as your favorites?
LR
Gosh, there are so many! But one of my top favorite songs to perform is “I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas." It’s just so fun and people don’t expect it, yet when they hear it, they love it!
GS
What was involved in selecting the songs that you will be performing for the “You And Me And Christmas” show?
LR
Well, there is a lot to choose from! It really comes down to where I’m at in my life, what I want to share, the vibe I’m wanting to have during the show. It’s actually an excruciating process. When I am first going through and marking off songs, it is much easier, but then it gets much harder to cut down the show. Essentially, the first thing that comes to mind is how do I feel and how do I want the audience to feel.
GS
Do you have any special Christmas traditions that you started as an
adult?
LR
I love to get up early and wake up my stepsons at the crack of dawn, and we all open our presents together and stay in our pajamas as long as possible.
GS
Finally, some of the venues on your concert tour are based at casinos. Are you someone who’s able to resist the allure of the slot machines or do you enjoy trying your luck?
LR
[Laughs] I am not a gambler myself, but I know some of the band likes to give it a go.
LeeAnn will be at the Seminole Casino Coconut Creek on December 14, 2019. Visit www.SeminoleCoconutCreekCasino.com for more information. OutClique.com | 129

How do you spend the holidays, and what is your favorite part? Every holiday is at my home. I am one of five, so I have a big family. So, I
Your go to holiday drink?
Even though I prefer not to drink, it is a tradition to have eggnog. What is the best gift you have ever received?
Big Frank bought me a convertible mustang and filled it with gifts when we first started dating.
DP DC
I would like to start by talking about the Holidays with the Housewives event that will take place at the Parker Playhouse. What can audiences expect?
Do you have a favorite Christmas memory that you will forever cherish?
Are you more of an in store or online kind of shopper?
In store. I like to look around and see what I am buying. Online can sometimes be tricky. I agree. Now, I would like to ask a few questions about RHONJ. This is your fourth season with the franchise. What is it like being on the show, and how has it changed your life?
DC
Knock on wood, it has been positive for me so far. I have been able to use my platform for a lot of good which is very fulfilling. OutClique.com | 133

How do you think New Jersey is different and stands out from the other Housewives series?
Jersey is the most real to me. We are relatable with real life issues. We also have a strong family aspect which not every franchise does. Do you watch any of the other franchises? If so, which one is your
favorite?
DC DP
Love my Dallas girls. I get a kick out of them.
I know family is very important to you and you mentioned them in some earlier questions. How is everything with Big Frank, Frankie, and Gabrielle?
DC
Thank you for asking. I sit back and look at all the hard work I put into them and it is all paying off. Gabrielle is in veterinary school now, and Frankie has a 4.0 GPA and interviews lined up with big banks in New York City. Proud is an understatement. Big Frank is also doing well. He is building my boyfriend’s new home which you will see this season.
DP
This season will revolve a lot around the situation between Teresa and Joe, and it was not that long ago when they did that joint interview on Watch What Happens Live. I know you have been asked this question a million times, but can you please tell us what your opinion is on the matter and do you think their relationship will survive?
I am praying and wishing them the best for whatever decision they
make.
The pinnacle of every Housewives season is the reunion special. Walk us through what that is like.
First, it starts with months of planning. Outfit, plastic surgery, hair, makeup, you name it. It takes a village. The night before you arrive at a hotel, production gives you the final episodes to see what everyone said behind your back in confessionals. You have 4:00AM wake up call to start the glam process, then you are ready to go. I would describe walking onto the stage like how the Romans felt when they had to go fight the lions in the colosseum. After a long day of filming, we all take the next few days off to tape our brains back together.
DP
The Housewives have always struck a chord with the LGBTQ+ community. Why do you think that is?
DC
I cannot answer for them, but I can say we admire, love, and stand behind them 100%.
DP
My last question for you Dolores, what can we expect next from you? Any upcoming projects we should be on the lookout for?
DC
This season of RHONJ, you will see a big project which is building my boyfriend David’s house. That is all I can tell you for now but stay tuned because a lot more is on the way!

SOUTH FLORIDA WELCOMES IRMINA TRYNKOS By Denny Patterson
H
ailed as an intense and charismatic star with phenomenal talent, violinist Irmina Trynkos excited to make her debut with the South Florida Symphony Orchestra (SFSO) for its Masterworks II series. Scheduled for January 15-16 & 18, 2020, Trynkos will be playing Nimrod Borenstein’s Concerto for violin and orchestra. Audiences are in for a glorious display of unique orchestra colors. Since her breakout performance, some of Trynkos’ career highlights include performing at the Berliner Philharmonie, Slovak Philharmonic, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Toronto Centre for the Arts, and Shanghai Concert Hall. Recently, she performed at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam where she received no less than six standing ovations. Additionally, Trynkos is a best-selling recording artist whose CD reached the Top 20 Specialist Classical Charts. Her recordings are broadcasted on international radios. I had the pleasure of chatting more with Trynkos about her upcoming performance with the SFSO. Denny Patterson: Hi, Irmina! Why don’t you begin by telling us what audiences can expect from your upcoming performance with the SFSO. Irmina Trynkos: We will have a fantastic time! I am performing Borenstein’s Concerto, and this is a very special piece to me as Maestra Sebrina chose it herself. This will be the American premiere of this concert which is also very exciting. The music is amazing, it’s so energetic. It literally takes you off your feet. I hope everybody enjoys it as much as I have enjoyed playing it.
DP about?
Since this is your debut concert with the SFSO, what are you most excited

