THANKSGIVING

AND THE SPIRITUAL PRACTICE OF THANKS GIVING By Rev. Patrick Rogers, MDiv.

Photos by JR Davis 2017 Fort Lauderdale/Wilton Manors Interfaith Service Leaders

P

rior to his instructions about the “Lord’s Supper” in 1 Corinthians, Paul tells us about sharing a meal often to remind us of the need for togetherness and to eliminate harmful divisions. During Paul’s reminder, he quotes, “Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it . . ..” First, He was thankful! After breaking the bread, Jesus took the cup and in the same way blessed it. The same way of first giving thanks. The Old and New Testaments both are filled with instructions to be thankful, even during times in our lives when the challenges seem to overwhelm us. Three years ago while attending my first Jewish temple worship service, I also witnessed the sharing of a meal of bread and wine. Of course, it wasn’t in the context of Christian communion, but it helped me realize the importance of gathering together for a special

occasion as a family, breaking bread, and the togetherness and reminders of embracing one another. The next enlightenment on my path came from my Canadian friends. I discovered that Canada also has a Thanksgiving Day. I joke with them that they celebrate it on the wrong day of the year as theirs is in October. My research then revealed that Thanksgiving Day is celebrated in numerous countries around the world. A special day with the focus on being thankful and for thanks giving! One of my favorite days of giving thanks happens not only on our American Thanksgiving holiday, traditionally the fourth Thursday of November, but also annually on the third Thursday of November at 7:30PM in Fort Lauderdale/Wilton Manors. It is our city’s annual Interfaith Service with a Thanks Giving theme!

At this annual event, we are reminded to focus on our togetherness and to bless the diversity of our religious differences and especially to embrace and be thankful for that which we have in common which is love. During this time of worship, we learn and spiritually grow as we come together as one human family. We grow because we are easily able to witness and experience that which we do have in

common which is to be grateful people and to embrace and celebrate our commonalities and connections with one another. It is always a fruitful holiday religious experience. All are welcome. I give thanks for thanks giving and for Thanksgiving. It is a divine practice!

You are invited to the annual Fort Lauderdale/Wilton Manors Interfaith Service on Thursday, November 15, 2018 at 7:30PM. It is hosted by United Church of Christ Fort Lauderdale, 2501 Northeast 30 Street, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33306. Visit us at www.UCCFTL.org or call us at (954) 563-4271.

THE TIME IS NOW By Taina Ty Dorce

T

he clichés, how well we know them: “Just do it,” “Think positive,” “One step at a time,” and all the other oh-socommon ones! A health and fitness journey is just that, a journey. Getting started to a healthy lifestyle takes discipline, starting in your mind. Our minds are like fragile computers; one tiny glitch can set us off into a tailspin. Whether it be a relationship, a career, a child, an illness, a set back in our eating habits, or a missed day at the gym. If we let them, they can mess up our disciplined minds. That’s where it all starts, getting your mind right. I like to think, “Back to center.” A centered mind is easily pulled back to a stable place of discipline. This means no highs or no lows will set us too far from center. You may have to pull back to center a hundred times a day, but that is where it starts. Our stable place is a disciplined mind. Here you learn balance. Here you learn the scales can never tip too far out of center. Your diet is the single most important thing you can do for your health. Our food intake can easily affect our thought process; put a lot of processed foods in, get a mind full of junk. Here we can easily practice self abuse if we choose.

For example, getting angry at ourselves for falling to a weakness for chocolate, ice cream, or whatever your guilty pleasure is. It is not the end of the world if you have a bad eating day. Just quickly pull back to center! Speaking of habits, did you know it takes 21 to 30 days to break or form a habit pattern? During this time, you can break or create some very powerful habits. Is it easy? Probably not for everyone. The good news is that anyone can do it! The centered mind to the rescue! During the starting period of habit breaking or forming, do not cease for at least 21 days as your mind will develop your new healthy habit (or a bad habit for that matter, but we’re talking about forming good habits here)! Now let’s talk about exercise. Most adults should do at least three hours of exercise each week. That’s 180 minutes of the 10,080 minutes in each week. That is less than 2% of your weekly time! During this time your heart rate should be increased resulting in a sweat due to moderate-intensity exercise. On your journey, don’t look around you to see what others are doing, look inside of YOU. There you will find your peace, your strength, and your disciplined, centered mind! Let’s do this as the time is now! OutClique.com | 15

WE ARE DELIGHTED TO WELCOME DELIGHTED By Denny Patterson

K

nown as a “Queen of all Trades,” Delighted Tobehere is not your ordinary drag queen. She combines celebrity illusions, vocal impressions, live vocals, lip sync, comedy, intelligence, and quick wit that will leave audiences begging for more. Hailing from the Carolinas, her southern upbringing and charm makes everyone feel comfortable and welcomed. Her entertainment career began in February 2001 when she performed alongside The Amorettes, “The Infamous Camp Drag Queens of the South.”

In addition to performing across the world, Delighted has been a guest speaker at multiple university lectures and seminars, and even appeared on NBC’s America’s Got Talent. Without a doubt, all four judges said, “yes.” I was delighted to talk more with Delighted about her upcoming shows and received the opportunity to learn more about who this comedy queen is exactly. First off, tell me who Delighted Tobehere is. What is she all about? Delighted is a southern live singing comedy queen based out of New York City. She’s uplifting, smart, silly, witty, and approachable. The name Delighted Tobehere is a reminder to live in the moment, live your best life, love yourself, and love each other. My character and shows are built on that foundation. Bottom line? She’s fun, funny, and friendly! Tell me more about your upcoming show at The Pub in Wilton Manors. What can audiences expect? Shows, my friend, shows! I’m bringing two completely different shows for Friday and Sunday nights. Friday will be “Delighted with a D!” It’s my drag variety show filled with live singing, comedy, audience participation, and all-around madcap antics. Sunday night will be my new flagship show, “DRAG 101,” which is a hilarious, live singing A to Z crash course in all

things drag. I bring the dressing room to the stage in this theatrical show showing you just what it really takes to be a Queen! It’s the perfect show for someone who has seen a thousand drag shows or none. Everything happens right before your eyes, yes, even that. In 2015, you debuted on NBC's America's Got Talent. What was that whole experience like? It was simply magical. I never auditioned. I was simply found at a drag brunch in L.A. Next thing I know I’m being whisked away to L.A., I was living in Charlotte, North Carolina at the time, and my very first experience with AGT was walking on the stage at the Dolby Theater, where they film the Academy Awards, and performing in front of 3,500 people and the celebrity judges for the filming. The judges were very kind, the crew was a blast to work with, and it was just such a great experience to see the behind the scenes workings of the machine that is AGT. It takes a lot of folks to make that show happen and it was fun to watch and to get to be a part of it! So sure, after getting four “yes” votes I didn’t move forward, I magically disappeared, but when you think about it, it’s kind of the best outcome. Nowhere on YouTube is there video of the judges voting me off! Just compliments and the validation of successfully being on network television. I loved the experience and mark it as one of the major highlights of my career.

Delighted will be making her way to Wilton Manors where she will be performing at The Pub on Friday, November 23, 2018 at 9:30PM and Sunday, November 25, 2018 at 9:00PM.

