TRAN S PA R EN CY IN TRANS HEALTH
One Colorado released their study “Transparent: The State of Transgender Health in Colorado” this month. According to One Colorado Communications Director Jon Monteith: “This is the first report in the country that examines the health concerns of transgender people at the state level with detailed findings from a recent transgender health survey launched earlier this year and concrete recommendations for the medical community and health equity advocates to improve the health of all Coloradans.” Out Front’s Rob Barger combed through the fresh, raw data to bring you up to speed on a few of the findings: • The ACA has drastically improved health coverage for trans individuals. • The web-based survey was completed by 417 transgender and gender nonconforming Colorado residents. • Despite having a higher education, trans individuals are underemployed and underpaid. • “Transparent” makes many recommendations for health care providers on how they can be more sensitive and supportive to their trans patients. CYRUS — ID# 0685912 I’m a special dog looking for a special adopter. My new friends here say I’m good-natured, and they’ve noticed that I love to play! They also say I walk well on a leash! My coonhound nature means I’m vocal, so a private home would work best for me. Let’s meet today!
OUTFRONTONLINE.COM | DECEMBER 3, 2014 | 11
IN THE OUTFIELD WITH ROBBIE ROGERS Nico Stoerner IN ANTICIPATION OF HIS NEW MEMOIR “COMING OUT TO PLAY,” OUT FRONT had the distinct pleasure of chatting with out soccer star and self-proclaimed “speed queen” Robbie Rogers about everything from his childhood to his favorite Disney princess. Robbie is the kind of all-American athlete you could root for on the field and take home to Momma for dinner. His book is a page-turner, his good-natured charm will win you over in a heartbeat, and he’s dreamy to boot. Here’s what he had to say: You’ve been promoting the release of your book “Coming Out To Play.” What kind of feedback have you gotten from people about your story? It’s been great! I love when they say, ‘I read it in a sitting or two,’ and ‘I laughed at times, I cried at times,’ and … well you know. You read the book. It’s a journey of emotions with lots of ups and downs and at the end, it all comes back to soccer.
I read the book in an hour. It was great. Yeah, exactly. I think that’s the kind of book it is. You liked to tag along to your sister’s soccer games as a kid. What kind of relationship do you have with your sister today? A great one, actually — I just had lunch with her. We talk about everything, the good and the bad. It’s great to have that kind of support. Having grown up in a Catholic household, how does it feel knowing that Pope Francis is championing gay acceptance? I think it’s awesome, [but] I think it’s moving really slowly. You knew early on that you were different from other kids, and it wasn’t that you were gay, but that you were a twin who lost his brother in a miscarriage. How did you come to sense this without having been told? I can’t really remember why I felt that way … I just did. A lot of people in my family have a great intuition about stuff. I remember being downstairs and saying that to my mom, but I don’t remember why. That was a fascinating and poignant section of the book, and it even mentioned you saying, “He gave me his speed.” Yeah it was just instinct and intuition; it was really weird. I just “knew.” It’s clear from your blog that you have a close relationship with your L.A. Galaxy teammates. How have they responded to your book? They came to the book party and I gave them all books. They’ve been very supportive. They just got it, so I’ll see in a few weeks what they think. The Denver Rapids had an offer out for you just before you came out of the closet. Do you think you would’ve been happy playing in Denver instead of the Galaxy? I wanted to come home — that was the whole point of me coming back to Los Angeles. I love Denver. It’s a great club and the fans are amazing, but it wasn’t about anything else but me wanting to be near my family. Most of my family lives in Huntington Beach, so I just needed to be in an environment where if I needed to go home I could.
ROBBIE ROGERS FUN FACTS On a typical night out I am: Just hanging out, getting dinner and drinks with my friends. I usually drink: Red wines. On a typical date I like to: Get to know him better. Favorite Disney princess: Definitely “The Little Mermaid,” Ariel. My niece is only 16 months and she loves her, too!
How well do you know Denver? That’s a great question. The last time I was there I enjoyed a few coffee shops, but I haven’t had a lot of time to hang out and explore as much as I would like. When we travel, we [mostly] just stay in the hotel room, and then go to the game. My friends went to college [in Denver] and had a great time, but I haven’t had the opportunity to really take it all in. Do you remember any of your crushes as a kid? No. I was so closeted, I remember watching my first gay kiss between Jack and David [on “Dawson’s Creek”] and being really surprised because I had never seen anything like that before. But I was just so scared to even open that side of me.
12 | DECEMBER 3, 2014 | OUTFRONTONLINE.COM
What personality traits and physical characteristics do you look for in a guy? I’d say I’m a pretty mellow person so someone I could really sit and talk with and hang out with, someone I could take home to my family — kind of the normal stuff. I physically don’t have a type. More than anything, just someone I could hang with for hours and hours. Growing up, you loved “My Little Pony,” and ironically your favorite was Rainbow Dash, the blue pegasus with the rainbow mane and tattoo, right? I did some research. “Yeah! I think Eric [my co-writer] and I did that research at one point, too! It’s just perfect for me! A rainbow speed queen!” I know, right? The phenomenon of “brony culture” today that both straight and gay men share is particularly interesting. What do you think that says about social progress? So, so much. We’ve made so many strides, like the many states we can get married in. Instead of having the “gay ghettos” of the past, you find that cities and neighborhoods have become a mixed crowd. I think that’s a sign of us being increasingly more accepted. I think we’ve gotten to the point where we’re much more willing to open up, even though things are going a little too slowly. Would you consider yourself a “brony” today? I haven’t seen “My Little Pony” for about 17 years, I think. Maybe a little longer, so I don’t think I’m in that group anymore, but I need to get back into it! I’m sure they would be happy to have you! Before we close, would you mind sharing your guilty pleasure? A favorite vice? I’m one of those people who are ‘all or nothing’ and I’ve got a sweet tooth, so when I get a craving I go to town on a lot of ice cream and cookies … really all things pastry.

