SUNSERVE PROVIDING FOR OUR TRANSGENDER POPULATION
By Steven O. Evans, PhD
O
utClique magazine celebrates all letters of the LGBTQA+ rainbow. Our South Florida community has something for everyone, no matter what gender, sexual orientation, or group with which you identify. We also have numerous community outreach programs. SunServe has been a staple providing numerous counseling services. OutClique had the privilege of talking to Misty Eyez, SunServe's Training Coordinator & Transgender Services Case Manager, but also known as their Mind Expander!
OutClique: Tell us about SunServe. Misty Eyez: SunServe was created in 2002 as the first social and human services agency to serve the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) community in South Florida. SunServe originally focused on providing low to no-cost mental health counseling and senior services for LGBTQ people and has evolved into a thriving organization helping over 5,000 people a year. Our goal is to provide high quality, culturally relevant care for all, with an emphasis on helping those in financial need, minorities, youth, seniors, women, transgender people, people living with HIV, and those with lifechallenging physical or emotional conditions. We also offer a myriad of education and training services. Unfortunately, even in 2019, LGBTQ individuals face health disparities and societal stigma that makes the assistance SunServe provides critical to the well-being of our community.
OCQ ME
How did you get involved with SunServe?
That is a funny story. I never really knew anything about SunServe, but when it was time for me to get my name and gender marker changed, I asked around to see
14 | OutClique.com
who could help me. Someone told me I needed to call Santi at SunServe. When I arrived at SunServe, I met Mark Ketchem, the Executive Director, who saw a large and lovely woman walk into the office and recognized something in me - an “it factor or a presence and his wheels must have started to spin. He got my contact info from Santi and called me in to meet with him and brainstorm some ideas. The Transgender community is a large component to the LGBTQ Community here in South Florida and he wanted to see how SunServe could better assist this community. As a lifelong advocate for the LGBTQ+ community, I easily slid into my position at SunServe.
OCQ provide?
ME
What are the Transgender services that you and SunServe
I actually wear a couple of hats at SunServe. My first job is as an Educator, Trainer / Mind Expander. I just mentioned I've been a lifelong Advocate for the LGBTQ+ Community, and I have been an entertainer in South Florida for the last 16 years. My goal as an educator / trainer at SunServe is to expand and combine my talents as I go into the business world teaching LGBTQ/Transgender tolerance and acceptance through understanding.
I do two types of Trainings. The Basic 2.5/3 Hour LGBTQ+ training that will provide participants with a more inclusive perspective of the entire LGBTQQAAAI2SP community and then it goes a bit more in depth with understanding transgender individuals. They will learn about the gender spectrum, gender identity, as well as the history and life experiences of transgender individuals. They will also learn how to serve the population more effectively by gaining an understanding of the transgender community. This session will provide participants the skills on how to better relate with LGBTQI co-workers and students. To help participants to be able to address transgender issues in a more informed manner. To help participants gain a historical perspective of transgender issues from a social, political and economic viewpoint. It will also help participants gain a clear perspective on how to address our diverse population of students, faculty and staff, such as those from the LGBTQ+ community in a respectful, legal and appropriate fashion. My second job stemmed from the heart I have for my community. When I transitioned I did it all alone, without any help or guidance from anyone. With the help of Google, I found how to do things I felt I needed to do. That is a very scary and lonely place to be, and I would not wish that on anyone. I let Mark know I wanted to help my Trans Brothers and Sisters on their journey. So, I am also a Case Manager, essentially holding the hands of my Trans Clients so that they are not alone on their journey. Helping them navigate the many, many roadblocks and hurdles in their path, to trans competent care and services. (Hormone Replacement Therapy, Health Insurance, HIV Care, or PrEP as HIV Prevention, Name / Gender Marker Changes, Laser Hair Removal, Electrolysis, Support Groups, Financial Independence, Therapy / WPATH, to name a few). Many Trans people struggle with selflove and self-acceptance, leading reclusive and isolated lives. As a case manager, I believe in wrap around care and encourage peer and
social support as well. I try to organize a monthly Safe-T-in Numbers event where we go into the world to do something fun in public, like the fair or a carnival or a museum etc.
OCQ ME
What are your seminars like?
Well, I think my trainings are FUN. Often times I go into a training and I can tell the participants have NO Desire to be there and attend yet another boring Powerpoint Training. That is where the entertainer in me comes out and I make the learning FUN and exciting instead of a boring lecture.
OCQ
What advice would you give someone that may be questioning as transgender?
ME
My first advice is if your questioning your gender, or having these thoughts then you are trans. My second thing I would tell them is that, “You are not alone, you have many many trans siblings and we can help you. My final advice would be to reach out and call me 954-764-5150 extension 126 or email me at MistyEyez@SunServe.org and I will do anything I can to help you.

