BE A SMART BUYER! By Kip Reynolds

P

urchasing a home may be the most important and enriching thing you ever do. It is easy to get caught up in the excitement of finding your dream home and miss important steps along the way. Improper planning can result in a slow process, disappointment, and even failure. Be a smart buyer! Sometimes love at first sight happens, but be sure to secure solid financing first. According to the National Association of RealtorsⓇ Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers, over 85% of buyers will need a loan to finance their home purchase. In order to secure a loan, prospective buyers will have to provide certain information to a lender to prove loan repayment. Your lender will issue either a pre-qualification or preapproval letter. These terms, often used interchangeably, are actually different. Pre-qualification, in the form of a letter, grants the buyer conditional approval to purchase up to a certain price. This prequalification or pre-qual is generally based on income, debt, and savings. It is not the final say, but it will provide a good price guideline for your search and often is submitted with an offer to purchase. Pre-approval or Desktop Underwriting (DU) is accomplished by providing additional information including employment, financial,

credit score and credit history to a lender. Similar to a pre-qual, a DU is also a statement of confidence that the lender approves of your purchase through Fannie Mae or FHA guidelines. It is important to note that pre-qualification and pre-approval are not guarantees of closing. They are important first steps that offer a seller and your RealtorⓇ a snapshot of your current financial abilities. Be sure the lender you choose helps you to know and understand all fees and monthly costs associated with any purchase price. It is infinitely more effective to house hunt successfully when you have a concrete price range and know the real costs you will face. So the big day has arrived and with letter in hand you are armed for success; ready to start looking for your dream home. Now it is time to meet with your RealtorⓇ. A good agent can use current technology to focus your search, optimize your time, and realize your goals. Communication is key to your success! Meet to discuss your budget, desired location, school district, and property features just to name a few that will make your dream home a reality. Lending is very important, but having a relationship with your agent who knows the market and the business is key to making your home buying dreams come true.

AC2:

An Intimate Evening with Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen is coming to the Broward Center for the Performing Arts on Saturday, November 2, 2019. Showtime is at 8:00PM.

A

udiences are invited to join Anderson and Andy for an unscripted, uncensored, and unforgettable night of conversation and laughs. Longtime friends, the late-night talk show host and the journalist interview each other and take questions from the audience. This popular show is a live, interactive look behind the scenes of pop culture and world events. McKay Calderon, the show’s marketing director, has been with the show since its inception in 2015. She says audiences can expect a fabulous time. “This show is very fun and lighthearted,” she says. “Basically, we have Andy talking about Watch What Happens Live and The Real Housewives, his interactions with celebrities and stuff going on with his life while Anderson talks about being on CNN and what’s happening in the news and such. They are both up on stage and it’s just an intimate evening with them both. It’s so much fun and audiences are going to have a great time.” The first AC2 show opened in Boston, followed by Miami Beach, Chicago, and Atlanta. The idea for the show came about after Cooper interviewed Cohen about his then-latest book, “The Andy Cohen Diaries.” Since then, the two-man show has continued to tour, reaching over 50 cities. “The show has been extremely popular, and they continue to build it up,” Calderon says. “As long as the tour continues to be a great success, they will keep it going.” When Cooper and Cohen first talked, it was during a phone call to set up a blind date back in the 90s. The date never happened, but a lasting friendship did. Even though they seem like complete opposites, but opposites attract, right? “The chemistry between Anderson and Andy is just as magical in real life as to what we see on TV,” Calderon says.

Anderson Cooper is the anchor of CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360°, a global newscast that goes beyond the headlines with in-depth reporting and investigations. The show airs weeknights at 8:00PM EST on CNN and is simulcast to an international audience on CNN International. Since the start of his career in 1992, Cooper has worked in more than 40 countries and has covered nearly all major news events around the world, often reporting from the scene. He has also played a pivotal role in CNN’s political and election coverage and has anchored from conventions and moderated several presidential primary debates and town halls. In 2016, Cooper was selected by the Committee on Presidential Debates to co-moderate one of the three debates between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. In addition to his shows on CNN, Cooper is also a regular correspondent for CBS’s 60 Minutes. Due to his work at CNN and 60 Minutes, Cooper has won several major journalism awards. He helped lead CNN’s Peabody Award winning coverage of Hurricane Katrina and DuPont award winning coverage of the 2004 tsunami. Additionally, Cooper has won 16 Emmy Awards, including two for his coverage of the Haiti earthquake and an Edward R Murrow award. In 2016, Cooper and his mother, heiress and socialite, Gloria Vanderbilt, published a collection of correspondence in a book called “The Rainbow Comes and Goes: A Mother and Son on Life, Love, and Loss.” Cooper always considered himself close to his mother, but his intensely busy career only allowed him to spend little time with her. When she suffered a brief illness at the age of 91, they resolved to change their relationship by beginning a year-long conversation unlike they had ever had before. The book debuted at the top of the New York Times Best Sellers List and remained on the list for three months. Vanderbilt passed away in June of this year at the age of 95. OutClique.com | 09

Cooper’s first book, Dispatches from the Edge: A Memoir of Wars, Disaster, and Survival, was published in 2006 and also topped the New York Times Best Sellers List. Before joining CNN, Cooper was an ABC News correspondent and host of the network’s reality program, The Mole. He also anchored ABC’s overnight newscast, World News Now, and was a correspondent for World News Tonight, as well as 20/20. Cooper joined ABC from Channel One News where he served as chief international correspondent. Throughout his time with Channel One, he reported and produced stories from conflicts in Bosnia, Cambodia, Haiti, Israel, Myanmar, Russia, Rwanda, Somalia, and South Africa. Channel One News was a school television network seen daily in more than 12,000 classrooms nationwide. Cooper is a 1989 graduate of Yale University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science. He also studied Vietnamese at the University of Hanoi. Cooper currently resides in New York City.

Born and raised in St. Louis, Cohen is a graduate of Boston University where he received a Bachelor of Science in broadcast journalism. He began his career in television as an intern at CBS News and spent 10 years at the network, eventually serving as senior producer of The Early Show, and a producer for 48 Hours and CBS This Morning. In July 2000, Cohen joined the pop culture and arts cable channel, Trio, where he ran original programming and development. He was responsible for developing and supervising all of Trio’s original productions, including the critically acclaimed original documentaries Gay Republicans, Easy Riders/Raging Bulls, and Brilliant, But Cancelled. Once Bravo purchased Trio in 2004, Cohen’s success was rising rapidly.

As for Cohen, he is an Emmy Award-winning host, producer, and author best known as the host and executive producer of the Emmynominated Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, Bravo TV’s late night, interactive

talk show. The series is the only live show in late night television and consistently makes headlines with bold interviews audiences do not see anywhere else. Because of this, Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen has become a nightly destination for some of the biggest names in pop culture, including Meryl Streep, Cher, Oprah Winfrey, Jennifer Lawrence, Ryan Reynolds, Mariah Carey, and Lady Gaga. Cohen also serves as the executive producer of The Real Housewives franchise and hosts the network’s highly rated reunion specials.

In his ten years as an executive at Bravo, Cohen was responsible for an aggressive slate of unscripted series and specials, including major hits such as Project Runway, Top Chef, Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, The Millionaire Matchmaker, the Million Dollar Listing franchise, Being Bobby Brown, Shahs of Sunset, Flipping Out, Top Design, Work Out, Make Me a Supermodel, Blow Out, Kathy Griffin My Life On the D List, The A List Awards, The Rachel Zoe Project, Work of Art: The Next Great Artist, Bethenny Ever After, Tabatha’s Salon Takeover, and The Real Housewives franchises. Cohen received an Emmy Award when season six of Top Chef won Outstanding Reality Competition Program at the 2010 primetime Emmy Awards, and he has been nominated for 18 additional Emmy Awards as Executive Producer of Project Greenlight, Project Runway, Top Chef and Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. In 2005, Cohen was awarded a Peabody Award for his role as Executive Producer of the TRIO documentary, The N Word, and another in 2008 as an Executive Producer of Project Runway. In Fall 2015, Cohen launched “Radio Andy,” a personally curated channel on SiriusXM focused on pop culture, celebrities, lifestyle, relationships, and the dish on all topics deep and shallow. The channel is a fun, uncensored entertainment and talk destination with

celebrity hosts including Cohen, who has daily and weekly shows on air. In addition to radio and television success, Cohen is also known for his best-selling books. His autobiographical memoir, Most Talkative, was released in May 2012 and became a New York Times Best Seller. In 2014, he published his second memoir, The Andy Cohen Diaries: A Deep Look at a Shallow Year, inspired by the similarly titled The Andy Warhol Diaries. The book spans a year long of journal entries beginning in September 2013. In 2016, Cohen launched his own book imprint Andy Cohen Books and in November became a New York Times best selling author for a fourth time with the release of his latest book, Superficial: More Adventures from the Andy Cohen Diaries. Cohen currently resides in New York City with his baby boy Benjamin and dog Wacha. He is currently on the board of directors for the charity, Friends In Deed, and has made various guest appearances on several talk shows. In January 2017, Fox ordered a revival of the popular matchmaking show, Love Connection, with Cohen as the host. Later that year, Cohen succeeded Kathy Griffin as co-host of CNN’s New Year’s Eve coverage alongside Cooper. Earlier this year, Cohen was awarded the Vito Russo Award by GLAAD for making a significant difference in accelerating LGBTQ acceptance.

