Paint Your Own World Dear Readers, How did you celebrate Pride month? A parade, a festival, posting on social media, volunteering, or a day to yourself? When I started OutClique magazine, one of my themes was, “Just do you.” I still stand by that today. One of our articles this month features Avi Ram, muralist and body painter. His canvases include large walls of buildings, the human body, and other mediums. His level of spatial intelligence, coupled with his sense of color, and utilizing his eye/hand coordination, Avi moves creations in his mind to two and three dimensional renderings that redefine the word “art.” Friend, what’s inside you to create? To be? To make the world a better place? Your “spiritual gift” does not have to be the size of a building, but it can make the same impact. I challenge you, this post-Pride-rainbow filled month, to go out, and Paint Your World. May happiness be abounding.1 Dr. Steven2 1 Dr. Angela Easterday-Holder, former Chair and Professor of Music at Carson-Newman University and choir member Immanuel Baptist Church, Lexington, KY (www.ibclex.org) 2 Dr. Jane McEldowney Jensen, doctoral supervisor. Woodford Reserve® Releases 2023 Kentucky Derby Bottle Woodford Reserve®, the Presenting Sponsor of the Kentucky Derby®, is honoring “The Greatest Two Minutes in Sports” with the release of its 2023 commemorative Derby bottle.

in history,” Woodford Reserve Master Distiller Elizabeth McCall said. “Even 50 years after his stunning achievement, Secretariat’s Triple Crown run is still considered one of the most iconic achievements in sports.”

This year’s special release celebrates the 50th anniversary of one of the most iconic moments in sports history – Secretariat winning the 1973 Derby.

Corum spent her formative years riding horses, painting and drawing them in her free time, and continued to focus on her equine subject after receiving her Master of Fine Arts from The University of Kentucky. Each equine artwork begins with the foundation of her understanding of equine shape and movement and enhances that with the intangible quality of the horse’s character.

The bottle features the artwork of Kentucky native Jaime Corum, known for her stunning horse portraits. Her painting captures Secretariat in the Winner’s Circle at Churchill Downs, with the famed Garland of Roses draped over the colt’s withers. The bottle retails for $55 and is available for purchase globally. A special presale on ReserveBar begins March 1, 2023. Secretariat is considered one of the greatest thoroughbreds of all time. A Triple Crown winner, he still holds the record for the fastest race time at the Kentucky Derby, Preakness, and Belmont. “This is our most collectible Derby bottle yet, as Secretariat is perhaps the most revered and most loved racehorse

“I hope that my painting for this year’s Woodford Reserve Derby bottle, “Still the Greatest,” allows us to remember that moment of dreamlike perfection when Secretariat won the 1973 Kentucky Derby,” Corum said. “I have been honored to paint Secretariat many times over the years, but this one is truly special to me, as it celebrates his 50th anniversary and is paired with Woodford Reserve. Who could imagine a more perfect pairing of two things that will never go out of style?” Woodford Reserve’s Derby bottle has been an annual collector’s item anticipated by bourbon and racing fans since 1999.

Saturday Brunch at Alibi Brunch along Wilton Drive has a fresh vibe. A fresh rotation of entertainers and a fresh spicy menu are the reasons. Saturday brunch at Georgie’s Alibi Monkey Bar is an everchanging entertainment buffet. Combining the restaurant’s award-winning food and reputation for hosting Wilton Manors’ top talent has created another must-see event on The Drive. “People enjoy brunch and they want performances,” manager Michael Vinci told OutClique. “It helps for something entertaining to be happening in the afternoon.” The time has been moved to 2pm or 4pm, depending on which entertainers are booked. Guests who are out past 11pm on Friday seem to appreciate not having to be back by 11am on Saturday. Wilton All-Stars The entertainment is a lineup of area favorites that each have extremely loyal fanbases. Jennifer McClain can be seen solo and with Miss Bouvèé in their Boozy Belters act. Other rotating performers include Brian Mason, and power couple Tony & Gloria. “It’s early. It’s like they’re at happy hour,” Gloria told OutClique. “They come in at two, have their drinks, enjoy the show, and go home.” Each week has a theme, which can focus on a decade, like the eighties, or a specific place or moment in time. “It’s a chance for them to get out. They do a theme so they can explore musical expressions they are interested in,” Vinci said. Recently, Tony & Gloria did a Studio 54 theme. Tony says it’s more than music. They strive to put you in the mindset of the infamous club. “There’s a theme. We like to talk a little history. So for Studio 54, we say who owned it, who used to go. There’s a little narrative and it’s fun, like a game show.” Spicing Things Up Of course, brunch isn’t brunch without delicious food and something to wash it down. There is a signature cocktail menu and two-for-one drinks. Or, if you know you’re thirsty and you’re going to be there for a while, the bar offers bottomless mimosas, bellinis, and poinsettias. In addition to brunch staples, like chicken and waffles, owner and renowned chef Johnny Pak is putting a little foreign flavor on the menu. Pork Belly Ramen Noodles, Beef Chow Fun, and Thai Chicken Lettuce Wraps are unlike other brunch items you’ll find along Wilton Drive. Author: John Hayden

Wilton Manors Celebrates Stonewall Pride For decades, Broadway belters from Barbra Streisand to Lea Michele have implored ‘Don’t rain on my parade.’ For Stonewall Pride Parade & Street Festival 2023, it wasn’t to be. However, it didn’t dampen the spirits of the people who came out to mix, mingle, and celebrate community. While not nearly as packed as last year, likely due to thunderstorms and an even gloomier political climate, the thousands that did show up were ready to party. From NE 20th St. by Tropics to The Manor, Wilton Drive was the epicenter of LGBTQIA+ excitement in Florida. Tents covered much of The Drive, with vendors selling everything from handmade jewelry to gym memberships to water filters. They had a captive audience much of the

afternoon, as people huddled to get out of the rain because, when it rained it literally poured. Parade & Party While rain may have held down attendance, excitement was as high as ever. Seven stages lined The Drive with the Girls’ Stage at the south end by Bubbles & Pearls. Owner Josie Smith Malave and her alter ego, DJ Lady Snack Daddy, kept the food and the entertainment flowing. “It’s like the song It’s Raining Men, except it’s raining everybody,” she told OutClique. The parade featured more than 100 entries, with police

