culture “I think Brecht says you should feel in the theatre, especially righteous anger at class injustice and the Marxist ideals he focused on.” “By becoming disillusioned, to not care, to say ‘What’s the point?’ we let politicians oppress and do whatever they want. What can we do? Don’t give up. I think that’s what my play gets to in the end. Life is insane, but that’s no reason to stop fighting.” Black Swan State Theatre Company are about to begin their 2017 season with a work from one of Australia’s most brilliant and recognisable playwrights. You may know Michael Gow from studying his celebrated work ‘Away’ during your time at high school, but the award winning artist is much more than an entry in the curriculum. Gow will be in Perth to oversee the production of his very personal work ‘Once In Royal David’s City’ in collaboration with the Queensland Theatre Company under the direction of Sam Strong. Speaking with OUTinPerth, Gow says he is happy to be back in Perth once again - long after his very first premiere of ‘The Kid’ here in Fremantle back in 1982 ‘Once In Royal David’s City’ is Gow’s most recent work from 2014 tells the somewhat allegorical story of a Brechtobsessed director who returns to Bondi Beach to spend time
with his mother in her twilight days. The epic work explores life, love, loss, anger, art, theatre and politics - and much, much more. Gow explains that a free-ranging format is necessary to deal with all of these intersecting motifs. “Since the whole show is narrated, I try to use the narrator as somebody who takes us to these really dark places but at times is able to admit that some of the things that are happening are stupid or mad or meaningless so that you can pull back from the darkness.” Though the themes of the piece are wide-ranging, the political element of the work seems to be most pertinent in this age of Trump, One Nation and voter disillusionment. “When I was with the Queensland Theatre Company and we did one of [Bertolt] Brecht’s plays and one of the kids asked why the piece was so exciting and moving when you weren’t supposed to feel anything.”
After Labor leader Mark McGowan was criticised for “reading from a script” on 7.30 with Leigh Sales, Gow says politicians could look to the arts for a new script, instead of toeing the line. “They need courage. My favourite metaphor is that they’re all playing to the gallery, saying what they think people want to hear but I expect that gallery is almost empty.” What really shits me is when someone gets up in parliament and says ‘Oh no, they’re trying to ignite class war again!’ Damn right they are! What we need is a bit more class war.” Once In Royal David’s City will be at the Heath Ledger Theatre from Saturday March 25th - Sunday April 9th. Based on the cult film of the same name, WAAPA bring the story of the original mean girls to the stage in ‘Heathers: The Musical’.
The rest of the world got to have a taste of the talents of our very own Feminem The-Future when she took to the stage with Adele at her Perth concert in February.
Misfit Veronica Sawyer, originally portrayed by Winona Ryder, starts her new life at Westerberg High where she meets the notorious queen bees of the school - The Heathers.
Dressed as Adele, Fem was invited on stage for a chat, a selfie and to sing a few bars of her hit song Rumour Has It and the crowd went wild sparking a viral sensation that reached the UK, the USA and around the globe.
When Veronica falls in love with the mysterious JD, she is exiled from the Heathers after having just joined their ranks. She seeks revenge - but her new beau takes it a little further than Veronica had originally planned...
If you weren’t already aware of the local talent, Fem can be found performing regularly at The Court and Connections, whether she’s singing, lip-synching, hosting or DJing the house down.
Created by Kevin Murphy (Desperate Housewives), Laurence O’Keefe (Legally Blonde) and Andy Fickman (She’s The Man), WAAPA’s musical theatre students couldn’t wait to get their hands on this camp musical extravaganza.
See Feminem as Adele at her all new show HELLO at Connections Nightclub on Friday April 7th. For tickets and more information, head to facebook.com/djfeminem

Rainbow Connections
MICHAEL GOW PG3
There seems to be a war on rainbows, with the LGBTI community’s symbol of inclusion and diversity being challenged and deemed an offensive by our most vocal opponents. The Australian Christian Lobby complained about the ACT government flying the flag on government land. Managing Director Lyle Shelton said the rainbow had become a political symbol for a range of issues ranging from surrogacy, adoption rights, marriage equality, free speech and perceived opposition to freedom of religion. OUTinPerth revealed that One Nation candidate Michelle Meyers is under the impression that the reason so many people support marriage equality, including the majority of people of faith, is because we possess a covert Nazi or Soviet styled mind control program. It’s the biggest story we’ve ever published, it was re-published by everyone from ‘Cosmopolitan’ to ‘The Sydney Morning Herald.’ The Prime Minister was asked about it in question time, and people are still sending tweets about it Scandinavia. We also revealed that Meyers feels sad when she sees a rainbow pattern. She said the rainbow has become an emblem for a “sexually corrupt and morally bankrupt society”. “The rainbow has been raped and sullied. its colors [sic] have been purloined and paraded as a trophy of the culture war being waged worldwide. But its fruits are bitter, it’s victory hollow and it’s legacy toxic.” Meyers said. In response the world filled the candidates social media pages with rainbow emojis. Senator Eric Abetz piped up in Senate Estimates to demand the department of Finance explain why it once had a rainbow flag in it’s foyer. The Tasmanian senator demanded to know if the department would be giving equal exposure to the iceberg loving, rainbow noose group - The Marriage Alliance.