THE LEADERS OF WILTON MANORS GOVERNMENT AN ALL LGBT+ TEAM WITH A VISION FOR SOUTH FLORIDA By Steven O. Evans, PhD Photos By Michael Murphy Photographic
S
trong leadership is needed even more so now in our government. Our local Wilton Manors mayor, vice mayor, and commissioners gave OutClique magazine some insight into their backgrounds and what’s in store for our city. But even more unique, our local branch boasts an all LGBT+ team. They are working to make a difference for businesses, residents, and visitors. They are promoting our local travel industry that sees over 1.5 million LGBTQA+ travelers to Broward County alone, according to the Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau. OutClique had the privilege of talking to our city officials of Wilton Manors, FL. 28 | OutClique.com
MAYOR JUSTIN S. FLIPPEN How did you get started in politics? My path towards public service began after I participated in the American Legion Boys State High School program and shortly thereafter in college when I interned for U.S. Senator Bob Graham. My view of government being of, for, and by the people as an instrument to foster and promote an improved quality of life took root back then and remains part of my political perspective as a public servant. I became involved in student government at Florida Atlantic University, first as a student senator and ultimately as the student body president, becoming Florida’s first openly gay student body president. The experience as a young adult serving others to the best of my ability as their elected public servant was rewarding and instructive then as it continues to be now as a city mayor and member of the city commission. What is one thing you would want our readers to know about you? I love public service and take serving others very seriously, but I try not to take life too seriously. You need to know how to have fun doing what you love. For leisure, I love experiencing our country and world, especially visiting our National Parks. This year I completed a bucket list item by visiting all 50 of our United States. To date, I have visited 293 of the 418 sites managed by the National Park Service. What is your vision for Wilton Manors? I have a dream for our city to become a place where it becomes even more desirable to stroll along our sidewalks and shop in our galleries and places of day and evening interest. We have some of the tools in place with our adopted economic strategic plan, but it takes more than an adopted plan to ensure the economic viability of a city. It takes
commitment and consistency of action from the city commission and all stakeholders to make the plan a reality and demonstrate why “Life’s just better here.” We need to be strategic about how we rewrite our city code of ordinances. Codes that lessen bureaucracy without compromising residential quality of life are key. Codes that keep our commitment to forward thinking green building and construction standards must be adopted and strengthened. Codes that don’t use 20th century standards of traditional parking when our city is close to two decades into the 21st century where mobility is the model and residents and visitors alike have a wide range of transportation options including Uber, Lyft, and even walking to get around town must be considered. Progress as a community can and should be a good thing for us. I wasn’t elected to stay behind the times and keep doing the same thing that worked 20 years ago. Those, whom I strive to serve to the best of my ability, elected me to keep our city current, strong, and responsive to their concerns and requests. From following up on our AARP recognized livable community designation, to fiscal stewardship of our residents’ hard-earned tax dollars, to preparing for sea level rise and the effects of climate change, there are many opportunities of success before us. And I for one want to meet these challenges head on. Our discussion on these and other planning items is sure to yield some optimal results. We owe it to ourselves to have the courage to work on the challenges facing our community and not ignore them. VICE MAYOR TOM GREEN How did you get started in politics? I seem to have always been interested in politics and policy. Back when I was in high school I ran for student council. While I was a professor at Broward College I was elected OutClique.com | 29
President of the Faculty Senate and President of the Faculty Union. I worked my way up in the union to the state level and eventually was elected to a seat on the National Education Board of Directors. I then was elected as a commissioner on the Central Broward Water Control District. Finally I was lucky enough to be elected to the Wilton Manors City commission in 2008. What is your vision for Wilton Manors? To become a cleaner, greener, walkable city with a more attractive environment and a tree canopy along Wilton Drive. I want to offer transportation options that would eliminate the one car, one person equation. And our city must remain one of the most tolerant and inclusive in the country. We want to increase the profile of our city so that it truly becomes a national and international LGBT destination. Mayor Justin S. Flippen
What is one thing you would want our readers to know about you? For decades I have worked for greater inclusion and rights for the LGBT community. I was one of the founders of the Dolphin Democrats over 30 years ago and worked for greater LGBT rights for teachers through the National Education Association. And in November I was elected as President of the LGBT Local Officials of the National League of Cities. This constituency group within the NLC is composed of openly gay elected officials throughout the United States. Our purpose is to encourage LGBT municipal officials, and their supporters, in the organization and programs of the National League of Cities. COMMISSIONER GARY RESNICK How did you get started in politics? I ran for office in 1997 to make a change in my community.
Vice Mayor Tom Green

What is one thing you would want our readers to know about you?
We love pets and spending time with our rescued Golden Retrievers. What is your vision for Wilton Manors? A thriving urban village with attractive wellmaintained safe neighborhoods, excellent recreational and park amenities, diverse businesses, and a lively downtown. COMMISSIONER JULIE A. CARSON How did you get started in politics? My first influential experience in the political world was when I was a junior at Germantown (Memphis) High School. I was selected as one of 500 young women to attend Girls State, a mock state governmental program of which I was elected Governor. I was then chosen to attend Girls Nation, a federal mock government and educational program held annually in Washington DC, where I continued to serve as a Legislative Aide for several summers. These experiences first sparked my love for and interest in public service. In College, I worked for a US Congressman in Nashville and was fully immersed in the national scene. My desire to serve as a City Commissioner in Wilton Manors was prompted by a conversation with then Mayor Gary Resnick and nurtured by the members of the Dolphin Democrats.
