TABLE OF CONTENTS ESSENTIALS
FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR For more than three decades Outfest has been a leader in LGBT rights and cultural expression, ensuring that LGBT stories are created, shared and protected: stories that depict the rich diversity of who we are as individuals, families and communities; stories that educate, entertain and inspire. This year’s Outfest Los Angeles is no exception. Our Gala features range from the humorous writing of David Sedaris in C.O.G. to the slow pace of a Texas town in PIT STOP, from the injustices against LGBT people in GOD LOVES UGANDA to the poetry of Elizabeth Bishop in REACHING FOR THE MOON, and finally to the rallying activism of ALICE WALKER: BEAUTY IN TRUTH. Our 31st edition – featuring 155 films from 28 countries – soars with new talent and old friends. Each section of the festival promises an extraordinary experience. Our international voices span the globe, with documentaries and narrative features from Poland, China and Nepal (a first!) including award-winners BWAKAW and IN THE NAME OF... A number of Outfest alumni return with delightful new films: Rose Troche, Jamie Babbit, Del Shores, Darren Stein, Rodney Evans and more. And where else will you catch the Los Angeles premiere of Andy Warhol’s last film, SAN DIEGO SURF?
Los Angeles isn’t the only place you can find Outfest. This September 6–11 we present NewFest in New York, part of a strategic partnership with NewFest and Film Society of Lincoln Center.

C.O.G.
OPENING NIGHT GALA
Dir/Scr: Kyle Patrick Alvarez, 2013, USA, 88 min.
The first feature based on the writings of best-selling author David Sedaris, C.O.G. captures the living legend’s stringently funny perspective and cements director Kyle Patrick Alvarez as a gifted young storyteller. Recent college graduate David (Jonathan Groff, “Glee”) decides to get close to nature, and the working class, by spending a summer picking apples in Oregon with his friend Jennifer (Troian Bellisario, “Pretty Little Liars’’). Even after she blows him off, he charges ahead on a picaresque journey that will take him from orchard to processing plant to an arts and crafts workshop, guided along the way by an increasingly eccentric and motley bunch of mentors. Whether trying to interpret the possible flirtations of co-worker Curly (Corey Stoll, “House of Cards”) or resisting the religious hard-sell from Bible-thumping Jon (Denis O’Hare, “True Blood”), David finds himself on the most complicated path of all — figuring out who he is and what he wants. The stunning ensemble cast includes Casey Wilson (‘‘Happy Endings’’), Dean Stockwell (BLUE VELVET) and Dale Dickey (WINTER’S BONE). Outfest is honored to open its 31st film festival with this bitingly witty coming of age tale anchored in warmth and insight.
Kyle Patrick Alvarez is a 29-year-old, Los Angeles-based writer-director. His second feature film is C.O.G., which is based on a story by David Sedaris, and which premiered in competition at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. In 2010, his screenwriting and directorial debut, EASIER WITH PRACTICE, won him the prestigious “Someone to Watch” Award at the Independent Spirit Awards while also being nominated for Best First Feature.

