MICHAEL LEEDS

HIS LIFE IN THE THEATER AND THE DEBUT OF BETTE & BARRY

By Mike Jeknavorian

M

ichael Leeds has been involved with many shows, both on and off the stage, including the hit Liza Minnelli vehicle, The Act. I chatted with Leeds about life in the theater and about his musical, Bette & Barry: From Bathhouse to Broadway, which will make its world debut in South Florida in January 2019. MIKE JEKNAVORIAN: You have a background as writer, a director and a performer. Do you consider that you’re all of those equally, or one of them more than the other? MICHAEL LEEDS: I’m a director first and then a writer. I direct theater and I also write plays and screenplays.

MJ

You must have encountered a lot of celebrities during the run of that show. Were you “star struck” around any of them?

ML

The show received so much attention because of Liz and that rubbed off a bit on the dancers. Liza was great about bringing us to her dressing room after the show, and she’d introduce us to whatever celebrities, and there were many, who came backstage to see her. I remember I met Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. I had just taken a shower downstairs, and I ran into them on the stairs wearing only my towel (laughs). I also met Gene Kelly, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Robert De Niro and Al Pacino. But I think the one who had the most impact on me was meeting Jackie O. It was like meeting history.

MJ ML

Of all the shows that you have performed, which was your favorite?

I think the shows I’ve directed have had the most meaning. I directed and choreographed A Little Night Music for the Houston Grand Opera. I worked with Stephen Sondheim for a couple of days before rehearsals, and then he came down to see the 16 | OutClique.com

show. He was very complimentary about it. That was certainly a highlight.

MJ

Let’s talk about your present show, Bette & Barry: From Bathhouse to Broadway. Of course, the first question is, have you met either of them?

ML

I’ve never met Bette. Barry, I met over the phone. I was directing a show called Miracles, which had lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, and music by Stephen Schwartz, Marvin Hamlisch, and David Shire, and we were looking for one more composer. The producer approached Barry Manilow. He was on the coast, and it was arranged that I’d call him that night. I called him, expecting to just chat about the show and what we needed, but instead, he sang and played me a song he had just written an hour before! It was a terrific song, but unfortunately the show never happened.

MJ

It’s common knowledge that Midler and Manilow performed at the Continental Baths in New York City. Did you ever see them there?

ML

I never saw Bette, but I did see Barry perform solo at the baths. Just to be clear, he was on the stage (laughs). And then I saw him when he opened the second act for Bette in one of her tours. No one knew who he was then, so he wasn’t getting the massive response he would receive later after “Could It Be Magic” hit the airwaves.

MJ

Do you think that a vintage bathhouse, with entertainment, could work today?

ML

If the entertainment was as good as Bette, absolutely.

SOUTH FLORIDA SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA’S FAVORITE BARITONE

Neil Nelson

By Denny Patterson

T

he South Florida Symphony Orchestra (SFSO) is bringing audiences one of the best known and most frequently performed operas – George Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess. The story of a disabled black street beggar named Porgy living in the slums of Charleston, this show deals with his attempts to rescue Bess from the clutches of her violent and possessive lover, Crown. Porgy and Bess has a star studded all-black cast presenting a bold mix of modernist classics, ragtime, blues, jazz and spirituals. Playing the leading role is Neil Nelson, a South Florida baritone who is no stranger to the show or the SFSO. Previously playing Jake and several other smaller roles, this is his first time playing Porgy. I had the pleasure of chatting more with Nelson about the upcoming performance and his overall love and passion for this Gershwin classic. Where did your passion for performing come from? Wow, that is a good question. I have always been fairly extroverted, I wouldn’t say I was a shy kid. I had a great music teacher in high school. She was amazing and included all the athletes in her chorus. She would get us excited about performing. I would say it started with my high school music teacher. Tell me more about your character, Porgy. How do you relate to him? I guess the first thing I can say, any character I play, they all go through the human experience. We have all felt loss, gained love, happiness, sadness. In that way, I connect for sure. I have been down the road of having love lost, like most adults have, so I guess I connect with him in that way. There have been times in my life where I have been the underdog and ended up being the champion. Those are ways I can think of off the top of my head. What can audiences expect from this performance?

Audiences can expect great music and great drama. It is such a great story. The American love story. There are so many aspects of life in this show. You have people who are the religious type people, you have the party people, there is a situation where a battered wife is involved. She’s not married, but it’s basically battered wife syndrome to a certain degree. It is argued that Crown is a villain, so to speak, but he’s also a member of the community. There are so many different relationships and I think the audience will expect to see facts of life that they can relate to in so many ways. What do you hope to take away from this experience? Well, to say that I performed my first Porgy, it’s great to have that under my belt. I also hope to grow into this role and I look forward to the fellowship this role brings. As an opera singer, I am quite often the only person of African descent in the room. That does bring about a sense of pride, but with Porgy, you get a lot of talented opera singers of African descent that you almost never get unless you’re doing Porgy and Bess. Do you consider Porgy and Bess to be a controversial show? No, I don’t. I guess some people do and we have to acknowledge that, but I don’t believe it is. It’s not centered around any particular thing I would consider to be a controversial issue. Anyone can pull controversy from any opera or show. Lastly, what’s next for you after Porgy and Bess? Immediately after Porgy and Bess, I’m singing with the Palm Beach Opera as Masetto in Don Giovanni. Immediately after that, I am flying to St. Louis to sing Oroveso in Norma by Vincenzo Bellini.

THE PROGRAM BY TY By Denny Patterson

Photos By Connor Wilkinson (@HonnorConnor) 28 | OutClique.com

I

f you are hoping to commit to your New Year’s resolution of losing weight and eating healthy, Taina “Ty” Dorce is ready to help. With 17 years of experience in the health and fitness industry, her passion for helping others reach and sustain their ultimate fitness goals has been the driving force throughout her career. A personal trainer and group fitness instructor at G21 Fitness in Oakland Park, Ty recently started a new comprehensive fitness, nutrition, and motivational plan called The Program by Ty. Consisting of cleanse, ketosis, and maintenance, Ty will guide you step-bystep through this journey and help you achieve the healthy body you deserve. I had the pleasure of chatting more with Ty about The Program and her passion for health and fitness. Start off by telling me more about your fitness program, The Program by Ty. What’s it all about? The Program is a five-week fitness, nutrition, and motivation plan that includes a sustainable diet, detailed workout schedule, before and after photos, daily weigh-ins, and constant trainer communication all designed to help you achieve your personal best. Why did you want to start this program? I originally created this program based on my clients. Some of them were relying just on our sessions to meet their fitness goals. I overly stressed that the way they ate, their diet, was the most important factor in achieving their goal. So, now I can provide both services, meeting their physical and nutrition needs. When it comes to fitness, what would you say is the ultimate goal? The ultimate goal is to be your best self. I know that sounds so cliché, but it’s true. It’s about you being better today than you were yesterday. What do you hope people gain from The Program by Ty? I tell prospective clients and current ones OutClique.com | 29

