I Just Haven’t Met You . . . Yet! By Steven O. Evans, PhD Hello! First, I want to wish all our moms a very Happy Mother’s Day! We wouldn’t be here without you literally! A special thank you to my mother, who works so hard as my Chief (and only) Copyeditor.

Mom

has read every single word that has been in the magazine since Volume 1, Issue 1. I tell people, “If you don’t want my mom to read it, don’t send it to me.” That paradigm has been a key to our success. So much love and thanks to you, Mom, for all your help. Music has always meant so much to me.

The

Michael Bublé song, “I Just Haven’t Met You Yet” has come up several times lately. It made me stop and think about the possibility of the new friends I might (am?) going to meet this year. That’s an exciting thought! Check out our pages of what to do and what’s to come.

Drag shows, a celebration of the life of

Judy Garland, Stonewall Pride in Wilton Manors, a fun trip to Key West Pride, shows at the Broward and Arsht Centers, or just a relaxing meal and a restaurant. There’s a world of possibilities here in South Florida.

Our Convention and Visitors

Bureau (CVB) also has a list of things to do and places to stay. So, who have you not “yet” met? Maybe he or she is waiting out there. Make it your year. Dr. Steven

Hello, Leather Daddy! Mike Ruiz Talks New Photo Project By Denny Patterson

I

nternational fashion and celebrity photographer Mike Ruiz, who has been featured on America’s and Canada’s Next Top Model, RuPaul’s Drag Race, and several other reality television shows, has turned his lens towards a community that has contributed so much to LGBTQ history. This new portrait series entitled “The Leathermen Mike Ruiz Project,” focuses on the beauty and diversity of the leather community, while also showing that it’s not just about kink and sex. Ruiz posted an open call in October to leathermen of all ages, races, sizes, and backgrounds to appear in these stunning images, and many men volunteered, seeing the importance of sharing their love of leather and what it means to them. During his travels and sessions, Ruiz bonded with these burly men and saw how free and empowered they are, which granted him the power to let go of his own personal hang-ups about sex and relationships. As the series grows and evolves, so will the discussion and understanding of what it means to wear leather as a form of self-identification instead of just a sexual practice. Ruiz took some time to talk more about “The Leatherman Mike Ruiz Project” with OutClique. It will eventually culminate into a book and multiple gallery showings, but above all, Ruiz hopes the project will become a time capsule that will keep the leather community’s rich history and traditions alive for future generations.

always been fascinated and drawn to the aesthetic, but I didn’t know about the history and the contributions the leather communities made to the overall LGBTQ community. From that, I was thinking, I’d love to hear stories and actual accounts of what these guys went through and what their journey was like through the 80s and 90s. What better way to do that than reach out, talk to them, and photograph them? That’s what I did. I made a post on Instagram calling for anyone active in the leather community and saying I’m starting this series of portraits. Reach out to me if you’re interested. I thought I’d get maybe three people, but the floodgates opened, and I received a lot of responses from legit leathermen who have been active in the community for years. This was very educational for me, and I had great conversations with them before I even started photographing. So, that’s what prompted this. It started out as a little self-indulgent self-exploration, but it ended up morphing into me documenting the journey of these men, who have such intense and amazing stories.

DP: Some people believe that the leather community is dying. What are your thoughts on this?

MR: I think it’s changing, but I don’t think it’s dying. It’s too deep and profound to die. It’s like saying because the gay community has integrated into the mainstream, gay culture is going to die out. It’s absurd to say something like that. It’s the same for the leather community.

DP: What is it about leathermen and the community that Denny Patterson: What inspired you to begin this project?

you find so attractive and appealing?

Mike Ruiz: What inspired me to start was my desire to embark on a little self-exploration journey. I was celibate for the entire pandemic, and I was going a little stir crazy (laughs). I’m introspective about a lot of stuff, but I was focusing on my life, how I wanted to move forward, and how I wanted to come out of the pandemic. I’m all about the experience, and I want to have as many heightened experiences as possible. That includes a little fetish and BDSM. I met somebody and he kind of introduced me to that world, and then he started to tell me about the history of the leather community. There was a lot of stuff that I didn’t know about. I started to do some research, and I was just fascinated by it. I’ve

MR: Having come of age in the 80s and feeling the brunt of oppression on the gay community back then, I perceived it necessary to overcompensate by being hyper masculine. A lot of that was Tom of Finland influenced, and that was my point of reference of the aesthetic. Not only was that a point of reference for my development, but it was also a point of reference for what I became attracted to. The uniform, the military aspect, the authority type figures – I was always influenced by that, and it’s manifested throughout my career in various ways from other shoots, but it was always at a distance. I feel with this project, I’m really integrating into the mindset and lifestyle of the community. It’s been very stimulating.

ONYX Deep South

A Casual Chat with the President and Vice President I had the pleasure to meet with my friends the newly elected President and Vice President of Onyx Deep South (ODS), Pusckatt and Blade. We enjoyed a casual evening while they answered some questions I thought could inform my readers, including their vision, events and history. These two leaders serve our community with commitments on the ODS Board, and are title holders as well. Blade, Mr. Ramrod 2019 and Pusckatt, Mr. Florida Rubber 2022. Cory: How would you explain ONYX to someone unaware of your group or understand who you are? Pusckatt: First and foremost, we are a brotherhood. ONYX is a leather fraternity established in Chicago in 1995 for people of color to have a welcoming in the leather community. At times, people of color felt like outsiders who were not welcomed. Today, we are nine chapters strong across the country. Their work for inclusiveness has raised awareness where it may have been overlooked. While the community was fighting for equality, our gay and lesbian people of color still felt separated within our leather community. The Onyx Organization brought people of color together for social leather and fetish events. Over the years, membership grew, new chapters formed and an awareness of the group grew, while educating others why the founding members created this necessary group and always leading with a positive philosophy Cory: How large is ONYX Deep South, members and chapters? Blade: ONYX Deep South currently has 14 full members, 17 associate members and 2 alumni members. Full members require a person to be gay or bisexual man of color, the associate memeber is extended to everyone. We are an all inclusive club, everyone is invited and must be 21 years of age.

Cory: Why the age requirement?

