Mistake 1: No job objective or a poorly written objective that lacks focus and contains grammar and spelling errors. Fix: State a job objectively and clearly. "Seeking a customer service leadership position." Not "seeking a job where I can use my leadership skills" Plus, make sure every word is correct because errors will just rush your resume to the discard pile. Mistake 2: Your job objective states what you expect to get from your employer. Your resume is your only marketing piece at this stage of the job hunt. Candidates who are contacted by the hiring manager or recruiter have persuasively sold the employer on what they are going to do for them--not the other way around. If you become a serious contender for the position, have career, salary and perk discussions at that stage only Fix: the formula for writing a job objective is: First state the specific job you are seeking. Second, state your top two or three skills that support your job objective. Mistake 3: Each section under your employer's name, your job title and dates is written as a listing of job duties. Fix: Employers want to know what you actually accomplished on the job, not what duties were yours. As much as you possibly can, quantify your acheivements. Remember, it takes alot of focus and multiple feedback sessions about your resume before it takes shape as your true marketing piece. Show it to friends or colleagues and get feedback, then make changes.
