NAVIGATING BENEFITS FOR LGB MILITARY FAMILIES Kristin Ziegler
W
hile we don’t know exactly how many military personnel identify as gay, lesbian, or bisexual, with nearly 40,000 active military personnel in Colorado Springs alone, there are guaranteed to be more than a few out servicemen and women in our great state. These out servicemembers are guaranteed numerous protections for themselves and their families, but as policy has shifted and marriage laws hang in jeopardy, there is often confusion over what is actually accessible. Before the 2011 repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, members of the United States military could not serve openly and, as such, could not apply many of their benefits to the families they made with their same-sex partners. As the ban was lifted, so was a considerable amount of stigma, but the Defense of Marriage Act left many couples in legal limbo. (DOMA severely restricted the benefits the federal government could offer its LGB servicemembers.) Fortunately, DOMA was struck down in 2013, and the federal government acted swiftly in implementing protections for LGB military families. “The Department of Defense remains committed to ensuring that all men and women who serve in the US military, and their families, are treated fairly and equally,” Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said in a memo issued in August 2013. “This will provide accelerated access to the full range of benefits offered to married military
couples throughout the department, and help level the playing field between opposite-sex and samesex couples seeking to be married.” Still, many LGB families faced hurdles in securing benefits and protections for their same-sex partners and family members. Later that year, Texas, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, and West Virginia refused to follow Hagel’s order that LGB families be entitled to the same benefits as their heterosexual peers. The states claimed Hagel’s memo was contrary to their own state laws that banned same-sex unions. Hagel again was quick to reaffirm his commitment to LGB servicemembers. “[Denying same-sex spousal benefits] causes division among the ranks, and it furthers prejudice,” Hagel responded to the states’ actions, adding that they were in direct violation of federal law.
Such hurdles were not faced by those in Colorado, where officials complied with the ruling. As Colorado’s own marriage laws have entered a legal gray zone, it’s important that our lesbian, gay, and bisexual military personnel know what they are entitled to. MEMBER-DESIGNATED BENEFITS Servicemembers may list any one person for these benefits, including a married or unmarried same-sex partner. Member-designated benefits include Service Members Group Life Insurance and Veterans’ Group Life Insurance, retirement annuity under the Survivors Benefit Plan, death gratuity, and the appointment of a caregiver in the event of emergency. STILL SERVING IN SILENCE
Though the US military lifted its 17-year-old Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy in 2011, transgender servicemembers are still prohibited from serving openly — but the ban could soon come to an end. Mike Yost “You suffer from isolation,” says Krista Whipple, president of the Gender Identity Center of Colorado. “You feel you can’t talk to anybody about it. You’re very closed off. It’s not a comfortable way to live for anybody.” Krista joined the Marine Corps in June of 1998 shortly after she graduated high school. Trained as a computer technician, she was stationed at Okinawa, Japan for two years before transferring to the Marine Air Ground Task Force Training Command at Twentynine Palms, California. Though Krista found some support outside of the military at nearby Palm Springs, she was reticent to share her transgender status with others. “I wasn’t really out about my situation while I was in the military,” says Krista, “with the exception of a few close friends who were also in the military at the time.” Even after she left the Marine Corps to work for Lockheed Martin, Krista didn’t escape her seclusion. When a transgender contestant was featured on a nation-wide talent show, she was inundated by her co-workers with discriminatory and ignorant comments regarding the transgender community. “I absolutely felt trapped,” says Krista. “It was excruciating, because on one hand, you really want to stand up and say, ‘You guys are being stupid.’ But on the other hand, it’s about self protection.” According to a Palm Center study released in March of this year, there are 134,350 transgender veterans, and an estimated 8,800 active duty transgender servicemembers with an additional 6,650 in the Guard or Reserve. For those thousands of military members, coming out as transgender — or being discovered — means the end of a military career. In April, The Washington Post featured a story on Landon Wilson, who was booted out of the Navy after it was discovered he was born female. But the very next month, Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel stated in an interview with ABC’s “This Week” that the military should review its ban regarding transgender servicemembers. “Every qualified American who wants to serve our country should have an opportunity if they
