Today, there are men in our community who lived through the AIDS crisis. You may not recognize them or interact with them, but they suffered to push the community forward to where it is today. Those who did not succumb to disease outright suffered through bouts of trial medications that taxed them body and mind. Their sacrifice permitted us to escape their experience but they still bear the marks.

N EWS

HIV AND THE FINISH LINE AS THE ANGEL GABRIEL IN 2005’s Constantine, Tilda

Swinton explains that “only in the face of horror do we find our nobler selves.” The crucible of suffering and tragedy tends to galvanize communities and drive collective action. In America, it seems like nothing brings us together as a community quite like a tragedy.

Pieter Tolsma The LGBT community is no stranger to overcoming tragedy and adversity. Just recently, we came together to push for marriage. In the 80s and early 90s, however, it was the HIV crisis. HIV forced our community to take a hard look at itself and we banded together to demand change. The community embraced — or at least acknowledged — its relationship with HIV and stood up for those who suffered. We fought for research and treatment funding and circled the wagons to care for those who needed us. HIV still exists and thrives in the gay community. Now more than ever, we seem to have the option of masking our community with raucous personalities and energetic fun. We now have PrEP and antiretrovirals, but the disease still winds and twists its way through our vibrant culture. There’s still a continuing 6   O CTOBER 21, 201 5

need for us to bind together. We still carry the experience and history with us in the form of those who lived through it and those who are struggling to. Acknowledging our own mortality is not easy and often not something we want to do long term. In the film An Englishman in New York, John Hurt’s character wonders why gay men are obsessed with the gym and physical fitness. He is told that the community will not tolerate the reminder that it’s dying and throws itself behind fostering an illusion of health to mask its impending mortality. This is a stinging assessment of the community as we push past the idea that physical fitness might be an attempt to reclaim our health. Instead, it accuses the gay community of deception and sidestepping.

Many of these men carry the mental scars of those medications and have to live on disability, unable to truly assert their presence because of their physical, mental, and financial limitations. Others paid a higher price, having died in this fight. We have lost thousands upon thousands of voices, unceremoniously silenced, leaving but a void to witness them. Perhaps the most potent force keeping these men from being a vibrant part of our community is the community itself. We have moved on from HIV. HIV is a nuisance and a frustration, now. We medicate it and set it aside. When someone contracts it, it is often taboo to share. All of this adds to the invisibility of those who are suffering, especially when their need is so great, and especially for those nearly invisible groups that are entirely dependent on their community for care. Recently, there was a flap in the news about a man who raised the cost of a basic HIV medication to an exorbitant level. This particular situation was handled, but the alarm should still be raised so we, as a community, can take care to defend this population against wolves like Martin Shkreli. This also means reaching out and engaging this group again and seeing them as the pioneers within our proud history that they truly are. We are making progress toward a world free of HIV. Science presses forward and we celebrate each step as we eagerly await the day of a proper vaccine and treatment. While we’re constantly looking forward, we need to make sure we look back and make sure everyone is still with us. We may need to carry a few, but we must get to that finish line together.

ALABAMA WALMART STOCKS GUN COUNTER WITH “GUN OIL” LUBE An Alabama man shopping in the gun section at Walmart came across a little more than he bargained for. With no one around to help Jamie Lee Bracey, he decided to have a look around when he noticed Gun Oil H20, a personal lubricant that is known well by its targeted audience — the gay community. He was intrigued by the water-based aspect because, “That could rust, right?” Upon further inspection, he realized it wasn’t lube for a firearm, but rather a different type of rifle. Let’s see here. Long-lasting lubrication with easy cleanup. Glycerin and

paraben free. Wetter, lighter feel than silicone. Oh, that sounds good. That sounds really good. Then, the addition of “ginseng and guarana to promote blood flow” really threw him off. Under the guise of an actual gun oil, that’s frightening, but we all know that increased blood flow is a good thing in our lubricant! Luckily, Jamie figured it out when he read the instructions: For topical use, apply desired amount to genital areas. Boom! We would have stocked up — Walmart always rolls back those prices!

CHRIS BURNS BECOMES FIRST OPENLY GAY D-1 MEN’S BASKETBALL COACH Chris Burns, the assistant men’s basketball coach at Bryant University, is the nation’s first Division 1 coach to come out as gay when he published a personal essay on OutSports.com. In the essay, Burns talks openly about hiding his sexuality in high school and college during his playing career, and how he focused on being a “good hoops player” to keep the attention away from his sexuality. But as he got older, lying about his sexuality opened doors for him to lie about other aspects of his life, and how those behaviors became “toxic.” Before his time at Bryant, Burns spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Rhode Island College, a D-III school. 8   O CTOBER 21, 201 5

ANGRY STUDENTS TAKE ON WESTBORO BAPTIST CHURCH Teenagers are scary. Teenagers are brave. Teenagers are ruthless. We know this, because not long ago, we were them. We were discovering ourselves as we made some of the most important decisions in our lives. So, when people threaten what they think is right, they don’t hold back. That’s exactly what a group of teenagers from Kansas City, MO did when members of the Westboro Baptist Church showed up on their high-school campus to protest the recent election of a trans girl as homecoming queen. They fought back, in numbers. Members of the church fled from Oak Park High School when they realized the number of angry students approaching greatly outnumbered them. Chanting “Love Live the Queen” and displaying signs reading “Westboro Baptist Church Needs Jesus”, the large group ambushed the members of the church, making them flee to their “nice Honda.” As they drove away, the students cheered. Bravo, kids. Bravo. Check out the video at OutFrontOnline.com

2015–2016 will be Burns’ third season as an assistant coach of the Bulldogs. Since coming out, he talks about the openness of people, and how welcoming they were, saying that his “fears are far worse than reality.” He concluded his essay with words of encouragement for others in the same position: “But always know this: When the time comes to share your true self, you will feel so much love and relief and hope and freedom.” Burns also sat down with USA Today to talk about his decision to come out. Check out the video at OutFrontOnline.com

WEBSITE KEEPS A LIST OF SEXUAL PARTNERS AND PRODUCES “FUN” STATS Forget the little black book. Forget your diary of dirty, dirty experiences. Forget trying to remember every trick that’s come and gone. A website has emerged that will keep a record of all your sexual interactions. Sexlist.me is offering everyone a comprehensive, private record of your sexual history, including name, age, race, nationality, time of sexual act, whether protection was used, and your rating for the hookup. The only thing it doesn’t ask for is a picture, which could be helpful if your list drags on. According to the website, “Millennials are delaying marriage more, which means they’re sleeping with more people before they settle down — so more are choosing to keep lists since it’s harder to keep track otherwise.” This is genius. After signing up and entering a few proud (or not-so-proud) experiences, the site then takes the information and displays your statistics on a visual timeline, showing some of the thirstiest phases of your life. If anything, the site is good for a trip down Memory Lane. Dig deep in those skulls and try and pull out every good and bad decision made in the bedroom, or bathroom, or parking lot, or balcony of your distant cousin’s timeshare in Florida. Embrace your sexual history, and see it in a whole new light with Sexlist.me.

