One Year Later

By Steven O. Evans, PhD March of 2020 was when the world all started to change. Our calendars and inboxes were full of events, parties, concerts, and nights out at the clubs. Then seemingly overnight, the global pandemic took over. My inbox and phone were full again, but with cancellations from all of our dear friends in the arts, entertainment, travel, food, and other similar organizations. My heart began to break for all these cancellations, closings, and postponements, as I know them both on professional and personal levels. What started was one of the most difficult times to come. We all watched and endured the uncertainty of 2020. The financial and emotional toll was difficult. Businesses, events, and gatherings ceased. We were forced to be home alone, isolated from our emotional support networks of friends and family. We relied on takeout meals, video chat, working from home, unemployment, food stamps, and many other ways to just “make it.” One year later, we have a new president and vaccines are being implemented. There is hope. Many of our clubs and restaurants are open with appropriate social distancing. Our theaters have been offering online shows and are starting to offer social-distanced in-person events. We have heard of some silver linings. Real estate trends in South Florida have seen an increase. We have learned much about online production of musical and theatrical shows. Businesses, such as insurance, have proven to be sustainable. The travel industry is seeing a return to normalcy. I believe 2021 is going to be a year of abundance. I am excited for the new opportunities, fresh ideas, and what possibilities will come. All the best, Steven O. Evans, PhD Editor in Chief

Dreamscapes for 2021 and Beyond Travel in a Post COVID-19 World

By Craig Smith, President of Source Events | Photos Courtesy of Source Events

I

n 2020 we had time to reflect on what we missed. Travel gives us more than new experiences and Instagram pics. Travel builds empathy, sparks connections and creates new friendships. We learn about remote cultures and different ways of life. As we explore faraway lands, we learn more about ourselves.

pandemic to spark a positive outlook on life, whether that’s a day trip to a museum or a journey abroad. During recent COVID-19 restrictions, 65% of travelers reported being excited about traveling in the future, while 61% suggested they are more appreciative of travel and won’t take it for granted when they can do so again.

This year we’ll see travelers looking to recoup these benefits as quickly as possible, making up for lost time. Traveler’s wanderlust will be stronger than ever. It will be a year of renewal and reconnection.

In between napping, working from home, and watching Netflix, many of us spend our free time scrolling through old vacation pics and ‘liking’ any image of a beach on Instagram. Almost all of us – 95% – have been spending much of our free time looking for travel inspiration, with over a third – 38% – looking for a potential destination as often as once a week!

Anticipating and Planning Travel Makes You Happier Even though you may not be traveling now, it doesn’t mean that trip planning is canceled too. There’s good news for globe-trotters: According to researchers, planning and anticipating a trip can be almost as enjoyable as going on the trip itself. A 2014 Cornell University study showed that the anticipation of an experience such as a trip can increase a person’s happiness substantially- much more so than anticipating the purchase of material goods. If traveling was previously considered a luxury, it’s now going to become a necessity post8 | OutClique.com

Travel Trends for 2021 and Beyond Travel Advisors: Don’t Leave Home Without One The pandemic only served to highlight the critical role of travel advisors – anyone who didn’t have an advisor in 2020 probably regretted it. As a result, in 2021 we will see travel agents having the required knowledge. Want some great travel inspiration? Check. Looking for the best deals? They have you covered. Need an update on the latest health and safety standards. Done.

Looking for the latest news on trip insurance? You got it. If you’ve had to change a trip or manage a big travel disruption on your own, you probably understand why it’s helpful to have a travel advisor in your corner. Going Big: Bucket List Adventures That Make Travel Dreams Come True Go big or stay home. That’s the theme we’re seeing. Amadeus surveys found that 55% of travelers said they would travel for 14 days or more, and 60% expected to take only a few trips a year – which suggest that if people travel, they may want to go all out. To make up for lost time, people are gravitating to once-in-a-lifetime adventures. After being restless at home with time to fantasize about their next adventure, travelers want to make up for lost time, looking for unique experiences. Understanding the Impact of Travel: Smaller Footprints and Bigger Hearts Pre-COVID, there was a growing understanding of the impact, good and bad, that travel has on the world around us. The enforced pause has given travelers and the wider travel industry time to think deeply about how we move around the planet. Travelers also want to make a difference while exploring the world. A recent survey found that 68% of travelers want the money they spend on travel to go back into the communities they visit. What is a Vaccine Pass or Passport? While negative COVID-19 tests are required before traveling to most international destinations as well as before returning to the

10 | OutClique.com

U.S., as vaccines become more widely available, it’s expected that many destinations will require a vaccination pass or passport documenting that you have been vaccinated. The versions being worked on now by airlines, travel industry groups, and technology companies will be something that you can pull up on your mobile phone as an app or part of your digital wallet. Travel Trends and Destinations As a travel advisor and tour operator, Source Events recently is getting more requests for remote destinations far away from crowds, such as Tahiti, Hawaii, and the Greek Islands. One trend we’re seeing is that travelers want more luxury, and if they cruise they are looking for more intimate luxury vessels. Our Source Events Dreams of Tahiti Cruise this September 2021 has been popular with luxury LGBTQ+ travelers looking for an intimate, fun getaway. We are also getting many requests for our small group trips to exotic bucket-list destinations, like our Wonders of Egypt this December 2021. We are getting requests for private trips for birthday celebrations that were put on hold as well as special anniversaries and family reunions. Many small groups are requesting luxury private villas for beach vacations in Mexico, the Caribbean, and Costa Rica. Travel is going to look different post-COVID. Cities that were once crowded will suddenly be enjoyable again, though many travelers will opt for more isolated escapes. But, no matter what, we will be back in the skies later this year. So, the question becomes, “What’s your dreamscape for 2021 and beyond?”