fit the qualifications and can do it,” Hagel says. kind of discrimination or violence, it might work, “This is an area that we’ve not defined enough.” but again you’d have to have enough people in the Krista approaches Hagel’s statement with cau- situation who are supportive, who could challenge tious optimism. “I appreciate the anyone who doesn’t support it.” sentiment. Military Families continued from Page 8 EMERGENCY NOTIFICATION Servicemembers have “DD Form 93,” which names family members to be contacted in the event of injury or death during deployment. This form also designates a “Person Authorized to Direct Disposition” for the handling of remains. This person may be a same-sex spouse, so long as the couple is legally married. The military will accept a valid marriage license from any jurisdiction, so Colorado couples legally married elsewhere are entitled to list a spouse as the PADD. FAMILY AND CHILDREN Same-sex spouses and children of same-sex couples are eligible for a military ID card. This card allows access to military bases, including admission into base commissaries. 10
Children of same-sex couples are recognized, be they biological, adopted, fostered, or stepchildren. These children are eligible for medical and dental health insurance, as are married same-sex spouses. If a servicemember with minor children is deployed, he or she must have a Family Care Plan to ensure the minor child is cared for. Military members may list a same-sex partner, even if unmarried, as the caregiver for their child. This partner may not necessarily be eligible for other benefits, including an ID card, but might receive a letter of authorization allowing him or her to buy goods for the child at a military commissary.

IN THE NAVY: A LOOK BACK AT RETRO GAY MILITARY MOVIES Kristin Ziegler WITH MOST OF THE WESTERN WORLD LIFTING BANS and embracing lesbian and gay service members, we can expect military narratives to become something of a staple at LGBTQ film festivals in the years to come. But for nearly as long as there have been motion pictures, men and women in uniform have always been a part of gay film iconography. From the good to the bad to the Tom Cruise, check out these retro armed forces flicks. WINGS William A. Wellman, 1927 When Jack Powell and David Armstrong are billeted together after enlisting as combat pilots in World War I, the two hometown rivals can hardly stand the sight of one another. After all, they had already been at war with each other back home, battling for the affections of the same girl. But as the reality of war begins to kick in, the two men seem to have fixed their sights on each other. Although the relationship between Powell and Armstrong is portrayed as heterosexual — with legendary silent actress Clara Bow serving as a love interest who comes between them — the homoerotic subtext is undeniable. “Wings” went on to win the very first Academy Award for Best Picture, solidifying its significance with mainstream and queer film critics alike. FIREWORKS Kenneth Anger, 1947 Infamous director Kenneth Anger famously remarked that his experimental 14-minute film “Fireworks” was “all I have to say about being seventeen, the United States Navy, American Christmas, and the Fourth of July.” “Fireworks” tells the story of a dreamer who goes on a surreal journey, one of seamen and BDSM, to get some satisfaction. Its explicit depictions of desire did not sneak by the censors unnoticed: A 1958 obscenity lawsuit regarding the film made it to the California Supreme Court, where the film was ultimately determined to be of artistic merit. Hooyah! REFLECTIONS IN A GOLDEN EYE John Huston, 1967 “Reflections in a Golden Eye” stars the iconic Elizabeth Taylor and the bisexual screen legend Marlon Brando as a doomed husband and wife duo, torn apart by affairs and Brando’s character’s desire to be with a man. The supporting cast lead equally dramatic lives, as the film explores loss, self-harm, and stalking. To say the critics abhorred this 1967 melodrama would be a gross understatement, but its unsympathetic portrayal of homosexuality, coupled with the casting of Brando (who came out as bisexual in the 1970s) leaves this film a fascinating relic for LGBTQ film fans. TOP GUN Tony Scott, 1986 Now, now. We’re not insinuating anything about Tom Cruise (we’d get sued), but “Top Gun” is the stuff “accidental” gay classics are made of. The 1986 film, which received quite the mixed bag of reviews, has a title suitable for porn, a then-closeted Kelly McGillis as a smoking-hot flight instructor, a bleached blonde and tanned Val Kilmer, a bromance, that song by Berlin, and, of course, Tom Cruise (again, not implying a thing). The film is about two Navy members given the chance to train at the Navy’s Fighter Weapons School. It’s a lot of mainstream military-movie/been-there-seen-that, but it’s got enough cheese to keep its viewers sated. A bingo version of “Top Gun” had spirits at Cinema Q and Red Rocks sky-high this summer, so keep your eyes peeled for future rounds at the Denver Film Society. 12

A COUCHSURFING SEDUCTION