SOUTH FLORIDA’S

LATINOS SALUD By Denny Patterson

Photos By Connor Wilkinson (@HonnorConnor) 28 | OutClique.com

S

outh Florida is known for having several LGBTQ non-profit and advocacy groups. Well, did you know there is a specific organization that focuses especially on the rapidly-growing local Latino community? For the past ten years, Latinos Salud has created a safe and inclusive space for Latino men, their partners, those who are transgender, and anyone who is living with HIV+. The agency provides services for everyone who wishes to learn more about staying healthy, or wants to find friends, support, and resources. The organization’s diverse staff hails from across the world, including Chile, Costa Rica, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Honduras, Mexico, Peru, Puerto Rico, Spain, and Venezuela. Each of Latinos Salud’s staff are gay, bilingual, certified counselors who guide members to stay safe from HIV, or live a healthier life with HIV. I had the pleasure of chatting more with Latinos Salud’s executive director, Dr. Stephen Fallon, and co-founder Rafaelé Narváez. For more information, visit www.LatinosSalud.org. For those who are not familiar with Latinos Salud, what exactly is it? Latinos Salud is a community-based organization committed to helping people stay safe from, or live healthier with HIV. This focus is so important because the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) just reported there are only two groups in the U.S. for which new HIV cases are increasing: gay men and Latinos. While some of our programs are reserved specifically for gay Latinos, most are not. We also serve all guys living with HIV, and anyone who identifies as transgender. And we provide free testing services to everyone. We sometimes put it this way: our name is Latinos Salud, not Latinos only Salud. Fabulous. Can you talk a bit more about some of the major programs you offer? We have free walk-in services Monday through Friday from 11:00AM to 9:00PM, including HIV rapid testing, STD screening, linkage-to-care for persons living with HIV, PrEP navigation and enrollment, one-on-one client centered risk reduction using our homegrown DiversiSAFE OutClique.com | 29

approach, case management (currently available in Broward only), one-on-one life coaching for guys with HIV, social events for gay Latinos age 30 and under, a peer leadership course for gay Latinos of all ages, support groups in both counties for everyone living with or affected by HIV, condom delivery to gatekeeper businesses, and occasional community building events, like our Hispanic Heritage Food Bazaar this month. (Join us Saturday, November 10, 2018 at 6:00PM at ArtServe, for food, music and fun!) How long has Latinos Salud been around? We opened for services in January of 2009 in Wilton Manors, added a Miami Beach location in 2014, and added our Southwest location in 2016. The Southwest location was just upgraded to our new space in Westchester. How long have you been the executive director, and were you involved with the organization before then? I had helped agencies in 42 states set up and fund their health programs, including a Broward agency that had asked for help securing government contracts. Rafaelé Narváez, our Director of Health Programs, co-founded Latinos Salud with me when that other local agency decided to drop its HIV prevention programs for Latinos. Initially, our goal was just to restore the abandoned programs. After that, Latinos Salud grew year by year, in response to community requests for additional services. Our other senior staff member, Johnathan Medina, has been with us since the beginning, serving on our founding Board of Directors for two years before coming on staff as our MiamiDade Health Program Manager in late 2010. How beneficial do you think Latinos Salud has been to others? We have created a safe space where guys who might feel they don’t fit in can come find community and resources. Many of our members refer to Latinos Salud as their second home, their casita. Because people come to us who would never feel comfortable disclosing their sexuality to their physician or clinic, each year we also diagnose many clients who had 30 | OutClique.com

no idea they were living with HIV. We also have re-engaged many guys living with HIV who had fallen out of care because they didn’t know that here in the U.S. we have programs to help them stay in care even if they change jobs or move. When guys are consistently engaged in care, they usually bring their virus under control to the level we call undetectable. Getting their virus down to these levels interrupts the damage HIV would otherwise have wreaked on their immune system. These outcomes are so important, because today guys can live for nearly half a century with HIV, but here in South Florida, HIV+ gay Latinos live an average of eight years. By helping them to understand and stay in care, we look forward to seeing our clients live the full lives they deserve. Not only does this help our clients living with HIV, but it also benefits the community overall. Guys who are living with HIV who also maintain an undetectable viral load have too little HIV in their system for it to “leak out” during sex. In plain language, they become non-contagious, even if a condom is overlooked, and even if a partner isn’t on PrEP. There are many people who are scared that this exciting news must somehow be a trick or a mistake, but several studies (like Opposites Attract and PARTNER), have now tracked nearly 100,000 acts of condomless sex between partners of different HIV statuses, where the HIV+ partner had an undetectable viral load, and there has not been a single linked infection. Some HIV-negative guys in the study did become infected, but not by their partner. Genetic analysis showed that they became infected by someone else whose HIV was not under control. It sounds like Latinos Salud has helped a lot of people. We provide HIV and STD screening to nearly 5,000 people each year. We perform broad scale outreach and condom distribution to another 30,000 people each year. We also have deep impact programs, like our life coaching and case management services, that help a few hundred people a year. 32 | OutClique.com

What is the ultimate goal? Our vision is to create a safe and inclusive space that breaks down the barriers which contribute to health disparities, especially amongst South Florida’s gay and bisexual Latinos, and all persons living with HIV. Latinos Salud is already a great success, but what do you hope to do to make it continuously better? Like that old car rental commercial, I often say, “We’re #2, so we try harder.” As a relatively young non-profit, with its budget spread over three far flung locations, we have to make every dollar count. Our grant funders at all levels know that they can count on us to go beyond promises and good intentions, to actually deliver consistent outcomes. The CDC rated our efforts fourth in the nation last year, and our staff have since developed systems that funders have adopted for future grantees. Because of this, we have been very fortunate to grow the Latinos Salud each year with our grants. However, our success is not guaranteed, and we face one huge challenge: we receive very little financial support from the community. There’s a huge philanthropic community in South Florida that supports dozens of other LGBTQ non-profits, but for some reason, has not supported Latinos Salud. And what private support we do receive is almost all from Broward community members. Four years into providing what now totals $1 million worth of free services in Miami-Dade each year, we receive fewer than a dozen donations of $100 or more from Miami-Dade community members annually. That’s not sustainable.