during the tour and purchase a mixed cocktail in the Feisty Spirits tasting room at the end to enjoy the finished product.
Chances are, you’ll buy local this season in some form or fashion, and though we’ve got some big (international) name brands here in Colorado, we can still take pride that the roots run deep throughout the state. A good many will even let you tour the facilities, such as:
HAYSTACK MOUNTAIN GOAT DAIRY (LONGMONT) Some of the best goat cheese in the state can be found at Haystack Mountain Goat Dairy. Their award-winning artisanal cheese-making process can be experienced firsthand on their creamery tour. The tour and cheese tasting takes approximately one hour and includes an educational session about cheesemaking, a tour of our different make rooms, and a guided five-course technical cheese tasting.
CELESTIAL SEASONINGS (BOULDER) Celestial Seasonings, one of the largest specialty tea manufacturers in North America, offers free daily tours. On the tour, visitors will see how their favorite tea is made, packaged, and distributed all over the world. Guests will learn where each ingredient comes from, and have the opportunity to experience “The Mint Room.” In addition, guests can try free samples of tea and purchase one-of-a-kind souvenirs from the gift shop.
STRANAHAN’S COLORADO WHISKEY (DENVER) We at Out Front love a good whiskey, so a tour of one of our local favs that includes the warm-bellied sip of the good stuff? We’re in. On the one-hour tour, you’ll get a good overview of the company, a lingering gander at the brew and production facilities, and hang out on the bottling floor. Make sure you bring your picture ID and arrive 10 – 15 minutes early or you might get left in the dust, sadder than an empty barrel.
COORS BREWERY TOUR (GOLDEN) The world’s largest brewery, Coors Brewery, sits on the Clear Creek River in Golden, Colorado. After a short shuttle-ride through Golden, visitors can experience a free tour that includes a brief history of the business, the brewery process, and some delicious samples of beer for those of legal age.
HONEYVILLE (DURANGO) What began in Durango in the 1920s as a man transferring his honey in a pickup to town is now a company with beehives all across the Rocky Mountains. Honeyville not only makes some of the best honey in the state, but also uses their honey to enhance jams, jellies, and even to make their famous Cinnamon Whipped Honey. Visit the Honeyville Factory Store to see their live glass beehive and watch how the honey is bottled in their country kitchen.
ENSTROM CANDIES (GRAND JUNCTION) This family-owned candy store, which began in 1929, is famous for its delicious almond toffee. Made with the finest, freshest ingredients, Enstrom’s toffee is now sold worldwide along with their toffee popcorn, truffles, and gourmet chocolate. See how they make their handmade candy at their store in Grand Junction. FEISTY SPIRITS (FORT COLLINS) Fort Collins’ first distillery, Feisty Spirits, opened in 2012 by a team that always tries making new and creative flavors with natural, organic ingredients. Take a free tour of their facility with one of the founders or the head distiller to get a truly behind-the-scenes look. INFINITE MONKEY THEOREM (DENVER) As an urban winery, Infinite Monkey doesn’t have a vineyard, but does have a great tour for visitors wanting to see how an urban winery works. The winery sources the majority of its grapes from the Western Slope and has them shipped to Denver where they make their delicious Colorado wine. For $25, spend an hour with the tour guide learning about the winery and tasting plenty of quality wine, including their famous canned wine. Phoenix Gold Mine was founded in 1871 and has a rich history that highlights the state’s pioneers and western spirit. Today, the mine offers tours that let visitors crawl through the tunnels and pan for gold. Other metals seen on the tour are silver, copper, iron pyrite, and tellurium. Cyber Center Connects Cap Hill Rex Fuller | Out Front & Center SHAWAN TURNER IS THE WELCOMING FACE OF THE GLBT COMMUNITY CENTER. Every day, she greets people from all walks of life and coordinates the many volunteers who make The Center’s front desk run smoothly. As she and her volunteers are fielding calls and directing visitors to activities, she knows firsthand about the importance of the David Bohnett Cyber Center to The Center’s visitors. “What if we didn’t have the Cyber Center? We’d be missing a lot of people coming in the door,” she says. Up to 22 percent of The Center’s visitors come in daily to use the Cyber Center. Open weekdays from 10am to 8pm, people come in to access the internet and work on the computers free of charge. “All you need is a picture ID and you’re set to go,” Shawan assures visitors. The Cyber Center was recently renovated with updated equipment intended to bridge the ‘digital divide’ for those without computer access. Ten terminals are available in the main area, while two others are installed in the Rainbow Alley space for LGBT youth to access at any time during drop-in hours. Visitors use the Cyber Center to create resumes and presentations, conduct research, search for jobs, and participate in other activities in a supportive environment. The renovation was made possible by a series of grants to David Bohnett Cyber Centers across
America. The “refresh” program began in 2004 to keep the Cyber Centers up to date. Every three to four years, each Cyber Center is supplied with brand new, state-of-the-art equipment. This year, the Foundation is funding refresh grants to 29 locations throughout the country. There are currently a total of 60 active centers funded nationwide, including locations in Tulsa, Orlando, Salt Lake City, Dallas, Tucson, Seattle, San Francisco, L.A., and New York City. Each is equipped with five to ten computer stations loaded with a broad range of updated programs and software for business and personal computing. Computer access is always free and job-search training, best internet practices, and online security is readily available. In establishing the Cyber Centers, tech entrepreneur and philanthropist David Bohnett’s vision was to provide LGBT communities with a “wired” hub through which its members could connect with each other and explore educational, professional, and recreational opportunities. Paul Moore, program officer for the Bohnett Foundation, said the Cyber Centers give LGBT people of all ages quality Internet access and provide a safe place to work and socialize. Shawan experiences the impact of the Cyber Center on a personal level every day. “One time, a gentleman came in who was really stressed out because he wasn’t able to use the computer at the library where he’d been going,” she recalls. “Before
he came in, he didn’t even know about the Cyber Center. He just came in looking for suggestions about where he could go to get online so he could send his resume out. He came here and was able to make connections with the people he needed to speak to and landed the job.” More information about the David Bohnett Cyber Center is available at GLBTColorado.org.