Commissioner Gary Resnick
Commissioner Julie A. Carson
What is one thing you would want our readers to know about you? I would like readers to know that I hope my good deeds will leave a positive impact on our community, and perhap the world. What is your vision for Wilton Manors? Wilton Manors is a model community for all to emulate. My vision and hope for the Island City is that we will stand for all that is good, right, and just in the world. We will serve as a beacon for equality, diversity, sound public policy, and embracing the unique in those

that claim our City as home and by extension, people everywhere who need a safe space and community to live their meaningful lives. COMMISSIONER PAUL J. ROLLI How did you get started in politics? I have been actively involved in the City over the past eight years through my involvement as President of the Central Area Neighborhood Association, former Chairman of the Budget Review Committee and as a regular attendee at many city meetings and events. My motivation for seeking public office is my strong sense of duty for public service and running for public office was a natural next step to serve the residents. My civic and professional experience enables me to make meaningful contributions to the well-being of Wilton Manors. What is your vision for Wilton Manors? My vision is that Wilton Manors will become a model for effective government, inclusivity and a great quality of life where we can enjoin our small-town spirit with our desire for larger city amenities. We need to decide what we want Wilton Manors to become and that vision needs to be created with the involvement of everyone. I look forward to being part of that initiative. What is one thing you would want our readers to know about you? I am passionate about the well-being of Wilton Manors. It’s been my home for 12 years. The residents are my family and I am honored to be part of the next generation of leadership. I will work tirelessly to help improve life for the residents. I have a history of working hard. At age 14, I had a humble start when I walked two miles to a golf course and caddied for $5 a day. 32 | OutClique.com
AFTERGLOW TWO - PLUS ONE?
By Steven O. Evans, PhD
A
fter a 14-month run in New York City, Afterglow comes to South Florida. Ronnie Larsen Productions is proud to be presenting one of the first productions of this play outside of New York. Afterglow is a complex play about monogamy and the risks involved with an open marriage. It is a raw, oneact play exploring the emotional, intellectual, and physical connections between three men and the broader implications within their relationships. OutClique was able to talk to Ronnie about the show and it’s premier in Wilton Manors. OutClique: How were you able to bring this Broadway show to Wilton Manors? Ronnie Larson: I applied for the rights for South Florida knowing the community would want to see this play. I am excited that the rights were given to me and after seeing the NYC production of Afterglow. I’m certain our community will respond positively.
OCQ
How does the show challenge our traditional paradigm of relationships?
RL
By featuring a committed couple in an open relationship, I hope it opens dialogue between the audience members. While monogamy is the default in most straight relationships, our community does operate under fewer restrictions and taboos.
Afterglow should begin discussions between couples about their own relationship structure.
OCQ RL
What will the audience take away from seeing Afterglow?
OCQ RL
Should audiences expect a drama or a comedy?
OCQ RL
Will we fall in love with any other characters?
I think the audience will take a fresh look at traditional marriage structures and give some thought to the pluses and pitfalls of our ability to mold our own gay relationships without these strictures. We don’t have to follow traditional monogamy, but should we?
Afterglow doesn’t fall into easy categorization. All drama has comedic undertones and all comedies have a serious basis. Afterglow will have many such contradictions. It’s more important that the audience leave thinking about what the play means to them. And, that they enjoyed themselves most of all!
Each of the three characters will appeal to different people. Each of the actors has an appeal to certain people in the audience. How can you just pick one to fall in love with?
The show will be presented in the larger mainstage theater of Wilton Theater Factory. It opens February 14, 2019 and runs through March 10, 2019. Tickets can be purchased at www.RonnieLarsen.com.

WHERE ARE YOU MY LOVE? By Eric Noel Roman
Happy New Year! Bam! Out go celebratory decorations as we welcome in red heartshaped balloons and a plethora of sweets to put the most resilient pancreas into a diabetic coma. The aisles at the local drug stores are lined with over the top expressions of love. All one can think is, "How much does love cost? Love has to be given away? Why is love expressed in gifts?” Realistically, love is just a feeling. Nothing more. However, that feeling is probably the most sought after emotion. I can be More coveted than happiness and pleasure. "I love to be happy." "I love to indulge."
