THE NAKED MAGICIANS SLEEVES UP, PANTS DOWN!

W

hat happens with two guys join forces, strip on stage, and combine their best tricks? The result is a hilarious show called, The Naked Magicians. These boys from “down under” travel the world together with their own unique brand of comedy and magic. The boys will be coming to the Coral Springs Center for the Arts (www.TheCenterCS.com) October 12, 2018 for a one night only show. Check out their website for more pictures, videos, and details (www.NakedMagicians. com). OutClique magazine talked to the guys, Christopher Wayne and Mike Tyler, about their show and travels.

You’ve spent a lot of time touring and living in the U.S. What are any favorite things or foods that you can’t find in Australia? Christopher: Something America does that we don’t really do in Australia is Halloween, which is my favorite time of year. I love being in America during the month of October. If we aren’t at the gym or doing a show, then I’m at the nearest theme park going through the haunted attractions. They are the best and worst thing at the same time! Mike: One of my favorite things is doing morning TV in the U.S. The hosts always get excited once they hear our accents and realize we really are Australian. All of a sudden they’re much more encouraging of us to get naked live on air and show off what we’ve got “downunder.” How did you guys come up with this idea? Did you spend all your money going to magician school and could not afford clothing?

CW

Mike and I were two best friends, both of whom had successful

08 | OutClique.org

independent careers as comedians and magicians. We were both passionate about making something that had legitimately never been done before in our industry. We realized that three words had never been uttered before, ”Naughty. Magic. Show.” We knew it would be either the best or worst idea ever. Seven countries and 250+ cities later, we love getting on stage with our sleeves up and pants down.

MT

As best mates we often talked about the cheesy stereotypes that still exist in many magic shows these days, the top hats, tuxedo, capes ,and wands. We already had full time successful careers as entertainers and decided to create a show that would strip away those magic stereotypes. The aim was always to create a very cheeky, very funny show with incredible magic that would attract an audience that wouldn’t normally attend a magic show. Now we’re having an amazing time touring the world getting our wands out on stage. What’s your favorite trick and why?

CW

I can’t tell you what happens, but the finale of The Naked Magicians is my absolute favorite trick. It is the most outrageous, magical, naughty, and hilarious thing you will ever see. It literally has people leaving the theatre with tears streaming down their face, and stomachs sore from laughter. It’s my favorite thing in the world to make happen!

MT

All the tricks in our show are centered around those naughty topics that people normally only talk about with friends behind closed doors after a few wines. I love that our show allows us to have hundreds or sometimes thousands of people in stitches while we explore those risqué topics. Giving the audience a sore jaw from laughing is one of my favorite things to do naked. What is the best thing about your profession with traveling and meeting so many people?

CW

More than anything else, I love that for 90 minutes I just make people laugh. In 2018 with everything going on, there

is something truly special about not worrying about anything and just having a good night of entertainment. I am so thankful that I can give that to people (and hopefully make them a bit horny in the process).

MT

Christopher and myself were best mates before we created the show. What other job can you do travelling the world with your buddy, entertaining a theatre full of people every night? Turning up naked to work is a nightmare for most people, for us it’s a dream we’re living every day and we love it! What do you do when you’re not naked and making magic?

CW

I exercise (clothed), nap (naked), FaceTime my dog (depends), and go to the movies (clothed).

MT

When I’m not on tour, I’m doing work on the house in Australia and spending time with my nieces. I also swim, run, or gym every day. Keep an eye out for my Speedo tan lines on stage.

GETTING BIDS AS EASY AS 1, 2 3 Rod Davis CEO BBB Serving Southeast Florida and the Caribbean

E

ven though we are busier every day, hiring the wrong business can create problems that will not only consume hour upon hour, but will have a negative impact on your bank account. BBB tries to help consumers find businesses that have earned trust, and because even the best businesses can make a mistake, BBB Accredited Businesses agree to review, respond, and work to resolve complaints filed with BBB.

And because you don’t always have time to interview and screen businesses, BBB does much of the initial work for you. BBB Accredited Businesses must be properly licensed, have a good track record with consumers, advertise honestly and work proactively with consumers. BBB permits you to request quotes from businesses directly or send a request to obtain multiple quotes (up to 3). It all begins with a start to go.bbb.org/2MaIdXY

Whether you are looking for a business to fix your roof or an attorney to draft a contract, the tool makes it easy for you to obtain quotes and find the right business for you.

16 | OutClique.org

Next you will complete a form and upload pictures to help you get complete quotes. I recently used this tool to obtain quotes from three businesses to manufacture and install plantation shutters in two bedrooms I was remodeling. I wanted to match the shutters I had in the rest of the house so I took a picture of the shutters, measured the windows, and indicated that I wanted the composite shutters. By providing as much information as possible, you will receive more detailed responses. The Request A Quote form lets you indicate if you prefer to be contacted by email or by phone. Once the information is provided, you can relax until receiving an email telling you that quotes are ready for your review. The information sent to you together with the quote will permit you to review the business profile and information to help you decide which business provides the best option for you. After reviewing my options and checking out the businesses, I sent an email and made an appointment for the business to come to my house and make final measurements. Once that was complete, we signed the agreement and the business gave me a timeframe of 4-5 weeks for the shutters to be manufactured. The business called me when the shutters were ready and we set the time for installation. Today I have matching shutters in every room and never had to leave my house. Most projects go smoothly, but remember to keep all of your paperwork and agreements. Keep tabs on the projects and deadlines. If a deadline is missed, call the business and ask for an explanation and get any promises in writing. All agreements should have a

payment plan that retains a significant amount of the payment to be made only after the work is completed and satisfactory. In some instances, there may be reasonable disagreements and BBB is a resource to help resolve disputes and if necessary, even offer dispute resolution services. BBB requires all BBB Accredited Businesses to live up to the BBB Code of Business Practices. It is nice to have that support behind you, but the best news is that you will likely never need it. Once the work is complete, take time to share your experience with our community by leaving a review at BBB.org. If the business did a great job, let them know. If the business did not live up to expectations, you should let them know what they can do to improve. Good businesses appreciate the feedback and will take constructive comments to heart and either refine their process or provide additional training to employees.

