We are the Queerdos, Mister.

From the iconic title of this column to the horror and camp references that can be found on Dragula and even RuPaul, there is one undeniable truth in the queer community: Queers mesh well with weirdos, and vice versa.

It’s pretty simple psychology. Since the beginning of time, and frankly, still right now, the queer community has been demonized, literally. We’ve been called demonic and satanic— See the recent priDEMONth phenomenon, a true Christian fear turned queer meme. So, why wouldn’t we accept and even embrace what makes us weird or unusual?

And embrace we have, from alternative hair and makeup styles to gender-bending to tattoos and piercings to underground music. We keep salons and thrift shops in business, consider tattoos and concerts self-care, and contribute greatly to the funding of underground music and cinema. And we’re queering every single one of those areas.

So, this month, we celebrate the queerdos. From the weird EDM stylings of Wreckno to horror-themed stores and sewntogether stuffed animals, these pages highlight all things queer and weird. Read on for the best queerdo recommendations and some of the most compelling stories.

SCOTUS Limits EPA Protections of Wetlands

Late in May, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled in favor of an Idaho couple looking to build on their property. Initially, the couple, Michael and Chantell Sackett, were denied a permit to build on a portion of their property that was deemed a protected wetland.

This marks the second time the court cut back on EPA protections after it imposed major constraints on the agency's authority to limit carbon emissions from power plants under the Clean Air Act last year. Wetlands that back up to large bodies of water, like the one on the Sackett’s property, were previously protected by the Clean Water Act. The Clean Water Act allows the government to regulate "waters of the United States." But which wetlands qualify as "waters of the United States" has been subject to some debate and past court cases.

While this is a win for private property defenders, the repealing of these protections opens up the floodgates (literally and figuratively) to companies and land developers who wish to build on protected wetlands. Wetlands are swamps, marshes, or any other water-saturated land and are an integral part of our ecosystem. Beyond being home to some of the most biodiverse populations in the country, wetlands serve as a natural flood deterrent.

As global warming and human-influenced climate change continue to be a rising concern for shoreside communities, wetlands provide a natural defense to storm surges and increased rainfall. Wetlands are home to over 40 percent of the world’s species including various freshwater fish and waterfowl. Wetlands naturally store and slowly release large intakes of water, making them a crucial part of preserving surrounding areas from flooding.

With warmer climates come more moisture and more rain. Increased storm surges and flooding events can be tied back to anthropogenic climate change and are expected to continue to increase with rising sea levels. Many of the country's largest cities are built on shorelines or close to large bodies of water. When city planning, this makes sense for easy access to trade routes and water sources. Additionally, many of these large bodies of water have natural surrounding wetlands, like the large, swampy areas of New Jersey that surround New York City. Should land developers decide to begin building on these wetlands, New York City could see worse flooding than it already is.

In the ruling, Supreme Court Justices determined that the Clean Water Act did not apply to wetlands that do not have a "continuous surface connection" to bigger, regulated bodies of water. This ruling would cut out about half of the country’s wetlands from EPA protections, according to Energy and Environment reporter Coral Davenport of the New York Times. The environmental law group Earthjustice warned that as many as "118 million acres" would be affected.

Just another case of the conservative-packed SCOTUS ruling against the interest of public health and safety in a long line of unpopular decisions. It’s safe to say that the damaging effects of these Supreme Court Justices, and the administrations that appointed them, will be felt for decades to come.

Horrid is Keeping South Denver Weird

Starting a brick-and-mortar shop post-pandemic, and one specifically that specializes in all things horror, is a bold move, but definitely one that shop founder Emerald Boes is up to.

“We wanted a place to essentially serve as the hub for all the different things, the market, the magazine, and the events, as well as the product,” she explains.

outfront magazine.com 9

For those not familiar, Horrid started as a photography magazine, Horrid Magazine, and a pop-up collaboration known as Horrid Spirits, spearheaded by Boes and local bone jewelry creator Kelsee Ross. This turned into vendor markets to give alternative creators a place to showcase their work, and then eventually a store. Boes runs the store and magazine with the creative design help of her brother, Jake. A lot to take on, but something Boes feels is a long time coming.

“Something that’s been really interesting about running this space is that horror and oddity collectors are often these old-school, white, male collectors. The alternative, queer community is now getting into that space, and it’s interesting to see the contrast,” Boessays.

“I identify as bisexual or pansexual; I don’t really have a preference. I just like people,” Boes elaborates. “It’s always been a huge thing within my family as well. Three out of four of my older siblings identify as queer, so it’s just always been in my life. I’ve always surrounded myself with the queerdos, if you will. Something I’ve really noticed with opening up the shop is that people who identify as queer really do love and understand the alternative community because there’s no judgment; it’s OK to be weird. I think the alternative community really embraces that. I think it’s a safe, comfortable place to explore different types of identity and interest.”