PHILLIP DUNLAP

Our New Broward County Cultural Division Director By Denny Patterson 18 | OutClique.com

S

outh Florida is pleased to welcome Phillip Dunlap, as the new Broward County Cultural Division Director. Coming to South Florida from St. Louis, MO, Dunlap is a staunch advocate for arts and cultural diversity in communities. While in St. Louis, he served on the boards of several nonprofit organizations, including Jazz St. Louis, Missouri Citizens for the Arts, the LGBTQ youth-oriented group, and Growing American Youth. Additionally, Dunlap served as an adjunct professor at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, Webster University, and Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville, teaching jazz history and music business. Dunlap is more than excited to start his journey in Broward County. I had the pleasure of chatting with him about his new position and what he hopes to accomplish. What is the Broward County Cultural Division and its purpose? The Broward County Cultural Division is Broward County’s arts agency. Typically, local arts agencies manage the public’s investments in arts and culture. That generally comes in the forms of grant making, public art, and other programs like arts education. So, in Broward County, that’s what we do. We have a grant making program giving approximately $4.5 million a year in various grant categories like individual artists and arts and culture organizations. We also have various arts education and cultural tourism programs that we do as well. The public part comes because the funding comes from tax dollars, and it’s different in different areas. For example in St. Louis, the Regional Arts Commission comes from a hotel and motel tax. Here in Broward County, a small portion comes from a hotel/ motel tax but we call it a tourist development tax. The rest of it is a general appropriation fund during the budget process, but it’s all tax money. Can you tell me more about your position as the new director? I am the director of the division. It’s not unique,

but the cultural division is an actual division of the county government. So, I am a county and government employee and my job is to handle just about everything arts and cultural related in Broward County. Broward County is huge. 1.9 million people, 31 different cities. And in addition to dealing with the county on a large scale, each city has their own commission and elected officials and some of them have their own public art programs and things like that. So, there’s a lot of looking at ways to bring the community together around arts and culture. We are sort of at that 30,000 ft level and supporting the entirety of Broward County, not just making it about Fort Lauderdale. As the new director, what are some top goals you would like to accomplish? One of my main goals is to closely look at the county’s strategy and how the county has historically given grants, and really rethink the process. I have noticed a lot of equity gaps in the process, even in the short time I’ve been here. What that means is, examining where the money is going and where the money’s not going. Does the process that we have make space for smaller, midsize non-profit arts and cultural organizations and individual artists? Do we have aspects of our process that put some of the burden or less majority of the financial burden on the applicant? That might be easier to do for those larger, big budget organizations that have a fundraising machine behind them, but for smaller organizations, that might be one or two people. Maybe not even one actual full-time person. That burden on raising those funds can exclude people from the process. So, we are about to embark on a listening tour. I have been meeting all our grantees and listening to them. Asking a simple question, how can we better meet the needs of the arts and culture community here in Broward County? That’s one of my top goals. Has the diversity in arts and culture always been a passion of yours? How did it start? Yes! But it has evolved. When I was in fifth grade, I wanted to be a concert pianist. Then OutClique.com | 19

in high school, I got more interested in jazz, so I started studying jazz piano and decided that’s what I wanted to do in college. I did my bachelors and masters in jazz performance, and towards the end of my masters I decided, ‘I don’t think I’m cut out for this.’ I didn’t want that performance life. I always wanted performing to be a part of who I was and what I did. But in the jazz world, you move to New York and starve until you find whatever it is. So, I gravitated more towards the arts administration side of things, and that’s what I did in St. Louis for 12 years. Towards the end of my tenure, I started to get interested in the public funding side of things and the role that municipal, county, city, and state governments play. Helping the arts ecosystem grow and take root. I was pleasantly surprised to find out you came to Broward County from St. Louis. I am a St. Louis boy myself. Why did you decide to make the move to South Florida? Well, quite honestly, it was the job. I had never spent any time in Fort Lauderdale before my interview, so I am really enjoying getting to know the area. I am an explorer and I love to travel and explore different areas. So, relocating down here was kind of an extension of what I like to do. Learning new areas where the coffee shops are, what kind of restaurants I should check out, the location of plays and concerts, and where things happen. So, it’s been really fun to learn about the area. South Florida wasn’t really in my mind as a place I was going to look at until I got the job. Would you say the arts and culture in Broward County are relatively the same or the opposite of St. Louis? You know, there are lots of similarities. Broward County has a lot of the same types of arts organizations. One of the big differences I’ve noticed, and one of the reasons why I talked about wanting to really bring the arts and culture community together is because there’s not a lot of that happening. People want 20 | OutClique.com

to work together here, and they want to collaborate and there’s a desire to move in the same direction, but there are not a lot of organizations doing it. One of the things St. Louis did well was work together, and maybe because it was somewhat of a smaller scene, a smaller ecosystem. Not to say that St. Louis is better than Broward County, but St. Louis is a city over 250 years old. Broward, as a county, is 104 years old, maybe. So, there are cultural differences in each community.

Why are arts and culture so important? You know, it’s the soul of our community. I think we get bogged down in the day to day of the job and the bills to pay and we don’t stop and look at what makes us human. It’s not the job that we have, but the culture that we have, the shared culture of the community, our individual culture related to our heritage and backgrounds. And it’s those intangible things, like the food, songs, stories, plays, composers, musicians, and artists that makes us unique. That brings us humanity, and that allows us to connect to each other on a much deeper level than just the mechanical everydayness of the routines of our lives. When we look at ancient cultures, it’s the architecture, the arts, the plays, and the music where you really get the depth of what a culture is. And it’s all through the arts. Art and cultural programs are constantly being cut and losing funding. Is that a problem in Broward County? It’s endemic of what’s happening across the country, but Broward has such a rich history in the arts, and you can look no further than Dillard High School in Fort Lauderdale. The high school has one of the top jazz bands in the country. I’ve seen them perform on the Jazz at Lincoln Center stage for years before I even knew Dillard High School was in Fort Lauderdale. I just knew Dillard High School and its reputation for the great jazz saxophonist Cannonball Adderley who was in Miles

Davis’ Quintet for “Kind of Blue” which is the best-selling jazz album of all time. He was the band director of Dillard High School back in the 40s and 50s. There’s a culture and a legacy here of excellence in the arts, and I think a lot of the communities make a commitment to it. At the same time, we cannot put the full burden on the schools to do it. What we’re here to do as arts and cultural organizations is add to what’s going on in the school. We need to build on those solid foundations. The cuts happen, and it’s unfortunate, but we are here as arts organizations, not only to support but also to help advocate about why it is important for schools to keep these programs. What are you looking forward to the most about taking on this new position? I like a challenge, and this job is a challenge, but I really see an opportunity to make a difference. I think I can help lead this community through some great changes that will impact generations of people. It’s an amazing opportunity, and a huge weight on my shoulders at some level, but it’s not something I have to do alone. I get to work with a fabulous arts community that at every turn says we want to support what you want to do, and they’re waiting for the county to be a leader in this space. So, I am looking forward to connecting with the community and bringing the cultural division to the people that it serves. If we do it right, I think it will seriously impact the lives of almost two million people here. At the end of the day, if I can look back on my time here and know that I helped make the world a better place, then that’s something I want to be a part of. I’m not in it for me. I’m in it for what we can do together. For those who want to be more involved with the arts and cultural division in Broward County, how can they? They should follow the division on social media at @BrowardArts or visit www.ArtsCalendar. com to get involved. Or reach out to me. Call me. Email me. I will make myself available to anyone and everyone who wants to talk about our county’s arts and culture and how we can work together and make it better. OutClique.com | 21