COLLEGE MATTERS FOR DENVER: VOTE YES ON 2A ONE OF THE GREAT CHALLENGES for the LGBT community is showing and teaching others that we are part of the fabric of Denver. We are neighbors, co-workers, and business owners, classroom parents, teachers, and police officers. State Sen. Lucía Guzmán Our community is also a big part of Denver’s economy. More than ever, participating in Denver’s promising 21st century economy requires some level of postsecondary education. That’s why voting ‘yes’ on Referendum 2A — the College Matters proposal — is so important. The cost of attending college in Colorado has increased dramatically in just past five years. As a result, thousands of Denver kids who have the grades, the smarts, and the determination to earn a degree don’t have a fair shot at attending college. A ‘yes’ vote on 2A will give these kids that fair shot by supporting scholarships and student loan debt relief, funded through a sales tax of less than one penny on ten dollars. The program is also focused on helping students succeed with academic and financial aid counseling to ensure they stay on track and graduate. It’s a pay-forperformance approach that rewards student success and bends the cost curve in favor of our students. This investment is aligned with strategies used to attract jobs and create economic opportunity every day. Denver

invests in job recruitment and retention programs, capital improvements, neighborhood amenities, and a wide range of workforce development and training programs. And we all know that people with postsecondary educations have much greater job opportunities, earn higher wages, contribute more in taxes that support critical public services, and have much less dependence on costly programs like welfare, unemployment, and housing assistance. Creating pathways to a certificate or degree from a technical school, community college, or four-year college is a huge advantage for Denver’s middle- and low-income residents — our LGBT youth, included. Referendum 2A is an investment in Denver’s future, building on major investments we’ve made in our youth and their potential by providing access to the tools they need to succeed. Getting a fair shot at opportunity is at the heart of Referendum 2A because a postsecondary education changes lives and supports our economy. That’s why we urge you to vote yes on 2A.

SAME-SEX COUPLE TAKES THE CAKE On August 13, the Colorado Court of Appeals announced its long-awaited decision in Craig v. Masterpiece Cakeshop, ruling that a Colorado bakery could not cite religious beliefs as the reason to refuse to bake a wedding cake for a same-sex couple. Back in 2012, Charlie Craig and David Mullens were planning their marriage in Massachusetts, and a celebration with family and friends in Colorado. They asked Jack Phillips, owner of Masterpiece Cakeshop, to bake them a wedding case. However, their seemingly simple request was rejected by Mr. Phillips, who refused to bake a wedding cake for a same-sex couple due to his religious convictions. Mr. Craig and Mr. Mullens filed a complaint with the Colorado Civil Rights Divisions, and an Administrative Judge for the commissions agreed with them that Masterpiece Cakeshop had improperly discriminated against them. Masterpiece then took the case to the Colorado Court of Appeals. In ruling in favor of Mr. Craig and Mr. Mullens, the Colorado Court of Appeals relied on the seminal US Supreme Court case of Obergefell v. Hodges, which granted same-sex couples the right just a few months earlier. Quoting the

Obergefell case, the Colorado Court of Appeals held that “The nature of marriage is that, through its enduring bond, two persons together can find other freedoms, such as expression, intimacy and spirituality. This is true for all persons, whatever their sexual orientation.” It therefore appears that the Obergefell decision created a clear path for the Colorado Court of Appeals to prohibit the discrimination of a same-sex couple. The Colorado Court of Appeals further shot down Mr. Phillips’ argument that his rights to exercise free speech and religion allowed him to discriminate against a same-sex couple. The Court determined that “the act of designing and selling a wedding cake to all customers free of discrimination does not convey a message about same sex weddings likely to be understood by those that view it.” The summer of 2015 will long be remembered for the landmark legal victories that same-sex couples achieved, both nationally and here in Colorado. at area locations. The fest features several LGBT shorts, documentaries, and features. Here’s a rundown of the some of the highlights from this year’s program. Gary M. Kramer One of the festival’s Red Carpet Premieres is Todd Haynes’ stunning romantic drama Carol, adapted from Patricia Highsmith’s classic lesbian novel “The Price of Salt.” This stylish and piercing character study is both a heart-rending drama and a striking romance about two women. Therese (Rooney Mara), a young shopgirl, and Carol (Cate Blanchett), a married woman, are coming to terms with their sexual identities in the conformist era of the 1950s. Superbly acted by Blanchett and Rooney, and featuring gorgeous period costumes and design, Carol shows how each woman works toward securing professional, familial, and sexual happiness, and the cost true love entails. It’s magnificent. Out filmmaker Ron Nyswaner directs the fine documentary She’s the Best Thing In It, about Mary Louise Wilson, a Tonyaward-winning actress (for Grey Gardens) teaching an acting class in New Orleans. Teaching is a new role for the 44-year veteran of the stage, screen, and TV, and she worries about communicating to her young students as she gives them acting exercises. Nyswaner’s film shows the secrets of being a good character actor through clips of Wilson on stage and screen and from interviews with other performers, including Tyne Daly and Frances McDormand. Wilson’s candor in discussing her personal loneliness, alcoholism, and estranged relationship with her gay older brother provides as much insight as her master class on performing. An Act of Love uses the standard documentary elements — talking heads, news footage, and recreations — to recount 1 2  O CTOBER 21, 201 5

the heartfelt and impassioned story of Rev. Frank Schaefer, a United Methodist Church Pastor in Lebanon, PA, who was defrocked six years after officiating at his son Tim’s samesex wedding ceremony. The film’s politics are squarely on the LGBTQ/equality side, even as it gives voice to those who condemn Rev. Schaefer for breaking the covenant of the Book of Discipline. This articulate film, written and directed by Scott Sheppard, provides an inspiring portrait of a man who unexpectedly became an activist, and his many supporters. Call Me Marianna is a sensitive Polish film about Marianna Klapczynski and her transition from male to female. She says she is “disgusted by her own body,” and meets with various lawyers and doctors who legally, psychologically, and physically prepare her for the irreversible surgery. While her relationship with her parents and family is strained, she has supportive friends, and even a boyfriend. Director Karolina Bielawska intercuts the documentary scenes with a stage reading of a play to contextualize Marianna’s experiences provide insight into Marianna’s mental, physical, and emotional journey. Also from Poland is writer/director Urszula Antoniak’s Nude Area, a glossy, enigmatic pas de deux between two young women (Sammy Boonstra and Imaan Hammam). Eyeing each other in a women’s shower/locker room, they play an extended game of cat and mouse as they follow one another through the city. The women never speak — even when they are intimately connected, or when one spills food (deliberately)

keep mysteriously returning to his closet. The metaphor for James to come out is not subtle, but Tan’s short nicely mixes comedy, drama, and thriller elements, and Bowen is fantastic as the insecure James.

In Sworn Virgin, Hana, a teenage Albanian girl, makes a considerable decision to become “Mark” (Alba Rohrwacher), so she can live “as a man.” She is following the law of the Kanun: swearing lifelong virginity so she can live in the mountain village with the entitlements of patriarchy. It’s a considerable sacrifice, the effects of which are played out in this intriguing film. Director and co-writer Laura Bispuri, who adapted Elvira Dones’ novel, chronicles Mark’s reunion with his sister Lila (Flonja Kodheli), after 14 years apart. If the atmospheric Sworn Virgin exhibits a raw, chilly tone as Mark’s transformation unfolds, his integration into contemporary society becomes more interesting.

Manchego is an amusing short about a young woman (Lisa Diveney) who comes home to come out, but encounters her parents plans to set her up with a divorced man (Nicholas Agnew). Nicely played and filmed, Manchego is a bit slight, but it is worthwhile.