It was impossible to miss SunServe’s parade entry. They packed an open air, double decker bus with staff representing youth, seniors, trans healthcare, housing and more. “What we want to do is build a caravan of inclusivity and love,” CEO Tony Lima said from inside the packed bus. “We got the biggest red bus we could find so that we could have a full bus plus a caravan surrounding the bus.” At Eagle, which is known as a later-in-theevening club, had a line out the door by 6pm. Owner Chuck was thrilled. “The vibe and energy is really great. I think the rain is going to stop and the energy is building. Everyone is super happy.” Pups were getting in on the action. At Wag Pride, they were giving out special pride treats and making new friends as lots of first time customers discovered the store. Manager Carlos Kiyatake “It’s very busy, non-stop. I’m very happy.” They were giving away t-shirts and Pride Bones. and politicians in some cars joined by dancers and even some drag entertainers on floats. Perhaps the most fun and visual float was by Pub On the Drive. It featured an old timey carousel with lots of staff and entertainers. “It turned out great for the drag queens to be on,” Pub owner Mike Connell said from atop the float. “We wish everyone from the Pub a happy Pride regardless of who you are and where you’re from.” Across the street from the Pub, The Shoppes of Wilton Manors hosted thousands looking to eat, drink, and dance. Besides huddling under the awning during the rain, Georgie’s Alibi Monkey Bar saw a flow of people coming in and out and was at or near capacity all day. Across the way, Hunters Nightclub was a party unto itself. A line wrapped around part of the building to get in, while at least a thousand people partied in the parking lot, where a DJ played dance anthems from today and decades past.

Solar: Did it Work for Me? Last October I shared an article about the process for installing solar power (outclique.com/going-solar) and I have had quite a few people ask me how it is working for me (e.g., does it really work?). My installation was completed at the end of February, and I have had two full months to see the results. So, what did I learn? I learned that following the process outlined in my prior article will help you get solid results. Don’t cut corners, do your research, get several proposals, and always use a trustworthy business. All things being equal, use seflorida.app. bbb.org/connect to get three quotes. I did encounter one expense that I had not expected. Utility companies in Florida require that homeowners obtain an umbrella policy before they approve the connection of the solar power system to the grid. The utility companies’ rationale is that it must protect itself from liability should a customer-owned system cause injury or worse. For most homes, the requirement is a 1-million-dollar policy which customers with solid financial footing price out at $600 to $800. Your utility provider can share specific guidance once you have determined the size of your solar unit. We also experienced a slight delay to the deployment of the system because the permitting requires the utility company, the permitting office, and the contractor to work together. Whenever there are more parties involved, there can be delays so work with your contractor to stay on top of the process. You may need to call the utility company directly. There is also an application fee due to FPL to turn on your new system. FPL will also install a bi-directional meter before you can begin using your new system. Once the fees are paid, the new meter is in place, and the permitting office approves your new system, the start date is set. I was excited and a bit nervous

to see if my system would cover the 90% we had planned for in the design. My system came with an app and also permits access via a web portal online. The system dashboard tracks how much energy is created each day, week, and month. It also shows how much energy is consumed. My installation included a backup battery for times when the grid is down and the sun is not available to provide the backup power. The Dashboard also provides a status check on the battery. The first full month after the system was installed, my FPL bill was $30. There is a minimum fee charged to all homeowners of $25 to help cover infrastructure costs. So, was I happy? Well, yes. Routinely my energy bill was $350 a month. I also found that by checking in on my dashboard, I could figure out if I was wasting energy and make adjustments (e.g. running the pool pump less, dropping the temperature on the thermostat by a degree). On average, my experience will show a savings of $3,850 per year. Even after deducting the additional insurance, I will save $3,250 per year. Each project will vary, so it is essential to work with quality contractors who will give you accurate estimates and install top-level systems. There will also be some maintenance costs over time so based on my experience, if my system operates effectively for 12 years, and taking into account the tax credit I received, I should break even at that point. The benefit of clean energy was a significant incentive for me, but I also did not want to spend significantly more than I was already on energy. Again, my experience is based on the variable factors for my home, system, and energy use. Each person’s results will be different, but I hope by sharing what I have learned, it will help other consumers make smart decisions about whether they too should go solar.

Glow Promotion A Revolutionary Treatment With Powerful Ingredients Today, we are visiting Dr. Ferdinand Cabrera at Genesis Health Institute. They have a fantastic summer promotion to help men achieve beautiful, radiant skin. Baxter Martin: Good morning, Dr. Cabrera. Can you tell us about the new Genesis Glow promotion? Dr. Cabrera: Of course! Our Genesis Glow promotion is a revolutionary treatment that combines three powerful ingredients to give your face a radiant glow. We use microneedling to apply 3ml of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP), 20 units of Botox, and 0.5 ccs of hyaluronic acid. This combination of ingredients stimulates collagen production, gives you immediate and long-lasting results, and rejuvenates your skin from within. Baxter Martin: That sounds amazing! Can you explain a bit more about the individual components of the treatment? Dr. Cabrera: I’m happy to. PRP is a concentrated serum derived from your blood, rich in growth factors. PRP stimulates collagen production, improves skin texture and tone, and reduces fine lines and wrinkles. Botox is a neuromodulator that relaxes the muscles that cause wrinkles and fine lines to close and tighten pores. And hyaluronic acid is a natural substance found in the body that helps to keep your skin hydrated and plump.

Baxter Martin: And how does microneedling fit into the treatment? Dr. Cabrera: Microneedling is a minimally-invasive procedure that uses tiny needles to puncture the skin and create microchannels. These channels allow the ingredients to penetrate deeper into the skin, where they can work their magic. Microneedling also stimulates collagen production, which, as I mentioned, helps to improve skin texture and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Baxter Martin: That sounds fantastic; what about cost? Dr. Cabrera: The Genesis Glow promotion is available for just $499 through July 31st: an incredible value considering ingredient quality and our team’s expertise. We are committed to making these treatments accessible to everyone who wants to look and feel their best. Baxter Martin: Thank you for explaining this fantastic treatment to us, Dr. Cabrera. Is there anything else you would like to add? Dr. Cabrera: We are thrilled to offer this promotion to OutClique readers. We believe everyone deserves healthy, radiant skin and are committed to helping them achieve that. So, if you’re ready to experience the Genesis Glow, call me today at 954-561-3175 to schedule an appointment and learn more.