THE 17TH ANNUAL OUTFEST ACHIEVEMENT AWARD: KIMBERLY PEIRCE If Hollywood has a tendency to pigeonhole filmmakers, it’s downright insistent on wedging queer female directors into a very limited space. Over the last 15 years, however, writer-director Kimberly Peirce has managed to elude the box, operating in a variety of genres with a gift for genuine characterization and storytelling. Peirce burst onto the scene with 1999’s BOYS DON’T CRY, a compelling retelling of the life and death of transman Brandon Teena. Hilary Swank won a well-deserved Best Actress Oscar for her powerful, gimmickfree portrayal of Brandon, and the film was showered with awards from critics and festivals worldwide. Kudos aside, BOYS DON’T CRY announced to the world a powerful, singular voice, a promise that Peirce fulfilled with her compelling follow-up, STOP-LOSS (2008). Peirce’s look at the trials of U.S. soldiers being sent back into combat once again demonstrated a gift for portraying working-class concerns without condescension. While Peirce’s work often uncovers painful truths, it also inspires viewers to pursue their own bliss and to overcome their own obstacles. She is one of the leading chroniclers of the LGBT experience, but her sense of humanity touches all of her characters. With her eagerly awaited take on Stephen King’s CARRIE, due out later this year, and several screenplays of various genres in development, Peirce’s career promises to take her — and us — to any number of destinations, guided by her sure and steady hand. Previous recipients of the Outfest Achievement Award: 2012 · John Waters | 2011 · Fenton Bailey & Randy Barbato | 2010 · Jane Lynch | 2009 · Don Roos | 2008 · Donna Deitch | 2007 · Bill Condon | 2006 · Kenneth Anger | 2005 · Gregg Araki | 2004 · Todd Haynes | 2003 · Jane Anderson | 2002 · Strand Releasing | 2001 · Christine Vachon | 2000 · Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman | 1999 · Gus Van Sant | 1998 · Ian McKellen | 1997 · John Schlesinger

PIT STOP
GOD LOVES UGANDA
The modest lives of two rugged Texans intertwine in Yen Tan’s refreshingly grounded, quietly sexy PIT STOP. A 2009 Outfest Screenwriting Lab project that blossomed into a 2013 Sundance darling, Tan’s yarn moves through a blue-collar town and observes how a handsome contractor named Gabe (Bill Heck), spends time with his ex-wife Shannon (Amy Seimetz, UPSTREAM COLOR) and their daughter. Across town, Ernesto (Marcus DeAnda) ignores his flagging relationship with a much younger man and sits vigil at the bedside of an ailing ex. When Ernesto and Gabe meet unexpectedly one day at a local gas station, a connection forms that has the potential to alter both of their lives for good. In his touching follow-up to CIAO, writer-director Yen Tan provides an evocative glimpse into the everyday lives of two Southern men seeking love and affection over aching solitude. As far from the beaten path as its protagonists, this dreamy feature is a different kind of love story with depth, clarity and no shortage of sexual tension.
As virulently antigay American evangelicals find less of an audience for their hateful message at home, they have sought a new demographic in Africa. This surprisingly funny and infuriating new documentary from Academy Award winner Roger Ross Williams examines how the nation of Uganda has thrown open its arms to discredited and oblivious ministers who, in deadpan interviews, appear completely unaware of how their teachings have induced politicians to put forward the country’s infamous “kill the gays” legislation. But the film also introduces us to Ugandan clergy who, both at home and abroad, are risking excommunication and even death to defend the unpopular cause of LGBT equality. From its chilling examination of state-sanctioned bigotry to its darkly comical one-on-ones with bright-eyed, tone-deaf missionaries, GOD LOVES UGANDA provides powerful insight into the ignorance (cloaked in religion) exported by the United States to the rest of the world.

REACHING FOR THE MOON
ALICE WALKER: BEAUTY IN TRUTH
Veteran filmmaker Bruno Barreto (DONA FLOR AND HER TWO HUSBANDS) returns with a steamy tale of an unlikely romance between two extraordinary lesbian artists, set against the backdrop of political upheaval and a clash of cultures. Grappling with writer’s block, legendary American poet Elizabeth Bishop (Miranda Otto) travels to 1950s Rio de Janeiro to visit her college friend, Mary (Tracy Middendorf). Hoping to find inspiration on Mary’s sprawling estate, Elizabeth winds up with much more — a tempestuous relationship with Mary’s bohemian partner, architect Lota de Macedo Soares (Glória Pires), that rocks the staid writer to her foundation. Alcoholism, geographical distance and a military coup come between the lovers, but their intimate connection would span decades and forever impact the life and work of these two extraordinary artists. The attraction of two polar-opposite women has rarely been so volatile and so erotically charged on the big screen.
Alice Walker’s extraordinary journey from sharecropper’s daughter to activist, journalist, poet and Pulitzer Prize–winning novelist of The Color Purple comes to vivid life in this compelling and inspirational documentary. Courting controversy through her life choices (relationships with white men, and later with women), her work and her outspoken political advocacy, Walker emerges as a vibrant, fiercely intelligent and dedicated woman who has defied the odds to become one of this generation’s most fascinating figures. Her personal and professional accomplishments, reflected against a period of progress, violence and upheaval, celebrate fulfillment and self-expression against forces that conspire to silence and marginalize outsiders. Featuring testimonials from collaborators and peers (including Steven Spielberg, Yoko Ono, Sapphire, Gloria Steinem, Jewelle Gomez, Quincy Jones and Peter Guber) as well as intimate interviews with Walker herself, director Pratibha Parmar offers rare insight into a complicated and provocative artist.