turned out that even after our platonically naked hang out, his sights weren’t so set on me. Rather the man he really wanted was Luke, which ironically turned me on even more. Thus Luke and I had to band together to resist all temptation. But the more we resisted, the more aggressive Tyler got. For the remainder of their trip, he made seduction his couchsurfing mission. Tyler would text us late at night asking if he could come join us in our bed. He would snap naked selfies in our guest bathroom and send them to Luke daily. Meanwhile his boyfriend, Bryan, remained clueless that any of this was happening. By the end of their trip, we were glad to see them go. Luke and I didn’t want to be caught in the crossfire of whatever relationship disjuncture these guys were experiencing. And we were proud of the fact that we properly maintained sexual integrity in the face of some tempting bad behavior. Nonetheless I found it fascinating that the guy who seemed most appalled by our open status was quicker to break his own monogamous beliefs. And all I could think of was that Shakespeare quote: “The lady doth protest too much.” Scott McGlothlen is a cultural columnist on life as a HIV-positive gay man. THROUGHOUT COLLEGE, I lived on a tight budget and therefore utilized the concept of “couchsurfing” whenever I traveled. Years later, I convinced my partner Luke to give it a try with me in order to save money on a trip to NYC. It worked brilliantly and we decided that in order to properly participate, we should also open our own home to travelers from the couchsurfing website. Most of our travelers were gay men who were happy to get a real bed and bathroom to themselves. In January of 2014, we hosted a young gay couple named Bryan and Tyler. Bryan was about 27, made money as a professional poker player, and had a sexy “pre-bear” kind of look. Tyler was only 22 and aspired to be the first successful, openly gay rap artist. His many tattoos helped counteract the twink-factor of his lean hairlessness. Upon settling into our home, Bryan noticed a book on our shelves on learning how to create and sustain open relationships. He brought it up as the four of us hung out. Luke and I talked openly about our difficult journey to figuring out an open relationship but how it served us incredibly well. “I think that is something I would like to try one day,” Bryan said. “Umm, not me,” Tyler interjected. “I would never have an open relationship. If you love someone, that should be enough!” Tyler continued to rant on why open relationships were awful while I internally I rolled my eyes. By the third night of their stay, we noticed an
odd pattern. Once bedtime hit and Bryan passed out, Tyler would come hang out with us… wearing nothing but his boxers. In fact, he kept adjusting his boxers to sit even lower on his hips. With Luke needing to go to bed early too, Tyler and I hung out one-on-one and his near nakedness had me fully hooked and intrigued. Since we had an earlier conversation about a couple of us experimenting with nudism, I suggested that we strip down and hang out in our birthday suits. This way I could enjoy the views without the touch. Tyler seemed more than excited by this idea. So at one o’clock in the morning, there we sat: totally naked and drinking tea while Tyler laid down some of his hardcore raps for me. Out of all the obscure naked things I have done, this was probably the strangest. But he actually was quite a talented rapper. “The difference between me and other rappers,” Tyler said, “is that I sing about stuff that really happened to me. Like … I really was addicted to painkillers once.” To me, that didn’t sound like an authentic thug life, but who was I to judge? After a while, I called it a night, but while getting ready for bed, Tyler sent a text. He apologized for being such a tease. “I would just like to do something with the both of you is all,” he wrote. I tried brushing it off as no big deal. And it

SAGEWORKS OFFERS OLDER LGBT JOB SEEKERS SUPPORT Rex Fuller These days it can be challenging for anyone who’s looking for work, but older workers face extra challenges that some younger job seekers may not face — and members of the LGBT community may face even greater difficulty. Hiring managers often assume an older applicant isn’t up-to-date on the latest technology. An older applicant might be passed over for a job because he or she is viewed as overqualified. Openly gay or lesbian candidates may face discrimination on the job or may feel the need to closet themselves in order to find adequate employment. According to a recent study by the National Center for Transgender Equality, transgender people experience unemployment at twice the rate of the general population. More than four in ten transgender people who are currently working are underemployed compared to their level of education and experience. Transgender workers are also nearly four times more likely than the population as a whole to have an annual household income of under $10,000. SAGE of the Rockies at the GLBT Community Center seeks to address these problems through SAGEWorks, a national job-readiness program sponsored by The Walmart Foundation. Designed for LGBT job seekers over 40, SAGEWorks offers community members the chance to explore new career opportunities, build job-seeking skills, review resumes, and practice job interviewing. “It really is for people who are unemployed or underemployed,” says Reynaldo Mireles, program manager for SAGE. “We are also trying to help people who have a wide skill set, but are finding it difficult to find a job or