MISTR & Alibi Support Drag Community God save the queens! That rallying cry was shouted loud and proud from the heart of Wilton Manors on June 15, 2023. Georgie’s Alibi Monkey Bar teamed up with MISTR, Grindr, and the ACLU to raise attention and money in the fight to keep drag entertainment accessible and legal. Florida is among the states passing laws designed to harass and criminalize drag entertainment and its supporters. The event raised money for the ACLU Drag Defense Fund. MISTR works in the field of HIV/AIDS prevention and may not sound like a logical partner for an event like this, but MISTR CEO Tristan Schukraft told OutClique that’s not the case at all. “Drag queens bring an immeasurable amount of joy, love and strength to the community,” he said. “As we walk together in these dark times, it’s more important than ever to uplift and show our unwavering support for such a beautiful art form. To put it simply, if you come for one of us, you come for all of us.” Alibi is a logical and natural choice to hold the event. At the center of social life on Wilton Drive, it is also willing to be a center for social justice. Alibi has one of the most robust entertainment schedules on The Drive and drag entertainment has always been at the heart of their programming. “I love Alibi! I’ve been coming here for years,” Roxxxy Andrews told OutClique “It’s such a great venue and a huge fun time.” The South Florida drag legend and

RuPaul’s Drag Race alum headlined the night. “It is very important to me and my sisters. I know a lot of people that survive off of doing drag. When they are attacking us we have to fight up against it.” Also helping get the message out is Grindr. The hookup app has a big voice in the community and MISTR is thrilled to reach the users. “There is strength in numbers and Grindr undeniably has the largest audience in our community. Aside from being a great partner, Grindr has been a key asset in getting the word out about PrEP awareness and for our fundraising efforts for ACLU Drag Defense Fund,” Schukraft said. He also believes that MISTR’s mission of protecting the health of our LGBTQIA+ community is in line with events like God Save the Queens. “While Florida is one of MISTR’s largest markets in the country, there is still so much work to be done. Not to mention the constant attacks on our community from Florida’s current leadership, which reminds us almost daily that we need to rise up together as a community to fight for our right to exist. No matter what, MISTR’s efforts to get people enrolled in PrEP or long term HIV Care remains our top priority.” Supporting our community means supporting drag. “The ACLU is very important to me because my career is being a drag queen. They are defending what I’ve chosen my career to be,” Roxxxy said. “So please donate to the ACLU fund so we can fight this and do what we need to do.”

Broward House Needs Community Help Stacy Hyde dedicates her life to helping others. As executive director of Broward House, she helps people find structure and security during desperate times. After devastating floods in April, clients aren’t the only ones facing challenges. Her staff and Broward House’s facilities are in trouble. After two days of increasingly heavy rains, Hyde and her staff knew by Wednesday afternoon they were in trouble. “Our Director of Contracts called around 5:30pm and said water was coming through the walls at our administrative offices and then our Behavioral Health Manager (BHM) called and said water was coming through the doors at our Assisted Living Facility,” she told OutClique. “I was at our Wilton Manors location and went home near Cypress Creek to get my shop vac. By the time I got to Broward Blvd. there was no way to get downtown.” Once the water receded, Hyde knew she was facing the biggest, unexpected challenge of her twenty years at Broward House. “We just thought this is a clean-up, but the realization started to set in. The ACs were down in the client rooms, the hot water heater was down, the mold smell was settling in, and it just

54 | OutClique.com

kept raining. As we emptied water it just kept coming through the walls.” The more Hyde and her team got into the recovery, the more they realized how dangerous the situation was. She learned that the cellulose in walls and flooring is a food source for ‘black water’ contaminants, which breeds fungus and pathogens. The circumstances are perfect for mold and bacteria to grow just out of sight. “As we began to take down the walls the damage and concerns were evident. The water was throughout the entire building even those center locations not near the outside wall.” The timing couldn’t be worse. Broward House just received a $67,000 increase in property insurance. They do have flood insurance, it’s not enough and they expect an additional $825,000 in recovery costs. In addition, their major fundraiser, Dining Out for Life, was scheduled for the day after the flood and was severely affected. On The Move Broward House clients already face instability and

uncertainty in their lives. Adding in a new housing crisis could be too much for some. But Hyde and her team stepped up. Seventy-four residents have been moved, even while sixty-one of the staff members were dealing with their own flood-related emergencies.

Dignity is a word that can be too easily tossed around to make a point and then abandoned. For Hyde, it’s at the core of her mission. “People deserve to be cared for – all people all of the time. So many people I meet do not believe they deserve good or have been dismissed by others.”

Hyde says it was a team effort. Residents who could, worked to save their homes and help. One moment in the crisis still resonates. “Ms. Eunice is 76 years old. She lost her home to foreclosure after damage she could not afford to repair with her limited income and inability to work. She has been living with HIV for 18 years and is a kind and strong woman. The flood caused fear of again being homeless, as I left one evening, she stopped me and grabbed my hand and said, ‘Please don’t forget me.’”

“I see it as our role to make them feel seen and heard and to help them believe in their core they are deserving of health, deserving of a good life.” It’s those beliefs that motivate her day after day. “Each day I get to be a part of creating a space and witnessing people, both clients and staff, reach their goals and recognize their value.”

A Call to Care & Compassion Hyde’s dedication to bettering people goes back to her younger days, when she watched someone slowly succumb to illness with little or no help from others. “When I was a waitress 30 years ago, I watched a regular diner die from AIDS with no support.”

She hoped we would be further along in this fight. “Thirty years ago, I did not believe we would still be fighting for basic rights for people.” However, her vision of a more perfect world will not be deterred. “We are and we will continue to fight fiercely for people to have access to the care, respect, and home they deserve. I am filled each day with hope as I get to be surrounded by the good in this world, people caring for each other. I truly breathe our mission.”