Things got even more bizarre when Abetz added some humour to proceedings by announcing the rainbow flag being the symbol of a hostile nation at war with Australia. Apparently some activists declared an island an independent gay nation over a decade ago and there’s never been a cease-fire. Miranda Devine published a column arguing that the Army should not be participating in the Mardi Gras parade because it was a politically charged event. Devine took offence at the army for issuing a lapel pin that featured a rainbow. The baton was then passed back to Lyle Shelton who made an appearance on the Karvelas program on SKY News to continued to argue that the army should be avoiding association with rainbows, as it’s a symbol for so many contentious issues.
JONATHAN DUFFY PG9
Here’s what I know. Rainbows are symbol of existence, belonging and inclusion. It’s a motif for community, being engaged, respect and not being judgemental. So wear a rainbow, fly a flag, put a pink triangle on your sleeve, wear a coloured handkerchief in your back pocket, put a green carnation in your lapel, pierce your right ear and gather all your friends of Dorothy and be loud and proud. A rainbow is not a symbol encapsulating every political belief of every LGBT person holds, no more than the a cross is a symbol of every misdeed committed by a believer.

From March 31 to April 9 is National Youth Week in Australia, a time to celebrate our nation’s young people and consider what issues they face and how to improve their future - and in turn, the future of Australia.
To mark National Youth Week we asked two LGBTIQ+ youths - Kai Schweizer, a young trans man and Tasha Jones, who identifies as non-binary - to share their experiences as young queer Australians.
LGBTIQ+ youth in Australia are confronted with many challenges, encountering much higher rates of bullying, discrimination, unemployment, mental health issues and suicide. One way we as a community can tackle this concerns is to communicate, tell our stories and be visible - where it is safe to do so.
For more information on National Youth Week in WA (Mar 31 - Apr 9), head to www.DLGC.wa.gov.au
In my first grade class, my teacher asks us what we want to be when we grow up. I say ‘A BOY!’ and everybody laughs. I don’t say those words again for a decade. Growing up, I never hear the word transgender, only tomboy. With my ripped jeans and flat chest, I wear ‘tomboy’ like a uniform that never quite fits. The first time I notice my chest begin to bud, I cry myself to sleep. I am certain I am the only person who has ever felt this way. I find out who I am from the internet. Sitting in the back corner of my all-girls school, hunched over my laptop, an ‘FTM Transition Timeline’ appears in my Youtube feed and for the first time in my life I’m not alone. Within weeks, I’m living a double life. My weekends are spent with hair hidden under a beanie and ace bandages strapped around my chest. On Monday morning, I return to white blouse and tartan skirt, unsure who to turn to. Each week, it gets harder and harder to live a lie. By the time I graduate, I am so mentally ill I can barely function. It took me four years to come out of the closet. Since then, the world has changed for queer youth. It has never been easier to access support, information and education about being LGBTQ. A quick google search will find a variety of support groups in your area. LGBTQ-specific hotlines like Qlife have come into existence. And with a bit of searching, you can find queer sex ed, no matter who you are or who you love. Even those who are scared and in the closet can live authentic lives online, with social media profiles that reflect their identity or virtual groups that can offer support and advice. Twitter has had more trans-positive hashtags than I can count. Even Facebook has 58 gender options now. They say that hindsight is 20/20, but even looking back, I know I would never have discovered who I am without the internet. The first fifteen years of my life, I’d never seen a single person like me on TV or learned about us at school. For most of us, the internet provides the answers that others are too embarrassed to give or that we are too terrified to ask for. Outside of the safe bubble of virtual reality, life is a different story. Each time I enter a restroom, I prepare myself for the possibility of violence. I avoid using public bathrooms whenever possible and instead wait until I reach the sanctuary of my house. The first time I went to the emergency room, they made me pee a cup. The contents were mostly blood, and it took two courses of antibiotics to cure the bladder infection. This was the first of many. I watch my peers lose their families and friends, their jobs and their homes. I see them spiral into loneliness and mental illness. I notice the people like me curled up in city streets because shelters won’t take them. I see the eulogies of friends and acquaintances appear on Facebook in a steady stream. I read about another transwoman murdered, another law passed to make our lives harder.
