Indie Music

There are so many milestones to celebrate this year! We’re doing so with films and special events for the fifth year of the Outfest Legacy Project for LGBT Film Preservation, and the 25th anniversaries of Wolfe Releasing and the City of West Hollywood.

We have three great music docs on The Magnetic Fields, Le Tigre and The Topp Twins. We’re especially excited about The Topp Twins doc about New Zealand’s twin lesbian folksinging duo (it’s no surprise this film picked up an audience award at the Toronto International Film Festival last year).

It’s an exciting year for our big, hairy friends! Whether you’re a chaser or a bear yourself (or just a curious bystander), check out the documentary BEAR NATION (by Malcolm Ingram, 2006 Outfest Grand Jury Prize Winner for his doc SMALL TOWN GAY BAR) and BEARCITY, a sexy, funny dramatic feature by Doug Langway.

We can’t say this every year, but this is a big year for lesbian films, ladies (and guys who love a good lezzie flick). Girls in prison, alien chicks, SM babes and don’t forget the new Nicole Conn movie. Just scan the film guide for cute girls (we know that’s what you do anyway), buy your tickets and prove to us that there’s an audience supporting these films!

Dance Dan c e R e vo l u t i o n

I love a good dance scene, and some of the best can be found in LEADING LADIES (with Benji Schwimmer from “Dancing with the Stars”) and our closing night gala film, SPORK.

Family Fun D ay

We wanted to show how talented and clever the youngest members of the Outfest community are! Made by kids and their parents, these short films were submitted to us by Outfest families. We dare you not to say “Awww…” when you’re watching this program.

Lesbians

P l a t i nu m

There’s some exciting stuff happening over at REDCAT, including a film about William S. Burroughs, a program curated by Campbell Ex from London, and what’s Original Plumbing? Come downtown and see.

P r o g r a m m e r ’s Pe t s

I want to make sure everybody pays attention to international films in the program like THE LAST SUMMER OF LA BOYITA, THE EVENING DRESS and PAULISTA, and the short film programs (including one of most creative program titles in Outfest history, courtesy of shorts programmer Jon Korn).

As in James Franco. It’s hard not to be totally smitten. Not only does he star in this year’s opening night film, HOWL, he directed a naughty short film, THE FEAST OF STEPHEN.

Free Scree n i n g

What’s gay about A SMALL ACT? Nothing, except that it’s directed, produced and shot by two filmmakers from the Outfest community, Jennifer Arnold and Patti Lee. We’re proud to highlight filmmakers we can claim as our own, not to mention that this doc has the power to make the world a better place.

HOWL

Dir/Scr: Jeffrey Friedman & Rob Epstein 2010, USA, 90 min. With James Franco, David Strathairn, Jon Hamm, Mary-Louise Parker, Jeff Daniels, Alessandro Nivola, Treat Williams, Bob Balaban

We are proud to open Outfest 2010 with HOWL, a hypnotic journey through the interwoven stories of Allen Ginsberg’s personal quest for liberation, the historical court case against his poem and the power of Howl as a work of art. HOWL begins in San Francisco in 1955 as 29-year-old Allen Ginsberg (James Franco) first recites his bebop inspired poem Howl to a riveted audience in Gallery Six. When published by Lawrence Ferlinghetti of City Lights Books, the drug-inspired imagery and explicit references to gay sex in the poem become the focus of the famous obscenity trial against Ferlinghetti and, not surprisingly, help Howl become one of the most prominent and notorious works of the Beat Generation. Through his relationships with three crucial men, the film explores Ginsberg’s self-realization. Not only does Ginsberg fall in love with fellow writers Jack Kerouac, Neal Cassady and Peter Orlovsky (who becomes Ginsberg’s life partner), but together the men inspire each other to live and work spontaneously and freely. Ultimately, along with the other Beats, they give birth to an American counterculture. HOWL is the first dramatic feature film from veteran documentary filmmakers Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman (THE TIMES OF HARVEY MILK, COMMON THREADS: STORIES FROM THE QUILT, THE CELLULOID CLOSET, PARAGRAPH 175). In telling Ginsberg’s story, Epstein and Friedman boldly translate the poem into a cinematic experience (with original animation by Eric Drooker, who collaborated with Ginsberg on his Illuminated Poems), recreate the life and times of Ginsberg and showcase James Franco in a revelatory performance as the young poet. HOWL as a film is a wholly creative and unabashedly sexually charged approach to the literary work, and in its tribute to Allen Ginsberg and Howl, it’s a powerful reminder of the possibility and magnitude of art. - Kim Yutani, Director of Programming

THE OWLS

UNDERTOW (CONTRACORRIENTE)

THE OWLS (the acronym for Older Wiser Lesbians), a hybrid narrative thriller/documentary, takes an unprecedented look at the generational gap between middle-aged lesbians - who paved the way in the '80s and '90s - and their 20-something counterparts.