By Cory David, Mr. Eagle WIlton Manors 2020 / 2021

Blade: Due to the adult nature of our leather, fetish and kink, that’s a requirement. Since ONYX addresses many problems that affect gay/bi men of color specifically, voting rights are extended to full members only in order to maintain control of our own destiny. Cory: Now holding these positions, what is your vision? Pusckatt: We will continue to build off the previous board’s footprint to grow membership: we will continue supporting and assisting our local organizations, focusing on shining light on the smaller organization and their work in the community. Upcoming Events Signature Event “Beach Bash“ yearly event, April 2023 due to the Bi-Annual National Event “National ONYX Blackout Party” Gallery One / Doubletree - host hotel, including Yacht Party and Eagle Bar WM October 7th -10th, 2022 ONYX Deep South Social 2nd Saturday of every month 9pm at Eagle Bar Wilton Manors Cory: In closing, what do you want the readers to understand about ONYX Deep South? Blade: If there is a misconception that we are an organization just for people of color, that’s not true. Please understand that we address many issues that specifically affect gay and bisexual men of color, members have voting privileges, so that we may honor and control our destiny respecting the vision the founders had for us still today.

Pusckatt and Blade: We are an all-inclusive organization, that welcomes everyone, regardless of race, sexual orientation, gender indentity, etc. Everyone - come visit us at any of our events. All are welcome.

hen you picture the quintessential leather daddy, you may imagine a big, buff, built man who looks great in leather, commands a room with his presence, and looks fierce in a sash. Basically, you’d be envisioning Mr. Eagle Wilton Manors 2022, Kevin Bubba. But Kevin’s community extends beyond South Florida’s leather community. “I have always been profound(ly) deaf since birth.” Being deaf has always been a part of his life, and he says he’s always been welcomed into the leather scene. “Back in the 1990s, South Florida had a leather bar called The Stud. I entered the bar and realized the leathers socialize, and was very comfortable.” Once Eagle Wilton Manors opened, Kevin told OutClique he felt right at home once again. “When I started working for the Eagle, I started working as a security guard. I realized that disabled and deaf individuals really love this community. It felt very much like family. It seems like it’s growing and getting even bigger. That’s why all of us want to stay together as a family and grow the community.” Being a leader in the leather community while being deaf presents some challenges others never face. “The hearing community has a lack of recognition (in) acceptance and use of sign language in all areas of life. To be a leader, I have to remind the hearing people to speak slowly,

repeat what they said, because they don’t have any education about deaf culture.” But Kevin says there are advantages, too. Immediately being accepted into a new community because you are deaf. Conversation can continue as normal in sign language while across the room, being underwater, through windows, or across train platforms.” The competition to be Mr. Eagle was intense, and consisted of five categories judged by a panel that knows which details sets the top tier above the rest. When Kevin won, he says he was shocked. “They gave me the title and the sash! The competitions included who had the best leather daddy. I honestly did not expect it. I worked hard. All the judges seemed to be impressed with my uniform. It felt like starting a new chapter in my life. Inspired.” During his reign, Kevin will be fundraising for the IML (International Mr. Leather competition) in Chicago. He also plans to teach about deaf culture and sign language at the bar. “The Eagle family seems to be very motivated to learn some signs. I have three coworkers who took a special interest in communicating with me and they are very excited to do so.” He also wants to work with kids, teaching them how to paint with hand signs. But most importantly, he’s living in the now. “I plan to enjoy every minute of it and keep building this amazing family we have.”

Some of Kevin’s comments were translated from ASL by interpreter Victor Blocker.

Starlet Skye, the Eagle’s Favorite Bearded Queen By Denny Patterson

O

riginally from Kent in southeastern England, Starlet Skye moved to the U.S. seven years ago to be with a guy she met. Although the relationship didn’t work out, her love for South Florida remained. Skye quickly made a name for herself within the drag community and is now a resident performer at Eagle Wilton Manors. Always hoping to make audiences smile, she is a showgirl who knows how to have fun and entertain. Plus, who doesn’t love a bearded queen? OutClique caught up with Skye to talk more about her drag and style.

SS: I’m not messy or unpolished, I just have a beard! You can be messy and unpolished without a beard, too. It’s just a form of entertainment. People take drag too seriously. It’s just a job like being a clown.

DP: We can primarily see you perform at Eagle Wilton Manors. What kind of shows do you do?

SS: I host my own show at Eagle on Sunday called Sunday Service, featuring the iconic Erika Norell and Daisy DeadPetals, amongst others. It’s a fun filled adult show where we drink, laugh, and it’s so exciting to do.

Denny Patterson: Can you begin by telling us when and how you discovered your passion for drag?

DP: Eagle is a leather bar. What is it about leathermen

Starlet Skye: My first time in drag was when I was 16 years old. My first boyfriend was a drag queen and he dressed me up for fun. He saw I was pretty good at it, and then we put a double act together.

SS: I’ve always liked leathermen. I can’t describe what it

DP: You are a bearded queen. What made you decide to choose that style of drag, and are there many bearded queens in the South Florida drag community?

SS: I actually grew the beard while stuck at home during the pandemic. I thought, why not? I like how my drag style looks with the beard and I’ve never grown one before. So, I’ve adapted my style of drag to accommodate the beard, but I love that it’s a new challenge for me. Plus, I just won my first national title of “America’s Bearded Queen!” Here in South Florida, there are a few bearded queens. They are appearing slowly but surely.

that you find so attractive and appealing?

is. Just something about seeing a hot guy head-to-toe in leather gets me going [laughs].

DP: What are some of your interests outside of drag? SS: I like various things like movies and going out to eat, but the pandemic kind of made me a homebody, but I’m okay with that! I also make costumes and I’m always looking to create new shows.

DP: What are some future goals you would like to accomplish with your drag career?

SS: As I said earlier, I won a national title in November

common in the drag scene overall?

as “America’s Bearded Queen,” so this year, I will be touring the U.S., and possibly the UK. I’m looking forward to visiting places I’ve never had a chance to see yet. This year is also my 20th anniversary of doing drag. I would like to keep working and be happy and healthy.

SS: Yes, I’m a firm believer that entertainment is

DP: Before we wrap up, is there anything else you would

DP: Do you think bearded queens are becoming more

entertainment, and it’s becoming more common. Why shouldn’t it? Times have changed. Equality for all!

DP: How do you respond when people claim that bearded queens are just messy and unpolished?

like to mention or plug?