What would you say has been the organization’s biggest accomplishment so far? There have been so many changes in HIV prevention and treatment options. Agencies and health departments have all tried to raise awareness and make information understandable and relevant to their community members. We invented the “DiversiSAFE” approach to bust through myths and empower each community member, HIV+ and HIV-, to take control of their health. While we offer this free counseling one-on-one each day, we have also staged some fun and memorable large events to mobilize the community. These DiversiSAFE town halls have been the largest of their kind in the country, delivering life-saving information to up to 500 people at each event. For anyone who would like to be involved with Latinos Salud, what should they do? If you need services, just walk into any of our locations. We are not the sort of place with rows of plastic chairs or a sterile waiting room. Step in our “living room,” and let us know what you need. If you are a giving person, please also ask yourself, why not Latinos Salud? Many amazing community members give to groups that represent backgrounds very different from their own. We would like to invite you to invest in your community. What is in store for the future? What’s next for Latinos Salud? We will be holding our tenth Anniversary Gala late January or early February. This will be a gala fundraiser, with lots of wow factors! And our Hispanic Heritage Food Bazaar will take place on Saturday, November 10, 2018. OutClique.com | 33

KOZ FOR CELEBRATION

AN INTERVIEW WITH GAY JAZZ MUSICIAN DAVE KOZ

By Gregg Shapiro

F

or more than 20 years, gay saxophone player and songwriter Dave Koz has been taking his annual Christmas tour on the road. Regularly joined by other members of the smooth jazz world, including pianist David Benoit, Koz’s annual holiday concert is something his fans, far and wide, look forward to every year. Known for his distinctive saxophone skills, Koz has expanded his repertoire in recent years, including playing sax on the song “La Dee Da” from the Foo Fighters’ 2017 Concrete and Gold album. Now a full-fledged silver daddy, Koz took time out of his busy tour schedule to answer a few questions. Gregg Shapiro: Do you remember the first winter holiday song that you can recall hearing from your childhood? Dave Koz: [Laughs] The very first one, I’m not so sure. But the first thing that pops into my mind is “White Christmas.” It would have probably been the first one that I heard. Still to

34 | OutClique.com

this day, it’s my favorite Christmas song. When I hear that song, there’s something about the melody and the lyric and the nostalgic aspect of it that always gets me.

GS DK

What was the first Christmas song you learned to play on saxophone?

Probably “Winter Wonderland.” That’s going back so far. And I have the worst memory [laughs]. I do remember that “Winter Wonderland” was the first Christmas song that I recorded, back to the very beginning of my career. I was asked to make a Christmas song for a special collaboration project. That was the one that I chose. I’ve had a connection to that song for a very long time.

GS

Did you have a Christmas tree and a menorah in your home when you were growing up?

DK

No Christmas tree because we were a Jewish family. We always

celebrated Chanukah in my house. My parents, God bless them, were good about continuing that tradition, even when we grew up with my brother and sister having kids. But I used to go to friends’ houses because I loved the whole trimming of the tree and things associated with Christmas; the music, the lights, the family dinners. I was always intrigued by that. That’s where I got a lot of my experience with the Christmas feeling that we put in our shows all these years later.

“Why don’t we go out (on tour) and make some music for our parents. Hopefully inspire some people along the way.” I said it was a great idea. We went out and it was a very small and short tour. I think we had six or seven shows. But they were great and heartfelt. The audience that did come really loved it. We got invited back the next year and the year after that and the next thing you know, here we are 21 years of a Christmas tour.

GS

GS

DK

DK

You have also written an original song for Chanukah (“Eight Candles”). Do you have plans to write another?

That’s the nice thing, because of my Jewish background, there’s a lot less Chanukah music. It’s maybe easier to write a Chanukah song that has the potential to stick around a little while longer. That song, “Eight Candles,” we play it every year in our Christmas show and there are people who are not Jewish who come up to me after the show and say, “That’s my favorite song. Thank you for playing it. That’s what we come here to hear.” It’s pretty funny how “Eight Candles” has grown in popularity over the years.

GS DK

They’re timeless songs.

Yes! (As) modern songwriters, we try as best as we can to live up to those wild expectations of what it means to be a great songwriter. It’s not easy to do, let me tell you.

GS

Your Christmas show has become an annual event. Did you know after performing it the first time more than 20 years ago that it would be a yearly occurrence?

DK

No. The first time we did it was the year my dad passed away, 1997. It was the same year that musician David Benoit, who is a great friend of mine, his mom passed away. We were commiserating, talking about everything, feeling bad about losing our parents. It was his idea, actually. He said, 36 | OutClique.com

In addition to your yearly Christmas tour, you do an annual Summer Horns tour, as well. Are summer and winter your favorite seasons?

They turn out to be the seasons that we travel a lot. I’ve been on tour all over the United States. It’s been incredible. So much fun. Winter can be daunting in that we have something like 26 or 27 shows in 31 days. It’s a lot of travel and a lot of stress on the body. But there’s nothing better than being in front of people who are excited to celebrate the holidays every year. The energy that we need comes from the audience who, night after night, show up ready to have a good time and fill us up with good feelings. That propels us to the next show and those people propel us to the next show. Even though we may be dead tired, we’re very inspired and filled with positivity because of the audiences we’re playing for. It’s the most beautiful thing, buddy! I’ve watched kids come with their parents and now those kids are grown up and they bring their kids to our show. That doesn’t happen very often. That you can have something that’s been around this long that you see generations growing up right before your eyes. That’s very special for me.

GS DK

Finally, is there a new Dave Koz album in the works?

We just released our Summer Horns album (Summer Horns II: From A to Z) which is number one as we speak. I’m going to start working on a new album probably after the first of the year.

SYMPHONY OF SOUTH FLORIDA WELCOMES Violinist Angelo Xiang Yu By Denny Patterson

W

inner of the prestigious Yehudi Menuhin International Violin Competition in 2010, violinist Angelo Xiang Yu is excited and eager to perform with the South Florida Symphony Orchestra (SFSO) for its season opener. The Master Work Series I is scheduled for November 2829 and December 1, 2018, and audiences are invited to watch Yu perform the magnificent works of Beethoven. Yu brings an astonishing technique, exquisite tone, and exceptional musical maturity to this revered concerto.

Tell me a about your upcoming performance with the SFSO. This is my first time performing with this orchestra and also with this conductor, so I am very excited and eager to perform with them. There will be a couple of performances and obviously each time will be a new experience. This concerto is considered to be the most difficult for violin and it’s one I never get tired of. It’s so beautiful, I can listen to it again and again, and it’s probably also the longest concert that has been written for violin. So, with all the challenges and excitement, I am very looking forward to it. Fabulous. I hear Maestra Sebrina Alfonso is wonderful to work with. Yes, I have heard the same thing. I am very excited to meet her in person finally. You are going to perform Beethoven numbers with the orchestra. Has Beethoven always been a major musical inspiration to you? Yes. I think if you are a classical musician, you always relate to Beethoven at some point in your life. In my opinion, he is the one composer I look up to the most. You can never really get tired of his music. Even though I have played the same piece over a hundred times, I can always discover new things every time I perform it. That’s the beauty of Beethoven.

Photos by Kate Lemmon

Where did your passion for playing the violin come from? How did it all begin? When I was little, about 2-3 years old, normally you would not expect a child at that age to speak very fluently. I could sing very well after hearing a song on the radio. I could repeat it immediately and my parents thought that I was very musical and talented. I could also tell the difference in pitches. So, my parents brought me to a music teacher and my teacher said that I have very good hands. My fingers are great for musicians and that I should be a pianist. My parents thought buying a piano would be too expensive but saw a violin above the piano that was small. Because it was small, they thought they could afford that and start me out with the violin. I think they made the right choice because I can express myself without boundaries through the violin. It’s like my human voice. what do you personally hope to take away from this experience, performing with the SFSO? Every performance is unique. I am hoping to discover even more about Beethoven’s “Concerto.” It is something that I want to perform throughout my life if possible. If I need to go to a desert and can only bring one piece, it would be this “Concerto.” I am very lucky and feel very honored to be able to perform this piece with the SFSO.