With the measured patience of a seasoned filmmaker, writer/director Javier Fuentes-Le贸n's feature debut is a haunting tribute to the power of the heart and the painful consequences of love denied. From a script he developed as an Outfest Screenwriting Lab fellow in 2003 and set in an exotic Peruvian fishing village, the film's romantic complications, familial assembly and loyalty to tradition evoke Shakespearean themes.

Dir: Cheryl Dunye, Scr: Sarah Schulman, Cheryl Dunye, 2010, USA, 66 min.

The OWLs are former rock stars Iris (Guinevere Turner) and Lily (Lisa Gornick), who love their alcohol and still attempt to party like it's 1994. Lily's relationship with her girlfriend Carol (Cheryl Dunye) is a little unstable, and MJ (V.S. Brodie) carries a torch for Iris. When the middleaged parliament encounter Cricket (Deak Evgenikos), a 20-something dyke who has little respect for the self-proclaimed trailblazing ladies, tragedy ensues, sending the OWLs into a tailspin. Director Cheryl Dunye (THE WATERMELON WOMAN) and novelist Sarah Schulman workshopped THE OWLS script with the cast and crew. Scripted scenes and the out-of-character actors provide insight into their roles and their own lives, exploring a multitude of timely and provocative themes in this truly innovative and remarkable film. - Kirsten Schaffer, Executive Director CENTERPIECE POST-RECEPTION: DGA Atrium AFTER-PARTY: O-Bar

Dir/Scr: Javier Fuentes-Le贸n, 2009, Peru/Colombia/France/Germany, subtitled, 100 min.

Bound to a tradition that forbids his love for another man, Miguel (Cristian Mercado in a hot-blooded performance) is forced to live a secret life that, when exposed, threatens to dismantle his family and circle of friends. Miguel's passionate and steamy affair with local painter Santiago sates his sexual desires, but he is torn between his duty to his wife and his love for Santiago. After a tragic accident, Miguel must come to terms with his contradicting feelings, building to a bold declaration of love that will set free Santiago and himself, and transform the village. The turbulent waters and rocky shoreline beautifully echo Miguel's inner tumult and complement the spare storytelling. Waves crash incessantly onscreen and off, but it's the fervent spirit of this film that resonates loudest. SPORK

Dir/Scr: J.B. Ghuman, 2009, USA, 90 min.

High school’s awful enough already, but it’s even more of a challenge when you’re a four-eyed self-described hermaphrodite with a gigantic mop of untamed frizzy hair. And so, like the utensil for which she’s named, Spork doesn’t fit comfortably into any of the available compartments. Her best friend Tootsie Roll is the baddest dancer for miles around, but when she injures herself (hair product + gym floor = accident waiting to happen), it’s up to Spork to brush up on her vintage hip-hop moves and save the day, even if the evil Betsy Byotch and her cadre of high-school harpies have other plans. A wonderfully whackedout debut for actor-turned–writer-director J.B. Ghuman, Jr., SPORK is an equal opportunity offender that boasts fresh and funny performances – the ferociously talented youngsters are bolstered by vets like Elaine Hendrix and Beth Grant – a one-of-a-kind visual style and a story that brings humor and hope to outsiders everywhere. - Alonso Duralde, Feature Film Programmer CLOSING NIGHT AFTER-PARTY: Madame Tussauds

A SMALL ACT

FAMILY FUN DAY

Thirty years ago, Holocaust survivor Hilde Back anonymously gave $15 to sponsor the education of an impoverished little boy in Kenya.Today, that boy (Chris Mburu) is a Harvard graduate and human rights lawyer who, upon learning Hilde’s identity, established a scholarship fund in her name for young Kenyans. Now they meet for the first time, allowing filmmaker Jennifer Arnold to examine this ripple effect and show how one small deed can change the world.