C AT C A F É C L A W S I T S W AY T O D E N V E R Amanda Moutinho EVERY CAT PERSON has a hole in their heart that can only be filled with lots of cat lovin’. It can be a dark existence for those who don’t have a furry friend in their lives. Luckily, the new cat café Denver Cat Company opening in December will finally help us get our feline fix. Cat cafés are all the rage around the world, because who doesn’t enjoy being covered in cats as they sip their coffee? Asia started the craze several years ago. Since then, they’ve been popping up in Europe and they’re finally starting to trickle to the United States, with Denver being one of the first locales. For the new Denver café, all thanks goes to Sana Hamelin, an attorney who left her job and followed her love of cats into owning her own business. “I was a corporate litigator who decided that was too stressful a life,” she says. “It didn’t satisfy my creative side at all. As an attorney, you never create anything. So I was on this path of wondering what to do with myself. I had just turned 32 and didn’t want to spend my 30s sitting in an office.” Sana’s been a cat lover since she was a child. She grew up in Saudi Arabia, a place, Sana says, that is filled with cats, but they aren’t seen as pets. She says her parents weren’t fans of cats, but Sana constantly kept her furry companions around. America is the first culture she’s experienced that has so much respect for cats and other animals, making them an important part of the family. “[Where I grew up], nobody gave any mind to the cats around,” she says. “No one tried to improve the cats’ lives. Even though that attitude was all around me, it never really influenced me. I loved cats naturally, and I never questioned it.” After quitting her job, she realized that cat cafés were on the horizon, and 16 | DECEMBER 3, 2014 | OUTFRONTONLINE.COM
she wanted to open one before someone beat her to it. So she took the plunge and started the process in July, using her savings and crowdfunding efforts. The café will feature a rotation of 8 – 10 cats from the Rocky Mountain Feline Rescue, and all cats will be available for adoption. Sana says one of the reasons she chose to work with the shelter was because the cats aren’t in cages and are free to roam about. That also means cats are used to socializing with people and other cats. For anyone apprehensive, Sana will be supervising in case the cats get — ahem — catty. Opening a new business is a process that comes one step at time, and Sana is finding out the cat cafés come with their own set of issues. Her challenges have been dealing with health codes and zoning permits, which is the reason she had to push back her November 15 opening date to mid-December. But she’s determined to keep moving forward. Since it’s such a new market, she’s hoping that as more cafés pop up around the country, each can start learning from one another. And for those who are hoping to bring their cats, you’re out of luck. The only cats at the café will be from the shelter, so save yourself some scratches from trying to transport your cat in the car, and just enjoy the cutie kitties already there. The café’s environment is going to focus on a cozy environment with mismatched mugs, art, books, and cats, obviously. Sana is including a book-lending library for customers. She is also partnering with Teller Street Gallery & Studios to bring in some local art. Beyond that, she is calling for any artists who want to display their work to contact her. For anyone anxious to visit the café, Sana says they can volunteer or donate to the cause. Meow’s a good time. For more information visit DenverCatCo.com.

“WE WERE LEGALLY MARRIED in St. Michaels, MD on Aug. 30, 2014. However, the official wedding ceremony was held in Black Hawk, CO at a private residence with many local and out of state friends and family, including Greg’s two daughters, Rachel and Taylor Shinbur. The wedding ceremony was held on Sept. 13. We have to give kudos to KT’s BBQ for being amazingly supportive of same-sex marriages and for their fantastic catering.”