MIAMI NATIVE, DOMINIQUE SCOTT, RETURNS TO SOUTH FLORIDA TO HEADLINE IN

HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH By Mike Jeknavorian

I

n a joint production by the Broward Center and the Slow Burn Theatre Company, Hedwig will run from November 8-25, 2018 and will star Dominique Scott in the title role. I sat down with “Mr.” Hedwig himself to discuss his career and to hear his insight about the popular musical. MIKE JEKNAVORIAN: You have two different last names: Dominique Stasiulis and Dominique Scott. Is the “Scott” name a different persona, similar to how Bowie had different title/ characters? DOMINIQUE SCOTT: You caught me! Stasiulis is my real last name. It’s a mouthful to say, and I had one too many people struggle to say it during my childhood, including members of my own family sometimes [laughs]. Professionally, everyone knows me as Dom Scott, or Dominique Scott. But yeah, no persona or character in that sense. Dom Scott is just what I decided to go by.

originally from Miami. What do MJ You’re you miss about it? I miss my sister and my parents, for DS sure. Oh, and Pollo Tropical. You’d be surprised how hard it is to find a good rice and beans in New York! But, yeah, I love Miami. I would never live there anymore, but anyone who has followed my career knows how incredibly proud I am to call Miami my hometown.

You live in New York City. What’s MJ something that’s unique about New York that most people don’t know about? The MTA (Metropolitan Transportation DS Authority). The biggest bane of my existence. On a lighter note, New York is super diverse. That’s one of the things I was proud about Miami. It’s such a melting pot, so it was nice to experience a similar thing in New York.

you see any of the New York MJ Didproductions of Hedwig?

I saw the Broadway revival. I actually DS saw John Cameron Mitchell in it. My friend, Ethan Popp, did the arrangements. I think that he did an incredible job. The band was on fire, and the sound design was really fantastic. I loved all of the technical elements of it.

the Hedwig character remind MJ Does you of anyone? [Laughs] Well, not really one person in DS particular, but definitely a kaleidoscope of people and influences from my life. Although it’s funny, I told my cousin the other day that I often think of my late grandmother when I’m playing Hedwig. She wasn’t at all like Hedwig, but for some strange reason, I imagine some world in which she could be.

finally, what will you do with your MJ And downtime when you’re in South Florida? DS

Well, my cousin and I, who’s playing Bass in Hedwig, started this music brand called Hollow Spirit Studios. It’s a platform where we create and release incredible work for ourselves and other artists. Proceeds from many of the items are going to a local charity, which we’re really proud about. Most importantly, I’m excited to meet new fans after the shows at the booth. That’s my favorite part of my career; connecting with people. I’ve always felt that way. And of course, gym time, basketball time, and as much family time as we can squeeze in!

THE SOUTH FLORIDA PRIDE WIND ENSEMBLE PRESENTS

ANGELS AND DEMONS By Denny Patterson

F

or the past 33 years, the South Florida Pride Wind Ensemble has been providing top-notch performances to the LGBTQ and straight-friendly communities. With over 60 talented and passionate musicians, the ensemble is kicking off its 2018-2019 season with Angels and Demons, a concert where audiences will experience a whirlwind of emotions as they listen to music that represents these two aspects of humanity. From Verdi’s “Manzoni Requiem” to “The Imperial March” from Star Wars, it’s the ageold battle of good versus evil. The concert is on Sunday, November 11 at 7:00PM at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts’ Amaturo Theatre. I had the pleasure of chatting more about the upcoming concert with the ensemble’s artistic director, Dan Bassett.

First off, can you please give me a bit of history about the Pride Wind Ensemble? Who was the founder, and how did it all begin? In 1986, Mort Jonas and Bruce Freeman decided to form a musical group for the gay and lesbian community in South Florida. Jonas had recently returned from a vacation in San Francisco where he had connected with an organization called the Lesbian and Gay Band Association (LGBA) that was performing at the Gay Games. Freeman had just moved to Fort Lauderdale from Washington D.C. where he had been a founding member of the DC’s Different Drummers, one of the more established gay bands in the country. The ensemble began with just eight members who rehearsed in a member’s living room. It has since grown to over 60 regular members. How has the Pride Wind Ensemble personally impacted your life? When I first joined the ensemble I had just moved to South Florida, so this group gave me an opportunity to meet people and make 42 | OutClique.com

friends that I’ve had for many years. Since becoming artistic director, it has been a joy to help the ensemble grow both in numbers and musically. Since I am no longer in music education for children, as I have moved into school administration, the ensemble gives me a way to express myself musically that I do not get elsewhere. What can audiences expect at the upcoming Angels and Demons concert? The audience can expect to be thoroughly entertained. In addition to a high-quality music performance, they will also be entertained by a guest vocalist, dancers, several specially created videos, and some other fun surprises. What do you hope audiences will take away from this performance? I hope that the audience leaves the performance wanting to hear more from the ensemble and a sense that amongst all the political turmoil in today’s society, humanity’s good will prevail in the end.

What do you hope ensemble members take away from this performance? I hope the ensemble members have a great time entertaining our audience and feel that they have been stretched musically through playing some challenging music. What do you look for in a good audience? Our audiences are always amazing. All I hope for is that they enjoyed the performance and come to our future performances. How beneficial has the Pride Wind Ensemble been to the South Florida community? Since its inception, the Pride Wind Ensemble has been performing in Pride events and parades, performing concerts, and supporting other local organizations. Additionally, seven years ago, we began the South Florida Youth Pride Band which allows high school students to perform with an amazing guest conductor in a safe space free of judgment and bullying. In that time, we have given away $86,000 in college scholarships to participating members. The Pride Wind Ensemble is already a great success, but what do you hope to do to make it continuously better? My plan is to continuously push the musicians of the ensemble musically to perform difficult

and expressive pieces of music. As always, we are seeking new members to grow the ensemble and to reach a larger audience. What’s next for the Pride Wind Ensemble? What are some upcoming concerts we should be on the lookout for? On December 9, several small ensembles from the larger group will perform at Art Serve at 3:00PM, on February 24, our Youth Pride Band will perform at 7:00PM at the Broward Center and on June 8, the Wind Ensemble will team up with the Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida for a Broadway concert. How can one become a member of the Pride Wind Ensemble? Any musician that plays a band instrument is welcome to join the ensemble. We rehearse on Wednesday evenings at 7:00PM at St. Mark’s Episcopal School in Fort Lauderdale. What advice would you give to someone who wishes to join a musical group like the Pride Wind Ensemble? I would highly recommend that anyone interested in joining a musical group in South Florida should do it. Not only will they find themselves musically challenged and fulfilled but will also very likely meet lifelong friends.