And yet, I watch the youth of today fighting for a better future. In spite of all the adversity that we face, we have not and will not give up. There has never been a more accepting and open-minded generation. Change doesn’t happen overnight, but I am confident that when we grow old and are replaced by a new youth, they will grow up in safer and better world because of us; a world where we are all free to pee in peace. Kai Schweizer
Society has made two boxes, one for the boys and one for the girls. The boys get cars to play with and shorts to wear, while the girls get dolls to play with and dresses to wear. The sex we are born is the box we have to been in, we weren’t allowed to leave and we aren’t allowed go into the other box. Not everyone agreed with this, some left and never came back. I was uncomfortable and miserable in my assigned box. I always looked over to the other box, wondering what it would be like to be born in that box, how much life would be different for me. One day I couldn’t take playing with the toys I was meant to play with and wearing the clothes I had to, so I walked out of my assigned box and left everything I was moulded to be behind. When I walked out of that box I saw that there were more than just two. There were a variety of different ones, not just “pink” and “blue”. I walked over to each box and met many extraordinary people; they all talked about how they had left their assigned boxes. They all describe how I was feeling, they knew what it was like to struggle to fit into that perfect shaped mould society had made for everyone. After going to each box, I finally found a box that I fit into, I found a way to mould myself into the person I wanted to be, not what others wanted me or anyone else to be. People do stay in a box, some people go and find another box where they will be more comfortable but that’s what it’s all about, finding out what box you belong to. I’m glad I didn’t stay in my assigned box otherwise I wouldn’t know who I am. Tasha Jones

Jackie, Janet, Lydia, Andrea, Gina and Chyka may have paved the way in Australia, but Sydney are joining the Real Housewives family with an all new series of glamour, lunches, champagne and, of course, drama. AthenaX Levendi is an artist, jeweller and self-described spiritualist and part of the seven-woman cast of The Real Housewives of Sydney, which also features pop star and actor Melissa Tkautz, One Nation wife Lisa Oldfield - among other unforgettable personalities. We caught up with AthenaX ahead of the February season premiere to find out what to expect from the ladies of Double Bay. You’ve been described as the ‘free spirit’ of the season, how do you mesh with the girls who are less so? “I walked into the show very open minded and I really did try hard. I was a bit relentless in the beginning trying to make them see that I was coming from a place of love and openness but you can’t convince someone of an opinion different to one they’ve already decided on. I feel that they were perhaps a little intimidated so they chose to be very closed off and judgemental towards me. I thought it was awful that they would make fun of my Greek ethnicity and my spiritual beliefs.”
Does that mean you clashed with Lisa Oldfield, being the wife of One Nation founder David Oldfield? “Lisa is one of the loveliest people I’ve ever met. She’s completely open minded and probably the only other free spirit in that group… and then there’s Matty, who chooses to play in both parks.” Did you know any of the other Housewives before you started filming? “I knew Melissa Tkautz because we’ve been going to the same hair salon for the last decade but we never really had coffees and catch-ups. Matty and I have a lot of common friends and I went to her 40th but that’s about it.” “I forgot I’d even met Krissy Marsh until I saw her on set. She’s changed a lot in the last few years. She loves to be the centre of attention, talk about her breasts and flaunt her sexual needs. That’s something she really plays up on the show. Lisa really enjoyed that, she had a field day. It made it very easy to hold her accountable.” What is it that made you decide to join the cast, not having watched Real Housewives of Melbourne?
Do we get to meet your family on the show? “Absolutely! My three kids and my husband are a really nice group of people. Panos has chosen to call me his life partner and my kids had the choice when coming into this life of calling me their mum. I’ve always taught my kids to be free about everything in life, I’m not a tiger mum. I don’t brainwash my kids with my ideologies.” The last three seasons of Real Housewives of Melbourne have been dramatic to say the least - can we expect the same? “There’s a blow up for real! THey were very intense. When I look back I can’t even understand how a lot of the things happened but sometimes there was a lot of pressure behind the scenes and a lot of us were hangry. Combined with a tight dress and really painful shoes. You sit there for five hours and see how far you get!” Real Housewives of Sydney airs Sundays at 5:30pm on Arena. Leigh Hill
Insanity. (laughs) I’ve always been a larger than life character. I love dressing up and drama and the whole theatre of being in front of the camera and now I have the perfect excuse to amp all of this up! Also my family and I had just relocated our business, Levendi Jewellers, to Sydney.”

Back in 2011 Jonathan Duffy caught Australia’s attention when he appeared in his autobiographical documentary The Doctor’s Wife. The culture clash film follows Duffy and his doctor boyfriend as they move from Brisbane to Mundubdera in rural Queensland. The comedian also came to Perth for Fringe World, getting rave reviews for his show ‘Without Me I’m Nothing’. Today Duffy is leading a very different life. All the way on the other side of the world. Jonathan Duffy spoke to us about his newfound career success and happiness. Most people would remember from the documentary ‘The Doctor’s Wife’ and your Fringe World show ‘Without Me I’m Nothing’. But now you’re living and working in Iceland. How did you end up there? Vincent, the Doctor to my Doctor’s Wife, and I broke up. I wasn’t really sure what to do next but I knew I wanted to get away for a bit. I wanted to start over in my 30’s somewhere nobody knew me. You see being in the relationship I had been in, and the film and the shows, people sort of only knew me as one half of a couple. I didn’t really know how to start over in a place where people kept reminding me of the relationship so I decided to go far away and challenge myself. I chose Iceland as a place to start. If it worked I would stay, if it didn’t I would go somewhere else. It’s been nearly two years now. Had you been to Iceland before you moved there? I came here for a week in 2011. I really liked it. Apart from Mundubbera it was the first time I had been somewhere alien to me that instantly felt like home. When I first arrived as a new settler it was a similar feeling. How Icelandic are you now, can you make a good Plokkfiskur? I feel like that’s not a question I can answer, but my friend Hugleikur is sitting next to me and he says I’m Icelandic enough. I do feel like this is my home now. I know how things work (well except the tax system here, that’s insane) and it’s where I plan to be for a while. I don’t cook anything Icelandic though, the food can be terrible. I won’t ever lose the craving for a sausage sizzle from Bunnings on a Saturday. I’ve been reading your comic strip ‘Bruce the Angry Bear’, how did that come about? It actually started when I was promoting ‘The Doctor’s Wife’. My film was always on before Bear City in the festivals. There were two versions of my film, a longer and a shorter version.