Scott McGlothlen | Bleed Like Me A FRIEND RECENTLY ASKED ME if I ever sexually discriminated against poz guys prior to my own HIV diagnosis. Bizarrely, I couldn’t remember and had to take a thorough mental inventory of my sexual history (or all the times I could remember). It occurred to me that from the time I became sexually active, I didn’t reject anyone based on their status — and it wasn’t because I was well-educated on the topic. Around the age of 24, I had gotten out of my second major relationship and was on quite the prowl. Amongst my many chats online, I began talking with Colton, a man Scott McGlothlen about 18 years my senior who handsomely rocked his shaved head and furry body. This combo — a weakness of mine — gave me no other choice than to go to his place and sleep with him. When I got to Colton’s apartment, I discovered him to be quite the gentleman. Instead of treating me like a quick boy-toy, we took some time to get to know each other while he cooked some incredible food. Even though it wasn’t a date, it still seemed way nicer than most other hookups I’d been having those days. When it came to actual play time, that was nothing short of amazing as well. A few weeks later, Colton messaged and asked if I wanted to come over for another round. Who was I to say no? But before I could even throw on my coat, he had something to confess: He was HIV positive. It caught me completely off guard. No one had ever told me this before, and he apologized for not telling me the first time. In my early twenties, I would’ve caused a fuss over this. Back then, I enjoyed a little drama if I could play the victim and get all the empathy. However, my gut told me not to jump so heavily onto good old, juicy martyrdom. I’m not sure why, but I just didn’t feel endangered. So I told Colton that while I wished he would’ve said something before, I still wanted to come play anyway. Colton and I talked about safety and it sounded easy. Nonetheless, as we fooled around, I somehow felt extra cautious. We took a moment of post-coital rest, his warm, gooey mess all over me, before he jumped up to get me a towel. I laid there coated in his positive semen and it felt different ... yet I felt ok about it. And I didn’t know why. Looking back on my time with Colton, I realize that I was highly ignorant about HIV. Even with years of sex education, I didn’t really know how HIV worked beyond the barrier of a condom. And since none of my friends ever talked about it, I didn’t really think it existed anymore. It also didn’t help that I’d been sexually active for more than eight years before someone, like Colton, first disclosed his status to me. The reason I didn’t reject him was His honesty not only gave me (oddly) because his disclosure came a proper wake up call to the one round too late. Had Colton told me fact that this disease did still about his status in the first round, my own ignorance might have caused me exist, but it also gave me the opportunity to learn about how to run, but having gotten to know him prior to his disclosure, I found a man to properly navigate it. who I saw as kind and gentlemanly. So when he eventually did disclose, I felt I could trust him. Plus, his eventual honesty not only gave me a proper wake up call to the fact that this disease did still exist, but it also gave me the opportunity to learn about how to properly navigate it. Rejecting him would have only caused me to remain ignorant. Even though Colton and I quickly lost touch, I often think of him. He taught me that when someone discloses their HIV status, it’s not because they want to give a person caution, but rather they want to assure a person’s safety. Now that I am poz (the result of a freak accident from someone who didn’t disclose), I often revel in the irony that I am in the same shoes that Colton was once in with me.

Sorry, carb-smarters … this one’s gonna sting. There’s nothing like grabbing an artisanal loaf of Babettes french country bread and ripping off a hearty chunk to dip into your chili. (You know it’s the good stuff when there’s a floury residue left on your fingertips that screams, “I wasn’t made in a commercial oven 350 miles away!”) How the flavor gets better as the loaf goes from a fresh-baked soup BFF to a perfectly fermented crouton foundation is an added miracle, but don’t overlook what a gorgeous loaf paired with homemade preserves will do for a holiday bestie. Plus, it feels really good to say ‘boulangerie’ like a sexy French woman when someone asks where you got it. 3350 Brighton Boulevard • TheSourceDenver.com/ babettes

W H E R E C AT C A L L I N G R E A L LY C O M E S F R O M Pieter Tolsma IN CASE YOU HAVEN’T SEEN IT, a woman in New York posted a viral video about her experiences being catcalled as she walked about the city. The results involved a hundred or so men whistling, commenting, and occasionally following her. I’m saddened by this behavior but at the same time, I’ve never been catcalled on the street, much less bought a drink in a bar by a stranger. Why is she fighting off unwanted attention while I am chilling with a Diet Coke waiting for a smile? In addition to my issue with some oppressive RBF — resting bitch face, for those over 30 — the important difference comes down to masculinity and femininity and the issue of class. While we’d like to think we as society have moved past the idea of normed gender behavior, the truth is we haven’t. Heterosexual men are still expected to be the instigators when it comes to personal relationships and in their own damaged and frustrating ways, those guys on the street were doing exactly that. We’re also talking street culture, where these guys create and operate their identity. A woman, viewed as prey, walks through their area and they make a move in the way they’ve been acculturated as men. Until “what it means to be man” changes, they won’t behave any differently. In fact, as women respond by pulling further away, they’re only going to be more overt — the guys’ reputation depends on it. At first glance, you might think all the rules go out the window when it comes to the LGBT community. Think again. You may not see lesbians on the corner hollering at the ladies as they pass like it’s some sort of queer “West Side Story,” but we play by the same rules. Consider our bar scene for a moment. Who is dominant and makes the moves and who is receiving that attention? Being the butch one usually comes with the expectation of assertiveness and embracing power and agency. Straight culture splits power along gender lines and hands all the power associated with butch culture to men and expects them to perform masculinity ... and therein are the seeds of catcalling, harassment, and rape. How does our LGBT population roll with all this? We’re figuring out how to perform in public now that we have a degree of acceptance. The struggle is real. The ideas of butch and femme are just as potent for us as it is in straight culture. Who “dominates” who sexually is a common byline in our conversations and we often demean each other based on those associations. This is not as public and degrading as catcalling, but it’s on the same path. If the LGBT audience could live their identity as openly as our straight counterparts, it won’t be too long before someone makes a video about their walk through Boystown or Chelsea. LGBT folks often forget that we live in a world that’s dominated by heterosexual imagery. We’re bombarded by images and stories that teach us what it means to be a man or a woman. We might think these messages don’t apply to us, but we’re still being conditioned by their rules and norms. If we’re not aware of what we’re doing, we’ll continue to play out our own version of the masculine/feminine power exchange and fall into a similar rut as the heterosexuals.

For the Uninitiated: SnowHacks coolant. It’s also best that you keep your gas tank at least half full to prevent moisture from freezing up your gas lines. If you’ve got snow tires, strap those bad boys on. If you don’t, check to see if any suppliers are offering specials.