SOUTHERN COMFORT CONFERENCE

KEYNOTE SPEAKER GIA GUNN

By Denny Patterson From September 6-8, 2018, trans women and men, allies, activists and medical professionals will gather at the Riverside Hotel on Las Olas Blvd for the Southern Comfort Conference, one of the largest gatherings of the trans community in the world. This is a conference that attracts people from all over the globe and has built a reputation as a safe place for the LGBT+ people with a familial atmosphere and aims at inclusiveness. This year, one of the keynote speakers will be RuPaul’s Drag Race alum and trans, activist Gia Gunn. Known for her popular catchphrase, “Absolutely!” and her eccentric personality, Gia has been advocating for trans rights from the day she was born. I received the pleasure of chatting more with her about the conference, her time on Drag Race, and her own personal journey of transitioning. She plans to undergo surgery this December. Hello, Gia! Welcome to Fort Lauderdale! You are a keynote speaker at this year’s Southern Comfort Conference. What can attendees expect to hear from your speech? The true Gia Gunn story. From childhood to the discovery of my womanhood. My experience 18 | OutClique.org

on RuPaul’s Drag Race and what being on the show has done for me personally and my career. I will also be discussing the possibilities of gender and sexuality! How important would you say are conferences like the Southern Comfort? I believe any time people can gather together and be themselves is a good time. The world needs more events like Southern Comfort to promote healthy living and expose the different lifestyles that we all share, but have very different ways and experiences. Let’s start talking about these ideas and share our lives with others. Would you mind sharing with our readers more about your own personal journey? When did you realize you were trans and why did it take you until recently to come out about it? I have always felt that I’ve carried a feminine energy within me. However, society only defines gender by being female or male, gay or straight. From birth, nobody is exposed to this being an option and most parents are not going to push this on their children, as it is a very complicated thing to understand and explain. It took me years to work through my confusion around gender, sexual preference, and finally being able to look myself in the mirror and admit I am indeed transgender. It took me 25 years to work through my self-discovery. Being transgender is not something you decide to do, and everyone’s realization process is completely different and operates on different timelines. However, soon the conversation will be so open that people will feel more comfortable early on knowing that they are not alone. You have been heavily involved with political activism and pushing for trans rights. How has that been going? I personally feel that I have been pushing for trans rights even before I started to wear women’s clothing mainly due to the trans community being the first people I met when I stepped foot into the LGBT world. However, now that I have a platform to change lives and a voice with opinions, I am looking forward to 20 | OutClique.org

getting out there even more than before and starting to change lives with my story and not just a performance. How did your family and friends react when you told them you were going to transition? My family and close friends have been supportive of my sexuality and feminine ways since day one. As a little kid, my mom would buy me Barbies and my dad would drive me to okeiko Japanese dance lessons every weekend where I would dress up as a girl, since the age of seven. Coming out as gay and transgender are two very different things. However, coming out as either will show you who your real friends are. Are you still crowd funding for your surgery? How much money have you raised? At this point in time, I have raised $25,694 out of $30,000. A big thanks to Jeremy Joseph over at G-A-Y in London for raising a huge portion of this blessing for me! Jeremy owns the biggest gay club in London, and last year

we had a heart to heart conversation in the dressing room about how I was ready for my surgery. Weeks after starting the GoFundMe, I got a message from Jeremy stating that he does a fundraiser every week and wanted to donate until I reached my goal. I was literally speechless as I couldn’t even fathom the amount of gratitude I had in that moment. I have just a little way to go until I complete my goal and plan on getting the surgery in December 2018. For anyone who is afraid to come out as trans, what advice would you give them? Be more afraid of making the wrong decision before being afraid of what other people are going to think of you. Judgment will always exist, but inner happiness is key. Do you think you would have been portrayed differently on Drag Race if you were openly trans on your season? 100 percent yes. Simply because I would have been more comfortable with who I was and possibly would not have said some of the

things I did due to insecurity and anger. But would I still have been me? Absolutely! There has been some backlash about the way Drag Race portrays minorities within the queer community, and how inclusive the show is when it comes to transgender queens and queens of color. What is your take on this? Coming soon in my book! So, you do feel like you were accurately portrayed on your season? Yes, I do. When you go on Drag Race, you are not forced to say or do anything you don’t want to. So, at the end of the day, the editing process can sometimes take away from the reality at that moment in time but we all hold responsibility in how we choose to carry ourselves and portray our characters and individual beings outside of drag. Where do you think the country will be at in 10 years with transgender rights? Like in Thailand, I would hope to see transgender as a third legal gender option for those who don’t identify as man or woman. What can we expect from you next? Any upcoming projects we should be on the lookout for? I will be releasing my new song and music video featuring Alaska Thunderfuck and “LaChinaMasLatina” at the end of the month. I am also in the process of writing a book. So, stay tuned for everything Gia Gunn! There are rumors circulating that you will be on the next season of All Stars. Care to comment on this? As far as I’m concerned, I don’t think we will be seeing any trans contestants on this show based off RuPaul’s viewpoints in the past. However, hopefully this will change soon!

The Southern Comfort Conference runs September 6 - 8, 2018. For more information, visit www.SCCFla.org. 22 | OutClique.org

RISE OF THE MILLENNIALS By Denny Patterson

M

illennials. Got to love them, right? For those who are not familiar with the term, millennials are people who are reaching young adulthood in the early 21st century. Although there is no precise date as to when this cohort starts or ends, demographers and researchers typically use the early 1980s as starting birth years and the mid-1990s to early 2000s as ending birth years. Yes, what a time to be alive. This is the generation that is responsible for our future. They will make the 28 | OutClique.org

changes to benefit society. There are millions of millennials within the U.S. who are currently facing financial struggles. They can’t afford to attend school or be out on their own. But, the millennial generation will step up. I had the pleasure of chatting with Andres Cannas, Darlene Hollander, Brian Jolly, and OutClique’s very own, Connor Wilkinson. Four LGBTQ millennials who told me what it’s like to be a millennial in South Florida and how they plan to make an impact within society.