PAM ANN RETURNS

am Ann is inviting everyone on a jolly holiday in “Pam Ann Returns,” her brand-new show starring the perfectlyinappropriate-in-every-way air-hostess, Pam Ann. From feeding the birds in coach to flying kites in first class, Pam Ann’s barbed wit has seen her hilariously negotiate even the most politically incorrect flight path. Her take on the world of airlines and aircrew may require a spoonful of sugar, a Xanax, and some Mary Poppers, but Pam Ann is sure to delight in the most hysterical way! “I’m thrilled to be flying back to North America,” says Pam Ann. “So much has gone down since my last time there. I’ve been super busy painting the MAX off my Boeing 737’s. Notre Dame is now known as Notre Vuitton and as of this week, I’m the official nanny to Megs and Harry’s bundle of joy. I hate kids but this little bugger is a First Class Royal so I will make an

exception.” Pam Ann is famously known for her musical numbers, sparkling Garo Sparro costumes, and her fresh observational comedy served up as only she can. Pam Ann Returns is a brand-new show full of magical surprises and hysterical movie spoofs including “Mary Poppers,” a film that transports Pam Ann into the original Mary Poppins movie. It’s SUPERcalifragilisticallyAMAZING! Pam Ann launched 23 years ago and, in that time, has toured the world twelve times, starred in her own TV chat show, worked with many of the world’s largest airlines, performed with superstars including Cher and Elton John and is now the official Ambassador of Air Italy. She writes and produces her own shows that continue to sell out globally. She is also an outspoken supporter of the LGBTQ community.

MARTHA, MY DEAR

AN INTERVIEW WITH LEGENDARY DISCO DIVA MARTHA WASH By Gregg Shapiro

F

Gregg Shapiro: In February of 2020, you are performing on the second Ultimate Disco Cruise. What are you most looking forward to about playing the cruise? Martha Wash: Probably seeing some of the other acts, if possible, if I have time. There are going to be so many different acts on there, it might be a slight problem [laughs]. But I think it’s going to be a great time! There are so many different artists and genres of disco music. I’m always excited to see other artists that I admire and have known over the decades. Everybody’s going to have fun.

GS

How are your sea legs?

Photos by Mike Ruiz

ew disco divas can make the claim that Martha Wash can. Early in her performance career, Martha Wash sang backup vocals for the one and only gay disco icon, Sylvester. Paired up with Izora Armstead as Two Tons O’Fun, Wash and Armstead can be heard singing on the classic Sylvester tune “Dance (Disco Heat),” among other numbers. Wash and Armstead also achieved superstar status with their massive 1982 hit single “It’s Raining Men,” performing as The Weather Girls. Wash made news in the late `80s and early `90s when unscrupulous music producers and musical acts, including Black Box and C+C Music Factory, used her powerful vocals without proper credit or compensation, leading to legal action and Wash received rightful recognition and recompense. Over the years, Wash has continued to record and perform as a solo act. In recent years, Wash has been one third of the trio The First Ladies of Disco, and will be performing alongside Linda Clifford and Norma Jean Wright on the second Ultimate Disco Cruise (www.UltimateDiscoCruise.com). I spoke with Wash in advance of the cruise setting sail.

MW

Not very good! I have not been on a cruise in over 20 years. My sea legs are not good at all! We’re going to make it happen some kind of way; but I’m not the best, trust me.

GS

Along with Linda Clifford and Norma Jean Wright, you are performing on the cruise as one of The First Ladies of Disco. What has that experience been like for you?

MW

It’s fun. We’ve known and worked with each other off and on for many years. Sometimes, when you do shows with other artists, you’re not sure who’s on the lineup. Then when you get there and find it who it is, you say, “Oh, cool! This going to be fun.” OutClique.com | 55

Music Presented by Artists and ports of call subject to change

We have fun because we act crazy [laughs].

GS

How does it work when it comes to performing? Are there solos as well as shared numbers?

MW

It’s three individual artists in one show. We come together and do our individual things, and then we perform the songs we’ve recorded together. We reached the Top 10 on the Billboard Dance Charts (in the summer of 2019) for the second single that we put out, “Don’t Stop Me Now.” That was great! We’re excited about it.

GS MW

What do you like best about performing in front of a live audience?

I think the immediate gratification (of connecting with) the fans. It’s a two-way street. You’re giving off your energy. They’re sending off their energy. It’s a great thing when everybody is having a good time and you feed off of each other. I think most artists will tell you that. It’s the energy you receive from your fans that makes you want to do better and better.

GS

Of all the disco divas on the 2020 Ultimate Disco Cruise, I believe you are the one that has the longest running connection to the LGBTQ community due to your time singing with the legendary Sylvester. Do you have a favorite Sylvester memory you’d like to share?

MW

[Laughs] I’ve told this story quite a few times. I was doing a show with him. We were performing in a small club in Mexico. He was performing. It was me, Izora Armstead and Jeanie Tracey singing background (vocals) and dancing. He’s just singing and singing. All of a sudden, there’s smoke coming up from the floor, slowly rising. Izora and I aren’t thinking anything about it because in discos they have smoke (machines making smoke) coming out of the sides (of the stage). [Laughs] Jeanie, bless her heart,

didn’t realize this. She thought the club was on fire [laughs] and she ran off the stage. Izora and I were still on the stage, dancing and singing, trying to figure out where she went. After our part was over, we asked Jeanie what happened to her. She said, “I thought the club was on fire!” We all laughed about that. We thought it was the most hysterical thing.

GS

Do you remember what the experience was like the first time you performed in front of a gay audience?

MW

It was probably back in San Francisco. It was just a progression. It wasn’t anything that Izora or I tripped about. We knew so many gay people, it was nothing for us. That’s your audience. That’s who you’re performing to. Go do your thing!

GS

Do you have any new or forthcoming musical projects that you’d like to mention?

MW

Yes. I’m working on my new album. We had to push it back a little bit, so it won’t be out until the first part of 2020.

GS MW

Will it be dance music and ballads?

No, this is going to be what I call a “gumbo.” Different sounds from a little blues to a little rock to some psychedelic `60s stuff. It’s going to be different, again, even from the Something Good album, which was the last one I put out. This one is going to be called Love In Conflict.

GS MW

Finally, Martha, what does one wear when it’s raining men?

[Big laugh] I guess maybe it all depends on where you are when it’s raining. Whether you’re inside or outside. You could have something on outside. If not, that’s fine, too. I’ll put it like this, you shouldn’t have anything on by the time it’s all over. OutClique.com | 57

BROWARD CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS

Kicks Off $27 Million Renovation of Parker Playhouse with Groundbreaking Ceremony

Photos courtesy Pierson Grant PR

Lisa Kitei, president of the Broward Performing Arts Foundation and spearheading the Campaign for the Parker, announced two new donations to the campaign. JM Family Enterprises, Inc. donated $1 million and will be recognized

for this important gift with the naming of the Parker stage as The JM Family Enterprises Stage. The gift exemplifies the company’s unwavering commitment to children and families and the arts-ineducation programs which transform their lives. “Giving back to the communities where we live and work is an integral part of who we are as an organization,” said Brent Burns, President and CEO of JM Family Enterprises. “Programming at Parker Playhouse enriches the lives of South Floridians through immersive cultural experiences, performances, and learning opportunities. We are honored to play a role in ensuring that a focus on the arts remains strong for generations to come.”

“This is an exciting next step in the transformation of Parker Playhouse,” said Kelley Shanley, president and CEO of the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, which has managed the Parker Playhouse since 2005. “The Parker is not only a legendary cultural and entertainment venue, it also serves as an economic catalyst and a vibrant classroom for students who attend educational programs and performances.”

OutClique.com | 59

Bank of America, through its community development grant program, provided a grant of $500,000 and will be recognized with the naming of the Guest Services area in the new main lobby. “Bank of America’s partnership with the Broward Performing Arts Foundation is part of a philanthropic investment strategy to strengthen the economic health of communities across the country,” said Lori Chevy, the Broward County market president for Bank of America. “Through this partnership, we’re able to contribute to the future of Parker Playhouse and its ability to continue to fuel economic development in Fort Lauderdale.”