The World of Anna Sui at NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale February 28 through October 3, 2021

ith over 100 looks, The World of Anna Sui explores the glamorous and eclectic world of one of New York’s most acclaimed designers. The exhibition invites viewers to step inside Sui’s imagination to discover her creative process and the diverse influences that contribute to her signature aesthetic sensibility. The World of Anna Sui is organized by the Fashion and Textile Museum, London and is curated by Dennis Nothdruft. Since her first catwalk show in 1991, Anna Sui has become known for creating fabulously original clothing inspired by intensive research into vintage fashion and popular culture. The exhibition ranges from early looks such as the exuberant Carnaby Street schoolgirl outfits worn by supermodels Linda Evangelista and Naomi Campbell in Sui’s first runway show in 1991, to the cowgirl and cheerleader modeled

by Gigi and Bella Hadid in her Spring/Summer 2017 Americana-themed collection. Born in the suburbs of Detroit, Sui joined New York’s cultural underground at an intensely creative time in the 1970s, forming important relationships in the worlds of fashion, photography, art, music, and design. The exhibition looks at Sui’s artistic journey through her creative process, collections, interiors, and collaborations. Thematically arranged, the exhibition explores Sui’s lifelong engagement with an array of ‘archetypes’ including the rock star, the schoolgirl, the punk, nomads, and surfers — motifs that are featured throughout her work. From fairy tales and fables to Victoriana, Sui researches her current cultural obsessions in minute detail to create a different story with each collection. OutClique.com | 11

Hallmark outfits include Sui’s “Silver Peruvian Ensemble” and iconic sequined silk organza “Babydoll Dress” from Spring 1994. Featured looks will be displayed in context with the original backdrops used in Sui’s arresting fashion shows. Items on view will also include fashions worn by Sui’s personal style icons who include Anita Pallenberg and Jane Holzer. Ticket Information Advance timed tickets are required for this exhibition. Tickets can be reserved at www. NSUArtMuseum.org or by calling (954) 5255500. Tickets are limited for each time slot in order to maintain reduced building capacity and comply with COVID-19 social distancing guidelines. More About Anna Sui and the Exhibition Anna Sui is known for the richness of her printed textiles, combining a complex layering and mixing of patterns, texture, and colors. The show highlights Sui’s own distinctively graphic textiles as well as those created with high-profile Anna Sui Portrait by Joshua Jordan

partners such as Ascher Studio, Zandra Rhodes, Jeffrey Fulvimari, and Barbara Hulanicki. In addition, the exhibition explores her design processes through mood boards, photographs, sketches, runway shots, and cultural ephemera. A section on collaborations documents her longterm creative partnerships with models such as Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, and Naomi Campbell, as well as with make-up artists Pat McGrath and Francois Nars, jeweler Erickson Beamon, knitwear designer and milliner James Coviello, and hairstylist Garren. The influence of music is seen throughout the exhibition, from Sui’s continuing love of Bohemian chic to her seminal 1993 grunge collections.

The range of different styles on display emphasize Anna Sui’s consistent design approach as she incorporates her current passions into every garment. As it celebrates American fashion, the exhibition also provides a fascinating guide to the history of American pop culture, and an inside look into the creative process and unique world view of this iconic designer whose daring and experimental approach to design has become a mainstay of the international fashion scene. “Originally displayed at the Fashion and Textile

Museum, London in 2017, The World of Anna Sui continues to highlight a fresh and engaging cultural perspective. The exhibition showcases a fashion designer who is not only highly creative and entrepreneurial, but also playful and positive,” said Dennis Nothdruft. “I’m delighted that as the exhibition continues to tour internationally, the joyous and influential work of Anna Sui will be celebrated among ever-greater audiences. After successful runs in Shanghai, Tokyo, and New York, I’m very much looking forward to another exciting incarnation of The World of Anna Sui at NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale.” “NSU Art Museum’s exhibitions explore the full range of visual culture as expressions of contemporary life,” notes Bonnie Clearwater, NSU Art Museum Director and Chief Curator. “Anna Sui shares with other artists of her generation a renewed interest in storytelling and an exploration of societal archetypes. Throughout her career Sui has inventively blended global art history, music, and popular culture for each new collection. Her designs are inspired by extraordinary and creative women and her embrace of collaborations across disciplines keeps her at the forefront of fashion, art, and design. We are delighted to present this compelling exhibition.”

Anna Sui said, “I am delighted to partner with NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale, and to be able to once again see The World of Anna Sui exhibition come to life starting this February [2021]. I can’t wait to share all my treasured designs, collections, inspirations, and more from shows past. See you soon, Fort Lauderdale!” Pop-Up Store and Online Store The World of Anna Sui Pop-Up Store at NSU Art Museum will feature a selection of ready-towear, accessories, and beauty products along with the hardcover book, The World of Anna Sui. Ghosts, Gravestones, and Gasps - Oh My! A Spooky and Historical Tour of Old Town Key West By Steven O. Evans, PhD and Dalton Vilhena

Y

ou may already know Key West, FL for its snorkeling, sailing, and dining. OutClique magazine was able to uncover the dark, underground, and scary side of Key West. Yes, travelers, there is more there than just Duvall Street and Old Town Key West. We saw first hand the sordid and eerie backdrop that so many miss. Be ready for the hauntings, the tragic deaths, and ghastly residents that still walk the halls of centuries old wooden buildings. Beware! You may become the doomed!

16 | OutClique.com

How did we mere mortals unearth these ghastly stories from beyond the grave? How did we find the legends of Robert the Doll that still spooks Fort East Martello, the haunting of the Marrero Guesthouse by Enriquetta, or the mysterious body found one cold-chilly night at the Key West Shipwreck? We took a step of sheer bravery and boarded the Ghosts and Gravestones haunted trolley. As it took us through the backstage history of Key West, we saw and heard the stories of the disembodied voices.