Andres Cannas | 27 | Fort Lauderdale, Florida Musician / Model / Barista Where are you from? I always feel like the place I'm living is my home. However I was born in Medellin, Colombia. I moved to America some years ago to meet my family. What is it like being a LGBTQ millennial in South Florida? This question is quite challenging for me because I try to avoid tags on my life experience. Labels like millennial, black or white, LGBTQ, old or young, in my opinion, limit our lives. Creating distance, confusion, and fear between people. I consider myself as a living being with all its complexity and unintelligible meaning. I believe in being free of tags and being open to experience my spirituality, biology, or sexuality in my own infinite way. I consider living in South Florida a great experience. Regions like South Florida are not that common in the world. Having the opportunity of interacting in person with different cultures and languages is something that I really enjoy every day. What are some of the biggest challenges millennials are facing today? The permanent use of laptops, phones, and online life has created some behavioral issues that are definitely affecting our social lives. It seems like the person to person interaction is quite difficult these days. But, I'm not sure if that is a problem that only concerns just the millennials. What are you personally doing to make an impact within your community? I like spreading a message of love, hope, and self-consciousness through everything I do, either music, modeling, food, or coffee. "Music is the Healing" is the name of my first music project. I'm recording an EP with my friend and producer, Wizzmer. It is a multilingual collection of traditional songs from different parts of the world that have become a part of our heritage. It includes traditional songs dealing with fear, lost, joy, and pain. OutClique.org | 29

Darlene Hollander | 24 | Fort Lauderdale, Florida Women's Services Case Manager at SunServe Where are you from? I was born in Havana, Cuba. My family immigrated to the United States when I was five years old. What are some of the biggest challenges millennials are facing today? We are one of the most traditionally educated generations, yet it is difficult to find jobs that pay a living wage and utilize the skill sets developed through our degrees. A lot of us are starting our financial futures with large amounts of student loan debt. Mental health issues, such as anxiety and depression, are also at an all-time high for our generation. What are you personally doing to make an impact within your community? My job at SunServe is how I make the most impact. I am so grateful to have the opportunity to connect LBTQ women to LBTQ competent healthcare and social services. A lot of the services in the community have always been geared towards men, and it's wonderful to be a part of an organization that is willing to create a space that addresses the unique needs of the women in our community. I am also the Community Coordinator for Ignite Women South Florida, a women's social connection organization that strives to create a community of women, rather than just a physical location for women to go to. The idea is that you can close down a bar, but you can't take away a community. Additionally, I play kickball and dodgeball through Varsity Gay League. I love making new friends and building community through sports, but also love being part of our philanthropy committee in VGL, which gives back to local organizations like Broward House. What do you hope the future looks like? In general, I hope that we can ride out the financial constraints that we are presently facing as a generation, and that we are able to use our knowledge to make an impact. My next stop is graduate school for Public Policy. 30 | OutClique.org

Brian Jolly | 27 | Hollywood, Florida Content Specialist at Hotwire Communications and Front Desk Member at CycleBar Where are you from? I am originally from Virginia Beach, Virginia. I wanted to get into the PR/Marketing world in South Florida. What is it like being a LGBTQ millennial in South Florida? I think that in today's society, you have to view the climate as a constantly evolving atmosphere. I think we are afforded more opportunities than what may have been provided to others that came before us in this area. As someone who had to come to acceptance of myself in my later teenage and early adult life, being a LGBTQ millennial is a lot. I am working to establish myself in the workplace and my personal life as a standard young adult, while also doing it as part of the LGBTQ community. What are some of the biggest challenges millennials are facing today? Relying too much on technology and media. I also think in the workplace because of the various opportunities that we wish to pursue, our superiors believe that we don't value our jobs. But I think it's the complete opposite. Since being in South Florida, I have worked for an ad agency, a tech firm, a PR agency, a marketing ticket agency, and now a communications company. While it may seem like it is a lot to jump around, I value each job for different reasons, because at the end of the day each will help me get to my career endgame. What do you hope the future looks like? At this point, the standard is to get to a place where everyone is accepting of everyone no matter of age, sex, religion, or sexual orientation; however, my true hope is that people at least try to be open. The more that someone tries to be open the closer you get to acceptance. 32 | OutClique.org

Connor Wilkinson | 24 | Wilton Manors, Florida Media teacher at Saint Mark’s Episcopal School Where are you from? I am originally from a small town called Siloam Springs, Arkansas. It’s a little forest town with many waterfalls. I moved to South Florida in May 2016 after I graduated college to escape feeling lonely and isolated. I went to a very conservative, Christian, private school called John Brown University. Not only was I closeted, but I am also the great-grandson of John Brown. What is it like being a LGBTQ millennial in South Florida? For me, being a young gay man down here in South Florida has a lot of advantages. Everywhere I go I have someone who I can turn to for guidance because chances are, they have probably been through many trials that I am currently going through. I have avoided a lot of bad decisions because of my many adopted gay fathers! Specifically, one. When I first moved here I was so lost. I was 22 and all I knew was my small Arkansas life. He showed me so much kindness, patience, and love. I will never be able to return what he gave me. Do you believe millennials are as challenged as society and the media portray them? I think we are so challenged when it comes to social security and all of that, but I do believe we will figure it out. We will make change. I believe in us. What are you personally doing to make an impact within your community? Ever since I moved here I wanted to have an impact on the LGBTQ community. I eventually became a teacher and I hope I can be that person that I needed growing up for these kids. Bullying still happens and I hope I can protect those students who are in danger of it. I also shoot many of the covers for OutClique Magazine! Talk about breaking the fourth wall. What do you hope the future looks like? I don’t know what the future looks like but right now I’m just trying to improve what I can around me, send positive vibes, keep taking pictures, and creating art. 34 | OutClique.org