that the education is the most important part you will gain through The Program. Learning how, what, and when to eat certain things is a huge game changer. All of our bodies are so different and through the five weeks, you will learn things about how your body responds to certain food. Nutrition is cool. What is your favorite exercise and why? My favorite exercise is anything that gets your heart rate up quickly. From burpees to box jumps! What is the number one advice you recommend to people? To stick with it! No matter how hard it may get, and it will, it may feel like you cannot go any longer. No matter what, stick with it and you will make it to the other side. What is a weight loss fad or trend that people should absolutely stay away from? Any diet that promotes quick results without 30 | OutClique.com

any true work being done. Like shakes, pills, and I even heard of sucking on lollipops. Even though some may think The Program’s five weeks isn’t quick, by the end of the five weeks, you leave walking away with a sustainable diet which hopefully becomes your new lifestyle. Is it possible to lose weight by only eating healthy, but not exercising? Yes, for sure, but you would not be toned and would not have any muscle definition. So, it boils down to what your goals are. Are there any foods that are the best to help lose weight? There really isn’t a best food option to lose weight. The best way to lose weight is to get on a healthy diet and exercise regimen. Do you have a guilty pleasure? Definitely, pizza. I have a three-year-old at home, so I have daily battles, but the one thing I cannot say no to is pizza.

What is one of your favorite success stories? I come from a family of doctors and educators. Never in a million years did I think I could change anyone’s life through health and fitness. All of my clients, from when I started at 17-years-old to today, are all my favorite success stories. Each one I hold close to my heart. How do you keep people motivated? I keep my clients motivated by reminding them why they started this journey. Oftentimes, they get caught up in the minor roadblocks and they want to give up on themselves. I also remind them how far they have come. It's a long road, just enjoy this beautiful journey. How do you keep yourself motivated? I keep myself motivated by reminding myself daily that I am representing my clients, my family, and most importantly, my son. I love feeling and looking my best, so that motivates me also. What are some of the challenges of being a fitness instructor? The biggest issue right now in our industry is the social media trainers. You have these models who are giving expert advice who didn’t go through any proper training. It makes it very difficult to set yourself apart in the social media realm as far as advertising and promotions go. Why do you think obesity is so problematic in the United States? I believe there is more information out now, more than ever, but we seem to still be battling obesity at an alarming rate. Food is an addiction, just like drugs and alcohol. As long as one uses food to suppress a void or an issue, obesity will continue to be an issue. To set up a consultation, visit www.TheProgramByTy.com. SAVE THE RESOLVE FOR YOUR CARPET By Eric Noel Roman

You have a problem? What is your issue? Go resolve it. That's right! Resolutions are used to resolve problems. That is such a great way to start your year. "I have a problem I want to solve." Is it better to set goals? Is it more positive language? The answer is simply, yes. When I began my journey with health and fitness, I would set resolutions. One I remember was quitting smoking. Every year on New Year's Eve it was the same, the countdown and my last cigarette.

T

wo weeks later, I was hiding somewhere lighting up. I could not figure out why I kept going back. Then one day someone presented the idea of positive language. Let me break down the statement, "Quit smoking." The word "quit" is a negative word right away. It is implying a stop, a cease, an end. That is a negative start. Then, in this statement the subject is "smoking," therefore focusing on the negative action. However, if you took your goals into consideration, then saying, "I want to quit smoking," can be a positive proclamation. Set the future target for the desired outcome of either breathing healthier or not losing your breath when going up the stairs. Now that the goal is set positively, there is no focus on the negative behavior. There is not a resolution at hand, but there is a final reward. Once I realized that I wanted to become a faster, stronger runner, I had to take into consideration the things holding me back and replacing them with enriching behaviors. I began setting new goals. I noticed that by simply saying, “At the end of the week, I want to be down to ten smokes and maintaining my

speed an extra forty-five seconds longer," I was already on a positive path. Those words all resonated good things. I took my time to hit the proverbial nail on the head everytime. Week after week, I reminded myself about how well I'm improving, continuously ignoring the, "I am quitting," mentality and aiming at the, "I am succeeding," mentality. Thirty days passed and I knew I had broken my bad habit. I realized I was not craving smokes. I no longer worried if I had a lighter nearby just in case. Instead, I noticed that I always kept my running shoes ready by the door. If I had time I would engage in a movement that would strengthen my cardiovascular system. Months passed and I could not believe that I was running races and finishing in the top ten percent. Then one day I came up to the starting line of a 10k race in Fort Lauderdale, FL and bang. I ran my heart out. I huffed, I puffed, and I nearly threw up at the finish line from how hard I had run. My time was an 8 minute mile. I had reached my goals from a broken 5k racer to a full throttle race car. By simply changing your wording, you can change the outcome of your actions. Erase resolving problems from your head. Imprint meeting goals. Positive words bring positive outcomes.

INVITATION TO A NEW YEAR’S EVE PARTY By Rev. Patrick Rogers, MDiv. Bible scholars believe that when Gabriel visited Mary to reveal the news of her pregnancy, the “sixth month” was referring to Elizabeth being in the sixth month of pregnancy. Yet, I love the interpretation that the virgin Mary may have been six months pregnant when the angel Gabriel visited her. Luke shares with us that Mary was “perplexed.” The definition of perplexed is a feeling of being puzzled or completely baffled. Describing Mary as perplexed is an understatement!

I

t is difficult to believe that being a virgin and pregnant, Mary wasn’t perplexed. She certainly had to be frightened. She knew that if somehow she was indeed pregnant that she would be shunned by her fiancé, her family, his family, and the surrounding community. The laws in the Old Testament reveal to us that she could face punishment including being stoned to death! If Mary was indeed in her sixth month, how could she not know or why would she be so surprised by the news? Feeling perplexed, one doesn’t “understand” what is going on around and within them. How often do we feel that ourselves today? I can quote a few episodes of that feeling! Maybe not to the degree of Mary (as me being male and pregnant would fall in the miracle category), but I, as well as everyone I know, can relate to the powerful feeling of sometimes being and feeling perplexed. Mary questioned the angel, “How can this be?” just like we sometimes question God’s call to us. The difference with Mary is that even though she knew that her journey would be frightening and most of the world around her would overwhelm her along the way, she made the choice to say “yes” to God’s calling for her.