SS: All I’ll say is keep an eye out because new things are coming and be kind to everyone. Remember, it’s just drag!

Interview with a BBB South Florida LGBTQ+ CEO

Rod Davis

By Cinthya Lavin

How do you celebrate Pride and what does it mean to you? Pride is timed to coincide with the Stonewall riots, often cited as the birth of the LGBTQ+ movement for equal rights. Pride is a celebration of community, a recognition of the progress that has been made for LGBTQ+ and a call to action. I celebrate Pride by spending time with my husband, friends and LGBTQ+ friends and allies, attending local Pride events and supporting causes. Unfortunately, there is always a cause that emerges each year and the epidemic of crime targeting Transgender individuals and the recent anti-LGBTQ+ legislation are examples of issues that I will continue to work with the community to overcome in the year ahead. What do you think people can do during pride month to raise awareness of LGBTQ+ issues? Harvey Milk, the gay politician and one of the leaders of the LGBTQ+ community challenged our community to come out. He did so, knowing that it was not always easy, especially in the 60s and 70s, but it remains true for many people even today. Every member of the LGBTQ+ community has family, friends and co-workers who know us. It is harder to accept the demonization of the LGBTQ+ community when people know and love someone in that community. In addition to just talking with friends, family and associates, we also need to organize and vote. How do you feel about the current representation of LGBTQ+ community in the business marketplace? LBGTQ+ people are creative and entrepreneurial and we have many members of our community leading strong businesses. We don’t know exactly how many business leaders are from the community, but in “safe communities” like Wilton Manors, the LGBTQ+ leaders are visible and provide examples for the aspiring business leaders of tomorrow. There are also LGBTQ+ Chambers and many of the traditional business organizations also provide

od Davis is the CEO of the Better Business Bureau serving Southeast Florida and the Caribbean. Rod is in his seventh year as BBB’s CEO and during his tenure he has heavily focused on community outreach, strategic partnerships to help small businesses, and promoting diversity within the local and national BBB. As a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community, Rod shares his thoughts on Pride and the business community.

networking opportunities for the LGBTQ+ business leaders in their membership. Do you have advice for people that want to start their own company specifically in the LGBTQ+ community? Like any start up business, it is critical to have a solid business plan, effective marketing and good customer service. Organizations like SBDC, BBB, SCORE, business incubators and chamber organizations, especially the LGBTQ+ Chambers, are great resources for LGBTQ+ entrepreneurs to utilize. These organizations can help, not only with the initial development and launch, but ongoing support to keep your business prospering. You only get one chance to make a first impression so invest the time and resources to get it right from day one. How can companies create inclusive environments for LGBTQ+ employees? The best way to create a welcoming environment for LGBTQ+ employees is to have a culture that celebrates diversity. Our community is a melting pot bringing together people from various countries, languages, religions, genders, sexual orientations, age groups, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Only with the full inclusion and engagement of employees from these varied communities, can a business most easily understand and adapt to reach, engage and motivate the broader community. The commitment to diversity must be genuine and embraced because employees and customers will see through efforts that fall short.

Miss Bouvèé is Ready for Her Close Up! By Steven O. Evans, PhD Cover and article photos credit: Michael Johns | Hair and costumes by: Dan Gagnon

I

n November 2020, South Florida was introduced

OC: Oh really? Tell us about that!

to live-singing drag queen Miss Minnie Faye

Bouvèé as she made her debut at Matty’s on Wilton Drive located in Wilton Manors. Since then, she has been taking the cabaret industry by storm and was featured on our February 2021 cover. We caught up to see how things have been going for her since then and what projects she has in store for us. OutClique: How have things been for you?

MB: Oh, an OutClique exclusive! [Laughs]. Well, I can tell you that after the success of Minnie Behind Bars in the fall of 2021, we do have another murder mystery coming. We have an entirely new script, a cast of five, and a hilarious “Who done it?” plot coming this way. The playwright will be Robert Leleux who wrote both Minnie Behind Bars and Double Trouble. We will have info on that in the early fall.

Miss Bouvèé: Oh my goodness, booked and blessed as they say. I scaled back on some cabaret and traveled a bit because my body and voice were

OC: You have been traveling a lot for your cabaret gigs. Do you have a favorite location?

struggling to keep up. It’s a lot to stand up there and be funny for three hours, let alone sing constant showstoppers like Whitney Houston and Wicked. Also, keeping an audience interested in you for three hours a night is werq! You know, I grew up on a theatrical stage. We had a script to help. Not so in cabaret!

OC: Speaking of theater, you just finished a successful run of your original show Double Trouble in February 2022 with cabaret leading lady Jennifer McClain. How do you feel about that and will there be more? MB: Jennifer McClain and I had so much fun on that stage at every performance. Double Trouble really was the first step I took into independently producing. It was a personal challenge and I absolutely hope to continue doing it. Double Trouble itself will see additional runs in other cities this summer. I would consider running it again here, but we have other shows we want to do.

MB: That’s a hard question to answer because I genuinely love and deeply invest in my audiences everywhere. I think each place has something unique that I do enjoy though. Fire Island has such a queer history and a great mix of people. Key West is island life and always has such positive vibes. Naples is such a unique venue and location. The audience there has become so very dear to me. Detroit is the Kansas to my Dorothy. There’s no place like home, and the people who Miss Bouvèé first entertained. Wilton Manors is like Gay Disney, but this little slice of heaven has a pulse that makes my heart quicken. It challenges me, and most of all, it supports me. For that, I am so grateful. OC: Speaking of challenges, you announced back in December 2021 that you are making a full length feature film this year. How is that going? MB: It’s moving along at a healthy pace. Making a film, I am finding, is very, very, very different OutClique.com | 55

done in February 2022, but we won’t begin filming until November. In the meantime, we successfully raised 100 percent of our start up funds of $15,000 through an online campaign and with local fundraisers. I have to thank Matty’s, The Pub on the Drive, and Bambusa (Naples, FL) for their help in that process! It has had its challenges. I am not a patient person [laughs]. I want it done and ready to view, but the director, who is also my co-producer, tells me we are moving forward at a very healthy pace. We will begin filming in November in New Orleans. I guess if it were easy, everyone would do it. Also, I have to thank local gay film/art supporters Marc Martorana and

MB: Set in the steamy underworld of the New Orleans French Quarter, this is a tale of horror, murder, mayhem, and sisters one good and one evil - torn between their love for one man. With show-stopping original musical numbers, a battle for territory with the infamous Poodles Makenzie requires the Bouvèé sisters to set aside their differences and work together to become Big Easy Queens! their home to host a dinner party for prospective investors and donors in midMay 2022. They believe in the film, it’s queer niche that it will fill, and are helping it take steps towards succeeding. Don has my vote!