THE PARIS GAY GAMES 2018 By Denny Patterson

F

rom August 4-12, 2018 Paris hosted the 10th edition of the world’s largest sporting and cultural event – the Gay Games. The Games are similar to the Olympics, but with a little more flair! Starting in 1982 and held every four years, Paris welcomed over 10,000 participants from over 90 countries. The Gay Games bring together people from all walks of life without discrimination and prides itself of the values of diversity, respect, equality, solidarity, and sharing. The Gay Games motto is participation, inclusion and personal best. The next Gay Games will be held in Hong Kong in 2022. I had the chance of chatting with Fort Lauderdale residents, Kurt Dahl and his husband, Jeff Clark. Dahl was most recently the Vice President of Games Production for the Federation of Gay Games (FGG), while Clark is a participant in the softball division. They talked with me about some of the highlights from this year’s games in Paris. For more information, go to www.GayGames.org, www.GayGamesHK2022.com, and follow both the FGG and HK2022 on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

For those who are not familiar with the Gay Games, what are they? Kurt Dahl: The Gay Games which was founded by Tom Waddell, a former Olympic athlete, started in 1982. The Gay Games are a quadrennial sport and culture event and open to anyone. While it is called the Gay Games, the games are open to all. There are no qualifying events, you pay your registration and event fee and become part of the Gay Games. Our goal is for you to participate, attain your personal best, and be included in the Gay Games. What is your involvement with the Gay Games? Up to now, I was the Vice President of Games Production for the Federation of Gay Games. The FGG is like the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for the Olympics where the FGG award a host city the rights to hold the Gay Games. Prior to that, I was the

Co-President of the FGG. I originally became involved when Chicago bid and won the right to host Gay Games VII, where I was the treasurer of the Host organization. Why don’t you go ahead and give our readers a bit of a recap of the Paris Gay Games. Paris was amazing. We had 10,317 participants from over 90 countries. All the events went off with few issues. The weather was warm, so there were constant reminders for people to drink plenty of fluids and keep cool. The International Memorial Rainbow Run was well attended and kicked off the start of the Gay Games. The closing ceremonies, which was limited to participants, sponsors, volunteers, staff, and officials was well attended and it was a rousing success. Attendees witnessed the passing of the FGG flag from Paris back to the FGG and then to

Hong Kong, the host for the 2022 Gay Games. In addition, attendees watched a brief preview of what to expect in Hong Kong 2022. It will be a Gay Games not to be missed. Jeff Clark: It was truly an amazing experience. I played on an international team with athletes from Paris, Australia, England, and the U.S. We are already talking about keeping the team together for Hong Kong 2022. How important would you say are the Gay Games? The Gay Games are as important now as when they were founded in 1982. There are many countries where people cannot be out, and in some countries could even be killed for being LGBT+. In the opening ceremonies when the parade of participants took place, several countries did not have people march, as they were afraid to be seen. However, they were not afraid to participate in their event. It is because of that need for people to feel included, and to be part of a community that makes the Gay Games so important.

KD

What did you and Jeff enjoy the most about this year's Gay Games? For me, the sense of community that was present. Seeing all these people coming together for one week for one common goal. It was great seeing everyone around the city of Paris wearing their badges and later in the week their medals for the events that they may have won. The other enjoyable moment was being able to place a silver medal around my husband’s neck. I also had the honor of placing gold and silver medals around the neck of two of our friends from Chicago for fastpitch and slowpitch softball.

KD

What would you say were some of this year's highlights? The Pink Flamingo event that closed the aquatics program was one of my favorites. At the Dancesport Gala, one of the female couples was in a wheelchair. How her dance partner spun and held her while she was in the chair was incredible. Other highlights included the closing ceremony, the AIDS Quilt exhibition, and the International Memorial Rainbow Run. The parade of participants where

KD

over 91 countries were recognized, and the festival village which was open to the public and provided a space for people to meet up, experience real French Culture, and enjoy what Paris has to offer. The final highlight would be the 500 scholarship recipients, who, thanks to the generosity of others, allowed the FGG and Paris2018 to fund their attendance at the Gay Games. These participants, who otherwise would not have been able to come, were able to see first-hand what the Gay Games truly are. They now can take these experiences back to their home community. That is the true legacy of the Gay Games movement. What were the opening and closing ceremonies like? The opening ceremonies were typical pomp and circumstances, speeches, the parade of participants, and a great show by Ada Vox from American Idol. There were a few issues during the opening ceremonies around access to drinks and food. Paris was able to address this so the rest of the week we did not encounter these sorts of issues. The closing ceremony was amazing. Attendees were able to see a great show put on by local French volunteers who worked hard on it over an eight-month period. It was a great show and a great send off by Paris to all the participants. In addition, Hong Kong 2022 previewed what we all can expect in four years.

KD

Any developments with the 2022 Hong Kong Games? Yes. During the week of Gay Games in Paris, the FGG and HK2022 met face to face and HK2022 also did a presentation to the FGG general assembly to provide an update on the planning and next steps. In addition, many of the HK2022 teams were present in Paris attending events, taking notes, and getting a first-hand view of how the games are executed. They will take all this information and knowledge back home and update their plans accordingly. The FGG and HK2022 will meet at least monthly, and HK2022 will provide the FGG general assembly an update at each of their next annual meetings. We are very excited and look forward to a great Gay Games in 2022, which also happens to be the 40th anniversary of the Gay Games.

The Royal Caribbean, Adventure of the Seas, has some amazing swimming pools, water slides, restaurants, lounges, and shops. Then after my soul has been fully recharged, I intend to explore all that the Islands of Grand Cayman, Costa Maya, and Cozumel have to offer. Is everyone welcome and encouraged to join? If you like the idea of being around mature like-minded men for six days and nights, we definitely encourage you to join in on all the fun we will be having. How does this cruise differ from a regular cruise? First of all, we'll be sailing with many likeminded friends, and like all of the Celebration events, men from all over the world will be joining us. And who knows, we might just become pirates and take over the ship. What are some of the planned activities? You can look forward to Bingo, nightly happy hours, group dinners, pool time, fun contests, organized parties, and many other fun COF activities on ship.