Feeling Lucky By Eric Noel Roman

T

he wind is so calming, cooling, and refreshing. I feel it flowing through my four leaves and brushing against my skinny stem. I could not ask for more; I have a wonderful life. Now, I might be small in stature, but I also am pretty darn resilient. I get stepped on, overlooked, and I tend to get my food on my own. I am glad most of my nutrients come from the sun. I am one happy clover. I have everything I could ever ask for. First, the rain is abundant and I can drink all I like. My neighbors in this garden like to share their resources. For the most part, I am able to soak up the sun everyday. When it is cloudy I still enjoy some rays, if not it is raining. To be honest rain is awesome. It washes away the soil of impurities and keeps my stems full and sturdy. I sprouted in the perfect place. I am one lucky lifeform. In my lifetime, I have had many neighbors like me sprout and become friends of mine. Sometimes, these enormous beings come around and pluck my friends. These same giants are the ones that step on me and seem to ignore me. These giants uproot us and stick us in a dark place, away from the sun and air. I

hear them always say to each other how lucky they are to have found us, that we bring them good fortune. I question this ability. How can I bring luck to anyone or anything? I am just a four-leaf clover. I am a small green plant. I prefer to say that individuals create their own good fortune by surrounding themselves with people and situations that create fulfilling emotion. Luck is a feeling when goals are accomplished. Sometimes the work is easy and feels lucky, other times that same luck requires hard work and the person ends up saying, “I’m lucky to have accomplished this.” As a person grows, that individual learns skills and lessons that allow them to guide to a path of success or failure. In failure, there is a lesson and a new skill is tested and reworked, until perfected. As the skills improve so does the ability to use the skill for gainful growth. With these gains come the feeling of accomplishment and reward. These are the rewards we deem as lucky. If a person is willing to put in the work, then the rewards will be seen. There is no luck involved. Only drive.

Stephen R. Lang SRL Media, Inc.

Written and photographed by Andy Armano | www.AndyArmano.com Cover Photo by Andy Armano 42 | OutClique.com

A

fixture at LGBTQ+ community events, fundraisers, clubs, restaurants, and shops, Stephen R. Lang has documented 16 years of life in South Florida through his photography. His seemingly endless energy propels him forward as he has made a name for himself as a leader in event photography. Recently, he has weathered the COVID-19 pandemic and emerged stronger, more skilled, and ready to continue his legacy. Andy Armano: photography?

How

did

you

get

into

Stephen R. Lang: It was a step by step process. I had a roommate (Misty Eyez) who was a drag queen at the time (now identifying as trans). She wanted me to take pictures of her before she went out. I started going out with her, so I used her camera taking pictures of her with her friends. My friend introduced me to Mark Haines who had noticed my photography. He had a gay website called Mark’s List. One day he asked me, “Hey, do you want to work for me?” That’s how it all happened about 16 years ago. At the time, Mark’s List was the number one gay and lesbian entertainment website, and I ended up doing much more than photography for the business. Unfortunately, the owner passed in 2014 while on The SMART Ride. Mark’s nephew merged Mark’s List into another publication. I worked for them for a while, but soon started my own company, SRL Media, Inc. It’s amazing to go from being an employee to being a business owner, seeing the power shift and change.

AA SRL

How has being in business for yourself impacted your life?

Oh, it’s amazing. I went from low self-esteem, to a better selfesteem; it’s still not great. I’m still working

on that. I get to bring my own dreams to my company. My company model is to help other people and businesses grow. I love doing headshots to help people in their careers, show people a different outlook on their lives, and give someone a perspective they might not have seen before.

AA

Tell me about your involvement with the gay community. I mean, you’re out and about all the time.

SRL

I have amazing relationships with pretty much every nonprofit in the area, big and small. I have a great history with the AIDS Walk, Broward House, and The Pride Center at Equality Park, for example. I know so many good people from my involvement with their events.

AA SRL AA

What is something about you many people don’t realize? I love doing weddings.

It takes a special set of skills and a lot of guts! I could never do it. You can’t reshoot a wedding.

SRL

I did my research, so I understood what was needed from a wedding photographer, and I had all the on-the-job training I would ever need. So it was natural for me. Weddings can keep me occupied for hours. There is so much to photograph, the cake alone! I will take 300 pictures of just it. Different angles, different lighting. Then there is the bride and the family. I take a lot of pride in my work so I am not afraid to take charge. I will happily move your grandmother and put her into the right position so I get the shot I need. And, I’m going to make sure that everything looks amazing.

OutClique.com | 43

44 | OutClique.com

AA SRL

It must be really gratifying to give those memories to people.

Yes, when someone comments back on my photographs and says, “Oh, my God, you got that. That is amazing. Thank you,” it means I have done a good job. Some people down-grade event photographers or wedding photographers, saying something like, “Well, my nephew could do it on his phone.” And I say, “No he couldn’t. He can’t go out for hours and get a whole event’s worth of great shots.”

AA SRL

Do you sometimes feel a conflict between being on the job when everyone around you is socializing?

Yes, I try really hard to be a nice guy, even though I have a reputation sometimes being somewhat difficult [laughs], but people don’t understand when I am out, I am working. I am counting shots, thinking about what my clients need, figuring out technical parts of photography, paying attention to time or cues so that I am in position. It’s a lot. I don’t always have the time to socialize. It’s not personal to anyone else.

AA SRL

What are some of your challenges you’ve overcome over the years?

At the start, I wasn’t really a fan of doing club and event photography. I was shy. And some people aren’t always the nicest to you. But, I learned not to let that bother me. I learned to love it and make it work for me.

AA SRL

That’s surprising to hear that you didn’t like it at first, but discovered your talent for it.