We heard that some families in the Outfest community are making short films with their kids (and that the kids are making their own short films). So this year for the very first time, we’re proud to project a series of homemade, selfproduced shorts on the big screen made by YOU! Don’t worry, we’ll still have juice and cookies, interactive games, face painting and a moon bounce. Who knows, this might be the beginning of a new tradition….

OUT OF THE SHADOWS / SIGN OF PROTEST page 16

The groundbreaking documentary OUT OF THE SHADOWS was produced by local affiliate KNBC as an exposé on the (then shocking) lives of gays, lesbians and transgender people living in Los Angeles in 1970 and remains a fascinating and thoroughly entertaining early portrait of queer life in Los Angeles. SIGN OF PROTEST focuses on protests surrounding a homophobic sign that hung for many years in Barney’s Beanery, a West Hollywood landmark, before being removed for the last time in the 1980s.

One of the most daunting tasks for new filmmakers is to gain interest from distributors and broadcasters and then to select the most dynamic and (cross-our-fingers) profitable partnerships. I'm sure we nearly drove the Wolfe pack to the edge of insanity in our eager research, reference requests and endless analysis of numbers and contracts while working together on our first film, MULLIGANS.

PLAN B

Needless to say, after 25 solid years Wolfe continues to be an industry leader in innovation, filmmaker support and new market penetration. Business aside, every interaction with the ladies at Wolfe holds integrity, an openness to new ideas and unwavering support. Wolfe doesn't just take care of films, they help rear filmmakers and careers that serve, educate and entertain our community and the world at large.

UNDERTOW (CONTRACORRIENTE)

The ladies of Wolfe are hard-working, generous and have a genuine love of film. As a business, Wolfe is lean and mean, ready to adapt to the changing faces of technology and hungry for the best of the best in LGBT cinema. I'm a proud member of the Wolfe Pack.

FESTIVAL SERIES

We are thrilled to acknowledge the 25th anniversary of Wolfe Releasing at Outfest 2010. In 1985 Wolfe Video began as a mailorder catalog for documentaries and feature films marketed toward women. Led by founder/CEO Kathy Wolfe and company president Maria Lynn, Wolfe has now become one of the largest and oldest distributors of LGBT films in areas including home video, festival distribution and theatrical releases. Throughout the years, Wolfe has released some of the most beloved queer films, including Lily Tomlin’s THE SEARCH FOR SIGNS OF INTELLIGENT LIFE IN THE UNIVERSE, Nicole Conn’s CLAIRE OF THE MOON, Thomas Bezucha’s BIG EDEN, Rodney Evans’ BROTHER TO BROTHER and Katherine Brooks’ LOVING ANNABELLE.

LEGACY PROJECT ANNIVERSARY SERIES We asked a handful of filmmakers, musicians and journalists to select and introduce a favorite film from the Outfest Legacy Collection.

CLUELESS

Dir/Scr: Amy Heckerling, 1995, USA, 97 min.

True to its title, CLUELESS doesn’t know how gay it is. Amy Heckerling’s 1995 clever reworking of Jane Austen’s Emma gives us Alicia Silverstone as the stylish but shallow Cher Horowitz, whose wellintentioned meddling leads her to deeper revelations about friendship and forbidden love. Along the way, she falls for the gay guy, pursues the jerk, and gives her soul a makeover. CLUELESS is a blast of queerjacent sunshine. - John August

HUSTLER WHITE

From the Legacy Collection Dir/Scr: Bruce LaBruce & Rick Castro, 1996, USA, 79 min.