OC: Who is directing and producing the film? MB: Oh my word, the amazing Erynn Dalton is directing the film. She lives here in South Florida and is really making some momentum in the independent film industry. Her current film going into production before mine has some amazing recognizable names in it. She knows what 56 | OutClique.com

MB: I can share two so far, myself excluded. The role of Poodles Makenzie will be played by Jennifer McClain and the role of Amos/Varla will be played by Jeffery Roberson Loe, known to most as Varla Jean Merman. We have others in the workings, but I can’t really announce until their deals are finalized. It’s been very, very exciting to see it all come together! OC: What’s been the most challenging part about making a film so far? MB: Well, exercising as much patience as possible would be a start. Along with

OC: What do you mean?

the business aspects of film and investing and has done this for several films already. I really have to lean on her and learn. Someone once told me, ‘In show business, if you don’t know anything about business, you’ll have nothing to show.’

OC: When will we be able to see the film? MB: First off, with so many South Floridians already involved, we do hope to have the big premiere here. Whether that is in a film festival or its own event, that depends on the timeline in post production. Again, something I have to exercise patience in. It takes about six months or more in some cases to edit, close caption, format, and finish the film. So, depending on how quickly those facets of the film can be finished once filming wraps, that will determine when the film will be premiered and ultimately shown, hopefully nationwide or distributed, whether physically or streamed. There are just a lot of factors, but we are hoping that by Pride season 2023 or by Halloween 2023, we will have a film you can all enjoy!

MB: Look, I rarely, if ever, bring politics into my show or brand. I always say that I don’t care if you are left wing or right wing, we are all part of the same bird. However, being queer is inherently progressive. Being in drag is inherently progressive. I do feel that it is an aspect of my job to speak up and out for those that don’t have a voice, or worse, are oppressed or silenced by a majority. OC: Why do you feel it is important to speak up and speak out? MB: Drag queens historically have been warriors. In every decade, you would find them at the forefront of our fight for progress and equality. We owe it to our predecessors to carry this tradition on. We can bring excitement and unity to the community. I believe it to be part of the job. Hence, the cover photo for this issue. I understand it to be somewhat controversial, but it’s essential we say gay and say it loud! After all, if you’re not casting a little shade, you’re not standing in the spotlight!

OC: That is all so exciting! Why do you think this film is important in queer culture?

OC: Amen! Thank you for sitting down with us. Where can people stay up-to-date on all things Bouvèé.

MB: There are some romantic comedies that will enter queer canon now like Single All The Way, camp classics like Die. Mommie, Die, comedies like Too Wong Foo, musicals like Rocky Horror Picture Show, and even drag dramedies like Priscilla Queen of the Desert, but our film fills a void. The niche of horror, camp, comedy is slim and has almost no

Smashing Expectations at Florida AIDS Walk By John Hayden

Attendees at the Florida AIDS Walk | Photo Credit: John Parra/Getty Images for AIDS Healthcare Foundation

The goal for the 2022 Florida AIDS Walk & Music Festival was not modest. For an event as well known as this, $1,500,000 is ambitious. Turns out, they weren’t thinking big enough! Donations exceeded $1.5 million even before the event stepped off. As of this writing, $2.1 million has been raised. “The AIDS Walk is the largest fundraiser of its kind in our state,” Zachary Durand, community outreach director for Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis told OutClique. “At a time when the LGBTQ community and other minority group rights are being restricted in the legislature, it’s important that everyone continue to show up in droves.” AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) runs the walk and distributes funds to local HIV/AIDS service organizations like Broward House and AQUA Foundation. “The number one thing for us is that we are so grateful that we were chosen as a beneficiary this year by AHF,” Aqua Foundation for Women Board Chair Karen CostelloWilder says. “That really helps smaller organizations, like us, and we’re grateful to be part of it.” AHF is a global organization that prioritizes health awareness surrounding HIV/AIDS. They partner with local agencies to bring help directly into the communities that need them. South Florida continues to have one of the highest rates of new infections, a problem that has been in our region for years. Costello-Wilder says developing the next generation of

HIV activists is one way they use their funds. “We offer a scholarship program at Aqua,” she explains. “Currently, one of our scholars is getting her masters in entomology, and we’re discussing putting together a program for women with HIV and trans with HIV. Having panels there, a testing site, and start talking about it more.” After the walk, the party began. Deborah Cox and Jessie J co-headlined the event, both belting out hits that had the crowd of thousands singing along. Both have been longtime allies in our community. Local organizations, businesses, and groups of friends formed teams to raise money and have fun. “Amazing. Both girls blew my mind,” The Pub’s Joshua Seaton says. “The Pub, LIT Bar, Gym Bar, we all came together as a family for the community.” “We do this kind of work,” Ogui Vila of Team Latinos Salud adds. “It’s nice to see people recognize the work. It’s also important to have gay latino representation in the Miami area.” Local diva and legend Kitty Meow, was emcee, and this was her third year hosting the Florida Aids Walk and Music Festival. “By far, this is certainly the largest audience I have ever seen in attendance for the event,” she says.