change careers.” SAGE (Services and Advocacy for GLBT Elders) is a national organization with affiliates across the US. IT’S BEEN A HECK OF A SUMMER — FULL OF TRIUMPHS AND TRAGEDIES — and I created them all. I have been challenged by not honoring who I am. I can say that a great deal of my challenge has been overextending myself. I run in so many directions. I see the opportunity to participate or contribute and I am ready to do it today. When I do this, my schedule and the people on it all pay the price. I overbook, double book, over-promise, and overtax my brain. From here forward, I am saying, enough. I give. “Uncle.” I vow to find a way to put order to my chaos, without diminishing my creativity. I realized that’s been the crux of my issue up to this point. Order equals boring, chaos equals creativity — at least that’s what I thought. I have felt the frenetic need to continually create something new, something different, continually striving to be the most amazing me. There is a great deal of expectation involved with being amazing all of the time. Periodically, the rocket runs out of fuel, or a bulb goes out on your spotlight at the worst time possible. (Then again, when is it ever a good time to run out of gas?) Every creative person you see portrayed on film is usually in chaos; people running around screaming, firing people, generally creating havoc. Then when you see the true masters, they’re always surrounded by serenity. When you watch Annie Leibovitz on set, it’s peaceful, harmonious, relaxed. This is why she got to photograph The Queen. I experienced that same serenity backstage with fashion greats Bill Blass, Oscar de la Renta, and Ralph Rucci. Instead of a whirling dervish of creativity, they were all serene, calm, and sure. In fact, they were considerably more exacting when they slowed down. When people would marvel at my stamina, I never understood what they were talking about. I’m used to being continually in motion. Then it happened: I slowed down and all of the stuff in motion behind me came crashing down on my head. The pace I was striving to keep was artificial at best and catastrophic at worst. I needed to slow down and take a knee. Then a quiet voice in the back said, “What’s your hurry? You are who you say you are. If you need to take time for yourself, that’s okay.” In case you couldn’t guess, the voice is my wusband. Just kidding. Though she did say something similar a couple of times, she was really only repeating the voice inside me all along. Once I actually slowed down to experience other parts of my life, it was a challenge getting back to the things I had to do. It was my time away from the schedule of perpetual motion that made me realize I was a slave to it. The funny thing is, I’m the one who created it and I’m the only one who can change it. If I am to become a master at being me, I must learn to master saying no to me. I must be honest with myself about how much work I really want to put into a project. I must only promise what I know I can deliver. I must pay attention to the warning signs that I’m asking too much of myself, of my marriage, of my schedule. I will be calmer, more serene. Just call me the Socialite Master. Robyn Vie-Carpenter is a social columnist on the local and national LGBT community. Domestic Violence: Not Always What You Think Domestic violence arrests are common in Colorado, but it may surprise you to know that “domestic violence” is not a crime itself, but is rather a sentence enhancer that may be added to any crime when the victim and the defendant are, or have been, in an intimate relationship. Also, the underlying crime must have been committed for purposes of coercion, control, punishment, intimidation, or revenge to qualify for the “domestic violence” enhancer. Also, while many people may believe that domestic violence charges only apply to crimes committed by men, they are actually gender neutral. Thus, the enhancement may be applied regardless of the sex of the defendant or the victim, and includes same-sex couples. It does not take visible injuries, multiple witnesses, or any physical evidence whatsoever for a domestic violence charge to be brought. In fact, despite the name, the act itself does not even have to be violent. Telephone calls, texts, and purely
verbal arguments can result in an arrest for domestic violence if the words threaten violence or merely imply that bodily injury could occur. Choose your words carefully! A domestic violence conviction brings serious consequences. It can result in long-term domestic violence treatment, termination of the right to possess a firearm, and possibly jail time. A mandatory restraining order is usually put in place that may forcibly restrain you from your home, prevent you from using any drugs or alcohol, and bar you from having any contact whatsoever with the alleged victim — even if the victim initiates contact. If you are arrested for a crime involving domestic violence, it’s critical that you hire an experienced domestic violence attorney immediately to protect your rights. The ramifications of a conviction are simply too severe to try to do it alone. Call Bloch & Chapleau today at 303-331-1700 to speak to our aggressive domestic violence defense attorney Todd Narum, or visit us online at DenverDomesticViolenceAttorney.com.