Sometimes they would advertise the shorter film and then screen the longer version of my film. As a result the former twinkly version of myself would meet really angry bears outside the cinema because they were waiting for their film to start late.
last August I made fun of her during a big gay show for pride. I wore the swan dress and sang ‘It’s Oh So Quiet’ and then was informed by a drag queen that she was in the audience. I have no idea what she thought of it but I have avoided her since.
I started creating this characterised version of them in my mind. I remember saying to my (now ex) husband, “Wouldn’t it be funny to create a cartoon character that’s a bear and he’s angry and when he gets pissed off he throws twinks at people.”
Was that last question the equivalent of asking an Australian if they know Kylie Minogue?
He sat in the back of my mind for years until I talked about him with my friend Hugleikur Daggson. Hugleikur (or Hulli) is a famous Icelandic cartoonist and when I mentioned it to him, he said, “This is hilarious, you have to make this happen.” Later I met an Illustrator who drew a cartoon version of me when I spoke at TedXreykjavik. His name is Einar Masson and I fell in love with his style. I had a chat with him and we decided to give it a go. We wrote 5 short strips and then pitched them to the website Gayiceland.is . They loved it and that’s how it all came about. It’s been so rewarding to see an idea I had almost 7 years ago come to fruition, but that’s sort of been my whole experience in Iceland. It’s a country where if you really want to make something happen and are willing to work for it, it will. You said in an interview recently that your experienced a lot of homophobia growing up in Australia, describing Australia as a homophobic country. Do you think we’re still a homophobic country? It’s difficult to answer that question. I still believe that a country which still discriminates against sexually and gender diverse people on a federal level is homophobic. However the only experience I’ve personally had of Australia since I left is when I went back in December for Christmas and to do some shows. I can say that it was the first time in nearly two years I had that familiar ‘checking myself’ in certain situations because I didn’t feel that safe. It’s a feeling I have never experienced in nearly two years. When Icelanders ask about how amazing Australia is, I sometimes have to be the guy who informs them that it’s not the utopia they think it is. They always ask why and then when I tell them about the homophobia, lack or marriage equality and the way we treat asylum seekers they’re always shocked. When I was in Reykjavik, my boyfriend and I spent the whole time suggesting which house belonged to Bjork. Have you seen Bjork? It used to be black but was recently painted. I sort of met her a few times. Once I held a door open for her. Then
Not really because everyone here has a Bjork story. They’ve all met her. Celebrity isn’t really a thing here. I mean technically I am one which I think is ridiculous. I get recognised a lot, even when buying toilet paper but in Iceland it’s more just someone telling you that they liked what you did than asking for an autograph. It’s not at all like asking if someone has met Kylie. What do Icelandic people assume about Australians? They think we’re all laid back, that we love ‘Neighbours’and that we’re tanned, love surfing and throw shrimp on the barbie. To which I always say, they’re fucking called prawns. Thanks Paul Hogan. Thanks so much for everything I’m asked every day. Beer was illegal in Iceland until the late ‘80s, what other odd things have you discovered about your adopted home? The strange traditions. Eating sheep head, rotten shark that has been pissed on. Just their food in general. Icelanders never go out before midnight. They drink at home and you’re lucky if they’re out at a club before 1am. When they party, they do it till they’re unconscious and then they go to an afterparty. They’re always late to EVERYTHING (iceland time). They even have a word for when two people have slept with the same person - Kviðmágur. It means belly brother in law. Tell me about your podcast ‘Icetralia’. It’s the best podcast on the internet. Basically it’s me and a straight Icelandic comedian shooting the shit. Each episode we have regular segments. ‘The Embarrassment of the Week’, where we both share something embarrassing. ‘How to Speak Icetralian’, where we teach each other something in our language. ‘Gay it to me straight’, where we are allowed to ask anything of each other sexuality related and the ‘Aunts of Agony’, where we give advice. It’s one of my favourite things I’ve ever done. It’s uninhibited and has become one of the most listened to podcasts in Iceland. From now on, every second one is live so that adds another element of awesomeness. It’s on iTunes. If you haven’t subscribed, you should. Graeme Watson

The Pride committee has seven new members. Joining the committee are Jeremy Wray, Tania Giorgetta, Fiona Maguire, Rosco Holyoake, Francis Burgess, Michael Dellamaddalena, Curtis Ward, and John Hugo. They join existing menmbers Andrew Barker and Karron Swinn. Perth households have been inundated with flyers from lobby groups opposed to WA Labor’s plan to continue the Safe Schools Coalition program.