Jackson Health "Stars" Shine at Golden Angels Gala

Jackson Health Foundation hosted their annual Golden Angels Gala on April 22nd at Ice Palace Studios in Miami. The gala raised more than $3.5 million and paid tribute to Jackson Health System’s lifesaving work, and honored the Golden Angel Society, their premier giving group, whose members play a vital role in advancing Jackson’s mission through their philanthropic efforts. This year's gala honored the team of healthcare providers at Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital for their amazing work and extraordinary stories of lifesaving patient care over the past 30 years. The Ryder Trauma team received a long and heartfelt standing ovation from the attendees. It was an emotional and unforgettable moment. The program also featured a video chronicling the journey of Danielle Crease, whose life was saved at Ryder Trauma after she suffered life-threatening injuries in a boating accident. Crease received medical treatment under the care of Allan Levy, MD, a UHealth – University of Miami Health System neurosurgeon at Jackson Memorial who obtained approval from the FDA to perform a unique procedure in

hopes of regenerating the sciatic nerve in Crease’s left leg. It had been completely severed in the accident. This was the world’s first procedure of its kind and it was a success. In addition, Jackson Health announced a few special gifts that directly impact their mission: Joe Deitch and Tao Jones Foundation – $1 million donation; Bank of America – $250,000 grant; West Coast University – $150,000 donation. Another highlight was a chance drawing for an all-electric 2023 Audi Q4 e-tron, donated by THE COLLECTION. The following sponsors made this event possible: Platinum – Jeannie Etter and David Coulson, Jerry Cody, THE COLLECTION, and Southern Glazer’s Wine & Spirits; Gold – G City; Silver – Trish and Dan Bell, José Milton Foundation, Ryder, and Florida National University; Bronze – First Horizon, AvMed, and West Coast University; Event – Miami Marlins, Constellation, Knight Parking, and Buckner, Shifrin, Etter, Dugan, & Bradfute, PA; Media – Miami Herald/El Nuevo Herald, Miami Kids Magazine, and S Revista.

Rod Davis

Connecting Communities, Businesses, and People Sitting down with Rod Davis makes you feel quickly at ease. His effortless calm demeanor and confidence are immediately apparent. His ability to connect with others is a product of his natural gifts and his 39 years of serving the Better Business Bureau (BBB). In OutClique's conversation with Rod, it is evident that he is intuitive and quickly understands a person's intent and motivation, an increasingly rare commodity in today's society. These traits and hard work make him a tremendous asset to the South Florida Community as CEO of the BBB, serving both Southeast Florida and the Caribbean. Rod's dedication to the community does not end as the South Florida and Caribbean BBB leader. He is actively involved in many organizations, currently heading the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility, (DEIA) Committee for the International Association of BBB,

62 | OutClique.com

encouraging diversity because, as he put it, "It is not just good for business, but because it is the right thing to do." OutClique got the opportunity to chat with Rod to learn more about the man behind the most important resource for local businesses in the area, the BBB. Destiny Haggett: It is apparent that diversity is important to you. How do you achieve that in the BBB and in all the organizations you serve? Rod Davis: Like so many people of my generation, I grew up in a closeted time. We know what it is like not to be visible or recognized except in derogatory terms. I previously lived in Washington, DC, and moved to Ft. Lauderdale in 2015. My family is from West Virginia, and living in dynamic and diverse markets adds tremendously to one's life experience. When I was first coming out in

DC, many of my closest friends were minorities, and just as the tagline from one of my favorite movies, His Secret Life, "some of the best families are made with friends." We learned and supported each other, and sharing foods, culture, and experiences, in addition to friendship, opened my eyes to communities and challenges I had never considered. Destiny Haggett: Can you speak to the changes and transformations you have witnessed in your career to LGBTQ+ owned businesses and how this community has been served over the years? Rod Davis: Over the course of my life, I have seen so much change. We had moved from a time when most people remained in the closet and very few businesses supported LGBTQ+ employees, businesses, and customers to a time when our dollars and our contributions are valued. We still have more work to gain full equality, but it truly is the minority who seeks to deny equality. It is essential that we all come out so those who love us know and support us, and those with whom we work and associate, see our community as a vital contributor. Role models play a big part in gaining support for us, and whether it is Tim Cook at Apple or Jim Fitterling at Dow, each new successful LGBTQ+ individual makes the next person to step up from our community more likely to be chosen and more likely to be successful.

industries to learn about their inspiration for starting the business, their goals, and what they believe equates to success. Some businesses prioritize purpose and profit. These businesses are most compelling. 4Ocean is an example of a type of business with a purpose integrated into everything they do. Their commitment is to pull a pound of trash from the ocean for each item sold. Some businesses focus on goals that, while smaller in scale, may have more importance to some people. Hiring veterans or people with autism is a goal for some businesses in our area, and each new hire makes a difference in someone's life. BBB4Good is a test program we are piloting locally to find and share these businesses with consumers. Destiny Haggett: What are upcoming projects you are working on that have you excited? Rod Davis: We are currently working on our Business Engage Summit, featuring the BBB Torch Awards that will be held on August 23rd, 2023. We will have a chance to share some of the best ideas and processes to make our businesses successful and highlight businesses built on Character, Culture, Customers, and Community. We also support a local nonprofit group/organization each year, and this year will be supporting Junior Achievement of South Florida.

Destiny Haggett: When you meet a new business owner unfamiliar with what the BBB does, what key points would you like them to know? Rod Davis: The first thing I usually have to say is that we are not a government agency. We are a local nonprofit organization committed to helping our business community employ best practices, gather feedback from consumer experiences, and help consumers find businesses who have earned their trust based on the community data shared with BBB. Destiny Haggett: How do you measure success for a new business outside of profitability? Rod Davis: Each business is as unique as the owner. I appreciate the opportunity to step into businesses in all

The Power of Two

Location. Location. Location. But when you’re ready to buy or sell in this hectic real estate market, it’s also who you work with that matters. Just like any great relationship, searching for the right realtor can be like kissing frogs to find a prince. Sometimes, you find two.

multiple times during the day and you also want to see the house during the week, nights and weekends.” Providing an educated viewpoint on schools is another one of the former professor’s strengths. “After 30 years of teaching, I know most of the schools in Broward County,” he says.

“I like to say we’re the BOGO of realtors,” jokes Richard Schultz, one half of the Pride Power Group at Coldwell Banker Realty. Schultz and his husband of 39 years, Gary Keating, proudly provide buyers and sellers with their own brand of insight and experience long after the transactions are complete.

Born and raised in Miami Beach, Schultz possesses a native knowledge of South Florida that extends to the sort of minutia many realtors wouldn’t think of—like whether the positioning of a pool is suitable for a client’s needs. “For snowbirds who only visit in the wintertime, south, southeast, and southwest positioned pools provide a perfect temperature,” he explains. “Year-round residents want to enjoy a pool that doesn’t get direct sunlight in the summertime. Who’s going to think of that if they don’t know the area?”