Another thing is that I choke up so hard and fast. I have a really hard time overthinking things. I know this sounds so cheesy, but I did The Secret, which I really needed to do at the time. I still believe certain things. I’m a complete believer in The Universe and the power of positive thinking. It doesn’t happen overnight, and you have to put in the work, but I have seen so much come to pass that I am grateful for.

AA

When the pandemic hit events suddenly ceased to exist. That must have been very hard. How did you handle

that?

OutClique.com | 45

46 | OutClique.com

SRL

At first I was just looking at a wall for an hour and then laughing about the fact that I was looking at a wall for an hour. Then Iaughed for realizing that I’d been laughing for half an hour about the fact that I’d been looking at a wall for an hour. Eventually, I got out of the fog and learned new skills from YouTube videos and taking tutorials. Things are just starting to pick up again and I am back working for my clients.

AA

This brings me to the point that you are really a cultural documenter, a photographic ethnographer. You preserve memories. As time passes, these shots carry more meaning and value. People take them for granted in the present, but a decade or further down the road they have unexpected value.

SRL

Like this past year in 2020, in March, I did Winter Party, and that was the last major event that I did. Basically, I documented the last major event before the pandemic shut things down.

AA

Have you ever shot a photograph that ended up having very special value to you or others?

SRL

On more than one occasion, I have taken the last picture of someone who suddenly passed away. Sometimes, that photo was used at a memorial or online and that means a lot to me, that I could have provided that as a way to comfort people in their time of loss. I usually get genuine smiles from people and now they have a lasting memory.

Support Social Impact Businesses: BBB4Good By Rod Davis

E

CEO of BBB serving Southeast Florida and the Caribbean

ach of us knows a business in our community that has contributed to local programs, developed initiatives in response to disasters to people or neighborhoods, and made a positive impact on the lives of their customers. Research is finding that all consumers, and especially those in the Generation Z or Millennial age groups, want to find and support socially conscious businesses. According to Cone, 89% of consumers are likely to switch brands to one that is associated with a good cause, given similar price and quality. In response to this new socially conscious capitalism movement, organizations and businesses are reshaping economies and reinvigorating communities. By choosing a higher purpose, businesses can make significant social and/or environmental impacts in their communities. For more than 100 years, the Better Business Bureau (BBB) has been recognizing businesses that demonstrate

integrity and performance and promote the value of their products and services truthfully. As an example, when a business makes a claim to deliver the lowest price or the fastest service, BBB requires documentation from a reputable study to substantiate advertised superiority claims. If a business is not able to document a claim, they must either remove the claim or their BBB report will be marked to indicate the advertising is not substantiated and consumers can take that information into account before making a purchase. This incentive to be honest and substantiate claims with valid data/studies is effective since consumers in southeast Florida checked 20,000 BBB reports on local businesses each day in 2020. Since the new social impact oriented businesses are making claims about their purpose driven goals, the industry and consumers will benefit from a system that validates claims and helps consumers find and support businesses OutClique.com | 51

aligned with causes important to the individual consumer. To address this growing new sector of the marketplace, BBB Institute partnered with local BBBs to launch the BBB4Good initiative to support and elevate purpose-driven businesses. BBB4Good works to: •

Empower consumers to identify purposedriven businesses that substantiate their social impact claims,

Spotlight, recognize, and support organizations that integrate social impact into their business plans, and

Expand the growth of this powerful new marketplace sector via new research and partnerships with like-minded organizations that are providing critical support to purpose-driven businesses.

How will BBB4Good work? Businesses or organizations with a social impact goal will be able to engage BBB4Good to review and validate the claims so that consumers will not be

led by false claims to support a business failing to deliver on its social impact commitment. This program will be phased in over the coming months, but we already have an example of a local business with a social impact cause. 4Ocean is a local business with an environmental goal to clean our oceans and waterways. Since 4Ocean’s initial goal was to pull a pound of trash from our oceans and waterways for every bracelet sold, BBB met with the 4Ocean staff to receive information about their business and develop a way to monitor compliance with the advertised social impact goal integrated into their commitment to customers. BBB put into place a system to receive data about the number of bracelets sold and reports from the weigh stations used by 4Ocean to collect data on the poundage pulled from waterways. BBB was able to validate the claim with objective data and continues to monitor claims so that consumers supporting 4Ocean can have confidence their dollars are being used to support the claim used to solicit their business/support.

BBB4Good will be integrated into the www.BBB.org/SEFL website in the months ahead. To learn more about BBB4Good, whether you are a consumer or social impact business/organization, visit www.BBBMarketplaceTrust.org/Story/42427725/BBB4Good-Prototype. Businesses have always played a key role in our local communities and BBB4Good will provide a spotlight on our local businesses making a clear and documented impact. OutClique.com | 53

Care Resource Observed National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day 2021 We’re in This Together

N

ational Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NBHAAD) is observed annually on February 7 to increase awareness and showcase the work being done to reduce HIV in Black and African American communities in the United States. This year’s theme was “We’re in this Together” which speaks to the importance of raising awareness and showing support for the community, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. We can connect virtually to remain engaged and focused on our collective goal: ending the HIV epidemic on a regional, national, and global scale. The first step is to have the necessary conversations to end stigma. Studies show that stigma, discrimination, and homophobia can prevent many Black and African Americans from seeking routine HIV testing or receiving HIV preventative care and treatments due to fear of judgment from family and peers. Care Resource creates a safe space for individuals to receive essential information about biomedical HIV prevention options through PrEP and PEP hotlines. In addition, the health center’s digital series, “The Health Connection,” enables the community to receive essential information from healthcare professionals. The latest episode, in observance of NBHAAD, featured Melvin Fort, Access & Retention Supervisor for Project Dare at Care Resource, and Lorenzo Robertson, Executive Director at Ujima Men’s

Collective. Guests discussed stigma around HIV/AIDS, health disparities in communities of color, and more. Be sure to watch the episode at www.YouTube.com/CareResource. The need for affordable HIV testing within South Florida remains essential. According to a 2018 study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the South accounts for both the majority of Blacks newly diagnosed with HIV (63% in 2018) and the majority living with an HIV diagnosis at the end of 2017 (58%). At the end of 2017, Florida topped the list of 10 states with the highest number of Blacks living with an HIV diagnosis, with a total of 49,943. Care Resource introduced an at-home HIV testing program to address the needs of communities within South Florida. Access to HIV testing is healthcare. Individuals living in Broward and Miami-Dade counties can receive a no-cost HIV test to take in the privacy of their home. In case of a reactive result, they can receive support from behavioral health and medical providers, as well as linkage to HIV care.