Easier HIV Treatment is Here B

etter health may be more convenient than ever. People living with HIV/AIDS currently have to take at least one pill every day to remind them of their status. That means keeping their undetectable status can hurt their mental health. Now Midland Medical is offering access to a new drug, Cabenuva, that only requires a treatment once a month. “We’re pretty excited right now,” Diana Gaytan told OutClique. It’s an injection that can treat adults. It replaces their oral tablet. They would only need to get it once a month at an injection site, or up to two months, instead of taking the daily oral treatment.” As the clinical manager at Midland Medical Center in Oakland Park, FL, she sees first hand the impact this can make on patients. Cabenuva is the first and only long-acting, complete HIV regimen you can take monthly or every other month. The drug company says it is given every other month or monthly by a healthcare provider as two injections, after you take about a month of once-daily starter pills. Your every other month regimen begins after two consecutive months of injections. Gaytan says she or Midland Medical staff talks with all patients to make sure they can make their regular

appointments for injections. “So far we’ve seen our patients that are getting the injectable are being very compliant.” So far, in her experience, the patients who opt-in for Cabenuva with Midland Medical love it. “From what I’ve heard from our patients, the daily pill is a reminder of the mistake that they made and now have HIV. For them they now don’t have to take the pill. They love it. It’s fantastic.” Cabenuva must be prescribed, and is only for HIVpositive patients who are undetectable. While the drug was approved last year, it wasn’t until 2022 that it was approved for once every other month. While South Florida is a ‘hot spots’ for new infections overall, the crisis is especially urgent for HIV-positive women, especially women of color. There is hope that Cabenuva and Midland Medical can spread the message of new treatments and erase the stigma attached with HIV/ AIDS. “It is hard right now. A large part of the community that have HIV are latinos and African Americans,” Gaytan says. “There has to be a lot of outreach.” If you are HIV-positive, doctors at Midland Medical are able to talk with you about Cabenuva to see if it’s the right treatment for you.

Broward Health Earns High Marks in Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s 2022 Healthcare Equality Index

Courtesy of Human Rights Campaign Foundation

Broward Health announced four of its hospitals received high evaluation scores and the designation of “LGBTQ+ Healthcare Equality Top Performer” in the Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s 15th anniversary edition of the Healthcare Equality Index (HEI), the nation’s foremost benchmarking survey of healthcare facilities on policies and practices dedicated to the equitable treatment and inclusion of LGBTQ+ patients, visitors and employees. “We are honored to be recognized by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation for our commitment to the respectful, equitable treatment of everyone in Broward County’s wonderfully diverse communities,” said Barry Gallison, vice president of clinical quality and risk management, Broward Health. “Sustaining an environment that welcomes our differences and unique contributions benefits us all.” A record 906 healthcare facilities actively participated in the 2022 HEI survey and 251 of those earned an “LGBTQ+ Healthcare Equality Top Performer” designation. Broward Health hospitals received the following high HEI scores out of a possible 100 points: • • • •

Broward Health Imperial Point: 90 Broward Health Medical Center: 80 Broward Health North: 80 Broward Health Coral Springs: 75

The HEI evaluates and scores healthcare facilities on detailed criteria falling under four central pillars:

foundational policies and training in LGBTQ+ patientcentered care; LGBTQ+ patient services and support; employee benefits and policies; and patient and community engagement. “Every person deserves to be respected and heard by their doctor and feel safe in the hospital,” said Tari Hanneman, director of health & aging at The Human Rights Campaign. “LGBTQ+ people are subject to discrimination in all spaces, including healthcare facilities, which leads to members of the community avoiding care and anticipating our voices will not be respected in an extremely vulnerable environment.”

About Broward Health Broward Health, providing service for more than 80 years, is a nationally recognized system in South Florida that offers world-class healthcare to all. The Broward Health system includes the statutory teaching hospital Broward Health Medical Center, Broward Health North, Broward Health Imperial Point, Broward Health Coral Springs, Salah Foundation Children’s Hospital, Broward Health Weston, Broward Health Community Health Services, Broward Health Physician Group, Broward Health Urgent Care, Broward Health International, and Broward Health Foundation. For more information, visit BrowardHealth.org. About the Human Rights Campaign Foundation The Human Rights Campaign Foundation is the educational arm of the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), America’s largest civil rights organization working to achieve equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ+) people. Through its programs, the HRC Foundation seeks to make transformational change in the everyday lives of LGBTQ+ people, shedding light on inequity and deepening the public’s understanding of LGBTQ+ issues, with a clear focus on advancing transgender and racial justice. Its work has transformed the landscape for more than 15 million workers, 11 million students, 1 million clients in the adoption and foster care system and so much more. The HRC Foundation provides direct consultation and technical assistance to institutions and communities, driving the advancement of inclusive policies and practices; it builds the capacity of future leaders and allies through fellowship and training programs; and, with the firm belief that we are stronger working together, it forges partnerships with advocates in the U.S. and around the globe to increase our impact and shape the future of our work.

Hush Spa Keeps Community Relaxed By John Hayden | Photos Courtesy of Hush Spa

The front door of Hush Spa sits along Wilton Drive in the heart of Wilton Manors, but once you step inside, you’re suddenly a world away. While the spa has been there for sometime, new owner David Sims has been working constantly to improve everything from the services offered to the overall vibe. Part of that vibe is making sure Hush Spa makes everyone feel welcome. “I don’t want it to be a spa just for men or just for women,” Sims told OutClique. “I have the trans logo outfront because we’re in the LGBT center down here. I want everyone in this community to feel welcome.” From the mood lighting to the eclectically cool decor, this place feels different from other spas, and Sims is just getting started. “I’m not going to stop adding stuff until it’s tacky and overflowing. We can do this, we can do that! More color! More neon!” Besides changing the look, Sims is expanding the services offered. “We’re constantly increasing the services we do here. We do massage, body grooming and hair removal, and we do facials. We just added skin tag removal.” Getting treatments in South Florida can offer special challenges, such as making sure a client isn’t going to be in the sun after certain treatments, like microdermabrasion.

Also, each client is different and needs different levels of care. Sims says once an appointment is booked, the customer stays until it’s complete. “We may block out an hour, but if the [employee] says it’s going to take longer, it takes longer. The price doesn’t change.” These days, facials are very popular, and they go hand-inhand with many other provided services. Sims also has a fun term for popular treatments. “Back, crack, and sac is what I usually call it. People want their back smooth, crack smooth, and sac smooth. The essentials. Down here people are concerned how they look from head to toe. We make you look good.” Hush Spa requires appointments, and offers 10 percent off for booking online. Setting an appointment makes sure the right person is available for the treatment. Members of Sims’ staff are often improving their skills. “Every single person here is continually doing courses. [At least] once a month someone is off to do an extra course in something or add something that we’re going to add to the menu. They’re really full force into what they do.” At the end of the day, Sims says a satisfied customer is key. “I want you to feel like when you’re here, this is your time. You’re being catered to and I want whatever experience you’re having to be great.”