38 | OutClique.com

The angel reassured her not to be afraid. What reassurance do we need for us to believe in God the way that God believes in us? Mary reached out to others. She relied on Joseph’s belief and support. Mary reached out to her cousin Elizabeth for understanding, encouragement, and support. The power of Mary’s story and her journey is significantly diminished if we lose sight of her humanness. Mary navigated her state of perplexion as an example to all who know her story. She relied on her faith and those who she believed in and trusted. Mary said yes to God’s divine plan within her. During this time of “new beginnings” we are also invited to believe in God’s plan and vision that God has implanted within each one of us. We are invited to know that God’s love will overcome any obstacles that the world places in our paths. We are invited to believe in ourselves the way that God believes in us. We are invited to say yes to where God is leading us. There is a special party starting in January 2019 and you are an invited guest. What will your RSVP be? Happy New Year!

HOW TO PREPARE FINANCIALLY FOR A LONGER LIFE By Linda Buccilli, Northwestern Mutual

If you ask people, many of them will tell you that they are not afraid of dying so much as they may be afraid of outliving your resources. No one looks forward to the time when you can no longer care for yourself. When that time comes, your ability to live as good a life as physically possible will depend on what preparations you make today. Exercise, eat right, stay mentally fit and financially prepared. Long-term care can be expensive and costs can quickly impact a person’s financial security. People are living longer, which increases the odds of developing a chronic illness that could require ongoing care. If the day comes that you are unable to do basic things, such as dressing yourself, getting in and out of bed, eating a meal or going to the bathroom alone, you will need to be prepared for the costs of paying professional caregivers for the help you need. As health care costs escalate, an increasing number of people are protecting themselves by planning for long-term care. Though Medicare covers skilled care for acute conditions such as heart attacks and broken bones, in general, it does not cover the custodial care required for chronic medical conditions.

When making your plans for a secure retirement, it’s also important to consider long-term care needs as a way of helping to protect your assets so they aren’t exhausted by possible extendedcare costs. By planning ahead, you can help maintain your independence and help ensure you have financial security to live your life your way. There are quite a few factors to consider when planning for long-term care. For this reason, it’s important to work with a financial professional who understands your needs, and who can design a plan that will meet those needs at a cost you can afford. Specifically, look for a financial professional who is supported by a well-established company with a solid history of strength and stability. A company that is well-positioned to deliver long-term value and will be there when you need it most. The right long-term care plan can provide you with options on how you receive the care you need and where. It gives you choices about how your final years are lived and where. And maybe, with such a plan can help reduce the fear of outliving your resources.

HAVE A LITTLE FAITH (PRINCE) By Gregg Shapiro

Faith Prince can do it all! The actress and singer won Tony and Drama Desk Awards for her portrayal of Miss Adelaide in the 1992 revival of Guys and Dolls. Since then, she received accolades and more nominations for her performance in the 2001 revival of Bells Are Ringing. Television watchers will also recognize Prince from her recurring roles in Modern Family, Drop Dead Diva, Huff and others. A familiar face on the cabaret and concert circuit, Prince has also made a name for herself as a beloved instructor of master classes in performance. I had the pleasure of speaking with her shortly before her South Florida concert appearance. Gregg Shapiro: When you do a concert such as the one coming up in February, how much of the material is drawn from musicals in which you’ve appeared such as Bells Are Ringing, Guys and Dolls, and Disaster!? Faith Prince: Some of it is drawn from musicals that I’ve done, not necessarily those. Maybe some from Guys and Dolls and Bells Are Ringing. I haven’t put the whole list together. (My set list) changes from venue to venue and what I think people will appreciate, what will resonate with them. That kind of thing. I tend to craft it towards the people I’m performing for.

GS

You are also known for being an acting teacher and coach. What are the challenges and rewards of teaching?

FJ

Oh, my gosh, so many! I think I’ve finally found my purpose. I’ve always loved performing, but I always had this kind of pesky somebody tapping me on the shoulder going, “Faith, this ain’t it kid, this ain’t it!” Then, what is it? I was living in Hastings-on-Hudson

(New York), and my girlfriend and I would walk the aqueduct which was part of the property behind our houses. It would go for miles. I turned to her one day and said, “You know what? This is all great, but this is not where I’m supposed to be?” She asked me what I meant by that and I said I wasn’t sure. In the ensuing years, it revealed itself. My dad was a nuclear engineer. I have his brain for the arts. I’m good at looking at things from an airplane view, how they work. It’s sort of how I did my career early on; having strategies. People always say, “It’s just luck,” but I say, “No. Luck is hard work meets opportunity.” I help artists articulate what they want and then we make a plan of how to execute it. You’re always going to have things you didn’t plan on, but there’s much more you can do in articulating your wants, putting yourself out there, connecting the dots. I did that for myself and a lot of times it helps other people get their own game plan.

DEAR DAR AN INTERVIEW WITH DAR WILLIAMS By Gregg Shapiro

T

he winter holidays are behind us, but there’s little doubt that for a lot of LGBTQ folks, it was a stressful time. Some seeking solace knew to listen to the Dar Williams song, “The Christians and the Pagans” on repeat. The tune, from her flawless 1996 album Mortal City, succeeds in being both sensitive and humorous, in its handling of a holiday gathering in which a solsticeobserving lesbian couple comes face-to-face with devoutly Christian family members at Christmas. That song, like so many of Williams’ best compositions, perfectly illustrates the singer/ songwriter’s abundant storytelling gifts, as well as her way with relevant subject matter in numbers including “As Cool As I Am,” “The Babysitter’s Here," “What Do You Hear In These Sounds," “Party Generation," “And A God Descended," “When I Was A Boy," “Are You Out There," “Teen For God” and “Buzzer." Additionally, Williams is also known for her social activism, including being a longtime supporter and friend of the LGBTQ community. I spoke with Williams, who performs on January 11, 2109 at The Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale, appropriately enough, just days before Christmas 2018. Gregg Shapiro: I’d like to begin by thanking you for coming down here to Fort Lauderdale to perform at the Broward Center in January. Many touring artists think the state ends at Orlando and don’t come any farther south. Have you played South Florida before? Dar Williams: Yes, I’ve played a bunch, actually. They’re missing out [laughs]. It’s a sophisticated crowd. I don’t get down there as much as I want but I’ve played at the Labyrinth Café [in Oakland Park]. And I played a big show 52 | OutClique.com

with Mary Chapin Carpenter, Shawn Colvin and Patty Griffin at one point in West Palm Beach. Generally, I’ve played a lot of concerts around that area.