THE NEW AND IMPROVED CORAL SPRINGS CENTER FOR THE ARTS

By Denny Patterson

T

o create a welcoming, professional environment for entertainment, events, education, and culture that offers the community a positive and rewarding experience – that is the sole mission of the Coral Springs Center for the Arts. Located in Coral Springs, Florida, this hot spot entertainment venue delivers a modern fusion of the finest in music, dance, comedy, and theatrical productions. With events such as galleries, concerts, and festivals, there are plenty of entertainment options suited for all ages and interests. In addition, the Center has a fully equipped dance studio and several meeting rooms for corporate and private events, as well as the Coral Springs Museum of Art which offers a diverse visual experience. The Center has come a long way since it its inception in 1990, including a $4 million renovation in 1996. Currently, another renovation is underway thanks to the Center’s current general manager, William Haggett. I had the pleasure of chatting more with him about what attendees can expect this upcoming season and all the changes that are being made. The Center has recently undergone renovations. How has that been going and what are some of the major changes? We have been working on some exciting updates to the venue. We are working with the city of Coral Springs to make impactful changes in customer service to those around 54 | OutClique.org

us. In the initial phase of the refresh, we updated the main lobby, concession stands, and all the theater restrooms. Old carpeting was replaced with contemporary flooring and outdated stands were replaced with more functional and esthetically pleasing concessions. Fresh paint and new signage and the initial customer experience upgrade was off to a great start. Plus, there were items upgraded that the customer might not see but they certainly experienced. Stronger, faster point of sales system to help customer transactions move more seamlessly and get them to their seats quicker. We added digital message boards that get them current up to date information. Our goal in all of our renovations is to enhance the customer experience and give every patron a very positive and entertaining night out. What's in store for the upcoming 2018-2019 season? 2018-2019 is exciting for us as we introduce new elements to our overall venue. We are renovating our meeting rooms to be an inviting space for special occasions up to 180 people. There is a real need for this type of space in town and I am happy that we will be able to offer it. Combined with the beauty of the adjacent courtyard, we will have a wonderful venue suitable for any occasion. Additionally, we are initiating a membership opportunity for patrons. As members, patrons will get early

access to tickets, and therefore some of the best seats. They can also receive discounted tickets and ticket fees, and access to our newly renovated Level 3 Lounge, which now includes a full sit-down bar, comfortable seating, and privacy away from the crowds. Join our Concierge Level 3 membership and the package elevates the patron up to more perks, including free valet parking and early admission. As for news on the show front, we are reintroducing a little bit of Broadway back into our lineup. Currently we have scheduled the Broadway Tour of Sound of Music, A Charlie Brown Christmas and Defending the Caveman. Also, be prepared to laugh because our comedy lineup is really taking shape with Paula Poundstone, Bobby Collins, Lewis Black, Jeanine Robertson, and just announced, Adam Devine. If you like music, we will have Lyle Lovett, Robert Earl Keen, Little River Band, and more. Plus, great tributes like Kashmire salutes Led Zeppelin, Tusk tributes Fleetwood Mac and for Pink Floyd fans, The Machine. Lastly, if you just want an exciting night out, look forward to World of Dance Live. And one of our favorites, The Naked Magicians. Why should people come to the Coral Springs Center for the Arts? We used to say, “Convenient and Close to Home.” I think the exact quote was, “Your friendly neighborhood theater.” While it is still all that, it is also fresh and exciting. We are working hard to make sure that everyone that comes has a great time. We are working even harder to program not just a little something for everything, but a lot of good stuff for all crowds. How beneficial is the Coral Springs Center for the community? Our partnerships with the city and county are strong. We house the Broward County School System’s arts community with orchestral,

choral, and band concerts every year. We are the host for many functions of local Police and Fire Department functions. During the February 14th emergency in Parkland, the Center was one of the active crisis centers for the event. We became a base for government agencies, counseling, and meetings. We also house SW Florida’s premier theater camp and academy which is home to hundreds of aspiring singers, dancers, musicians, and technicians. Beyond that, once again, it is being able to enjoy a special kind of experience with your friends and family, the kind that memories are made of, that is the real benefit we hope to deliver to the community. What do you look for in a good audience? A great audience is one that is out for a special night and a great communal time. By that I mean, nothing is better than entertaining 1500 people who share the enjoyment of being entertained as a group. Let’s call it a positive mob mentality. That’s it. I like that! What do you personally love the most about the Coral Springs Center? I just love coming to work. The Center’s success revolves around a team. It may be cliché, but we are a family. The folks that work here are excited to develop the venue into something special and seeing patrons have a great time is the nucleus that the family revolves around. And, when the venue is buzzing, it is a beautiful building! Besides the upcoming season, what else should we be on the lookout for? I think I spilled the beans earlier with our membership and event space renovation, but shhh, we are working on a top-secret element that we are hoping to launch in October. Preordered concession purchases. Imagine, no lines. Sounds like heaven to me.

DATING CHAT APP PHOTOS

HOW TO TAKE THE PERFECT PROFILE PICTURE By Joseph A. Federico

W

e are living in a day and age where the selfie is king, right after content, of course. We are all our own living, breathing, personal brands, whether it be as small business owners, entrepreneurs, selling products, or what have you. And, because the selfie is the definitive key to success in today’s society, it is even more important in the world of dating. Long gone are the days of elongated dating profiles that went on page after page. People, men especially within our LGBTQ community, want it fast and furious, to know who you are, what you’re willing to do, and truthfully, what you look like. Are you hot? A daddy? Slim and thin? Hunky and hung? That’s the world we’re living in, so the pic’s gotta tell a thousand words, or less. And sometimes, people just don’t know how

56 | OutClique.org

to express their looks through the lens. We’re here to help you with that potential mishap. 1. Smile pretty for the camera No one will click your profile or want to chat you up if you have a sour puss look on your face. Even though you may be having a terrible, horrible, no good, and very bad day. You have to smile and maybe even fake it. But don’t come across as too fake and toothy, because that can be a turn off, too. Position your face so you have the best bathroom lighting behind and in front of you. 2. Don’t crop, it’s weird People can and will tell if a photo has been cropped. It’s weird and tells a story about you all on its own. Does this dude not like his friends? Is there something I have to be concerned with before meeting him? Oh jeez, I hope he didn’t crop a photo of his ex. We all carry portable cameras with us, so taking a

single selfie all by your lonesome shouldn’t be that much of a project.

photo, don’t be lazy and circle your face in said photo. That is just lazy.