IT
I have never played with this orchestra, so I am excited to see new people and see how they react to the music. I have heard amazing things about the musicians, and of course, Sebrina is such an amazing and accomplished musician. So, for me, it’s going to be a huge pleasure. To share new music with people who have never heard it.
DP IT
Have you always had a passion for the violin?
Yes! It’s funny, I do not come from a musical family. Literally everybody was against me becoming a musician, so it was a little hard to get through that, but I am an only child and I am stubborn. When I was three years old, I would listen to a lot of concerts because at that time, we only had the TV. I come from a non-musical city, no orchestra, no performances, and a tiny music school. At some point, somebody jokes by saying I’m going to play with the orchestra, and I said no, I plan to be the person in front with a pretty dress. I was serious. This is what I was going to do, and nobody could take it away from me. My parents had to give up at some point. No one knows why or where this passion came from. It’s a mystery.
DP IT
What would you say is the best part of being a professional violinist?
Everybody will say traveling because that’s great and meeting new people, but I think what’s amazing about being a violinist is the influence that you have on people from the moment you step out on stage. There are different types of performers and some people are shyer. I used to be a very shy child and I would literally do anything I could not to talk to anybody and violin was my way to communicate with the world. So, I would go on stage and be playful, but once I went offstage, I would hardly talk to anybody. Obviously, the violin was a way to communicate and it gave
me an understanding how important it is to connect with the audience. I play about something and obviously I don’t say what I am thinking about because every single time it’s something different. I always play different. Some of my coworkers say I am a dangerous player in a way because I never play the same [laughs]. The most important thing is connecting with the audience because you see their faces during your performance when you are on stage. I am one of those curious people who look at people’s faces when I’m playing because I love engaging. It can be magical. Of course, you should be as perfect as humanly possible, but the most important part is what you did and how you influenced the audience. When they listen, it’s priceless.
DP IT
What do you hope audiences take away from this performance?
DP
What’s next for you? Any upcoming projects we should be on the lookout
Well, I hope if this is someone’s first time to a concert, they will become more curious and this performance will give them a love for classical music. If I can introduce this piece in the right way, I am sure we will have a lot of fun. There is nothing more joyful than the audience, performers, and musicians all coming together to have fun. We are on this ride together and it’s exciting! I hope everyone will have as much enjoyment as possible.
for?
IT
I will be going back soon after to Europe because I am playing concerts there. I am playing in Poland, Romania, London, basically everywhere in Europe. Shortly after that, I will be in China for a tour. So, I am all over the place [laughs]. While doing all of that, I am trying to squeeze in my next recording project. I cannot talk too much about that just yet, it’s still a secret, but hopefully the next time I come to Florida, it will be official!

CELEBRATE BEETHOVEN WITH ROBYN LAMP AND THE SOUTH FLORIDA SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA By Denny Patterson
I
n honor of Ludwig van Beethoven’s 250th birthday, the South Florida Symphony Orchestra is putting on a musical performance that must not be missed. Audiences are invited to celebrate one of classical music’s greatest creative geniuses February 7, & 9 2019 with a special presentation of his epic Symphony No. 9 and the famous “Ode to Joy.” This concert will feature bass-baritone Neil Nelson, tenor Derreck Stark, and soprano Robyn Lamp, who I had the pleasure of chatting with. Lamp’s performances have earned her recognition and roles from rare gems to well-known classics. Her robust and golden voice has led her to perform with symphonies across the country, and she made her Carnegie Hall debut earlier this year. She is thrilled to return to the SFSO and celebrate the life and work of Beethoven. Denny Patterson: Hi, Robyn! Tell us what audiences can expect from your upcoming performance with the SFSO for its Beethoven 250th anniversary celebration. Robyn Lamp: They can expect glorious singing from the soloists and the chorus. We sing a very popular tune called “Ode to Joy,” a tune that everyone should recognize. So, you know, loud noises. The voices are only on the Fourth Movement, the last movement, so it is kind of nice because you sit through three movements of instrumental music, which is lovely, then you get something completely different in the movement. Different colors and a totally different experience.
DP
What are you looking forward to the most about this performance?
RL
I am looking forward to being in the Broward Center, which is just a wonderful theatre to sing in. It’s a beautiful theatre to look out and see a huge audience. I am also looking forward to singing this glorious music. It’s a piece you feel like you can let the horse out of the cage. You have the symphony behind you and the chorus, and you can just dig in and sing your heart out.
DP RL
Is Beethoven one of your musical influences?
Oh, yes, for sure. We studied him a lot in school. He never wrote any operas and I am primarily an opera singer so I work a lot with Verdi and Wagner and all these opera composers, but Beethoven is a composer that you must know in order to perform his music. There’s no dancing around the fact. You must have a solid technique in order to sing his music because it is hard to sing and the way he writes and sets everything to music. He is a giant in the classical music field.
DP
What do you think the music world would be like if we never had Beethoven?
RL
Pretty boring [laughs]. Beethoven allowed other composers to step out of the box and not be so structured in what they were doing and writing. He kind of set the precedence for composers being allowed to be artists and express themselves and not adhere to all the rules that were placed before him.