GS

When I first interviewed you in 2000, we talked about your song “I Won’t Be Your Yoko Ono” and the cover you did of “Midnight Radio” from Hedwig and the Angry Inch includes a mention of Yoko. Have you had the opportunity to meet Yoko?

DW

No, but Stephen Trask, who wrote “Midnight Radio” is a good friend. He introduced me to Yoko Ono’s music and art. He was a music director for her tour. I’m sure if I begged him to introduce me to her, he would have tried. But there are a lot of people I haven’t met, and I’m okay with that.

GS

Do you foresee doing something similar for the anniversaries of other albums of yours?

DW

I don’t think so. Those two albums, The Honesty Room and Mortal City, one of them introduced me to the world and the other one established my place in the world and showed that I wasn’t a flash in the pan. It positioned what kind of artist I was.

GS DW

Finally, is there a new Dar Williams album in the works?

If three songs and 16 fragments mean an album in the works, then by all means, yes. I hope in 2020. 2019 is just not going to pan out, but early 2020.

SPA SEACRETS BLOG: THE PERFECT SHAVE By Brian David Douglas

S

o, you made it through “No-Shave November” and the rush of the holidays! With the onset of the New Year, are you ready for a fresh, clean-shaven new you? Preparation is key! No, the shampoo running down from your hair and the bar of soap you just used to clean your nether regions are not a substitute for a facial cleanser. Washing your face with an appropriate, ph-balanced, cleanser will help remove oil, dirt and bacteria from the skin. Apply your shaving cream like a king! Nothing feels more elegant and regal than applying shaving cream with a shaving brush. Prepare the brush by heating it under hot water. Apply a few dabs of your favorite shaving gel and work it into the face and neck in a circular motion. This lifts the hairs enabling the blade to catch the base for a close shave. Let’s do this! Do I really need to mention the importance of a clean, fresh razor? I prefer multi-blade razors, as they require less passes. A disposable razor blade should only be used for no more than ten shaves before being disposed. Shave in long, even strokes in the direction of the hair growth. If you want to do a second pass against the grain, be sure to reapply the shaving cream between strokes. Use an aftershave after shaving. If you can commit to a regimen and use quality products, you will find that shaving will become some “you time” that you actually enjoy. So what do I use? Here are my favorites: 1. Hydra Refine Cleansing Mousse (Repechage®) Washes deep down, and helps

eliminate pore-clogging oil. This soap free formula contains Marine Seaweed with astringent Lemongrass and fresh, cooling Cucumber. 2. One-Minute Exfoliating Mask (Repechage®) Exfoliates with tiny spheres of rice bran wax and lactic acid. With special Seaweed, Lemongrass and Cucumber blend, it leaves skin feeling clean and smooth. 3. Cremo® Original Shave Cream Contains unique molecules that become impossibly slick when mixed with water, so your blade can glide effortlessly over skin. 4. Herbal Astringent Pore Perfecting Solution (Repechage®) A blend of Seaweed, Willow Bark and seven natural herb extracts to deep cleanse and refresh skin as it helps reduce the appearance of shine and absorbs excess oil. 5. Essential Oil of Seaweed (Repechage®) This Vitamin E and natural Seaweed oil is the perfect beard oil for those still sporting some beard! It nourishes the skin and won’t clog the pores.

THE WITTY AND HUMOROUS JEANNE ROBERTSON

By Denny Patterson

J

eanne Robertson, a professional speaker who specializes in hilarious humor based on her life experiences, continues to charm audiences across the country. Standing tall at six-foot-two, this former Miss North Carolina beauty pageant queen has an infectious personality and a heart of gold. Robertson utilizes her funny style to illustrate that a sense of humor is much more than a laughing matter, it is a strategy for success. Robertson is making her way over to the Coral Springs Center for the Arts on Sunday, January 27, 2019 for a one night only engagement, and I had the pleasure of chatting more with her about the upcoming performance and her passion for making people laugh. Who is Jeanne Robertson? What is she all about? For years, I have been a professional speaker categorized as a humorist. I am very active in the National Speakers Association and I have spoken at countless conventions. I am 75-years-old, and when I was in my 60s, I embraced the internet. Thanks to the internet, I have done more speeches than ever in my life. The internet is a wonderful way to connect with people who like what you do. I was approached by people in Nashville about 12 years ago and they said they think I have enough name recognition to sell tickets. This is because I posted a clip on YouTube and it went viral. I posted another and it went viral as well. I have over 61 million hits on YouTube. Because of this new found stardom, I am as busy as I can be. Every place I perform is a high. My number one state to perform in is Texas, and my number two is Florida. I am older and the material age appropriate. I was the tallest contestant at 6’2’’ to be in the Miss America pageant, and that year, I did a speaking tour and did over 500 speeches. I love to make people laugh. After I started speaking at conventions, I never looked back. I write my own material, but at 75, if I were

to walk out and do an hour and a half of just pageant stories, I would be a very sad, one trick pony. What I try to do, every decade where my life takes me, those are the stories I tell. I don’t get into politics and I don’t get into anything controversial. I just try to talk about the same things that happen to everybody. What you want is for audiences to sit there and laugh. I don’t call myself a comedian. I always thought of myself as a humorist. What is the difference? A comedian’s goal is to make the majority of people in the club laugh. They can go after anybody in the audience. If you go to a comedy club and see a comedian, you should not be offended. They can go after your life, what you do, use any type of language, use any type of innuendo, get into politics, and do anything controversial. A humorist weaves a longer story. My goal is, I don’t want the person who hired me to lose their job because I went into some topic their boss didn’t approve of. I honestly don’t think I can tell jokes. I just talk about what I see. It’s still unbelievable that all of this is happening. For 2,000 people to sit there and listen to me. I just tell the truth on what I see. People will come up to me and say they have stories, and I always tell them to make sure they write them down or record them. What can audiences expect from your show at Coral Springs? They can expect to sit back and relax and laugh and not be offended. It’s almost like a slap on the knee kind of comedy. The whole country needs a good laugh. Audiences will leave knowing they had a great time. Go grab some dinner before or after. Come with friends. The nice thing is, no matter your background, you are in a room full of different people who are laughing at the same thing.