hether you greet winter with open arms wrapped in a North Face jacket or belt out a Godzilla roar and succumb to the urge to demolish Tokyo, there’s nothing you can do about the weather. Thankfully, there are plenty of things you can do to hack your way through winter rather than suffer through it. Properly prepare your wardrobe, car, and home before the next deep freeze settles in. Give Yourself a Lesson in Layering Rather than blowing your holiday bonus on the thickest and most luxurious coats and sweaters you can find, you and your finances will be better off learning how to layer your clothes so you stay equally warm and dry. We start off with the base layer, which is closest to your skin. To keep from smelling like hot garbage, opt for synthetic materials, wool (or even silk) to keep sweat from clinging to your skin and seeping into your clothes. Over that goes the heat-trapping, insulating layer. What you’ll wear depends on the weather for the day (or in the case of Denver, the weather for the hour). Go for something that’s breathable, light, insulating, and quick-drying. Your outer layer jacket or coat needs to shield you from the wind, rain, and snow. Whatever cutting-edge insulating and fashionable option you
choose, make sure it’s breathable, otherwise it’ll soak up your sweat like a sartorial sponge. Now all that’s left is a matching scarf, hat, gloves, and all of the other proper wintertime accoutrements. Driving Through the Driven Snow It’s a good idea to winterize your car as soon as possible so you’re well-prepared for that morning commute through the snow and ice. Take your car in for routine maintenance to avoid preventable breakdowns in the snow. You’ll also want to check your tire pressure often, switch to de-icer fluid for your windshield, check your battery, and make sure your antifreeze is half water and half
Housing in a Winter Wonderland Schedule maintenance for your heating system and roof ASAP. Even though both may seem fine now, there might be minor and inexpensive repairs that you can take care of to save yourself an icy headache later on. Keep your bills just as low as the plummeting mercury by reversing the direction of your ceiling fans. When it’s time to shovel the walkway and driveway, a coating of non-stick cooking spray or WD-40 on your shovel keeps the snow from clinging like that regrettable summer fling you once had. You know the one. While you’re outside, give your exposed pipes and their joints a spritz of WD-40 to help prevent them from bursting. Keep your floors clean and dry when you come in by setting out a shallow tray filled with small rocks and place your boots and shoes inside. Instead of checking the week’s forecast to get ready for winter, stay ready with these hacks and tips. A little innovation and preparation can help you beat winter like it stole something.
FI V E RE ASO NS TO ENVY GEESE Kyle Harris ON A LONELY WINTER DAY, it’s natural to envy the geese munching grass next to the frozen ponds in City Park. We know soon they’ll fly further South toward warmer climates and tastier roots. Sure, geese can be aggressive. They squawk and cackle, peck and charge, sometimes in mass. But who cares how they treat us obnoxious humans? We don’t envy their social skills; we envy their community, their nomadic life, and more. In celebration of our natural jealousy toward these honkers, here are five great reasons to wish you were a goose. Geese are naturally androgynous. No external features indicate a goose’s sex. Were we geese, we could play with our gender presentation, and our flock would get it: Gender is malleable. Nobody would ask annoying questions like, “But what were you born as?” or “What are you really?” (Of course, geese don’t have opposable thumbs, the ability to sew, or fashion-sense, so even though we humans suffer from sexual dimorphia, we can happily shift our gender presentation more fluidly than our feathered friends.) Geese travel thousands of miles each year. For the wanderer in us, how can we not envy the birds’ journey up and down the continent without cramped seats, luggage checks, long lines, and crotchety seatmates with daggers for elbows? Sure, we have cabin-controlled air, but imagine the wind blowing through your feathers as you fly in a gigantic V formation with hundreds of your best friends and enough space between you to honk but not feel claustrophobic. Lucky ducks. Geese are natural survivors. In the 19th and 20th centuries, pâté-hungry hunters nearly snuffed whole species, but geese honked out a song: “I Will Survive.” It’s a little known fact they taught it to Gloria Gaynor, who adapted it into her notorious anthem of resilience. 32 | DECEMBER 3, 2014 | OUTFRONTONLINE.COM
Geese have fabulous names like the bar-headed goose (an unapologetic drunk), the snow goose (a cokehead), the emperor goose (a drag king extraordinaire), pink-footed goose (a dancing queen), and Ross’ Goose. “Wait,” I hear you ask. “Who was Ross?” According to an article in “Time Magazine” called “Science: The Scabby-Nosed Wave” — scabby-nosed wave is a superior title for the bird, if you ask me — the goose was named after Bernard R. Ross, a merchant with the fur trading giant, the Hudson Bay Company. Lucky for the scabby-nosed waves, they didn’t have fur. Canadian geese breed envy in all of us in the United States because of their excellent education system, superior health care, and extraordinary politeness.