“When buyers move in, we say, ‘Now listen, the first thing you’re going to need to spend money on is the bones,’” says Keating. “We continue to help them even after we’ve sold the property.” Nodding in agreement, Schultz adds, “We check in with them. Everyone becomes a Facebook friend.” Long-lasting relationships come easily to the duo who list integrity, diligence, and honesty as the secrets to their success, even if it means not making a sale. “We tell customers if we don’t think they should buy the property,” explains Schultz. “It’s our obligation.” Another commitment they take seriously is ensuring that they never pass the buck. “When we list a property, we show that property every time,” says Keating. “They hired us. How can we sell it if we’re not there?” The pair’s advice to buyers might seem obvious but it's often overlooked by other realtors. “The location is never going to change,” says Keating, “so visit the property

Schultz is also well-versed in the Realtor Florida Bar contract, a skill he honed on the management side at Coldwell Bank answering questions from agents. “I got every question you can imagine,” he recalls. Learning and understanding the ins and outs of real estate has taught the duo valuable lessons which they share with their clients. “We tell customers to not only pre-qualify for a mortgage, but for insurance, too,” Schultz says. “Wind, fire and flood.” While Schultz points out that, “paradise is pricey,” there’s still no shortage of new residents moving into South Florida or realtors to choose from. “The highest compliment we receive is a referral from a customer of ours,” says Keating. Agrees Schultz, “We’re very grateful for that.”

Bouvèé Babble Drag me on a CRUISE!

In the next 18 months, I will be your host around the world! In a few special cases, even Jennifer McClain or Rick Leonard are joining me! Why cruise? There are a lot of advantages to taking a cruise, especially if you live at the first port of call, like Fort Lauderdale or the surrounding area. I always recommend cruising (on a ship . . . get your mind out of the gutter) because it helps to present a sampling of areas of the world! If you enjoy the sample that you experience, you can always plan an extended trip back, solely at that port.

If you hate the port, guess what? In most cases, you leave that day and you’re on to the next. Prior to these impending itineraries, I have cruised on my own many times with Norwegian, Royal Caribbean, and Princess Cruises. I prefer these lines for their onboard pace, programming, and cleanliness of ships. For this reason, I am so excited to share several groups I am working with in the coming year and half that offer a variety of different experiences for the LGBTQIA+ community, and our allies!

Adventure Bears The group I will be traveling most with is Adventure Bears. This is a queer owned and run travel group, based in Wilton Manors, that welcomes travelers of all kinds. Though most of the people on the trips are members of the bear community and male, we have seen several straight allies travel with this group as well as female members of the queer community.

Avi Ram Airbrush Hero Avi Ram stands out by blending in. If you’ve driven along Wilton Drive at any point in the past few years, you’ve seen his work. The prolific muralist has several pieces displayed on walls across Wilton Manors and South Florida. While his murals are gorgeous, his hidden masterpieces have fans squinting their eyes and dropping their jaws. Known as the Airbrush Hero, he’s been body painting people for years. Ram is taking it to the next level and highlighting ten of Broward County’s most beautiful locations. He teamed up with Visit Lauderdale, Broward’s pro-LGBTQIA+ tourism arm, for his Hidden in Plain Sight series. “I really enjoy working with Visit Lauderdale. When I came with the project, they really fell in love with this idea,” Ram told OutClique. Ram takes a model and uses body paint to blend them into the background. Models can be in living rooms, garages, anywhere. For his series with Visit Lauderdale and their

Everyone Under the Sun marketing campaign, they are collaborating to find ten sites that epitomize Broward County and its welcoming atmosphere. Recently he did a shoot at Bonnet House, which features both natural and architectural beauty. His model was local celebrity FayWhat?!. “She is such an amazing person and has such a bubbly personality, she is so fun to work with,” he said. “I don’t think there’s just one word I could use to describe my time with Avi Ram. I was obsessed with him from Skin Wars. He calls himself the Airbrush Hero, but he is a genius,” Fay told OutClique. The key to a project like body painting is establishing trust between the artist and model. “Being almost half naked, being camouflaged body painting with people watching, it can make you feel uncomfortable. I took her out of her comfort zone.”

“I knew I would be out in a beautiful garden, free to the air and very vulnerable. With every paint brush, he made me feel more and more safe,” she said. “As he painted me into this beautiful backdrop that is Bonnet House, I felt powerful.” Of course, not everyone gets it, as Ram found out during his shoot at Flamingo Gardens. The model was painted as a flamingo and something you would never expect happened. “One of the flamingos did not like it, and started attacking the model.” The video went viral. Ram is documenting the experience for his series, Hidden In Plain Sight, which he posts on his Facebook page. He’s a veteran of reality TV, having been a contestant or a judge on several shows. Over time he’s learned to shoot and edit as well as lighting and audio. Now the projects are getting so big, he’s hired a crew. “When you start big projects like that, you realize you can get overwhelmed. You’re not focusing on the art. So now it’s time to hire people to do the side jobs and let me focus on the creative part.” Ram is also an accomplished muralist, especially around his adopted hometown. “I definitely put a lot of color in Wilton Manors. I like making my city beautiful.”

He recently did the side of Out of the Closet on Wilton Drive. Other murals are at Hunters Nightclub, Rosie’s, Wilton’s Manor Doggie Daycare Resort and Spa, and more. By doing murals and body painting for so long, one would think he has a favorite by now. Ram insists that’s not the case. “My passion is art in general. There are things that I like with wall murals, and there are things that I like with body painting.” What he is certain about is his love of community, which will see much more of his work very soon. “Every time I do something for the community, I definitely feel the support. It makes me feel good. It feels like home. I’m originally from Israel, but I feel like Wilton Manors and Oakland Park are my home.”