The reimagined Parker Playhouse will retain its classic elegance with many original architectural features remaining intact. The original façade of the building will come alive in the stunning new lobby. Parker Playhouse also will feature private donor and premium lounges, a signature bar area, and new hospitality experiences in addition to upgraded systems, stateof the-art equipment, and advanced acoustics. The popular continental seating configuration of the theater will be maintained.

The lead gift to the campaign came from S. Donald Sussman who will name the centerpiece of the new theater, the Sussman Grand Lobby. Other major gifts came from Linda Haller; Peck Foundation, Milwaukee; Deborah and Gary Wendt; Mary Jane Harlow Charitable Trust-Mary Short President; Dr. Nile and Bette Lestrange; and the Slattery Family Foundation.

The campaign for the Parker Playhouse received early validation when the City of Fort Lauderdale committed $6.285 million to the project in December 2017. “This is a great day in our community,” said Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis at the groundbreaking ceremonies. “Parker Playhouse is a wonderful asset and one of the first places where theater and arts ever had a home here. It’s the only venue I’ve ever been to in the world where there is not a bad seat.”

60 | OutClique.com

Renovations to the Parker will begin in Summer 2019 and are expected to be completed in Winter 2020. As the project will be completed in phases, the entertainment venue is anticipated to remain operational during the 2019-2020 season. The general contractor is RCC Gulf, a joint venture between RCC Associates and Gulf Building. The architectural firm is Wilson Butler Architects and the interior design firm is ID & Design International. Representatives from all of the design and construction teams were on hand with hard hats for the groundbreaking celebration. When Parker Playhouse opened in Fort Lauderdale in 1967, it was a catalyst in turning a sleepy beach town into a vibrant cultural community. Since that time, some of the biggest names in entertainment have appeared on the Parker Playhouse stage. Under Broward Center management since 2005, the Parker is home to hundreds of outstanding performances each season. The theater is also an integral part of the Broward Center’s education programs and served more than 40,000 students and their families last year. About the Broward Performing Arts Foundation

TUESDAY’S ANGELS BARTENDERS, BOXERS, AND BRIEFS By Denny Patterson

S

Denny Patterson: Can you start off by telling me more about Bartenders, Boxers, and Briefs? Chuck Nicholls: Bartenders, Boxers, and Briefs, or BBB, was started by Tuesday’s Angels about 12 years ago, and it’s an annual event organized by Don Clark. It’s been the charity of choice for all these years, and to date, we have raised about $120,000. This recent BBB, we raised over $6,000. I think it’s a wonderful event because it’s one of the events in Fort Lauderdale where so many bars participate. Usually they do their own thing. I think Don Clark does a great job in trying to get as many bar owners to participate.

DP CN

Fabulous! Can you tell me more about Tuesday’s Angels?

Tuesday’s Angels was basically founded in 1993 when we got the 501© (3) nonprofit status. We started in 1988 when a few gentlemen from Washington D.C. got together and decided to help the several men out there who were having

68 | OutClique.com

everal of the area’s hottest bartenders auctioned off their underwear on July 22, 2019. Don’t worry, it was all done for a good cause! It was the annual Bartenders, Boxers, and Briefs event at Georgie’s Alibi Monkey Bar benefiting Tuesday’s Angels, a Broward County based nonprofit organization. For the past several years, Tuesday’s Angels has, with the support of its generous donors, raised and distributed over $3 million in assistance to financially needy people living with HIV/AIDS. Through monthly dinners during the winter season, fundraisers, and events put on by local community organizations, Tuesday’s Angels has been an asset to millions of people. I spoke more with Tuesday’s Angels member Chuck Nicholls about the event and just how important Tuesday’s Angels is. financial problems dealing with their HIV/AIDS. They started having dinner in various places, and I came along in 1996. I was here in South Florida for about two months and I was on the board for Tuesday’s Angels, and I became the president in 1999. It’s a wonderful organization where we can provide financial assistance to individuals with HIV/AIDS. We primarily worked with case managers, and we have raised close to $3 million over the course of time. That may not seem like a significant amount, but that is very much significant. No money came from the government. Every dollar came from individuals who have participated in various events for Tuesday’s Angels. Moving forward to this past year, Tuesday’s Angels, Inc. no longer exists. We have now incorporated a designated donor fund. Five board members moved to Our Fund and we participate in the selection of grants that apply that we believe are purposed for the mission of Tuesday’s Angels.

DP

It sounds like Tuesday’s Angels is an organization that you will forever hold close and dear to your heart.

CN

I have been very happy being involved with Tuesday’s Angels. I enjoy working with individuals and we have a great board that I admire, and we are now working with the designated fund. I cannot say enough good things about it. It has worked out well.

DP CN

Why did you want to initially be involved with Tuesday’s Angels?

I had retired from Washington D.C. and moved to South Florida. I had a great job working with consumer products and safety commission. I wanted to be involved and helping people. I have worked with friends helping deliver food to men and women living with HIV/AIDS. Helping people is kind of a natural thing for me. My job in Washington was to protect the consumer, so my desire to help people sort of followed me down here to South Florida. That’s how I got involved.

DP

You mentioned that you were a board member and the president of Tuesday’s Angels. Do you currently hold a specific title?

CN

Right now, with the five of us moving over to Our Fund, we have no official officers. We are all just members, although I am kind of the key person when we discuss things, so I am kind of like the coordinator of the fun, but I have no official title at this point.

DP CN

Going back to BBB, what do attendees generally expect?

They expect to see hot bodies! The people that participate are the patrons of these bars. They want to go and promote the event to show their allegiance. These bars will showcase their eye candy, and they will come out on stage and people will vote for their favorite eye candy wearing shorts or bathing suits, something like jockey shorts and that sort of thing. There are a couple of drag queens coordinating everything and promoting Tuesday’s Angels at the same time. They have a little narrative about each bartender. The winning person pays money

for their favorite bartender to take off [and keep] their underwear. I think people go there primarily to admire and support their favorite bartender, but they are also there to support Tuesday’s Angels as well.

DP

How beneficial would you say Tuesday’s Angels has been to the South Florida community?

CN

I think we have helped tens of thousands of people financially. We help pay for medical bills, and lately we have been buying bus passes for individuals who do not have transportation to help get them to doctor appointments and so forth. During the early days of Tuesday’s Angels, we helped pay for some cremation expenses. So, there has been a variety of things throughout the years.

DP CN

Any plans for next year’s BBB?

DP CN

How would you say BBB has evolved and grown since the beginning?

DP CN

What will you do to ensure BBB stays a success?

No, we haven’t talked about next year yet. We are just getting through this year, and we are open to other fundraisers as well. We are open to hear from anyone who is willing to help with it.

It varies from year to year because of the economy and so forth. At this recent event, we raised $6,000, but on average, we have raised $8,000-11,000. So, it depends on the economy for one, and number two, it depends on how many bartenders are willing to participate.

My personal effort, I plan to stay in touch with Don Clark, the originator, and Bryon Richardson. They are the backbones of this event. I will stay in touch with them and be a reminder of the good work we do through Tuesday’s Angels. OutClique.com | 69

GETTING GRILLE’D ON THE DRIVE

By John M. Hayden

N

ew and improved. That sums up the status of a restaurant at the end of Wilton Drive. With a new name and new look, plus an improved menu, the Tropics Grille is stepping up its game. Some of the OutClique staff recently hit up the spot for dinner to try a few dishes. If you’ve been in years past, when it was just known as just Tropics, you’ll see and feel a difference right away. They’ve knocked down a wall to open up and give the main dining room more flow into the new stage area. There is still the main bar by the door and the second bar back by the stage. The decor is updated and feels fresh and clean. The columns are aesthetically 76 | OutClique.com

nice, not a focal point but not a distraction either. The back room is still separate from the main area and has a more traditional bar vibe. But none of it means a thing without quality food to back it up, so we were anxious to dive into the menu. All four of us have very distinct palates so we were able to try a wide range of items and get a good feel for the menu. We started with some calamari, which was deep fried and the batter kept its crispness. The shrimp cocktail came with several large shrimp, a very good serving for an appetizer. And then there were the meatballs. We’re not talking little two ounce rations of meat in a bit

of sauce. These were three giant meatballs, each about the size of my fist. They were served in a house made marinara sauce with a light, ricotta-based cheese blend on top. Along with the calamari, these are great for sharing with your tablemates. From there it was on to the main courses. Executive Chef, Ricardo Flores, gave us some insight before we ordered, telling us, “We’re a scratch kitchen. Everything here is made from scratch.” That means all dressings and sauces are made at the restaurant. French fries are hand cut, mashed potatoes are peeled and mashed on the spot. The fish is fresh and cut every day and the produce is delivered daily. They may have a freezer in the back, but it doesn’t sound like there is much use for it. We tried a couple of steaks, a tuna dish, and a pork entree. The steaks were cooked as ordered, and the gorgonzola cheese melted on the filet added a fresh taste to a traditional steak. The tuna was very pleasing, and there was more than could be eaten there, even with all of us taking a bite. The pork came with a half rack of ribs and a portion of pulled pork. The sauce was great and the texture was nearly melt-in-your-mouth. It’s clear that Tropics Grille has two goals: quality food for a good value. We all left with take-home boxes so we feel like we got our money’s worth.

