INTRODUCTION
ARTISTIC DIRECTION OF KOH SAMUI HOUSE Our focus for this art direction work is to create a vision for a lived-in, welcoming beach house merging with its natural site. We will work with natural colors, as our goal is to transform this place into a cocoon for owners or visitors to be able to feel like they belong in the space. The coolness will come from the garden that will infiltrate the house, the green of nature will complete pallets of blue, green, creamy white, sand, warmed up by the presence of wood and copper. Throughout this presentation we will present an art direction for a coherent set, evocative of a seaside Villa. We worked on moods, materials, and colors that will serve as basis for the whole project. Our approach is competed by bringing in a relatively strong Asian touch that we see as a mix of Thai, Japanese and Indonesian influences. Here is our composition, we hope that you’ll enjoy it.

To highlight the feelings of comfort, security and contentment while being by the sea, a strong opened element, we work with mixes of natural materials: wood, stone, ceramic and bronze. These materials used together will set the tone for this project, conveying a timeless simple and clear image.

For the main pavilions, we recommend using wood cladding for the ceilings in order to provide a sense of depth and modernity, along with stone of soft and delicate hues for the floors (ref photos: 06 & 11). The walls will alternatively be decorated and neutral to give rhythm to the room: Painted walls will be used to display art and neutral “unadorned� walls will be covered with materials or cladding (ref photos: 07/08)

Texture-rich material will be used to touch up bathrooms, toilets and bar tops (photo refs: 10/13/17/18).

The interior will be warmed-up by the use of bronze for some elements of decorations and lamps (photo refs: 12/19/20)

The goal is to create the perfect balance of simplicity and strong visuals. This ambiance will be established upon entering the property in order to generate a feeling of well-being through a soothing effect, bringing softness both to the eyes and sense of touch. The success in establishing such a feeling will reside in the good balancing of proportions and their implementation in a large format using effects of repetitions, lines, masses and textures.

The work on color will be an association of two different worlds complementing each other. The outdoors spaces will fix a strong trend with various shades of green and white and a specific chromatic universe for indoors which will recall sea and sea-side tones, with blue, green, sand and earth hues.

As with the work on materials, the universe that is brought by these shades, colors, tones and hues is used to create a base, a tool box that will be re-used in small hints throughout the project and then enhanced and completed with art and furniture to bring the defining Asian touch.

LIVING ROOM ATMOSPHERE

The atmosphere of the pavilion where the living room & kitchen are located will be treated as an opened living space, both very welcoming and convivial due to the planned set-up, flow, materials and colors. For the floors we will use stone or large format 120x120 cm stoneware tiles in light colors resembling the color of sand, and where it’s needed for technical or utilitarian reasons the floor will be covered in wood, carpet and/or carpeting.

For the ceiling we will use wood cladding in natural tones to bring warmth to the place. The ambiance will be enriched by a wellchosen furniture composition: a mix of soberlined, comfortable, deep sofas and individual seating suggesting organic tropical life.

The goal here is to create a blend of modern and refined Asian touches to generate a unique style revealing the owner’s personality. The use of 2 different styles (briefly summed-up as being traditional for 1 and tropical-ethnical for the other 1) will create contrast and homogeneity and at the same time allow the space not to appear overloaded or cluttered: our goal is for the elements to disappear from view, to blend-in as this pavilion has a transversal view across the garden and the pool / sea area.

Visually the kitchen will be an extension of the living room in order to avoid any visual discontinuities and to maintain coherence. The kitchen, mostly in light wood tones, will be designed and styled as a convivial gathering place.

The atmosphere of each bathroom will be personalized by adding touches of color (from our color palette or tool box) using either wall paint or colored stone.

The bathrooms will feature indoors and outdoors spaces. Light wood furniture will create a visual link between the color elements.

Bronze accessories such as mirrors will bring a warm touch. This lighting will be composed using both artificial lights, natural light and reflection light from the outdoors spaces of the bathrooms.

BEDROOM ATMOSPHERE

The atmosphere of the room will be designed to create the feeling of a protective cocoon generated by curved wood paneling.

The furniture will be mostly wood with consoles in stone or other noble materials.

Indirect light will enhance the cool protective cocoon effect that we seek by reflecting and diffusing colors on materials.

This space will be the villa’s signature, its most emblematic feature. It will be an inspired cabinet of curiosity hosting the owner personal collection of objects. This space will be set in blue tones, with paint and stone (ref photo: 65/66) The space will also be decorated with plants that will establish a connection between inside and outside. A darker space in the same tones will provide coolness and appropriate conditions for the TV lounge.

We will use indirect and diffused light effects that will not be noticeable but that will create outstanding lighting. (Refs photos: 78/79/80). The rest will consist of light installations treated as pieces of art in each room, hence bringing a signature to each space. (Refs photos: 68/71/72)

The furniture will be an association of ethnic and organic elements mixed with elements of simpler forms, to create a fusion generating a specific style. Accessories will be added to further enhance the tones of the villa and anchor it in its beach / sea-side context. The diversity of textures will boost the style of this project.

The various atmospheres will all have Asian nuances: a specific mix of Thai, Japanese and Indonesian influences. The character and personality of the premises will be revealed through various very appealing shapes and colors.