YES, VIRGINIA AN INTERVIEW WITH VIRGINIA MADSEN By Gregg Shapiro

I

n director Yen Tan’s new movie 1985 (Wolfe), Madsen gives what may well be her finest performance. As Eileen, she’s a Texas mom whose oldest son Adrian (out actor Cory Michael Smith) comes home from New York for Christmas in 1985, the first time he’s been with the family in three years. He’s hiding a few secrets, including being gay and being HIV+, but Eileen is savvier than she seems. Madsen gives her all in every scene, including an airport goodbye scene that requires a box of tissues.

It seems like no matter what kind of movies you enjoy, chances are good that Virginia Madsen has been in one of them. She covered horror early in her career with the cult favorite Candyman and has appeared in others over the years, most recently The Haunting in Connecticut. Madsen has also performed in acclaimed dramas including Ghosts of Mississippi, The Rainmaker and Joy (playing Jennifer Lawrence’s mother). She is also a natural when it comes to comedies as her Oscarnominated turn in Sideways proved, as well as her performances in A Prairie Home Companion and the queer-themed A Change of Heart. afraid of a ghost that’s not really there. It’s playing dress-up. It should also be very good storytelling. The reason I haven’t done more of it is because the stories were never any good. The focus was more on the slasher aspect and less on the story. That’s why I loved Candyman. It was really like a classic Dracula. It was a legend and into past lives and very romantic. When you look at the classic horror villains, you felt for them. You loved Frankenstein and you hated when the castle collapsed because you have empathy for the monster. We all have a bit of the monster within us.

I had the pleasure of speaking with Madsen, a true ally, through and through, before 1985 was released for a limited theatrical run and on home video and VOD in late November.

GS

Gregg Shapiro: Virginia, early in your acting career, you starred in the classic horror film Candyman and later in The Number 23 and The Haunting in Connecticut. What is it about this genre of movies that appeals to you as an actress?

VM

Virginia Madsen: It’s just very fun making a horror film. It’s like it’s Halloween and you’re a little kid and you’re pretending to be 74 | OutClique.com

THE DYNAMICS OF THE DYNAMIC DUO Eric & Gerianne By Steven O. Evans, PhD

N

ot one, but two dynamic performers make up the Dynamic Duo - Gerianne and Eric. They’ll play, sing, and entertain their way right into your hearts. Join them for an unbelievable night of sing alongs that include show tunes, old favorites, and current classics Their spirit and energy is one that will leave you with a smile. Don’t miss their act as they tour Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, Vero Beach, Naples, and Key West. Check out their list of shows at www.DynamicDuoAct.com. First, tell our readers about how you started the Dynamic Duo. Eric: Honestly, the act was inspired by a night out while I was in New York City back in 2014. A few friends took me to Marie’s Crisis, the famous piano bar. There, I saw a room full of people just belting out their favorite showtunes, making requests, and a fun piano guy (Kenney Green) working the crowd like I had never seen! I was so inspired and I had never seen anything like that before. So, I came home and thought, “This is it. This is how Gerianne and I can put our heads together and do something that brings a new piece of

Cabaret culture to Detroit.” Gerianne: Our Duo really began as a living room jam session way back in college, circa 2003. We both attended the same college, Adrian College, and were music majors that practiced in the same music hall. Our building was an old frat house that had classrooms, practice rooms, and in the main living room, a baby grand piano. Eric and I both would sit and play for tons of other music majors, lead the groups in songs, and try tons of repertoire that we just wanted to sing for fun. It was here that the Duo was born, but it was over a decade before it would be fully realized as an act with name and brand; literally the week after Eric got back from NYC! What can people expect from your shows? Eric: People can expect to sing! We try really hard to pick songs from the golden era of Broadway all the way to currently running productions like Hamilton, while also touching on the classic Disney tunes of our past. The audience can also expect to learn a little about us like funny growing up stories and OutClique.com | 83

get a glimpse of what happens when two best friends work together! Our shows are different each time because each audience is different! We have our staples that we always perform, but we really try to let the audience and vibe of the night guide the show. Gerianne: Eric starts with some classic warm up songs for each audience, ones that most people will know. He kind of hosts the night while I play the majority of the shows. We do play a bit of musical chairs though and I get a few times to show what I can do vocally and Eric gets to show you his keyboard skills as well. It took us a while to figure out that this format works best, but it really works now! What is your favorite song to perform and why? Eric: My favorite song to perform, personally is, “I Am What I Am” from La Cage Aux Folles. It doesn’t get much more Broadway than that, but the song also has an extremely deep meaning to me. You’ll have to come to the show to hear the story! Gerianne: Well I am the ballad queen, a title I received from our home bar in Detroit (shout out to Pronto Video Bar!), so naturally I go with a ballad titled, “She Used to be Mine” from Waitress. It’s a simple song in regards to it’s accompaniment but the lyrics speak to me on a new level each time I sing it. I talk a bit about it in the show as well. But, in classic Gemini form, I have to choose two and be contrasting.I love singing “Whatever Happened to My Part” from Spamalot because I can just let ‘er rip and play with the audience a bit more! Eric: Well now I have to add on because in Virgo form, I need the last word. Ok, the favorite group song we do is probably “Defying Gravity” from Wicked. We do it as a diva tag which is a fun singer’s game born in NYC. It’s kind of an epic way to hear and perform the song and the audience usually gets way into it. Tell us one “secret” about you all that most don’t know, but you aren’t afraid to print in a magazine!

Eric: Oh man, what a great question. I really love working with recording artists and originating music. I have had an amazing career so far that has taken me to NYC, on the set of X-Factor, to LA, and soon to be overseas. I was also a choir teacher for 5 years (go Roeper School!) and loved every moment of teaching my 6th12th graders! Gerianne: Awesome question! I don’t think most people know that I have several unpublished albums and that I compose for a ton of projects on a rotating basis. Music is tremendously personal and I just haven’t found the project that I wanted to put out and share with the world on blast! I am also a cancer survivor that learned early on, you have to keep moving on and really not sweat the small stuff so much. What is the next step for the Dynamic Duo? Eric: We are hoping, praying, wishing, and waiting for a cruise ship deal. Every time we play on tour, most people come up and say that we would be a great fit for a piano bar on a ship. We know our market well so we do think a cruise catering to our LGBTQ+ audiences would be the best fit, but we would be open to all options; who wouldn’t? Right now, we are also focusing on tour and being grateful for that! When we started in Florida three years ago, we played three cities and eight shows in nine days. Now we play multiple cities in eight weeks. So there is growth and brand building we are so grateful for. Gerianne: I am much more in the organic growth. I believe things will happen when they are supposed to and you just can’t rush things. We tried to build other musical projects before and were sure we were going to be successful, but they eventually fizzled. We took a much more relaxed vibe with the Duo and allowed ourselves to be the most true to ourselves and serve our audience in an authentic way. Only then did we get to the places we have always wanted. It will happen when it’s supposed to happen. As a truly talented OutClique.com | 85