3. No nudes Dudes, be cautious about this piece of advice. It is perfectly PG to posts pics of your pecs and stomachs, and even gym selfies of you sweating, but nudes are kind of rude. If you’re trying to attract a date and a mate (or beyond), keep some parts of you behind the iron curtain until opening night. Flex those muscles and keep that stomach flat, but please don’t flaunt your junk. Follow?

5. Editing may not be the best option There are so many apps available that allow you to blend blemishes and change hair and eye color. Don’t fall for the temptation! Sure, you may want to edit the background of a photograph, but if you alter your face too much, you won’t look like, well, you. And it will be a turnoff to those you attract. Also stay away from the puppy dog ears and cat eyes, unless you’re really into that.

4. No groups, keep them for the bedroom You want the person you are trying to attract to see you and only you, right? Steer clear of group photos with friends or family members, because the men interested in you will then have to play a frustrating game of “who’s who.” Furthermore, if you do post a group

Have you ever been in a situation where you’ve found the person you’re interested in has really strange or even grotesque pictures on their profile? How about just plain old weird? Yeah, think about those times and practice “Stop, Drop, and Click,” when proceeding with a dating app. You’ll thank us in the long run.

Japanese whiskies. “Our robata grilled items are definitely becoming a hit,’’ Abousalem said. “Japanese charcoal heats to a higher temperature than typical charcoal, up to around 1,000 degrees, creating that perfect char, but still keeping all that umami juice inside for any ingredient.’’ Favorites? Definitely the Lobster Tempura with spicy mayo. Also, the Yakimeshi. It’s a dish similar to fried rice, but served on a sizzling hot ceramic plate called a 'toban' and finished tableside. The smell and the sizzling sound turns heads throughout the dining room. Other “must have’’ dishes at Azabu Miami are the Japanese curry and strawberry kakigōri (shaved ice mountain). “The Japanese curry is actually a comfort food to every Japanese person. Each household would have their own original recipes,’’ Abousalem said. “The kakigōri is a popular

The Den’s centerpiece is a 500-yearold Hinoki (Japanese cypress tree) counter made from one large tree. “After having our restaurant in New York for 10 years and watching how the term 'omakase' become so well known to New Yorkers, we thought Miami was up next for the same potential and wanted to become the first to introduce the concept to Miami,’’ Abousalem said. “We wanted to make the experience more interesting and fun to our audience, so we decided to create it as a secret room in the back of the restaurant.’’ Make your plans to visit Azabu Miami Beach, our taste of Japan in South Florida.

LOLO’S SURF CANTINA

AUTHENTIC MEXICAN STREET FOOD ON SOUTH BEACH

By Steve Pike

Photos: DeepSleep Studio

S

outh Beach is known for a lot of things, authentic Mexican food, however, may not one of them. But if you look hard enough, you can find some nice places. Among them is Lolo’s Surf Cantina. Located on the northside of Marriott Stanton hotel (guests can enter from a main entrance or the hotel) near the southern tip of South Beach, Lolo’s might be best described as a Mexican gastropub. It’s the brainchild of Mexican-born chef Richard Ampudia, who over the years has gained the reputation as the “godfather’’ of Mexican street food. One visit to Lolo’s and you’ll know why. Casual and colorful, Lolo’s lives up to the Mexico City-born Ampudia’s reputation with a menu that includes sliced rib eye tacos, Baja-style fish tacos, Mexican chicken slaw, and tuna poke tostaditas. Where to start? Begin with the spicy wings and dive into a sliced rib eye burrito with a side of grilled corn. Part of Lolo’s Tostada Bar, the crab tostadas are also a great choice, as is the bone marrow chalupa. 74 | OutClique.org

The aforementioned tuna poke tostaditas (with avocado, lime, sesame and chipotle aioli) is among the recently-added items to Lolo’s lunch menu, which also includes an outstanding Mexican Dip sandwich with pulled pork, black bean spread, pickled onion, and spicy three-chili broth. Crab Mango tostaditas are a new addition to the dinner menu, and if you’re looking for something a bit different, go for the pork ribs platter with Lolo’s BBQ sauce, grilled onions, avocado and tortillas. Lolo’s also is open for breakfast and lunch. It’s not unusual to see the same people trek back and forth between Lolo’s and the beach for each meal. Any of the tacos are great lunch selections. Some of the more popular breakfast dishes include the Melbourne avocado toast with chunky guacamole and topped with a poached egg, and butterscotch pancakes with caramelized banana and maple pecans. On the bar side, Lolo’s has a deep menu of Mezcal and tequila, Mexican beer and margaritas. It all goes great with some of the best Mexican street food in the 305.

HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL MUSEUM EXHIBITION

Stonewall Museum - Armband One

U

nited States Holocaust Memorial Museum Exhibition on the “Nazi Persecution of Homosexuals” at Stonewall National Museum & Archives in Wilton Manors. 2157 Wilton Drive, Wilton Manors, FL 33305 On exhibition through October 14, 2018. Thousands of homosexuals, primarily gay men, perished at the hands of the Nazis along with millions of Jews and other victims including Roma (Gypsies), Poles, Soviet prisoners of war, Jehovah’s Witnesses, and the disabled during World War II and the Holocaust. The story of what happened to homosexuals in Nazi Germany is the subject of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum’s traveling exhibition Nazi Persecution of Homosexuals 1933–1945. The exhibition is on display at Stonewall National Museum & Archives (SNMA) in Wilton Manors, FL through 76 | OutClique.org

October 14, 2018. In 1933, the year Adolf Hitler assumed power, an estimated one million homosexual men lived in Germany. Nazi policy asserted that homosexual men carried a “degeneracy” that threatened the “disciplined masculinity” of Germany. As homosexuals were believed to form self-serving groups, the emergence of a state-within-the state that could disrupt social harmony was also feared. Additionally, the Nazis charged that homosexuals’ failure to father children was a factor in Germany’s declining birth rate, thus robbing the nation of future sons and daughters who could fight for and work toward a greater Reich. Between 1933 and 1945, an estimated 100,000 men were arrested for violating Nazi Germany’s law against homosexuality, and of these, approximately 50,000 were sentenced to prison. An estimated 5,000 to 15,000 men were sent to concentration camps on similar charges, where an unknown number of them perished.