Rio-born, Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Bruno Barreto has directed 18 films, including FOUR DAYS IN SEPTEMBER, LAST STOP 174, BOSSA NOVA, CARRIED AWAY, A SHOW OF FORCE, VIEW FROM THE TOP, TATI, MONEY ON THE SIDE and ROMEO AND JULIET GOT MARRIED. His comedy DONA FLOR AND HER TWO HUSBANDS was Brazil’s highest-grossing film until 2011, with more than 12 million tickets sold. In 2006, he directed Brazil’s first stage production of John Patrick Shanley’s “Doubt”.
Filmmaker Pratibha Parmar has an exemplary track record for her passionate commitment to making films with integrity and illuminating untold stories with visual flair and imagination. Many of her films have screened at Fusion and Outfest, and her credits include A PLACE OF RAGE, featuring Angela Davis and June Jordan, and WARRIOR MARKS, made in collaboration with Alice Walker, which documented female genital mutilation at a time when the subject was still globally taboo. NINA’S HEAVENLY DELIGHTS, Parmar’s narrative feature film debut, was nominated for a GLAAD Award.

There could be no better way to close this year’s festival than with G.B.F., a groundbreaking twist on the classic teen comedy. When closet-case Tanner (Michael J. Willett) is outed by his high school’s overeager GSA, he becomes a hot commodity for three teen queens who believe that a G.B.F. – “gay best friend” – is this season’s must-have accessory. More powerful than any bullies, fashionista Fawcett (Sasha Pieterse, “Pretty Little Liars”), drama queen Caprice (Xosha Roquemore, PRECIOUS) and Mormon ’Shley (Andrea Bowen, “Desperate Housewives”) stop at nothing to score Tanner as their pet, even if it means driving a wedge between him and his real G.B.F. Brent (Paul Iacono, “The Hard Times of RJ Berger”). Director Darren Stein’s flashy, hilarious comedy about the changing landscape of high school acceptance features a riotously funny performance by “Will & Grace” star Megan Mullally, the most quotable one-liners since MEAN GIRLS, and ingenious references to your favorite teen films and shows, including SIXTEEN CANDLES, CARRIE and “Glee”. So invite your G.B.F.s, B.F.F.s, BFs, GFs, FBs and tell your GPS to take you to Closing Night. We promise it’ll be totes amazeballs!