Disney’s Finding Nemo JR. In rehearsing Disney’s Finding Nemo JR., young actors have embarked on their own journey of discovery as members of the Young Professionals camp presented by the Broward Center for the Performing Arts and The Performance Project. Like their older professional counterparts, each actor who is in the ninth grade or higher, had to pass an audition performing a one minute monologue and singing one minute of a showtune. Once accepted, the campers have been in seven-hour day rehearsals and classes to prepare for opening night. Rehearsals are under the direction of Nina Felice, who founded the Performance Project following a career as a professional actress. She recalls the experience of directing Schoolhouse Rock Live, her first musical using a mix of adult professionals and child actors. “From the first rehearsal to final performance, I saw a transformation in the young actors,” Felice recalls. “Those that were overactive became more focused, some who were reserved had blossomed out of their shell, students who were apathetic now had a sense of purpose, and individuals who were unorganized were now goal oriented.” In 2006, Felice began renting space at The Broward Center prior to entering into a full-fledged partnership with the venue in 2008 to create the Summer Theater Camp program that now offers age-appropriate camps during two sessions each summer at the Rose Miniaci Arts Education Center at the Broward Center, the Aventura

Arts & Cultural Center in Miami-Dade and at the Rose and Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center at Nova. The Young Professionals are getting ready to take the stage in the Amaturo Theater at the Broward Center from Thursday, July 6 - Saturday, July 15, 2023, in this 60-minute adaptation for young audiences of the beloved 2003 Pixar movie Finding Nemo. Described as plucky, resilient and heartwarming, the musical follows the adventures of Marlin, a timid clownfish, and his son, Nemo. After Nemo is captured in the Great Barrier Reef and taken to Sydney, they both face challenges on the journey to be reunited. In addition to rehearsing the work, the young cast has also been collaborating on a sensory-inclusive version to be presented on Saturday, July 15 at 11 a.m. for children and adults on the autism spectrum as well as individuals with other sensitivity issues or developmental challenges. Slight adjustments have been made to the production including reduced sound levels, no flashing or strobe lights and minimal special effects to create a welcoming and supportive environment. Spaces are also still available for the second session of Summer Theater Camp 2023. Each camp session, regardless of location, culminates in a live performance on a professional stage at the Broward Center. Registration for Summer Camp 2023 is available online at BrowardCenter.org/EducationPrograms/ Camp, by phone at 954-468-2689 or by emailing registrar@browardcenter.org.

love to be in The Drowsy Chaperone, and Into the Woods is also one of my favorites. Name a Sondheim musical, and I’d pretty much love to be in it. Denny Patterson: It was also very exciting when the news broke that you will be in the upcoming season of Doctor Who. I know you probably can’t say much, but what can you tell us about the Doctor’s “most powerful enemy yet?” Jinkx Monsoon: Well, lots of people have deduced that the character has something to do with music. That's powerful costume design! My character has piano keys all over their costume, so that is a good hint, but really, every single person in the cast and crew of Doctor Who has treated me with so much trust and respect. Not once have I felt like, oh, I'm not a real TV actor. Even though I've only done very few scripted television appearances, these people treat me like a pro. With that respect and trust, I'm able to do work that I'm very, very proud of, and that's going to really serve the episode. I'm not dealing with any impostor syndrome or anxiety because no one on set is allowing me to feel that way. Denny Patterson: Was there anything in particular you wanted to bring to this role? Jinkx Monsoon: I just wanted to serve and deliver the character well because Russell Davies is such a great writer. Even though there are aspects of the character that were differently written so that I could show a wide range of my own talents, I just wanted to play a good Doctor Who villain. I didn't want the fact that I'm a generally bubbly, kind person to stand in the way of me being genuinely terrifying, and from the reviews I've been getting on set, I am genuinely terrifying (laughs). So, mission accomplished! Denny Patterson: What are some future goals you hope to accomplish with your career and platform? Jinkx Monsoon: Honestly, all I can say is I just want to keep doing more of the same. I'm exactly where I've always wanted to be career wise, so I want to keep digging in. I'd love to do more TV and film work.

I worked on Happiest Season with BenDeLaCreme, and that was my first big budget studio film. Clea DuVall had written roles for both DeLa and I, and then she directed it and invited us to be part of that special, wonderful film that was really a bright spot of our Christmas in quarantine. So, I’d love to do more of that, and I'd love to do more Broadway work. I’m very, very happy with where my career is, and I'd like to keep taking it further in this direction. Denny Patterson: Before we wrap up, are there any other upcoming projects or anything else you'd like to mention or plug? Jinkx Monsoon: In April, I released a cover of a song from the 1930s cabaret era called “The Lavender Song,” and I released it in collaboration with the charity organization Everytown for Gun Safety, which works to spread education and real information about gun safety and gun reform. It works to stop the spread of misinformation about how deadly guns are and how much we need to reform our practices around them. This song is very, very special to me, and I think it's a very poignant, precious song for what we're facing in the LGBTQ community and in the world right now. I was inspired to put the song out the day that the Colorado Springs shooting happened, and since that tragedy, more and more things have happened. I basically thought the community needed to be reminded of this song because this song was considered the first queer anthem in western civilization. It's a very special song, and you can stream it on Spotify.

Kevin Veloz Talks Island City Stage’s Thrill Me

South Florida actor Kevin Veloz, who was most recently seen in Island City Stage’s production of Pageant as Miss Industrial Northeast, will be returning to the popular queer theater venue for its upcoming performances of Thrill Me, playing August 3 - September 3, 2023. A dark and thrilling musical by Stephen Dolginoff, Thrill Me has become a modern classic. Set in 1924 Chicago, it is based on the true story of Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb, the so-called "thrill killers" who murdered a young boy in order to commit "the perfect crime." Loeb is obsessed with crime, but Leopold is obsessed with Loeb. Stepping into the shoes of Leopold, Veloz took some time to talk about the production, his character, and passion for acting with OutClique. Denny Patterson: How excited are you to return to Island City Stage and perform in Thrill Me? Kevin Veloz: Pretty ecstatic! Pageant was such a great experience, and I feel thrilled to work with Andy and the team once again. Island City Stage has such a beautiful history of giving a platform to queer voices, as well as providing an example of some of the excellent stories that South Florida has to offer. Denny Patterson: Why did you want to be involved with this production? Kevin Veloz: Beyond the interest to dig my teeth into something new and riveting, I'm especially interested in Thrill Me because it feels like an intimate affair. Nathan Leopold is a tragic character that wants nothing more than to love and be loved in return. Always presenting, always calculating. This musical gives a deep and nuanced look into his life from the beginning of his affair with Richard to the end. The space at Island City Stage lends itself to that up close and personal feeling that I believe the author intended the play to have. Denny Patterson: You are playing Nathan, who was a real-life person. How do you want to approach this character?