In the spirit of NBHAAD, get tested and encourage a partner, friend, or loved one to get tested, too. This year, we’ve learned that individual health builds the community’s health. Let’s continue to build healthy, strong, and resilient communities. PrEP hotline: (347) 919-8904 PEP hotline: (786) 322-1503

Abercrombie & Fitch Co. Achieves Perfect Score for 15th Consecutive Year on the HRC’s 2021 Corporate Equality Index Global retailer is once again designated as a best place to work for LGBTQ+ equality

A

bercrombie & Fitch Co. (A&F), a leading, global specialty retailer of apparel and accessories, announced it has received a perfect score on the Human Rights Campaign’s (HRC) 2021 Corporate Equality Index (CEI) for the 15th year in a row. The CEI is the nation’s premier benchmarking survey and report measuring corporate policies and practices related to LGBTQ+ workplace equality. The CEI evaluates LGBTQ+-related policies and practices, including non-discrimination policies, employee benefits, demonstrated organizational competency, and accountability around LGBTQ+ diversity and inclusion, public commitment to LGBTQ+ equality, and responsible citizenship. A&F’s efforts in satisfying all of the CEI’s criteria resulted in another 100% score, as well as the designation as a Best Place to Work for LGBTQ+ Equality. “From the previously unimaginable impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, to a long overdue reckoning with racial injustice, 2020 was an unprecedented year. Yet, many businesses across the nation stepped up and continued to prioritize and champion LGBTQ+ equality,” said Alphonso David, HRC President. “This year has shown us that tools like the CEI are crucial in the work to increase equity and inclusion in the workplace, but also that companies must breathe life into these policies and practices in real and tangible ways. Thank you to the companies that understand protecting their LGBTQ+ employees and consumers from discrimination is not just the right thing to do, but the best business decision.”

As the leading social service agency serving South Florida’s LGBTQ+ community, SunServe announced the non-profit plans to enhance programs and strengthen relationships both with supporters and those it serves in 2021. Helping between 2,500 and 5,000 community members each week, SunServe has differentiated itself from other LGBTQ+ nonprofit organizations in Broward County by the level and scope of comprehensive services and programs it provides. Its mission is to provide critical life assistance and professional mental health services with an emphasis on economically disadvantaged, marginalized youth, adults, and seniors in the greater South Florida area. The newly formed executive leadership team consists of Director of Development Terry Dyer, Executive Director of Operations Gary Hensley, and Chief Human Resources Officer James Hipps. The triumvirate will lead the organization toward a comprehensive, unified retooling and path towards continued growth. Their action plan includes strategies and tactics to better connect with donors and community partners, as well as team building, refreshing workspaces, and rebranding. Live A Better You & Make 2021 Your Year By Steven O. Evans, PhD

A

fter a year of the effects of a pandemic and quarantine, it’s time for a fresh mental and physical tune up. We were not meant for a sedentary life, but rather one of energy and positive outlooks. No matter what the last 12 months have been like, don’t wait for change. It may be time for adjustments in your life, behaviors, attitudes, or relationships. It’s to not necessarily change you, but to become a better version of yourself. For me, I began a journey with Genesis Health

78 | OutClique.com

Institute, located in the heart of Wilton Manors, FL. I started with a fasting lab panel. Dr. Cabrera sat down with me and took an indepth look at each item and came up with a plan for a better and healthier lifestyle. Once you meet with him, you’ll quickly discover his passion for helping patients treat symptoms of aging. To assist patients with age management, Dr. Cabrera utilizes functional medicine to optimize functioning of various systems of the body. As we age, our bodies don’t work as well

as they did when we were youthful. We talked about a better diet and plan for creating the necessary meals and the nutrition a healthy body needs. Of course, exercise is also on my to do list. Movement is necessary to keep us functional.

Another important element is testosterone therapy. As we age, our bodies do not always produce enough to keep us at our optimum levels. Dr. Cabrera and the staff at Genesis Health Institute can guide you on this option, should it be necessary for you.

Let’s start with more energy. That was number one on my list. Dr. Cabrera is working with me on the necessary supplements to not only increase energy, but also to improve blood quality, maintain my correct sugar levels, and increase lean muscle mass.

Their friendly and helpful staff will guide you on your path to a healthier life. Don’t just wait for change, make a commitment in 2021 to take advantage of the knowledge and experience at Genesis Health Institute. Join me, as I take this journey.