Outfest supports and promotes LGBT equality by ensuring that our stories are told. This year’s slate of documentaries feature a slew of heroes and role models who have fought tenaciously to create a more enlightened society. They have shown us all a path toward a better, more just and equal world. Whether they’re artists (Alice Walker, Gore Vidal, Divine, James Broughton, James Booker) or activists (Bamby Salcedo, Elizabeth Taylor, Kathie Hiers, Shane Bitney Crone), comedians (Ian Harvie) or athletes (Diana Nyad), clergy (Rev. Russell (Cameron Deane Stewart, PITCH PERFECT) is your average closeted high school teen looking for love. Enter Kevin (Justin Deeley, “90210”), the school’s hunkiest football jock. Things get complicated when both Kevin and Russell do things they don’t want to in order to hide who they are. Russell seeks advice from the Geography Club, actually a secret GSA filled with a hilarious collection of misfits. As the closet grows harder to maintain, Russell has to decide whether or not to come out – even if it means losing Kevin. Smart, assured and stylish, with supporting performances by Ana Gasteyer (“SNL”), Alex Newell (“Glee”) and Nikki Blonsky (HAIRSPRAY), the debut feature from the Entin twins represents a big (and very hot) step forward in the gay-teen comedy genre.
College boy Doc (Tanner Cohen, WERE THE WORLD MINE) is obsessed with a well-known NYC go-go boy (Matthew Camp). He befriends his hunky crush with the intention of shooting a documentary about what it’s like to live in his skin. But as they grow closer, flirtation blurs the line between subject and filmmaker until a steamy night together solidifies deeper feelings. Cory Krueckeberg’s explicit directorial debut explores the thrill and danger of getting exactly what you wished for.
The course of true love runs anything but smoothly in this new romantic drama from acclaimed writer-director Rodney Evans (BROTHER TO BROTHER). Annie dumps Stan, who flirts with Marcus, who’s in a relationship with Aaron that may or not be open. Meanwhile, Annie is drawn toward her interesting (and interested) lesbian friend Mandy and discovers she might want Stan back after all. Evans provocatively examines the politics and protocols of open relationships with wit, wisdom and candid sexuality.

For two small-town teenagers in love, this is that one last summer they will spend together before going their separate ways. Baseball star Luke knows that the intelligent Jonah will go off to college in the fall, and over the course of the next few months these boyfriends will lose themselves in nature, bicycle rides and each other while they still can. With echoes of Terrence Malick, writer-director Mark Thiedeman offers up a debut feature that balances haunting beauty with adolescent passion. SPONSORED BY

Freespirited young lesbian Andy (writer-director Drew Denny) and her reserved childhood friend Liv (Sarah Hagan, “Freaks and Geeks”) are traveling across the Southwest to disperse Andy’s father’s ashes. Starting out building campfires, drinking, snuggling and reminiscing about the good old days, tensions arise as the trip progresses, forcing them to examine the core of their relationship. Are they friends or something more? Denny’s autobiographical comedy about connection, the open road, and yes, how to have fun with your pants on, is a joyride of sweet twists and turns.

IT’S ALL SO QUIET
Dir: Malgoska Szumowska, Scr: Malgoska Szumowska, Michal Englert, 2013, Poland, subtitled, 102 min.
Dir/Scr: Nanouk Leopold, 2013, Germany/ Netherlands, subtitled, 93 min.
Father Adam is the talk of the small Polish town he’s assigned to. Handsome, strong and unfazed by a violent group of local teens, he’s idolized and occasionally hit on by local men and women alike. It’s only when the brooding and beautiful Lukasz, an orphan and accused arsonist, falls into his arms one hot summer day, that Father Adam feels the sudden pang of repressed desire. Soon his feelings of lust give way to love, setting off suspicion within the tight-knit, conservative community. Shot in glowing, golden sunlight and set within the sprawling fields and forests of Poland, Malgoska Szumowska’s sumptuous drama (2013 Teddy Award winner for Best Feature Film) teems with sensuality and tension.
Nanouk Leopold’s quietly powerful feature takes place on an isolated Dutch farm overseen by a lonely man named Helmer. Forced to look after the land and to tend to his ailing father, Helmer has long accepted pain and solitude as inevitable aspects of life. But his weary soul gets a lift when a farmhand arrives one afternoon looking for work. The young man awakens feelings in Helmer that prompt him, for the first time in years, to reconsider his self-inflicted isolation. IT’S ALL SO QUIET is a beautifully shot film made even stronger by its riveting performances.