And we haven’t even gotten to desserts. The carrot cake is clearly homemade, because while most places are serving up little flakes of carrot in the cake, Tropics Grille has healthy sized chunks. But the thing that had all of our forks fighting for more was the Peanut Butter Mousse Cake with a brownie crust. I think I almost stabbed someone’s hand with my fork while going in for another bite! So when you’re hungry and ready to hit The Drive, give Tropics Grille a fresh look. Check out the full menu and daily specials at their website, www.TheGrilleOTD.com Bon appétit!

STARTING FROM SCRATCH

OUR TALK WITH CHEF RICARDO OF TROPICS GRILLE By John M. Hayden

W

His training and education is top notch and extensive. He proudly told us he graduated Summa Cum Laude from Johnson & Wales University, is a Certified Executive Chef by the American Culinary Federation, an accredited certified evaluator, and a Spice gold medal winner four years running. All that helped him land the job as Executive Chef at the Tropics Grille on Wilton Drive. But before he parked on The Drive, he spent some time in prison. Not as an inmate, but as an instructor and mentor. "I used to teach at a prison right here in Pompano. I taught culinary arts and there was an apprenticeship program there," Chef Ricardo told OutClique. He'd work with a small class of about 16 students for an intense, six month course, to give them the skills not only to survive in a kitchen, but also to thrive. "They get a certificate that they completed six months. I did that for four years." A lot of the men inside looked forward to getting out, but had little to look forward to beyond that. Being hired as a convict is tough, especially after years behind bars. "They were convicts. Seven, 12, 15 years." And like his sauces at Tropics Grille, he had to start from scratch. "These are kids that didn't have any training. Didn't know how to make a sauce." But Chef Ricardo gave them hope by teaching them a skill. If the guys finished the 1,000 hours of training, they got their Serve Safe Food Manager's license. 82 | OutClique.com

hen you taste his food, you'll understand why Ricardo Flores is a Certified Executive Chef. When you hear his story, you'll understand that he's also certified awesome. Between appetizers and entrees during our dinner at the Tropics Grille, Chef Ricardo sat down with the OutClique staff and shared his fascinating story. His students are cooking up success well beyond South Florida. "I have kids that are now executive chefs in restaurants and country clubs. They own their own restaurants. They own their own catering company." The pride in his voice is as strong as his meatballs are flavorful. "So that's pretty cool. I still keep in touch with them." There's one student that really sticks out. "He did seven years for something stupid." But when most of the world was content to let the guy rot in jail, two people believed in him: his mom, and Chef Ricardo. "His mom used to send him cookbooks. She had to send him two, one for the library and one for him." That inspired him to keep at it in the commissary kitchen. The man worked so hard, Chef Ricardo says he got him out of jail long enough to enter a cooking competition. "I made a team with him (and another person) and we went to the American Chef's Competition. I took them and I trained 'em and they came in fourth place, still won a silver medal." Flores says the competition was tough and close, and the team was within two points of winning it all. This man is one of the ones Chef Ricardo keeps tabs on, not only for nostalgia, but also as a way of keeping his eye on the competition! "(He's) probably better than I am now. He works at a club in Maryland. He's doing his little blogs, his things on Youtube."

WHAT MAKES US CLIQUE

FATHER JAIME, HOLY ANGELS CATHOLIC CHURCH

This series focuses on individuals who give to our community and make a positive impact on the lives of others. Often it is through our personal adversities that we discover who we are and transform the challenges into strength.

F

ather James Forsythe, affectionately known as Father Jaime, is the pastor at Holy Angels Catholic Community, a Catholic Church with progressive values, where all people are welcome to grow in faith and love. Father Jaime brings his life’s spiritual journey to guide him in his role at Holy Angels, a “home for hearts seeking acceptance and love.” OutClique.com | 91

Andy Armano: Thank you for sitting down with me to share some of your story. Has the church been lifelong for you? Father James: Yes. I've been 37 years I think as a priest. I was ordained in 1983 in the Arch Dioceses of Kansas City. After seven years, I left the Roman Catholic Church and was with MCC in Colorado/South Dakota before joining the National Catholic Church in 2002. I moved here (Florida) around 2008.

AA FJ

Did you feel when you were younger that you had a calling?

On March 2, 1976, I was working in a gas station and I was involved in an accident and I lost my left eye. I woke up from surgery about 8:00PM. Then, about two o’clock in the morning the nurse was in the room. I said, "Did I lose the eye?" She said, "Yes, you did." I said, "I thought so," and went back to sleep. Now, I will swear, till the day I die, that somewhere between when I first woke up at eight and I woke up again at two, I heard the voice of God simply saying, "You're gonna be okay." And for me it was my first personal 92 | OutClique.com

experience with God.

AA FJ

What do you see as the Mission of Holy Angels?

What we do here, really, is simply to help us get in touch with God's love. Our little slogan outside reads "Love Without Judgment." Anyone is welcome here. We really want to reach out to people and say, “You know, you're family here. You're welcomed here. This is a place where you can find love, safety, and acceptance. We don't stand on rules.” And if they're here, they can receive communion. They don't have to be Catholic, and they don't have to be Christian. All they have to do is just be here.

AA

I find it game-changing when you speak of putting emphasis on spirituality and inclusiveness.

FJ

There is a lot of the Roman Church that we really hold dear, especially the Eucharist. A lot of the Catholic spirituality is very, very special, and very unique, and very powerful. But when a church focuses on

AA

You know, one of the things that I've found personally, and I tend to see in other people, is that the beliefs that you grew up with are really hard to change. Even though logically, as an adult, or even as a teenager, you say, "Oh, I don't believe in that,” but fundamentally it's really hard to change those beliefs on a gut level.

FJ

We have to unlearn all that. You know, if your refrigerator is filled with rotten food, you got to get rid of it before you can put the good food in. So we do a whole process of unlearning.

AA

I always say, "Oh, I'm not religious. I'm spiritual." What I'm really meaning is, I'm accustomed to being excluded from a social structure found in many organized religions. I don't want to adjust to a certain set of beliefs that don't match my experience.

FJ

You know, I did a wedding on the beach, a couple months ago. I told them that anyone is invited to come to Communion. One of them said, “You know, I'm not Catholic." I said, "Neither were the Apostles." You know, that Communion is just a chance for you to encounter God - even if you believe it is just a meal, a thanksgiving, or whatever. I just think that way, you're invited, and whatever happens to you in that moment, that's up to you.

AA FJ

How do you define forgiveness?

AA

I have heard it said that being angry at someone hurts yourself, too.

FJ

You know that's the hardest thing to do? To forgive ourselves. Because we'll usually give a lot of people a lot more leeway than we give ourselves. And so forgiveness can also be a very self-loving act because when I forgive someone, I free myself.

AA FJ

Tell me a little more about the history of Holy Angels.

AA FJ

It’s part of the National Catholic Church?

Holy Angels has probably been around for about 25 to 30 years. It was first started by Bishop Terry, who is our now retired pastor.

The National Catholic Church of North America. And Holy Angels parish, we are the mother church, so we are the biggest of all the churches. There are probably about, well, there were seven other churches, but we just ordained three more people, so they're gonna be starting ministries. But we are, my joking way of putting it, is that we're Roman Catholics who roamed too far. I really think that we are different because we're really trying to move into the whole spirituality of the Catholic belief. Because it's beautiful.