“All Kids Matter have had a huge amount of feedback with the strongest element being concern from parents who didn’t even know the program existed.
The Greens are also supportive of the educational program that aims to stop LGBTI teens from being bullied, but the Liberal party has vowed to remove the program from schools.
“With the Government and Opposition divided over funding for this controversial program – it is not only appropriate, but in our opinion it is critical that all members of the electorate, whether parents or grandparents, etc are aware and give careful consideration to these issues before they vote.”
At least three different flyers were distributed in the lead up top the state election. One publication was from the Australian Christian Lobby. A second flyer which was distributed to tens of thousands of homes came from a group called All Kids Matter. Their flyer claimed the program encourages girls and boys to use each other’s bathrooms and changerooms, and that the program was delivered to four year old children. Last year the content of the program was altered following a review ordered by the federal government. One of the recommendations implemented from UWA Professor Bill Louden’s review is that the program is restricted to high schools. James Massey, a 24 year-old gay man who lives in the Riverton electorate received one of the flyers. Massey, who has actively campaigned for the program to be supported, said the distribution of the flyers looked like a desperate attempt to spread misinformation about the program. “I worry that there are people who will read this and believe it. There are people who cruise by and see something written and think, ‘Well, that must be right.’” Massey said. The website for All Kids Matter is registered to James Parker, who confirmed to OUTinPerth that tens of thousands of the flyers were being distributed to Perth households. Parker is a Christian who shares his story of leaving homosexuality and finding happiness in a heterosexual marriage, Last year he toured around Perth delivering a series of public lectures with Liberal MP Peter Abetz arguing against marriage equality. “Tens of thousands of flyers have been distributed across Perth ahead of the WA state election. The Safe Schools program continues to be a Trojan horse that advocates an antibullying message but drives a real program of gender theory indoctrination,” Parker said. Parker said the campaign had been successful in raising the issue with many people who were previously unaware of the program.

Parker did not respond to OUTinPerth’s questions about the information in the flyer allegedly being inaccurate. A third ‘Safety Warning’ flyer said school children were in danger from the program. Using almost identical phrases to the All Kids Matter flyer, it also claimed the program was taught to four years olds. The safety flyer was authorised by Rosemary Lorrimar, the National President of the Democratic Labour Party. The party is only registered in Victoria, after being de-registered by the Australian Electoral Commission in 2015. Speaking to OUTinPerth Lorrimar said people were naive if they thought the program would not be rolled out to younger children. Lorrimar said she believed that sex education had no place in schools and it was the role of parents and health professionals, adding that most teenagers have periods of feeling ambivalent about their sexuality but for most it is only a phase. The activist said the Safe Schools program was not an anti-bullying program; “It’s part of a campaign by the gay and lesbian la-di-da’s to push their agenda.” The activist said she believed most people in the gay and lesbian community did not support marriage equality or the Safe Schools program. “There are radical elements within that community that always want to push that boundary,” Lorrimar said. world CALLS FOR BETTER SEX-ED IN KOREA SEOUL Gay rights groups are calling for the country to introduce a more comprehensive sex education program into the nation’s schools. In January the country’s education department announced that a curriculum review would uphold the policy of not mentioning LGBT people or sexuality. Activists have argued that the current program which promotes abstinence, argues that women can be blamed for sexual assault, and makes no mention of anything except heterosexuality, is severely outdated.
PUBLIC SERVANTS TOLD TO STOP HARASSING LGBT COLLEAGUES TOKYO Japan’s National Personnel Authority has issued a new set of regulations to the country’s public servants ordering them to stop harassing their colleagues about their sexuality. The new rules explicitly state that discriminating against LGBT people constitutes sexual harassment. Suggesting unmarried colleagues are gay, labeling someone as being gay for not being a big drinker or calling someone a “man-woman” are some of the examples listed as unacceptable.
TANZANIAN MINISTER THREATENS TO ROUND UP HOMOSEXUALS DODOMA Hamisi Kigwangalla, Tanzania’s Deputy Health Minister has threatened to publish a list of men he believes are “selling their bodies online”. Kigwangalla reportedly said the men would quietly be arrested and then help authorities find other men who are homosexual. Homosexuality is punishable by 30 years imprisonment in Tazania. The country recently shut down over 40 privately run HIV clinics arguing that they encouraged homosexuality.
TWO PEOPLE INJURED AFTER ATTACK ON LGBT PART IN CROATIA ZAGREB At least two people were injured after a tear gas canister was thrown into an LGBT nightclub in Croatia’s capital. Local news reports say people inside the club fled in panic, storming the exit and breaking windows to get out. Local gay rights group Zagreb Pride have claimed that the country’s conservative government is deliberately turning a blind eye to attacks on minority groups.