Trust Him Before You Don’t On & Dave Mekahel Cederberg

T

rust is complex and fickle. Trust is like the personal assistant to love. It’s necessary for any relationship, carrying love along, but it doesn’t quite come with all the glory and feel good accolades that love receives. No matter who you are, trust is definitely an issue worth exploring in your life. If you can hash out and understand where you fall in relation to it (i.e., how do you live it), trust can be something that you navigate in a safe and productive way. Once you have trust figured out for yourself - the next most important place that you will need to instill it - your partner and your relationship. In some cases trust is earned, but that is usually pertaining to an individual or institution that loses it within an existing relationship; or if they have been previously labeled untrustworthy. In your romantic relationship, however, this approach is toxic if your partner has never done anything to violate trust. Testing your partner in order to see if they are worthy of your trust is bonkers. And it probably means the relationship is doomed. If you don’t trust your partner, then you never really trusted yourself to pick them in the first place. Crap flows downhill. To the opposite effect, instilling full blown trust in one another from day

one, no questions asked, is where the bountiful harvest lies. This concept is something to keep on simmer in your mind, as it will be necessary to re-visit from time to time as life presents its imminent challenges, and you or your partner are faced with situations where trust might be challenged, or even come into question. When those instances pop up, in order to arrive at the healthiest emotional juncture for yourself and your relationship, implementing trust just because you trust your partner is a totally valid rationale. Getting to this place is like holding the black AmEx card of trust. It knows few limits. The bond of two people engaging in wholehearted trust between each other will only grow the love between them, strengthening the relationship, helping to clear the pathway toward forever. Trust holds every relationship intact. Some feel that it is earned, while others give it willingly. No matter the approach, the end result is the same - someone (or thing) is trustworthy, until they’re not. The best way to conquer trust and use it to your advantage is to give it without condition and in good faith. After all, the world is much more palatable when we assume the best in each other, even if sometimes it has the potential to hurt a little. OutClique.com | 85

was invited to judge the Sawmill Leather Sir and Boy competition in January 2021. The pandemic canceled most leather title competitions in 2020. Sawmill Campground decided to hold their competition, with their added advantage, to host outdoor activities for social distancing. The sprawling property features four bars, a pool, lake, nature walk, outdoor pavilion with stage, and a general store. It is an LGBTQ+ community and a melting pot of amazing people from around the country. Our group that attended from Wilton Manors, FL enjoyed ourselves and our great hosts. Richard Raske and Blake Sie (a married couple, the event producers, and our hosts), asked me to be a judge. This was my first visit to Sawmill and I was excited to be judging. The event was a phenomenally produced weekend of social events, poolside afternoons, and evening competitions. My title has awarded me a platform for my causes and also the opportunity to meet amazing people along the way. Finding out Rick was a Chicago leatherman and proud Midwest guy like myself was amazing. We found ourselves talking about the Eagle, Gold Coast, Man’s Country, and many more. Rick mentioned my article about leather history and how it raised memories of his coming out in Chicago in 1977, his first leather bar, Gold Coast, and the times that followed. Nervous with adrenaline, he walked in not knowing what to expect. Gold Coast (owned by Chuck Renslow, Founder of IML) had the reputation of being cruisey, exciting, and filled with hot leathermen. His other place to hang was Redoubt, another venture by the owner of the famous Baton Show Lounge, world famous for its female impersonators since 1969. Rick’s first big event was in color guard for the Pride Parade 1978, which ended up showing him on the local news. “‘Hi, Mom; hi, Dad.’ That’s my coming out story,” said Rick as he chuckled. I had to tell him, “That was quicker than mine. I

had to let it build up for years!” While he told his experiences, I noticed many smiles, eyes sparkling, and yes, tears for one too many lost. I could feel his love and the strong bond he felt for our community. Shortly into his stories of love and community there was a pandemic. It hit our community like no other. I asked him, “How do you recover that everlasting bond of love and then unspeakable loss?” Rick replied, “With LOVE, right where we started; love.” Rick’s sparkle continues on for Blake and their 18 amazing years together. He’s right. Look at today. What heals, what feels, what do we all need to get through and begin again? Love. Once again, I’m blessed by the people and places this title awards me to meet. I hear stories from the ones that came before me. And, I am able to share with those that will come after.

She’s Still the One That We Want an interview with Olivia Newton-John

N

By Gregg Shapiro

ow in her seventh decade as an entertainer, Olivia Newton-John has proven herself to be a versatile artist.

100 | OutClique.com

First, of course, as a five-time Grammy Awardwinning singer. Then as an actor in the wildly successful movie adaptation of the musical

Gregg Shapiro: Olivia, I’d like to begin by congratulating you on the success of “Window in the Wall,” your duet with your daughter Chloe Lattanzi which hit #1 on its release date (January 22, 2021) on the iTunes Pop music video chart. What does such an accomplishment mean to you? Olivia Newton-John: I’m just thrilled that the song resonated, because I had no plans to record and I didn’t go out of my way to look for a song to record. This song came to me and it had purpose. This lovely woman who I’d met at a health clinic a few years ago and whom I didn’t know very well, wrote to me and said, “I had this calling and I know that you should record this song. My cousin wrote it …” And, of course, when

you hear that my ears went uh-oh! This is family, so how good can it be? The song came on and it was beautiful. It made me cry and it touched something in me. I just had this knowing that I had to record it. That’s what I did! The first person I thought of was Chloe because it was so personal.

GS ONJ

Are there more duets with Chloe in the works?

Could be! We’re talking about something. It’s still in the talking phase, but, yeah, we have a fun idea. Nothing I can tell you yet though [big laugh].

GS

You have a history of duets, including “You’re the One That I Want” and “Summer Nights” from Grease sung with John Travolta and “Suddenly” from Xanadu sung with Cliff Richard. What do you enjoy most about the process of singing a duet?

ONJ

I love harmonizing. I’ve always done that, according to my parents, since I was a little girl. I would always sing harmonies to songs I heard. It was just lucky for me that I was able to do that. I love to do that. I enjoy that and I enjoy bouncing off somebody else, rather than just being the only person there. It’s fun to exchange energy when you’re singing. I’ve had some wonderful singing

Grease, as well as the camp classic Xanadu (directed by Gene Kelly). She also displayed her serious acting side AIDS drama It’s My Party, which re-teamed her with Grease director Randal Kleiser. Olivia also made her mark as a writer with her 2018 memoir Don’t Stop Believing, newly available in a paperback edition. More recently, Olivia returned to her first love of singing, teaming up with her daughter Chloe Lattanzi (from her first marriage to actor Matt Lattanzi) for the best selling single “Window in the Wall.” Olivia was kind enough to take time out of her busy schedule to answer a few questions.

partners. I learned so much from Cliff (Richard) because he had me on his show. Then I was a double act with Pat Carroll for many years: Pat and Olivia. I’ve always loved that part of performing, and you get a chance to work with all these amazing people.