Relationship Violence: Beyond the Headlines Mindy Barton, Esq. Legal Director, The GLBT Community Center of Colorado DOMESTIC VIOLENCE, also sometimes called intimate partner violence, is being discussed everywhere right now because of the high-profile nature of some of the current cases. Within these conversations, there also needs to be a discussion of violence occurring in same-sex couples. It is important to know that both Colorado and federal law provides protections for samesex couples facing issues of domestic violence. Here are some tips on the topic: Domestic violence occurs in an estimated 1 in 3 relationships, and at about the same rate in same-sex couples as opposite-sex couples. The core of domestic violence is that one partner systematically asserts power and control over the other. It is rarely, if ever, mutual. Gender roles do not determine which partner is abusive. It is not automatic that the more masculine male or more “butch” female partner is the abuser. If you are a survivor of intimate partner violence, the best step to take
is to be clear with officers immediately that the abuser is not merely a friend or a roommate, but your boyfriend, girlfriend, spouse, or significant other. However you want to title your relationship is fine, but you should be solid in your statement that this is a situation where the investigation should be focused on possible domestic violence by an intimate partner. Domestic violence can look different for LGBT couples than straight couples for several reasons. First, an abuser can hold significant power around outing someone who is closeted. Also, many same-sex couples may have the same set of friends which can make it more difficult for a person to seek help or create an escape plan. Lastly, there can be struggles with finding LGBT-friendly and knowledgeable resources. Need help? Reach out! The Colorado Anti-Violence Program 24 hour crisis line: 888.557.4441. ll that money you’ve saved for the better part of a year moves quickly when you’re buying gifts left and right and planning your warm-weather escape as soon as the tree is tossed out onto the curb. Since it’s never a bad idea to find ways to save some coin this season, take a look at nine ways you can make the yuletide gayer without breaking the bank. HOST A HOLIDAY POTLUCK DINNER Who doesn’t like to go out for a fancy dinner around the holidays? Consider hosting a potluck where each of your guests will bring a dish for everyone to enjoy. You can make this a seated event or you can host a small cocktail party where everyone can chat, drink, and dig into the expansive buffet. ATTEND AN UGLY CHRISTMAS SWEATER PARTY IN TOWN Ugly Christmas sweater parties have become a tradition over the past few years, so check your local LGBT bar calendars to see if any are on the schedule. If you settle on a place that isn’t particularly gay, gather your gaggle for a guerrilla effort to make it a night to remember. Find the ugliest Christmas sweaters imaginable at your local thrift shops or at UglyChristmasSweater.com.

so — and the group decides in which order participants will select from the pile of gifts, generally by numbers randomly drawn from a hat. Once a gift is opened, it can be stolen by the next in line if they don’t particularly like their gift or, in most cases, just like any of the previous gifts better. This practice continues until the last person has opened the last gift, which ultimately gives that lucky duck the pick of the litter. Lots of fun and laughter at this inexpensive, home-based holiday event. BAKED HOLIDAY GOODIES FOR YOUR NEIGHBORS AND CO-WORKERS Get into the spirit of the season by dusting off those cookie sheets, muffin tins, and loaf pans. Turn up the holiday tunes and get cookin’ with a few batches of your signature baked goods (I’m rather partial to Carolyn’s Chocolate Chip Cookies from Martha Stewart), package them in holiday-themed containers with nicely tied ribbons or bows, and deliver them with a note of holiday greetings. SEE A HOLIDAY PERFORMANCE AT YOUR LOCAL GAY BAR Hundred to one there’ll be a jolly drag show taking place at your favorite gay hangout between now and New Year’s. But if that’s not on the calendar, see what else is happening that’ll help you jingle all the way. Try toy drives, holiday themed go-go boy nights, or game-based events, like trivia or bingo.
ROUND UP YOUR GROUP OF SCHEDULE AN AT-HOME HOLIDAY FRIENDS AND VOLUNTEER MOVIE MARATHON Not everyone is as fortunate as we are, When the weather outside is frightful, a night on the couch is so delightful. Pick and those circumstances really start up a few snacks and drinks, and invite to take their toll on people around the Make the Yuletide Gay your besties over for a holiday movie holidays. That’s why it’s important to give marathon. Some of my favorites include some of your time and energy to show you classics like “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation;” the “Home care about your fellow Americans by volunteering. You could try Alone” series;” “A Christmas Story;” and “Make the Yuletide Gay,” to locate an LGBT establishment that needs a few helping hands the adorable coming-out-at-Christmas story by gay filmmaker this season. The important part is that you and your friends are getting out there and giving back. Rob Williams. START A SECRET SANTA PROGRAM AMONG YOUR FRIENDS If you’re strapped for cash this year, quell some of the anxiety by suggesting a Secret Santa gift exchange among your friends instead of a free-for-all that can quickly spiral out of budget-control. If you currently only exchange a gift or two with a couple friends, this might not be for you, but if you have a large group of comrades, it’s an easy-on-the-wallet avenue to explore. PLAN A GAY-THEMED WHITE ELEPHANT PARTY There are different names for this type of party, but the concept is the same … and simple. Each participant brings one wrapped gift to the gathering — usually capped at reasonable price, like $20 or
SNAP UP POST-HOLIDAY CLEARANCE DEALS FOR NEXT YEAR One of my all-time favorite parts of the holidays is the post-Christmas clearance deals on décor and other holiday paraphernalia. I generally wait until about five days after Christmas when Target has slashed prices up to 75 percent, but it tends to be heavily picked through by that point. Nonetheless, you can still walk away with a bunch of incredible deals. Wait a little longer and the discounts delve into the 90-percent-off range at certain stores. The shelves will look like the apocalypse has started, but you’re literally paying a few cents for whatever’s left to enhance your holiday home in the future. OUTFRONTONLINE.COM

f you’re too busy to shop for your own groceries and/or don’t enjoy having to fight through the crowds to wait in line at the grocery store, you’ll be pleased to know that there are several grocery delivery services available in Denver — pretty handy if you’re the one in charge of the food on the 25th.