Living History at Stonewall By John Hayden Nothing predicts the future better than the past. At a time when the LGBTQ community is fighting against being erased, preserving and telling our history is more important than ever. Stonewall National Museum & Archives in Fort Lauderdale is the keeper of our history. The LGBTQ equivalent of Egypt’s Great Library of Alexandria, the site has a thorough collection of knowledge that can easily be lost if not cared for. Stonewall has more than 28,000 books as well as a treasure trove of media that chronicles our stories stretching back decades before the Stonewall Riots of 1969.

“It’s very important for organizations like this to continue to fight for LGBTQ rights,” Hunter O’Hanian, Stonewall’s Executive Director, told OutClique. “But also, to make sure that this history, work, and 50 years of activism have not gone away. There are people that are continuing to fight for it.” The Museum is in the midst of its membership drive, which is as focused on raising awareness of our history as it is on raising money. “Membership is important because we are a small, nonprofit organization,” O’Hanian explains. “We only have three employees and only a half million-dollar budget. We have a university-sized library and archive here.” Members get access to the materials and are allowed to check out books. They also get discounts at area businesses and, most importantly, help keep our history alive, loud, and proud. “Florida is a great example,” O’Hanian says. “In the late 1950s and early 1960s, there was something known as the Johns committee. The state legislature tried to remove every homosexual from teaching in any of the state’s colleges. They even entrapped young males in men’s rooms and public places to prove that they were homosexuals.”

If the story of trying to silence LGBTQ voices seems eerily familiar and modern, that’s because things like the “Don’t Say Gay” and “Stop Woke Act” are really history repeating. Stonewall’s focus is the LGBTQ communty, and it is working to get their wealth of materials into the hands of people who can make a difference. “We’ve done several things,” O’Hanian says. “Number one is the board has adopted a very proactive statement in opposition to the [‘Don’t Say Gay’] bill. The idea that you can’t say gay, we’re going the exact opposite and telling everyone to say gay. The other thing we’re doing is we’re ratcheting up the disbursement of materials that we have. Making those materials available to teachers who want to teach an LGBTQ curriculum about history and how you can talk about gay leaders in sports or music or literature.”

Dr. Drew Talks Love & Relationships in South Florida By John Hayden

R

elationships are hard. While the age of dating apps has made it easier to meet people, relationships are as hard as ever. Add in all the eye candy and obsession with looks and physical appearance that comes with living in South Florida, and the idea of relationships can be overwhelming. To help us get it sorted is legendary relationship expert, Dr. Drew Pinsky. He was recently in downtown Miami to check out TopDoc Clinics and their new location inside The Four Seasons on Brickell Ave. Between his practice and as host of the legendary relationship show Loveline, he’s heard it all. Dr. Drew took a few minutes to talk with OutClique and give us some insight into what makes a good relationship…and what makes a bad one. John Hayden: We’re coming out of a pandemic and a lot of people find the dating landscape has changed, but we’re still falling into old habits that might not work anymore…if they ever did to begin with.

Dr. Drew Pinsky: The bottom line is to always assess your tendencies. If you have a pattern of not selecting the healthiest of relationships, you need to be honest about that and try to figure out why that pattern exists. One of the interesting things about humans is: our bodies are perfect instruments from the standpoint of what creates attractions. We don’t do a lot of talking about this in our culture, where attractions come from. Why are you attracted to this person and not that person? If you want a relationship, are you feeling lightning bolts? Every time you feel lightning bolts, it’s going to be the same person. I don’t care what the package is. I don’t care what they look like. They seem like someone totally different than you’re used to, but if you feel a lightning bolt, that person is going to do the same thing to you as your previous pattern. We always tell people: think butterflies, not lightning bolts. Maybe it’s people that are not quite so exciting. You can have a little bit of lightning bolt off in the distance, but not that kind of ‘Oh, I’m so attracted to that person!’ if you have a pattern of people who don’t give you what you need.

JH: What about people who aren’t in a toxic cycle but just have trouble finding someone?

Dr. Drew: If you are not deep in a pattern of bad picking but just having trouble finding people, this is a day and age when there is so much efficiency. Finding people with the advent of online dating apps, there are so many ways to meet. What I tell people is to enjoy the process. Don’t be looking for the next intimate partner. Just enjoy meeting people, hanging out, having a meal, learning about yourself in the context of other people. Just enjoy the process and don’t be so intent on the outcome. It’s not the goal so much as the journey.

JH: Finding love in South Florida can add an extra layer of challenges.

Dr. Drew: The multiculturalism here has its own set of issues with it that you have to be very, very attuned to. Down here in Miami, people are maybe even more physically focused than in Los Angeles. We’re out of control there, but Miami’s just as worse, maybe more so. That is saying something, and not in a bad way! I have no problem with that if people want to optimize their bodies. Good for you, especially if it makes you feel confident and being able to put yourself out there. By all means, do that. We work out, and sometimes we’re watching our weight not just for health, but because we want to look a certain way. In terms of the challenges, it’s the challenge of distractions in a massive market. You’re in this huge pool with all kinds of people, and you never know what they’re looking for or are interested in. What might distract them or pull them away. It’s the good news and the bad news. You’re in this tremendously dynamic environment. You’re going to meet lots of different and interesting kinds of people and you’re in this dynamic environment. You can get overwhelmed by it.

JH: Erectile Dysfunction, or ED, is a growing problem in men. Maybe it’s always been a problem, but people don’t like to talk about it. How is that holding them back?

Dr. Drew: Believe me, we have heard it all. There’s not a doctor out there that’s not fully equipped to hear your story and hasn’t heard it 100 times before. There’s no embarrassment on our end, so you shouldn’t feel any resistance to talk about what’s bothering you. Particularly men, there’s a stigma where we go into denial. We want

it to just go away. We aren’t as proactive about our health as we should be. Here’s the thing about sexual health: it can be a sign of other problems. It’s good to talk to a doctor, especially if you’re a smoker or over 50. If you’re younger, there’s a lot to be done.

JH: Another thing people are hesitant to talk about is mental health. Once you decide to get therapy, finding the right therapist can be as hard as finding a boyfriend!

Dr. Drew: It’s even more complicated than that. You have to understand what kind of therapeutic modalities are out there, and what kind you need. It’s really difficult for people to understand these different types. There are all kinds of therapy out there, and you have to be really careful that the person you pick is trained to give you the kind of treatment you need. I usually have people see a psychiatrist first, to get a proper diagnostic assessment, and then a referral to the kind of therapist they need. Most people won’t do that, and to be fair, might not have

insurance or want to do that, and I get it. They’re afraid they’ll be prescribed medication or something. That being said, understand that the big issue facing most people with any sort of interpersonal struggle, or mood or anxiety struggles, childhood traumas is the one we see the most. Very frequently you want someone with good training and trauma therapies. That’s not just skill and training, but also talent. So, word of mouth can be very, very helpful.

