TM

The LGBTQ CCCP AssessmentT M was designed to help gauge outreach, training, services, resources, support, and advocacy that career center professionals at institutions of higher education provide specifically to the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) student population. The assessment is comprised of 33 total scoring questions (primary and conditional). It should be noted that career centers were only scored on the questions in which they indicated fall within their career center’s responsibility. A final score is obtained by taking the total points divided by the total possible points, yielding a percentage. Career centers that receive a perfect score (100%) receive the A+Gold certification, 90-99 percent receive Gold, 80-89 percent receive Silver, and 0-79 percent receive a Bronze level of certification. Further, it should be understood that certification is an annual process. For this cycle, respondents completed the assessment between January and May 2013. Responses reflect activity the 12-month period prior to taking the assessment. 100% receive A+ GOLD certification TOTAL POINTS

90% -99% receive GOLD

TOTAL POSSIBLE POINTS

certification

80%-89% receive Silver certification 0%-79% receive BRONZE certification

One hundred and fifty career centers completed the assessment during this certification cycle. Eightythree percent of the participants represented career centers that had previously certified. This retention rate suggests that career centers understand the mission of the program and see the value in maintaining certification. The high retention rate could have influenced this certification breakdown since most career centers go up in certification level just after one year in the program. Sixty-four percent of recertifying career centers retained the same level of certification or increased in the levels of certification.

2013 RESPONDENT OVERVIEW

CAREER CENTER PROFILE The CCCP prides itself on working with all career services models at institutions of higher learning. That being stated, according to the data, a common career center profile presented itself. The majority of career centers in the CCCP identified as centralized centers at public, 4-year institutions, with 12,000 or more full time students. Students served by these career centers include those at the undergraduate level (100%), graduate level (78%), and doctorate level (46%). Seventy-nine percent served alumni, 22 percent post-doctorate, and 32 percent served those seeking certificate programs. Other clients served include alumni, local community members, and prospective students.

career fair & networking events The overall majority of career center respondents indicated that they were responsible for organizing general career fairs, other recruiting events, and networking opportunities for students.

In the past 12 months, did the career center organize an LGBTQ-specific career fair? YES 5%

In the past 12 months, did the career center organize an LGBTQ-specific networking event? YES 23% While it might not be a reality for a career center to organize a specific career fair for what seems like a smaller campus demographic (the LGBTQ student population), a specialized recruiting event could be more possible.

OUT for Work suggestion Bundle such an event with an on-campus panel discussion with LGBTQ professionals. Further, a recruiting event can be scheduled in coordination with a panel discussion and networking event. A good starting point is contacting the recruiter that the career center works with directly. Often organizations have Employee Resource Groups (ERGs). The recruiter should be able to connect you to the LGBTQ ERG leadership. Organizations are seeking creative ways to reach out to students other than massive annual career fairs. In addition, these ERG members are often looking for opportunities to mentor and connect with students.

AREAS OF FOCUS

C areer C enter & LG BTQ R esource C enter C ollaboration Career centers and LGBTQ resources centers have many things in common. For example, individuals that work in both offices have an innate drive to provide resources and support to the student population. Another commonality often shared by career centers and LGBTQ resource centers is that they operate with too few dollars and not enough staff. Therefore, when the two offices collaborate, the students are more likely to receive a higher level of support. Through collaboration career centers can also gain credibility and additional outreach opportunities.