Kevin Veloz: Above all, with sensitivity. These are real events that occurred in which a young boy lost his life. As with all works based on real events, there will be liberties taken and there will be some filling in the blanks, but as an artist, the best thing I can do is to be honest with the character. Try to figure out the ‘why’ behind his actions, taking into account the time period and what the police revealed, and just go from there! Denny Patterson: What do you ultimately hope audiences take away from Thrill Me? Kevin Veloz: Hopefully, the audience is able to see our show and get some insight into their own lives. I think that’s the goal for a lot of artists. To collaborate on a piece that really affects the people watching it, and with Thrill Me, evaluate their limits when communicating with people they love. Maybe identify signs of toxic behavior within some of their relationships. I also, obviously, hope they enjoy it and laugh in moments of levity. Denny Patterson: Have you always had a passion for acting? Kevin Veloz: Ever since I sang “I Will Survive” on grandparent’s day in the fourth grade to thunderous applause, I always had a passion for attention (laughs). Embarrassing to admit, but relatable. It wasn’t until I did a school production of A Few Good Men in high school that I started to understand the importance of storytelling and the art of acting. Throughout times in my life when I’ve dealt with self-doubt and general stress, acting has been a friend to me. The characters I’ve met and got to portray taught me lessons that I could carry with me as I grew. Acting also comes with a lot of rejection. People won’t always believe in you. You won’t always be right for the project. The beauty for me doesn’t just come when I land a role or when someone praises me for a performance. The beauty is in knowing that I’m capable of taking that leap of faith. Capable of artistic expression that will hopefully reach someone out there that will in turn feel capable of expressing themselves. Acting is my life, and I feel lucky when I get the chance to do it.

Rock stars may come and go, but certain artists truly stand the test of time. In an ever-changing landscape of shifting musical trends, Grammy nominated Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee Belinda Carlisle is a rare talent who continues to remain relevant after nearly four decades in the business. From performing with the Go-Go’s to having a successful career as a solo artist, Carlisle has delivered a string of classic pop hits that have become the soundtrack of a generation. Additionally, she has indelibly touched the hearts of fans around the world with her unique blend of gutsy vocals, emotively charged melodies, and picturesque lyrics. Lucky for us, she has no plans to slow down. Earlier this year, Carlisle announced the U.S. string of her critically acclaimed Decades tour, which will showcase her vast catalog of more than 20 top-charting singles, and in May, she released a brand-new five-track EP titled Kismet, the pop icon’s first English language studio recording since 1997. OutClique had the opportunity to sit down with Carlisle and talk more about the EP and tour, as well as her venture into music, gaining fame with the Go-Go’s, and being a loving and supportive LGBTQ ally. Denny Patterson: Belinda, can you begin by telling us what audiences can expect from your upcoming Decades tour? Belinda Carlisle: Songs from most of my solo albums. Not the chanting album or the French album, but the other ones, as well as a few Go-Go’s songs and probably a couple songs from my new EP, Kismet. I have a lot of material to draw from. Denny Patterson: With the Go-Go’s, you put out some major hits like “We Got the Beat” and “Vacation,” but one of your most iconic tracks is from when you went solo “Heaven Is a Place on Earth.” Do you remember how that song came to fruition? Belinda Carlisle: I remember the first time it was played. Rick Nowels was playing it on piano and Ellen Shipley was singing it, and I just thought, oh my God! It sounds like a hit, but a lot of things come into play besides a song just being good. It’s also about what’s going on with the charts, what’s going on in music, and what’s going on in the world. I thought, if the stars aligned, then I have a good Author: Denny Patterson

chance with this song because it really did sound like a hit. In my career, I’ve been doing this for over 40 years, there’s only been a few songs that have come along where I got that feeling from. A lot of factors play in, so I never get my hopes up, but it certainly did sound like a hit. Denny Patterson: In May, you released your new EP, Kismet. Is there an overall story it’s telling? Belinda Carlisle: No, there’s no overall story. It’s basically all about different types of love. Pleading love, insane love. They’re all love songs, but no, there’s no overall message of any sort. They’re just good, solid pop songs. Denny Patterson: In what ways does Kismet show the evolution of Belinda Carlisle? Belinda Carlisle: I think my vocals are stronger than they used to be. In fact, I know they are. I do a lot of work on them, so they are better. I'm pretty much doing the same kind of unmistakable sound that I have, but it does show a little bit of growth, especially vocal growth. That’s the most important thing. Denny Patterson: Outside of music, you are a very big advocate and supporter of the LGBTQ community, especially after your son came out at the age of 14. Do you think there's a special way of showing love between a straight parent and a queer child? Belinda Carlisle: I think support is the most important thing. It was funny when my son came out because I always kind of knew anyway. It wasn't like a big surprise, but coming out can still be a really intense experience, for both parent and child. I instantly thought, what kind of world is this going to be for my gay child? He was coached by PFLAG, of which I’m a big supporter. A lot of kids don't get that support from their parents when they come out, and I don't understand that either. I really don't. When he came out, he said something to me along the lines of, “I like boys.” I was driving and had to pullover, and I was like, okay. But then he said, “my sexuality doesn’t define me.” I said, that’s absolutely true. My son is way smarter than me and way more evolved than me, but I think the most important things for a relationship between a parent and queer child is support, acceptance, and love. The world is going to be more difficult for them now, no matter what. It's important to support them. Hulu’s Drag Me to Dinner Is Deliciously Addictive and Chaotic Hope you’re hungry! Drag Me to Dinner, Hulu’s new glamorous and messy faux competition series that no one takes too seriously, is serving up a great big helping of drag chaos. Created and produced by Neil Patrick Harris and husband David Burtka, this totally bonkers project is a riotous, fourth-wall-breaking, unapologetic send up to traditional reality shows. In each episode, two teams of popular drag queens go head-to-head to throw the most fabulous, “drag-tastical” dinner party, hoping to be crowned champion and walk away with the grandest “prize” in television history: The Glorious Golden Grater. “We’ve had the idea for this show for over five years,” Burtka says. “When we were filming, we just couldn’t believe it, and as we were filming, we were having the best time. I hope that is conveyed to audiences. We were able to come up with a cast that just made us

cackle every day, and it was a blast to do. Hopefully, it’s a blast to watch.” “We laughed at the idea of it, and we laughed at the notion of what it could be,” Harris adds. “Like David said, we couldn’t believe it. When Hulu said yes and gave us sort of carte blanche creativity, saying they believed in us and believed in this, we were blown away. The entire time, it’s been a laughing, smiling, joyfest.” “We didn’t know if it would be hilarious or a piece of crap,” Burtka concludes. Each episode will also have its own unique theme, as revealed by Burtka, and joining Harris at the judges table are drag superstar Bianca Del Rio and actress Haneefah Wood. Serving as host is none other than New York City legend Murray Hill, “the hardest-working middle-aged man in show business.”