The Denver Film Festival also features several LGBT-themed shorts. One of the best is We Can’t Live Without Cosmos, a terrific, wordless, animated short about two cosmonauts who share a life together only to have things change when they train for a mission. Stylishly made, and unexpectedly moving, this import is highly satisfying. Also quite strong is The Outfit, by Yen Tan, about James (AJ Bowen), a conservative Republican congressman who is literally haunted by the clothes in his closet. When an outfit he wears is deemed “gayer than having anal sex with the Wizard of Oz,” he tries to get rid of it, but the shirt and belt 14   O CTOBER 21, 201 5

In contrast, the highly stylized Hallway, filmed in a secret sex club in New York, depicts a passionate encounter between two drug-fueled women. Shot in black light, the actresses (Margaret Singer and Sarah Ellen Stephens) have multi-colored stripes painted on their faces to emphasize their expressions. This also gives them an otherworldly quality as the silhouetted bodies couple and uncouple as things grow increasingly more tense (and intense) between them. The Denver Film Festival will also screen two films by out filmmakers: Nicholas Hytner’s Lady in the Van, based on the play by Alan Bennett, stars Maggie Smith as a woman who lives in a caravan parked in a man’s driveway, and Cemetery of Splendor the latest trance-inducing film by Thai director Apichatpong Weerasethakul, about a soldier with sleeping sickness. MY MOTHER’S LESBIAN JEWISH WICCAN WEDDING

TAVERNHG.COM/SOILED-DOVE

WE WITNESSED THE NEW MUSICAL COMEDY BASED ON A TRUE LOVE STORY … AND WANTED TO MARRY IT MORE THAN A STORY OF love for family and gay rights, My Mother’s Lesbian Jewish Wiccan Wedding, directed by Richard H. Pegg, is a timely “culture-shifting show that opens the hearts and minds of everyone who sees it,” as producer Diane Gilboa puts it. I’d have to agree. Written by Canadian husband-and-wife team, David Hein and Irene Sankoff, the show is the current ‘dark horse’ of musical theater, mark my words. Wedding tells the story of lead character Claire’s messy divorce and how she leaves her hometown of Lincoln, NE and heads to Ottawa, Canada to make a new life. Claire (Victoria KnightAllen) initially becomes roommates with cat-lover Michelle, played by the talented Elizabeth Brooks, who in real life has certainly been told she’s Jane Lynch’s doppelganger. With intertwined narration by Hein’s character David (played by local favorite Drew Hirschboeck), we’re taken on a heart-felt exploration that leaves the audience laughing, crying, and cheering for more. This song-and-dance show has many standout performances and musical numbers that are true crowd pleasers. Choreographer Reace Daniel makes the intimate Soiled Dove stage seem Broadway-sized with his entertaining dance numbers, and costume designer Ann Piano brightens up the stage with her colorful and pride-worthy costume design. Wedding is actually the true story of David Hein’s mother and their life’s journey with one another. Claire, a lost soul wrestling 1 6  O CTOBER 21, 201 5

with her identity, finds a new job in Ottawa, which brings new opportunities and a chance to truly find herself — albeit in a porta-potty. With a little help from matchmaker Michelle, Claire soon falls in love with Jane (Leslie Randle), a feisty redheaded Wiccan. Eventually, Claire finds the courage to come out to David her teenage son (Corson Lewarne), her ex-husband Garth (Ed Hickok), and her homophobic Jewish mother. The show is chock-full of great musical numbers with stellar performances from keyboardist Trent Hines, bassist Harry Olsson, drummer John Olsson, and the ensemble cast: Corson Lewarne, Kristen Poole, Ed Hickok, Lilli Hokama, and Christopher Wells. Some of the musical highlights for me were the songs: Ottawa, My Friend Jane, Double Date, Romance 101, and the touching ballad, Nebraska. My Mother’s Lesbian Jewish Wiccan Wedding truly is a mustsee and is now playing in Lowry Town Center’s Soiled Dove through November 8.

Embroidered chinos, a printed polo, and a pastel belt master the on-campus style, while a golf glove and a single club give the look links cred. Bonus points for that gnarly faux throat-slit, to add a bloody splash of cringe factor. Can’t be wholesome AF all the time — unless you’re Kevin, of course.

Unemployed Rentboy

Left Shark

On the heels of the widely publicized hacking scandal that destroyed AshleyMadison.com, the abrupt shutdown of Rentboy.com sent shockwaves through the undercover male prostitute community, and we should all take a moment to mourn its death. When you’ve pulled yourself together, dress up as your favorite poor-to-whore escort in a business suit/BDSM getup that looks like it’s been dumpster diving for the past few days. Top if off with a sign that reads “Will Work for BJs.”

Whether the confused, boogie-down Left Shark during Katy Perry’s mixed-reviewed Super Bowl XLIX performance was planned or not, one thing is certain: the bumbling blue fish was the real winner that night, and it sent gay Twitter into a tizzy. Longtime Perry backup dancer Bryan Gaw was the man behind the mask, but you don’t have to track him down to get your hands on it. The Gruesome Taste of Colorado:

Alfred Packer the Colorado Cannibal Mike Yost

T

he grisly tale of Alfred G. “Alferd” Packer and his ghoulish dining habits are well known to most Colorado locals and even immortalized in some communities.

The city of Littleton hosts their annual Alferd Packer Bacon Party, a fundraiser for nonprofit organizations with live music, rivers of beer, and mountains of sizzling bacon. (Just be sure to inspect the meat carefully before consuming.) The campus eatery at the University of Colorado Boulder is famously called the Alferd Packer Restaurant and Grill, complete with menu items such as El Canibal Mexican Specialties and the tasty Egg McAlferd. Packer’s tombstone (in Littleton Cemetery) was stolen so often and placed in front of the homes of Littleton residents as a prank that the city had to cement the tombstone to Packer’s gravesite. The infamy began in February of 1874 when Packer and five other men attempted to cross the rugged and unforgiving San Juan Mountains in the middle of an unrelenting winter. Packer emerged from the wilderness 66 days later — alone and well fed. As for Packer’s five companions, their bodies were later found at a campsite near present-day Lake City, Colorado. One of the bodies had been beheaded, others had crushed skulls with chunks of flesh stripped from their bones. Packer later confessed to cannibalism (the first of several conflicting testimonies) and was later sentenced to death. Larry Dolan, a saloon keeper at one of Packer’s trials, reportedly quipped, “You man-eating son of a bitch. There was seven Democrats in Hinsdale County and you ate five of them!” But not only did Packer avoid execution by hanging, he lived out his remaining years comfortably in Littleton until his death in 1907. According to the Littleton Independent, Packer’s last words were, “I’m not guilty of the charge.”

2 2  O CTOBER 21, 201 5

“There’s a photo of [Packer] as an old man sitting outside a door in a chair,” says Sonya Ellingboe of Historic Littleton, Inc., a nonprofit working to preserve Littleton’s heritage. “An old man with a pot belly and suspenders and a beard. He used to tell stories to local kids, and he was well liked at that point.” So how did a man once nicknamed the Hungry Hyena pass away in his home entertaining children with his mountain adventures? And was Packer truly innocent of the charge? Born in Pennsylvania in 1842, Packer enlisted in the military when he was 19 during the American Civil War, joining the 16th US Infantry of Minnesota. But before Packer saw combat, he was medically discharged due to epilepsy.

Packer was jailed and the bodies were found later that summer. The corpses had been mutilated, a large portion of flesh missing from the thigh of one body.

Packer later worked as a mountain guide, and in November of 1873, he led a 21-man group from Bingham Canyon, UT to an area near Breckenridge — a 400-mile trek.

But Packer proved to be a poor guide. After three months in the wilderness, the group was lost, their provisions reduced to chopped barley. The men accidently came across the Ute camp of Chief Ouray, who provided food and shelter for the weary travelers. Packer and five other men decided to push forward toward Breckenridge at the remonstration of Chief Ouray who emphasized the trails were covered in several feet of snow and impassable. When Packer emerged from the mountains two months later, he claimed he had been separated from the group, surviving on rabbits and rose buds. But when confronted about carrying the possessions of his companions, Packer alleged that the men died along the trail, admitting that he and the survivors resorted to cannibalism until he

was the only one left. Packer was jailed and the bodies were found later that summer. However, the corpses were discovered together at a campsite, not separated as Packer had claimed. The bodies had been mutilated, a large portion of flesh missing from the thigh of one body. But before Packer could be tried, he escaped. For nine years, Packer avoided capture until he was recognized by a member of the original 21-man group at a saloon in Fort Fetterman, WY. Packer was arrested again and taken to Denver where he made his second confession, this time claiming the group got lost, ran out of food, and bivouacked near present-day Lake City. Packer added that he left the camp to scout ahead. “When I came back to camp after being gone nearly all day, I found the redheaded man [Shannon Bell], who acted crazy in the morning, sitting near the fire roasting a piece of meat which he had cut out of the leg of the German butcher, Miller. The latter’s body was lying the furthest off from the fire down the stream, his skull was crushed in with the hatchet.”

in May of 1883. The judge of Hinsdale County declared that Packer “be hung by the neck until dead, dead, dead.” Packer’s sentence was overturned three years later due to a legal technicality. He was tried again and convicted with five counts of manslaughter, and sentenced to 40 years at the Canyon City State Prison. Polly Pry, a reporter with the Denver Post, believed in Packer’s innocence and used her position and connections with Colorado Governor Charles Thomas to parole Packer in 1901. He then worked as a security guard at the Denver Post before he died in 1907, his burial and tombstone paid for by the US military. “Historic Littleton Inc. put on an Alfred Packer trial a while back,” says Ellingboe. “I always felt that probably [Packer] shot Bell in self-defense and did not kill all those other people.” The mock trial took place at Littleton’s Town Hall in September, 2002. Actors played the parts of Packer and the judge with the audience serving as the jury.