L
ove is a feeling that most people cannot describe consistently. It is something that everyone seeks. A little known fact is that love is not an external stimulator. We are equipped with all of the tools to make love happen. For years, I watched friends date men and women, seeking this holy grail of emotions, and leading down paths of interesting situations. But many of these relationships still had no love. As I began searching for this mysterious idea, I encountered some exciting circumstances. I looked online, phone apps, bars, and nightclubs, all the places people meet for whatever reasons. I left all options available for love. All doors were left open. But all of them had brick walls behind them. Trying to figure out why love was so unattainable was depressing. I began telling myself that I was the problem. I am weird. I realized then I hated being “me.” Wait a second. Absorb that for just one moment. I started looking for a forced love and seeking approval wherever I could find it. That is where I built unhealthy and unbalanced relationships. All this because I was seeking love outside of
me. I was never happy and just wanted more approval. One day, after opening my eyes mid-afternoon from a long night of work (DJ life is always late to bed), I blurted out, "I am done with this!" My wake up routine was always, check social media and see who has "liked" my posts. Seeking that approval, that love. I was over seeking it. I realized I was living through others because I was unhappy with me. I began the arduous task of erasing my bad habits of not being proud of my accomplishments. I got the ball rolling on new ideas that I would like to see happen. I opened up about my anger. I began doing things for others because I wanted to. One deed after another, and I began feeling better. I realized love for me and from me, was the best love I could find. I stopped living for others’ love. I changed the thought process that love is an emotion received from others. I began to remind myself that love is a feeling from within. Love is a thing that was much easier to attain than I had thought. Love is a feeling that rules worlds, not from a galaxy far, far away. Love is always within grasp. I made one change. I began to focus on simply loving me.
As a Dj by trade, fitness lover by hobby, FIU graduate, and simply trying to be happy, I am your writer, Eric Noel Roman. 36 | OutClique.com
HAPPY SAINT VALENTINE’S DAY By Rev. Patrick Rogers, MDiv.
I
n 2002, when I first entered seminary, we were assigned an end of semester project called “relationships.” I was 46 and had just ended a 23 year same-sex relationship. I wanted my classmates to know about long term same-sex relationships and that they do exist. I chose to create a video interviewing people who I had known and were in long term same-sex relationships. I worked with couples who had been together for 18, 25, 35, and 68 years, totaling almost 150 years collectively. The male couple who had been in a relationship for over 68 years made an impression on me that I will always remember. I made an appointment to film an interview with them at their beautiful high-rise condo on Galt Ocean Mile in Fort Lauderdale, FL. One of the guys stopped the interview halfway through and wanted to show me a picture. He brought out a black and white photograph from when they were in their early twenties and on the beach in Fort Lauderdale. They were wearing bathing suits! “You guys were hot!” I said. They responded, “We still are!” And they were correct. At 88 years old, they were
38 | OutClique.com
indeed still hot. Their love for one another was a beacon. They told me that one had been recently diagnosed with a life-threatening health issue and they were glad to share their story. I heard their journey of how they met and fell in love. They both were serving in the army during World War II and fought together in the same fox hole. It’s ironic that they were fighting for freedom yet when they returned home victorious, they were not legally entitled to marry one another. One story of Saint Valentine of Rome is that he was imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry and for ministering to Christians persecuted under the Roman Empire. Sounds like a saint to me, indeed! At the end of the video interview, I asked if either of them had any regrets. The reply from one was that he had regrets that even though they had fought for our freedom, they were never able to legally marry. This Valentine’s Day, I know that they are reunited in heaven and are joyful that same-sex marriage is now a freedom.
JOE POSA AS JOAN RIVERS February 15 – March 3, 2019 at Wilton Theater Factory. Ticket info at www.JoePosa.com “Certainly, the figure in the outrageous black and gold ruffled coat and black pants on stage at New York’s Metropolitan Room sounds and looks a lot like Joan Rivers. As someone fortunate enough to have interviewed the real Rivers, the similarities of voice and presence between Joe Posa and Rivers are resonant and mesmerizing,” says Tim Tim Teeman of The Daily Beast. Joe’s other famous characters include Liza Minnelli, Barbra Streisand, and Michael Jackson. Joe shared some tender moments with Joan, in her one and only performance in Provincetown, MA in July 2014. When they parted, she said, “Continue to do me in your shows ‘disrespectfully.’” They laughed and parted, assuming they would see each other again soon. Having performed alongside Ms. Rivers on two separate occasions, Posa, who Joan called, “Her favorite Joan Rivers impersonator,” has since joined forces with “Fashion Police” Executive Producer (and the real Miss Rivers’ joke writer), Tony Tripoli, for a hilarious 90 minute tribute, Joan Rivers Back & Bitter Than Ever! The show begins with Tony Tripoli sharing his shocking memories of working for Ms. Rivers, the trouble they got into, the joke that E! refused to air, and how outrageous she was, both offstage and on. Then Tony passes the baton to Joe Posa, who brilliantly recreates the comedy legend’s look, mannerisms, and signature frenetic energy. Posa does an hour of Joan, and you’ll laugh so hard you’ll swear Joan is back for one last performance. Seeing is believing! After sold out shows worldwide, Joe is thrilled to present this “very naughty but so much fun” evening to his South Florida audiences and neighbors. 40 | OutClique.com