Horrid don’t just talk the talk, though—They also put in the work to make sure they’re transforming the alternative space that embraces the weird and the witchy, the horrid and macabre, into a place of equity and acceptance. From making sure they are keeping Indigenous takes on medicine and magick in mind when they sell products, to electing gender-neutral couples prom king and queen at their Dance Macabre, they practice equity and queerness in what they do.

“It feels like so often, these spaces can be white-dominated, and not necessarily look ing at how indigenous people would treat the plant. We have full moon rituals, and we do workshops, and whenever we do things

10 OFM JULY 2023

like that, we are always trying to do research on how to educate people and the best way to honor practices.”

In addition to the metaphysical side of the shop and the markets and magazine the space is still involved with, the store also specializes in cute horror merch, and it houses local nail tech Yuri Serrato-Canno. The store also has a space that can be rented for photo shoots and private events, and has plans for offering on-site coffee and some other great collaborations.

“I love bringing people in and making it deliberate that I’m reaching out to people from across different communities and practices to help educate. Everyone’s welcome, and to me, that’s the most important thing.”

Keep up with Horrid at horridmagazine.com to find out about rituals, events, and other exciting developments.

Embrace Your Weirdness with Frankenbois

12
JULY 2023
OFM

Iqueer/allied vendor event where I fell in love and took home my very own Frankenboi. Meet Brie, the Frankenboi herself! She caught up with OFM to discuss her creepy but cute creations known as Frankenbois. This multi-talented artist creates Sid-fromToy Story-esque stuffed animals, allowing customers to heal their inner child one boi at a time.

What is a Frankenboi?

I feel like your guess is as good as mine; it's all over the board. I get called Sid from Toy Story a lot. So if you want to envision something he would make, it’s kinda like a bunch of mashed together stuffed animals. But recently, I've been starting to use plastic toys, which are very much more Toy Story-esque. I just mix and match and sew everything together.

What inspired you to start creating Frankenbois?

I used to manage an urban outfitters at Park Meadows Mall. And I would bring in my cross stitching stuff, which you saw me break out at OFM’s PrePride event. I would just work on my cross stitch on my break at work. We had these lanyards with our names and little stuffed animals on them. So I started to switch the heads on all of those little tiny stuffed animals. Then we were all just walking around with little tiny Frankenboi lanyards. So I was like, “I’m gonna start doing this bigger,” and that’s kind of how it took off. Tell me about the different products you sell. Oh, man. No two are the same. So it's all over the place, but I feel like a classic is probably one of the two-headed ones. My classic go-to is, like, a two headed Ty baby with giant eyes on one bear body. So that and the keychains with little tiny baby heads on. I think those two are my staples. But it's all over the place.

outfront magazine.com 13

Do you dabble in costume Frankenbois?

It depends. I thrift everything, so if someone wants a seahorse and a panda head, those are two very specific creatures. I just tell them, “If I can find them, I will definitely keep you in mind.” But I also have done customs in the past where I have ordered stuffed animals online and then sewed them together for people. I also have done customs at events; I did the Meow Wolf Vortex Festival and made Frankenbois there just from a table full of pieces. So yes, and no.

Where will Frankenboi be popping up next to sell your creations?

I'll be at the Wonder Bus Festival in Columbus in August. So come see me in August, everybody!

14 OFM JULY 2023

How do you want your Frankenbois to make people feel?

There’s shock value for sure, but it's creepy enough that it's still cute. I just want to be happy and to connect with my work. I had this one Frankenboi, and it was a Louis Griffin Body and My Little Pony head. I literally had it for six months, and no one was buying it. That rarely happens because I either rip them apart or they sell. But something was telling me, “Don't take it apart.” Then I went to this event, and this guy was like, “Family Guy and My Little Pony are literally my two favorite things on the planet,” and he immediately bought it. I just knew it. I knew the perfect person would come and connect with it. I want someone to be like,”This is what I've been looking for my whole life.”

Where do you find all the stuffies?

I get a big portion of my stuffies from thrifting. But I get a lot of donations, too. I have a lot of friends with kids who don't want their kids to have a thousand stuffed animals, and I want them; so it's a win-win. I keep it as sustainable as I can because a lot of the time, these will wind up in the landfill, and I don't want that to happen.

Do you think creating weird art is a good outlet for expressing your inner weirdness?

It expresses something in me. I didn't know how much I needed to do this because I am super in touch with my inner child. It's definitely an amazing outlet, which is why I started doing workshops too, because I want other people to experience that joy of creating a toy that's just different, weird, and creepy. And I feel so lucky that I am able to make money off of something I'd be doing regardless if it was lucrative or not.

Why do you think it’s important to highlight the Queerdo community?