NEPAL’S CIVIL SERVICE EMBRACES TRANSGENDER INCLUSIVENESS KATHMANDU A new government report has shown that over 600 transgender people applied for jobs within Nepal’s civil service last year. Activist have hailed the statistic as practical proof that the country’s commitment to recognising a third gender is making a real change. A 2007 court ruling formally recognised a gender option other than male or female, and in 2015 the country began issuing passports with an ‘O’ for other option. There’s no news on how many people successful got jobs after applying for work in the country’s public service.
SOCIAL MEDIA MAKES TACKLING HIV IN CHINA HARDER BEIJING Health professionals tackling China’s growing level of HIV cases have highlighted the country’s growing use of social media as a barrier to success. More than 3,000 cases of HIV were reported in the capital last year, predominantly among gay men. Health workers however are struggling to get educational programs to target audiences as the country’s LGBT population begins to shun bars for online connections. Local social networking app Blued is working with health workers. Whenever someone types keywords words like “meet” and “sex” they are send a HIV awareness message.

Comedian Joel Creasey is taking on new challenges as he prepares to head off around the country touring his new standup show.
“Let’s say, it would be great, and I did work with Joan Rivers after all, I would relish the opportunity.”
The last time I interviewed Joel he strenuously denied reports that he was about to head off into the African Jungle to be part of the cast of I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here! We start our chat by acknowledging that he’s untrustworthy and a bit of a liar.
Reminded that Australian versions of reality show like Queer Eye for the Straight Guy and Amazing Race didn’t fare very well, Creasey said he felt that Fashion Police might be different.
“I had to lie through my teeth to so many people,” Joel confesses, “I’m fine with lying though, let’s be honest. I had to lie to people right up until the day it started.” Being on the reality TV show significantly boosted the comedian’s public profile. Since he came out of the jungle he’s been a regular feature in tabloid news reports. “Tabloids don’t normally go for comedians, but I’m the exception to the rule. There are some bizarre stories about me around the place.” Joel laughs. I offer the headline ‘Joel Creasey has drunken orgy with Trump supporters’ as an example. “That one is absolutely correct though,” Joel says of the headline that appeared after a recent appearance on ‘The Project’. He suggests the story that Chrissie Swan is the surrogate for his yet-to-be-born child is also pretty good. “That one wasn’t true. Neither is the one saying I had sex with Christian Wilkins - Richard Wilkins son - in the bathroom at the ARIAs. “I know how that came about through, we actually said hello for thirty seconds, but of course two men at the same party, they must have hooked up?” Joel said it’s quite easy for celebrities to become tabloid fodder. He suggests a three step approach.
“Australia does have a celebrity culture now, we have all these people coming off Survivor and The Bachelor, plus all the established celebrities who get go to all these events and are getting all this free shit, and who is holding them to account? I think a panel of people could chat and take them all down a peg.” Joel suggested, “I’m very judgemental, but I think we all are.” Joel’s stand up is often filled with stories about his celebrity encounters but recently he’s been working on a book about his exploits. Joel said the publisher’s legal team has been having a “good old time”getting approval for all the tales he wants to include. Sitting down to write a book has been a rewarding, but challenging, task for the comedian. “It’s really fiucking hard, when I do my stand up I just write dot points but now I have to write it all down, and I haven’t written in years because I’ve been out of school and in the media. Creasey lists creating the Wesley Inquirer student newspaper as one of his great high school achievements, but said he’s almost forgotten how to put pen to paper. “I used to be a great writer, but now I’m like, ‘how do you do it again?’” We agree to give this interview a tabloid style title, highlighting his lost writing skills. Joel Creasey’s new show Poser is at The Astor Theatre on 23 & 24 June, tickets available from www.astortheatreperth.com
“You need to leave the house. You need to go to parties, and you need to drink.” Joel suggests. “Chrissie is never in the tabloid because she’s a Mum with kids, but I’m always drunk at a party.”

Asked if there’s any truth to the rumours that he’s in the running to become the host of an Australian version of Fashion Police, Joel chooses his words carefully.
“It’s definitely one of Puccini’s masterpieces. It has all the typical elements of an opera and despite it mainly being a tragedy, it does have one major character that gives it a little bit of comic relief.” Asked if opera’s better when it’s filled with tragedy, Keightley said he’d felt opera was a great art form for portraying tragic events. “It does it in a respectful manner and it can really amplify the major emotions linked to something tragic.” Since graduating from the West Australian Academy of Performing (WAAPA), the smooth baritone has performed in operas both here in Australia and in America, where he continued his studies at the Manhattan School of Music. Last year he received a Westfarmer’s Bendant Scholarship and joins WA Opera this year as a Westfarmer’s Young Artist. In Tosca Keightley plays Sciarrone, one of the henchman to Baron Scarpia. International opera star Teddy Tahu-Rhodes will be performing the lead role. “I have to be a little bit mean, which is not too similar to me,” Keighley joked as he described his character.
Paull-Anthony Keightley is deep in preparations for the WA Opera’s upcoming production of Puccini’s Tosca. The singer tells OUTinPerth that Tosca is a great starting point for people who’ve never experienced opera before.