Tickets are available at BrowardCenter.org or by calling the Box Office at (800) 745-3000. For more information about the Pride Wind Ensemble and upcoming performances, visit PrideWindEnsemble.org. 44 | OutClique.com

POMPANO BILL

A SOUTH FLORIDA ICON, TREASURE, AND FRIEND By Steven O. Evans, PhD

I first met Pompano Bill around 15 years ago during one of my first trips to Fort Lauderdale. My boyfriend (at the time) and I were staying at one of the gay resorts down on the beach. They were having an event, and Bill was there with his camera. His usual flirty self, he was taking photos of everyone, smiling, and making the boys all feel right at home Yes, Pompano Bill will always be known for the thousands of photos that he took. He told me once that he had taken, to no surprise, hundreds of thousands of images. Of course, he could even tell about the days of film cameras before digital. His photos both online and in print were just like Bill himself, a South Florida legend.. But beyond the photos, was Bill the person. He would often send me a personal email with a photo he had taken of me out and about,

because he remembered who I was. He always had a kind word about the photos I took and about my magazine. He was a kind, gentle, and giving soul. I am grateful to have known him as a colleague, but more importantly, as my friend. Bill, you are missed and will always be cherished.

POMPANO BILL REMEMBERED By Tony Adams

Some photographers express ego, their own and that of the subject. But Pompano Bill Calcaterra’s benevolent camera always celebrated and enjoyed the legions of us who were lucky enough to capture his attention. Some paparazzi make us nervous because their motivation is not necessarily kind, resulting in a photo that might make us flinch. Not so with Pompano Bill, who did not simply cover an event, but became part of it, making it more fun and enjoyable with his easy smile and the gentle mischief in his eyes. He lit up a room without ever needing a flash bulb. And yes, he was old enough to remember flash bulbs. I once asked him if he intended to cover an event a week away. He said he wasn’t sure, and he added, “You know, I never buy green bananas.” 50 | OutClique.com

Pompano Bill was to Fort Lauderdale what Bill Cunningham was to Manhattan. Both men seemed instinctively compelled to record the people around them. Both seemed to be saying, “Aren’t these folks wonderful!” In the process of creating thousands of candid and sometimes posed images, both men inadvertently created an irreplaceable history of their respective communities. They were both in love with their subjects. In addition to my admiration for his work, Pompano Bill was, for me, the personification of how to “do” Fort Lauderdale. Pompano Bill chose a creative life that was productive and full of fun. He was a role model for all of us of a certain age and passing on those green bananas.

INAPPROPRIATE, YET HILARIOUS YOUTUBER BRANDON ROGERS By Denny Patterson

Y

ou may not know Brandon Rogers by name, but you will surely recognize his YouTube videos. Known for sketches, vlogs, and web series that are often considered to be crass and offensive, the dark humor is what draws in audiences. Brandon’s YouTube channel has over 4.2 million subscribers and 600 million views. His videos have been shared via Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, anywhere you can think of. Some of his most notable characters include a cantankerous and slightly dimwitted Grandpa, a detention teacher known as Hall Monitor Helen, a dysfunctional mother of three children, a blind fashion designer named Jurgen Klausvonschwitz, a CEO named Bryce Tankthrust and a feminine straight man named Sam who lives with his blunt roommate, Donna. Brandon’s characters have gained him fame, and he is bringing some of these beloved people to Fort Lauderdale, FL. I had the pleasure of chatting more with Brandon about his upcoming performance and his videos. Welcome to Fort Lauderdale! What can audiences expect from your live performance? It’s kind of a variety show of comedy. It’s partly stand up, it’s partly character work. We show various elements of what it takes to put together one of our videos and we structure it like a seminar. Here is what it’s like to be a YouTuber. The show gets sidetracked a lot, like most of our videos. We usually spiral into something disgusting and blood covered. What first got you into making videos and posting on YouTube? When I was in high school, before the age of YouTube, I use to make videos on a VHS camera and show them to my friends every week in a classroom at lunchtime. We did it every week. We would shoot these horrible

and very inappropriate comedy sketches and we would screen them for each other and for ourselves. When YouTube came out in 2005, I was about a senior in high school at the time, and I remember thinking, “Oh my gosh, this is a place where we can archive all our stuff.” So, we started making videos for YouTube and I just got hooked on it. I was doing it for ten years before the channel blew up. YouTube has always been a platform for me to be able to put these sick ideas into reality and spread them across the planet. So, yeah, that’s what got me started making skits. You play a wide variety of characters. Which one would you say has been your favorite and why? Any of the characters who aren’t getting their own way. They are very successful and happy. When I play a character who is happy in their own skin, I am happier. I play a lot of characters who are cynical and upset and those are not as much fun to play. I really like playing the CEO, Bryce Tankthrust. She is a power mogul who oversees any corporate entity that exists in my video world. She is just a confident soul in so many ways. It is fun to live in the shoes of other people, so I like to try and design characters who I would vicariously like to live as. What would you like to tell your South Florida fans? I am very excited to see you all. Every time we come to Florida, it’s a great time and I feel the love. I am very much looking forward to coming to perform. I haven’t been to Fort Lauderdale in about ten years, so I am excited to come back. The show is a lot of fun and I think you all will really enjoy it. Hopefully, it’s a nice little follow up from your Thanksgiving. I want you all well fed, feeling good, and in need of a few laughs!

Brandon Rogers will be performing at Broward Center for the Performing Arts for a one day only engagement on Sunday, November 25, 2018 at 2:00PM. For more information and tickets, visit www.BrowardCenter.org.

THE PERRY HOTEL

A NEW LOOK TO THE KEY WEST DESTINATION By Steven O. Evans, PhD

W

hat images come to mind when someone says, “Key West?” Historic homes? A stroll down Duval Street? Seeing the sunset on Mallory Square? Hanging with the boys at the clubs? Welcome a new vision and a new setting to this beautiful landscape of Florida - the Perry Hotel. Built on Stock Island, just a few steps from Key West, this majestic property is one that was designed with every detail in mind. When you enter the Perry, you’ll first notice it’s blend of Florida resort and New York City loft, while incorporating their nautical theme. With its exposed concrete, textured leathers, steel accents, and weathered wood tones, guests are given the luxury treatment. Want to feel relaxed? Swim in the resort’s large, heated pool that is directly off the

adjacent marina. Poolside rooms open right to the area. Private cabanas offer that extra touch of comfort. Want to chill and get away? Eat and drink at the open air Salty Oyster Dockside Bar & Grill. My last few visits, I sat for several hours and enjoyed the view of the marina, pool, and resort, while trying their numerous cocktails. The Perry Punch and the Watermelon Jalapeño Margarita are my new favorites. Also onsite, Matt’s Stock Island Kitchen & Bar offers dockside upscale but casual dining. I’m southern, so the Fried Chicken is my menu favorite. Each room is spacious with nautical decor. Many rooms overlook and offer views of the marina and pool area. Want to treat yourself? Book one of the corner suites with wraparound balconies.

The Perry Hotel on Stock Island offers a luxurious stay for those vacationing in Key West. Free parking and shuttle service are available. Check out www.PerryKeyWest.com or call (305) 296-1717 for more information. 64 | OutClique.com

THEY WILL ROCK YOU

AN INTERVIEW WITH BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY STARS RAMI MALEK, JOSEPH MAZZELLO, AND GWILYM LEE By Gregg Shapiro

F

irst things first, for all of those concerned about the way that Freddie Mercury’s homosexuality is depicted in the Bryan Singer’s Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody, you can relax. From the minute you first see Mercury, played brilliantly by Rami Malek (complete with prosthetic teeth), there is no doubt that the king of Queen was, in fact, a queen. Yes, his relationship with “fiancée” Mary Austin (Lucy Boynton) gets a fair amount of screen time. But, so do his same-sex attractions, from being cruised by a trucker outside of a men’s room to his relationships with manager Paul (Allen Leech) and later his lover Jim (Aaron McCusker).