WORKING FOR SOUTH FLORIDA’S LGBTQ YOUTH JULIAN CAVAZOS
By Denny Patterson
J
ulian Cavazos has worked as a volunteer and board member in the non-profit sector for the past 30 years. When he participated in experiential learning courses in 2006, he made a commitment to himself that one day he would make these courses and activities available for LGBTQ youth at no cost to them. Therefore, Julian’s Fountain of Youth (JFOY) was born. This non-profit organization creates opportunities for LGBTQ youth to partake in experiential learning activities, career development workshops, and lifeenrichment strategies. Julian has dedicated the past year to making this organization a success. In addition, he, along with some friends, created a monthly event called the Marlin Beach Tea 2.0 where all proceeds benefit JFOY. I had the pleasure of chatting more with Julian about the success of JFOY, Marlin Beach, and what we can expect from the organization in the future. Can you start off by telling me more about JFOY organization? What kind of work does the organization do, and what kind of programs are offered? JFOY is a 501©(3) providing community services and support for the LGBTQ youth and youth groups both locally and nationally. We send local youth to camps around the country at no cost to them, host an annual six day retreat locally for 25 LGBTQ youth from around the country at no cost to them or their families, together with SunServe to host their LGBTQ Youth Pride Prom with over 175 youth participants, sponsored Trans Youth short story film, host monthly Youth Group Meet and Greets, and helped eight local LGBTQ youth get free eye exams and eyewear. Tell us about your monthly event Marlin Beach Tea 2.0 that helps benefit the organization. Marlin Beach Tea 2.0 is the result of me and a friend trying to create an event that would allow us to enjoy the beautiful South Florida 50 | OutClique.com
weather while bringing community together to raise money for JFOY. We went to two different state parks and it was obvious we weren’t going to be able to create an event that would be profitable. It was then that I thought of creating an event at The Sanctuary Church courtyard outside of the auditorium on the Middle River. We put together a committee of over 20 local friends and together came up with the Marlin Beach Tea 2.0 concept. One hundred percent of the money made is donated to JFOY. FJOY is not the only non-profit geared towards LGBTQ youth, correct? How do you stand out from the other non-profits in the area? We are not the only LGBTQ non-profit youth organization in South Florida. We differ from other organizations in that we are an enhancement to other LGBTQ non-profits, which is why we are invited to participate or speak at their group meetings. The Marlin Beach Tea 2.0 event just celebrated its one-year anniversary. What were some of the highlights from the past year? Marlin Beach Tea 2.0’s success is due to our amazing community and volunteers. I would have to say the highlight of the past year is not so much what the event did, but what our community did following the hijacking attempt of our event. It was amazing to see how our community came together to put a stop to it. The phone calls, emails, texts, and social media response was truly heartwarming. For anyone who would like to be involved, what can they do? Anyone who would like to get involved in both our non-profit and Marlin Beach Tea 2.0 event should email me at Info@JFOY.org or call me at (954) 594-3437.

OCQ: What sets Pronto Care apart from other urgent care services? Pronto: We have very affordable self pay rates and plans, including our Pronto Preferred Plan. SERVICES TO SAVE YOU TIME IN 2019 Rod Davis President, BBB Serving Southeast FL and the Caribbean
A
fter the holidays and as we start into the new year, I always like to take a few moments to reset my life, see what I can do to simplify my world and treat myself (I have been so good I absolutely deserve it and so do you). I am lucky to have two happy and healthy parents, and my mother shared some advice with me that still resonates today. She hired a house cleaner and I asked her why since she always took pleasure in keeping a beautiful and clean home. Her response said it all, “I have cleaned enough toilets in my life and you can never play enough golf. So, I followed her lead and hired a great cleaning company. There are many quality providers in Southeast Florida like www.AllDiamondCleaning. com, www.CastaliaCleaning.com and www. MrKleanFla.com. You can find local cleaners in your area at www.BBB.org/SEFL. It is always good to interview a potential cleaning company to make sure they are bonded and licensed, use the type of products you prefer (environmentally friendly), provide the full complement of services you seek (do they do windows or deep clean) and to see how responsive they are to your suggestions to clean your home the way you want it done.
your water bill as well. You can find quality companies like: www.FloridaFakeGrass.com at www.BBB.org/SEFL to obtain quotes and information to help you determine if this is an option you would like to consider. LOW MAINTENANCE LANDSCAPE Another option to reduce time and effort to maintain a beautiful lawn can be achieved by working with experienced landscape designers. A landscape designer can help create a Florida oasis that requires little water, maintenance and looks great. You can obtain quotes from Landscape Architects at https://seflorida.app.bbb.org/connect Be clear about your goals and provide the same guidance to each business you interview so you can compare each proposal to settle on the one that works best for you.
Lawn maintenance and lawn care is another time consuming task for homeowners and renters. In the hot summer months doing basic lawn care is a demanding chore and Floridians are exploring several options to minimize lawn maintenance.