It’s important for queerdos/creatives to take up space. Being your authentic self is hard enough, and to be discriminated against for it makes it a thousand times harder. We need to not only protect the community but uplift them, and to share their stories and art.

I think it's so fucked for anyone to come for a group of people specifically for who they love and for how they live. My inner circle is in this community; a lot of my customer base is also in this community, and I work a lot of events in queer spaces. I can tell you the amount of love I've received from this community is by far more than I've received from any community!

Keep up with Brie at @briehirsh on Instagram; go take home a Frakenboi for yourself!

Breaking Binaries with Queerdo Royalty

Wreckno

20 OFM JULY 2023

Wreckno (he/they) is a genderfluid dancer, DJ, music producer, and rapper taking the industry by storm. They’re known for their iconic live performances, producing unapologetically loud and queer electronic bass music, creating a safe space for fellow queerdos, and throwing a whole lot of ass!

OFM sat down with Wreckno to discuss their artistry, get the scoop on their new song “Topsy Turvy” with Ru Paul’s Drag Race Queen Yvie Oddly, and talk about the importance of self-discovery and acceptance in one's gender identity journey.

For those who don’t know you, how would you describe your sound?

My sound as a musician is very queer, loud, electronic, and bassy!

What inspired you to become a music producer?

Initially I wanted to be a performer. I wanted to be a backup dancer for Lady Gaga. That was my first dream job. Eventually I started writing music with my brother. He was working in FL Studio when I was around 15-20 years old. It took me a little while, but eventually I started playing around with producing. It was really just me going to so many festivals and EDM shows, then also having my brother I looked up to a lot. It was really like a mixture of those two things that made me want to start.

What does being a ‘Queerdo’ mean to you?

It means everything to me. I came out when I was, like, 14, and I was a queerdo before I even understood that that's what I was. I feel like I've always been rebellious. And in my own mind, it's always been other people's problems that they have an issue with who I was. I experienced that coming from a small town. You know, in my teen years and to this day as a really loud person, you experience people not liking it. But it's really just part of our armor we wear to protect ourselves, and it's really allowed me to be who I am.

How was collaborating with Yvie Oddly for your song "Topsy Turvy?"

Oh my god. Literally the best! I remember watching Yvie’s season and just being like, “This bitch is crazy.” Like, I just thought she was so cool. And, I mean, when she saved the backbends until the end, I just remember being like, “Oh my God.” I had no words. I was just so in love with her whole vibe. Then she released music afterwards, and I just remember being like, “She can write; she can rap; she has such a cool outlook on music, and her perspective and drag.” It's so, like, against the grain of what we had seen on Drag Race, so I always resonated with her.

Shout out to Yvie’s partner, Doug, because he showed her my music. At one point, Doug was like, “Why haven't you worked with Wreckno?” And we followed each other. Whenever one of the queens I've watched on TV or looked up to follows (me), I'm like, “That is literally insane to me; they're real Life Superheroes to me.” So working with her and having her extending the opportunity was really great. I had just been sitting on the song, the original beat, for a

year. And I wanted it to be something special when it did happen. And I wanted it to be something special when it did happen. Yvie came in and then just wrote her rap. It was just like one of the most effortless, coolest things I’ve had the pleasure of doing, honestly.

I saw Grindr had you curate a ‘new music friday playlist on spotify, what bop would you add to that playlist for summer?

For this summer, I would say I think I put “Playboy / Positions” by ShyGirl on there. I've been opening my sets with that, and it is like, whoa; it gets the party started.

Will you give us some insight on how it’s been for you exploring your gender fluidity?

It has been crazy. It's really only been almost a year and a half. But then I also have to preface that when I was in high school, I was always a rebellious weirdo. There's pictures of me where I cut a disco ball in half and had them as boobs. There's so many pictures of me doing weird kind of clownish makeup and just experimenting. But I also lived in a really small town, and I didn't have the verbiage of even knowing what gender fluidity was when I was in high school.

Then via music and my desire to perform, I slowly was like, “How would it feel if I wore a skirt on stage? How I would feel if I presented myself differently?” I remember December of 2021, I finally wore a skirt on stage, and I've just never felt so empowered as a performer, as a person.

In my regular, everyday life, I'm very comfortable. I wear sweats and sweatshirts all the time. But when I go out there and do my passion, which is performing music, it's like, I've always been enamored with people to get to that next level. They become this extended, turned up to 11 versions of themselves. And I feel like my gender fluidity has really allowed that for me both in and out of music. It's really just a blessing, and everyone's been

22 OFM JULY 2023

very receptive to it. It's really changed my life to be comfortable as an adult finally be like, “Oh, you're allowed to play dress-up.”

What's currently your biggest aspiration and something you're proud of accomplishing thus far in your career?