Now that that’s settled, it’s safe to say that, as biopics go, Bohemian Rhapsody does a respectable job of telling both Mercury’s story and giving the audience insight into the history of the band itself. The backstory of “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “We Will Rock You” are worth the price of admission alone. I had the honor of speaking to Malek, as well as Joseph Mazzello and Gwylim Lee (who play Queen band members John Deacon and Brian May, respectively) while they were in Miami shortly before the movie opened in theaters in November 2018. Gregg Shapiro: What is your favorite Queen song and album? Joseph Mazzello: “Somebody To Love” is my all-time favorite, and this is a boring answer, but A Night at the Opera is such a masterpiece that, all told, I’d have to say it’s my favorite album. Gwilym Lee: Yeah, probably the same. But I really like Queen I, the first album, just because you hear them working out who they really are. 72 | OutClique.com

Photos by Alex Bailey You hear them as a really young, slightly naïve band that sounds a lot like other bands of that time because they’re still trying to find their unique sound. There’s a lot of Led Zeppelin influence. But there’s something quite pure about it as a rock band. Rami Malek: As an album cover, maybe to flip this a little bit, I like News of the World.

GS RM

What do you think Freddie Mercury would think of Bohemian Rhapsody?

It’s hard enough emulating him in any way or trying to fill those shoes. It took me quite a while to come close in this film. To begin to ponder what this man was thinking. Ultimately, I think what the film does really well, it doesn’t spend too much time going into the darker places, the illicit places. We do that just so we can show just how grand and big his life was.

RAINBOW BRIGHT

AN INTERVIEW WITH RANDY RAINBOW

By Gregg Shapiro

W

ith millions of Facebook views to his name, Randy Rainbow is a certified social media sensation. His original musical video parodies, which have gained considerable attention before and after the 2016 Presidential election, have become the stuff of legend. Watched, shared, and tweeted by gay and straight folks alike, Rainbow’s wicked sense of humor and polished performance skills have made him a household name. I recently had the pleasure of speaking with him about his career and meteoric rise. Gregg Shapiro: Randy, I’d like to begin by asking you to say something about your background and performance training. Randy Rainbow: I’ve been on the stage since I was a kid. I started with ballet when I was six. I have a musical theater background; a lot of theater camp as a child, a lot of community, regional theater. I dropped out of college and worked on a cruise ship for a time. (My background is) primarily in musical theater, and mostly in South Florida.

you work with a creative team or are you strictly a one-man-operation?

RR

I’m very much a one-man-band [laughs]. It’s all out of my little studio apartment here in New York. There’s a green screen that takes up my entire living room. I write it and perform it with my cat sitting on the bed watching me. Then I edit everything myself.

GS RR

What is your most popular video to date?

As far as numbers, it’s still the “Braggadocious” video which has 31 million views. They’re all doing a good 10 million now. The last few I’ve put out are around 10 million and over.

GS

If you don’t my mind my asking, what is your current romantic status – are you single, partnered, or married? Ugh, now I’m depressed. I wasn’t sad, but now I am.

RR

RR GS RR

I just know there’s someone out there for you.

GS

In what ways, if any, does being a South Florida-native come across in your work?

I got some really great training there. I spent most of my childhood at the Hollywood Playhouse, all of my summers growing up. Josh Gad and I, who you probably know (from The Book of Mormon and Frozen) were buddies back then. I did a lot of children’s theater in Miami Shores. My base musical theater training happened there. Your videos have remarkably sophisticated production values. Do

But, Randy, everybody wants to know.

I am single as [can be]. If anyone’s looking, let me know. You know my email, put it up there [laughs]. I’m telling myself I’m focusing on my career, which is what everyone says when they’re not dating.

I hope so!

ICONIC CADILLAC HOTEL & BEACH CLUB THE NEW DARLING OF MIAMI BEACH By Steve Pike

Photo courtesy of Cadillac Hotel & Beach Club

On Miami Beach, everything that is old is new again. That’s particularly true for hotels, the latest example being the Cadillac Hotel & Beach Club in Miami Beach, which opened this past spring after a multi-million-dollar renovation. A South Florida icon for more than 70 years, the oceanfront resort is located in the heart of Miami Beach’s mid beach at 39th and Collins Avenue. Originally designed by renowned Art Deco architect Roy France in 1940, Cadillac Hotel & Beach Club overlooks the Atlantic Ocean with beach and city views. The “new’’ Cadillac Hotel & Beach Club features 357 guest rooms, as well as two distinct dining outlets, two pools (adults-only and family pool) and beachside service. “We’re getting great reviews,’’ said general manager Karan Kakar. “Our focus is on great product, but great product without great service doesn’t make sense. The personalization that the guests are getting is phenomenal. There is a lot of engagement between our staff and guests.’’

The Cadillac Hotel & Beach Club is part of Marriott International’s Autograph Collection Hotels, a diverse portfolio of more than 135 independent hotels around the world. At the heart of the hotel, the lobby has kept its classic signatures with original terrazzo floors, lush greenery and a wraparound mezzanine balcony overlooking the check-in and lounge area. Just beyond the hotel lobby, guests will find The Lobby Bar and Riviera, a flexible use public and meeting space, leading to a grand terrace overlooking the pool deck. Cadillac Hotel & Beach Club’s main pool leads to the beachside bungalow restaurant and bar area where guests and locals have access to a wide range of craft cocktails, rosé and European wines, as well as a fresh raw bar and light fare including simply grilled fish and salads. Inside, the Cadillac Hotel & Beach Club features a locally-sourced, authentic trattoria featuring a wood-fired oven where Neapolitan pizza, homemade pasta, simply-grilled wild fish and grass-fed meats are prepared.

HOW TO LOVE YOUR NEW CAR AND THE PROCESS TO BUY IT

Rod Davis President BBB Serving Southeast FL and the Caribbean

W

hen it comes to buying a car, some people like the challenge, but most people do not. According to a 2016 Harris Poll, 61% of people feel taken advantage of when buying a new car. So today I want to share information with you to simplify the process and help you feel empowered to take control of the car buying process. CHOOSE A CAR MODEL Check out various models to determine those that provide the look, features and other priorities that are most important to you. As an example, I wanted a car that was fuel efficient, reliable, sits high (e.g. a crossover), and, of course, looked good to me. Research and think about the equipment and options the car offers, the safety features you want, the conditions you will be driving in, and any other needs you have in mind for yourself or your family. Consult resources like Consumer Reports. It is best to identify a couple of options since you may not like how one or two

options feel when you drive and to maximize your bargaining power. HOW TO PURCHASE The next thing to do is decide whether to purchase or lease a vehicle. As a general rule, if you put lots of miles on your car or if you have problems avoiding the dings and dents on a new car, leasing may not be the best option for you since most leases have mileage limitations or impose significant fees for any damage beyond normal wear and tear. Additionally, some people just prefer to purchase a vehicle with the goal of paying off the loan and having a vehicle for a few years without payments. Leasing a vehicle can appeal to individuals who like to drive a vehicle they might not be able to purchase. You can generally get more car for less money on a lease like driving a Mercedes-Benz or similar car. Some people also like the ability to stay in a relatively new OutClique.com | 93