“The exhibition explores why homosexual behavior was identified as a danger to Nazi society and how the Nazi regime attempted to eliminate it,” says Edward Phillips, exhibition curator. “The Nazis believed it was possible to ‘cure’ homosexual behavior through labor and ‘re-education.’ Their efforts to eradicate homosexuality left gay men subject to imprisonment, castration, institutionalization and deportation to concentration camps.” “Stonewall is proud to have the opportunity to bring this thoughtful exhibition to South Florida. This timely exhibit reminds us of the horrors that are possible in human existence,” says Chris Rudisill, Executive Director of SNMA. “History has lessons for us all and by honoring those lost in the Holocaust, we might prepare for a future where we stop atrocities against any group of marginalized individuals.” Select items from the permanent collection at Stonewall National Museum & Archives will also be featured at the exhibition, including three rare pink triangle armbands worn by homosexual prisoners incarcerated at the Buchenwald concentration camp, near Welmar, Germany. These were given by Chris Wolfe in memory of the Honorable Richard C. Faila.

GAY GAMES COMPETITIVE SWIMMER

ALVARO GUTIERREZ

By Denny Patterson

W

hen South Florida resident Alvaro Gutierrez picked up swimming two years ago as a therapeutic way to relax his mind and body, he never thought it would become such an important part of his life. This year, he joined more than 1,000 participants in the swimming program at the 2018 Gay Games in Paris representing the Fort Lauderdale Hammerheads. Last year, Gutierrez competed in the World OutGames. Even though the international event was canceled, swimming was one of the few sports that still took place. I had the pleasure of chatting more with Gutierrez about his passion for swimming and his experience at the 2018 Paris Gay Games. He hopes to participate in the 2022 Hong Kong Gay Games.

Let me start of by asking, what was it like being in Paris for the 2018 Gay Games? The 2018 Gay Games was an extraordinary experience. The diversity was quite impressive. Different languages, ethnicities, cultures, and social backgrounds, all in one location to celebrate each other regardless of where we are from or live. What sport did you compete? I competed in the swimming competition. I entered a 50 meters freestyle and backstroke. And, a 100 and 200 meters freestyle, and two relays. What is it like being an LGBT athlete? Two years ago I probably would not have understood this question. I became an LGBT athlete after divorcing my husband and leaving behind an eight-year relationship. Swimming helped me cope with loss and renew my spirit. So, the divorce is what initially made you want to start swimming? 78 | OutClique.org

Although therapy helped me cope with divorce, I realized I needed something more to help me physically and mentally, so I took on swimming. What made you want to get involved with the Gay Games? I knew that the Gay Games would be a key motivator for me to continue practicing. This experience comes every four years and Paris was calling my name. Were you an active swimmer as a child? Ha! The only time I was close to a pool was in high school because I had to film the swim team for the morning news. What do you enjoy the most about swimming? I love that it clears my mind. I am very inconsistent when it comes to going to the gym, but with swimming, it’s easier and it’s a lot cheaper than therapy! And you are a member of the Fort Lauderdale

Hammerhead Aquatics Club? Yes, being part of the team has introduced me to wonderful new friends. How do you and your teammates bond? Sometimes on a Saturday or Sunday morning practice, some of us meet up for breakfast. What do you do to mentally prepare yourself before competing? I mentally try to relax my body with plenty of sleep. Did you bring home any medals? Every athlete who registers receives a participation medal, which I am very proud of. As far as my competitions, I still need some work in order to bring home competition medals. My speed and technique have substantially improved since the Outgames last year. For the 50 meters freestyle, I placed 45th out of 66 registered athletes. For the 100 meters freestyle, I placed 39th out of 61 registered athletes from all over the world. Who is your biggest mentor/inspiration? My biggest mentor/inspiration has to be my mom. She has supported me throughout my toughest decisions and has been my biggest cheerleader throughout my new crazy adventures. What was your favorite part of the Paris Gay Games? My favorite part was meeting people from all

over the world who share the same passion as I do. All of us have invested a lot of time and training to have this moment. My training was in the pool, learning flip turns and perfecting streamlines. We all share the commitment. So, starting a conversation was easy. Tell us about the other athletes and your experiences with them. This experience has taught me that everyone has a reason for taking up a sport, whether they were an athlete in college or they use their sport as I do as a therapeutic course of action. Swimming is a spiritual journey for me. What’s one thing you would want the OutClique readers to know about the Gay Games and your experience? I want everyone to know that it is never too late to learn something new. The first Gay Games in 1982 made it possible to stand for who we are when it was once forbidden. I am proud to be an LGBT athlete. I continue to train because I feel the experience makes me a better person, and that experience is here for anyone who wants it. What's next for you? Will you be competing in the 2022 Gay Games in Hong Kong? In order for me to continue with the sport, I definitely need a specific goal to reach. The 2022 Gay Games in Hong Kong will absolutely keep me focused to continue practicing. I have never been to Asia, so there is a lot to look forward to.

RAE OF LIGHT:

AN INTERVIEW WITH ACTRESS CHARLOTTE RAE By Gregg Shapiro An Interview conducted before her death Charlotte Rae: April 22, 1926 - August 5, 2018

T

here is an entire generation of queer and straight people who grew up watching actress Charlotte Rae on television. First as Molly the Mail Lady on Sesame Street and later as Mrs. Edna Garrett, the beloved housemother on the popular `80s primetime sitcom The Facts of Life. But there is so much more to Rae, including the many years she spent as a stage actress and singer, as well as all of the TV commercials she did in the early days of her career. Rae’s aptly-titled memoir The Facts of My Life (BearManor Media, 2016) tells you everything you could ever possibly want to know about her, including what occurred when her husband came out to her as bisexual. I had the pleasure of speaking with Rae, who turned 90 in 2016, about the book.