“The other three men were lying near the fire. They were cut in the forehead with the hatchet,” Packer continued, adding that Bell charged at him with the hatchet before he shot him twice in self-defense.

David P. Bailey, Curator of History at the Museum of Western Colorado, presented new evidence to the crowd, such as a Colt revolver found in 1950 at the campsite. Two rounds had been fired from the gun’s chamber, corroborating Packer’s claim that he shot Bell twice in self-defense.

But despite his testimony, Packer was convicted of murder

The final verdict? Alfred Packer was not guilty of the charge.

Jello worms: Not only are these yummier than plain spaghetti, but you can also include your favorite adult spirit to give these wigglers a kick. Just take a bunch of bendy straws, pack them closely together, secure with a rubber band, and place in a glass. Make Jello according to box instructions (I suggest mixing lime and orange to get a wormy brown color and interesting flavor), then pour the mixture into the straws. When the Jello has congealed, oddly realistic edible crawlers will come out.

Used tissues: Edible paper, aka sugar sheet, is often used for cake decorating. Crumple bits of it and get creative about the boogers and snot you fill them with. Tiny pieces of brown or green, dyed Rice Krispy treats make good boogs, and gel icing can be pretty convincing snot when it’s the right color.

Dry bones: Place a marshmallow on each end of a pretzel stick and cover with melted white chocolate. Dry on wax paper.

Pimples: Drain a can of lychees. Fill them with red gel icing and whipped cream and place a black or white jellybean in the filling so just the very end shows. They’ll produce a nasty “popping” effect when squeezed.

Bloody brains: Most Halloween brains are made from a gelatin mold, but if you’re serving the Jello worms, you don’t want to overdo it. An alternative, and likely to be the only vegetable dish on your table, is a whole cauliflower. It naturally looks quite brain-like, and if you add the right dressing for color, you’ll have a bloody mess. Remove the cauliflower core and place it on a lightly oiled baking pan. Drizzle olive oil and salt on the cauliflower and bake on a middle rack at 450 until tender (about an hour). Pour your favorite blood-colored dressing, like raspberry vinaigrette, over the cooked cauliflower. 24   O CTO B E R 2 1 , 2 0 1 5

Vincent Groves Vincent Groves is probably the most prolific serial killer in Colorado history, making his mark between 1979 and 1988. At a hulking 6 foot 5 inches tall, he was a former member of Wheat Ridge High School’s star basketball team and student council. Groves’ focus was on strangulation of young women; some prostitutes who worked on Colfax Ave, others just acquaintances. Though he was only convicted of four murders, Groves had been linked to 24 homicides. He died in prison on Halloween in 1996.

Felipe Espinosa Possibly the first serial killer in Colorado, Felipe Espinosa killed around 32 residents within a year during the mid-1800s. A Mexican immigrant described as intensely religious with a grin like a jack-o-lantern, Espinosa took out his rage with the US government alongside his brothers until his assassination by Thomas Tobin in 1863. Tobin brought the heads of Felipe and his cousin Jose to back Fort Garland. It’s said that Felipe’s head was kept in a jar on a newspaper editor’s desk and eventually made its way to the Rocky Mountain News. 2 6   O CTO B E R 2 1 , 2 0 1 5

Scott Lee Kimball Scott Lee Kimball, also known as Joe Snitch, is currently serving a 70-year sentence for confessing to the murders of four victims — three women and his uncle. Convicted in 2009, Kimball committed the murders while on a supervised leave serving as an FBI informant between early 2003 to late 2004. The Boulder County resident was also one of several suspects tied to a mass murder of 11 women (one pregnant) discovered in a grave in West Mesa, NM in 2009, but Kimball denied involvement. The women all disappeared around the same time as Kimball’s killing spree.

Luis Jose Monge The last recorded execution in the US, Luis Jose Monge’s story reads a bit like The Amityville Horror. The Puerto Rico native who grew up in New York was living as a salesman in Denver with his pregnant wife and their 10 children in the 1960s. Monge beat his wife to death with a steel bar as she slept and stabbed his 11-month-old daughter Teresa before he turned on two of his sons, choking Vincent (4) and bludgeoning Alan (6) with a steel bar. Immediately after the incident, he turned himself in. The murders were apparently done to cover sex crimes he committed with his own children. In 1967, he requested to be hanged in front of the Denver City and County building at high noon and was denied. He was executed a few months later at his own request in a gas chamber.

The Ghostly Inhabitants of Cheesman Park Mike Yost

F

So when it comes to the abundant ghost sightings in Cheesman Park, I’ve always adhered to a maxim made famous by the late astrophysicist Carl Sagan: “Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.” But where hard evidence is lacking, stories abound. Many Denver denizens believe the spirits of the dead regularly stroll through Cheesman Park. The Rocky Mountain Paranormal Research Society’s website hosts several personal narratives of unearthly encounters including misty apparitions winding through the trees at night, cold spots in the park that give people the chills, and mysterious voices that inquire from the darkness, “What are you doing here? Leave me in thy peace!” I’ll acknowledge that these claims of sullen specters scaring park visitors have some historical merit, complete with grisly details. Long before Denver was a sprawling metropolis with overpriced apartments, Cheesman Park (along with Congress Park and the Denver Botanic Gardens) were all part of an Arapahoe Indian burial ground. In 1858, General William Larimer converted those same grounds into Prospect Hill Cemetery, the only cemetery in Denver at the time. It was divided into isolated burial sections such as Calvary Cemetery for Catholics. In 1873, the entire area was rebranded as Denver City Cemetery. It wasn’t until 1890 that those same grounds were declared a public park. Three years later, the city hired undertaker E.P. 2 8   O CTO B E R 2 1 , 2 0 1 5

McGovern to relocate more than 4000 graves from present-day Cheesman Park to Riverside Cemetery. McGovern was contracted $1.90 for every grave he relocated, but allegations soon surfaced that he and his workers broke apart the skeletons, shoving the remains of each corpse into several smaller caskets to turn a larger profit. The city fired McGovern and erected the park before all the bodies were moved. It’s difficult to know for sure how many remain, though some estimates run as high as 2000 corpses. Personally, I find it grimly fascinating that when the LGBT community gathers every summer for the Pride Parade on park grounds, many are literally treading upon the bones of the dead. And those dead continue to resurface. In 2010, city workers who were digging trenches for an irrigation system near Cheesman Park’s iconic pavilion unearthed four skeletal remains, all of them dated at more than a century old. But do these desecrated dead haunt the living? I live near Cheesman Park and have wandered through the grounds on many a moonlit night, complete with eerie fog hovering silently above the grass. But I’ve never bumped into a 19th century Denver resident (at least that I’m aware of). I’ve never heard mysterious voices or walked through cold spots that gave me goosebumps. Not that I’m opposed to the possibility of an encounter with a talking cadaver. Nothing would make my frequent nightly sojourns more intriguing than trying to explain to an apparition of the 1800s that his or her former gravesite is now used for hookups on Grindr. And if that conversation ever happens, I promise to first take a picture of my spectral acquaintance and post it online. After all, such an extraordinary claim would require extraordinary evidence.