Photo by Andy Armano | www.AndyArmano.com

dogma and rules, all of a sudden the church becomes more important than faith.

Forgiveness is the ultimate expression of love. And what "I forgive you," really means is that who you are is more important than what you've done. I really believe that we're spiritual beings who spend a short time in a physical body. And when we judge people, we judge on their actions. Where God, even in the scriptures, "man judges appearances, God judges the heart."

LET US PRAY

By Rev. Patrick Rogers, MDiv.

W

ithin the last 48 hours of writing this article, two more mass shootings in our beloved United States have been in the news. The massacre in El Paso just happened Saturday morning. Saturday evening, I re-wrote my sermon for the next morning only to wake up to yet another mass murder which happened in Dayton, Ohio. The killing is happening faster than pastors can write and rewrite. This behavior isn’t reflective of a country that is “united.” The lectionary text for that Sunday’s sermon was Colossians 3:1-11 and in it Apostle Paul shares with us the need to put aside choices that are made which are not of “God.” We are instructed to not choose and turn away from “whatever is in us which is earthly: impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed.” Our dear friend Paul left out a few behaviors. Paul left out the sins of racism, homophobia, Islamophobia, and sexism to name a few. Paul shares with us that we must become “new” beings: “In the new being, there is no longer male and female, Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave and free; but love!” (revised) I am grateful that we can now express our belief in God without circumcision. I never

quite understood why that got started as a religious requirement anyway! But I am more grateful that God believes that we have the ability to love each other as equals, celebrate our differences instead of using our uniqueness to continue killing one another. Righteous anger over these mass murders must lead to action. Yes we prayed on Sunday morning, but prayers without actions are just words. Mother Theresa often wrote about prayer. I will share with you some of her quotes: “Prayer in action is love, love in action is service.” And another: “I used to pray that God would feed the hungry, or do this or that, but now I pray that God will guide me to do whatever I’m supposed to do, what I can do. I used to pray for answers, but now I’m praying for strength. I used to believe that prayer changes things, but now I know that prayer changes us and we change things.” The day after the El Paso massacre, the news reports spoke about moms from all around the United States gathering together for a protest in Washington, D.C. It’s time to listen to our moms. The church should listen to our moms as well! Demand change. Protest. Vote.

WAS I NAKED? By Eric Noel Roman

"Ready, set, go!" shouted a race director as I embarked on what was the beginning of a race career that has led me around the nation. It was a muggy Florida summer afternoon and I had just started a naked 5k race. I zoomed passed naked runners on the Dare to Bare 5k, only focused in on one thing, getting to that finish line first. At that time, I burst out fast and kept the gas running hard. I finished that race top five and was so proud. Since then I have run countless races in some of the most exquisite terrains. Vast views of desolate mountain ranges, endless flats of grasslands, and desertlike sand dunes many never get to see. My focus? Go faster as the finish line is right there. As the races became longer I was forced to focus in on pace. The finish line was the bull’seye of my target. However, getting the center shot meant learning a new task. I went from a formula one race car to a grand tour sports car. I eased the gas and slowed my pace. The slower I went the more distance I covered efficiently. More importantly, I was able to absorb my surroundings. Instead of only seeing the end results, I took the time to look at the views, explore the grounds I walked on, and learn from each step. I had no reason to look back at my race. I only had to take note of how I felt at that moment, love the time spent

there, and move to the next step. Even though the finish line is ever growing further away, I reached my goals each time less tired. Each race is becoming more comfortable and equally challenging. I continue to improve my health. Everyday I continue to make so many new friends and open new doors. All it took was one person to remind me, "Eric do you remember the naked 5k? You were supposed to run that alongside me. Instead your competitive nature took over and you left me behind. Did you see the guy running barefoot? Did you notice the gorgeous lady in all of her glory?" My answer was, "No." Had I learned my lesson early on, I would have taken the time to absorb my surroundings and not just speed through things. I passed up many early lessons, friendships, and memories. So while you have taken all of the steps to improve your life, any aspect whether it is your finances, your health, self-esteem, social status, or relationship remember one thing: slow down and absorb your surroundings. You do not want to miss anything. Life can move fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you can miss it.

FINANCIAL FOCUS

INVESTMENT STRATEGY CAN BE YOUR ‘GPS’ AS YOU TRAVEL TOWARD GOALS

Presented by James Senior

S

ummer is here at last. For many people, it’s time to get the car ready for a long road trip. With GPS-enabled smartphones, it’s now a lot easier to navigate these drives without getting lost. During your life, you may take many journeys and one of which is the long road you’ll travel toward your financial goals. But even on this path you can benefit from a “GPS” in the form of your goal-oriented, personalized strategy. Your investment strategy can function this way by helping answer these questions: How far do I have to go? A well-constructed investment strategy can inform you of when you might reach a goal, such as having a desired amount of money when you retire, given your current age, earnings, sources of retirement income, and so on.

you make a wrong turn, so to speak – perhaps by putting insufficient funds in a retirement account or by assembling an investment mix that has become unsuitable for your risk tolerance – you may need to get back on track. It’s simple to program your smartphone to give you the directions you need, but crafting a personalized investment strategy takes time and effort. You need to consider all your goals – college for your children, a comfortable retirement, the ability to leave the legacy you want – along with your time horizon, risk tolerance, and other factors. Your investment strategy may well need to change over the years, in response to changes in your family situation, employment, and even your objectives. In any case, like your GPS, your investment strategy can help guide you, so make good use of it.

What route should I follow? To reach your desired financial outcome, your investment strategy helps guide the investment decisions you make, such as investing in adequate amounts in the appropriate vehicles, including your 401(k) and IRA. What problems await me? When your smartphone’s GPS shows red on the route you’re following, you know that heavy traffic lies ahead. Your investment strategy can also help you manage bumps in the road; i.e., a rate of return that’s less than expected, a lower income base than you had anticipated, greater college costs than you bargained for, and so on.

ASK BBB

Rod Davis CEO BBB serving Southeast Florida and the Caribbean

E

Question from John P. I was having a pool installed and my contractor said that I had to pay for the soil boring test. I told my contractor it should be part of his costs. Who is right?

BBB also recommends that consumers receive at least three bids, especially on major projects so you can compare prices, references, time frames and the details included in each proposal. BBB suggests that you provide the contractors with a uniform proposal so you can compare each option based on similar products and all costs covered by the contractor in his/her proposal. You can get quotes at: seflorida.app.bbb.org/connect

Answer: John, it is always important to know all possible costs before proceeding with a construction project. When you are negotiating prices, it is important to ask your contractor if the agreement covers all costs (e.g. soil boring tests, permits, etc.). The contract between you and the contractor should clearly state all fees covered by the contractor and any that are not included in the contract and are to be paid by the customer. So the answer to your question is that you will need to review your contract to determine if you or your contractor is responsible for the soil boring test.

Question from Stacy H. We had a customer leave a very negative review on our business that was not fair. She claims that we did not complete the job on time and so she wants a refund. The customer did not mention that she lives in a community with a homeowner’s association and they delayed approval of the project. Once approval of the project was obtained, we completed the project in the 45 days as we agreed. She said she would delete her review if we pay the refund. We don’t feel like we should give in to her demand since we did not do anything wrong.

very day our BBB is talking with consumers and businesses about issues and challenges. It is our goal at BBB to help parties resolve disagreements and by sharing the questions and answers with you, help others avoid the same problem.

OutClique.com | 131

Answer: BBB encourages consumers and businesses to be honest and professional in all interactions and that includes customer reviews. It is important for businesses to respond to reviews (positive and negative) since they are often used by consumers as part of the process to evaluate whether they are going to hire a business. Since potential consumers may read reviews on your business, your response should present your business in the best possible light. It appears based on the information you provided that the HOA issue caused the delay. Since there are additional steps to completing a process that requires permits, HOA approval, etc., do your agreements with customers base completion times from these key approvals? If they do, and you can demonstrate that, and that you lived up to the commitment, then that detail should be included in your response. If your agreements or explanations to consumers are not as clear about HOA approval, then you might update your agreements to eliminate potential conflicts going forward and work with this customer to resolve the issue offline. It is very possible that by showing this customer that you are updating your process and taking care of her concern, she will update her review.