Gregg Shapiro: What inspired you to tell your story at this time in your life? Charlotte Rae: A couple of years ago my son (and co-author Larry Strauss) said to me, “Ma [laughs], you’re 87½. I think it’s time you wrote your memoirs.” I said, “I’m not a writer.” He said, “Well, I am.” He’s a wonderful writer. He’s written many novels. He said, “You talk and I’ll write.” I’m glad we did. After I started telling my story, my history, I realized I was going to let it all hang out. All of it. And I did. The real truth of everything. Yeah, that’s what I did.

GS

So, are you someone who kept a journal or a diary from which you could draw on these memories?

CR

No, I didn’t. But it was wonderful having Larry there. I talked about the struggles we had with my firstborn Andy with his autism. All of the challenges for him and 82 | OutClique.org

for us, because it was so many years ago and nobody knew about autism. Then all about alcoholism, my husband and me, and then later on, after 25 years of marriage, my darling (husband) John (Strauss) told me he was bisexual.

GS

You write about being from Milwaukee and Shorewood, and you attended college at Northwestern in Evanston. What kind of impact do you think being from the Midwest had on you personally and professionally?

CR

Coming from the Midwest, which I love very much, Milwaukee was wonderful, but New York really opened my eyes. There were so many different nationalities and marvelous artists. I felt like I was home for the first time in my life when I went to New York; all these young people who were musicians and actors and dancers and artists. It was a wonderful experience.

GS CR GS

Throughout the book you have kind words to say about other actors, but you didn't pull any punches when it came to speaking your mind about other actors who might not have been nice to work with, such as Peter Bull and Bern Hoffman. Did it feel good to get that off your chest?

Anonymous after me, his sponsor told him that he had to tell me what was going on in his life. That was very helpful. It is hard on the woman because one takes it personally; that there’s something wrong with you rather than it’s just a fact of life. It took awhile for me to accept that there was nothing wrong with me. It was just his needing to be who he is and moving on with his life. We got a divorce and I moved on with mine. It was tough. I don’t know what to tell (someone in a similar situation), because I did suffer. Maybe today it’s more acceptable. I don’t think it’s quite as unusual today.

GS

How long did it take for you to write the book with your son Larry? I think, on and off, about a year.

Yeah. Normally, I don’t do that sort of thing [laughs]. Bern Hoffman, I loved him afterwards, but it was hideous working with him. Peter Bull was so anti-Semitic. That was so shocking to me. Smiling at you and then writing such a vicious thing. It was very upsetting to me. I don’t wish them any ill. It’s just that they were very offensive to me. In the chapter titled “Earthquakes,” you write about, as you mentioned, your ex-husband John's coming out as bi, saying "no need to condemn the man for being human." Later you also write about seeing him and his partner in a social setting. Do you have any advice for people going through a similar situation?

Well, I did go through a period of feeling less than a woman and feeling betrayed. But then I realized that he was going through an awful lot at that time. It was a very hush-hush period. It was not acceptable then. He was going through what he was going through. Because he joined Alcoholics

You also have a wonderful history of other gay men in your life, including classmate Paul Lynde, as well as Charles Nelson Reilly, and playwrights Terence McNally, Arthur Laurents and Stephen Sondheim. You also write about attending the same sex wedding of your granddaughter Nora. What do the LGBT people in your life mean to you?

[Laughs] they’re wonderful! Just like everybody else. Nora and her wife Katrina just had a baby. Katrina is a little older than Nora, so they chose her to have the first baby. The baby’s name is Louisa and I’m a great grandmother. They’re two very bright women. They live in Boston and work for universities. It’s simply wonderful! It’s all about love, isn’t it? Absolutely! Finally, if there was a movie version of The Facts of My Life, who would you want to play you?

CR

[Laughs] Meryl Streep! Meryl Streep can do anything.

A LOT OF SOUL AT CONRAD FORT LAUDERDALE BEACH RESORT By Steve Pike

A

s he sat near the lobby of the new Conrad Fort Lauderdale Beach hotel, Chintan Dadhich summed up the 290 all-suite oceanfront resort this way, “Every hotel has its own soul. This hotel, from the very first day, had the soul of hospitality”. Of course, Dadhich can be expected to say such things, he’s general manager of the resort located on Fort Lauderdale’s exclusive North Beach. But Dadhich also is correct. The Conrad Fort Lauderdale Beach is everything you want in a beachside resort and then some. Spacious and comfortable, the resort feels like it belongs next to one of the world’s most famous beaches. For example, each suite features nauticallydesigned variations with full galley kitchens and panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and Intracoastal Waterways. Guest suites range from a large 650 square feet to three bedrooms. Suites can be combined for up to five bedrooms. The resort is home to the city’s only 20,000 square foot, ocean facing Sky Deck that features a fresh water pool and whirlpool, plenty of seating, cabanas, and entertainmentprograms. There is plenty of room to move around from the Spinnaker poolside bar to the pool to the lounge chairs that overlook the beach. 86 | OutClique.org

The resort also has 10,000 square feet of flexible indoor meeting and event space, including a 4,524 square-foot Ocean Ballroom with views of the Atlantic Ocean. The Conrad’s Terra Mare restaurant serves a broad range of locally sourced seafood and beef. It’s a great venue for sharing plates. Tableside preparation of large dishes highlights a communal dining experience. “Terra Mare’s menus have food from a lot of places around the world,’’ Dadhich said. “That speaks to a lot of customers because they’re not forced into making a decision. And with the large and small plates, guests have a lot of options.’’ The Conrad’s Atlas Lounge serves an outstanding selection of cocktails (try the Basil Mule), as well as a deep “snacks’’ menu that includes an outstanding cheese and charcuterie plate and duck confit “tostada.’’ Want something poolside from Spinnaker? Try the shrimp kabobs or the grass fed burger. “We have such a versatile hotel on the beachfront and all the elements that go with it,’’ Dadhich said. “We’re here to make sure everything is curated for each guest. We are able to find just the right spot for each of our visitors.’’