Lumber Baron Inn Scottish immigrant John Mouat made a fortune in the lumber industry and he built many of the structures that formed early Denver, including his mansion in the Highlands. The huge house had many owners over the decades, but it eventually stood unoccupied in the 1970s. Two runaway teenage girls were inexplicably murdered in the empty mansion, and their cases were never solved. The building was restored and now serves as an inn with resident ghosts whose disembodied footsteps sometimes unsettle the guests.

Capitol Building A female apparition wearing a long dress is said to haunt the State Capitol, although no one knows what she’s doing there — she died years before women’s suffrage. She’s been spotted in the capitol and in the tunnels beneath the building.

Whitehead-Peabody Mansion At least a dozen ghosts and many disturbances — from chandeliers flickering to falling books — have been spotted at this old house, which was (for a short time) a gay bar called Spirits. During the 1970s, one ghost is said to have poured a beer down the shirt of a homophobic cook. You can find allies in the unlikeliest of places!

Molly Brown House

Fitzsimons Army Medical Center

If you can talk to the right person (Mary Van Meter), you can hear more than a few anecdotes of haunted goings-on in the house of this famous Denverite who survived the Titanic and several musicals. If you can’t visit the museum, at least watch an intensely creepy clip claiming to capture Molly Brown’s ghost in a nearby building. YouTube “Ghost of Molly Brown.”

Originally christened Army Hospital 21 in 1918, Fitzsimons was the premier military hospital for most of the twentieth century before it was closed in 1999 and renovated to become part of Anschutz Medical Center. Building 500, which still stands today, is a particularly haunted corner, with sightings of reportedly angry soldier ghosts.

Cheesman Park and Denver Botanic Gardens Millennials may flock to Cheesman today for its spikeball- and acroyoga-friendly fields, but at the dawn of Denver in 1858, William Larimer set the land aside as a graveyard for elites. The public part of the cemetery filled up over the next few decades and fell into disrepair, and when the city ordered the graveyard to be emptied in 1893, thousands of bodies were left unclaimed. See Mike Yost’s story on page 28 for more.

Croke-Patterson Mansion

Sand Creek National Monument

Thomas Croke built the castle-like building in the early 1890s. Croke didn’t own the mansion long before he sold it to Thomas Patterson, a legislator and publisher of the Rocky Mountain News, whose family enjoyed the residence for a longer period. Since the Pattersons vacated the place, it has been a boarding house, radio station, and office building. During renovation in the 1970s, workers noticed that things in the house had been moved overnight. They left two Doberman Pinschers to guard their work, but the dogs were found on the sidewalk the next day after jumping to their deaths from a third-story window. It’s said that a child ghost haunts the mansion, but sightings of Patterson have been reported from the courtyard. The mansion is now the Patterson Historic Inn, so go spend the night and see if you can find that dog-killing phantom kid.

On November 29, 1864, staving off an imagined attack, Colonel John Chivington and 675 men slaughtered a group of Cheyenne and Arapahoe natives killing an estimated 163 people, two-thirds of which were women and children, and proudly displayed mutilated body parts as trophies in the Denver Theater. One year later, December 2, 1865, bison hunter Kipling Brightwater charged into Fort Lyons having witnessed a large camp of Cheyenne, but dispatched soldiers found no one. These sightings continued throughout the 20th century, and most visitors today comment on the heavy emotions they experience at the site. Many believe these spirits will linger until the US Government delivers on its 1865 promise for reparations.

G

Best known for killing women in Washington from the late 80s to the early 90s, Ridgway had a penchant for prostitutes and runaways. Though it’s alleged that he murdered 71 women, in his court statements, he said he’s “killed so many, [he] lost count.” As of May 2015, Ridgway was moved to a high-security penitentiary near Florence, CO. The Green River Killer will now have more social contacts and freedom at a maximum-security federal penitentiary here, where he has been sent by Washington’s Department of Corrections officials. To release him to general population in his homestate would mean certain death for the well-known serial killer. Since his 2004 conviction, Ridgway, now 66, has lived in isolation at the Washington State Penitentiary. Now, he can mingle with other inmates and have access to work and other general population privileges in a CO prison. Ridgway got the nickname ‘Green River Killer’ because, much like a horror movie boogeyman, he would slaughter his victims and dump their remains into a secluded spot in nature. In this case, he would rape, choke, and abandon their corpses in the woods near the Green River in Washington. Gary Ridgway is to the Green River what Jason Voorhees was to Crystal Lake — a real American Horror Story, indeed. Investigations reveal that Ridgway would go back and admire his handiwork so much, that he’d continue to defile the bodies 3 2   O CTO B E R 2 1 , 2 0 1 5

sexually. Some of the victims were not found until well after they were dumped, the remains often comprised of merely skeletons. Ridgway was methodical in his work, sometimes altering the crime scene and moving the bodies over state lines in order to confuse police. Often, after his murders, he would hold yard sales to sell his victims’ clothing and jewelry to be rid of evidence that could put him away. On April 7, 1987, police took samples of Ridgway’s hair and saliva and matched him to evidence obtained from his victims. In November of 2003, he was up for the death penalty. He made a deal with investigators, however, and revealed where he hid many of the bodies of young women who were still missing, agreeing to plead guilty to any future cases where his confession could be validated by evidence. In December of 2003, Ridgway was sentenced to 48 life sentences without parole, to run consecutively, making him the most prolific serial killer in American history. In a 2013 interview, the seemingly-unremorseful Ridgway confessed to murdering 75–80 women — nearly twice what he was convicted for. Between police, the media, and others related to the Green River Killer investigation, no one knows if he’s telling the truth or is simply seeking attention. In an interesting twist, Colorado Corrections Secretary Bernie Warner told the Federal Bureau of Prisons last month that the state is transporting Ridgway back to Washington. After hearing concerns from law enforcement in Washington who need quick access to Ridgway in case they need to interview him concerning open murder investigations, Colorado prison officials have agreed a transport is in order.

HOW DO WE SOLVE A PROBLEM LIKE PINTAURO? SOMETIMES WE DON’T GET THE spokesperson we want;

we have to work with the celebrity we are dealt. But after various tenuous statements by former child star/ newly minted HIV-positive activist Danny Pintauro, I got off the bandwagon when he claimed to have been infected through oral sex.

Mark S. King My discomfort began as I sat in front of my webcam, waiting to join Danny Pintauro in a segment on Huffington Post Live. Danny had recently announced on an Oprah special that he was living with HIV, big news for fans of Who’s the Boss? and those who loved the precocious little boy Danny played. Before my virtual entrance, Danny was telling host Nancy Redd how he was infected with HIV. He wanted to explore “rougher sides” of his sexuality, he explained. And wouldn’t you know it, the first guy he hooks up with for that purpose offers him crystal meth. “And you combine meth, which completely ruins your immune system,” he said earnestly. “You combine having been up a good 12 or 13 hours … you combine that with some rough but safe sex, believe it or not, and it’s just a potent combination.” My jaw dropped. Did Danny Pintauro just attribute his HIV infection to using meth and being tired? Did he just say that he had safe sex, “believe it or not?” 3 4   O CTO B E R 2 1 , 2 0 1 5

My jaw dropped. Did Danny Pintauro just attribute his HIV infection to using meth and being tired?