SOONGAVA: DANCE OF THE ORCHIDS
SUDDENLY, LAST SUMMER/GOING SOUTH
Dir/Scr: Subarna Thapa, 2012, Nepal/France, subtitled, 85 min.
A country wrestling with rampant LGBT abuse, Nepal has just released its first-ever explicitly gay-themed film, the sensual and emotionally rich SOONGAVA: DANCE OF THE ORCHIDS. Two girls, Diya and Kiran, fall into a secret love affair just as one is being forced into an arranged marriage. Madly in love and unwilling to put up with the strict societal restraints imposed upon them, they decide to run off together and, in the process, rid themselves of a community they can no longer call home.
SUDDENLY, LAST SUMMER Dir: Leesong Hee-il, 2012, South Korea, subtitled, 37 min. GOING SOUTH Dir: Leesong Hee-il, 2012, South Korea, subtitled, 45 min.
The tension between rage and desire simmer beneath every frame of SUDDENLY, LAST SUMMER and GOING SOUTH, two sexually charged films from up-and-coming Korean filmmaker Leesong Hee-il. In SUDDENLY, LAST SUMMER, a teacher gets blackmailed into entertaining a love-struck student hellbent on getting him into bed. A similar power struggle emerges in GOING SOUTH after a sergeant kidnaps his superior on their way back to an army base with hopes the two will run off together. Both narratives take fascinating turns that force the audience to re-evaluate who’s the victim and who’s the aggressor. PRE-SCREENING RECEPTION: DGA Atrium

AFTER TILLER Dir: Martha Shane, Lana Wilson, Scr: Greg O’Toole, Martha Shane, Lana Wilson, 2012, USA, 87 min.
To work as one of the four remaining thirdtrimester abortion doctors in the United States is to live with daily threats and constant condemnation from pro-life activists. After the Kansas-based Dr. George Tiller was murdered in 2009, his remaining colleagues, including lesbian physician Dr. Shelley Sella, must cope with a difficult and widely misunderstood profession that is based entirely on saving women’s lives and protecting their well-being. With unflinching candidness and empathy, AFTER TILLER, which premiered at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, highlights the devastating choices both doctors and patients must make as well as the vitriol and judgment they must endure from those who see them as nothing more than murderers.

Brilliant gay jazz pianist James Booker was known at various points in his career as the Black Liberace, the Ivory Emperor and Little Chopin. Yet his incredible, tumultuous life has never received proper attention – until now. Director Lily Keber’s portrait traces Booker’s life from his early years as a chart-topping child prodigy to the end, where he performed onstage in his underwear, dishing out drug-fueled conspiracy theories. Featuring interviews with the likes of Harry Connick Jr., Irma Thomas and Allen Toussaint, as well as a generous helping of archival footage, the film brings to life the unforgettable story of this amazing musician.

BEFORE YOU KNOW IT
BIG JOY: THE ADVENTURES OF JAMES BROUGHTON
BORN THIS WAY
Dir: PJ Raval, 2013, USA, 110 min.
Wisecracking Robert runs the oldest surviving gay bar in Texas. Dennis looks for love after a lifetime of being in the closet about his sexuality and his cross-dressing. Ty manages a gay senior advocacy group in NYC and hopes his boyfriend will pop the question once the state legalizes gay marriage. Director PJ Raval (TRINIDAD) takes a heartfelt look at three stories of the everyday struggles that come with aging. Though these unique men resist easy classification, Raval’s compelling film sounds a much-needed alarm about the care and kindness we must give our LGBT elders – before it’s too late.
Dir: Eric Slade, Stephen Silha, Dawn Logsdon, 2012, USA, 83 min.
A leading light in the postwar San Francisco Renaissance, James Broughton was an omnisexual poet and filmmaker. His reverence for unbridled joy through childlike creativity and silliness put him perfectly in tune with the flowering of free-spirited experimentation in the 1960s, of which his film THE BED (1968) is a cultural milestone. BIG JOY features a wealth of archival footage and original interviews with key people from Broughton’s life, including poignant testimony from his wife as well as the younger male lover with whom he found a powerful connection late in life.