“It’s a little bit challenging. I think I have to bash a few people up which will be will be quite comical for me I think. It’s fun though to delve into someone who very far from who I am as a person.” Keightley’s journey into opera began at a young age, to combat a stutter his speech pathologist suggested taking singing classes. While singing was always part of his life, it
didn’t become a focus area for him until he was a teenager. “It wasn’t until I was in High School, and the school that I went to did lots of flashy musicals, my voice suited opera a lot more than the Broadway stuff and it lead me to WAAPA and that’s where my love for opera really grew and expanded.” While many gay students who delve into the arts experience bullying at school the singer said he had found a lot of support from friends. “Being a singing, dancing, high school student in Perth definitely had it’s challenges, but I was always singing and when I began getting into opera my friends could see it was a natural connections for me” Keightley said. While he’s looking forward to getting on stage to sing some Puccini, Keightley names Mozart as his favourite composer. “I’m definitely a Mozart fan-boy for sure, I think all his operas are just masterpieces. I’m also a sucker for Verdi’s La Traviata I think it is just the most perfect opera ever written. It’s a love story that goes tragically wrong, and I think we can all relate to that. All of us have failed relationships.” Later in the year Keightley will be appearing in the WA Opera’s La Boheme, and he’s already busy learning the work. The WA Opera’s production of Tosca is at HIs Majesty’s Theatre on 28, 30 March, 1,4,6,8 April. Book tickets at www.waopera.asn.au Graeme Watson

If you’ve been shopping of late, you may have been shocked to find your favourite stores trying harder than a Game of Thrones commercial to convince you ‘Winter is Coming’. It may be hard to believe but after what felt like the muggiest, February in existence, my body is ready for cooler nights and milder days. The old me would wait for the weather to turn and only buy jackets and coats when needed. The only slightly more organised me, knows that this is the time to start buying key pieces for your winter wardrobe before all the colour and prints disappear. Pieces purchased in these autumn months usually have greater longevity in the sense that most fabrics are still lighter in weight, so they’re still breathable. But, you can also layer them up when it actually gets cold, or squirrel them away for next summer. With this in mind, I’ve styled the above looks with pieces that are trending and you can embrace right now during this transitional season. Vintage feels, graphic prints and fonts, with bold colours are the heart of this seasons trend. As the weather does start to cool down eventually, both looks can be paired with light or darker denim jackets, as well as black nonripped jeans. Samuel England

Paul Nelson is the real deal. The owner and operator of Stronghold Functional Training might just be the friendliest bloke I’ve met, but don’t let his personable nature fool you, he has 30 years of training and experience under his belt. After 12 years of Tactical Response Policing, Paul made the decision to become a personal trainer with the aim to make a bigger impact on the community by working closely with people to improve their strength, fitness and confidence. Paul is more than equipped with the skills to help his clients get results with experience in bodybuilding, power lifting, Muay Thai, boxing and even AFL, but what sets him apart from the pack is his genuine passion for empowering his clients, both mentally and physically. Paul offers tailored one-on-one personal training sessions, small group strength and cardio (HIIT) group training class-
es and fight for fitness classes to teach his clients how to defend themselves whilst improving their fitness. He uses traditional training methods such as barbells and dumbbells, combined with more modern types of fitness methods, think kettlebells, sleds, battle ropes, as well as some creative ways to workout out with your body weight. The benefits? Well, free-weight and body weight training keeps our posture in check, and our bones and joints strong. Most importantly traditional movement strength training such as squatting and lifting will help you build a strong core more than any other fitness methods. Paul’s gym boasts a friendly environment and community type culture that has you feeling welcome from the moment you walk through the front doors. The gym is accessible to all fitness levels, and is top of my list for anyone looking for a trainer or team training gym in the northern suburbs.

The cast includes Mary-Louise Parker, Kevin McHale, Whoopi Goldberg, Rosie O’Donnell, David Hyde Pierce, Rob Reiner, Denis O’Hare and Australia’s own Guy Pearce and Rachel Griffiths.
The teens are armed with hidden cameras that capture the unrelenting abuse they face. The team lead by Thorpe then work with both the victims, the perpetrators, parents and schools to tackle the challenges. The confronting show is at times difficult to watch, seeing the cruelty teenagers can inflict on each other is heartbreaking. Bullied will screen on ABCTV from Tuesday 14 March. You can also catch the show on iView.
Dough Pizza Pizza restauraunt Dough was busy, packed with midweek revelers when we called in late one weeknight. It took forever to get any attention from the wait staff who were lost in conversation. The starters we sampled were delicious, polenta chips with a tomato sauce and crispy fried calamari. The pizzas had interesting flavour combinations but were dripping in oil. Dough Pizza is at 434A William Street, Northbridge.

film
Not everybody develops their capacity to love. Stephanie Dowrick points out that people often confuse neediness with love; trust with control and self interest with interest. First step towards loving someone else is to be true to yourself.