TAKING CONTROL OF DEBT Rod Davis BBB CEO Better Business Bureau Serving SEFL and the Caribbean

B

eing in debt can be overwhelming, and unfortunately, is on the rise and touches more and more people. According to Lending Tree, non-mortgage consumer debt will reach $4 trillion by the end of 2018. The same report indicates that student loan debt has doubled over the last ten years to almost $1.6 trillion. While it is easy to get into debt, it is hard to work your way out of debt. No matter what some people say, there are many ways to get into debt besides having bad financial habits. A job loss, cut in pay, obtaining a college degree, a big increase in mandatory monthly expenses, or large medical bills are a few reasons that even a responsible person’s debt can spiral out of control. Getting out of debt requires establishing a solid, realistic financial game plan and then having the discipline and perseverance to achieve your goals. No matter the specific facts of your situation, focus on choosing a solution that fits your budget, assets, credit, and financial goals. You also need to be focused to avoid scammers and unethical businesses who offer solutions that are more likely to increase your debt as they pocket money from you without paying down your debts. An effective way to get out of debt starts with having a clear understanding of your Credit, Budget, and Assets. A combination of your ability to make monthly payments (budget), ability to refinance, consolidate, or restructure your debt (credit), and the ability to provide extra collateral and/ or funds to pay off your debt (assets), will determine your path to financial freedom. KNOW YOUR DEBT Are you keeping track of your debt? 92 | OutClique.com

Do you know how much you owe, your interest rates, and monthly payments? You can’t form the most effective plan when you don’t know the facts. Are you making your payments on time, struggling to make your monthly payments, or falling behind in your payments? Also, review your bank and lender statements, including any credit card, mortgage, student, auto, and personal loan statements. Compile a list of your weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual bills. If debts are being paid in installments, include the interest rate for each so that you can evaluate if there are options available to you to lower the interest rate so that more money is directed to debt reduction. One key to getting out of debt safely is to know how much you can afford to put towards your debt each month. Good intentions are not going to get you to the finish line if you commit to a solution with a payment too large for you to sustain for the number of months required to become debt free. The only way to be sure you’re not biting off more than you can chew is by keeping a budget. Your budget is your tool for monitoring your cash flow, including your earnings and your expenses. Your budget aids you in determining how much money is available to pay your debts. It also helps you focus on expenses you can cut to pay off your debt. Whether they are limited or large, listing your major assets, including your savings plans, investment accounts, home, and retirement plans, is an important part of choosing the right debt relief strategy. While it isn’t always prudent to use an existing asset to help pay

off debt, it is important to track your wealth. Paying off debt together with building an asset portfolio will offer long-term financial security. You may also be able to use some assets as short-term solutions to pay off debt if those assets provide a way to pay down debts at a lower interest rate. Once you have compiled your budget, the list of assets and the rates for any recurring payment on debts, the next step is to develop the strategy and plan to pay off your debt.

mortgage and your debts to see if using this approach can help you pay off your debt more quickly and at a lower overall amount.

There are a few major ways to get out of debt. Here are the main choices you should review:

Debt Settlement: A debt settlement plan is an option you should review if you are experiencing a serious financial hardship and are struggling to make your monthly payments or feel that you’re about to reach that point. While the debt settlement company negotiates your debt with the creditor, you make monthly payments into a secure bank account to pay your creditor, after the settlement is finalized. Make sure that the debt settlement company takes a fee only upon successfully negotiating a settlement. Avoid upfront fees.

DIY payment plan: You pay down your debts more aggressively. More money going to the principal gets you out of debt faster and at a lower overall cost. You may need to cut some non-essential expenses (e.g. high end cable, expensive coffee) to lower your monthly expenses enough to enable you to pay off your debt. Put your expenses, and income into a spreadsheet (or a list for the non-techies) so that you can make adjustments until you attain a reasonable plan. If you have credit card debt, talk to your credit card company about a lower rate. If you have multiple credit cards, you may want to consolidate your debt onto the card with the lowest rate. You may also want to explore a personal loan or a cash out refinance of your mortgage if you have equity in the property. A personal loan is a great debt consolidation option if you have a high enough credit score to qualify for a rate that has a lower interest rate than your current debt. Most personal loans are for short-term period, between 3-5 years, and could increase the size of your monthly payment. If you have equity in your home and a good credit score you may be able to lower the costs on both your mortgage and your existing debt. Once you have the figures from your lender, you can compare the total amount you will pay on your 94 | OutClique.com

Credit Counseling and a Debt Management Plan (DMP): A credit counseling service’s DMP consolidates your credit card bills into one payment. Depending on the creditors you owe and your current interest rates, a DMP could get you out of debt in 4-5 years at a reduced cost.

Student Debt: Student debt can be the biggest challenge since it can’t be forgiven even in bankruptcy and the amount of debt is often very high compared to earnings. Just as with other debt you can first attempt to reduce and pay off debt by yourself. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau offers guidance to you on their website at www.ConsumerFinance.gov/ Paying-For-College/Repay-Student-Debt/ There are many great solutions to help one get out of debt. However, make sure that you choose the right approach for your situation. Be thoughtful and methodical so you are properly prepared to take control of your debt. One final piece of advice: before you decide on any solution, if you seek outside assistance work with a reputable firm and avoid falling for a scam.

THE CHANCE TO DANCE WITH FRANCE AN INTERVIEW WITH DISCO DIVA FRANCE JOLI By Gregg Shapiro

When it comes to the classic disco tracks of the late 1970s, few pack the wallop of “Come to Me” by France Joli. A mere 16 years old when the song was a hit, staying in the number one position for three weeks on Billboard Magazine’s Hot Dance Club Play chart in the autumn of 1979, Joli is a disco diva of the highest order, taking her place among greats such as Sylvester, Diana Ross, Donna Summer, Gloria Gaynor, Cheryl Lynn and, of course, Evelyn “Champagne” King.