Suspenseful and riveting, BORN THIS WAY had its premiere at the 2013 Berlin International Film Festival. Shot in Cameroon, where homosexuality is punishable with a five-year prison sentence, the film observes Gertrude, a young lesbian, as she hesitantly comes out to the nun who raised her in a convent. Meanwhile, Cedric, a young gay man, is determined to stay in his home even as his neighbors escalate their violent threats. From their base in an HIV treatment center, these two brave souls risk life and liberty to create positive momentum for LGBT rights, even as they face overwhelming personal struggles.

Dir: Malcolm Ingram, 2012, USA/Canada, 95 min.
In BRIDEGROOM, director Linda Bloodworth Thomason (“Designing Women”) navigates the romantic highs of Tom and Shane’s relationship – until tragedy strikes. Immediately after, Tom’s conservative parents block Shane off from all contact, refusing to let Shane attend Tom’s funeral. But instead of conceding, Shane vows to tell his and Tom’s love story to the world. First on Youtube, his video “It Could Happen to You” attracted 3.4 million views. Now, as a remarkable, heart-felt feature about love, loss and the courage to stand up for same-sex equality, Shane’s story has taken the nation by storm, already snagging the Heineken Audience Award at the Tribeca Film Festival.
Larger-than-life entrepreneur Steve Ostrow tells the story of how he dreamed up the Continental Baths in 1968, when he was married, starting to come out, and had a federal court case hanging over his head. With little to lose, he opened the first customer-friendly gay bathhouse, which became a cultural phenomenon. It was a vortex of sexual liberation, glamour and incendiary social change – first helping to legalize homosexuality in New York City and later, with its legendary cabaret, launching the careers of such stars as Labelle, Barry Manilow and Bette Midler. CONTINENTAL is directed by Malcolm Ingram, winner of the Grand Jury Award at Outfest 2006 for his documentary SMALL TOWN GAY BAR.

Dir: Liam Sullivan, Scr: Ian Harvie, 2013, USA, 71 min.
Dir/Scr: Nicholas Wrathall, 2013, USA, 89 min.
Defiantly out of the closet well before it was socially acceptable, Gore Vidal alternately charms and infuriates in this wickedly funny and insightful documentary about one of America’s great thinkers. A natural aristocrat from a powerful family, Vidal seemed destined for politics, but instead became a novelist. After getting blacklisted in the 40s for writing pioneering gay novel The City and the Pillar, Vidal spent much of his life spitting elegantly phrased, vitriolic truths at the American political establishment. Just before Vidal passed, director Nicholas Wrathall captured the author’s singular wit in candid one-on-one interviews that reveal the volatile genius behind this one-of-a-kind iconoclast and provocateur. Bullied throughout his childhood for being chubby and gay, Harris Glenn Milstead didn’t seem like a likely candidate for stardom. But when John Waters turned him into the terrifying and glamorous Divine, and cast him in the stillshocking PINK FLAMINGOS, he went from outsider to one of the 20th century’s most legendary cult figures. I AM DIVINE features interviews with key people in Divine’s life, including Waters and the late Frances Milstead, Divine’s mother, plus a wealth of film clips and thrilling footage of Divine’s inimitable live performances. DIVINE is the latest film from esteemed director Jeffrey Schwarz (VITO). PRE-SCREENING RECEPTION: DGA Atrium AFTER-PARTY: Fubar SPONSORED BY
You may know Ian Harvie as Margaret Cho’s opening act, a cross-country headliner or a groundbreaking trans-comedian unafraid to joke about subjects no other comedian has ever touched. Now Harvie (with the help of executive producer Cho) unveils his first-ever live standup comedy special, poking fun at topics from top surgery to his fear of public restrooms to his active sex life. Harvie’s unique act queers the traditionally macho, sex-obsessed world of stand up in ways you won’t believe, proving that laughter cuts across all gender identities and ultimately unites us all. BOYS’ SHORTS
GIRL FIGHT OR FLIGHT
Our signature collection of funny, super-sexy, entertaining shorts helps us celebrate our love for boys who love boys. Whether it’s confused childhoods, young romance, crushing on best friends, yearning for lost loves or awkward sexual escapades, you’ll be reminded of the wild journey we all share. It may not always be sunshine and roses, but in the end, with a little luck, we always find our inner superstar.
These films tap into tender spots we might run from, fight over or want to keep hidden from view. But our heroines don’t flee from looming threats or shrink from the scary unknown – they face fear or loss head-on, whether with humor or anger, and sometimes with the help of some very precocious friends.