No, Danny. I don’t believe it. While gay meth addicts are many times more likely to test HIV positive, it’s because they engage in high risk behaviors, specifically unprotected anal sex, and not because they missed a good night’s sleep. Danny went on to explain, or at least presume, that his sex partner’s viral load “had to have been very high, because that’s the easiest way to contract it if you’re not being unsafe.” I was incredulous. I began to mentally prepare retorts to the celebrity. If you are not being unsafe, Danny, you will not become infected with HIV, regardless of your partner’s viral load. Prevention is a two-way street. Your partner posed no threat to you if you were being safe, which you say you were. Which is ludicrous because you were high on crystal meth, a sex drug known for evaporating condoms instantaneously. Statements like “we were safe, believe it or not” would be pure comedy gold at any Crystal Meth Anonymous meeting. But I actually said nothing to challenge his statements. When

I appeared on the segment a few minutes later, I welcomed Danny to the world of poz activism and identified myself as a fellow meth addict in recovery. I then threw out an inane softball question to our newly minted HIV-positive celebrity/ cautionary tale, because, well, he was on a popular sitcom and has the power to reach a lot of people. And because I totally wimped out. We don’t always get the spokesperson we want. We have to work with the celebrity we are dealt (ask any transgender activist in this Year of Caitlyn). And it’s unfair to expect a random person with a celebrity past to be conversant on every aspect of HIV important to us. Besides, Danny’s messaging around meth and gay men alone is worthy of our gratitude. It’s also true that Danny has set himself up for criticism and inappropriate judgments, not the least of which are coming from bloggers like me. In a universally vilified segment on The View, one of the hosts, a breathtakingly clueless idiot named Raven-Symoné, challenged Danny to “take responsibility” for his actions, as if she had just nabbed an interview with the latest mass shooter. If that was your last exposure to Mr. Pintauro, you’re probably feeling for him about now. So was I. That is, until he doubled down on his “I had safe sex” statements by telling US Magazine that not only had he been a condom-loving crystal meth addict, he was actually infected through oral sex. I better take a breath here. Ahem. Okay. Moving on. There’s no way to know the level of shame Danny Pintauro may be feeling around his addiction and HIV infection. And he must sincerely value his beloved place in television pop culture and hate to discolor it with his personal revelations. That took courage. But attributing his HIV infection to the infinitesimal risk of oral sex — because God forbid anyone picture the former child actor barebacking – isn’t the kind of transparency needed for a gay, HIV-positive spokesperson. And then, oddly, Danny added in his US Magazine interview that the “irresponsible” man he believes infected him — whose name escaped Danny for many years because there were presumably many nameless others during his meth binges — has been on his mind and he has been trying to find him, even searching through obituaries and whatnot.

DENVER’S BEST PAITO Soak up some sun, sip on a cocktail, and enjoy a juicy burger on Denver's best patio!

Danny’s strange fixation isn’t just a little creepy; it suggests a blame game that goes beyond Danny’s assertion that he just wants to be sure the guy “is okay.” Let us all hope that the man in question is living a healthy life somewhere safe from Danny’s well-intentioned but pointless quest to contact him. That man deserves his privacy at least as much as Danny Pintauro deserves his rocky, vexing media tour. Like the author? Check out his award-winning work at MarkSKing.com OUTFRONTONLINE.COM 35

What’s Surgery Got To Do With It? A TRANS PERSPECTIVE ON “ELECTIVE” SURGERIES WHEN TALKING ABOUT COSMETIC/RECONSTRUCTIVE SURGERY, we often don’t mention trans* people. Instead, we discuss our neighbor’s nose job, celebrity lap bands, and the Botox that 40-year-old housewives use to keep their edge. With the rise of trans* celebrities like Laverne Cox and Aydian Dowling, it’s about time we give their experience surrounding plastic surgery the spotlight.

Caitlin Galiz-Rowe Morgan Seamont is a 46-year-old anthropology grad student at CU Boulder. He’s also the Assistant Director of the CU Boulder GLBTQ Resource Center. Most importantly, he’s a very out trans guy who was willing to give me his take on reconstructive surgery and the experiences he’s had with the industry. This is by no means a comprehensive look at the trans* experience regarding the world of plastic surgery, but it’s just as valid a place as any to start. Before you proceed, do realize that discussing plastic surgery with members of the trans* community can garner anything from an informative and open discussion to an often-deserved tongue-lashing and cold shoulder. Be sure you’re certain the topic is up for discussion and that you proceed with respect for the process. That said, Mr. Seamont was happy to dish.

IS THERE ANYTHING YOU’D LIKE TO ESTABLISH 3 6   O CTO B E R 2 1 , 2 0 1 5

ABOUT TRANS* IDENTIFIED PEOPLE’S EXPERIENCE IN RELATION TO THE COSMETIC SURGERY INDUSTRY? In the trans* community, some of us decide to make use of the cosmetic surgery industry, but we don’t consider it to be “cosmetic” surgery, especially since more insurance plans are covering it as medically necessary.

DULY NOTED. WHAT PROCEDURES HAVE YOU HAD DONE THROUGHOUT YOUR TRANSITION? Top surgery in 2010 with Dr. Garramone in Florida. The reason I chose him is because he’s done a lot of work with other trans guys, so I was confident that his office and surgery staff would be good. I never would have gone to a surgeon in Denver who’d never worked on trans guys.

“ELE

IES

WAS IT AS GOOD OF AN EXPERIENCE AS YOU THOUGHT IT WOULD BE?

Yeah, it was, mostly because his staff was educated and trans* friendly. Also, Garramone’s work is on point as far as male chests go, because you don’t want an almost-male chest. I also got a hysterectomy in January 2015.

WHY DID YOU DECIDE ON A HYSTERECTOMY? I got it for two reasons: first, because I had insurance coverage for it. Second, so I wouldn’t see an OBGYN doc on a yearly basis, or again ever!

THERE COMPLICATIONS IN FINDING THAT INFO?

I picked [my doctor] because she was a lesbian, so I figured she would at least be familiar with the concept, which proved to be true.

It definitely wasn’t easy to find the OBGYN because I couldn’t find one that had worked on FTMs, but my own trans doc had recommended her. It did take me about a year to go through with the hysterectomy, mostly because I was worried about how the hospital staff would handle the situation. In the end they were great (even though I was on an all-women’s floor).

WAS IT EASIER TO FIND THE CHEST DOCTOR? Yeah, because most of the surgeons who work on FTMs advertise on the internet or are known in our community. You can just google them and see their work.

SOME PEOPLE CHOOSE NOT TO HAVE ANY PROCEDURES DONE. WHY WAS IT IMPORTANT TO YOU TO HAVE IT DONE? Because I REALLY didn’t identify with my female chest. I always wanted a male chest.

YOU DON’T CONSIDER A HYSTERECTOMY “BOTTOM SURGERY,” SO WHAT IS? If I were to get a metoidioplasty or phalloplasty, I would consider that to be “bottom surgery.”

WHAT’S A METOIDIOPLASTY? Basically, it’s a clitoral release which elongates a trans man’s d*ck and makes it more aesthetically like a normative penis.

DID YOU GO TO THE SAME DOCTOR FOR YOUR HYSTERECTOMY AS YOU DID FOR YOUR TOP SURGERY? No, I went to a lesbian OBGYN who didn’t have any experience with FTMs.

HOW WAS THE EXPERIENCE WITH SOMEONE WHO DIDN’T HAVE ANY EXPERIENCE WITH FTMS? I picked her because she was a lesbian, so I figured she would at least be familiar with the concept, which proved to be true. And she was great, but her staff sucked. 4 0   O CTO B E R 2 1 , 2 0 1 5

DO YOU WANT TO ELABORATE ON THAT? The first time I called to make an appointment, the person was totally confused about what I wanted and told me, “We don’t do that here; we don’t serve your kind.” I think she actually thought I was going the opposite way (MTF), but I really wanted to see that doc, so I called back a couple hours later, and this time the person who answered set it up with no problem.

WERE THERE ANY OTHER ISSUES WITH HER STAFF? Nothing too bad. It was just really awkward, sitting in a waiting room full of pregnant women.

DO YOU THINK THEY FELT UNCOMFORTABLE AROUND YOU? Yeah, I kind of wondered if they thought I was donating sperm.