Guerra Denver’s own Mondo Guerra — Colorado’s darling of “Project Runway,” you’ll recall — showed his sass in a collection made specifically for Urban Peak, a local non-profit that assists young people in their struggle to overcome the hardship of poverty. The charitable conduit of couture also gave Out Front a moment to fashion a few questions about what he’s been up to. Concerning the Urban Peak collection [pictured]: [It’s] inspired by moving forward and by growth, and I really focused on application — exploring print techniques, applique, and hand embellishments. I [used] the silhouettes as a canvas. Is the line available to the public, or is it just catwalk? [This is] an artistic release, so the collection for the Urban Nights Runway is pure exhibition, but you will definitely see similar silhouettes from the show in my S/S 2015 collection. How has Denver changed in the last few years and where do you see it going? I feel Colorado-based designers are continually working together to make progress in fashion. Apart from the collaboration with Urban Peak, what have you been up to lately? I’ve been very active in HIV/AIDS advocacy. I’m a spokesperson for Merck’s “I Design” campaign, which underscores the importance of people living with HIV/AIDS to work with their physicians on important treatment goals. I’m also a part of Subaru’s Dining Out for Life, which is an annual fundraising event where restaurants across North America donate a portion of their sales from one special night of dining to their local AIDS service organization. Adatto There isn’t an Adatto store — a consultant and suit stylist comes to you. You choose the fit and fabrics you’re after, and once your precise measurements are taken, the suit scientists of Adatto work their magic back at the lab and ship your suit within four to six weeks. Build a custom suit from more than 175 suit or blazer fabrics, an eye-popping range of colors, patterns, and weights, and more than 125 shirt fabrics to start. Then get devilish in your details with thread colors to accent your button holes, six different styles of cuffs for your shirts, nine collar options, and a marvel of materials and cuts for accenting with suit with piping and lining. Suitsupply Behold the wonder of a suit store with inventory that rivaled Armani in blind studies, but dazzled the European market with modest pricing — and its first American store is right here in Denver. Every sales associate at Suitsupply was flown to NYC for extensive training on everything from custom fitting to fabric matching. In fact, within seconds of crossing the threshold into their exquisite boutique, the associates can eyeball your size from top to bottom and get you started on a literal one-of-a-kind suit. Unparalleled selections of accessories (see their towering wall of neckties and elegant selection of pocket squares) combined with a fresh take on the basics (their serpentine rack of blazers and jackets ranges from ‘casual summer’ to ‘night at the opera’) make for an experience in quality, value, and true attention to detail that’ll stick with you for as long as you can fit the suit. THE ANTIBES COLLECTION Sea, sun, and the glamorous world of the French Riviera in downtown Denver? As you wish. Designer Laura Figueras channels antics in Antibes, a French resort town known for being playground for the rich and famous, counting among its ranks of frolickers Coco Chanel, Audrey Hepburn, James Dean, and Picasso. Calling upon the Breton stripe and clean lines of the 20s and 30s, the collection provides subtle glam for the modern woman, inspired by the sights and sounds of the south of France. “No one calls you a crossdresser if you’re a woman in men’s clothing,” Ann, a right fashionable friend of mine observes over lunch. (She’s a transwoman who’s been through the fashion wringer.) “You’re either a tomboy, a lesbian, or both. But if you’re a man in women’s clothing in our patriarchal society,” her eyes roll with sarcasm, “there’s obviously something wrong with you.” Jo, a polished transman, agrees. “[That] actually makes it harder to pass [as male] because the intent is not as clear.” Too look at him — even with down-to-the-thread scrutiny — you’d have a hard time believing anyone ever doubted his authenticity. That’s exactly what paying close attention to presentation will do. “It’s all smoke and mirrors,” Ann says. “Fashion is an illusion.” So I’ll just let them rain down some knowledge on points to ponder for newly transitioning individuals entering the fascinating fields of fashion. Draw the eye away from your trouble areas. For transmen, prominent hips can mess with the look. A nice-fitting overcoat (think blazers and jean jackets) helps straighten the lines of your frame. Go for dark, solid colors in your button-ups and splurge on a good, breathable binder if you’re well-endowed up top. For height, Jo recommends Doc Martens boots. “They add about an inch to your height,” he says. In transwomen, troublespots are commonly feet and/or hands, so wear boot-cut jeans or any type that flares a bit. Skinny jeans + large feet = the illusion of bigger feet. Also, there’s a huge market for feminine footwear in flats. Big hands? Avoid jewelry that calls attention to them.