With his irreverent mix of humor, politics, unapologetic sexuality and a spontaneous, immediate punk aesthetic, Bruce La Bruce has established himself as an influential figure in queer film. HUSTLER WHITE shadows Monti, played by Madonna boy toy Tony Ward, through the subversive streets of Hollywood amid an array of underground dignitaries and porn divas. From bloodsports to full-body duct taping with Ron Athey, HUSTLER WHITE deconstructs pornography and reveals our deepest fears in the way hustlers are used to fulfill our conflicting desires. A wonderful, poignant portrayal of youthful lesbian longing and truly forbidden love, German screen legend Romy Schneider stars as teen orphan Manuela in this gorgeous 1958 remake of the legendary 1931 original. Manuela is the new student at a strict all-girl boarding school where she falls in love with her teacher, Fraeulein von Bernburg. - Jenni Olson Special Thanks to the UCLA Film & Television Archive, Wolfe Releasing and New York Gay Film Festival founder Peter Lowy. OUT OF THE SHADOWS/SIGN OF PROTEST From the Legacy Collection

The groundbreaking documentary OUT OF THE SHADOWS was produced by local affiliate KNBC as an exposé on the (then shocking) lives of gays, lesbians and transgender people living in Los Angeles in 1970. At times cringe-worthy (note the casual use of the word “scum”), OUT OF THE SHADOWS is nevertheless a fascinating and thoroughly entertaining early portrait of queer life in Los Angeles. SIGN OF PROTEST focuses on protests surrounding a homophobic sign that hung for many years in Barney’s Beanery, a West Hollywood landmark.

Dir: Lino Brocka, Scr: Amado Lacuesta, Ricardo Lee, 1988, Philippines, subtitled, 100 min

MACHO DANCER is a provocative film that explores the lives of teenage hustlers struggling to survive in Manila’s steamy red-light district. Based on a true story and directed by internationally acclaimed Lino Brocka, MACHO DANCER depicts a world of bars and brothels, drag queens, crooked cops, porno filmmaking and sexual slavery. Brocka was openly gay and an outspoken leader for social and political justice and the uncle of Q. Allan Brocka. Uncut Director’s Version. Special Thanks to Viva Entertainment and Strand Releasing.

This wildly popular Outfest series showcases some of our biggest films in LA's most epic yet intimate screening venue. GREASE 2

Under The Stars At The Ford

Dir: Patricia Birch, Scr. Ken Finkleman, 1982, 115 min.

Foxy leader of the Pink Ladies, Stephanie (Michelle Pfeiffer) is tired of her T-Bird b.f. (Adrian Zmed). Little does she know that British exchange student Michael (Maxwell Caulfield) might be just the “Cool Rider” she wants. Racier than the original and with a cult following of its own, GREASE 2 is laced with charming ditties like “Reproduction,” “Girl For All Seasons” and “Do It For Our Country.” We can’t say too much, but we wouldn’t dare ask our audience to stay quiet when they see those lyrics onscreen! THE SORROWS OF DOLORES

Dir: Charles Ludlam, Scr: Charles Ludlam & Everett Quinton, 1987, USA, 90 min.

From the Legacy Project Collection Platinum is proud to present the West Coast premiere of THE SORROWS OF DOLORES by the late New York playwright and actor, Charles Ludlam. Ludlam was the visionary behind the notorious Ridiculous Theatrical Company from 1967-1987. From his midnight camp extravaganzas Big Hotel and Turds in Hell to his celebrated gothic horror play The Mysteries of Irma Vep, Ludlam’s densely-layered queer satires embraced the ridiculousness of high culture and the seriousness of the low with drag pastiche and literary verve. THE SORROWS OF DOLORES is one of two 16mm films Ludlam shot in the late 1970s and was left unfinished at the time of his death from AIDS in 1987. Until the recent digital re-mastering and the addition of a new score by original composer Peter Golub, it had not been seen in over 20 years. THE SORROWS OF DOLORES recounts the madcap tale of sweet Dolores who, after being tortured by her sadistic mother, is thrown into the harsh city environs, innocent and alone. Chased by villains, abducted into white slavery, and ravaged by monstrous beasts, Dolores spirals deep into the underworld unable to find redemption. SORROWS is inspired by silent serials, melodramas, and monster films of the early 20th century and stars Ludlam’s longtime lover Everett Quinton in the role of Dolores as well as Ridiculous luminaries such as Black-Eyed Susan, Lola Pashalinski, Minette, and John D. Brockmeyer. In turns comic, horrific, and incredibly tender, it is a treasure from the archive you won’t want to miss. POST-SCREENING RECEPTION: REDCAT Lobby

Brooke Elliot stars as Jane - well she’s actually Deb, but she’s stuck in Jane’s body - and Maragret Cho plays her suspicious and sassy assistant Teri.