JH: Before we go, what advice do you have for us as we emerge into the “new normal?”

Dr. Drew: We’ve been through this really unpleasant couple of years, and we want to thrive. Humans need to thrive. Humans need work, love, and play. Play and love kind of go together in Miami. Good! Go thrive! We need that. Enjoy yourself, don’t feel guilty about it. Don’t feel like you have to be imprisoned any longer. Go out and live. We are a social animal, and we need to be with and amongst other people. Go do that.

Celebrating 35 Years of the Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus By Denny Patterson

F

ounded in 1986 by Dr. Gary Keating during the uncertainty and tragedy of the early AIDS era, the Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus (FTLGMC) became the first established gay performing arts organization in the state of Florida.

attacks we’ve been dealing with for the past 35 years. Our job is to bring communities together.”

Celebrating its 35th anniversary, the chorus continues to help its audiences and members thrive and flourish. Together, they have built one of the most vibrant LGBTQ communities in the world.

“I was walking by Carnegie Hall and there were posters for the NYCGMC,” he says. “I bought tickets for the next night. It was totally sold out, and the proud response of the audience was overwhelming. I have a Masters in choral conducting and wasn’t using it, and there wasn’t anything really happening in South Florida. We were still recovering from Anita Bryant. So, it just hit me that this could be a great thing for our community, and it turned out to be true. Our first concerts, one at Gusman/Olympia Theater in Miami and Parker a week later were oversold. We had to turn people away for every concert for the first four years.”

“This is a very exciting time,” FTLGMC President Justin Knight says. “Like everyone, we are coming out of a very difficult period right now with COVID, and then losing a member and dealing with the difficulties that happened at Stonewall Pride a year ago, we are very happy to celebrate our 35-year history and we are looking towards the future. We’ve heard feedback that people think that the concept of a chorus is outdated, but in a lot of ways, we are still serving the same purpose that we always have. There’s as much need now, if not more than ever, because people feel so isolated and our community is under the same

According to Keating, a business trip in New York City inspired him to start the FTLGMC.

In addition to sold out concerts, the FTLGMC also sang at several funerals during its early years. “We sang at 31 funerals for our members, plus some other

services for gay community leaders who died of AIDS,” Keating recalls. Knight joined the FTLGMC 15 years ago when he was new to and introduced to the chorus through friends. “I have musical experience in my background and I was interested in exploring that and having an artistic outlet again,” he explains. “I was also joining a family, a brotherhood where we could share that experience of creating music together. The impact that we’ve had on the community being South Florida’s first performing arts organization, we’ve paved the way for all the others that exist now. We created a culture and an environment where people who are in the gay community or support the gay community can have a home and be artistic.” The more well-known the chorus became, people began to change their minds about the gay community. “Changing hearts and minds - the chorus did it and they are still doing it today,” Keating says. “Just our existence is a political statement. The fight never seems to end.” On Saturday, May 7, 2022, the FTLGMC will have a 35th anniversary celebration concert entitled Why We Sing! at United Church of Christ Fort Lauderdale, located at 2501 NE 30th St. The performance begins at 8PM. “Audiences can expect a program that contains some of our greatest hits over our 35-year history,” Knight explains. “It’s music that we’ve performed before and it will include pieces from the very first concert to pieces we’ve done over the last few years. Uplifting songs, political songs, fun and campy songs, and we will have a musical ensemble

of instruments supporting us. Additionally, we are going to have a museum type display of artifacts and memorabilia from our past so attendees can relive our history and see what we’ve all been through together.” The concert will also include a section where previous FTLGMC members will be invited to sing with its current members. “We want previous members to know that it’s not just about celebrating the members that are in the chorus today,” Knight says. “We want to include people who may not be singing with us right now but are still a part of our family. We will have numbers that they’ll recognize and we’re going to ask them to come up and join us during the show.” Moving forward and looking towards the next 35 years, both Keating and Knight hope the FTLGMC will continue to be a support mechanism, home, and surrogate family for even more people in South Florida’s LGBTQ community. “By doing that, we are able to further spread our message of love, inclusion, and support across communitie because that’s our mission,” Knight says. “We bring communities together through high quality musical performances. We’ve had thousands of members at this point. Some of them are still with us, while some of them are not, but I hope we’re able to touch even more people in the future.” “In states like Florida, Texas, and others where attacks on our community are growing constantly, the community will still need groups like the chorus,” Keating adds. “But for individuals, it will still be vital to have choruses to join and feel community and have an artistic/creative outlet.”

Stay up-to-date and connect with the FTLGMC by following their Facebook page @theftlgmc, or visit their official website, FTLGMC.org. Tickets for the 35th anniversary celebration concert can be purchased online, or call (954) 832-0060. 124 | OutClique.com

Let Them Eat Cake! BenDeLaCreme’s Ready to be Committed By John Hayden

B

enDeLaCreme is terminally delightful and ready to be committed. The two-time alum of the RuPaul’s Drag Race franchise is looking for love in all the wrong places, including Fort Lauderdale. She’s bringing her show, BenDeLaCreme…Is Ready to be Committed, to the Amaturo Theater at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. She’s ready to get married and all she needs is the dress. And the ring. Enabling friends and objects. Oh.. and a husband! She debuted the show in 2019 in Provincetown and New York, but the pandemic forced production to stop. She used the downtime to make the act even more of a visual feast, and now she’s back in full force. BenDeLaCreme talked with OutClique about creating the show, finding a husband, and the perfect wedding cake. John Hayden: I’ve been looking at the previews of the show, and it seems like the wedding is front and center, and the loving husband is strictly an afterthought. BenDeLaCreme: All those details are really what matters about weddings, right? The husband is the final thing. All you need a groom for is to stand next to you while you yell at the caterer. The priority is the perfect cake, the perfect dress, the perfect diamond and then finding someone to give it to you. This is a show all about DeLa’s search for love and her race to get to the altar. JH: Tell me about the eclectic group of supporting characters. BenDeLa: In my show the cake is heavily featured. There are a variety of characters that DeLa meets along her quest for love. One of the key characters is her wedding cake topper bride. She’s the bitchy bridezilla that keeps DeLa on her toes. She has to keep up with this bride’s strong feelings of what a wedding should be. There’s a variety of characters in this. There’s a group of gay men whose entire purpose is to fall all over themselves to make sure DeLa finds the perfect dress. There’s a bachelorette novelty penis water bottle that comes to life and is a devout, problematic lesbian that has a lot to say on the nature of the history of marriage. A lot of them we meet along the way. JH: I love cake! What is the best flavor for wedding cake? Vanilla? Chocolate? Other? BenDeLa: You need enough tiers so you can have one of each (flavor). A wedding cake should be taller than you. I really believe you should take full advantage. One of those