Carfax report and so I thought I was getting a good car and would not have any issues. After four months the car started making noise and when I took it into the shop they said it needed a new transmission. I called my salesman and he said the car was sold as is and that they offered me a service contract that I declined. How can I get this business to fix my car? I feel like I am getting ripped off. Answer: The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Used Car Rule, formally known as the Used Motor Vehicle Trade Regulation Rule, has been in effect since 1985. It requires car dealers to display a window sticker, known as a Buyers Guide, on the used cars they offer for sale. The Buyers Guide discloses whether the dealer offers a warranty and, if so, its terms and conditions, including the duration of the coverage, the percentage of total repair costs the dealer will pay, and which vehicle systems the warranty covers. In states that do not permit sales of used cars “as is,” or without warranties, dealers must display an alternative version of the Buyers Guide.

On the other hand, if your process does correctly explain the timing for projects and the customer was wrong in this case, then you will be able to explain that in your response and do so in a manner that shows you run a professional quality business that clearly explained the timetable to the customer and that you met the contractual obligation.

Based on the information you provided it sounds as if the vehicle was sold “as is” and you should check the Buyers Guide sticker that was on your vehicle. Unfortunately, if the vehicle was purchased “as is” then you have limited options. It is for this reason BBB recommends that consumers have a neutral inspection performed on vehicles sold without a warranty to check out the major components of the vehicle. You may also talk to the business owner to see if they can offer any assistance toward the repair.

Question from Jose Q: I recently bought a used car. The salesman told me they inspected the car and it was in good shape. I also got a

YOU = YOU … EVEN IF YOU HAVE HIV By Stephen Fallon, PhD

S

outh Florida leads the nation in new HIV cases, and just about everyone seems to have an opinion why. “They’re all being irresponsible.” “I hear it’s the drugs.” “What they’re addicted to is their Grindr app.” “This generation just doesn’t care about taking care of themselves.” Since some communities account for more new HIV cases than others, you’ll also hear any variation of this exasperated question, “Why are so many young / Latino / Black / trans (take your pick) people still catching HIV these days?” Our community prides itself on love and inclusion. Everyone is welcome, we say, and most see the inclusivity symbolized in the many colors of our rainbow flag, and the many letters in our LGBTQIA community identifier. But when it comes to HIV, our conversations can turn hurtful. HIV stigma still makes guys nervous to talk about safer sex. (“What if asking to use condoms makes him think I have HIV?”). It keeps many people from taking an HIV test.

(“No one will want to date me, so I’d rather not know.”) Worst of all, it keeps some guys who are living with HIV from getting into lifesaving care (“What if someone sees me going in there?”) In all of these ways, HIV stigma only helps HIV. So why is HIV stigma still thriving, even in our community? Because we all have a primal, hard-wired response that tends to categorize and push away anything or anyone that could seem dangerous or threatening. We’re not usually even aware that this reflexive, primitive instinct for self-preservation has kicked in. When people speak judgmentally about community members living with HIV, the emotion pulling their strings is not hate; it’s fear. While our community has moved beyond the hysterical fears that were common early in the HIV epidemic (over sharing cups, or deep kissing), irrational reflexes persist: too many guys will gladly indulge every condomless fantasy with a stranger, but refuse even protected sex with someone who discloses his HIV-positive status. OutClique.com | 143

This is irrational choice disguised as caution. With today’s more powerful medications, when guys are successfully treated for HIV, there’s too little virus present to pass during sex. That’s right, multiple studies now show that when gay couples have condomless sex, if the HIV+ partner kept his virus “undetectable,” no HIV transmissions occur. Sound too good to be true? The Opposites Attract study1 tracked 12,000 condomless sexual episodes in gay male couples where one partner was living with HIV and the other was not. Nearly 5,000 times, the HIV-negative partner was the “bottom.” Yet not a single infection resulted. The more recent PARTNER2 study2 tracked 76,000 more condomless sexual episodes in gay couples of mixed HIV status, all without PrEP use. Still no HIV transmissions occurred within the couples. That’s why the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) confirmed in 2017 that a person living with HIV who has a sustained undetectable viral load has “effectively no risk of sexually transmitting the virus.” There’s even a movement now to get the word

out that our friends living with HIV cannot pass HIV along if they’re effectively treated. The movement is called U=U, short for “Undetectable = Untransmittable.” The science of U = U is not tentative or overly optimistic. It’s irrefutable. Unfortunately, old beliefs and reflexive fears are slow to change. A survey in North Carolina this July found that only 12% - 18% believed that successful HIV treatment cancels out risk.3 If we could see the hidden script at work in our fight-or-flight brains, it might read, “You have a condition that’s contagious, and which has cut many lives short. So, you are different than me. I’ll never be you.” The new truth is that You = You when U = U. That is, an HIV-negative guy can’t pass HIV because he doesn’t have it. And a positive guy successfully treated can’t pass HIV because there’s not enough virus to pass out from his body. So, we’re not so different after all. Asking people to be nicer won’t end HIV stigma. Making sure they know that they have nothing to fear just might.

Stephen Fallon is the Executive Director of Latinos Salud, an HIV agency that created and uses the DiversiSAFE model to help community members to stay safe from HIV, whether with condoms, PrEP, U=U, negotiated safety, or, for emergencies, PEP. Latinos Salud also helps all guys living with HIV (not just Latinos) get into and stay in care.

SEXUAL ENHANCEMENT AND ADVANCEMENT THERAPIES

AT THE GENESIS HEALTH INSTITUTE: GenWave, P-Shot, PT-141 Peptide, and Oxytocin Hormones

S

exual activity can one of our greatest life experiences. Many start enjoying their sexual journey in adolescence and hope to enjoy it until the day we die. Most of us function perfectly into our forties when we start noticing some reduction to our sexual function. It doesn’t happen overnight, but occurs gradually. We don’t wake up to that joyful wood like we used to, our desire for sex begins to wane, it becomes more difficult to achieve or keep an erection, and sometimes takes longer to climax if at all. The bottom line is, most men over 50 years old will experience some form of lessened sexual function or erectile dysfunction (ED). Having practiced in Wilton Manors for over 12 years, we at Genesis Health Institute have helped many men increase their natural libido and sexual function with simple bio-identical testosterone therapy. Now there are more targeted treatments available to optimize all areas of sex, from functionality and endurance to sensitivity and pleasure that define what true mind blowing orgasms are. There are two physiological functions that create a healthy and strong erection. One is blood flow, the other is the ability for the penis to capture and hold forced blood creating the erection. The GenWave and P-Shot treatments correct and optimize both of these functions for advanced sexual activity. GenWave is a non-invasive procedure using high frequency, low intensity sound waves to increase blood flow to the penis by removing micro plaques. This procedure activates dormant cells and nerve tissue while also stimulating the growth of new blood vessels. Treatments are easy and comfortable, typically take less than 30 minutes to perform, and there’s no downtime.

The P-Shot is a non-surgical procedure utilizing the body’s own platelet rich plasma (PRP) which contains growth factors called Cytokines and Chemokines that stimulate the growth of new blood vessels, collagen, and cellular tissue to the penis. The improved tissue presence and circulation result in enhanced sexual function including firmness strength, sensitivity, arousal, pleasure, and overall size. This painless procedure also features no downtime and typically takes about one hour to perform. A couple of other sexual enhancements that greatly increase the quality and pleasure of your sexual experience, regardless of age, medical condition, or sexual function level, are the PT-141 peptide and a daily hormone supplement of oxytocin. PT-141 peptide is an amino acid peptide that increases sexual arousal and spontaneous erections. Unlike Viagra, Cialis, and other related medications, PT-141 doesn’t act upon the vascular system, but directly through the hypothalamus to increase desire and sexual satisfaction. Patients may use this peptide regularly or for specific sexual events and each dose typically works for three days. Patients using the peptide claim to have easily achieved spontaneous erections and with an enhanced climax experience. Oxytocin, also known as the “love” or “feel good” hormone, is produced in the body by the hypothalamus and released through the pituitary gland during sex, child birth, and when first falling in love. As with most hormones, the body produces less and less as we age. With daily supplementation, patients typically experience more easily achieved, intensified, and longer lasting orgasms along with greater levels of pleasure and sexual satisfaction.

At the Genesis Health Institute, we believe quality of life is key and offer treatments individually or by an all-inclusive Sexual Enhancement and Advancement Package that includes everything mentioned above. When you’re ready to rediscover great intercourse again, give us a call at (954) 561-3175 or check out our website at www.GHInstitute.com to schedule a complimentary consultation and learn more about these incredible sex life changing treatments.

