CCCP OVERVIEW
LG BTQ C A R E E R C E N T E R C E R T I F I C AT I O N P R O G R A M H I S TO R Y In 2009, OUT for Work created the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer Career Center Certification Program (LGBTQ CCCP) in response to the need heard from college students and career center professionals regarding the lack of awareness around specific workplace challenges and career specific resources for LGBTQ college students. The program consists of three main pillars; assessment, consultation, and resources. The objective of the program is to evaluate and assist career center professionals in building a greater awareness and toolbox of resources when advising and counseling LGBTQ college students on the transition from academia to the workplace. The LGBTQ CCCP AssessmentTM is an organic document. In 2010, a career center professional committee was formed to assist in modifying the assessment to include more aspects of the responsibilities and roles of career centers on campus. In 2011, OUT for Work and the career center professional committee once again evaluated the assessment and made adjustments to ensure fairness for all those taking the assessment. Since the creation of the program, 317 career centers have certified/ re-certified. The program begins with a staff member of the career center on campus completing the LGBTQ Career Center Certification Program AssessmentTM. If it is the first time the career center is completing the assessment, it is a valuable benchmarking exercise. Further, it allows career center professionals to identify opportunities for improvement in the areas of services, training, outreach, and support. If a career center is taking part in the annual recertification assessment, it is an opportunity to be recognized for the continued advancement and commitment that the career center has to providing LGBTQ specific services, training, outreach, and support.

TM
The LGBTQ CCCP AssessmentTM was created as a way to gauge the current level of outreach, services, resources, and support that career center professionals at higher education institutions provide specifically to the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer student population. The assessment is comprised of 43 possible total scoring questions (primary & conditional). Each question that may be scored is allocated 1 point. To ensure a level playing field, career centers are only scored on the questions in which they have indicated fall within the center’s mandate. For example, if a career center responded that it was not responsible for connecting current students with alumni or other professionals, the points allocated for those questions were not factored into the overall score for that specific career center. 100% receive A+ GOLD certification TOTAL POINTS

This suggests that the awareness, consultation, and resources OUT for Work provides as part of the LGBTQ Career Center Certification Program provides substantial benefits.
R espon d ent P rofile OUT for Work requested additional demographic information in the 2012 assessment. The major reason for this was to gain the ability to identify and report trends among a variety of characteristics. Further, this demographic information could assist career center professionals to compare their results to other similar career centers.

Many factors may account for the considerable number of career centers that completed the assessment in the East and Mid-west. One such factor could be that OUT for Work has hosted national conferences in these regions and has done intense outreach in promoting the conference in these areas. However, it should be noted that OUT for Work has never organized a conference in the South, yet the number of career centers that completed the assessment in the South was higher than those in the West, where the organization has hosted regional events.

O nline C areer C o u nseling With technological advances flourishing, online career counseling is a growing service being offered. Email exchanges, texting, chat rooms, and video conferencing are some of the formats career center professionals are using to reach the LGBTQ student population. Career center representatives are using these methods as conversation starters as well as all-inclusive problem/ solution sessions. However, ethical concerns such as the importance of confidentiality, handling technological glitches, and responding to emergency situations are still present.

Further, those with designated staff members indicated that they felt it was beneficial to have an individual in such a role.

WEBSITE RESOURCES Getting students into the career center is a challenge for many career center professionals. Academic pressures and social commitments are common reasons why students have not visited their campus career center. For LGBTQ students additional reasons may include that they are unfamiliar with the LGBTQ inclusiveness of the career center staff as well as how to discuss LGBTQ specific career concerns. In response, having resources, information, and links on the career center’s website is an important component of the overall services offered.

OUT for Work strongly asserts that LGBTQ college students can face unique challenges transitioning from academia to the workplace that other demographics. One consideration is that there is no national employment non-discrimination law based on sexual orientation or gender identity. In the majority of states, an individual can be denied job opportunities, fired, or otherwise discriminated against for identifying as or suspected of being lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender. Knowledge and awareness of the queer formation model, the LGBTQ career bottleneck hypothesis, and how to better work with LGBTQ college students is important for all career center professionals.
Has the career center staff been trained to assist LGBTQ students with their specific needs and speak to career issues?
