The Western Isles of Lewis, Harris, Uists, Benbecula and Barra LEWIS (and Harris) has superb beaches on their western shores, shown on the maps on pages 2 & 5. One notable beach is at Uig, not just because of its extensive golden sands, but also because of a discovery of a Viking Chess set in a small stone chamber at the edge of the beach. Inside were 93 Chess pieces made of Morse Ivory, from the husks of Walrus teeth. On the opposite side of the bay to the shop, is an access point to the beach with toilets facilities. Further along the road is a small distillery called Abhainn Dearg, or Red River.

ISLE OF GREAT BERNERA is a small island connected to Lewis by a bridge on the B8059. At Bostah in the north west, the island has a wonderful beach, and an ‘Iron Age’ village. One of the Iron Age houses has been superbly rebuilt, and entry is available during the summer. The island also has its own museum and cafe at Breacleit, situated within the community centre. The island has many antiquities including standing stones, duns and a restored Norse Mill.