Be discerning. Sometimes foxy, excited new transwomen go overboard right from the jump. There’s often a “making up for lost time” that includes “tween” and “lady of the night” attire: patent leather skirts, five-inch heels, plunging necklines that put a push-up bra’s prizes front and center, animal print, bright red lips, and a visible thong. (You see where this is going.) If that’s your thing, honey, you do you. For others who aren’t into wolf-whistles and intensely sexualized spotlights, Ann recommends checking out Gap, Banana Republic, or Ann Taylor catalogues for a modern ensemble that blends you into Denver’s sexy, career-woman landscape. Hair’s the thing … For many new transmen, facial hair isn’t an option. “There’s not a good way to fake facial hair honestly,” Jo says. “It all mostly looks fake.” How you can get your hair-swerve on? “Go to a real barber and get a stylish cut by someone who is a pro with mens’ cuts,” he tells us. “That helps.” “We owe a debt of gratitude toward drag queens,” Ann says. “They’ve taught us a lot.” For example? “For example, how to hide the 5-o’clock shadow.” She says that in reality, the darkness of soon-to-sprout facial hair translates as green to the eye when it’s still beneath the skin. “Using red lipstick as a base neutralizes the green — then you put your foundation over that and you’re back in business.” Genius! But no matter what style you choose, rock the hell out of it, brothers and sisters, for who better to create an illusion than your own inner magician?

I AM STRANGELY PROTECTIVE OF MY EYEBROWS. Like, “MamaBear looking over her cub” kind of protective. Criticize my clothes or my hair, fine, but say one bad word about my brows and things get real. So it’s a given I would be skeptical of any kind of grooming program that would dare to tinker with the “archways to the soul” (seriously, I’ve heard them called that before). Waxing seemed way too messy, and the thought of giving someone free reign of the tweezers sent me into waves of control-freak hysteria. But eventually my own grooming didn’t cut it. I needed an expert to tame my brows, but it couldn’t be with the traditional tools of hot wax or tweezers. My friend suggested threading, the practice of using a thin piece of cotton thread to form a loop that catches a hair and removes it. I was admittedly a little weirded-out when I first witnessed this practice (where did all Threading causes relatively the plucked hair go?), but decided no redness, as it doesn’t tug that I could first experiment with at the skin like waxing. It’s a the rowdy hairs between my brows good alternative those with — the arch would come later. sensitive skin. My first experience first felt like a quick stinging, but I eventually got used to the strange sensation. The technician explained that she was pulling an individual hair with each pass, which would give her more control of the definition and shape of the brow. While I never had my eyebrows waxed, I can imagine it was less painful. Some other interesting things I learned from my first threading expedition: • Some say that threading lasts longer than tweezing. Depending on the shade of your hair, users can go up to a month between sessions. • Threading causes relatively no redness, as it doesn’t tug at the skin like waxing. It’s a good alternative for those with sensitive skin. • The technique usually helps those prone to ingrown hairs avoid that nasty problem. • Threading originated in India and is widely practiced in the Middle East.