F

rom February 14-19, 2019, Joli will be one of the legendary disco performers setting sail from Fort Lauderdale, with stops in Key West and Cozumel, on the inaugural Ultimate Disco Cruise (www. UltimateDiscoCruise.com). Other performers include Thelma Houston, Musique, Yvonne Elliman, and Rose Royce, among others. However, few have maintained their icon status among LGBTQ folks the way Joli has, returning to perform in Fire Island on a regular basis. I had the pleasure of speaking with France shortly before the cruise set sail. Gregg Shapiro: In February 2019, you are going to be performing on the inaugural Ultimate Disco Cruise, sailing from Fort Lauderdale, Florida to Cozumel, Mexico and back. What can your fans expect from your set on the cruise? France Joli: From my set you can expect, of course, the classics that I’ve been singing for 40 year now [laughs]. Also, I do a disco medley of great songs that we danced to when we were young. It’s about a 10-minute disco medley of all the big hits. I get pretty close to the originals. It goes really fast from one song to another to give listeners a glimpse of the hits. It’s high energy and intense.

GS

Among the other artists performing on the Ultimate Disco Cruise are fellow Prelude Records label-mates Musique. When you perform at an event such as this cruise, with other artists from the classic disco era, does it feel like a family reunion?

FJ

Absolutely! There’s such respect towards all the artists. We participated in an era that was very specific. The `70s were something very special. We are part of an era where the music was real. Real musicians and real strings and horns. The production was complicated in the music aspect of it. Right after the disco era came all of the electronic music. We’re at the end of that phase where the music was organic. There’s a respect for that music and we all have the same feeling for that era. It is a family; you’re absolutely right. It’s a big family.

GS

Studio 54 DJ Nicky Siano will also be among the artists on the cruise. Did you have a chance to go to Studio 54 during its heyday?

FJ

I have a good story for you! Before “Come to Me” came out on the radio, OutClique.com | 99

we were doing a promotional tour with all of the DJs, going to clubs and presenting the record to them. The record company came with me to Studio 54. The DJ put “Come To Me” on for the first time. The dance-floor started filling up. I was in the DJ booth and a lot of people were coming over and asking, “Is that the new Donna Summer song?” Because it had the formula of “Last Dance”.

GS FJ

The slow intro and then the build.

That’s right. I was only 16 and I was so excited, I turned around and went, “No! It’s me [big laugh]!” I remember those days when I was going from club to club and meeting all the DJs and the record pools. It was a lot of fun, the excitement of seeing people dance to my music. I performed many times at Studio 54.

GS

2019 is also the 40th anniversary of the release of your self-titled debut album. Are you doing anything special to commemorate the occasion?

FJ

Yes, but it’s kind of a little secret right now. We’re working towards something really special for the 40th anniversary. I can tell you that I will have a new song out next year. I don’t know exactly when, but it will be next year.

GS

Even though you had been performing from an early age, were you prepared for what happened when “Come To Me” became a hit?

FJ

You’re never prepared, really. You can dream all you want. But once you start living it, you’re never prepared. It’s like a big storm of love and adoration that you’re really not used to. Success is really hard to manage, especially when you’re 16. My mom was with me. She kept me down to earth and made sure I stayed who I was and not let it go to my head. You’re never 100 | OutClique.com

ready for it, but you get used to it real fast [laughs].

GS FJ

I can imagine!

You’re 16 years old, you’re traveling the world. You get to go to the most famous restaurants and hotels. You’re flying first class everywhere. You’re becoming a sort of elite. You can definitely get used to that.

GS

One of the most talked about moments in your career occurred when, in 1979 before the release of “Come To Me”, you performed at Fire Island Pines following Donna Summer’s last-minute cancellation. Do you remember what that experience was like for you?

FJ

I will always remember that. It was my first American performance. It was my first time in the Pines. It was my first time surrounded by mostly gay men. I think there were 5,000 gay men and two lesbians [laughs]. The whole experience was overwhelming. I remember being very nervous, of course. But the immediate love and acceptance from the crowd was so amazing that it took the nerves away and I became one of them, part of them. It was so magical. I remember the anticipation and all of that, but I also remember that feeling of going out of my body, I was floating. It was unbelievable. It was surreal. I remember after the show – I think I sang three songs – I didn’t sleep all night. The adrenaline was so high, it felt like I was on drugs [laughs]. I still feel that way after a show. I have a hard time bringing myself down from the adrenaline and all the positive energy and love.

GS FJ

How often do you return to Fire Island to perform?

I was there about two years ago. I think I’m there every two or three years. I get an invitation to either do a special event or a club night.

WHAT MAKES US CLIQUE

JEN LAWS

By Andy Armano

Photos by Andy Armano

This series focuses on individuals who give to our community and make a positive impact on the lives of others. Often it is through our personal adversities that we discover who we are and transform the challenges into strength. Jen has been a longtime trans and HIV advocate and a public health policy consultant and strategist. He serves on the board for AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP) Advocacy Association, writing regularly for its blog. Tell me a little about the roots of your trans and HIV advocacy. HIV has always been in my life to some degree or another. When I was younger, I hung out in queer circles, shared housing while homeless, and I saw people get sick, share food, and struggle to survive with me. I was always deeply moved when I heard my peers talk with heart about the issues they faced and how they were choosing to survive in the moment. Many of those issues were similar to my own. When I was 18 I was diagnosed with HIV. My passion is to help my community realize the truth that, for better or worse, government policy is where the will of the electorate is realized. When those challenges happen so young, we don’t have the emotional and intellectual capability to really process those events. When did you start looking at those issues, how did they affect you, and how did you heal and overcome those challenges? I think I started to understand that it was damaging to me when I was about 15 years old. I had a younger brother and he died when he was 24. That was really hard for me. He was 102 | OutClique.com

13 months younger than me and I spent the vast majority of my childhood raising him. That sense of needing to take care of him was a big, big piece for shaping who I am and how I view the world. I recall very distinctly telling my father after he got custody of my younger brother about things that happened to me. That I was raped repeatedly for several years. The conversation escalated into an argument. Then my younger brother called me a liar and I punched him square in the nose. I realized precisely how angry I was. I was already self-destructive by the time, but realizing that the anger and self-destructive behavior were intimately tied was pivotal to my own personal growth. I chose to work through my anger. I could see a thread between taking care of your brother and the work that you do now. Do you feel there's a tie there? There's absolutely a tie. One of the things I've had to develop for myself is working to let go of my sense of needing to have saved my younger brother. I have come to a point where