The French film Being 17 ( ) centres on the animosity between the two teenagers. Damien (Kacey Mottet Klein) lives with his mother, who is a doctor, while his father is away from home in the army. He has a privileged life but is bullied at school because he is gay, mainly by Thomas (Corentin Fila) who lives on an impoverished farm with his adoptive parents.
In a similar vein, Handsome Devil ( ) by Irish writer/director John Butler throws two teenagers together in a boarding school. Sixteen year-old Ned (Fionn O’Shea) is comfortable with his sexuality and even has a poster of two guys kissing in his room. In a school where rugby is a religion, Ned is the ridiculed outcast.
Damien takes self defence lessons from his ex-military neighbour but is no match for the confident Thomas. The reason for Thomas’s hostility is that he is trying to deny his sexual orientation with all the male aggression he can muster. Circumstances conspire to throw the two together when Damien’s mother Marianne (Sandrine Kiberlain) offers their spare room to Thomas so he doesn’t have the long commute to school.
When star rugby player Conor (Nicholas Galitzine) comes from another school and has to share Ned’s room, Ned builds a ‘Berlin Wall’ with furniture but the two become friends over their love of music. Like Thomas in Being 17, the muscled rugby player is struggling with his sexuality and it is the actions of an alienated student that helps him honour his true self.
Directed by André Téchiné, the film follows the seasons in the picturesque French mountains as the teenagers push each other to grow and acknowledge that they have much in common. It screens as part of the French Film Festival from 15 March to 8 April at Cinema Paradiso, Luna on SX and Windsor Cinema.

In the background, English teacher Dan Sherry (Andrew Scott) provides great opposition to the bigoted rugby coach when he yells to the boys: “If you spend your whole life being someone else, who is going to be you?” Handsome Devil screens at Somerville 27 Feb to 5 March and at Joondalup 7-12 March.
When the sequel to Fifty Shades of Grey was advertised as having “no rules, no punishments and no more secrets”, I was willing to give it a chance. Fifty Shades Darker, ( ) directed by James Foley, has Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson) reconnecting with Seattle billionaire and S&M enthusiast Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan). Alarm bells rang when Christian talks about wanting Anastasia to be his and, despite most of his life and person being “off-limits”, manages to stalk her and control every element of her life. This is not a relationship ... it is ownership ... and there is no love involved. The settings are all incredibly opulent (that’s what the star is for) that the MA rating should be for luxury porn rather that the sexual content of the film. Anastasia talks about “kinky fuckery” but it is the most vanilla, boring, male-dominated sex you’ll ever see. And punishing women who look like your crack whore mother is hardly love. Lezly Herbert
music Brian Eno Reflection Reflection is Eno’s 26th solo album. Like his 2016 offering The Ship, it’s a record well and truly in the ambient genre. It’s one 54-minute long track its, muted blurry tones that make the perfect background for meditation or concentration. More interesting is the downloadable app version which auto-generates the tones varying them slightly depending on the time of day, it’s a never ending piece of music. It also includes an ever-changing artwork that can be displayed on a screen via the Apple TV App.
Pete Tong Classic House Superstar DJ Pete Tong teams up with a symphony orchestra to record some of the biggest hits of house music, opening up with a sweeping string version of Fatboy Slim’s Right Here, Right Now. The album delivers stunning versions of many well known hits including Sabre’s of Paradise’s Smokebelch II, Insomnia from Faithless, Shapeshifter’s Lola’s Theme, Robert Miles’ Children, Moby’s Go and Porcelain. Katy B sings vocals on Inner City’s Good Life and John Newman reprises his vocal on Rudimental’s Feel the Love.
Sleaford Mods English Tapas This English duo are an acquired taste. Vocalist Jason Williamson’s thick East Midlands accent spouting punk poetry mixed with Andrew Fearn’s simple musical style give the band a distinctive sound. Just Like We Do extols the virtues of walking around like a twat, Moptop is about a naff haircut, closing track I Feel So Wrong sees Williamson almost breaking into song, it’s a cheery song about feeling disconnected. Clocking in less than 40 minutes Sleaford Mods don’t overstay their welcome.
Syd Fin Former Odd-Future member and lead singer of The Internet Syd tha Kid, drops ‘Tha Kid’ for her first solo record. Delivering a much more pop sound than previous creative endeavours, Syd shows she’s an artist with a lot to offer. Body, which is the second single from the album, is filled a sensual ode to seduction. Smile More is laid back R&B groove with Syd promising to turn down the lights and do some things to make her girlfriend smile as she ‘learns to read her mind’, while Insecurities is about a crossroads in a relationship.
Future Islands The Far Fields This synth-pop band from Baltimore sound fresh and energetic, while capturing a perfect sense of ‘80s nostalgia. Aladdin kicks things off with an intriguing mix of chilled music and intense music, Time on Her Side is pushed along by a throbbing bass, Ran glistens with uplifting chords, as each track passes they all sound quite familiar, maybe too similar. Things slow down for Candles, Day Glow Fire is sublime, Shadows is brimming with optimistic vibes. If you like A-Ha or New Order, this will be a pleasant experience.