car and leasing permits customers to cycle through to new cars at the end of the lease term. Most new car dealers will have incentives and financing options. You can check out current options at: www.edmunds.com/carincentives/. You should also talk to your bank to see what financing deals they can provide to you. Bankrate.com also helps you obtain financing options: bankrate.com/loans/autoloans/current-auto-loan-interest-rates/ Doing your research before stepping into a dealership will enable you to be a more confident consumer. Once you step into the dealership you will know what you can afford and that you will have a good rate if you decide to finance your new car. GETTING YOUR PRICE The internet provides some great tools to help consumers find and negotiate a price. Both TrueCar and Edmunds provide tools on their websites to help you search for the car(s) you are seeking to purchase and to lock in the price at a designated dealership. If you don’t enjoy negotiating in the dealership, you will appreciate these options.

Here are some things to do during your visit to the dealership: Take your time. If you don’t want to make a decision on your first visit, tell the dealer upfront. Let them know you want to take a test drive and will be making your decision on a purchase later. Go on a test drive. This is one of the most important things to do! Drive each model you are considering and try to do so in a variety of conditions (driving through traffic, on a highway, and on back roads). Take a test drive checklist with you to examine important characteristics of the car and check out all of the features. While driving, carefully check the brakes, steering, outward visibility, and gear shifting. Don’t be afraid to ask questions.

Whether you use TrueCar, Edmunds, or another service to identify a vehicle to test drive, you should do a check on the dealership you are considering. Check out the BBB report on each dealership to see if they have a good record with consumers. Read their reviews and complaints and whether they are BBB Accredited so you will know if the dealership deserves your business and can be trusted.

Determine the price for the car. If you have not obtained a price quote before getting to the dealer, here is some additional guidance as you negotiate a price. The MSRP (manufacturer's suggested retail price) sticker price taped to the car window is the amount the dealer is seeking and may be about 10-15% more than what the dealer paid for the car. Tell the salesperson exactly what car and options you would like, and ask for the best price. The invoice price is a target for you in your negotiation. In some cases, the dealer will receive additional funds from the manufacturer above the invoice price upon sale of the vehicle. Use the information from Edmunds and other sites to set your target price. You may be less likely to get a good price on a more popular car that is in short supply. If you have done your research in advance you will be in a much stronger position to negotiate and to know if you have a good deal.

AT THE DEALERSHIP Take control of the relationship with the dealership. If you have pre-selected your vehicle and obtained a price, make sure you print out the documentation to take with you. Remember that an ethical auto dealer will let you take the time you need to make a conscious and thought-out decision. If someone is rushing you and putting pressure on you, you may not want to do business with them.

WRAPPING UP THE DEAL At the time of the purchase, make sure you take with you the bill of sale, purchase agreement, loan agreement, and registration papers. Make sure all guarantees, warranties, or service contracts are in writing and that you understand them. If there is a deposit due at signing, ask whether it is refundable, and under what circumstances, and be sure that is spelled out in the contract. Double check all fees and terms before you sign.

CHOICES

By Eric Noel Roman

"What is that incessant noise? Loud, obnoxious, and has broken my deep sleep. Oh, the alarm clock. Well, here is the first choice of the day." To snooze or not to snooze? Every day people are given choices. Depending on which decision is made, it can dictate mood, motivation, and future options. Hit the snooze button to get a few minutes of extra sleep or, get up and start the day fully productive. Choose the best option once and the second choice is equally easy. Which will be the better of the two. Think about it for a second. If waking up and getting the day started is a strong start, then instead of the unhealthy breakfast, it is easier to reach for the healthy meal. Next, follow up with a morning exercise routine, and boom, the day is rolling in the green. Throughout the day options are presented. On occasion we stray from our goals and are counter productive. Maybe instead of having a healthy snack, like a fruit or vegetable, we indulge and have a bacon cheese burger. It is ok. But, the next decision made will require more will power because the thought may be, "I already messed up." That thought process will lead to another poor choice. However, if the thought is to just jump back into the proper choices, no harm no foul. That mindset focuses on the positive outcome of all future variables. There is no focus on the poor choice. Each alternative is left to one experience at a time. After I elect to eat that burger, I proceed to go for a short run or cut out dessert after dinner. I know there will be another moment in the day to pick what is best. It is a scary thought to make a mistake. Mistakes need to happen. They are the process by which lessons are learned. Certain decisions become automatic. I remember when I was starting my journey of fitness and healthier eating. I would struggle to even get started. Going out for a run was always a mental argument. After some time, 96 | OutClique.com

my brain started to wake me up early and tell me, "Time to run, Eric." Finding the best meal alternatives has become automatic. I know now that if I eat poorly my body will punish me by slowing me down or giving me an upset stomach during training. In turn, I also know that I am not perfect, and I will give into that tasty Tiramisu or have that footlong hot dog. So if that decision is poor, it will not affect your next choice. There is no better time than the present to begin the journey to change. Start making better choices immediately. It does not matter what time of the day, day of the week, or week of the year. Also, age plays no role in improvement. It is all a mindset. An effective method that sets a path for better times ahead. Once the mindset of basing choices for the moment becomes habit, it becomes easier to forgive the past mistakes. Dwelling on that second slice of pizza or having the extra large slice of cake eventually becomes less of an issue. The following decision will not only be based on that moment, but they will also be based on a positive mindset.

WITH ONE BALLERINA FOOT AT A TIME

CHASE JOHNSEY DANCES HIS WAY TO EQUALITY FOR ALL

By Mike Jeknavorian

C

hase Johnsey, who grew up in Winter Haven, Florida, and trained at the Florida Dance Theatre in Polk Country, gave up an almost 15-year career with the Trockadero (an all-male drag ballet company in New York) in 2018 because of alleged discrimination. On the heels of his resignation, Johnsey made headlines when he was contracted by the English National Ballet for a role as a female ensemble member in Sleeping Beauty. With Johnsey’s role in Sleeping Beauty, he became the first male dancer to perform as part of a female ensemble for any international ballet company. However, his path to the role hasn’t been easy and already petite, Johnsey further reshaped his body by losing 20 pounds, and he had facial surgery to feminize his features. As Hollywood beckons with the possibility of a role in a major motion picture, Johnsey is currently filming a documentary with HBO about his journey. MIKE JEKNAVORIAN: You grew up in Winter Haven. What do you miss about it? CHASE JOHNSEY: I think more than anything, I miss my friends and family. However, I also always make time to go back to really remember where I came from. Going home and driving those very streets I came from always humbles me and makes me appreciative of how far that I’ve come.

MJ CJ

What do you like about South Florida?

I’ve spent lots of time in Miami and Fort Lauderdale. Of course, the nightlife is incredible there, but also there’s a rich dance scene there. I was honored to perform numerous times at the Arsht Center and The Fillmore Miami Beach. One of my most influential coaches was a former principal with the Miami City Ballet. Her name is Iliana 98 | OutClique.com

Lopez, and she now has a school in Naples, Florida. She was always so understanding of who I was and always encouraged me to be different.