Nontraditional holiday grub to bring to the table Noah L. Jordan SOME FAMILIES CHOOSE HAM. OTHERS SETTLE ON CHICKEN. WHEN IN DOUBT you can never really go wrong with a perfectly cooked turkey. Growing up, my family had a strict set of traditional holiday menus, and every year my mother would execute those menus to perfection. There were never any major deviations, just slight alterations based on needs and requests. The ritual was set in stone, and we didn’t complain. It wasn’t until the kiddos moved out of the house that my mom finally spread her creative wings and started throwing us complete curveballs for Christmas dinner with “Christmas” meals from around the world. Since Christmas is celebrated in hundreds of different ways all around the world, there are more than a few options to spice up your run of the mill, ho-hum dinner. Choose a country and start there. Trade out that boring turkey centerpiece for something unexpected and a little more creative. Italians (much like Americans) love gathering the whole family together on Christmas for a feast. Dinner includes authentically Italian ingredients such as seafood and pasta. Vermicelli — fine long stranded pasta that can be cooked in broth — is a seasonal favorite and often used as the main focus of a traditional Italian Christmas. In France, the formal meal is eaten on Christmas Eve. La Vigilia Napoletana is a preChristmas feast that consists of roughly seven different types of fish. And while turkey is still a part of the meal in some parts of France, in
most areas the main protein is in fact, a plump Christmas goose. Parisians also add foie gras and oysters to their holiday meal. Not your jam? In India, Christmas is celebrated with a roast duck as the focal point. Spiced with local favorites garam masala and turmeric, the duck is a given a more traditional Indian flare. Stewed fruit is served alongside the duck, completing the holiday meal. The Japanese celebrate Christmas with dessert instead of a standard, traditional meal. Who needs a major protein, right? Skip it and start right at the sweet end. Similar to Victoria sponge, Japanese Christmas cake consists of a sponge cake base, a layer of whipped cream, and strawberries at its center. The cake is decorated with white icing and topped with even more strawberries. Rounding up the crew for the holidays doesn’t have to be the same every year — it can actually be fun and exciting. When my mom suddenly focused on “nontraditional” Christmas meals, we were thrilled. And sure, sometimes the meal was less than stellar but it was the thrill of the unexpected that fueled us. Take a walk on the wild side this year and pick up some ostrich meat or alligator bites from the grocery store. Buck tradition and pick something outrageous as the focal point of your meal. The possibilities are endless. Just because your mom, your grandma, and your great grandma made it doesn’t mean you have to do the same. And if you fail, screw it … order a couple pizzas. A pizza at the center of the table is still more exciting than turkey or ham.

POP’S NEWEST QUEEN TALKS GAY ROOTS, HOW BABS TAUGHT HER TO SING, AND HER HIT SONG ‘HIDEAWAY’ CHRIS AZZOPARDI 42

E
ven before making the streets of New York City her own private dance floor for “Hideaway,” Kiesza was courting the queers. The lead single off the 25-year-old’s major-label debut, “Sound of a Woman,” has certainly boosted her appeal within the community, but the LGBT community and this former sniper-in-training for the Canadian Army actually go way back. On her way to the airport, Kiesza called to chat about pretend-marrying her gay best friend, how Barbra Streisand taught her to sing, and her request for the drag queens. Have you been feeling the LGBT love yet? I’ve been feeling it before any other love actually. Even before “Hideaway,” when I was doing other projects, the LGBT community was always the community that supported me as a brand new artist. I always felt supported by them before anyone else, so it’s a really special community to me. When did you know the LGBT community was in love with you? I would actually meet the people who were coming to my shows and it showed me who my audience was, and I had a very strong gay following, which is amazing. They’re so enthusiastic, and they come dressed in clothes that emulate my own style. You know you’ve made it when guys are doing you in drag. (Laughs) Yeah, I saw some people doing “Hideaway” in drag, which is amazing. I wanna go to a drag show and see someone performing “Hideaway” live! Because of your mom, you grew up on big voices like Barbra Streisand, Aretha Franklin, Etta James, and then later Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston. How did listening to them affect your vocal technique? Without realizing it, I learned a lot about my voice by singing along with them. I didn’t actually learn to sing the way I sing now until I started going to music college and really finding my voice as a songwriter, but I was always singing along (to them) growing up and I definitely developed my voice that way.
THE LGBT COMMUNITY WAS ALWAYS THE COMMUNITY THAT SUPPORTED ME AS A BRAND NEW ARTIST ... IT’S A REALLY SPECIAL COMMUNITY TO ME.
“Hideaway” is obviously influenced by ’90s music; how about the rest of “Sound of a Woman”? Very influenced. Once I wrote “Hideaway,” I had this vision of the whole album being reminiscent of this era. I love the early ’90s, and not just the dance music. I like the R&B. I love all the ballads. I love the hip-hop. I just wanted to pay homage to an era I love so much, but also take it and make it current. That was the idea — to have that nostalgia in the music, but also have it be very fresh and new at the same time. Speaking of the ’90s: ’NSync or Backstreet Boys? I was a Backstreet Boys girl. Britney or Christina? Christina. Whitney or Mariah? Whitney. I mean, Mariah’s an amazing singer, but I was definitely more blown away by Whitney. “Full House” or “Saved by the Bell”? That’s a hard one! I feel like I was a bit more of a “Full House” kid. Actually, I was very much a “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” kid. I was all about that show. Destiny’s Child or TLC? Let’s go with TLC. I listened to Destiny’s Child a lot, but TLC had a lot of fashion influence on me.