YOU OBVIOUSLY KNEW A LOT ABOUT THE DOCTORS WHO DID YOUR PROCEDURES. WERE

DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE/ RECOMMENDATIONS FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE THINKING ABOUT GETTING ANY OF THESE PROCEDURES? Well, going back to chest surgery, there’s only about 10 doctors who do it, so you usually have to travel, which is just another expense. Plus you have to stay there for a week, as well as have someone with you, so it’s a big commitment financially and time-wise. You should also do some research through local resources to see what doctors in the area are experienced and competent working with trans folk. Oh, and talk to other trans* people who have had surgeries.

THE SKINNY ON SKIN

TIPS TO SAVE SOME SKIN THERE ARE ZILLIONS OF OPTIONS for topical skin-care products that are often vague in their claims. How do I even start?

Legit concern. (We’ll make it easy.) A solid regimen consists of three main ingredients: sunscreen, antioxidants, and a retinoid. Sunscreen should be at least SPF 30 (with zinc or titanium) and applied daily, even if there are no plans to be outside for an extended period. (Who doesn’t drive to work or run errands on most days?) Topical antioxidants such as vitamin C aid in preventing sun damage by cleaning up the destructive oxygen radicals created by ultraviolet rays. Retinoids, including retinol and Retin-A, are the best studied and are consistently shown to improve the signs of sun damage: wrinkles (through increased collagen production), pigmentation, and early cancerous changes. I have so many wrinkles and skin damage that I don’t know if there’s anything I can do at this point. What age is it best to get started with a skin-care treatment regimen? There is no “right” age. Undesirable changes of aging are due to factors we can’t control (genetics, facial expression, hormones) and those we can control (sun exposure, tanning-bed use, smoking). I know a tan can help define that six-pack when you’re young, but your face will thank you later. The

intense

Colorado

sun creates the perfect environment for wrinkles and pigment changes in people as early as their mid to late 20s — lines begin to “etch” into the skin. Botox or Dysport can relax the frown lines, crow’s feet, or forehead lines before it’s too late. Around the mid-30s, other changes appear — folds around the mouth, volume loss in the cheeks and undereyes, wrinkles, and texture changes. This is when patients come in to laser off wrinkles, zap their nose vessels, fill the deepening wrinkles, and clean up brown spots. What procedures are applicable to me as a man? The most popular nonsurgical cosmetic treatments for men are, in decreasing order, Botox, laser hair removal, microdermabrasion, chemical peels, and fillers. Botox injections are most popular in the frown lines and forehead (men tend to like their crow’s feet). My favorite site to inject filler in men is under the eyes where volume loss around the late 30s contributes to the under-eye hollows and dark circles. A simple injection of filler in this area makes a large but subtle difference. Our goal is subtle and natural results that help them look rested and restored to a younger version of themselves without anybody knowing anything was done.

Why I’m Still Young and Beautiful FACELIFTS AND OTHER PROCEDURES TO THE RIGHT, YOU SEE FRAN. Take a good look at this picture. How old would you say she is? Probably somewhere around 50 right? (This past month marked her 72nd birthday.) She did the usual celebratory things: a family party, dinner, gifts, and of course, cake, all while her family admired how good she looks. And they’re not the only ones. Fran is the oldest of four sisters, but she frequently gets mistaken for the youngest of them or, at times, one of their daughters. She was even able to work as a flight attendant for 40 years because of how great she looks. Caitlin Galiz-Rowe So how has she done it? Simple. Throughout her life she’s had a little bit of “help” from “the knife.” Lucky for me, she was more than willing to discuss the procedures she’s had and the impact they’ve had on her life.

WHAT KINDS OF PROCEDURES HAVE YOU UNDERGONE? I had my nose done, I had a breast augmentation, and I had a face lift.

WHY? The first I had when I was very young, 20 or 21. My boy cousins always made fun of me for my “Roman nose.” I kept looking at it and decided to get it done. It was no big deal, and I was very happy I got it. It gave me more self-confidence. I was happy with the breast augmentation but I wish I had gotten a smaller implant size.

WHY DO YOU SAY THAT? Because I like fashion, and with bigger

boobs you look more matronly and it’s harder to find clothes with a big chest. I got the facelift because I wanted to work longer. It was so annoying when passengers on the airplane would say “you look so tired,” and the younger flight attendants would nag me about when I was going to retire. By having the facelift, I was able to enjoy another 10 years of flying!

HAVE YOU BEEN HAPPY WITH THE PROCEDURES ON A MENTAL/EMOTIONAL LEVEL? Yeah, the only thing that has bothered me was the size of the breast augmentation. I think that was at least partly because I was anesthetized and when the doctor asked me if I wanted a bigger size, I said yes without thinking about it. But I’m okay with that now. I guess the moral of the story is: Don’t have a good friend be the surgeon to do it.

THE SKINNY ON SKIN

HOW DO YOU THINK THE PROCEDURES HAVE IMPACTED PEOPLE’S PERCEPTIONS OF YOU? Well, I know with my facelift, people always want to know how old I am and are surprised when they find out that I’m older than they think I am. I always tell people that there have been so many advancements that people don’t have to go under the knife anymore. There’s Botox and all these other things out there. And if they start young enough, it’s not invasive and they can still get the perky, rested appearance. The facelift was the one that impacted my life the most and I’m glad I had it done.

DO YOU THINK YOU’LL GET MORE WORK DONE IN THE FUTURE? Probably not. I might have a little Botox here and there for crow’s feet or a forehead wrinkle, but otherwise I’m okay.

DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE THINKING ABOUT GETTING ANY KIND OF WORK DONE? Yeah, just do your research. Know exactly what you want before you sign up to have it done. With a breast augmentation, make sure you know what size you want before-hand. And start young! If you start younger, you can usually avoid the more invasive stuff. Take care of yourself, eat healthy, and wear sunscreen even if you’re not always out in the sun. OUTFRONTONLINE.COM 49

PRIDE AND PARADISE IN PUERTO VALLARTA NORMALLY I HATE A WINDOW seat, but I’m glad to have one for the flight into Puerto Vallarta. Long beaches stretch out and meet the vast, bright-blue ocean, and where the two converge they create clean white foam that looks like meringue. As we descend upon the beautiful city, it’s no wonder people from around the world flock here.

Noah L. Jordan I’d been in town for all of about two hours — just enough time to take a cab from the airport, drop off my bags in my room, get the lay of the land, and poke around the CasaMagna Marriott Puerto Vallarta for snacks while I waited for my guide. It’s just too bad I didn’t get very far. As I parked myself on a nearby chair overlooking the pool, and seemingly never-ending ocean, I felt no need to leave, and quickly ordered a margarita and some grub from Las Casitas.

Cruise, and I was blown away. The pier was jam-packed with proud, gay men wearing every swimsuit imaginable. After a few chaotic minutes of getting everyone from the pier to the massive ship, we were on board, and the ship was buzzing with energy. The music blasted, the drinks were flowing, and before long we docked for lunch on the clothingoptional beach called Los Caballitos and in a blink, many of the guests on the boat took full advantage of the option.

Before I knew it, the rest of the team and my guide arrived and it was time to head to dinner. Up the mountain we drove to Costa Sur Hotel, which has quickly become one of the city’s top locations for LGBT weddings. High up on the mountainside, the view was nothing short of breathtaking as we watched the waves crash onto the shore, and listened to the ambient sounds while partaking in our food.

As we boarded the boat for our return home, the Gays Gone Wild portion of the trip really took hold. With everyone plenty of drinks in the hole, inhibitions were no longer an issue, and with that I give my warning: This cruise is NOT for everyone. What happens on the boat stays on the boat. But for those who are adventurous, nonjudgmental, and looking to make the memories … do it.

We couldn’t stay long because, despite the view, we were called to the Zona Romantica. Tonight was the beginning of Pride in PV, and as we roamed the streets during the opening night festivities, we were treated to drag queens and an air of celebration I’d never really experienced here in the states. It was intoxicating, and I was thrilled to be a part of it.