where you do a layer of chocolate cake, the vanilla cake, the pumpkin pie, the pecan pie. Let’s throw a turducken in there. Get the whole nine yards. JH: From Grindr to Tinder, Christian Mingle to For Farmers Only, there are lots of ways to meet people. What’s the best app for finding a husband? BenDeLa: In the show, DeLa does use Grindr to choose the perfect person, so I’d have to go with Grindr since that’s the branding. She’s really searching for the perfect individual. However, she doesn’t understand a lot of the language. When someone says “PNP” she thinks it’s because someone sat on their phone or whatever. Someone asks her if she’s into pig bottoms and she assumes they want pork belly for dinner. JH: Describe the person who’s gonna like it and put a ring on it. BenDeLa: Whoever is willing to fill the vows that DeLa’s already written. They are to have, to hold, stay out of my way, let me do whatever I want, stop bothering me, that sort of thing. The worst thing about relationships is the other person. I just need someone to go with me and see what I’ve got going on, whim-wise. JH: Does a wedding even happen if no one sees it? BenDeLa: One of the best things about marriage in our modern day is, there is no end to the reality TV shows you can be cast on during the process and after. In reality, marriage is just a stepping stone to more publicity. JH: I know you’ve visited South Florida and Wilton Manors, but have you performed here? BenDeLa: I’ve never gotten to bring one of my solo shows to Fort Lauderdale and I am really happy that I get to share this experience with all these Floridians. JH: Finally, this is an intense tour schedule. How do you keep it all together night after night? BenDeLa: The biggest trick is to maintain that perfect balance, going back and forth between caffeine and alcohol. You really gotta ride that roller coaster. We don’t want to dip into any Judy Garland area, but it’s about finding that chemical balance.

BenDeLaCreme will be at the Amaturo Theater at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts at 8PM on Friday, May 20, 2022. For tickets visit BrowardCenter.org.

Café Society Pride Celebrates Pride Month Content Courtesy of GENVAS | Photos Courtesy of The Artist

illiam “Willie” Riddle the Founder and Artistic Director of Generation Venetian Arts Society, GENVAS, announced today that the organization will continue their Café Society Pride Series on June 9, 2022, when they present Karina Iglesias, soprano, at ArtServe. Café Society Pride Series is original programming inspired by the real life “beautiful people” and “bright young things’’ who gathered in fashionable New York city cafés and restaurants beginning at the end of Prohibition in 1933. This series specifically celebrates members of the LGBTQ community and presents LGBTQ artists whose life and work promotes the beauty and importance of acceptance and inclusion. Riddle said, “ With all of the trials and tribulations humanity has endured for the past several years--and especially in this moment of hatred & violence--the communication of peace and kindness that only music can speak is truly needed right now. We are also deeply appreciative to Phillip Dunlap, jazz piano, whose triumphant performance in March of 2002 launched the series.” Karina Iglesias, soprano, is known for a style equally informed by rhythm & blues, boleros, gospel and hip-hop Karina delivers her performances with the intimacy of a deep soul crooner. In 2009, the singer-songwriter was chosen by Emilo Estafan as one of an eight-person choir/ ensemble hired by the Miami Dolphins (Dolphins Voices). In 2011, Karina sang a duet with Sony Latin Recording Artist, Franco de Vita, who has sold over 20 million albums worldwide. She was featured in his live DVD album, Primera Fila, which won 2 Latin GRAMMY Awards. In 2013, Karina was a contestant on NBC’s #1 Hit TV Show, The Voice. A South Florida favorite, this Salon is expected to sell out.

Jason Antone

The series continues on September 29, 2022 when Jason Antone, tenor, makes his GENVAS premier. Jason is a vocalist, songwriter, and producer. A graduate of the DePaul School, Antone gained a double level in vocal research and music administration. Jason has enjoyed enormous

success in all aspects of the music industry but particularly in the classical crossover world. He is well-known for his mastery of his craft and his ability to leave an imprint on your soul. This three-time Billboard charting artist is praised by critics for his unique style and stage presence The 2022 Café Society Pride Series closes on December 8th with Tony Award Winner Levi Kreis popular “Home for the Holidays” concert. Levi returns to the GENVAS audience by popular demand. This east Tennessee native is best known for his gospel-rich vocals and church-inspired piano style. He is beloved for his “southern style” which has defined some of his best-known songs. Every stage of Levi’s life has been chronicled through his albums. Each one reveals a new side to this singer/songwriter, taking you through a myriad of genres – piano pop, gospel, country, R&B, and jazz. Levi’s music has been featured in film and television shows including The Vampire Diaries, Sons of Anarchy, and So You Think You Can Dance. Ten albums have afforded Kreis impressive accolades – top ten positions on various charts, #1 music videos, national tours, TV appearances on The View, David Letterman, Jimmy Fallon and a Tony Award for originating the role of Jerry Lee Lewis in Broadway’s Million Dollar Quartet. With a multi-talent like Kreis, it’s no wonder his impact has been broad and varied. Levi has launched a new podcast called “The Church of Kreis,” providing practical spiritual principles to help you get tangible results on your way to radical self-improvement. “ Tickets are available on the organization’s website www. genvas.org. VIP tickets are $65.00 and include a private table, table service, wine and light appetizers. General admissions tickets are $25.00 and include access to a cash bar All patrons can take complimentary tours of the Stonewall Museum and World AIDS Museum before the concert. Doors open at 6:00 P.M. and the Salons begin at 7:00 P.M. ArtServe is located at 1350 East Sunrise Boulevard, Fort La33304uderdale, Florida