Growing up, who were some of your favorite Canadian musicians? I was a big fan of David Foster growing up because I was really into songwriting. I actually was more focused on songwriting first, and I was really inspired by his writing on all of those Toni Braxton songs. Vocally, Celine, and you know also who I really loved growing up? Sarah McLachlan. You’ve written some songs for Kylie Minogue and Rihanna, for whom you penned a yet-to-be-released tune that’s said to have a very particular message. What would that message be? PROTECT YOUR JUNK: T H E ‘ M U S T- A C H E ’ Q U E S T I O N S How much good can a moustache do? Kelsey Lindsey THE MOVEMBER AT NOVEMBER PROJECT gave bros an activist reason to grow their moustaches to the full and unrestricted beauty that the upper lip demands. According to the website (us.movember.com), facially-hirsute participants were asked to “use the power of the moustache to create conversations about men’s health and to raise funds for prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health.” Seeing as I’m devoting an entire column to the cause, I would say that (at least in this capacity), the Movember Project was a success — at least for those who were lucky enough to encounter a mustachioed man with a cause last month. But what about those who hang with a cleanshaven crew? What shall we do about those who have yet to learn the important nuances of prostate and testicular cancer? (I realize completely I skipped mental health, but given the breadth of that topic I’m going to devote a whole column to that cause in the near future. Promise.) Below is some important info to keep you up to date on some vital parts below the belt. So prostate. Explain. Just like testicles, the prostate is a male-specific gland located below the urinary bladder and in front of the rectum that “protects and nourishes sperm cells in semen, making it more liquid.” That’s via the American Cancer Society. Several types of cells are found in the prostate, but almost all prostate cancers develop from the gland cells.
Most often, prostate cancer occurs in men over the age of 50. And testes. Pretty sure I’m aware, but just in case … Testicles are two organs contained within the scrotum, which hang beneath the base of the penis. Testes produce male hormones and sperm, and are made up of several types of cells, including germ cells, where 90 percent of testicular cancers develop. Tumors can also develop in the stroma of the testicles — the hormone-producing and supportive tissues. And although they are not technically classified as testicular cancers, tumors can start in another organ and spread to the testicles. So I should probably get tested, yeah? Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in American men. Although serious, most men diagnosed with prostate cancer survive. Most prostate cancer can be found in its early stages with a PSA (prostate-specific antigen) blood test. “Most testicular cancers occur in men between the ages of 20 and 34,” reads the American Cancer Society’s webpage. Most cancers start with an often-painless lump on a testicle, swelling, or a “heaviness or achiness in the lower abdomen.” Men over the age of 50 should get a regular prostate cancer screening test every year, but if you notice any lumps or swelling in your testicles, schedule up with a doc right away. W T F WI T H 3. 2 BEER? Isa Jones NEARLY EVERYONE IN THIS STATE — EVEN THOSE IN THE KNOW — has had that moment of stumbling upon a beloved beer, almost grabbing it, and then suddenly remembering that because you’re in a grocery store, it’s only 3.2 percent alcohol per volume, or “3.2 beer.” (If you’re new to Colorado, you read that right. The beer in most grocery stores is capped at 3.2.) The frustrating question remains: Why?! The answer comes down to Prohibition, or rather the repeal of it. Back in 1933, (September 26, to be exact), alcohol came back to Colorado. However, just two years later, the Colorado Liquor Code of 1935 ruined that booze-soaked dream. The
code dictated that liquor stores couldn’t sell food and grocery stores couldn’t sell alcohol. Except, and that’s a big and annoying exception, “nonintoxicating” 3.2 beer. In addition, two amazing provisions: 18 year olds (who still couldn’t buy fullstrength alcohol) would now be allowed to purchase 3.2 beer, and on Sunday (usually a dry day of the week) 3.2 beer was a go. Colorado prided itself on the fact that it just created a law that would protect the “health, peace, and morals” of its citizens while still letting the (watery) brew flow. Yeah. It didn’t make a ton of sense then and it definitely doesn’t make any today. In 1987, the drinking age rose to 21 to correspond to federal drunk
driving laws, and in 2008 it became ok to sell hard liquor on the Sabbath … but! ... there is still 3.2 beer sold in the grocery stores. Turns out, it has nothing to do with drinking, but involves another law that makes little sense in a city like Denver — retail liquor licenses. In Colorado, a retail liquor license is restricted to one location per company in the state. Word on the street is that the idea is anti-compete, so independent liquor stores are able to stay in business. That’s why there’s only one Trader Joe’s with a liquor store, and why you can buy wine at the Super Target in Cherry Creek but not at any Safeway you want. Our advice? Roll your eyes at the law, warn new-comers to the state, and shop at your local liquor store.

Dear Shanna, So I keep hearing about lesbian bed death. As someone newly out and on the prowl, is this a real issue I need to be concerned with, or is it a lesbian urban legend? Does it only impact dykes, or what gives? — Looking for Lesbian Bed Life, Littleton.
voila — relationship bed death. It’s not just for lesbians anymore! Solutions? Have a conversation or two with your partner. Be nice, but explain that you’d like to spice things up a bit. Maybe buy some porn or erotica you think you both would like, and spend some time getting turned on by that. Discuss trying that ONE thing that you both wanted to try, but never quite got around to. Schedule time to be sexual! People are afraid of this, but if your schedules are both too packed, scheduling some alone time together (with flexibility as to what occurs during that time) might be the only way to re-boot the sexual hard drive. If it bothers you, talk about it, rather than getting passive aggressive or giving up. The likelihood is that your partner feels the same way, and is just looking for a way to bring it up. Best of luck!