I can't think of a specific goal. It's really just internally these little victories as a musician and writer who's always learning. I just want to keep surprising myself and somehow one-upping myself without it turning into this crazy internal competition. I'm always trying to give myself the space to grow, but you know, even talking about working on a song with Yvie, you're like, “Well… what happens next?” (Laughs).

Something I'm proud of is the strides I’ve made when it comes to my live shows. I was initially just DJing, and now we'll have two dancers on stage whenever we can. I’m still playing DJ

clubs, but when we’re doing choreo and I'm laughing, and I'm really giving the full sensation of why I wanted to be a performer and musician on stage, (that) is what I'm most proud of.

Do you have any aspiring words of encouragement for queer artists trying to make their way in the industry?

I would say always be open to advice, but remember, one person's way of making music or getting from A to B Isn't everybody’s. Everyone's journey is different. Don't let the internet or how someone else views how music should be done deter you, whether that be writing, producing, sound design, any of that. I think that was something that really halted me. I was more scared to learn because I felt like I was doing everything wrong. So just allow yourself to suck and figure it out before you're like, “Oh, I'm terrible.”

Do you have any projects in the works you’d like to share?

I just signed a record deal for the first time, and I'm working on a very special, solo EP which I’m extremely excited about!

Who are some other drag queens you’d be interested in collaborating with?

Kylie Sonique Love—We are in contact, and I adore everything about her. There’s a video of her flipping on stage with Miley Cyrus in this, like, "American Woman" bra, so definitely her. I also really love Trixie Mattel. I just had the honor of hanging out with her when I was in Australia, and she's just, like, a class act. Oh, and Aja; Aja is like a ballroom drag queen. She’s a trans woman and iconic dancer who also raps.

Stay-up-to-date with Wreckno on Instagram @Wreckno, and do yourself a favor and go watch their new music video for "Topsy Turvy" with Yvie Oddly on YouTube!

Queerdo Gift Guide

Weird Gifts for the Queerdo in All of Us

This time of year, it’s hard to pick a theme when gifting occasions arise. It’s not really near many big holidays. Pride just passed, and we’re having a hard time getting into the Fourth of July spirit. Here are some quirky queerdo gifts that might be a little random, but they’re perfect all year round.

O.pen Vape Cartridges

O.pen is the OG creator of the 510 battery, claiming their title as pioneers of pens and carts! O.pens Lemon Orange Hybrid strain collaboration with strain hunters and Green House Seed co. is the perfect mid-day sweet treat.

Alchemy Naturals-Relief Gummies

These wellness-focused gummies are complete with CBD to promote relaxation, CBG to reduce pain, and ginger extract to reduce inflammation. Great for those feeling sore from running around all day, these gummies are the perfect gift for the consumer who doesn’t stop.

G Pen-Elite II

In celebration of the iconic G Pen’s 10th anniversary, they rolled out their sleekest pen yet, the G Pen Elite II. It’s portable, heats quickly, does a great job on the go, and it’s super lightweight and easy to clean. Powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery with USB-C fast-charging, the Elite II can be fully charged in 1.5 hours and run for an hour of vaporization time, making it the perfect pen for when you want to vape instead of smoke on the go.

CTOAN Body Positive Pride Candles

Pride may be over, but it’s never out of season to adorn your home with rainbows or baby pink and blue. CTOAN, a candle company run by activist Jodyann, makes gorgeous, curvy-body-celebrating candles paired with some amazing scents and colors. Even better, money from the candles gets donated to queer nonprofits.

The Clear Flavored Vape-Elite Lime Sorbet

For the vape enthusiast, this pen is a must. After getting my sample pen for review, I went out and bought several more. The unique shape makes it easy to hit without any clogging issues, and the flavor and high are 10 out of 10. It’s super easy to hit this pen without pressing any buttons or turning it off and on again, so if you’re puffing (safely and responsibly) on the go, this is the pen for you. Our favorites are the key lime and grape.

Hemper’s Blue Whale Box

If you’re not already hip to Hemper Boxes, get familiar. Their summer box is an adorable assortment of whale pipes that make you want to hit the beach. This awesome subscription company also hooked us up with our tea pot bong for the High Tea issue and a wreath bong for the holidays, so you know they have a trackable aesthetic. Their boxes are an awesome form of self-care or a way to say thank you to a stoney friend.

DNA Vibe - JAZZ Band

Promoting relief and recovery is what this Jazz Band does and does well. I often have a tight neck or back, and I use this band especially to help with that. Most results are seen by using the band one or two times a day. They pride themselves on having our back, (and neck, knees, elbows), and they really do. I’m always looking for a better way to relieve pain in my lower back or my neck, and I’m already loving this amazing band! The side with the illuminating red light faces the trouble area and automatically turns on and will run for an hour. The band enhances blood flow and oxygenation, relieves aches and pains, and enhances cellular energy and vitality.