ARE YOU FAMILIAR WITH SEPSIS?

S

eptember is Sepsis Awareness month and the perfect time to learn more about this potentially devastating, often life-altering condition. It affects more than a million Americans every year, and between 15-30 percent of patients with sepsis do not survive – yet many have never heard of this condition. So, what is it? Put simply, sepsis is the body’s toxic response to an infection. It is an extreme inflammatory response that causes swelling, and is frequently caused by a bacterial or viral infection, such as pneumonia or the flu, but can also be caused by other infections that occur in the skin, lungs, urinary tract, or other parts of the body. Anyone can get sepsis, but those most at risk include: People with chronic conditions such as diabetes, lung disease, cancer, and kidney disease Adults age 65 and older People with weakened immune systems Children younger than 1 year old

Timely treatment is critical to surviving sepsis. While most physicians and nurses are trained to recognize sepsis, if you have an infection that isn’t healing, or feel worse days after a surgery, ask your provider, “Could this be sepsis?” The Sepsis Alliance recommends using TIME to assess whether a person could possibly have sepsis:

T I M E

Temperature, higher or lower than normal Infection, may have signs and symptoms of an infection Mental decline, where a person is confused, sleepy or difficult to rouse Extremely ill, where the person feels severe pain and discomfort

Sepsis is a medical emergency. If you suspect sepsis, call 9-1-1 or get to an emergency room immediately. Let the medical team know that you are concerned about sepsis. The earlier sepsis is caught, the better chance for a full recovery.

Our physician referral service can provide a wealth of information about our doctors and help you make an appointment. Find a neuro doctor now 1-833-764-5452 or visit www.FloridaMedCtr.com for more information. OutClique.com | 149

PRIDE JOURNEY Indianapolis By Joey Amato

I

ndianapolis has always felt like a second home to me. I used to publish a gay magazine there called, Unite, a few years ago, so I was frequently visiting the city. This time, I wanted to experience things that I may not have had the chance to see on previous visits. One event of major interest was the Lambda Legal Indiana Benefit gala, which took place at the Indy Public Library, a stunning building located in the heart of the city. The Indiana Benefit was conceived in 1999 by a group of visionary individuals seeking to advance the civil rights of LGBT people and those living with HIV in Indiana. That vision and dedication to Lambda Legal’s mission and work in Indiana have yielded some of the most important and strategic legal victories our community has

experienced in the past decade, including the freedom to marry. In 2017, it was an Indiana case that won a federal court victory affirming that workplace discrimination based on sexual orientation violates federal civil rights law. This year, the benefit honored philanthropists, Neil Bagadiong and Kevin Warren, the Indy power couple who was instrumental in the “Pence Must Go” campaign that was enacted during Mike Pence’s final term as Governor of the state. They also host a weekly pool party for the community at their home during the summer. After the benefit, the party continued at Tini on Massachusetts Avenue, a gay-owned martini bar which has become the city’s hotspot for the see-and-be-seen gay crowd. Mass Ave., as OutClique.com | 153

it is called by the locals, is a vibrant street lined with restaurants, boutiques and nightlife establishments catering to both a gay and straight audience. A few blocks away is Forty-Five Degrees, a beautiful gay-owned restaurant and sushi bar, which hosts numerous drag shows and LGBT benefits throughout the year including a fashion show leading up to Indianapolis Pride. After a night of partying, I headed back to my hotel, the newly renovated Hyatt Regency. The centerpiece of the property is their open-air atrium but also worth visiting is their swanky rooftop restaurant offering unobstructed views of Indianapolis. The rooms at the Hyatt were spacious and comfortable, with some rooms offering separate sleeping and living areas in addition to huge bathrooms. The next morning, I woke up early to head to The Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields for an LGBTQ photography exhibition of renowned, American photographer, George Platt Lynes. The collection of photographs is on loan from the Kinsey Institute at Indiana University. Lynes’ visionary work catapulted him to notoriety as a New York-based commercial fashion and ballet photographer, but resulted in his drift from the spotlight when it was revealed that he photographed male nudes as well. Lynes also turned his lens on his social circle, the artistic and literary minds of the mid-20th century, who accepted him as a gay man during a period of harsh anti-LGBT laws in America. The provocative photographs, include nude works, are a must see and are on exhibition through February 2020. If you’re in the mood for a quick bite, I would suggest visiting Broad Ripple, a cute neighborhood north of downtown consisting of cafes, lively brewpubs, vintage clothing stores and a live music venue called,The Vogue. Broad Ripple Park is located along the White River and is part of the Monon Rail Trail, popular with joggers and cyclists. 154 | OutClique.com

After lunch, head to the Indianapolis City Market for a guided tour of the Catacombs, a Roman-looking expanse of brick arches located beneath the market. The Catacombs qualify as both a ruin and a redevelopment opportunity. They’re what remains of Tomlinson Hall, an imposing building whose main hall seated 3,500 people. Dietrich Bohlen designed the hall in 1886 to complement his earlier work at City Market. Tomlinson Hall burned in January 1958, but the Catacombs contain scores of brick barrel-vaulted arches that remain from what was the basement of Tomlinson Hall. If you have time after visiting City Market, head to the Indianapolis Zoo for a once-in-a-lifetime experience creating art with a rhinoceros. Before meeting the rhino, guests are asked to select a color scheme for their painting and as the zookeeper tells you about the beautiful animals, the rhino begins to create a unique masterpiece with its horn over the course of about 10-15 minutes. This unforgettable experience is also available with penguins, walruses and dolphins. What many people don’t know about the zoo is that is one of the leading zoos in animal conservation in the country, awarding the prestigious Indianapolis Prize. Through a monetary award of $250,000, the Prize recognizes the accomplishments of one heroic individual who has made significant strides to save a species from extinction. The Indianapolis Prize was created by the Indianapolis Zoological Society as part of its mission to empower people and communities, locally and globally, to advance the cause of animal conservation. Past Indianapolis Prize Winners include Dr. George Archibald, the cofounder of the International Crane Foundation, George Schaller, PhD, known as one of the founding fathers of wildlife conservation, and Iain Douglas Hamilton, PhD, founder of Save the Elephants. For dinner, I headed to Tony’s, a new restaurant located across the street from the Hyatt

Regency which will make you feel as if you are dining in an upscale New York steakhouse. Instead of ordering an entrée, I decided to opt for two appetizers instead, since I was attending the Taylor Swift concert at Lucas Oil Stadium later that evening. The Calamari with pepperoncini, cherry tomatoes, and garlic aioli were light and flavorful and the Prince Edward Island Mussels in a lobster tomato saffron broth with garlic and chorizo were plump and delicious. At first glance, the prices looked a bit steep, but once the selections arrived, I realized I could have invited a few friends to share the oversized portions. I was even greeted by Tony himself during my visit. In recent years a few of Indy’s LGBT nightlife venues have shuttered but the city still offers a nice variety of establishments including Greg’s, English Ivy’s, and Metro Nightclub. Greg’s offers a dance room and patio with decently priced drinks and friendly crowd, while English Ivy’s features a full menu and separate bar area for mingling. Indianapolis is home to many LGBT organizations, most notably, Indiana Youth Group (IYG) a drop-in center for youth ages 12-20 that identify as LGBTQ+. Youth who are allies to LGBTQ+ folks are also welcome to

the facility which provides services, activities, affinity programs, referrals, and serves as a safe space for the community. The city also boasts a division of PFLAG and the Indy Rainbow Chamber, a bi-partisan group for LGBTQ business owners, employees, and allies. A little secret about Indianapolis that I find extremely intriguing is the city’s Masonic influence. Indy was designed by the same city planner as Washington DC and features many architectural structures worth visiting included the Scottish Rite Cathedral, Indiana Freemasons' Hall, a giant obelisk fountain and the Indiana War Memorial. I highly recommend taking a free tour of the Scottish Rite Cathedral led by a freemason himself who will tell you stories about the secret society and its influence in Indianapolis. Before leaving Indy, go to brunch at Milktooth, a wonderful restaurant in the Fountain Square neighborhood, which was recently named to Conde Nast Traveler’s “World’s Best Restaurant” list. The restaurant was opened in 2014 by Jonathan Brooks, and features locally sourced produce to create its delectable creations. Enjoy the journey!