With a little research, I learned that threading (like most beauty treatments) can also have unwanted negative results. Some technicians can rush the process, which can lead to sloppy work. If you’re as protective of your brows as I am, I recommend asking around for the best threading service in your area. Though many don’t require appointments, scheduling one ahead of time can help you avoid those pesky waits if the salon is busy.

ASK THE SEXPERT
THE GREAT OUTDOORS Dear Shanna, Here in Colorado, it seems like all the queer folk are really into the outdoors — camping, hiking, hot springs, etc. Do you have any tips for getting it on in the most satisfying way possible while enjoying The Great Outdoors?

The Denver Gay and Lesbian Flag Football League held their Jersey Party for the 2014 fall season at the X Bar on August 16. Players gathered to meet their teammates, pick up their jerseys, take photos, and present themselves to the rest of the league. The event also featured drink specials and free food provided by the DGLFFL and supporting sponsors. The new season kicked off on Sunday, August 17 in Cranmer Park. Photos by Charles Broshous

Unsure About Mother Nature, Golden. Dear Unsure About Mother Nature, I’m with you. I’m not really an outdoorsy person myself — to me, communing with nature is dependent on a visit to the Denver Botanic Gardens, or based upon what unsuspecting bug has deigned to enter our home. That being said, I recently decided to challenge myself and agree to present at an outdoor camping-and-kink event held in the wilds of Washington State. Here are some things I have learned — I hope they help you as well. • Flavored lube smells and tastes good to people. It also may have the same effect on wildlife or, more specifically, bugs. Consider sticking with water- or silicone-based lube and save the sweet stuff for the confines of home. • If you’ll be bonking in the sunshine for any period of time, make sure to apply sunblock to any exposed bits. Sun burned nose? That sucks. Sun burned junk? Worst idea EVER. Apply regularly … make it a fun foreplay game if needed, just make sure you’ve got everything covered. • Stay hydrated. As most Coloradans know, staying hydrated is crucial any time of year in the great Rocky Mountains. As most f*cking folk know, staying hydrated is the name of the good sex game. Put these two items together, and you definitely need to ensure that your water intake is above and beyond what you regularly drink. Dehydration from camping sex is probably not a story you want to share with all your buddies. • Use some of the wide world of nature. Are you kinky and like a little pain? Thistles or stinging nettles can be fun for flogging and spanking. Like to tie someone up or try new and exciting positions? Use interestingly shaped trees and rocks to mix up your sexual repertoire. Just stay away from poisonous snakes, poison ivy, and anything else that might seriously cause harm. • Tent sex can be naughty-feeling and fantastic, but a wet spot in a sleeping bag is even more of an annoyance than when it is on your bed. Bring an extra towel, sheets, or Fascinator Throe (ofcnow.co/throe) to absorb an additional moisture, so you’re not stuck in a sexed up, super-sweaty sleeping bag come nightfall. Best of luck with your camping adventures and, of course, make sure to leave only footprints — take any safer sex supplies, toys, etc. back with you when you’re done connecting with the wilderness. SUFFERING IN SILENCE Brent Heinze | Heinzesight MANY OF US HAVE A HARD TIME ASKING FOR HELP. This could be from growing up with a support system that wanted us to handle our own stuff or was absent in our lives when we needed comfort. This potentially made us feel they really didn’t want to hear about things that were stressing us out. Often, it can be perceived as a positive skill to learn to be self-sufficient and handle a variety of things happening to us, but in our adulthood, asking for advice or talking through problems may now feel highly uncomfortable and many rarely admit when they are struggling. We all benefit from support sometimes and don’t have to do everything alone, but it’s also not easy to change these old patterns and insecurities. A very good friend of mine told me one of the greatest gifts you could give someone is the ability to ask for advice or support. It shows a level of admiration you have for this person since you care enough about his or her sight, experiences, and friendship. It shows a level of trust between the two of you, especially when you aren’t known for sharing those types of things. This can also strengthen a relationship between people getting past difficult situations and building good connections together. Unfortunately, admitting that we desire assistance, support, or a shoulder to cry on brings up a variety of feelings. These include distrust, self-loathing, insecurity, feeling like a whiny bitch, or not wanting to be seen as a weak person. It also causes us to experience feelings of anger