I understand it is not my job to save other people. My job in this life is to make sure that, as I find tools that help me, I am sharing them so other people can save themselves. I can see how your public health work aligns with your goal of making tools available to others. When I talk about health policy and health equity, I’m talking about extending tools that improve people’s quality of life. When we talk about equal access to care in a meaningful manner, we are talking about extending support that improves people’s ability to be economically mobile and to self-actualize their ideals and dreams. I find in my advocacy around transgender health policy that this is really important. Despite being trans identified, I don’t necessarily reflect the identity of the population experiencing the most disparate impacts of an unjust society. I may share experience, but the way the world is built today I have a greater opportunity to move past those things and still achieve success. So, I’m left with having to balance my ideals and ethics with having a certain…platform. Being aware of that, I’m left with the responsibility to support and amplify the voices and stories of black trans women,

black women, and other more marginalized and highly impacted populations rather than pushing through my own narrative. Making space, “saving seats” at the table as it were, to ensure their stories are first. That’s where this intersection of my work on HIV and trans health occurs. Both areas of health are important separately and together they’re the center of today’s epidemic. Would you call yourself an activist? Oh, that word makes me uncomfortable. I often refer to myself as an advocate. I think the reason “activist” makes me uncomfortable is because I understand activists as individuals who are willing to put themselves at extraordinary risk. Much of that risk is emotional and centers on telling one’s own story. I am very careful about the risks I take and there are risks that are unacceptable to me. Security is something that I value highly. I'm not sure that I would call myself an activist. I would not shun the label should someone assign it to me, but I’m precise in saying that I find myself advocating for people I identify with and seeking to amplify their voices rather than trying to instill a sense of my own story or values on others.

Photos by Andy Armano

You faced so many challenges that limited your ability to excel academically in school even though you are incredibly intelligent. How did you develop that confidence that I see in you today? I like to joke very frequently that I am too stubborn or too stupid to take no for an answer. I didn’t graduate high school, I have a GED, but no college degree; I am self-educated. The more I learn the more I feel confident in my knowledge. The more work that I do the more work I am offered. Truthfully, I’m not always confident in the work that I'm doing. There are confidants and colleagues that I rely on to bounce ideas off of, and I’ve had the cheerleading support of my wife for 12 years. OutClique.com | 103

SIDE SHOW STARS

Alice Ripley and Emily Skinner Reunite for Unattached By Mike Jeknavorian

Alice and Emily perform at The Broward Center for the Performing Arts Sunday, January 13, 2018 at 7:00 PM As one of the conjoined twins from the cult musical Side Show, Alice Ripley will be inexorably linked to her co-star, Emily Skinner. I sat down with Alice Ripley to discuss her career and to hear more about what audiences can expect from their upcoming show in Aventura. Mike Jeknavorian: You have a CD, Daily Practice, Volume 1, of acoustic rock covers. Is your heart closer to rock or theater music, or is it split down the middle? Alice Ripley: I'm a healthy and hearty combo!

You’ve been in a lot of shows, like Sophie’s Choice. If you had to choose one, which one’s your favorite?

The next “yet to be written one” is always my favorite. Did you ever meet another celebrity backstage who you acted like a “fan”

AR MJ

You had to be there!

AR MJ

Not really. How the audience reacts is always a surprise.

AR

Who knows.

Has there been a musical or play where the response from the audience was more enthusiastic and emotional than you expected?

Do you think that they’ll ever make a movie of the hit musical that you were in, Next to Normal?

MJ AR

But if they do make a movie of it, do you think that it would work?

MJ AR MJ AR MJ

Do you have a dream role?

Well, I know one thing. If one existed, people all over the world would watch it again and again.

Violet, in August: Osage County. At this point, which role would you most like to be remembered for? All of them. It's the body of work that attracts me.

MJ

Can you still remember how to do that elaborate dance from “When I’m By Your Side” from Side Show?

AR MJ AR MJ AR

Yes. I'm doing it right now (laughs). Have you ever been to South Florida before? Yes. And finally, what will you do with your down-time when you’re here? Rest and get ready for Unattached!

Let’s talk about touring. You’ve toured all over the world. What destination has “wowed” you the most so far?

AR MJ

Buenos Aires because wonderful people there.

Your upcoming show in Aventura with Emily Skinner is called Unattached. I heard Christine Pedi say on the radio that you’re both mistaken for each other a lot. Considering this, what’s the weirdest thing that’s happened to you because of the mistaken identities?

AR

A reporter recently called me Emily Skinner in a review for the play, Clybourne Park. What can I say? It was our job to convince people we were twins. Guess we clinched that one because we’re more different than alike.

MJ

Not to give away your set list for Unattached, but can the audience look forward to more than one duet from Side Show?

AR

We’ll do at least one. OutClique.com | 107

F

irst impressions are so meaningful and your eyes can reveal, be seductive, and tell a story in one brief moment! Eye treatments that offer a refresh, maintenance or any level of enhancement are a perfect way to see awesome results that look natural and provide that smooth, youthful and fresh look. Under eye treatments are some of the most sought after treatments which we receive inquiries. There is a range of applications to enhance the under eye area, whether it is for wrinkles, fine lines, puffiness, or bags forming around the eyes. If you find yourself looking in the mirror wondering 118 | OutClique.com

whether an under eye treatment is right for you, read more about it in this January issue of OutClique Magazine. Radiofrequency (RF) treatments are one of our go to eye treatments. Radiofrequency skin tightening is an aesthetic technique that uses RF energy to heat tissue and stimulate subdermal collagen production in order to reduce the appearance of fine lines and loose skin. The technique induces tissue remodeling and production of new collagen and elastin. The end result is firmer,

radiant looking skin around your eyes. And because the radiofrequency goes deep into the skin, gentle warm will be felt on the topmost layer of the skin, making this treatment a comfortable and effective solution for sparkly eyes. Dermal fillers are another eyemazing option. "Under eye dermal fillers such as Belotero Balance, Restylane Silk and Juvederm Ultra are great choices to treat the tear trough or orbital hollowing. Each offers unique manufacturing techniques and the ability to ensure optimal and natural results with all patient types.

Treatments to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, puffiness, or under eye bags range in the time to take effect. Dermal fillers will show long-lasting results immediately, where RF will facilitate building collagen over time and will build stronger results with repeated treatments which is why treatments are always in a package. The good news is that the FDA has approved hyaluronic acid fillers containing lidocaine. That will provide for minimal pain for dermal fillers, and RF is a non-invasive treatment altogether so the discomfort, if any, will be due to the heat that is