SURF is the last film in which Warhol was directly involved (he was shot by Valerie Solanas one month after principal photography); it was not completed until 1996, when the Warhol Foundation commissioned Morrissey to compose a final edit based on rough prints and existing notes and released the title in 2013. CRIMINAL QUEERS
Dir/Scr: Shelly Silver, 2013, USA, subtitled, 68 min.
Dir: Chris E. Vargas, Eric A. Stanley, 2013, USA, 70 min.
After 50 years away, a gay man returns to his birthplace -- New York City’s Chinatown -- to care for his dying mother. Like him, the city has changed and yet the past still haunts his familiar streets. TOUCH is a poignant and lyrical video diary, a tapestry of vérité camerawork, stolen moments and probing observations, challenging the manner in which we engage with the communities that created us and how we embrace and chronicle images of the everyday.
Prison abolition in wigs and heels! In this semisequel to HOMOTOPIA (shown at Outfest 2007), an underground network of radical queers plots to break out co-conspirator Lucy from jail, arrested for being “another young AfricanAmerican male in a dress” – or maybe it was bombing that gay wedding. This political farce, featuring Angela Davis, confronts the prisonindustrial complex, busting everything from the HRC to former S.F. mayor Gavin Newsom while spectacularly springing an entire inmate population from prison.

This is how the world ends? Films included in LAST DANCE queer our Armageddon via explosive clip art, 16mm educational films, hypnosis, Stevie Nicks and, yes, Madonna. As A.K. Burns hangs in the balance by an S&M harness, Josh Thorson grapples with a pesky tween neighbor destined to star in his apocalyptic grad school film. Everything ends with the live performance of ELATION 4, a Futurist New Age opera by Colin Self (Chez Deep, NYC). HEALING Dir: Stephanie Barber, 12 min. IPSE DIXIT Dir: Harry Dodge, 4 min. A DAY FOR CAKE AND ACCIDENTS Dir: Steve Reinke, Jessie Mott, 4 min. LAST MEN Dir: Adam Shecter, 6 min. IF THERE BE THORNS Dir: Michael Robinson, 13 min. INSIDE VELVET K Dir: Luther Price, 10 min. TABLEAU Dir: Nao Bustamante, 18 min. EARTHSHIP 2013 Dir: A.K. Burns, 8 min. ELATION 4 Performer: Colin Self, 25 min.
Dir: Charles Atlas, 2012, Denmark/USA, 76 min.
Thirteen spinning “beauties,” one angelic voice and the legendary lens of video artist Charles Atlas (THE LEGEND OF LEIGH BOWERY) make this a concert film unlike any other. Shot during Antony and the Johnsons’ 2006 European tour, performed alongside live video portraits, this experimental documentary portrays trans- and cis-gendered subjects including Kembra Pfahler (The Voluptuous Horror of Karen Black), Nomi Ruiz (Hercules and Love Affair), Honey Dijon and Johanna Constantine. TURNING features live performances of Antony and the Johnsons favorites “Hope There’s Someone,” “You Are My Sister” and “I Fell In Love with a Dead Boy.”

PLATINUM SECTION
To avoid an X rating, 40 minutes of footage was cut from the controversial 1980 gay slasher movie CRUISING. In a provocative reimagining of this censored material, directors Travis Mathews (I WANT YOUR LOVE) and James Franco create an explicit and steamy documentary film-within-a-film about gay sex and masculinity. As the straight lead, Val, prepares to assume the Al Pacino position, he is forced to confront his own sexual boundaries and discomforts, which flare as he pushes deeper into this iconic gay interior. The film had its world premiere at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival.