LANDSCAPE MAINTENANCE Cutting lawns, taking care of flower beds and trimming trees is another way to spend time away from work, unless you would rather be spending time at the beach or with friends. Create an inventory of the services you want done to your lawn/landscape (fertilizer, treatment for pests, edging, mulching, tree trimming, grass cutting, cutting back bushes) so you and your contractor have shared expectations for the work and the costs. Having a standardized list will also let you compare quotes from several quality companies to find the business that makes you feel like you are a priority for them at a value that works for you.
ARTIFICIAL LAWNS While artificial lawns are not for everyone, they have become much more realistic looking, provide a low maintenance option and since they do not require water, can reduce
It is often late in the evening when I get home and then I have the chore of cooking a meal that is quick and nutritious. Businesses are stepping in to offer food options that make it easier and less time consuming for consumers.
92 | OutClique.com
Many consumers are finding prepared food options a great time and stress reliever, but there have also been problems. Some of these services require long-term contracts and advance payments and like any startup industry, some of the businesses do not measure up to customer expectations and some have closed their doors with consumers still being owed meals/services from advance payments. Locally, we have a business that offers this service, Fit2go (www.Fit2GoMeal. com). Fit2go lets customers pay as they go so you do not risk losing your money. There are many other national services in this space as well. Make sure you can try out the service first so that it works for you, evaluate the food and delivery options, review all costs (meal costs, annual fees) and find the option that meets your taste and expectations. These services should make your palate happy, while at the same time they simplify your life, and if that is not happening there are always other options.
relying on a third party is not as predictable). As always, it is a good idea to go to www. BBB.org and see the types of complaints and reviews consumers are posting about a business. A quick review of Shipt and Instacart can help you determine if grocery delivery is something you want to consider. Some of the issues raised by consumers include: problems with delivery, added fees that are allegedly not disclosed, higher prices per item compared to shopping directly and other billing issues related to membership fees. Most of the delivery options include an annual fee to obtain “free delivery for orders over a specified amount. Additionally, the fees may include a service fee, tip, and as indicated in the complaints from consumers, there may also be mark ups on items purchased using a delivery service. You should carefully consider the full cost of a service and the potential pros and cons to determine if grocery delivery service is something you want to consider.
Another potential time saver for consumers is grocery delivery. Online services are available in most markets to enable consumers to shop online and have groceries delivered to their home for a fee. Shipt and Instacart are two options available in South Florida. Since these services are relatively new, consumers need to carefully review the services and prices to determine if the potential time savings is worth the costs and the loss of control over the process (you know how long it will take to go to Publix and get the groceries you need and
Some programs and services may reduce a stress line or two while giving you some extra time to share with your loved one. Unfortunately, when you hire the wrong business, the result can be more time lost and aggravation, so always take time to check out a business before you hire them, especially when you are entering into any kind of annual membership or commitment. Like a bad marriage, it is easier to get married than it is to get a divorce so invest the time to make sure you have the right partner.

DISCO DIVA ROYALTY AN INTERVIEW WITH THELMA HOUSTON By Gregg Shapiro
H
ouston, who has a long history of love and support for the LGBTQ community, is one of the dance music legends performing on the Ultimate Disco Cruise (www.UltimateDiscoCruise.com), February 14-19, 2019. She was kind enough to answer a few questions before the cruise. Gregg Shapiro: What does it mean to you to be performing on that cruise? Thelma Houston: What does it mean? It means, Thank you, Jesus! I can work [laughs]! Of course it means that! I just did a show about two weeks ago at the Westbury (Music Fair in NY) and some of the same people that are going to be on the cruise were in the show. It was called “Saturday Night Disco Fever.” I’m telling you, it was like old home week. At some point, all of us, The Trammps, Evelyn (King), Peaches & Herb, people like that, over the years, we’ve all appeared on shows together. It was so much fun, being with each other, watching each other’s soundchecks, hanging out backstage and catching up. It means a lot to me to be doing this. But more importantly, what it means to me is that something we created, the music, many years ago is still valuable enough that people still want to see us. That we can still be doing our work; that’s a blessing. I feel very fortunate and I’m thrilled to be doing this.
GS TH
What can fans expect from your set on the cruise?
GS
There is a long history of mutual love, affection, respect and admiration
I’m going to keep them moving, keep them up, keep them dancing and keep them going. I’m working out every day so that I’ll have the energy to do that [laughs].

between you and the LGBTQ community, including your fantastic performances at different Pride festivals. What does your LGBTQ fanbase mean to you?
TH
It means a lot. Before I recorded “Don’t Leave Me This Way” I had a lot of support. My family was in Long Beach and I moved up to L.A. to be closer to the recording studio and what I had to do up here. My fans and my friends, were my hairdresser, my dressmaker, my make-up people. These were my support. We used to hang out a lot and go dancing at Catch One and all of that. Then, this terrible thing came along that was taking away our friends. We didn’t know what was going on. At that point we were doing what we could to help our friends who were sick. If somebody needed a little help with finances or somebody needed their dog walked, we did what we could, especially as things started getting organized. I’ve been there for all of that. In return, after the Disco Demolition in Chicago and disco started to get bad press and the major agencies no longer had a dance department, and I didn’t have a large R&B base, even though “Don’t Leave Me This Way” crossed over, when that backlash came and I couldn’t get work at other places, [the gay] community would hire me. I had work. I was blessed to work continually. There was a mutual love and respect because they supported me and I supported them.
