Yoga for Athletes Training for sport can create muscular imbalances within your body. Athletes are trained to strive to be better, faster and stronger, and in pursuit of excellence tend to focus on the muscles that most directly improve performance. Each sport has its own body bias, and well-intentioned participants can inadvertently set themselves up for injury by failing to find balance between those muscle groups that get overused and underused in their sport of choice. Imbalance that goes unchecked frequently leads to injury. Most people carry a bodily imbalance of some sort: Upper to lower body (running or kayaking), side to side (tennis, rowing), front to back body (cycling). The practice of yoga revolves around restoring balance and can be a valuable tool in helping a physically active person stay active.

How Yoga Helps Yoga helps people to live better in their bodies by calling attention to inefficient body habits and establishing a more effective way of being in the world, physically and mentally. Regular practice systematically develops strength, flexibility, balance and focus. A consistent practice will help you to become more balanced in your body and in your approach to work and rest. A well-rounded, thoughtful yoga practice will teach you to slow down and identify your own imbalances and to correct them. A well-rounded practice will include standing postures, back bends, forward folds, side bends, spinal rotations, arm balancing, abdominal strengthening and inversions – to balance your body from top to bottom, front to back and side to side. A con-

sistent practice that addresses the entire body will diminish muscular imbalances created through your sport. If you have short, tight hip flexors (runners, cyclists, kayakers take note), a yoga practice that includes lunging and back-bending poses will help to restore the balance of strength and flexibility required for healthy, balanced range of motion in the hips. Arm balancing and core strengthening practices can begin to correct imbalances in strength between the upper and lower body, and so on. Balancing Work and Rest For athletes, hard workout days and recovery days are both a necessary part of the training. The body needs to be subjected to stress (training) in order to grow stronger and faster, but it is during the rest and recovery phase of training that the body adapts to the stressors. This is the ‘yin’ and ‘yang’ of training. Be sure that your rest and recovery periods are in proportion to the strain with which you train. Yoga can be an important part of your recovery strategy. As you approach the peak in your training schedule, make time for a practice that emphasizes rest and recovery. In Restorative yoga, you give your nervous system a break from the stresses of training, and offer yourself the opportunity to relax, refresh and recover. Balanced Effort A skilled teacher can also help you to identify those unconscious responses to physical stress that waste energy and

decrease efficiency. When you’re practicing on your yoga mat, notice whether you’re exerting more effort than you need to in order to accomplish a pose and whether your shoulders hike up or your jaw and fists clench in response to physical stress. As you become more ‘self aware’, you can adapt to spend your energy more wisely, waste less energy and move more efficiently. This skill is naturally transferred into physical sport. Balancing Competition with Pleasure If you’re competitive by nature, you may bring your sense of competition to your yoga mat as well – the familiar urge to perfect, to push further and to be the best may surface – pushing too hard in yoga practice can undermine your other training goals. See if you can use your yoga practice as an opportunity to practice turning on the ‘off switch’ on your drive to be the best and find the balance between pushing yourself physically and movement just for the pleasure of it. On the surface, yoga and competitive sport may seem at odds with each other. While sport emphasizes doing more and pushing harder, yoga emphasizes quieting, resting and stillness. Yoga and sport both use the physical body but in very different ways and towards very different ends. It’s this difference that makes yoga the perfect compliment to athletic training. A consistent yoga practice can help correct imbalances created by your training and bring balance to your training schedule. - Amanda Tripp is an E-RYT 200 and instructs at Yoga By Sarah in St. Catharines.