Exhausted and finally feeling the margaritas since my arrival from the Mile High City, I joined my fellow travelers at the Pinnacle at Mantamar for the Andrew Christian Fashion Show. Topher Dimaggio, Pablo, Diego, and Cheddy strutted their stuff down the catwalk for the throngs of gay men. (From my view in the front row I saw enough to satisfy my needs.)

Waking up the next day in what can only be deemed a small taste of paradise, I felt so lucky. We pulled up to the Los Muertos pier for the Wet and Wild Gay 5 0   O CTO B E R 2 1 , 2 0 1 5

It wasn’t until almost nine when I realized I was starving. In only a few short blocks, we landed at Maia, a tiny but

mighty restaurant connected to the Villa Mercedes Petit Hotel nestled in the Zona Romantica. As we dined until our hearts were content, we all laughed because for the first time, we truly realized how lucky we were to be there. And with that, we hit the streets to celebrate Pride on a night we wouldn’t soon forget. The next two days were a blur of adventure. On the third day, we spent hours taking in the scenery as we soared through the trees at full speed with Canopy el Indio. And the next day we splashed around the water, playing with dolphins at Dolphin Discovery. Which, in theory, would be a perfect date on Bachelor in Paradise. As we enjoyed the final moments of #VallartaPride, we watched the parade as it made its way through the streets of the Zona Romantica, and then headed to the center of town to party hard in celebration. The gays (and the tourists) in Puerto Vallarta know how to have fun. As we danced until the sun rose around us, Pride officially ended. We poured back into our hotels with just enough time to take a quick nap, shower, and relax for our final adventure. By this time, our massive travel group had dwindled to only a few of us and our beloved guide. We were the last survivors in our jam-packed week of adventures in paradise, and we were rewarded with a luxurious day at the Rivera del Rio, a boutique hotel on the outskirts of town. There, we were wined and dined by our gracious hosts. In the evening, we were treated to the most beautiful walking tour of the luxurious backdrop. We visited Elizabeth Taylor’s old home and watched the Flyers of Papantla descend to the ground in music and style. And as we stood watching day turn to night, Puerto Vallarta only continued to produce. It wasn’t a raging night out on the town, but it was exactly what we need to wind down from a high-energy week. As the sun rose on my final day in Puerto Vallarta, it began to feel like home. I started thinking about learning Spanish, finding a place to live, and most importantly imagining what I would do for pesos. As I sat on the beach (margarita in hand) watching the sunset, toes in the sand, I took one last photo of that impossibly beautiful sunset.

If asked, they seemed honest about offering the information, but it appears they were leaving it up to the person on the other end of the screen to begin that conversation. In speaking with many locals, HIV remains highly stigmatized and is something many choose not to discuss openly. Unfortunately, HIV stigma and the associated lack of comfort in discussing this virus continues to negatively impact many people around the world.

INTERNATIONAL SEXUAL HEALTH DIFFERENCES I WAS FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO have the opportunity to

take three weeks off from my responsibilities back home and travel to Germany with my partner. It was exciting to see some buddies I’d met through previous travels, and equally exciting making new friends. I was expecting some cultural differences and learned the best ways to interact with staff on trains, servers in restaurants, and furry German muscle bears in bars. For once, I got to have the cool foreign accent. I also learned that retail shopping does not happen often on Sundays, winking is used more frequently to flirt with someone, and they are much more direct in letting you know they aren’t interested in chatting or meeting. Brent Heinze, Senior Columnist What I was not expecting to experience was a huge difference in gay health and sexuality, especially relating to the ways they communicate about HIV. Most Americans are aware that Europe is known for having a more open stance about nudity and sex. It isn’t uncommon to see people sunning themselves naked on some beaches, boobs or willies bouncing around on television, or to have bars with back rooms where you can meet up with somebody, have a beer, mess around, get off, and return to socializing with friends. Their progressive attitudes appear to be somewhat stifled when 5 2   O CTO B E R 2 1 , 2 0 1 5

seeing how their communities are dealing with HIV status, stigma, and sexual risk-reduction methods such as PrEP. It surprised me, but reinforced feelings of pride about how far we in the US have come. In the past six years, I’ve seen a huge increase in the discussion of HIV status online and in person. It’s as simple as a plus symbol in a profile name or a typed narrative about their HIV status, if they are undetectable, or if they’re HIVnegative and taking a medication like Truvada to prevent HIV infection. In my travels, most profiles did not speak a lot about HIV or personal risk factors.

Presently, there are people around the world who aren’t familiar with PrEP, unable to access it, and/or have very strong feelings against it. I’m aware that it’s a relatively new treatment option to help decrease new HIV infections and reduce the associated stigma since people don’t need to be as concerned with transmitting it. Apparently, even with all of the scientific reports, Facebook postings, and a perceived global interest in doing what’s necessary and effective to continue working on ending the HIV epidemic, there continues to be much more work that can be done to help support other communities that may not have the same access to medications or information as we do in the United States. The high cost of treatment and lack of knowledge continue to be barriers. As some HIV-positive people continue to be concerned about stigma directed at them (and HIV-negative people still fear the virus or hurtful attitudes with taking medication like PrEP), I think it’s important to recognize that we can still make even more progress locally, nationally, and globally. We need to take the time and opportunities to talk about our sexual health in a variety of ways, including our interests, concerns, and methods to keep ourselves and our partners safe and excited. It’s important to ensure that we feel confident in discussing these things and not be ashamed of ourselves or scared of rejection or judgment from others. I’m returning from my international adventure with a true sense of pride about our national successes in addressing HIV and a renewed motivation to continue effective work in my community.

AGE IN THE AGE OF PLASTIC SURGERY IN PREPARATION FOR THIS WEEK’S column, I took the

easy route to inspiration — googling one of the themes for the upcoming issue, plastic surgery. Amid Kylie Jenner’s selfies flaunting her perfectly pouty lips, Kim Kardashian’s pregnant plastic-surgery rumors, and (again!) images of Kylie Jenner’s now-perfectly-perky boobs, there was an outlier — an article on baby boomers undergoing plastic surgery to stay competitive in the workplace. According to the piece, baby boomers are resorting to plastic surgery to maintain a youthful look, saying that it’s helped them avoid unwanted forced retirement due to their age.

Kelsey Lindsey While the article may be a little dramatic, the issue of ageism in the workplace — and in Hollywood, and among the sexes — is evident, yet one still shrouded when compared to other discriminatory issues. While we still have many prejudices in society to overcome, from race to sexual preference, many of these are slowly starting to be addressed and brought into the public consciousness. But ageism seems to have been somewhat forgotten in this age of activism. In a New York Times op-ed, author Anne Karpf argues that the semi-panic surrounding the large aging baby-boomer generation has cast older people into unfairly stereotypical and dependent roles, leeches of the nation’s resources and finances. But this is an overreaction. As we age, more Americans are either a) working past retirement or b) adopting the role of the caregiver themselves for grandchildren. 5 4   O CTO B E R 2 1 , 2 0 1 5

The misconception of older people as invalid, stale, and slowly unhinged is the way this thinking can fold itself into their overall thinking and wellbeing.

What worries me about the misperception of older people as invalid, stale, and slowly unhinged is the way this thinking can fold itself into their overall thinking and wellbeing. A 1994 study from the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology found that negative stereotypes propagated against older people do, in part, have a negative impact on memory. If an older person is repeatedly told by society that he or she is becoming less useful and less intelligent, he or she may embody these stereotypes. As much as I joke about wanting to be old (“You get to say whatever you want! Aquatic exercise classes! Bingo on the weekends!”), these ideas are troubling. As one of the largest generations of Americans age, perhaps their size will help bring this issue into a greater understanding.

If you outgrow them, donate them to someone who can get as much joy from them as you did. Zoey: You need to feed and water them and occasionally let the poor guys out of their cages. JackLynn: Suck harder so he can’t push you away! LaTexa: Keep your facial hair at a stubble, the length where it’s itchy and prickly, then grab that thing and slap your face with it.