GS TH
I got a little choked up just then. That’s very powerful. Well, that’s the truth. That’s where that comes from. It’s everlasting!

IPL Photofacial for Clear and Smooth Skin
L
et’s talk about IPL. What is it? IntensePulsed Light (IPL) is a technology used by cosmetic and medical practitioners to perform various skin treatments for aesthetic and therapeutic purposes, including hair removal, and photorejuvenation, as well as alleviating dermatologic diseases such as acne. IPL uses controlled light in specific wavelengths to alleviate the inflammation, redness, pimples, and uneven skin tones. IPL offers a gentle, long-lasting solution for those suffering from rosacea by providing a gradual and natural improvement to the skin's appearance. When you
are looking in the mirror wondering whether an IPL treatment is right for you. IPL treatments offer a refresh, maintenance, or any level of enhancement as a perfect way to see awesome results that look natural and provide that smooth, youthful and fresh look. The before and after photos of our model shows clear signs of rosacea minimization and some removal. This is after only one treatment, showing how you can already quickly see results. On average, three to four IPL treatments are needed to clear current rosacea, with another treatment recommended
about once a year for maintenance purposes. These treatments are relatively quick, while treating the entire face takes about 20-30 minutes. IPL is also a great way to build collagen which will occur simultaneously during treatment. Collagen acts like the scaffolding for our skin. It is what holds our skin (and our look) in place and over time as we age the firmness will diminish so we are constantly working to strengthen and refresh our collagen. IPL is one treatment modality for collagen induction amongst others available such as microneedling which is another treatment modality.

GOOD AS GOLD AN INTERVIEW WITH SIR ARI GOLD By Gregg Shapiro
S
ir Ari Gold has a story to tell, so listen up. Singing and performing since childhood, Gold’s queer breakout moment occurred near the dawn of this century with the release of his award-winning debut album. Working primarily in the dance music realm, Gold had his share of club sensations, and released a handful of albums. His most recent recording is 2015’s Soundtrack to Freedom under the GoldNation banner. Not limiting himself to music, Gold models, does speaking engagements and remains a visible LGBTQ rights activist. Gregg Shapiro: When I first met you, you were just good old Ari Gold. Now you are Sir Ari Gold. When did the knighting take effect? Ari Gold: I knelt in front of a drag queen which I think is something every gay boy should do considering it was drag queens that led the Stonewall rebellion! I got knighted by the Imperial Court of New York. It was at the 24th annual Night of a Thousand Gowns in 2010. It’s one of the longest standing human rights events and organizations. I embraced the title because receiving recognition from my own LGBTQIA+ community is always the most meaningful to me. My work has been so much about telling queer stories and being the kind of gay pop star I didn’t have growing up. It also helps with Google searches after HBO stole my name and brand for a character that represents the opposite of what I am about. Life sure is funny!
GS
I’ve been covering your music for almost 20 years. In what ways would you say that your songwriting has evolved since the beginning?
AG
I have always poured out my heart and soul in my music. When I first started writing and recording my own music, it was a big deal to take the risk of putting
108 | OutClique.com
male pronouns in my songs. But as I continued to make albums, I felt it was my responsibility not just to add the gay twist to traditional pop love songs, but to more profoundly describe the specificity of what it’s like for me to live life as a gay man at this time. Transport Systems, my third album, was the first album that I was able to conceive of from beginning to end as a concept album. But my latest album Soundtrack to Freedom was such a fulfilling experience because when I worked in the studio with Bob Sandee we weren’t on the clock. And that allowed for so much exploration, inspiration and experimentation. All five of my studio albums reflect the pain, heartache, joy, passion and love I was going through at that time. I could tell you exactly where, what, when and who about every song I’ve ever written. Hopefully the writing evolves as I do and I can hone in on what I really want to say and how clear and simple can I be in saying it. It’s cool when you can come up with clever or evocative ways of telling a story, but simplicity is the ultimate goal I think.
GS
The first track, “Opening Score,” contains the line, “Be the change that you want to see.” In what ways are you doing that?
AG
By always trying my best to treat people how I want to be treated -- The Golden Rule! By putting light, hope, and love into the world through music, storytelling and performance. By continually working on myself. By staying engaged and mindful about what’s happening in the world with the knowledge that my actions, thoughts and behaviors on a micro personal scale do have an effect on the world at large.

WHO’S YOUR DADDY?