MJ CJ MJ CJ

How do you identify? I identify more closely with being genderfluid. What initially drew you to ballet and dance?

I was dancing in front of the television to Billy Rae Cyrus's "Achy Breaky Heart," and my parents put me in dance. From there, I just never left it.

MJ

Your high school teachers discouraged you from pursuing ballet because you didn’t have the typical “heroic” physique.

Do you think that his or her discouragement only made you stronger, or was it a hindrance?

CJ

I have never been one to let other people set limitations on me. I did, however, know that if I wanted to be a ballet dancer, that the road wouldn't be an easy one. I knew that if I wanted to have a significant career, that I would need to go down a unique path. That’s why I chose Trockadero, because I knew I could be successful there. Now that the world has opened up, I have more options.

MJ

A ballerina requires equal strength as a man, but must cloak that strength within the confines of femininity. Considering this, do you think that it’s harder to dance female parts in ballet as opposed to the male ones?

CJ

For me, personally, I think the way that I move naturally I’m more suited to the female roles. However, it does come with a different set of challenges. To be feminine is to try not to be feminine. It’s how you approach the steps and all of the details that come with the work itself.

MJ

You said that you learned how to put on makeup because of the drag

100 | OutClique.com

community. Do you think that transgendered females should be allowed to compete on RuPaul’s Drag Race?

CJ

I absolutely think they should, and I think that the show is stagnating and suffering because they don’t include transgender women. Drag is an aesthetic and the show really only judges on creativity and execution; rarely do they applaud "passability.” I think that drag has always pushed the limits, and I found it bizarre that the show wouldn't be inclusive, considering that the world is ready for it.

MJ CJ

And finally, what is your dream for equality?

I wish that everyone was seen as individuals. What’s been refreshing is the open mindedness in the younger generation. The younger high-school-aged students that have trained in the same facilities as I have appeared to fully understand what I do, and they never need to be convinced or have things explained to them. I love that and it makes me very excited. We’ll have a generation of openminded kids that will grow up and liberate the world and even more.

FORT LAUDERDALE INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

PRESENTS THE FLORIDA PREMIERE OF ROB STEWART’S THRILLING EXPOSÉ, SHARKWATER EXTINCTION

"The animal we fear the most is the one we can't live without." - Rob Stewart In 2017, news spread worldwide when Canadian filmmaker and environmental advocate, Rob Stewart, went missing off the coast of Islamorada in the Florida Keys while completing the filming of Sharkwater Extinction. Days later, they discovered that a diving accident tragically took his life. Rob devoted his life to saving sharks, but without them our oceans, which provide 70% of the air we breathe, would be destroyed. Through Sharkwater Extinction, Rob’s parents and film crew will keep Rob’s legacy alive. The 33rd Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival (FLiFF) presented Rob’s previous films, Sharkwater and Revolution. This year, FLiFF’s closing night film will be Sharkwater Extinction. Sharkwater Extinction, which was completed posthumously, follows Stewart and his team while they dive deep into the massive illegal and unethical shark fin industry and the political corruption behind it and a conspiracy that is leading to the extinction of sharks.

“When people start removing things from an ecosystem it cascades and hurts us,” Casagrande said. If sharks become extinct, fish that eat phytoplankton and algae, which produce oxygen, will multiply. Left unregulated, it will have catastrophic results on oxygen in the atmosphere. The team confronted fishermen who make their money through catching sharks. No fisherman is as memorable in the film as “Mark the Shark” from Miami. Sharkwater Extinction reveals itself not only as a thrilling, investigative action-adventure piece on the shark finning industry, but also a celebration of Rob Stewart’s life. Sharkwater Extinction will have its Florida Premiere at FLiFF on Saturday, November 17, 8:00PM at Bailey Hall Broward College, located at 3501 Davie Road, Davie, FL. Rob’s parents, Brian and Sandy Stewart, will attend to present the Rob Stewart Environmental Award to another film at FLiFF, Poisoning Paradise, produced and directed by Keely Shaye Brosnan and Teresa Tico with executive producer Pierce Brosnan.

SOUTH FLORIDA FRINGE

By Steven O. Evans, PhD

S

outh Florida Fringe brings a unique style of theatrical entertainment to Wilton Theater Factory. OutClique magazine talked with Bob Young, Executive Director of South Florida Fringe, who’s bringing the shows to the stage. Steven: Bob, tell our readers about Fringe! What’s the concept? Bob: Following the example of the Edinburgh Fringe, other Fringe Festivals have sprung up in Europe, North America, Australia, and Asia, many of which follow the true Fringe philosophy, to provide independent performance artists with the opportunity to show their work in an uncensored and unjuried environment and to give 100% of ticket sales back to them. The South Florida Fringe Festival (formerly, the Fort Lauderdale Fringe Festival) began in 2012 as a weekend-long event sponsored by Broward College. On May 2-5, 2019, in Wilton Manors, FL, we will present our fifth Fringe Festival, now sponsored by ArtServe.

What can audiences expect from Delirium?

SOE

How does Martin Dockery bring Delirium to life?

Delirium is a true story about love, loss, and monarch butterflies. It’s Martin Dockery’s autobiographical account of meeting his wife, opening an absurdist restaurant at Burning Man, and saying goodbye to his closest companion, his dog. Through humor and heartbreak, we follow Dockery’s equally devastating and uplifting account of both falling in love and falling apart.

BY

There is no rigid script for Delirium. Rather, it’s a tale told extemporaneously each night, so as to retain the organic nature of a story being told for the very first time. Dockery uses the full stage to perform the action of the tale while simultaneously narrating it, creating a dynamic, immersive, and energized experience for the audience. He spins multiple narrative threads all at once, weaving a tapestry that ranges from an airport in Toronto to the desert of Nevada, and from an apartment in Brooklyn to the central highlands of Mexico.

SOE BY

Tell us how God can be a Scottish drag queen.

SOE BY

What is your favorite part about Mike Delamont’s style of comedy?

Mike Delamont is a very popular comedian and entertainer in Canada. One of his most popular characters has now evolved into several very funny shows with God as a frumpy Scottish drag queen. We meet God, barefoot and dressed in plain, ill-fitting drag, as she comes down to skewer everything from Justin Bieber to the Pope, from Platypus to Pocahontas in, as one reviewer put it, an “unforgettable two-act comedy of biblical proportions.”

Like Martin Docklery, it seems unscripted. Mike, as God, is totally relaxed in his delivery, with seemingly impromptu, off-the-cuff one-liners that are just hysterical. And then you realize it is a razor sharp satire on the human condition, presented in a way to make you laugh and think at the same time. Again, both he and Dockery have a very natural way of leading you on a journey of discovery through humor, humility, and just pure talent.

Get your tickets to see Delirium November 12 & 13, 2018, and God is a Scottish Drag Queen December 3 & 4, 2018, at Wilton Theater Factory (2304 North Dixie Highway, Wilton Manors, FL 33305) and at www.SoFloFringe.com. 106 | OutClique.com