GS

“Window in the Wall” was cowritten by a trio of Nashville-area songwriters (Tom Paden, Eddie Kilgallon, and Tajci Cameron) which reminded me that your earliest career hit singles were contemporary country tunes, including “Let Me Be There,” for which you received the 1973 Best Female Country Vocal Performance Grammy. Can you please say something about your attraction to that style of music?

ONJ

It’s really interesting because I never thought of myself as a country artist. My manager at the time, Peter Gormley, had managed Frank Ifield, who was a country star, an Aussie guy. He thought my voice really suited that kind of music. I thought of myself as a big balladeer [big laugh]. But really, I started out singing folk music. That was my entrance into singing. Singing folk music, Joan Baez and those songs. They brought those (country) songs to me. I wasn’t even sure I liked “If Not For You.” Of course, I’ve learned to love it. It’s my husband’s favorite song. Isn’t that amazing! Initially, it was really the idea of my producers, that style for me.

strong gay following and I’m very grateful for that because I feel they’re very loyal fans and very sweet. I’ve always enjoyed the company of gay people. I think they’re so much fun. One of my best friends, Gregg Cave, who runs Gaia (Resort and Spa) is gay and he was my mother’s friend also. It’s just natural to me. They’re funny people; I don’t know why that’s so [laughs]. I like that. I like to be able to laugh a lot.

GS

Your 2018 memoir Don’t Stop Believing was just released in a paperback edition with a new foreword. Why was this the right time to tell your story?

ONJ

The truth is that they were going to make a movie about my life in Australia. I didn’t really know how accurate it was going to be. I thought I better write my version because I don’t know what they’re going to say. It turns out that they did quite a nice job. Delta Goodrum did a wonderful job of playing me, I thought. That’s really what spurred it to be. Then I thought, “This is quite interesting!” It’s made me remember a lot of things I hadn’t thought about and a lot of things since then, too. That was really the instigation. It wasn’t the perfect time or the right time, it was just that I wanted to write it so that the record was straight [laughs].

GS

ONJ GS

[Laughs]

Both Grease and Xanadu are musicals with strong queer appeal, and It’s My Party and Sordid Lives, are more directly gay films. Do you remember when you first became aware of having a gay following and what does that LGBTQ+ following mean to you?

ONJ

I just think of gay people as people [laughs]. I have had a wonderfully

‘DISCO’ is the 15th studio album from the pop icon, and the first new music since her number one album ‘Golden’, released in 2018. It features lead single ‘Say Something’ which received global critical acclaim - deemed ‘sparkling’ by NME and ‘an introspective dance track with lyrics that feel pertinent for our quarantine days’ by Rolling Stone. Other tracks included on the album are ‘Magic’ and ‘I Love It’. For ‘DISCO’, Kylie worked with collaborators Skylar Adams (with whom she worked with on Golden), Teemu Brunila (David Guetta, Jason Derulo), Maegan Cottone (Iggy Azalea, Demi Lovato), plus regular collaborator Biff Stannard, alongside others. Argentina Pioneers COVID-HIV Testing Combo

“Active Search,” a locally adapted provincial and municipal version of the national “Detect-AR” plan, was designed to lower the coronavirus contagion curve and limit congestion in hospitals. The actions resulted in testing 324 people for COVID-19, along with 217 for HIV. “This campaign was vital, both to slow the spread of COVID-19 and to restart HIV testing after months of lockdowns,” said AHF Argentina

Country Program Manager Dr. Miguel Pedrola. “Many of the people we contacted wanted to be tested for HIV but didn’t know how to proceed, as they didn’t typically visit clinics. Of those found to be HIV positive, it was their first time accessing testing, and they were immediately linked to treatment.” At the request of the provincial government, AHF will also provide counseling on effective testing practices as the initiative is expanded to other areas. In addition to testing, all COVID-19-related medical materials, including personal protective equipment (PPE) for all staff, was provided by the government. The HIV tests were supplied by AHF, which has been working in Argentina since 2013 and currently provides HIV care and treatment to 20,402 registered clients.

HF Argentina recently joined its government and NGO (nongovernmental organization) partners for an innovative initiative to reach community members with COVID-19 and HIV testing – operation “Active Search.” The effort spanned two weeks and reached more than 4,500 families throughout 12 neighborhoods in Venado Tuerto, a city in Santa Fe province.

The SMART Ride Re-Imagined Raises over $700,000

T

he SMART Ride 17 happened and it looked different, according to founder Glen Weinzimer. “We had to reimagine everything; the need to provide the agencies we benefit and ultimately the individuals needing services remained great. NOT doing an event was out of the question.” Traditionally, The SMART Ride (Southern Most AIDS/HIV Ride) is a two-day, 165 miles bicycle ride from the University of Miami to Key West. In a normal year we would have seen over 250 individuals supporting the efforts of the over 500 cyclists as they travel south to Key West. In 2019, this event, which guarantees that 100% of the funds raised by its participants goes to the benefiting agencies, raised over $1.4 million. This year, with the help of riders and volunteers, the ride was reimagined and individuals were encouraged to ride in their own backyards, to do their metric of 1-6-5 in whatever form that took. “We had participants fly in from California and ride their usual 165 miles, as well some participants chose to do stationary biking because of COVID-19, and others spent the weekend cleaning the beach for 165 minutes. They even had one person paddle board for 16.5 miles over the weekend,” added Weinzimer. The SMART Ride is the largest HIV/AIDS ride in the eastern United States and second largest in the country.