DADDY ISSUES PREMIERS IN SOUTH FLORIDA By Steven O. Evans, PhD
N
ominated in 2017 for Best Off Broadway Play, Daddy Issues tells the story of Donald who is trying to live his life as a gay man in 1980s in New York. His parents are in denial about his lifestyle, disapprove of his career choice, and question his flair for decoration. Donald is always upfront about being gay but to get his family to stop kvetching, Donald needs a son. With the help of his ballsy best friend (Henrietta) and rising drag queen (Levi) Donald hires the ten-year-old kid from downstairs to play his son. But what could go wrong? This fast-paced new comedy, from the wit of David Goldyn, takes audiences on a rollicking risqué ride to remind us just how far we’ll go for family. Daddy Issues comes to the Willow Theater (300 S Military Trail, Boca Raton, FL 33486) on March 1 - 10, 2019. For more information go to www.DaddyIssuesThePlay.com or www.WillowTheatre.org/Daddy-Issues or call (561) 347-3948. OutClique magazine talked to David Goldyn, the show’s director and producer. OutClique: So, tell us up front, is the show hilarious and why? David: This is based on a true story that happened to me. My parents always knew I was gay but they were relentless in wanting a grandson. I mean relentless! To get them off my back once and for all, I told them I had an out of wedlock son with a girlfriend I had in college. They wanted to meet the son immediately if not sooner. In real life, I kept this charade up for 45 minutes. In the play, I have this charade going on for over a week. Donald’s need to please his parents, and the parents need to have a grandchild at any cost
creates all of the elements of farce: mistaken identity, little white lies, cross dressing, and door-slamming. It’s a total crowd pleaser. Who can’t relate to trying to please one’s parents? OCQ: What is your favorite part of the show? David: My favorite part of the play is the happy ending which you will have to see to believe. Who doesn’t love a happy ending! If only life could have happy endings! Massages can have happy endings, but life is tricky. OCQ: Are you allowed to tell us if Donald resolves things with his parents? David: Yes and no. Are parents ever satisfied? I’ll explain. One critic in New York called it, “a sitcom waiting to happen.” Daddy Issues has subsequently been in sitcom development. The need for Donald to please his parents and himself goes on for more than 24 episodes in my sitcom outline of episodes. So stay tuned for the sitcom where things are resolved but things are not resolved. OCQ: What’s it like being both Jewish and gay? David: Oy. (I’m here. I’m Queer. Oy vey is mir!) OCQ: How have previous audiences received Daddy Issues? David: They loved it but in different ways. In New York we had a largely cosmopolitan and often straight audience and they laughed at the situations and the jokes but think some of the gay humor went over their heads. In Orlando, it was a gay theatre and the audience got all of the gay jokes. One critic said this is a unique play that could please a gay theatre audience as well as a senior citizen condo! It’s the risque show you can bring grandma and the kids to as well as a date.

KEY WEST BEAR WEEKEND 2018 ON THE PROWL

here were at least two men of color participants at the coronation of Mr. Key West Bear 2018, in addition to bilinguals, other nationalities, and a variety of age ranges. That’s more than anyone accustomed to the demographics of the Florida Keys’ LGBTQ+ community would have expected. This fit perfectly with Bear World Magazine (BWM) and Shane Tate’s (organizer of Fire Island Bear Weekend and NYC event circuit aficionado) message of inclusion. Take one look at the International Bear Brotherhood Flag and the shades of “fur” can easily be interpreted as the physical composition of this fast growing and diverse segment of gay culture. The presentations of this event team hammered home the notion of inclusivity. Multiple continents, countries, states, body builds, and races were on display at the weekend long festivities. That could be said of Fantasy Fest, Tropical Heat, Bone Island and a slew of other events throughout the year. But this event feels different. This feels more like 120 | OutClique.com
a laid back revival of a part of gay culture that’s not typically spotted strolling down Duval Street. This writer happens to be a tad too young to fully grasp the intricacies of what prompted the breakaway and establishment of bear culture. Similar to most groups that experience initial marginalization, bears rallied behind the need to represent attitudes and appearances that did not fit the streamlined and hairless looks of the then popular culture. Now, evidenced by BWM and Tate’s refusal to dissuade non-hairy or non-burly attendees, the bear community has grown into its own skin and cemented its position of economic and cultural power leading to the expansion of other “bearadjacent” identities including pups, cubs, and otters. All of which you are free to google in your own time. From the arrival of the fire department at the marquee Furball event , let’s blame the smoke machines and not the steamy men , to the

splashdown opener at Island House Resort and even the historical crowning of Mr. Key West Bear , the title ultimately going to Puerto Rican-Dominican Miami local Ryan Acosta. This team got it right. In fact, given Tate’s successful experiences in the New York circuit and teaming up with the forces of Bear World Magazine , a leading bear lifestyle website , this team emerged as the real star of the weekend. It would not be a big surprise if their meticulous calculations and ability to read a room help make this and other events financially viable. Potential sponsors should absolutely keep them on their radar.
Bear Weekend has served to remind local bears , and anyone else who may not fit the mainstream mold , that they should feel emboldened to carve out a bigger portion of the Key West LGBTQ+ community.