“Working with Bianca, Murray, and Haneefah - what a dream team,” Burtka exclaims. “These are some of the funniest people alive.” Although Drag Me to Dinner might look like a trainwreck to some, Harris notes that the show was sort of designed to be that way. “It was always intentional that we would show backstage and sometimes see the cameras,” he says. We didn’t want it to feel precious because I think that’s what’s fun about drag. The duality between glamor, perfect lighting, and amazing lip syncs, but also the messiness of it all. It’s highbrow lowbrow at the same time.” The drag duos include Alexis Mateo and Vanessa Vanjie Mateo, Raja and Detox, Trinity the Tuck and Bebe Zahara Benet, Morgan McMichaels and Mayhem Miller, Latrice Royale and Manila Luzon, Kim Chi and Naomi Smalls, BenDeLaCreme and Jinkx Monsoon, Heidi N Closet and Jaida Essence Hall, Ginger Minj and Nina West, Gigi Goode and Symone, Darienne Lake and Mrs. Kasha Davis, Alaska and Willam, Kiki Ball-Change and

Thorgy Thor, Sherry Vine and Jackie Beat, Rhea Litré and Jasmine Rice LaBeija, Merrie Cherry and Pixie Aventura, Meatball and Biqtch Puddin, Selma Nilla and Chelsea Piers, Peachez Iman Cummings and Marti Gould Cummings, and Peaches Christ and the late Heklina. Teams are focused on multiple criteria: food and drink, design and decor, entertainment, and overall vibe. “There are some girls on this show who can really cook,” Burtka says. “Latrice Royale’s chicken was so good, and Pixie Aventure made a jambalaya that was amazing. I want the recipe.” “And make sure to keep an eye out on some of the performances,” Harris states. “BenDeLaCreme and Jinkx Monsoon singing an original song as mermaids and watching Merrie Cherry smash cans of beer with her chest was like watching a Gallagher show go wrong. It really runs the gamut. Everyone is radically different in their own great way.” Drag Me to Dinner is now streaming on Hulu.

ArtServe Inaugural Impact Award Winners Show Special Talent for Making a Difference Through the Arts ArtServe—one of the nation’s longest-standing arts incubators—recently held its inaugural “Impact Awards” to honor the most transformative and influential artists and arts supporters in Greater Fort Lauderdale local media, the community, business and philanthropy. At the event sponsored by FPL, Primo Liquors, John Knox Village, OutClique and Truist, attendees and honorees enjoyed a fashion show by artist Kenny Ruiz of MagChop, along with cocktails and live music as they mingled amid ArtServe’s successful “Art and Mental Health” exhibit currently being displayed through Friday, June 16. “Our inaugural Impact Award winners showed exactly why the creative industries are such an important economic driver,” ArtServe Executive Director Jason Hughes said. “In their own individual ways, each honoree exemplified how the human experience of artistic self-actualization can motivate others to also dream big and, in turn, propel their own vision forward, too.”

The ArtServe’s 2023 Impact Award winners expressed their respective gratitude for the recognition: Yvonne Pubien, whose arts and crafts studio Nailed It DIY Studio Fort Lauderdale has changed lives and brought diversity to her franchise nationwide said “What an amazing night, celebrating with all the honorees and guests. My husband and I were overwhelmingly showered with beautiful comments about the work we are doing in the City of Lauderhill and the impact we are making with youths and young adults. I have received many awards as a police officer, but this one means the most, because it recognizes me as Yvonne Pubien the business owner, mother, friend and wife. I’m so thankful for all the people at ArtServe that night and all the love we felt from each one.” Marc Martorana, a retired professional big-budget party planner who uses his unique catering artistry skills to help local non-profits with fundraising, said “As I reflect on Artserve honoring me for the ‘Philanthropist of Impact’

award, I am truly humbled and honored. This award has motivated me to take it a step further by encouraging others to start their own journey of giving and making their own impact. Receiving this recognition has enabled me to come full circle in my life, knowing I took the right path and made the right choice. I am truly humbled by ArtServe's generosity. Thank you ArtServe for all you have done, and all you continue to do.” Dr. Steven Evans, whose love of the arts led him to create Outclique, a monthly arts, entertainment, and travel magazine popular beyond the LGBTQ community, noted that “South Florida is a vibrant place to live, work, and vacation. There is something for everyone. Come see what we are about - a Place for Everyone Under the Sun. Come sing, dance, laugh, eat, or just enjoy our sun soaked beaches. Thank you to ArtServe for seeing in me the joy and vision that I want to bring to all my readers. May happiness be abounding.” Dan Perez, an ArtServe graduate and professional photographer who leverages his success to help other up-and-coming artists, said “I only started to consider myself more of an ‘artist’ and less of an ‘entrepreneur’ a few years ago. So, to be honored by ArtServe at their inaugural Impact Awards was a special honor, especially considering all the other remarkable honorees. Every ArtServe event is an exceptional experience—a gallery

filled with fabulous people from whom you can always feel the love—but this one topped them all. ArtServe is a very special organization!” Holy Cross Health, which has successfully created a luxurious sanctuary feeling within its spaces by incorporating artwork in collaboration with ArtServe, noted that it was honored to be chosen as ArtServe’s Business Partner of Impact at the Inaugural Impact Awards Gala. “Our patients, families, staff and guests in the Dorothy Mangurian Comprehensive Women’s Center have enjoyed the amazing exhibits provided to us by the talented artists at ArtServe for more than 10 years. It is proven that artwork in healthcare settings can positively impact patients’ physical and mental well-being, reduce stress, anxiety and improve mood and provide a sense of calm and relaxation. We thank ArtServe for honoring us and for their continued partnership.” Funding Arts Broward (FAB), which sustains cultural enrichment in Broward County by funding high quality visual and performing arts programs that are open to the public, said “A fantastic evening where the spirit of community prevailed. Much like ArtServe, and the honorees, FAB nurtures and supports not only artists, but members of Broward’s arts community alike. Together we rise when we recognize and cultivate unity as a collective mission.”