108 | OutClique.com

Aiming to raise $500,000 in 2020 due to the economic impact of COVID-19, the event exceeded its goal by raising over $700,000 to support six HIV/AIDS organizations throughout Florida. The SMART Ride has now given back over $12 million dollars to support programs and services for people living with or affected by HIV/AIDS throughout its 17-year history. The SMART Ride is the only HIV/AIDS ride in the country that gives back 100% of all the funds raised. On Sunday, January 17, 2021, the event organizers hosted a virtual Check Presentation Ceremony. Instead of the usual 300 people that attend this festive event there were only 14 people and everyone was super vigilant about safety. All donning their masks, keeping social distance, and broadcasting through social media the amounts raised and distributed. The SMART Ride 18 will take place on November 18–20, 2021, and organizers believe that the vaccine distribution will allow for a safe inperson ride. “We anticipate selling out early this year because of the unprecedented demand,” Weinzimer said. “We believe this will be a record breaking year.” The ride is so important to so many in our communities throughout Florida where we currently have the highest rate of new HIV infection in the United States.

I’m sure you understand that we could all use a little more time to prepare. We are working very hard to make a safe and fun event, and we hope you can join us. We’re looking forward to seeing you on April 24, 2021, for a fantastic Saturday in Fort Lauderdale, FL! We wanted to remind you that your participation and fundraising would help these organizations provide lifesaving medication and services to people in need right here in South Florida. So, we need you to join us and support them more than ever. No matter when the Florida AIDS Walk takes place and what form our gathering takes, these amazing organizations still benefit from your participation and depend on your fundraising. If you’re on a team representing one of our official beneficiaries, 100% of your fundraising dollars goes directly to benefit your organization. So, if you are affiliated with a beneficiary and you’d like to support directly, join their team. Learn the Facts An estimated 1.1 million people in the US are living with HIV, and 15% of them don’t even know it. Light the Night to “Light Up” Fort Lauderdale’s Downtown On Display March 1-7, 2021, 6:30-11:00PM Get ready for Light the Night, when buildings in downtown Fort Lauderdale, FL will come alive with spectacular video projection displays. A collaboration of Broward Cultural Division’s Public Art & Design Program and the creative solutions firm MAD, Light the Night is the first event of its kind in Broward County, incorporating innovative 3D projection mapping technology to project new sitespecific artworks by South Florida artists onto three buildings in downtown Fort Lauderdale. Featuring artworks by Agustina Woodgate, Jen Clay, Edison Peñafiel, and Monica Lopez de Victoria, Light the Night’s nightly activations of light, color, sound and motion, some spanning 10 stories high, will be displayed March 1-7, 2021, from 6:30-11:00PM on the facades of Broward County Government Center (115 South Andrews Avenue), NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale (One East Las Olas Boulevard), and Society Las Olas (301 Southwest 1st Avenue). The buildings are located within walking distance of each other, providing a unique outdoor art experience for the public in a low-density and safe environment. Health and safety reminders will also be projected onto the buildings. The nighttime projections will also feature video art from the collections of NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale and the Francie Bishop Good and David Horvitz Collection at Girls’ Club. Rather than using a conventional screen, projection mapping, also known as video mapping, uses a physical space or object as a surface for the projection. The pieces produced are adapted to each space, and are then mapped to its surfaces, giving the projection architectural dimensionality that transforms flat surfaces into dynamic art filled with moving patterns, lights, and animations.

The South Florida Symphony Orchestra Education Program By Denny Patterson

W

hen Maestra Sebrina Alfonso founded the South Florida Symphony Orchestra (SFSO) in 1997, a cornerstone of the organization’s mission was dedicated to arts education. The Symphony in the Schools Program was created, which includes thoughtfully curated, compelling, and fun classical music programs, specifically to engage children who most likely have not been exposed to the artform in the past. Recently, the SFSO was invited to collaborate with Carnegie Hall and its Link Up Program, providing a free, high quality, year-long curriculum that teachers can easily implement. The resources have been digitally enhanced and made available for both in-person and remote teaching settings. SFSO President and CEO Jacqueline Lorber talked more with OutClique about the education program. Denny Patterson: Hi, Jacqueline! Thank you for taking some time to chat with me about the SFSO Education Program. Can you tell us more about it? Jacqueline Lorber: Since the inception of our transformative program, we have reached more than 85,000 underserved students in Broward, Miami-Dade, and Monroe counties. During the 2019-2020 school year alone, over 10,000 children attended a free Symphony in the Schools multimedia-infused concert. We have strong community partnerships with the school districts in South Florida, The Kennedy Centers’ Turnaround Arts Program, and now Carnegie

Hall’s Link Up Program to serve culturally and economically disadvantaged children who would otherwise have little to no access to orchestra music. In addition to children’s programming, we also perform these programs for the community. On March 14, 2021, there is a free livestream concert of Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf, in partnership with the Rhythm Foundation and City of Miami Beach, as part of the Arts in the Park series. We hope music lovers both young and old will join us for this family friendly virtual concert. The symphonic fairytale of a brave, young boy who captures a big, bad wolf, comes to life through the narrator and the instruments that illustrate it. This is a great introduction to the orchestra for children. Their imaginations come alive when they connect the various instruments of the orchestra and Peter and his animal friends.

DP JL

What do you hope participants take away from this program?

We hope that music enriches their lives. In addition to the benefits mentioned previously, classical music just makes you feel good. Listening to music lowers stress, aids in relaxation, and boosts memory.

DP JL

How will this program benefit the SFSO as a whole?

SFSO’s mission is to entertain, inspire, and educate the communities we serve. Enriching the lives of students is just part of our DNA. We are always thinking creatively and strategically about how we can expand this impactful program and reach more and more children.
